Midway between Edmonton and Fort McMurray, the Lac La Biche Region is easy to find and easy to explore.
DRIVING DIRECTIONS From Edmonton (approx. two hours and 30 minutes of driving time): Follow Highway 28 north for 145 kilometres, then turn left onto Highway 36. Follow Highway 36 north for 70 kilometres, through Kikino MĂŠtis Settlement and straight into the hamlet of Lac La Biche. From Fort McMurray (approx. three hours of driving time): Follow Highway 63 south for 240 kilometres, then turn left onto Highway 55. Follow Highway 55 east for 40 kilometres into Lac La Biche.
VISITOR INFORMATION CENTRE The Lac La Biche Museum & Visitor Information Centre is your local source for information about our community and the region. Stop by to ask for directions, local attractions, restaurant recommendations and more. Hours Year-round: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily from May to August (Monday-Friday only for remainder of the year) The museum is located on the corner of 99 Street and 101 Avenue (Main Street) in Lac La Biche. RV parking is available, and a public beach, playground and spray park are all just a short stroll away.

WINTER & SPRING Summer, winter, spring, fall – no matter the season, there is always fun to be had in Lac La Biche Region. For information on specific events, check out the Community Calendar online at laclabichecounty.com.
FEBRUARY Join the locals for outdoor recreation on the Family Day weekend at Fun in the Snow and the Family Day Festival, featuring music, bonfires, sleigh rides and more. This long weekend happens to be one of two free fishing weekends in the entire year. Later in the month, witness the high-octane thrills of the Winter Festival of Speed on the frozen surface of Lac La Biche Lake.

Music in the Forest
The days may be growing longer, but evening entertainment is all the rage with Music in the Forest at Sir Winston Churchill Provincial Park and Comedy Night in Plamondon. Take advantage of the warmer weather with a ride across the rolling hills of Kikino Métis Settlement at the community’s Quad Rally, beginning at the Silver Birch Resort grounds.
MARCH Celebrate la francophonie and the approaching end of winter in the month of March. Taste the rustic old-fashioned delights at Cabane à Sucre in Plamondon. Return to hockey’s roots with the Kinsmen Pond Hockey Tournament, a popular tournament for kids on the frozen lake that attracts teams from across Alberta and Saskatchewan. As the snow starts to disappear, bring your ATV to the rural community of Hylo for the annual Quad Rally. March 1-22

The Plamondon Jamboree is a down-home country music showcase, and golf season is in full swing at Hope Haven Golf Tournament, an annual fundraiser for Hope Haven Women’s Shelter at one of Alberta’s most beautiful golf courses. An immersive and eye-opening Indigenous cultural celebration and experience awaits at Beaver Lake Cree Nation Pow Wow.

HISTORY & CULTURE Let the Lac La Biche Region take you back in time. Our story began long ago – before Alberta became a province, before Canada became a country, before Europeans settled the northwest. Come and experience this land of living history that’s brought together a wealth of cultural groups from all around the world. In addition to local museums, visit our historic places of worship like Lac La Biche’s Al-Kareem Mosque, the second-oldest mosque in Canada, and Plamondon’s St. Isidore Church.
Famous explorer and mapmaker David Thompson was the first European to reach the shores of Lac La Biche Lake, back in 1798. A fort and trading post were built soon after, making the hamlet of Lac La Biche the second-oldest permanent settlement in Alberta.

In its heyday, the Mission had pride of place in a vast transportation network that stretched across the Prairies and into the Northwest Territories. Take a guided or self-guided tour of this picturesque National Historic Site, complete with heritage buildings and exhibits, to glimpse life in the olden days. BEAVER LAKE CREE NATION AND HEART LAKE FIRST NATION POW WOWS Dates TBA For generations, Pow Wows have been special occasions for Indigenous families and Nations to meet to, exchange news and goods, and celebrate their culture. Now a Pow Wow is the perfect way for you to gain a deeper appreciation and understanding of First Nations heritage. Dancers’ regalia is elaborate and unique, and every dance has a story. Beaver Lake Cree Nation and Heart Lake First Nation are both part of the Pow Wow circuit, attracting hundreds of performers from across North America.

INDIGENOUS COMMUNITIES The Lac La Biche Region has been home to Indigenous peoples for thousands of years. The reserve lands of Beaver Lake, Heart Lake and Whitefish (Goodfish) Lake are home to Cree nations, whose members practice traditional ways of life that honour both their ancestors and generations yet to come. The Métis people are descended from both French-Canadian and First Nations ancestors, and their culture reflects this blended heritage. Alberta is the only province in Canada that has lands dedicated to the Métis people, and two of these Métis Settlements – Kikino and Buffalo Lake – are found in the Lac La Biche Region. BEAVER LAKE PROVINCIAL RECREATION AREA Sand, sun and surf are all on the itinerary. The vast beach on the north shore of Beaver Lake beckons for a day of boating, fishing, sunbathing and swimming. Individual and group camping facilities are available for when the sun goes down.
SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL PROVINCIAL PARK One of the most unique parks in the province, Sir Winston Churchill sprawls across seven islands in Lac La Biche Lake. The islands protect old-growth forests, where hundreds of bird species wait in the branches for you to spot them. The main islands are accessible by a causeway, and they feature a variety of camping options, including cabins and tipis, and year-round hiking trails through a special ecosystem hundreds of years in the making.
LAKELAND PROVINCIAL PARK AND PROVINCIAL RECREATION AREA This park is all about size. A combined 590 square kilometres of protected area covers 11 major lakes, all connected by 45 kilometres’ worth of trails and portages through unspoiled wilderness. Mother Nature isn’t just your neighbour here – she’s your roommate.
LAKELAND CANOE CIRCUIT Live like a modern-day voyageur and experience the boreal forest backcountry like never before. Alberta’s only backcountry canoe circuit takes ambitious paddlers on a three-day, 40-kilometre journey through the interior of Lakeland Provincial Park, to remote sites and hidden waters that others don’t get to see. CROW LAKE PROVINCIAL PARK Campers and paddlers who appreciate seclusion will find a lot to enjoy about Crow Lake. The impressive view of the lake from Highway 63 is just the start. Campground amenities are very basic and motorized watercraft are not permitted on the lake, so it’s just you and your paddle as you head over to spot wildlife in the nearby Crow Lake Ecological Reserve.

LAKELAND PROVINCIAL PARK The Lac La Biche Region’s greatest adventure starts with a humble trail through the woods, and the promise of an unforgettable experience. Portage your canoe or kayak to Jackson Lake and embark on the Lakeland Canoe Circuit, Alberta’s only backcountry paddling route. The full circuit includes Jackson, Kinnaird, Blackett and McGuffin Lakes and takes three days to complete. You may wish to stay longer, though, as the wilderness works its magic. On the water, you have total freedom to explore and discover little pieces of paradise that landbased travellers can’t access. Your days start with beautiful sunrises over misty lakes, and end with loons calling under starry skies. Jackson Lake Staging Area is the preferred starting point for the circuit. It is located on Highway 663, east of Lac La Biche on the way to Touchwood Lake.

FAVOURITE TRAILS On foot or on wheels, the Lac La Biche Region is yours to explore.
Lakefront Walking Path: A paved path follows the south shore of Lac La Biche Lake. Park at McArthur Park and head west to see the statue of David Thompson. A few blocks away on the east side of the hamlet, another path follows Lakeland Drive, leading all the way to Sir Winston Churchill Provincial Park. Boardwalk Trail at Sir Winston Churchill Provincial Park (pictured above): Begin with a boardwalk and end with a beach, climbing and winding through a centuries-old forest. A viewing platform for observing the nearby Pelican Islands is located near the trailhead. Long Point Trail at Sir Winston Churchill Provincial Park: Hike to the western tip of the park’s main island, admiring panoramic lake views throughout the two-kilometre walk. ATV and Snowmobile Trails in Lakeland Provincial Park & Provincial Recreation Area: The protected primeval wilderness east of Lac La Biche has 140 kilometres’ worth of trails suitable for off-road vehicles. BACKCOUNTRY EXPLORATION Venture off the beaten path. Take the road less travelled. You’ve heard these sayings before. The Lac La Biche Region is where you can turn words into action. Old Conklin Road North of Lac La Biche Lake, the wilderness is open to all, but adventured by few. The Old Conklin Road winds through the sea of trees, taking you past old cutlines and trappers’ cabins, deep into Crown land where backcountry camping and exploration await. The road is not an all-weather route, and the journey to Goodwin, Steepbank and Wappau Lakes can be an adventure in itself. Go far enough north and you might even spot rare endangered woodland caribou. The backcountry in the Lac La Biche Region is open to all who respect it. Help take care of the land by practicing no-trace camping, exploring responsibly and showing respect for the natural environment.

WATCHABLE WILDLIFE Part of the Lac La Biche Region’s charm is just how close it brings you to nature. That means having plenty of wild neighbours. Remember to keep your distance and avoid disturbing any wildlife you encounter. Make noise so animals know you’re coming, and never feed wildlife. Moose are the biggest members of the deer family, typically weighing 700 pounds or more. Despite their bulk, they’re natural swimmers with a taste for aquatic plants. Black bears are forest-dwelling omnivores with a special liking for berries. Most bears are shy and would rather avoid humans, but take precautions and be “bear smart” to prevent any problems. Deer are everywhere in our region, even sometimes in our urban centres. They’re often seen in small groups. Watch for them crossing the road, especially at twilight. Beavers are the engineers of the wild, building dams that can change whole landscapes. Their dome-shaped lodges are common sights in ponds and shallow areas of lakes. Red foxes are naturally suited to the region’s mix of woods and meadows. Look closely while on a nature walk to see the burrows where they breed, and maybe a furry face or two looking back.

BIRDWATCHING Northern Alberta is where multiple bird migration paths meet, and the Lac La Biche Region is a birdwatcher’s paradise. The area was declared a Bird Sanctuary in 1920 and is also considered an Important Bird Area. Migrating water birds are the region’s greatest claim to fame, but you will see (and hear!) hundreds of others from eagles to finches to woodpeckers in the forests and meadows. Pelicans migrate to our region’s waters every summer to breed. Bring your binoculars and look for them on the aptly named Pelican Islands, visible from the main island of Sir Winston Churchill Provincial Park. Birds of prey are frequent visitors. Eagles and ospreys circle the lakes, owls swoop through the trees and hawks soar over the grasslands. Water birds like grebes, herons and terns are common sights in the warmer months. Some spend the winters on the coast, or as far away as South America, but they return to the northern lakes year after year.
The old-growth forests on the islands of Sir Winston Churchill Provincial Park provide habitat for more than 200 bird species, large and small. How many can you spot in one outing?
