INDIGENOUS COMMUNITIES The Lac La Biche Region has been home to Indigenous peoples for thousands of years. The reserve lands of Beaver Lake, Heart Lake and Whitefish (Goodfish) Lake are home to Cree nations, whose members practice traditional ways of life that honour both their ancestors and generations yet to come. The Métis people are descended from both French-Canadian and First Nations ancestors, and their culture reflects this blended heritage. Alberta is the only province in Canada that has lands dedicated to the Métis people, and two of these Métis Settlements – Kikino and Buffalo Lake – are found in the Lac La Biche Region.
