Sería bonito volver a los diecisiete después de vivir un siglo, pero sería más bonito todavía confiar siempre en el mañana, a sabiendas que uno ha hecho hoy todo lo posible para que mañana sea mejor
cantidad de energía que recibe cada segundo el soleado archipiélago. Esto, unido a una evolución sustancial de los cambios que, a finales de la segunda década del siglo XXI, ya se veían en materia de transporte (coches eléctricos, motos eléctricas), hará que el aire puro de Ibiza sea incluso más puro y, algo que quizá llamé más la atención, eliminará todo el ruido al que nos hemos acostumbrado. Un café con leche en una terraza del centro de Santa Eulària no sólo será un placer, será un placer doble sin la estridencia de los antiguos motores de combustión. No tendremos la misma suerte con nuestra manera de llegar a la isla por el aire: el avión, tal y como lo conocemos, cambiará muy poco en los siguientes treinta y cuatro años, ya que los motores alimentados por combustibles fósiles ofrecen dos grandes ventajas: mucha potencia por kilo de combustible y la aeronave va pesando cada vez menos (y por lo tanto gasta menos energía) a medida que vuela. Los aviones contaminan mucho y alguna alternativa tendrá que llegar, pero serán, sin duda, de las últimas cosas en cambiar. Eso sí, casi seguro que ya podremos hablar por teléfono y utilizar internet sin ser amonestados por el auxiliar de vuelo. La tecnología liberará mucho tiempo y eliminará la necesidad de estar físicamente en una tienda, por ejemplo, para comprar ropa. Es probable que la Ibiza de 2054 cuente con menos tiendas físicas, pero con muchas más tiendas virtuales. Dicho esto, es improbable que los mercadillos dejen de existir de manera física, aunque habrá maneras de vivir una experiencia muy parecida (¡pero nunca igual!), a pesar de encontrarnos a miles de kilómetros de distancia. Con todo, la sociedad ibicenca de 2054 no será muy distinta a la de 2022 por la sencilla razón de que los humanos somos, después de todo, criaturas que adoran sus costumbres y sus tradiciones. Las puestas de sol seguirán hipnotizando nuestras miradas, tal y como ya lo hicieron en tiempos de Odiseo, y el amor seguirá siendo el motor del mundo, un motor ecológico, aunque no siempre fiable. This, together with a substantial evolution of the changes that can already be seen in the area of transport (electric cars, electric motorbikes) at the end of the second decade of the 21st century, will make Ibiza’s clean air even cleaner, and something that might even call our attention more, it will eliminate all the noise that we have grown accustomed to. A white coffee on a terrace in the heart of Santa Eulària will not just be a pleasure; it will be a double pleasure without the harsh noise of the old combustion-engine motorbikes. We won’t be as fortunate with our means of arrival to the island by air: the airplane, as we know it today, will change very little over the next thirty-four years, as fossil-fuel-powered engines offer two major advantages: high power per kilo of fuel and the aircraft gets lighter and lighter (therefore consuming less) the further it flies. Airplanes pollute a great deal, and some day there will have to be an alternative, but planes will undoubtedly be the last things to change. That said, we can be almost certain that we’ll be able to talk on the phone and use the internet in flight, without being reprimanded by the flight attendant. Technology will free up a lot of time. For example, it will do away with the need to be physically standing in a shop to buy clothing. It is probable that the Ibiza of 2054 will have fewer physical stands, but many more virtual shops. That said, it is unlikely that flea markets will no longer exist physically, although there will be ways to live a very similar experience (but never the same!), even from thousands of kilometres away. All in all, the Ibizan society of 2054 won’t be very different from that of 2022 merely because, at the end of the day, humans are creatures that adore their customs and traditions. The sunsets will continue to hypnotise us, just as they did in the times of Odysseus, and love will continue to be the driving force of the world, an ecological motor, though not always reliable. It would be nice to go back to age seventeen after living for a century, but it would be still nicer to always trust in tomorrow, knowing that we’ve done everything possible today to make tomorrow better.
