Spray-Net. A New Way to Renovate Your Home. Discover the next generation of kitchen cabinet and exterior painting!
BEFORE
NOW
The price to Spray-Net kitchen cabinets starts as low as $3,500 and go upward depending on the size of the kitchen and number of cabinet doors. Most people dream about redoing their kitchen or exterior siding, doors and windows but don’t get past the concept as more than a daydream when they think about the high cost of replacement. The time required to plan and renovate the space is another reason why homeowners are turning towards Spray-Net as an alternative to replacement to fulfill their home renovation dreams. What makes Spray-Net unique is they have custom manufactured coatings created specifically for each surface for a finish that looks and feels brand new, not painted. With a patented process for application onsite, the transformation is achieved in as little as one day and has long-lasting results. The product won’t chip or peel and it’s made to last much like any factory painted surface such as brand new siding, doors, or windows. Spray-Net backs their product with a 15-year warranty against peeling and chipping.

The recent kitchen trend for 2021 has been white with the simple and warm white, Chantilly Lace which is a top choice by designers and customers alike. Chantilly Lace is a soft muted tone which can pair well next to marble and draw out the grey undertones. Another top pick is Hale Navy, a dark shade of grey which many homeowners have opted towards for an ultra modern yet sleek look for their kitchen cabinets.

FROM THE
WOMEN power I A D O R E T H E G R I N C H . One of the reasons I’m so fond of him is because I often feel like the Grinch as the holidays approach, staring down at my to-do list with a sour, grinchy frown. In fact, I feel a bit grinch-like right now. It’s not that my head isn’t screwed on just right (ok, maybe it isn’t, but that’s not what has me in a crabby mood), and unlike the Grinch, I don’t have a problem with the noisy festivities this time of year that seem to bother him so intensely.
DANA JORDAN
It’s the busyness of the holidays that gets to me—all the driving, shopping, decorating, wrapping, cooking, more driving, eating, drinking, unwrapping, cleaning, and undecorating that the season entails. Quite frankly, after shopping for all the jing tinglers and tar tinkers, hanging the bingle balls and the whofoo fluff, then preparing the Who-hash and the Who roast beast, I feel like packing it all up and flinging it off the top of Mt. Crumpet myself. However (and despite our shared curmudgeoness), I love the Grinch most because of his transformation. Just as he’s about to ruin everything with his terrible grinchiness, he figures it out, realizing that “Christmas … perhaps … means a little bit more.” Like the Grinch, I know I’ll shake my holiday surliness, too. Because even though the inflated prices and supply chain challenges might make it difficult for Santa to leave that Peloton on my list under the tree this year, I know Christmas has little to do with Santa and his sack of gifts (Don’t get me wrong, though—I really like Santa.) It may be cliché, but it’s spending time with my family that converts me each year. We’re quite the motley crew—not only does my ex-husband and his wife spend the holidays with me and my love, so does quite a few members of our extended clans. Sure, we have presents for one another, but it’s the love, kindness, patience, humility, laughter, and joy that we share that make this day special. It’s in the exploding macaroni and cheese incident; the unspoken rule that I can’t sit on my ex’s white couch with red wine because everyone knows how that will work out; the cut-throat, uber competitive family trivia game we play; and the giggles we get after too much of said red wine. Mostly it’s in the way we simply accept each other as we are and where we are, making it crystal clear that the real gifts are the ones that can’t be wrapped. So for me, in addition to its central Christian meaning, Christmas is all about the love in that family gathering—the sharing, the laughter, the reuniting, and even the running around that all seem so magnified this one time of the year. In fact, who could say it better than the Grinch’s former nemesis’ themselves, the Who’s: “Christmas Day will always be just as long as we have we.” w

LIVE, LEARN,
Life takes practice! And though they don’t always come wrapped in a shiny red bow, the lessons we learn along the way are invaluable gifts that are worth sharing. Here are a few noteworthy examples featured in this issue: DRIVEN TO SUCCEED LEADING AND LOVING WITH EMPATHY
Keisha Ellis, executive director at Cadence Huntersville, shows us on PAGE 42 the true meaning of courage, resilience, faith, and strength. As a teenage mother, she promised herself early on that she would not let that keep her from achieving her goals: “I always wanted to show my children that nothing that I faced would cause their needs or wants to be sacrificed … and that they can accomplish whatever they desire.”
Flip over to PAGE 49 for this month’s edition of “That’s What He Said” where Jack Salzman (coowner with wife Robin of Lake Norman Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram) talks about his innate drive to succeed in all areas, and, crediting his wife for all of it, he has achieved that … in spades! Jack relays how having a massive heart attack at 51 changed his perspective and taught him some invaluable life lessons. A WISHBONE, A BACKBONE, AND A FUNNY BONE
Meet December Cover Girl Jonina Dixon, office manager at Waterside Dental Care in Denver, on PAGE 32 where she shares how these three “life bones” contributed to her success. Undergoing major challenges in her life, including the suicide of her grandfather and a husband with a rare heart condition, Jonina gives us some insights, coping strategies, and a HUGE dose of optimism that are sure to brighten your holidays.
LASER-FOCUSED GRATITUDE
Ophthalmologist Dr. Jennifer Lira (Graystone Eye in Hickory) was so laser-focused on her career that, in many ways, she ended up neglecting her own health. Check out PAGE 24 where we see how Dr. Lira went from a sedentary life buried in work, study, and textbooks to one of health, energy, and immense gratitude. w

why
pets
don’t make good gifts … but adoption does! and after all, ‘Tis the Season … and oh the delight on their faces when they see that adorable puppy or kitten pop out of a box donning a red ribbon! But, reality check: Our shelters are overcrowded and too many pets are euthanized, about 3 million animals each year, according to The Humane Society of the United States, and much of this can be mitigated. Pets are a long-term commitment – dogs can live for 12-15 years on average, while cats can easily live more than 15 years, so it’s not a decision to be made lightly.
I T S E E M S C O M P L E T E LY H A R M L E S S
While adoption is encouraged, a rescue isn’t a rescue if the pet is not a good match for the family or you simply aren’t ready for the responsibility. While many fantasize about a cute puppy or a cuddly kitten, the reality is that shelters are swamped with “returns.” Many people underestimate the time and effort involved in taking care of a pet or perhaps the pet did not fit into the family dynamics as they had hoped.

The Humane Society of Iredell County advises the following: Discuss the adoption with all household members. Discuss what type of dog/cat/pet suits your lifestyle and household. Research the breed extensively and educate yourself on all aspects of pet ownership. Meet several dogs/cats before making your decision.
If you are set on a pet for a gift, here are some points to consider:
Area Shelters and Rescue Organizations:
Always ask first. Even if you know they are on the lookout for a pet and ready for the gift, be sure you talk to them beforehand.
Piedmont Animal Rescue 228 East Waterlynn Rd., Mooresville, NC 28117 704.663.3513 www.piedmontanimalrescue.com
Gift only to your family. You have to know someone’s lifestyle and preferences very well to gift a pet, so immediate family only.
Cornelius Animal Shelter 19110 Meridian St., Cornelius, NC 28031 704.237.3602 www.cornelius.org/animalshelter
Matchmaking. You don’t want to get your elderly dad an energetic dog he can’t keep up with nor a pup your little one is just not ready for yet. Do your research on breeds and their specific personalities.
Charlotte Cocker Rescue P. O. Box 1050, Kannapolis, NC 28081 www.charlottecockerrescue.com
Don’t be impulsive. Getting a pet is a huge responsibility and commitment and should involve the entire family—discuss extensively and do your homework.
Charlotte Mecklenburg Animal Care and Control 600 East 4th Street, Charlotte, NC 28202 704.336.7600 www.charmeck.org
Post-holidays are a better time. Wait until after the first of the year after the hectic holidays have passed…you don’t need to add chaos to an already busy season. And inevitably, there will be more rescues up for adoption after the holidays. w
We wish you a safe and healthy holiday season! Since 1952, our goal has been improving the lives of our patients. Our team has the training and experience to determine whether your symptoms are related to allergies or asthma, or something else entirely. In turn, we can offer more comprehensive and effective solutions that will get you feeling healthy faster. We want you to enjoy all your winter holiday activities, so please reach out to us at Carolina Asthma & Allergy Center if you have concerns about asthma or allergies. a Silent Night family christmas
F E W C H R I S T M A S C A R O L S evoke this season of peace and goodwill as readily as Silent Night. Did you know that this carol of tranquility and hope played a central role in one of the most unique war truces in recorded history?
On Christmas Eve, 1914, thousands of British, Belgian, and French soldiers put down their rifles, stepped out of their trenches, and joined in a spontaneous moment of peace while singing Christmas carols with the Germans troops. Stanley Weintraub wrote about this event in his book, Silent Night: “Signboards arose up and down the trenches in a variety of shapes. They were usually in English or – from Germans – in fractured English. The signs read “YOU NO FIGHT, WE NO FIGHT” or “ YOU NO SHOOT, WE NO SHOOT.” In the middle of the two-day truce, soldiers left their muddy trenches to shake hands, exchange tobacco, kick soccer balls, and bury the dead. The soldiers were ordered to return to their trenches, but before the shooting resumed, in the darkness of the night a voice started singing the familiar carol, Silent Night, and a legendary chorale moment was experienced by all. DECEMBER 2021
We dream of crafting the perfect family gathering during the holidays. We shop, decorate, wrap, plan and cook all in the hope of experiencing the perfect day. Regretfully, sometimes what we imagine actually turns into a war zone.
In lieu of posting “YOU NO FIGHT, WE NO FIGHT” signs in everyone’s bedroom, here’s some tips on how to enjoy your own Silent Night: Give Up On Perfection – The perfect day only exists in the movies and in heaven. The unexpected is going to happen, so prepare yourself to consider it a memory in the making. Accept Your Family For Who They Are – Your relatives are going to be arriving (with their annoying habits and all!) so remember to pause and remind yourself of what you love about them. Treasure who is with you and be grateful for family and friends. Step Outside – We don’t have to win everyone over to our way of thinking. When the conversation starts to escalate (or deteriorate), excuse yourself, step outside, count to 10, and remember why you are with everyone. This will help you avoid adding fuel to the fire. Issue a Pardon - The holidays are a great time to forgive. You have fought with your brother for 10 years and nothing has been resolved. Be the bigger person. Forgiveness can be the best gift you give this holiday! Begin a new and positive chapter in your family relationships.
As Christmas day 1914 drew to a close, these fighting men had ceased being enemies for two whole days. There was peace on Earth and goodwill toward man because their focus was on the spirit of the season … not winning. Let’s place the meaning of this holiday season at the center of our family gatherings, and remember, if family members start to pick up their arms, it might be a good time for someone to start singing Silent Night. w

dolls and balls AND games and gifts IT’S NATIONAL SAFE TOYS & GIFTS MONTH! Age-Appropriateness You should not only keep the child’s age in mind, but their developmental level as well. If shopping for infants and children with special needs, look for things that appeal to the senses (light, soothing sounds, soft textures, etc.) And a handy rule of thumb: If the piece can fit in a toilet paper roll, it is not meant for children under the age of 3.
and that means gifts and toys are abounding and bouncing around. Since December is National Safe Toys and Gifts Month, we decided to compile a few reminders, suggestions, and other info to help keep your family and friends safe (visit www.safekids.org for more information):

Check for sharp points, edges, or pieces that could easily loosen and fall off. Test the durability of the item and avoid toys with ropes, cords, or heating elements. Also, make sure crayons and markers are labeled “nontoxic” and be cautious of small toys with removable magnets as these can cause serious injury or even death if ingested.
There’s lots to criticize about social media but it serves an imperative role in sharing your experiences and knowledge about unsafe toys with fellow parents, grandparents, babysitters, etc. You can review products on websites or do your own posts on social media platforms using the hashtag #safetoy.

When did you know this was your career path? Eyes and vision captivated me long before I knew very much about them. I spent my early childhood in Nicaragua and my grandfather was the only person his age who had really good vision in our community. It set him apart and all the kids knew him to have “bionic eyes.” Unknown to me at the time, he had been able to have cataract surgery while living and working in the United States. As an elective surgery not readily available to others in that community, I saw firsthand how much of a difference it made in his life – thus began my fascination with cataract surgery. Now, not only do I have the privilege of being the instrument by which vision can be improved/restored through cataract surgery, I also have the joy of being a primary eye care doctor – which means I often get to see entire families and take care of my patients over many years. I am so blessed to be an ophthalmologist… it is the perfect fit for me. How do you carve out “Me Time”? During my last year of medical school, for the first time in my life, I took a breath and committed to taking care of myself. It sounds so ordinary, but up until then, my needs (sleep for example) had never taken precedence. Having been so laser-focused on my career meant that, in many ways, I had neglected my own health. I was living a sedentary life and eating what felt convenient or comforting while spending long days and nights in front of textbooks and in hospitals; but I realized that I had to change course. I started exercising regularly and eating better. This was transformative – not just for my physical health, but for my mental health and my ability to manage the inevitable difficulties that come with a career in medicine. I am not only healthier and happier, but I am better equipped to handle life.

What is your secret to a balanced life? One strategy that I employ is to complete ALL of my work for the day before leaving the clinic or hospital, even if I have to come in early or stay late. I have also found it hugely beneficial to plan my exercise routine between my time at work and time at home. This allows me to reset and destress before rejoining my family. Another avenue is music – both singing and dancing. I have no singing talent whatsoever, but I love singing at the top of my lungs and my husband and I love spinning to salsa music until we fall over. You said you are inspired by gratitude, could you expand on that? A while back, I started a daily ritual of gratitude and I have been amazed by the magical changes. It has been so life-changing for me that I am absolutely determined to practice gratitude each day. I say practice because it truly is an exercise, and just like with physical exercise, after doing it for a while you start to notice changes. This has been an avenue through which I have found resilience and joy. In Glennon Doyle’s words, “When I feel lacking – I don’t need new things, I need new eyes with which to see the things I already have.” w

Phase 1: Testing for safety, this is the first in human trials.
Phase 2: This phase moves forward with safety and first-time use for a specific medical diagnosis.
Phase 3: Moving forward with safety and efficacy, Phase 3 continues to test the treatment— from here the pharmaceutical company will make the decision to file with the FDA as a new drug.
Phase 4: This phase is concerned with safety monitoring for long-term effects. Most of these trials are post-market and observational.

HERE AT RESEARCH CAROLINA ELITE, WE ARE INVOLVED IN MANY DIFFERENT THERAPEUTIC AREAS, INCLUDING: WHY SHOULD YOU VOLUNTEER? Volunteering for a clinical trial could help you, your family, and others as the data collected will help to bring a new medication or therapy to the market. While on study, you are monitored closely by medical professionals not just for the indication under study, but for any problems that may occur while on study, so your entire health and wellness is assessed. Volunteering in a clinical trial is absolutely at no cost to the participate, and in many trials the participate will receive compensation for their time and travel.

sometimes struggle to create new and unique traditions together while trying to meet the expectations of extended family. Coordinating schedules and planning with others in mind can add unnecessary friction and strain within the relationship. Therefore, it is crucial to create an emotionally safe space to express needs and desires. Unaddressed or invalidated desires can sometimes turn into gridlock and contempt for your partner. Failing to honor and respect your partner's needs can lead to constant conversations without progress, and that leads to hurt, frustration, and feelings of rejection. As a result, humor and affection may decrease, partners may disengage emotionally, or they may start to vilify each other.
The happiest marriages are those who willingly accept influence from the other. Accepting influence is uncovering and understanding the meaning of your partner's position in the conflict, yielding rather than demanding your way … hearing and accommodating each other with love and respect and valuing the other more than the thing you want. This principle demonstrates that you are important, and your opinions matter to me even if I disagree with you. Listening to your partner's feelings and opinions as you make decisions will contribute to successful holiday planning. Before making decisions, listen to each other's thoughts and feelings to convey, "we are a team, we're in this together, and we need each other." To begin, pray and invite God into the conversation. Pray for the wisdom of what to say, the knowledge of what not to say, and a "heart to hear" one another. Schedule time together where you can each share your "dream" within the conflict. Usually, the "dream" is a deeply rooted desire for your life and your family hidden within the heart. Therefore, you have to become a "dream detective" for your partner. Approach these conversations with an open spirit and willingness to be flexible. Consider the reasonable part of your partner's requests and figure out a way to accommodate the dream. Listen and validate your partner's desires and find ways to compromise.

THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF
coffee
ACCO R D I N G TO H I STO R Y B O O K S , Arabs were the first to cultivate and trade coffee. The drink became known as the “Wine of Araby” and was eventually introduced to Europe in the 17th century. It did not take long for coffee to gain its immense popularity, and coffeehouses also made an early debut in history. Much like the coffeehouses of today, people gathered in what they dubbed “Schools of the Wise” to listen to music, watch performers, play chess, and discuss current events. From the beginning, coffee was studied for its medicinal value, and that research continues today. Here are some facts to consider over your next cup of Joe!
New research suggests that drinking coffee reduces overall breast cancer risk by about 20 percent when age is factored in. For women, coffee may lower the risk of stroke. All the studies have shown that high coffee consumption is associated with decreased risk of cirrhosis and liver cancer.

wishBONE, a backBONE, and a funny BONE a
C
ITED AS THE THREE THINGS N E C E S S A RY F O R S U C C E S S, these “life
bones” –as they’ve been dubbed and frequently attributed to Reba McEntire—became a strategy and motto that Jonina Dixon, office manager at Waterside Dental Care in Denver (and HUGE Reba fan!), took to heart. A wishbone emphasizes the importance of having a goal, a focus, and a passion that guides you. A backbone is all about mental toughness, courage, and resiliency; and, perhaps most important, your funny bone reminds you to keep your sense of humor intact … it helps to keep us optimistic and hopeful—it is vital in learning to appreciate the Now and live in the moment … to be truly present.

Jonina grew up in Concord and graduated from Western Carolina University (WCU). She earned her bachelor’s degree in emergency medicine and worked for EMS as an emergency medical technician during college, receiving her paramedic certification in the process. After graduation, she returned to Concord and attended Rowan-Cabarrus Community College (RCCC) to get her dental assistant certificate, and she is currently in the process of getting her master’s degree in health care management from WCU.

“I had plans of going to dental school, but things change,” Jonina says, “and I’m grateful they did! While attending RCCC, I completed my last two weeks of clinical rotation at Branchview Dental Care in Concord. Dr. Bryan Persinger is the owner/dentist and has been serving the community for 20 years now. After my two weeks of clinical, he hired me to work as a dental assistant. I worked my way up from an assistant to the assistant coordinator and then to clinical manager. Three years ago, he decided to open a new office, Waterside Dental Care, and I helped him and our other managers open the office from the ground up. This included everything ranging from finding the staff to ordering ink for the printers. Seeing this office grow and thrive has been the most rewarding feeling. I love my job and my team so much … I am truly blessed.” Ever since she was a young girl, Jonina wanted to be a pediatric dentist and help children in underserved areas receive dental care. Enter Jonina’s W I S H B O N E : “It started when I was unable to get braces as a child because it just wasn’t affordable for my mom, who was raising four kids by herself ! I know my mom would have found a way to make it happen, but when I was older and on my own, I got braces. I was 19 and in college, so of course it wasn’t the cool thing, but I didn’t care because I was so happy that I was able to do it … and all on my own! Mom was there to support and advise but I felt very accomplished and mature to have financially made this happen for myself.” Demonstrating such determination, resiliency, and courage at such a young age would bode well for Jonina as she would need to draw upon those strengths later in life; not only did she lose her grandfather to suicide in 2014, but her husband went into severe congestive heart failure in 2018 at only 29 years of age due to a rare virus that attacked

his heart. Both these things shook Jonina to her core, buuut … enter Jonina’s B A C K B O N E : “My grandfather who died in 2014 was a great man with a heart of gold … the same is true of my other grandfather who continues to inspire me daily. My grandpa who passed had suffered from a stroke that resulted in a loss of peripheral vision, and he couldn’t get out and do all that he was used to doing … subsequently he became clinically depressed and took his own life. I discovered the power of prayer that day and learned not to take anything for granted, for tomorrow is not promised. I try hard not to stress over things out of my control. It does nothing good for you! I think that has helped me more than I realize in my work life, too. I have become less stressed about situations that aren’t ideal because stressing over the unchangeable only hurts you more, physically and mentally.” Both sets of grandparents have been instrumental in Jonina’s life. Jo and Dale Wiser were married for over 57 years before her grandfather’s passing in 2014. Joe and Joyce Greathouse have been married for over 61 years now: “All my grandparents represent the true meaning of love,” Jonina smiles. “I can only hope and pray that when I am married for all those years, I am just as happy
”
I have become less stressed about situations that aren’t ideal because stressing over the unchangeable only hurts you more, physically and mentally.” and in love as they are. They taught our family a lot about love, optimism, hope, and happiness.” Enter Jonina’s F U N N Y B O N E : “My older brother, Dustin, is the jokester of the family,” she grins. “He is always making us laugh. He serves in the Navy and just returned from deployment but every time we talk or get to visit in person, we are laughing! My grandpa Joe is the exact same way. We always said my brother gets his sense of humor from my grandpa. The best part of it is that I am seeing those same traits in my son, Kolby James, who is 4. Our other child, Reagan, is 12 and we try to pass on these same family values to them. You must have courage, optimism, faith, and a good sense of humor … don’t take life too seriously. keisha ellis LKNW RECOGNIZES A WOMAN DOING EXCEPTIONAL
WORK IN THE LAKE NORMAN COMMUNITY, A LEADER WHO IS PAVING THE WAY TO CHANGING OUR ATTITUDES AND INSPIRING CONFIDENCE IN THE FUTURE.
on LESSONS RECEIVED: When my grandmother died, it felt like I lost both my mother and grandmother at the same time … she inspired me and truly taught me how to navigate life. She only had an 8th grade education and had to make the decision to help support her family financially. Despite that, she still managed to teach me things that an education doesn’t always impart—such as to carry myself with respect and dignity … and to strive each day to be better than the day before. She showed tough love and taught me that life will throw some curve balls that sometimes hit you and cause you to fall, but the key is to get back up and keep striving no matter what. on FAMILY GRATITUDE: Thankfully I have a very supportive family and they understand the industry. I make sure that I never miss activities that involve my kids because you can never get that time back … and being a mother is my #1 job! I am also married to a very amazing man named Mike. If you try to come up with a list that demonstrates the most perfect life partner, he will exceed it. He knows what I need before I do, and he pushes me to be a better version of myself. on ANSWERING THE CALL: I truly believe my career chose me and I followed. A friend introduced me to assisted living, and after being in sales for a year, I was promoted to operations and became an Assisted Living Administrator. With a master’s in psychology, I never thought about being a part of assisted living but after I got a glimpse into the industry, I was open to the idea. My willingness to try something different led me to a career that I absolutely love. I want to change how families feel about choosing assisted living. It’s so difficult to make the decision to put complete faith and trust into someone else’s hands, and I want them to see that our team takes great pride in caring for their family … like they are our own! on FAITH, STRENGTH, AND HOPE: I was a teenage mother, and I promised myself early on that I would not let that hinder me from achieving my goals. I always wanted to show my children that nothing that I faced would cause their needs or wants to be sacrificed. I want to be a constant example to them that they can accomplish whatever they desire. When I was pursuing my master’s degree, I was working a full-time job, coaching high school cheerleading, directing my church youth choir, and my son was playing AAU basketball. I was so determined to obtain that degree that I literally would sleep two hours, take online courses, and complete assignments while the kids were asleep. My husband was on the road a lot at the time, so it was just me and the kids, but we made it happen and everyone cheered me on as I crossed that finish line and got my degree. w

anti-aging and cognitive decline HYPERBARIC OXYGEN THERAPY (HBOT) THE BEST KEPT SECRET IN MEDICINE
the age of 30…from there it is a subtle decline. More than half of those 60 and older express concern about the decline in their cognitive abilities that includes overall slowness in thinking, difficulties sustaining attention, problem solving and short-term memory issues. That decline may unfortunately culminate in dementia or Alzheimer’s which occurs when the pathological processes end with significant brain cell death and tissue loss.
C O G N I T I V E F U N C T I O N U S U A L LY P E A K S A R O U N D
HBOT
COGNITIVE DECLINE
is a medical treatment administered in a chamber in which the patient breathes 100% oxygen under pressure. This treatment produces up to a 15-fold increase in blood oxygen concentration causing oxygen to diffuse into every cell in the body. This stimulates healing in all tissue, including the brain. It is an extremely safe, noninvasive, painless therapy.
Dr. Efrati and his team are the leading researchers in hyperbaric medicine for the past 15 years with particular focus on the brain. They completed a July 2020 peer-reviewed randomized controlled study that demonstrated for the first time that HBOT can significantly enhance the cognitive performance of healthy older adults. The main areas of improvement were attention, information processing speed, and executive function, in addition to the global cognitive function, all of which typically decline with age.1 “In the past, we have demonstrated HBOT’s potential to improve/treat brain injuries such as stroke, traumatic brain injury and anoxic brain injury by increasing brain blood flow and metabolism,” per Dr. Hadanny.
LKN EXPERT
“The occlusion of small blood vessels, similar to the occlusions which may develop in the pipes of an ‘aging’ home, is a dominant element in the human aging process. We found that HBOT induced a significant increase in brain blood flow, which correlated with cognitive improvement. We can conjecture that similar beneficial effect of HBOT can be induced in other organs of the aging body,” per Dr. Efrati.
Dr. Roger Hunter is the owner of Nirvana Hyperbaric Institute located at 146 Medical Park Road, Suite 110, in Mooresville. Roger and his team bring more than 30 years of experience in hyperbaric medicine to Nirvana Lake Norman. ANTI-AGING
Another study released by Dr. Efrati’s group was released in November 2020 entitled “Hyperbaric oxygen therapy increases telomere length and decreases immunosenescence in isolated blood cells: a prospective trial.”2 The study showed an increase of telomere length by over 20% and a reduction of senescent cells of up to 37%. The accumulation of senescent cells (from either an increase in the generation of these cells and/or a decrease in their removal), aggravates the damage and contributes to aging. Quoting Dr. Efrati: “Telomere shortening is considered the ‘Holy Grail’ of the biology of aging…the significant improvement of telomere length shown during and after these unique HBOT protocols provides the scientific community with a new foundation of understanding that aging can indeed be targeted and reversed at the basic cellularbiological level.” w

SURRENDER AND HAVE FAITH
The challenge is how you handle things when issues arise. This is when a person’s character can shine. You just must be willing to take the time and make the necessary changes to turn things around. I had a massive heart attack when I was 51 and stopped breathing for three minutes. Initially there was a big mental hurdle that I had to overcome—the fear that it would happen again. Robin and my doctors were clear and told me to get up and start living life again. I have learned not to spend time looking back. Do whatever it is you are doing right now with purpose and intent … cultivate your faith and count your blessings daily. FROM BUSINESS SUIT TO BATHING SUIT
I swam competitively growing up and still enjoy swimming a few miles per week. We have been fortunate to travel all over the world. We have been to Italy, France, Sweden, Denmark, Russia, South Africa, England, and several other countries. I would say Italy is our favorite country, and Tuscany would be our favorite region of Italy. MY PASSIONS, MY LOVES

A WINNING WAY
Whether it is in business or in my personal life I enjoy putting in whatever effort is required to win and be successful. The great recession of 2008 was our biggest professional obstacle and overcoming everything that came our way from that was certainly an enormous challenge; but failing was not an option, so we worked harder and made it through without laying off one employee. Little did we know how it would prepare us for surviving Covid.
I grew up in Sarasota, Florida, and graduated from Auburn University and Nova Southeastern Law School. I met Robin—my wife, better half, and love of my life—when she was working in radio and called on my business to advertise with her radio station. She was a vice president and market manager for CBS Radio and was recognized as Market Manager of the Year by her company. After we were married, she was gracious enough to retire and help me pursue my dream of owning a car dealership. We have worked side-by-side since 2003 and have three grown children and eight grandchildren! LEADERSHIP AT THE DEALERSHIP
My wife Robin inspires me. She is the most giving person I have ever met. We laugh that she pushes me to sell more cars so she can give more money away to all the nonprofits we work with. There’s no doubt we wouldn’t have achieved the success we have without her leadership at work, at home, and within the community as the kind-hearted philanthropist that she is. w

'Twas the n ight befor e deadlin e, Not a photo in sight, Steph asked for an extension, But the schedule’s too tight. The stories are written, The sources are checked, The photos are beautiful, The proof, ready to inspect. So Chelsea clicked, And Leslie read, Then Dana exclaimed, "Let's put ‘er to bed!” We’ve done it, Ladies, We’re good to go, Now Santa is ready, And it’s starting to snow. We all say a prayer, As the order is tall, May the season be bright, Happy Holidays to all!

“My son was rushed to the ER with a brain injury. Ruth translated all the medical terms & situations in a way we could understand. I can’t explain what it meant to have her in my corner. She was truly an angel in one of the worst situations of my life.”

“Please put a penny in the old man's hat. Christmas is coming, the goose is getting fat. Please put a penny in the old man's hat. If you haven't got a penny, a ha' penny will do. If you haven't got a ha' penny, then God Bless you.”

Aunt Freddie was a social worker with my momma, Bennie Mae Collins, at the Lake County Department of Social Services. Our holidays were always filled with lots of traditions.
We used to sing this as a three-part round in Girl Scouts at St. Augustine Episcopal Church in Gary, Indiana, and it got me thinking about holiday memories … .
Christmas is my favorite holiday. We usually start decorating the inside of the house after Thanksgiving … sometimes we start decorating after Halloween. Our house is a Christmas Wonderland. All of this is part of the celebration, but the true reason for the season is the birth of Jesus Christ. He is ALWAYS remembered and celebrated. We gather, we feast, we give, we sing, we praise, we love … after all, ‘Tis the Season!
Growing up, our holiday season included Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Hanukkah for our Jewish extended family. Burton D. Weschler (“Uncle Burt”) and his wife Fredrica Winters Weschler (“Aunt Freddie”) would often take me along to services at Temple Israel during Hanukkah. Uncle Burt was an estate planner, a civil rights attorney, and advisor to Richard Hatcher, the first Black Mayor of Gary.
While we are blessed to gather this holiday season, there are so many of us who have lost family, friends, and loved ones. The cumulative effect of people not being able to visit in hospitals or nursing homes, or not being able to participate in celebration of life/ funeral services for extended periods of time, continues to have long-term consequences—radically changing the holiday season for many.

Coping with loss in “normal” situations is challenging enough but dealing with loss during a time that is supposed to be full of happiness and joy can be devastating unless individuals make a concerted effort to acknowledge and accept the loss … then move on to make this season a time for reflection, hope, and gratitude. With that said, my thoughts and prayers are with all who may be struggling this holiday season. w The 5-Step Recipe For Coping With Holiday G.R.I.E.F.
Give yourself permission to grieve. Remember to honor the life and legacy of your loved one.
Incorporate new traditions into old traditions. Embrace meaning and gratitude in your new life going forward.
Forge forgiveness and faith. (by Dora Carpenter)
