ads@lakenormanwoman.com PO Box 1000, Cornelius, NC 28031 I AGREE WITH DOROTHY: “There’s no place like
home.” As someone lucky enough to have grown up in a loving and nurturing one, home has always been a place of shelter and sanctuary for me. After all, it was a place where I could go unshowered, wear sweats that should have been thrown away three years ago, and not a smidgen of makeup, and was loved just the same. So it was not only a place where I felt completely comfortable and at ease, home was a sacred space that provided protection and peace. Home remained that safe harbor after I left, when I returned to spend time there, sure, but in my mind’s eye, too. It’s something of an enchanted place for me even now. When I feel at home, I don’t have to second guess every little faulty detail about myself… like why I know some things would be better left unsaid, but I constantly blurt them out anyway. Feeling at home means I don’t have to worry about embarrassing myself, because home has seen both the best and the worst of me and takes me as I am at any given time. When I feel at home, I know there’s nothing I need to hide, no feelings I need to censor, no truths I need to deny—it’s when I can simply be me. Kind of makes me wonder why, as a young adult, I was so eager to move away from my childhood home and be on my own, right? The funny thing is, though, every move I’ve made since that first
WOMEN power
one has brought me a little closer back to where I started. With every new house and every new town, though, I seemed to be looking for answers to questions I wasn’t even sure how to ask, trying to get back to a place I didn’t even realize I wanted to be. But then I met him, and it occurred to me that it wasn’t a place I longed for so desperately, but a feeling. The feeling that whatever it is I am going through or will go through, I won’t be going through it alone. The feeling that if I need it, I know I’ll have a soft place to land. The feeling that I’m always welcomed and always wanted, whether I’m at my best or at my worst. The feeling that beside him is the place in my heart where everything begins and ends, regardless of where we are on a map. I had to do it without the benefit of a pair of ruby slippers, and it took me a lot longer than a trip over the rainbow. There were a lot of wrong turns and roadblocks—and a few wicked witches and really mean monkeys—along the road. But thanks to a man who continually gives me something I want to come back to…who makes me feel more me when I’m with him than without him…who loves and accepts me even when I’m wearing sweats that should have been thrown out three years ago and not a smidgen of makeup, I’ve found my way back home, at last. w

Here are some other benefits to becoming a more compassionate human being:
HEALTH
A Compassionate Heart is a Healthy Heart! that a compassionate heart is a healthy heart! In the book, Lasting Happiness in a Changing World: The Book of Joy (by His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu), they speak of compassion often. RESEARCH HAS SHOWN AGAIN AND AGAIN
“Compassion,” they agree, “is so fundamental to our survival that children as young as six months have been shown to have a clear preference for toys that reflect helping rather than hindering. When we help others, we often experience what has been called the ‘helper’s high,’ as endorphins are released in our brain, leading to a euphoric state. The same reward centers of the brain seem to light up when we are doing something compassionate as when we think of chocolate. The warm feeling we get from helping others comes from the release of oxytocin, the same hormone that is released by lactating mothers. This hormone seems to have health benefits, including the reduction of inflammation in the cardiovascular system. So compassion literally makes our heart healthy and happy.”
• Cellular inflammation in the body is at the root of cancer and other diseases, and a life of meaning and purpose, rich in compassion and altruism, says one study, leads to lower inflammation and longer lifespans. • Compassion is a buffer against stress. A study at the University of Michigan discovered that “people who engaged in volunteerism lived longer than their non-volunteering peers, but only if their reasons for volunteering were altruistic rather than self-serving.” • Compassion also boosts our health and well-being because it helps broaden our perspective beyond ourselves. Research shows that depression and anxiety are linked to a state of self-focus—when all we think about is “what’s good for me?” • Another way in which compassion may boost our health is by increasing a sense of connection to others. One study found that lack of social connection is worse for your health than obesity, smoking, or high blood pressure. w

Heart Attack, Cardiac Arrest, and HandsOnly CPR – WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ACCORDING TO THE AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION
(AHA), approximately 610,000 people die of heart disease in the United States every year—that's one in every four deaths. Furthermore, cardiac arrest is often confused with heart attack, though they are very different, and distinguishing between the two is vital when it comes to saving lives. The AHA reports that every minute CPR is delayed, a victim’s chance of survival decreases by 10 percent. Therefore, immediately performing CPR can truly mean the difference between life and death. Below are some matters of the heart that we hope you use as an impetus to learn more.
What is the difference between heart attack and cardiac arrest? You can think of a heart attack like you would a plumbing problem. Heart attack occurs when coronary heart disease clogs the blood vessels to the heart, restricting blood supply. As a result, heart tissues die. In contrast, think of cardiac arrest as an electrical problem. When the electrical system that keeps the heart rate and rhythm under control malfunctions, heartbeats become irregular. The heartbeats may be too fast or too slow and stop, both of which are deadly. Sometimes, cardiac arrest may occur after a heart attack.

How do you know if someone is experiencing sudden cardiac arrest? • Someone suddenly collapses and loses consciousness. • The person does not respond when tapped on the shoulder and asked if he or she is OK. • The person is not breathing or is only gasping. If you see someone experiencing these red flags of cardiac arrest, follow the steps in the graphic to perform hands-only CPR — you just may save a life.
WRITER SYDNEY TREXLER, MARKETING & OUTREACH COORDINATOR
What is hands-only CPR? Hands-only CPR is a type of resuscitation that the general public can perform with no medical training or background. It is simple, straightforward, and effective and consists of only chest compressions … no mouth-to-mouth. According to the AHA, hands-only CPR has been shown to be as effective as traditional CPR with mouth-to-mouth breaths in the first few minutes of a cardiac arrest. Any CPR is better than no CPR and gives the victim a much higher rate of survival versus no resuscitation at all. How do I know if I should perform hands-only CPR? You should perform hands-only CPR if you see someone having sudden cardiac arrest. w
HANDS-ONLY CPR
Take a few seconds to learn how to save a life. If you see someone collapse or lying on the ground, unconscious or unresponsive:

THE PERFECT FOR YOUR PERFECT DAY! SO MANY THINGS TO THINK ABOUT! From the moment the
ring goes on the finger, plans (that we’ve had since we were 5!) come to fruition; dreams swirl in colors, cakes, and confetti. Who to invite, where to invite, and how-in-theheck do we avoid a fight! As you will need to do often, take a deep breath, count your blessings, and move on.
With schedules packed and stress levels likely elevated, your appearance doesn’t need to take a backseat … and a great smile only gets better with a bright white smile. However, over time we may lose that pearly whiteness from gradual staining. Stained teeth can be caused by many things including: • Tobacco • Red Wine • Sodas/Cola • Coffee • Tea
|
FEBRUARY '22
There is now a dentist-invented, at-home alternative that offers an efficient, safe, and effective choice for brightening your smile: the
GLO Brilliant Teeth Whitening Device. By combining light and heat to activate specially formulated hydrogen peroxide gel, GLO has been clinically proven to get your smile five shades whiter in just five days. Plus, it’s super easy to use: a built-in timer and pre-measured whitening vials ensure a perfect application every time. The main benefit of GLO, however, is that patients experience NO SENSITIVITY during or after the treatment. Also, with GLO you’ll have stains removed the correct way—which helps your teeth to strengthen and become healthier. The result will be not only a brilliant smile on your wedding day, but one that is healthy and strong, too! w LKN EXPERT
It’s something of a no-brainer that we all want to look our very best on our wedding day, and there’s nothing that brightens up your appearance like a brilliant smile. In fact, it has been scientifically proven that a smile is the first thing people notice. Whitening your teeth prior to your big day is a sure way to get that beautiful smile.
18
Unfortunately, though, brushing your teeth harder does not cure the problem – in fact, it can even worsen it by removing your enamel and causing gum recession. This can also lead to further discoloration and even more dental problems. Overthe-counter treatments should also be used with caution. Though they are marketed as an economic way to get those pearly whites, many of those methods have been known to cause damage to your gums and enamel.

TIPS FOR RADIANT ON YOUR WEDDING DAY H2Ohhhh! Drink plenty of water to keep impurities away and keep the area around your eyes from becoming too puffy. As a bonus, it will make your skin glow and speed up your metabolism! It’s the easiest way to get ready for any big event.
Sweat It Out When you sweat, your body flushes out all the impurities that are embedded in the dermal layer—from makeup remnants to chemical residues and dirt. By sweating you can improve the tone, clarity, and texture of your skin.
You Are What You Eat The no-brainer side effect of not eating healthily in the weeks before the wedding is the chance that you may not fit into your dress. But that’s only one of the negative consequences. Fried foods, junk food, and sweets will leave you with clogged pores and lessthan-glowing skin.
Professional Facials You’ll want your face to be a perfect canvas for flawless makeup application and picture-perfect smiles. Microdermabrasion, glycolic acid, and other chemical peels exfoliate layers of bad skin and minimize pore surface.
Other Ways to Hydrate Whether your skin type is oily, dry, normal, or some combination, it craves water; so (in addition to drinking enough water) you can snack on naturally hydrating foods such as watermelon, grapefruit, cucumbers, and tomatoes. Also, use cool or lukewarm water to wash your face as hot water can dry your skin. A humidifier and quality skin products are also beneficial. Au Naturel to Detox Your Skin One week (two if you can) before your wedding, don’t wear any makeup (you can use a little blush and eye makeup but keep it minimal) … it may feel uncomfortable but 1) YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL THE WAY YOU ARE! And 2) It is highly beneficial for your skin. Cleanse and moisturize your face nightly. w

ARE YOU A TEAM AND DO YOU ALWAYS HAVE EACH OTHER’S BACK? DO YOU HAVE MUTUAL RESPECT? Successful couples do not speak disparagingly about one another; instead, they brag about their spouse/partner. DO YOU ENCOURAGE YOUR PARTNER TO GROW AND CHANGE? Do you inspire each other to be better and support one another fully in that endeavor? DO YOU KEEP SECRETS FROM ONE ANOTHER? There is a thin line between secrecy and privacy, and transparency is key in a successful marriage.
DO YOU HAVE FUN TOGETHER AND IS THE UNION BUILT ON A SOLID FRIENDSHIP? You should have enough in common that trips and date nights are still valued and enjoyed.

Venues that accommodate lots of destination events are happy to help simplify things; and by “all-inclusive” they mean everything will be included: an on-site wedding coordinator will handle all of the details—think flowers, cake, officiant, marriage license … even everyone’s accommodations. This means lower stress and potentially lower costs. |

Instead of a one-day event, a destination wedding typically spans 3–5 days. This gives you ample time to really visit with family and friends AND sneak away as a couple to enjoy the honeymoon part of the trip. Plus, you can have other pre- or post-wedding events like brunch on the beach, swimming with dolphins, spa days, meet-andgreet pool party, sunset cruises, or other sightseeing excursions. CA P T U R I N G T H E M O M E N T
One of the main reasons for hosting a destination wedding is to end up in a gorgeous location, so whether you choose a tropical island, an Italian villa, or a mountain resort in the fall, you’re pretty much guaranteed a stunning backdrop for your wedding photos.
V I R T UA L P L A N N I N G
cons
It’s hard to be as in-the-know as you would be if your venue was nearby. It can be stressful to make major wedding decisions sight unseen, so it is imperative to communicate virtually with your wedding planner. Schedule regular zoom meetings so you can be as hands-on as possible.
A F F O R DA B I L I T Y / A CC E S S I B I L I T Y
Typically the wedding couple pays for food and activities related to the celebration (including events such as a welcome party or a rehearsal dinner), while guests are expected to cover their own airfare, accommodations, and other travel expenses. Things like affordability, distance of locale, and (in today’s world) covid numbers, may keep many family and friends from being able to attend; certainly it makes it more difficult on the elderly and those with small children. FA M I LY A N D F I S H
They say family and fish smell after three days so you might not want a week of Uncle Joe and Aunt Jane. If you’re also honeymooning at your wedding destination, do you really want to share the hot tub with your dad or hug Aunt Martha at breakfast every morning? w
PRO TIPS: Using credit card points or miles can help to save money on destination weddings. Use a travel agency that specializes in destination weddings. They are paid a commission from the airlines and hotels you end up booking so there’s no additional expense for you to use them. Hire a local wedding planner—this is when you really need an expert!
Send out “save-thedate” notices 9–12 months in advance to give guests plenty of time to plan and save. It is worth noting that many US-based vendors are eager to service destination weddings, but you may need to pay for additional travel fees. Make all your plans (especially honeymoon plans) clear to your guests in advance.

LKNW RECOGNIZES A WOMAN DOING EXCEPTIONAL
WORK IN THE LAKE NORMAN COMMUNITY, A LEADER
WHO IS PAVING THE WAY TO CHANGING OUR ATTITUDES AND INSPIRING CONFIDENCE IN THE FUTURE.
guide on GETTING HERE: I was born and raised in Virginia Beach where I attended the Virginia Beach Technical and Career Education Center as a junior and senior in high school. This is where I got to experience the food industry on a more professional level for the first time and began to really explore baking as my career path. I moved to Charlotte in 2014 and earned my associate’s degree in Baking and Pastry Arts and my bachelor’s degree in Food and Beverage Entrepreneurship at Johnson and Wales University. on BEING UNDETERRED: I am extremely proud of being a 25-year-old who was able to turn her hobby into a business. While it took a lot of sacrifice and perseverance, it’s amazing to be able to say I genuinely love what I do. I used to bake and decorate cakes from home, and many people doubted me when I said I was going to have my own bakery one day; but I can confidently say I have repeatedly put myself outside of my comfort zone to achieve my goals. on THOSE WHO MADE A DIFFERENCE: I am inspired tremendously by my mother, who is the strongest woman I know, and by my grandmother who lived into her nineties. Particularly during my college years, we three became extremely close. They were my best friends, my role models, and my biggest supporters. My world shifted when my grandmother died, but it taught me how important it is to be here for each other until the very end, no matter how difficult that may be. on
LEXIE GREER SWEET CAKES BAKERY
SURROUNDING YOURSELF WITH THE BEST:
My incredible staff also inspires me daily … they have shown me what it means to give your all to your work. There’s nothing better than to have a staff of workers who are sincerely happy to be there creating delicious desserts for our customers—having a passion for not only baking and the food industry, but for customer service and putting a smile on our patrons’ faces … THAT’S what makes us a cohesive team. And I am not only inspired by their dedication, but I am infinitely grateful for it every single day.
on LOVING THE NOW: I make a point to take a pause several times a day, look around, breathe it all in, and remind myself of how fortunate I am. It’s easy to get distracted by the busyness of life and then you’re not truly living in the moment. If we only focus on our goals, our future, and what we want in life, we’ll never be happy with where we are RIGHT NOW. And I think it’s important to be happy with where you are now! w Lexie Greer is the owner (and Chief Cake Designer) of Sweet Cakes Bakery located at 20601 Torrence Chapel Road, Suite 106, in Cornelius. Clinical psychology taught me about the individual psyche, while my doctorate taught me about the family system and the complexities of relationships.” Psychology and relationships, however, were not her only passions. Not one to shy away from hard work or a busy schedule, Dr. Stuchell also received her degree in professional fashion design while completing her master’s: “It was the perfect blend of fulfilling my intellectual and creative needs,” she explains. “The heart has so many passions and interests, why settle for only one.” Dr. Stuchell’s professional achievements entail running a successful private practice in Malibu and Newport Beach, California, and most currently, Cornelius. She has authored numerous publications, taught graduate courses, and trained and supervised therapist interns. Having been a presenter several times at national conferences to educate other professionals, Dr. Stuchell worked as a consulting therapist developing programs and treating patients at exclusive drug and alcohol treatment centers in California; and she started

one of the most successful women’s residential psychiatric centers in Malibu. “Being well-accomplished requires that your heart is 100 percent into it,” she says. “If your heart is not into it then it’s not worth doing. When you follow your heart, there is always more to explore and achieve.” Dr. Stuchell says letting her heart guide her and being organized have been the keys to her success. “In terms of tools, I’m always paying attention to how my heart is guiding me. Living from your heart’s center is what brings meaning and purpose to life. Practically speaking, I’m organized, scheduled, and not afraid to delegate what I can,” she offers. “Living a passionate and engaged life is really what matters, and I am passionate about the emotional and psychological health of humanity.” With that sentiment firmly in her heart, Dr. Stuchell founded a non-profit organization that provides free or low-cost counseling services in several states. One area her non-profit targets is family court services, including supervised visitation when the court orders it. Dr. Stuchell has been an advocate for children throughout her career, including running a grief camp for kids at Loma Linda’s Children’s Hospital, and placing mental health counselors in the Beaufort County, South Carolina, public schools. “Psychological and emotional health is just as
important as physical health,” she advises, “and I am always advocating for the needs of children … and happy to do so. Afterall, healing the heart is my forte.” As a single mom to 8-yearold son Bentley, parenting has certainly shaped Dr. Stuchell's approach to self-care and work-life balance. With her love of sports, innate athleticism, and a tomboy nature, you are likely to find the pair off skiing, playing soccer, tennis, or basketball. “I grew up ski racing, so I taught Bentley to downhill ski, and we had fun skiing black diamonds together at Jackson Hole this Christmas,” she smiles. “I also introduced him to hockey, and he has turned into quite the little hockey player. We recently met Jack Eichel, one of the NHL’s greatest players, and Bentley was able to have him sign his travel jersey. That was a very special mother-son moment.” Dr. Stuchell manages to prioritize health and nutrition as well. Her secret lying in that organized schedule she seems to have mastered. Some tips? Make your meal-plans for the upcoming week—it not only saves time, but it allows you to include all the proper nutrients and portions in advance so you’re not searching for “something healthy” come

mealtime. An athlete at heart, Dr. Stuchell also reiterates the importance of daily exercise and recognizes the importance of self-care—enjoying regular acupuncture, chiropractic treatments, massage, and facial/ spa appointments as well. Dr. Stuchell's enthusiasm for life is inspiring but it is her clients, she says, who inspire her. Without hesitation and with obvious heartfelt compassion, she humbly acknowledges: “Seeing them have the courage to face some of life’s biggest challenges and to open up and be vulnerable and trust me in the process is beyond inspiring. I am so grateful and honored to have been able to touch so many lives. And clients leave their mark on me as well. I am forever changed, in some way, when we collaborate together and engage in a therapeutic relationship.” w

what i know now
Toby Keith may lament he’s not “as good as I once was,”and John Cougar Mellencamp may want to “hold on to 16,” or at least that’s what they say in their songs, but the women of Lake Norman are proof that life just keeps getting better and better. With life experience comes wisdom, and we’re asking area women to share what
they’ve learned on the topics of lifestyle, attitude, beauty, self-confidence, relationships, and, yes, getting older. WHAT’S THE ONE SKILL EVERY WOMAN SHOULD HAVE?
Challenge yourself to speak up. Women have too much knowledge, insight, and experience not to share it with others. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE THE YOUNGER YOU?
Pause, ponder, and pump your brakes! Recognize that leadership is an action, not a role. Use your experience to empower others and create a positive environment. WHAT DID YOU LEARN FROM YOUR MOM?
It’s okay to be uncomfortable. The more uncomfortable you are, the more prepared you tend to be. She also taught me to always treat others with respect because your respect should never be taken for granted. WHAT IS THE ONE THING YOU HOPE YOUR CHILDREN LEARN FROM YOU?
Be a mentor. It’s our responsibility to keep the door open so that our future generation of leaders can open it. I also hope that they will learn to make small talk with anyone, no matter what age they are. WHAT ADVENTURE CHANGED YOUR LIFE?

that's what he said LIFE-LONG LEARNING
I realized early in engineering school that if I was going to be any good, I would have to spend whatever time it took me to become proficient. Good grades are one thing but knowing something well enough to become an expert in your field is a different level. Once I set my mind to becoming that proficient expert, learning became fun and filled with purpose. In business, as the saying goes, “If you’re not growing, you’re dying” and it’s much better to keep learning, growing, and expanding your skills and business than trying to just maintain a certain status quo.

SPOILER ALERT:
Men and women are different. Ok, so maybe that fact didn’t really surprise you. After all, it’s been 28 years since John Gray popularized the idea that men are from Mars and women are from Venus. And as much as we love sharing women’s stories, we decided it was time to lend the Martians of LKN our ear, too. This month we share the perspectives of Dr. Bryan Persinger of Waterside Dental Care.

DR. BRYAN PERSINGER OF WATERSIDE DENTAL CARE
THE PERFECT FIT
I grew up in Hartville, Ohio, and met my wife Tracie in high school. We have two kids: Madeline, 16, and Justin, 14. Although I went to college for mechanical engineering, two years into school I started to look at medicine and dentistry. I was already well-aware of various dental procedures, having experienced many of them myself as the patient—I had a pretty severe accident as a teen that broke a lot of my teeth. My father-in-law is a dentist and urged me to consider it as well … AND I enjoy people and completing projects, so dentistry has been the perfect fit.

Success is defined differently for everyone. Years ago, I was shown a graphic that had a wheel with five spokes labeled: Faith, Family, Finances, Fitness, and Friends. Many people are successful at some of the spokes, but I think of success as keeping all five spokes in sync. TIME AND PEOPLE … CHOOSE WISELY
One of my favorite song lyrics, “I don’t want to gain the whole world and lose my soul,” is a great reminder to me to live with a purpose other than personal material gain. Time is fleeting, and it never slows down or stops so use it wisely. Create a plan for your life and spend time with others that do the same. As Jim Rohn said, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with” … choose wisely.
CRUISIN’ THE LAKE AND BEYOND
Mountain biking and motocross are two of my favorite pastimes, but I like anything you can ride or drive. We do a lot on the lake during the summer, and I recently got my pilot’s license. I like to stay busy and have fun! My personal favorite place to visit the past few years has been Whistler, BC. They have one of the best downhill mountain bike parks in the world. Like heaven on earth!

Again, while there is still debate about just how much effect masks are having on developing youth (and others), here are a few issues to consider:
SELF
Facemasks
in a Pandemic …
WHAT ELSE DO THEY MASK?
yes, but what else are they doing? There is controversy surrounding the topic when it comes to the impact on young children learning to talk. Speech-language pathologists and audiologists are well positioned to extend their reach in the face of communication struggles and questions posed by facial masks. The potential for harm does not always translate into actual harm but I think most would agree that blocking half of the human face dehumanizes us to some degree and hides some vital facial expressions. M A S K S A R E H E L P I N G P R E V E N T T H E S P R E A D O F C O V I D,
There are sensitive periods in which speech and language development and social-emotional development occur in young children. At birth, babies learn how to communicate by staring at faces of their parents’, watching their mouths, listening to their voices, and trying to respond. This is how they learn to talk. Babies watch and listen before they begin to truly babble and then imitate and use words. These milestones are building blocks and lay the foundation for evolving speech and language and effective communication. The loving adults smile and coo back to the baby as the reciprocity of human communication continues.
Tips to Better Communication While Wearing a Facemask:

Do masks interfere with speech and language development?
Yes, if a young child is not exposed to a full human face smiling, talking, cooing, and interacting with them most of the time, development can be affected. Is mandatory masking of school children a bad idea?
Obviously there is much controversy over this, but I have seen it negatively impact some children; especially those with speech and language impairment, hearing impairment, learning disabilities, and/or ADHD. Are sounds muffled and occluded behind a mask? Yes,
consonants cannot be heard as clearly and the decibel reduction from masks ranges from 3-12 depending on the type of mask worn. The lips and 50 percent of the facial expression are hidden so it impacts what is seen and what is heard.
• At home, spend quality time talking and playing with your young child in normal everyday routines without a mask allowing them to fully see all your face and expressions.
• Wear a clear mask or shield as often as you can so that children and adults can read your lips and read your facial expressions.
• When wearing a mask, face the person directly and make sure they are looking at you. • When wearing a mask, speak slowly and slightly louder, but do not shout. • Use your hands, body language, and changes in the tone of your voice to add more information to speech that is masked. • Reduce the background noise and distractions. w WRITER MARIANNE UMPHLETT

And as a loan officer with Movement Mortgage, she has access to experts and resources that allow her clients to find the loan that best fits their needs, but without the stress typically involved when shopping for mortgages. CHILD’S PLAY For small children in your wedding party, tie a decorative helium balloon on a string around their wrist; it will help guide them as they “follow it” down the aisle. Also, provide goody bags for the kids in attendance (crayons and coloring book/puzzle books, games, etc.).
FABRIC & FLOWERS Use parts of your mother’s or grandmother’s weddings: See if you can obtain a piece of lace or fabric from their dress to incorporate into your veil, garter, or bouquet. For flowers, give your florist a photo of the bouquets they carried to replicate, and you’ve got something old AND something new … priceless!

BETTER ME … BETTER YOU … BETTER WORLD
MIND body spirit By mixing the ingredients of attitude and action, we can change the flavor of our own lives. Learn to nurture your body and soul to lead a more balanced life.
A S I L E N T R E T R E AT F O R T H E T H I S PA S T FA L L , I SIGNED UP FOR A TWOD AY A D V E N T U R E that
would push me well out of my comfort zone, as I entered 43 hours of silence— easy for some—difficult for this curious extrovert. The purpose of a silent retreat is to be receptive to the signals that life, God, the universe, or your deep self will give you. There was apprehension as I live in a world with constant chatter and noise everywhere. I realized that rarely am I in silence, mostly because I like loads of sound. I had to ask myself, “Why do I run from silence?” I arrived early to take advantage of a one-on-one session called Spiritual Direction. This was the first step in focusing my intention for the retreat. I was encouraged not to force the outcome and to relax into whatever would be revealed to me.
Before meeting my retreat mates, I decided to take a hike alone through the woods. I had a mental dialogue going on in my head that was spinning out of control and included:
.
I shouldn’t take time off work in November.
. .
This is selfish.
There are bears in the woods and they need to eat A LOT before hibernation.
.
What if I talk and get sent home early for disruptive behavior.
.
I think I am hearing dueling banjos in the distance (if you are young that is a reference from the movie Deliverance).

heart
…
That neurotic voice in my head went to war with me and I shut it down by addressing each thought: 1 I have approved vacation time.
Who determines selfish? I call this self-care, selfimprovement, or a healthy challenge that pushes me out of my comfort zone. 2
Bears have slowed down and if indeed I look like the Last Super then they better be ready for a fight. 3
4 Really? I am pretty much a rule follower, the student who arrives 15 minutes early with homework in hand. I doubt this would be my moment for detention or suspension—no matter how tough. 5 Deliver me from Deliverance Dueling Deliverance! banjos are surely played in a different part of the North Carolina mountains and not on this sacred ground.
So, I battled the brain, enjoyed my hike, and set out to meet my eleven silent friends (only seven made it to the finale and walked the ceremonial labyrinth). I was surprised at how easy it was to go into silence. I spent the time reading, writing, thinking, remembering strange things like the names of boyfriends from elementary school. Here are a few of my takeaways:
. .
Nature and life are everchanging. Autumn brings dying of leaves and weakening of the trees but there is still an abundance of beauty.
. . .
Everything has a time and a season. Silence really is golden.
There is never total silence if you listen for a beautiful symphony of sound that surrounds us including: wind blowing, leaves rustling, deer scampering, an occasional fly, and maybe a babbling brook.
.
A deeper practice of gratitude will always lead to JOY.
After my retreat, I was pondering my time in silence and a song from my days attending church played in my head: “It Is Well In My Soul Soul.” That was my big takeaway—I felt calm in my soul. I was rested and renewed. w WRITER NANCY BEARD
