The children named above should be at summer camp or on a beach or playing a video game. But they’re not, of course, and my heart is broken. I know yours is too. Heck, my heart breaks for every person in this country— on this planet even—for it seems to me that humankind has reached a new low. Is this really what we’re capable of ? I suppose the answer lies in the 19 tiny coffins buried in Uvalde last month. But the answers are much less clear when it comes to how to stop this incomprehensible violence against those who have no way to defend themselves. And unfortunately, it’s yet another topic that divides us. The left turn to gun control, the right turn to hardening targets, and as we turn on each other, the deeply disturbed continue to turn to mass murder. I’ve got my opinions, though I admittedly don’t know the “right” answer. So I pray our leaders will work together to develop a solution so that no parent ever again has to endure an agonizing wait outside their child’s school to find out whether their baby still lives. This is the greatest, freest country on earth after all, and as such, shouldn’t we at least be free from that?

WOMEN power

But then again, maybe the answer isn’t in policy. Perhaps it’s in something far simpler. Maybe it’s in the directive left in the misspelled words scribbled on a kitchen chalkboard just days before his death in 2012 by Jesse Lewis, a six-year-old victim of the Sandy Hook massacre: “Norurting Helinn Love (Nurturing, Healing Love).” What if, as Jesse suggested, we decided to take a stand against these senseless acts of bloodshed by offering each other signs that there are big-hearted souls in this world who do generous, compassionate, and selfless things? What if, instead of looking to politicians, we commit to engaging in small acts each and every day that show that there is hope for humanity’s future—easy-tooffer but oh-so-impactful acts such as caring words, a reassuring hug, a helping hand in times of trouble, or giving a random stranger a gi-normous smile? I realize this solution may seem naïve. But if each of us focused on this one thing we all have in common—the want and need to love and be loved—I have absolutely no doubt we could change the world. We all hold a magnificent gift, after all…a gift that starts very small right within our own heart. We, of course, have the freedom to decide what to do with it. Evil swept across Uvalde, Texas on May 24th. But we can push back against that evil with how we choose to respond. Let’s make certain Jesse didn’t lose his life in vain. Let’s choose nurturing, healing love. w

Reena Bhardwaj, CEO of MFLEURS USA in Concord, was on her way into work in NYC on 9/11 when she saw the first twin tower on fire. Unable to communicate with the school and daycare where her kids were was beyond terrifying. “This day showed me that we cannot give up our freedoms to live in fear,” Reena says on PAGE 14.

Helping Your

Body in

THIS TIME OF YEAR, there is a beautiful opportunity to support and

recharge our bodies amidst the schedule of fun. The warmer weather creates moments for us to be out in nature which many studies over the years have shown have a positive impact on our health—mentally and physically. There are some simple things that we can do to make our bodies thrive while we are enjoying this time of year.

Our bodies are made up of quite a bit of water so staying hydrated is key.

Being in the heat, eating sugars or carbs, and drinking alcohol can deplete our bodies of fluids and electrolytes (salt and potassium). Some simple things you can do to replenish them is putting a sprinkle of sea salt into your water or sprinkling it on food. Sliced cucumbers or tomatoes with sea salt is a great snack to help rehydrate you. Eating foods high in potassium daily such as bananas and avocados is a great summer trick to keep electrolytes in check. There are also a few companies that make “cell salt tablets” or electrolyte replacement powders that work well. Coconut water is a great natural rehydration drink to choose. Also having plenty of filtered or spring water when you are out in the heat is a must. If you are feeling tired, foggy headed, headachy, or weak after being in the heat these could all be signs that your hydration level or electrolytes are off.

lakenormanw oman.com

When your body is moving or warm it is naturally trying to move toxins out via sweat.

It is also a reality when we are out in nature that we will encounter some toxins in the environment. Whenever gas and exhaust are involved, toxins get into our bodies … it is unavoidable. It can cause a whole slew of symptoms depending on how well your body detoxifies. When working with a holistic practitioner you can find out where you fall in terms of good, fair, or poor as a detoxifier. Staying hydrated helps to move toxins through your body and out. Another thing you can do is eat cruciferous vegetables or take an organic powdered greens supplement to help your body move these toxins through the liver. There are lots of great liver support products on the market that can also be used. It is best to ask your holistic practitioner which would work for your body. One simple trick A fun electrolyte is to drink and detox drink! fresh-squeezed Use the juice of one lemon squeezed, a teaspoon to organic lemon tablespoon (to your taste) water daily of maple syrup, and a to show your sprinkle of sea salt with liver some love. 16 to 24 ounces of water (you can even add a dash Make sure of cayenne if you want a to use room metabolism kick). Shake it temperature up and pour over ice. Enjoy! water as heat will destroy some of the benefits of the lemon. w

Who is your inspiration and support? Both my parents have inspired me the most in life and my husband Ricky is my greatest cheerleader. My parents had a strong entrepreneurial spirit, as they had started their successful business from scratch. I was motivated to start my own business by watching, learning, and developing my drive from them.

Let Freedom Ring! On 9/11 I was on my way into work in NYC when I saw the first twin tower on fire. Unable to communicate with the school and daycare where my kids were was beyond terrifying. Seeing people covered in ash running dazed and confused is something that can never be erased from your mind. This event made me a stronger and a more resilient person. This day showed me that we cannot give up our freedoms to live in fear. Finding space to bloom. During my corporate career, there were so many people going through the motions of coming to work because they were making good money, but they were not happy. I found myself in this situation in corporate America and discovered that I needed to leave in order to find my happiness … and ultimately it led me to my dream job in entrepreneurship with MFLEURS. I am determined to be happy and enjoy what I do daily. It is only when we enjoy what we do that we can focus on the customer and provide them with 100 percent satisfaction. Where do you find meaning and purpose? You have to know when to unplug and step away from work to devote to family life. In the financial world, this was extremely difficult, which is why I made the decision to step away and focus on MFLEURS. It allows me to spend quality time with my family and to be truly present. My family and I love traveling and have been fortunate enough to visit many countries. Our trips are always family-centric and involve input from everyone, though typically I am the planner. My most memorable trip was to London when my son’s high school band was invited by the Queen of England to march in their New Year’s Day parade. w

Seeking Freedom from Student Debt JUST AS YOU’RE PREPARING TO SET OUT YOUR FLAG,

write the list for the backyard barbecue, and check your list of invitees to ensure you didn’t leave off a neighbor or relative, I want you to reconsider what liberty means for your family and if you’re truly prepared to walk in it. As of May 30, 2022, 43.4 million Americans have student loan debt. That means 1 in 8 of your barbecue guests are in that number! Shocking? Well here’s another shocker to add to the list: a 2022 high school graduate can expect to borrow $39,500 for their bachelor’s degree. Student loan debt can be crippling and it’s the elephant in the room that no one discusses but many people are impacted by it.

True liberty is creating and implementing a plan where your child doesn’t have to be in this great number of borrowers. And if you’re thinking they can work their way through college like many of you did, just stop because those days are long gone. The plan and path to debt-free college lies in their high school course schedule. Make sure you as the parent are taking advantage of the dual enrollment opportunities students can participate in. I know you love the “prestige” of your kid taking Advanced Placement (AP) courses however they aren’t guaranteed to get the college credit for the course the way you are with dual enrollment classes. Even if your child is at a private school that doesn’t offer dual enrollment, they can still enroll for them at a community college. These courses save you money since the state foots the bill for them. If you plan and

implement appropriately, your child can rack up as many as 30-36 college credits and transfer them all! I know summer is a time to relax and spend time with family and friends and you should. It’s also the time to execute your plan for liberty from student debt because graduation from high school is around the corner and you want to be prepared. Just as much as you planned your family excursion to Jamaica is how much you should be planning for junior’s 4-year getaway to college! If you’re unsure how to get started with creating a plan and a path to financial freedom, reach out to a college admissions and scholarship professional for a consultation. Having a blueprint is the best way to let freedom ring in your bank account and for years to come for your child(ren)! w WRITER

Pets SUMMER

SAFETY

for the entire family, and that includes our furry four-legged family members too. Dogs can overheat easily due to the fur coats they don year-round—not to mention their boundless energy that contributes to high body temperatures. So don’t forget to keep an eye on Fido and keep these safety tips in mind: IT’S FUN-IN-THE-SUN TIME

Don’t send me to the doghouse. It is best to have a tarp or something that provides shade but doesn’t restrict airflow. Dog houses do not provide appropriate shelter on hot days because they trap heat.

Keep it cold and fresh! Hydration is crucial; keep your dog’s water bowl full of fresh, cold water. There is a lot on the Internet about ice water causing bloat and stomach problems in dogs; however, the Humane Society says it is ok, and even recommended, to put a few cubes of ice in your pooch’s water on hot summer days. Signs of heatstroke. Dogs show signs of overheating that are similar to humans—difficulty breathing, excessive thirst, lethargy, etc. If you suspect heatstroke, get to a vet; however, overheated dogs should be cooled immediately by putting ice packs or cold towels on their head, neck, and chest.

Use your doggone sense. Don’t expose your dog to the heat of the day. Practice basic summer safety such as walking them early in the morning when it’s cool; letting them play in the sprinkler; and NEVER, EVER leave your dog in the car, not even for a minute with the car running and the air conditioner on! w

INSIDE DESIGN WITH STARR MILLER

Seat

TAKE A

WE USUALLY TALK ABOUT SUSPENSION as it relates to

system of shock absorbers for your car. In interiors we use the same word to describe the spring networking for a chair or sofa to suspend your underside. As it relates to furnishings, the number one request we hear from new clients is that they do not want a saggy sofa. Let me explain how the main suspension systems work and why you want to invest in the higher quality suspension.

BE ST -

B E T T E R , B U T CO U LD S Q U E AK -

Long considered the gold standard of sofa suspension, eight-way hand tied is the most labor-intensive option. It’s the mark of a highquality piece of furniture. The springs are supported by webbing on the bottom of the sofa (steel webbing is best) and the top of the springs are secured by twine. The twine is tied by hand at eight different spots for each spring and then attached to the frame. This web of twine keeps the springs from shifting, providing years of unwavering support. The soft twine also ensures that the suspension won’t start to squeak with use.

A less labor-intensive version that consists of coils mounted on a metal frame, which is then added to the furniture as a single piece. It comes with some sacrifices. The drop-in coil system isn’t supported on the bottom by anything (it is screwed into the sides of the frame) so it will start to sag before a true eight-way hand tied unit will. Secondly, there is a lot of metalto-metal contact with this option, which can lead to squeaking.

EIGHT-WAY HAND TIED

the

SINUOUS SPRINGS

A common type of sofa suspension in low- to mid-range priced sofas. Imagine many large zig-zagging pieces of metal set in rows several inches apart and running perpendicular to the front of the sofa. These springs are an example of planned obsolescence found in fast furniture and car seats. The manufacturers of this suspension type want these chairs and sofas to have a shorter life span and get replaced more often.

The old adage is, “You get what you pay for.” In this case it is true. If you invest in seating customized with a designer fabric, you want a piece that will hold up to the wear and tear of years of use. The manufacturers who build a true 8-way, hand-tied system also use other resilient methods and materials that will allow reupholstering, leveling, lumbar support, shape retention to name a few attributes. My take, fast furniture is not economically or environmentally sound. w |

COFFEE TALK

A sit-down chat with DR. CLAIRE PAPP, of White and Haines Advanced & General Dentistry

Our First Cup

I was born in London, England, and grew up in a Navy family … we moved every two years all over the U.S. My educational pursuits allowed me to experience other locations as well— Virginia for my undergraduate degree, majoring in business management, and for dental school I attended Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Sarasota, Florida. My last clinical year was done in Erie, Pennsylvania, so I have definitely lived in a variety of places. While I do not have children yet, my hound mix fur-baby Watson has my heart and keeps me entertained … he certainly lives up to the lazy hound dog stereotype.

A Latte to Learn

In school I attended many American Student Dental Association dental conferences and that helped establish my foundation as a dentist. They were extremely informative, motivating, and a great way to network with dentists from all over. I feel that it is my obligation to stay informed and educated for the best outcome of my patients. Now that I have started my career, I have continued to stay involved in dentistry outside of the office. I attend ADA meetings, continuing education courses, and was elected the Secretary of the Charlotte Dental Society Board in 2021.

A Mug Half Full

I believe in looking at the glass half full and not half empty. In a world full of uncertainty, if you can try to find the positives, things are more likely to turn out that way. When I started looking at life with a more positive outlook, I became happier with myself and life in general. I truly believe that when you give off a positive energy, it attracts it right back to you.

America—A Beautiful Blend

Besides moving around as a kid and eventually for education, I have also lived in San Diego, Pensacola, Florida, Washington DC, and Virginia Beach. In fact, I have lived in a total of 11 cities throughout the U.S. As expected, growing up moving every two years was very challenging for me but now looking back, it has really shaped who I am as a person … extroverted, social, and able to make those around me feel welcome.

A Cozy Cup of Family Cheer

I truly enjoy coming to work every day and seeing my patients and my work family. And I am especially grateful that I get three-day weekends … it gives me time to travel to my family who is spread out: my mom lives in Virginia Beach; my dad lives outside of DC; one of my older brothers lives in LA with his wife and my beautiful niece, and my other older brother lives in Phoenix. The miles may separate but I cherish the time I get to spend with them. w

Summer

with kids out of school can put a dent in your wallet. Day trips, weekend jaunts, and just eating out are more frequent during the summer months, and as we’re all aware EVERYTHING is more expensive these days. Here are some Summer-Saving Tips to help you beat the heat and save some bucks:

• With everyone spending time outdoors, gym attendance tends to wane in the summer. Look for gyms to discount memberships and even offer special perks.

THE LONG, HOT DAYS

• Check out KidsBowlFree.com where you can get vouchers for free games of bowling.

• Home goods such as

appliances, furniture, and décor are also on sale much of the summer—most folks are spending money on outdoor fun.

• Check out the local thrift stores. In the wake of spring cleaning, stores often have more selection during summer months.

• Download the free Coupon Sherpa app for savings on kid-friendly stores as well as restaurants and other retailers.

• Don’t buy tickets to busy amusement parks or waterslides at the entrance. Local grocery stores or discount bulk stores will have better deals.

• For back-to-school savings check out The Coupons App at www.thecouponsapp.com. Search for deals, coupons, and online promo codes from over 100,000 retailers, both local and chain.

watermelons, picnics, and firefly lights; a tipsy red canoe finds shade in the trees; sailboats go searching for sunsets and a breeze … ahhh, the sweet sights and sounds of summer. Growing up in Springdale, Arkansas, located deep in the Ozarks, Dr. Sarah Carlock’s childhood summers didn’t stray much from those descriptors … today, however, it may include walks on the beach and trips to the farmers’ market.

DR. SARAH CARLOCK & DR. NAOMI SIMON

And while the summer of 2022 holds many of the same memories and activities of years past, one thing is new— this summer, after years of hard work, Dr. Carlock embarks on her new medical career as a dermatologist at Piedmont HealthCare’s Mooresville Dermatology Center/Eterna Aesthetics.

“I have been in Charleston for the past three years,” she explains, “for my dermatology residency at the Medical University of South Carolina. It takes 12 years after high school to become a dermatologist and I am excited to close that chapter and step into this new career in a community I love! I moved to Charlotte for a year to complete my internship in internal medicine at Carolinas Medical Center and that is when I fell in love with this entire area.” Although she wasn’t exactly sure how, Dr. Carlock always knew she wanted to work in healthcare. When she was in high school, her mom was diagnosed with melanoma, and this served as a realization for young Sarah: “I think that was when I first understood that dermatologists treat more than teenage acne.” Thankfully, her mom’s melanoma was successfully treated with surgery, but the experience opened Dr. Carlock’s eyes to the powerful effects of ultraviolet radiation and was the beginning of a lifestyle change for her.

“Gone were the days of tanning beds and sunbathing,” she relays. “Now we are the family sitting under the canopy tent at the beach and helping each other reapply sunscreen. I almost always have at least one bottle of sunscreen in my bag.” “The 1929 girl must be tanned.” When asked about words that matter, Dr. Carlock took a moment before referencing this impactful Coco Chanel quote … and rightly so. There are elements of it that make the good doctor cringe. Tanned skin was and still is considered by many to be beautiful and healthy, but we’ve also learned more about the detrimental effects. “If only people fully understood just how damaging sun exposure is,” she says. “It is my job to educate about sun protection and skin cancer prevention, to encourage folks to embrace their own natural complexion, and to help treat the damage that has already been done.”

Dr. Carlock may not have known how it would all turn out when she donned her cap and gown at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, but as a gifted dermatologist with Dr. Naomi Simon and her team at MDC/Eterna, things look sunny and bright. “I love that the skin is very visible,” she shares. “Even as I am introducing myself to a new patient, I can start to visually process their concerns. There are truly thousands of skin diseases, and I enjoy searching for subtle clues and nuances to help find the correct diagnosis. I also love the variety in my work. There is definitely no such thing as a boring day. In just a few hours, I can biopsy concerning lesions, manage autoimmune conditions, identify triggers of an allergic rash, outline an acne treatment regimen, and excise skin cancers … just to name a few.”

Each day, Dr. Carlock is determined to smile and laugh. Outside of work, she enjoys trying new restaurants, cooking, going on walks, group fitness classes, exploring local shops, catching up with friends, and visiting her family in Arkansas. “I am also hoping to get back into running,” she smiles, “so that I can keep up with my sister in a half marathon soon.” Although travel certainly has not been the same for the last couple of years, Dr. Carlock says this time has given her a greater appreciation for getting out and exploring locally. She does, however, hope to travel to Europe and possibly England this summer if her schedule allows. “My most memorable trip was to New Zealand the summer after my freshman year of college,” she recalls. “It was a study abroad trip through the biology department and we got to go on breathtaking hikes, relax on beautiful beaches, explore White Island, go blackwater rafting, hike glaciers, and even help shear sheep! It was my first international trip, and it was unforgettable.”

Though she considers herself to be more introverted, Dr. Carlock thrives on interpersonal connections and building relationships with her patients. “For many years, I strived for perfection, pushed myself to unreasonable limits, and worried about things far beyond my control. Now, I am much more focused on living in the present, enjoying each day, and fostering friendships and relationships. Because of this growth, I am a happier person, a better friend, and a more empathetic clinician. My patients mean everything to me … they are family. I want to see pictures from your daughter’s wedding and to hear about upcoming vacations. I want to take care of you, your children, and your grandmother for many years to come.” w

Thomas Jefferson and John Adams both died on July 4, 1826, within five hours of each other on the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Americans consume about 150 million hot dogs during the 4th of July holiday. The average age of the signers of the Declaration of Independence was 45; the youngest was 26, and 70-year-old Benjamin Franklin was the oldest.

The Declaration of Independence was written on a laptop—it was a writing desk that could fit over one’s lap and was referred to at the time as a “laptop.”

Thomas Jefferson was reportedly the first American to write an ice cream recipe.

During the Revolutionary War, George Washington commemorated July 4th by issuing double the rations of rum to each soldier in the Continental Army.

WOMAN TO WATCH

LKNW RECOGNIZES A WOMAN DOING EXCEPTIONAL WORK IN THE LAKE NORMAN COMMUNITY, A LEADER WHO IS PAVING THE WAY TO CHANGING OUR ATTITUDES AND INSPIRING CONFIDENCE IN THE FUTURE.

on LEADERSHIP:

Michele Edwards, the owner of Studio 73 Dance in Huntersville, didn’t have to look far for a role model when it came to leadership. Growing up in Concord, North Carolina, hers resided under her roof—her mother. “My mom is a strong woman who lives life to the fullest,” Michele says with unmistakable admiration. “She is faithful, a prayer warrior, a wonderful cook, and has led the members of our family to be independent in all areas of life.”

on WHAT’S NEW AT STUDIO 73:

mi chele EDWARDS STUDIO 73 DANCE

“We returned from our 23rd Annual Recital event in May and immediately began preparing to compete on the national stage with Imagine Dance Challenge this summer in Nashville. We took on 31 routines and 44 competition dancers to take part in this amazing opportunity to compete, dance, and mingle with dancers and families from across the country. We are now gearing up for our 24th Dance Season with our annual Open House being held next month, and then our 2022-2023 Dance Season will begin the week of August 22. We’ve added a few new teachers to our staff for the upcoming season, and registration for classes is well underway—with many classes having already met the full capacity enrollment. We’ve also added two musical theatre classes to our lineup.”

A PERSONAL NOTE:

CHASSÉ TO NEW BEATS:

“My husband and I just celebrated our 23rd wedding anniversary, and both our kids are making us proud parents! Our daughter Finley just completed her freshman year at the University of South Carolina and made the President’s List her first semester and Dean’s List her second semester; she is participating in a studyabroad program in Spain and France this summer. Our son, Easton, completed his sophomore year in high school and is enjoying a summer filled with soccer camps, vacation, and work. As a family, we look forward to our annual Hilton Head trip in late July before Finley returns to South Carolina for her sophomore year and Easton gears up for high school varsity soccer tryouts. “By returning to a somewhat normal school year and dance season, we have learned to always seek the opportunity in every obstacle. We’ve continued to learn and grow at Studio 73, to chassé to new beats along the way, and continue to find ways to allow dance to be an intricate part of our daily lives as together we ‘Empower Individuals to Grace the Stages of Life Through DANCE,’ one step at a time! w

Grilled Caprese Chicken Sliders

*

It’s officially Summer and that means two things to me - juicy, vine-ripe tomatoes and firing up the grill!

of these pleasures is to make Grilled Caprese Chicken Sliders. Simply top grilled chicken parmesan patties with traditional Caprese toppings fresh mozzarella, basil pesto, and a juicy tomato slice. Serve in a ciabatta roll, and boring grilled chicken becomes a hand-held Italian summer treat! MY FAVORITE WAY TO ENJOY BOTH

These little sandwiches have all the flavor of their Italian salad inspiration, and their petite size is perfect for little ones, or as a starter, and they are super easy to make ahead of time. However, you may find yourself wanting a larger portion, as the ground chicken, parmesan, and herb mixture creates such a juicy, flavorful patty. This recipe makes 6 slider-size patties, or 4 full-size patties. w

CAPRESE CHICKEN SLIDERS SERVINGS: 6 | PREP TIME: 10 MINUTES | COOKING TIME: 12 MINUTES

INGREDIENTS 1 lb. ground chicken 2 tablespoons chopped fresh basil + more for garnish 2 tablespoons - chopped fresh parsley 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese 1 garlic clove - minced ½ teaspoon salt 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 8 oz. ball of fresh mozzarella - sliced 2 Roma tomatoes - sliced ½ cup refrigerated prepared pesto 4 count - ciabatta rolls sliced & cut in half

INSTRUCTIONS In a medium bowl, combine ground chicken, basil, parsley, Parmesan, garlic, and ½ teaspoon salt. Use a fork to mix thoroughly. Form into 6 patties, drizzle with olive oil, and turn to coat. Set aside and cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate, if not cooking right away. Next, prepare garnishes. Slice mozzarella into ¼ inch slices. Then, use a 2-inch round cookie cutter to cut out cheese to fit the patties. Similarly, slice Roma tomatoes into ¼ inch slices. Finally, remove pesto from the refrigerator to allow it to come to room temperature while the chicken cooks.

*

N OT E S :

For ease of slicing, make sure mozzarella is cold and use a serrated bread knife.

*

When making a slider-sized burger, the smaller Roma tomatoes are a good choice for garnish.

*

Add extra flavor by adding the tops and bottoms of ciabatta rolls to the grill for the last couple minutes - just until you see a little char develop.

*

To keep with the Italian theme, we used ciabatta rolls, but really any small roll would work. Note, for small sliders, you may want to cut the rolls in half.

When ready, preheat a grill or greased grill pan. Cook patties over indirect or medium heat for 5 minutes on each side, or until patties reach 165 degrees. Then, top each patty with a slice of mozzarella, cover the grill, and cook 1 minute more while the cheese melts. Remove from the grill. Finally, transfer the sliders to ciabatta rolls. Top each chicken patty with 1 tablespoon pesto, 1 slice of tomato, basil, and additional parmesan.

SUCCESS STORY

KRISTEN STAGGS

BOHN BODY ARMOR

A

Mooresville resident and president of Bohn Body Armor, success and serendipity go hand in hand. “I sort of fell into my current business,” she says. “My husband raced motorcycles at an early age and always had a passion for them. I dabbled briefly in the HarleyDavidson world working for a vendor of theirs, so I had some familiarity with motorcycles.” FOR KRISTEN STAGGS,

Kristen, who grew up in Rhode Island and has also lived in Kauai, Massachusetts, and California, says gigs in restaurants, retail, and sales helped her really get a feel for how people tick. “I also worked at a marketing and design agency in California as a sales and project manager for over 15 years,” she explains, “and I learned a lot about growing a business, branding, design, and online marketing while I was there." The driving force of her professional life is Bohn Body Armor, the company she and her husband took over in 2017. Overseeing the creation of comfortable motorcycle clothing for riders of all shapes and sizes, she couldn’t have predicted a career in performance wear but, in hindsight, it makes perfect sense. “I didn’t grow up saying I wanted to own a motorcycle clothing company,” she smiles, “but this business has really tapped into my abilities and talents and my insatiable need to help people. When I get a call about an accident one of our customers was in and they say “the gear saved their limbs” or their life, that really motivates me to keep going. I truly love to help people, so this company helps me do that.” Kristen is also someone who relishes friends and family time (she has a beautiful son, Brady, who turns 7 this month) and strives to find a sense of calm each and every day. “Juggling the business, family and friends has its challenges,” she says. “Eating right and making sure I get a daily walk or run seems to help keep me balanced. I often listen to healing music or educational things when I exercise so that it takes the focus off of home life and business for a bit.”

I TRULY LOVE TO HELP PEOPLE, SO THIS COMPANY HELPS ME DO THAT. As for the future of Bohn, Kristen points out that she’s always pushing for innovation, and that adds to her passion for helping others: “One of the projects I am working on right now is adjusting our clothing patterns to fit our big and tall customers—including women. It’s something that I am really excited about. The motorcycle industry has sort of left these folks behind and they struggle to find protective gear that is comfortable and fits them properly.” Keeping her customers safe and comfortable will always be what fuels her professionally, but she also makes time in her life for things that are personally important to her: “Having a caring heart for others is truly the key to a happy life for me, but I also get a lot of joy out of learning and growing emotionally, physically, and spiritually—personal growth is a daily thing for me.” w WRITER

ECKHART TOLLE HAS GUIDED PEOPLE

around the globe toward a life of inner peace, greater fulfillment, and enlightenment on a freeing level. AN EXCERPT FROM THE POWER OF NOW: A GUIDE TO SPIRITUAL ENLIGHTENMENT BY ECKHART TOLLE

When someone goes to the doctor and says, “I hear a voice in my head,” he or she will most likely be sent to a psychiatrist. The fact is that, in a very similar way, virtually everyone hears a voice, or several voices, in their head all the time: the involuntary thought processes that you don’t realize you have the power to stop. The voice comments, speculates, judges, compares, complains, likes, dislikes, and so on. The voice isn’t necessarily relevant to the situation you find yourself in at the time; it may be reviving the recent or distant past or rehearsing or imagining possible future situations. Here it often imagines things going wrong and negative outcomes; this is called worry. Sometimes this soundtrack is accompanied by visual images or mental movies. Even if the voice is relevant to the situation at hand, it will interpret it in terms of the past. This is because the voice belongs to your conditioned mind, which is the result of all your past history as well as of the collective cultural mind-set you inherited. So you see and judge the present through the eyes of the past and get a totally distorted view of it. It is not uncommon

for the voice to be a person’s own worst enemy. Many people live with a tormentor in their head that continuously attacks and punishes them and drains them of vital energy. It is the cause of untold misery and unhappiness, as well as of disease. The good news is that you can free yourself from your mind. This is the only true liberation. You can take the first step right now. Start listening to the voice in your head as often as you can. Pay particular attention to any repetitive thought patterns, those old gramophone records that have been playing in your head perhaps for many years. This is what I mean by “watching the thinker,” which is another way of saying: listen to the voice in your head, be there as the witnessing presence. When you listen to that voice, listen to it impartially. That is to say, do not judge. Do not judge or condemn what you hear, for doing so would mean that the same voice has come in again through the back door. You’ll soon realize there is the voice, and here I am listening to it; I am watching it. This “I am” realization (a sense of your own presence) is not a thought … it arises from beyond the mind. w
