SHOWCASE After a two-year hiatus, the Pasadena Showcase House of Design returns in 2022 with everything you know and love. Welcome to Oaklawn Manor, a stately 1905 English Tudor mansion anchored within a historic Greene and Greeneplanned neighborhood of century-old homes in South Pasadena. Featuring baronial-sized rooms, historic stained glass windows, multiple fireplaces, and a magnificent ballroom staircase, the mansion was originally built by and for English civil engineer Harry Hawgood. After more than 115 years, we are pleased to bring new life into this grand home while honoring the historic nature of the neighborhood. The pool and cabana, which were added in 1955, have also been lovingly renovated. And yet, Showcase is more than just a pretty house! We invite you to explore the gardens at your own pace.
We encourage you to visit the Shops at Showcase for unique merchandise and bring something special home with you. Experience the magic of music with performances throughout the week featuring members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and musical groups from our Gifts & Grants program—you are sure to be delighted and entertained. We are immensely grateful to our talented designers and craftspeople who exquisitely created this year’s Showcase. They have worked tirelessly for months to transform every inch of the property. We thank our generous sponsors, patrons, and resources who have contributed in a variety of ways. Another vital part of our success is the contribution of our community
is Back! volunteers who partner with us
to staff during Showcase. We are also grateful to our wonderful neighbors who welcomed us back to South Pasadena for the first time in more than 40 years. Finally, we are forever indebted to the members of Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts, who are some of the best volunteers around. Their dedication and resourcefulness cannot be over-emphasized. This year has been an incredible experience, and we are honored to have taken this journey with these talented women and men. Thank you for visiting Showcase. Your attendance has made it possible for us to contribute over $24 million in support of local music programs and has brought a lasting legacy to the community. Enjoy!

A 501(c)3 California corporation founded in 1948, PSHA is an all-volunteer organization, whose members donate their time and talents to present three annual music programs, administer gifts and grants to other nonprofit organizations that provide music programs, and accomplish the formidable feat of producing the Pasadena Showcase House of Design as their annual fundraiser.

P
means
PSHA supports a diverse group of arts programs: musical theater, orchestra, jazz ensembles, marching bands and choral groups at local schools, music therapy for at-risk children, funding concerts to ensure that live music is available to a broad range of audiences, and much more. These programs provide opportunities for a variety of groups, from students to seniors, to learn, enjoy, and grown from their experiences. Additionally, PSHA has a longstanding history of sponsoring the Los Angeles Philharmonic and its community outreach programs.

“Thank you so much for visiting Emperor Elementary School. The students were enthralled by the many instruments and your presentation, and I think many of them were inspired to try playing musical instruments in the future.” –Sandy Johnson, 3rd grade teacher
When so many public schools are struggling to fund arts programs for their students, these words of gratitude motivate our Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts (PSHA) members to work even harder to support Music MobileTM. Each year, our program visits primarily Title I schools in the San Gabriel Valley to introduce 3rd grade students to the magic of the symphony and orchestral instruments.

MOBILE
TM
Since 2005, we have partnered with Pasadena Conservatory of Music (PSM) to administer and present the Music MobileTM program. PCM provides the administrative staff, a conductor, and all the instruments, while two PSHA volunteers are available to assist. During each one-hour assembly, the program teaches children about symphonic music with an entertaining and child-friendly presentation. Then, with the help of Showcase volunteers, the students are given hands-on experience with a variety of instruments. And that’s when the real fun begins! Since its inception, Music MobileTM has reached almost 128,000 children. The program was paused from 2020 to 2022 as there was no in-class learning in the schools
that we serve. However, that hiatus has served as an opportunity to redesign the beloved program to make it even more engaging and relevant to our students. We look forward to bringing Music MobileTM back to our schools in the near future. We are justifiably proud of the success of Music MobileTM and with funding from the annual Pasadena Showcase House of Design, our organization will continue to support this award-winning program.

CONCERT
Since 1953, the Pasadena Showcase House of Arts has held its annual Youth Concert, introducing nearly a quarter million fourth graders to the symphony with a concert performed by the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. And since 2003, the program has been held at the iconic Walt Disney Concert Hall, one of the world’s most remarkable music venues. Here, the hall comes alive with music and laughter as more than 4,000 enthusiastic fourth-grade students experience the wonder of an original, live orchestral theater production. Designed to weave musical concepts into an appealing storyline, the production often includes humor and utilizes actors, visual effects, and theatrical devices to keep students engaged. Letters from the attendees demonstrate the knowledge they have gained and the joy of the experience. Each student is given a program with lessons disguised in games and puzzles. Teachers are provided printed material to supplement the information taught at the concert. For most students in the audience, this is their first opportunity to witness the incredible architecture of Walt Disney Concert Hall and their first exposure to classical music.

COMPETITION
Since its inception in 1985, the Pasadena Showcase House Instrumental Competition has awarded over $500,000 in prize money. Musicians who play string, woodwind, and brass instruments compete for individual prizes that range from $500 to $4,000 to further their education. Most competitors have gone on to have distinguished careers. It’s a great source of pride for PSHA to make a contribution to their education and professional success. This year’s 35th annual competition took place at the Pasadena Conservatory of Music on March 19, 2022. It was the first time that students ages 14 to 19 were chosen to compete. Though the 2020/2021 competition was paused for a year due to the pandemic, it gave PSHA time to explore new

recommendations for revising and improving the past program. The competition was judged by musicians of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and headed by Evan Kuhlmann (bassoon). The other judges included Dahae Kim (cello), Burt Hara (clarinet), Michelle Tseng (violin), Tianyun Jia (violin), and Jeffrey Strong (trumpet). A total of $18,500 in prize money was awarded from the proceeds of PSHA’s annual benefit. The Rustic Gourmet provided an excellent catering experience, as usual. A special thanks goes out to all our volunteers, who were ready, willing, and very able to help. Sally Hazen PSHA Instrumental Competition Chair

Love Showcase? Consider becoming a member. Most members of Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts (PSHA) volunteer because of a deep desire to help provide funding for the arts. Like all community service, the real benefits are intangible but deeply gratifying. Design and architecture aficionados are attracted to PSHA because they enjoy observing the renovation of an estate for the Pasadena Showcase House of Design and the opportunity to learn about new design products and concepts. However, it is important to note that the majority of PSHA positions are not related to design. Others are drawn to PSHA because of their belief that music programs need to be championed in the competitive arena of philanthropic funding and that such programs have enormous value to the individuals served and to the entire community. Most members find a camaraderie that often flourishes in life-long friendships. Many cherished memories have been made at the end of the day as members debrief and share experiences. Recently, a member was asked about the legendary commitment of PSHA members. Her response was, “It is the personal stories about how these funds impact the community, especially its children, that compel us all to roll up our sleeves and work even harder. It is an honor to be a part of this legacy.”

June Bloom was a huge success.
a progressive garden party
In 2021, the pandemic prevented us from executing a traditional Showcase House of Design, so PSHA pivoted and created a one-day outdoor progressive garden party on June 19 called June Bloom. Three beautiful properties in the heart of La Cañada-Flintridge—a 1917 Mediterranean villa, a 1921 traditional colonial home, and a 1926 country German estate— opened their gates to 2,000 visitors for shopping, live music, floral demonstrations, food and wine, and docent-led garden tours.

Our
HISTORY
F
For music lovers, 1948 was a year of transformational events. It marked the introduction of the first transistor radio, allowing people to listen to music anywhere they went. It ushered in the LP or “long playing” 33-rpm record, eventually becoming the standard format of popular music over the next three decades. And in Pasadena, a group of music enthusiasts convened over tea at the home of Mrs. John B. Callery to launch a music legacy.
BRENT CHANG
Operating as the Pasadena Junior Philharmonic Committee and led by Mrs. Callery as its president, plans were made to raise money for a series of Pasadena concerts by the Los Angeles Philharmonic. The 18 founding members met their early fundraising goals with a series of traditional events: a shipwreck party, a casino night, an assortment of bridge tournaments, and popular gatherings around a new thingamajig called a television. These TV parties were well received as they had an added attraction for guests: people could dress up as their favorite small screen stars of the time like Lucille Ball (I Love Lucy) and Jackie Gleason (The Honeymooners). In those early years, the parties brought in $3,000 to $5,000 annually (or $32,000 to $54,000 in today’s dollars)—no small change, but something much bigger was on the horizon. → Page Sponsored By: Undine Schwarz in memory of Helga Paterson 30

In 1965, the Committee opened the doors to the first Pasadena Showcase House of Design and the whole town came. With an abundance of imagination and hard work, community support was enthusiastic and abundant. The Committee, later known as the Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts (PSHA), would raise over $11,000 in the first year. Admission was $1.50, which included coffee and cookies, and approximately 7,500 attended. With street parking in short supply, automobiles often camped on a neighbor’s lawn. (By contrast, today’s tickets range from $35-$60 and visitors are shuttled in from a nearby location.) In 1970, “Art Sales” provided by two local artists joined the marquee, a precursor to The Shops at Showcase. Today, roughly 25 vendors fill the Shops and do a brisk business. Refreshments have evolved from coffee and cookies into lunches provided by members, then a cafeteria, and now a fullservice restaurant, a gourmet-to-go station, al fresco dining, wines, and pubs. What a long, lively, and fascinating trip it has been—a testament to the unshakable dedication of PSHA members, the countless hours they volunteer, the talent and financial commitment of the designers, and so many others who donate their time, services, products, and money. Thanks to them, the Pasadena Showcase House of Design has become one of the oldest, largest, and most successful home and garden tours in the country.

EMPTY HOUSE PARTY Nearly 400 design enthusiasts, patrons, and members of PSHA attended the Empty House Party on January 21, 2022 at Oaklawn Manor in South Pasadena. The annual tradition is a celebration the night before designers begin their work transforming the mansion that will debut as the Pasadena Showcase House of Design. The soiree, chaired by Marybeth Rehman-Dittu, Kerri Terrill, and Shari Domenghini, treated guests and media to a sneak peek of Oaklawn Manor.
BRADLEY & SUSAN MOHR
During the evening, guests mingled among the 20+ design spaces viewing various design concepts and installations while enjoying an impressive selection of culinary offerings from local favorites Fish King, Kogi, Mijares Mexican Restaurant, and Porto’s Bakery. A lively jazz trio entertained guests during their tour.

WELCOME TO OAKLAWN MANOR Anchoring a historic Greene and Greene-planned neighborhood of century-old homes, this stately 1905 English Tudor mansion provides exquisite living atop a sprawling estate of natural beauty. Built for Mr. Harry Hawgood, an English civil engineer whose career designing railways and waterways spanned multiple continents, the home’s concrete construction eschewed popular wood framing of the time and has led many to believe Mr. Hawgood himself was the architect. Despite its unique concrete construction, the home contains rich wood interiors and intriguing period details including stained glass windows, ornate beamed ceilings, and floor-to-ceiling travertine fireplaces. Artistically landscaped sunken gardens wrap around the home with scenic paths leading down to the hidden edges of the property.

WELCOME GARDEN & VERANDA The idea of the Welcome Garden theme is to combine the old-fashioned feel of an English garden with the modern vibe typical of the California living experience. Fragrant roses provide color while creating formality.Features of the garden also include a mini orchard planted on the east side of the garden. Accent plants in terra cotta pots frame the permeable patio that is illuminated with industrial string lighting. The terra cotta pots are also featured on the Veranda to continue the overall old-world feel. The color scheme is strategically selected for an ombré effect, including the

The design of the Powder Room was heavily influenced by the historical nature and character of this 1905 Tudor home. Situated in a Greene and Greene-designed neighborhood, I felt compelled to embrace the Arts and Crafts movement by rejecting mass production and having each piece stand out as a work of art. One-of-a-kind pieces enrich the space: the custom vanity and mirror are embellished with extended box joints and mortise and tenon joinery along with blown glass sconces and a hand-painted ceiling. Adorning the masculine walls of Tudor style is a 1904 Vanity Fair cover of Marie Curie, which secures the space with femininity along with the floor and ceiling.

The decorative palette consists of vibrant Thibaut fabrics and wall coverings in bold green hues and soothing neutrals. The contemporary floral wall covering and evergreen grasscloth ceiling set the tone of the Sunroom. The serene atmosphere is achieved by using a limited color palette, utilizing straight lines, simple shapes, and streamlined storage. The muted tile covering the back wall of the bathroom provides color without noise, and a floating vanity features beautiful marble extending up the back wall to the ceiling. A gorgeous sconce helps lend visual effect, and the striking floor is embellished with brushed brass Schluters. Overall, this entire room is both calming and irresistible.

YOUNG GENTLEMAN’S QUARTERS The Young Gentleman’s Quarters is all about sophisticated yet easy living in a difficult time. Designed during the last coronavirus surge, I focused on what a young gentleman would need to live comfortably while having to spend more time at home. KITCHEN The Kitchen is no longer a utilitarian space for cooking but rather a place of gathering—it’s the heart of the home. When designing the kitchen, our firm drew inspiration from the house’s architecture. We always strive to create warm, inviting, and layered spaces, and in this state-of the-art kitchen, old-world finishes and detailing meet modern day technology. The space is designed for the home chef who loves to entertain. In addition to looking good, the kitchen is designed to be lived in while preserving performance. Blackened steel, hand-planed walnut, polished nickel, bronze, and end grain walnut butcher block are some of the finishes that have been utilized. Combined with modern appliances including a hearth oven, wine sommelier, and the first-of-its-kind pro range, the end result is a kitchen with character, soul, and the feel of a restaurant in the home.
