P UL A Almost at the southern tip of Istria, on its south-western coast, the largest town on the peninsula. Since Istrian history goes back 3.000 years Pula and its territory offers a variety of attractions to lovers of culture. Pula is situated on the beautiful Adriatic coast on the southernmost part of the Istrian peninsula in a well protected bay known by its Latin name, Pietas Iulia. It is a city full of history, where nearly every stone has a story to tell. The early beginnings of Pula date back three millennia to the Colchis seafarers in search of the „Golden Fleece“ who established Pula some 3,000 years ago. Much like the rest of the region, Pula has mild climate and is famous for its unspoiled nature. The favourable geographical position, history and rich cultural and historical monuments make Pula one of the most attractive tourist destinations in the eastern Adriatic Sea. If you visit Pula, you will hear the story of mythical

Argonauts, Romans, Venetians, Franks and the Austro-Hungarian period. One of the sights you shouldn‘t miss in Pula is the Arena, a magnificent Roman amphitheater; totally build from white marmor stones, sixth by size in the world, and surely one of the most beautiful. Like the rest of the region, it is well known for its mild climate, tame sea and unspoiled nature: nearly 200 kilometres of indented coastline with wonderful beaches and a crystal-clear sea. The city has a long tradition of winemaking, fishing, shipbuilding, and tourism. Therefore, the Finish Line will be in the Arena with an energized atmosphere, together with all supporters and triathlon enthusiasts. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to enter an amphitheater as a finisher? Imagine the deafening sound, the excitement and the rush of adrenalin. You will feel like a modern gladiator coming into the Arena to celebrate your own victory! Every step you take through the old town is a landmark, foremost its numerous monuments of Roman architecture. www.pula.hr

The history of Pula starts with the myth of the Argonauts and the search for the Golden Fleece. It was the home of the Histrians, the Romans and the Venetians. Once the central Austrian port, today it is the largest cultural and economic center of Istria. Various layers of history took part in the making of this unique town in which Roman temples defy baroque palaces, early Christian churches stand face to face to Austrian villas, and the remnants of mediaeval walls are cut through by antique town gates. The legend of the Argonauts describes the pursuit of the Colchidians after the ship Argo and the Golden Fleece. The subjects of the king of Colchis gave up further pursuit after the death of their king’s son. Fearing that they would be punished for his death and the failure of the quest if they returned to Colchis, they decided to settle where the prince had died. Pula therefore became not only a harbor of refuge to the Colchidian fugitives, but also their place of exile. The most famous geographer of the
antiquity, Strabo, claims that this is how Pula was founded and according to this legend, it was about three thousand yaers ago.
THE ARENA, THE JEWEL OF ROMAN ARCHITECTURE
And then, you will come across the Amphitheatre, revealing itself to you in all its beauty. This is one of the best preserved Roman amphitheatres in the world, the most significant monument in Pula! Arena, the place where gladiators faced lions, used to be able to entertain 25 000 spectators. Although the site of bloody games in the past, the Arena has in modern times transformed into a stage for a very different kind of entertainment. It is the venue of a film festival and great summer performances and concerts. As the largest existing monument of Roman architecture in Croatia, it is living proof of the top-level skills of the masterbuilders of antiquity.

THE HISTORY OF IRONMAN During an awards banquet for the Waikiki Swim Club, John Collins, a Naval Officer stationed in Hawai`i, and his wife Judy, began playing with the idea of combining the three toughest endurance races on the island into one race: the 2.4 mile Waikiki Roughwater Swim, the 112 miles of the Around-O’ahu Bike Race and a 26.2 mile run on the same course as the Honolulu Marathon. They decided to issue a challenge to see who the toughest athletes were: swimmers, bikers, or runners. ”The gun will go off about 7 a.m., the clock will keep running and whoever finishes first we’ll call the IRONMAN”, Collins recalled. 1
2
On February 18, 1978, 15 competitors, including Collins, came to the shores of Waikiki to take on the first-ever IRONMAN challenge. First to cross the finish line was Gordon Haller, a taxi cab driver and fitness enthusiast, who finished in 11 hours, 46 minutes and 58 seconds. In 1980 founders John and Judy Collins give ABC‘s „Wide World of Sports” permission to film the event, bringing worldwide recognition to IRONMAN. Only two years later college student Julie Moss collapses just yards from the IRONMAN World Championship finish line. She is passed for the title, but does not give up; she crawls to the finish line, unknowingly creating one of the most iconic moments in IRONMAN history. Julie’s courage and determination inspires millions and created the IRONMAN mantra that ”ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE”. In 1986, Paula Newby-Fraser of Zimbabwe, won her first IRONMAN Kona, setting a new women’s record of 9:45:14. In 1992, she became the first woman ever to eclipse the nine-hour mark with an 8:55:28 performance and in 1996 she wins her eighth IRONMAN World Championship title. 3

The region is also gaining a reputation amongst cyclists for its quiet roads, exceptional views and challenging hills – that and the 2,000 miles of well-kept bicycle paths that wind between the Pine tree shaded Adriatic bays.
Beside the warm sun and beautiful beaches along the 450km coastline, there’s plenty here to keep you busy.
Of course, activity holidays are Istria’s speciality – it’s the perfect location for sailing, diving, water sports, trekking, tennis, or golf.
The region is punctuated by cultural and historical sites along the coast and throughout Istria’s lush green interior. Here you’ll find picturesque hilltop villages and views to rival anywhere in Provence or Tuscany. Similarly, there’s a treasure trove of local cuisines all waiting to be discovered.

The IRONMAN TriClub Program was introduced in 2015 in Europe and offers clubs and teams a bunch of great benefits and the possibility to participate in a regional and global competition in order to become IRONMAN TriClub Champion 2015! The teams are categorized in five Divisions according to their number of Athletes. TriClub athletes earn points in each IRONMAN and IRONMAN 70.3 Event they race. These points are based on IRONMAN’s Age Group Ranking program and are added up all season long. At the end of the year the Top 3 ranked clubs in each division regionally and globally will receive a trophy from IRONMAN.

Qualification at 10 events per Division-Winner (in 2015, the registered TriClubs may qualify at the following races):
HOW TO EARN POINTS IN TRICLUB-PROGRAM? HOW TO BECOME WINNER? The European IRONMAN TriClub Championship is a unique opportunity for European clubs to compete in selected IRONMAN and IRONMAN 70.3 races selected up to today. By registering for the free program, the clubs do benefit from a range of benefits and have the opportunity to compete with other clubs in a regional and global competition! Each club and each team is assigned by its members number one of five categories (divisions). All club members then link in their IRONMAN account their personal profile with their club. By participating in the IRONMAN and IRONMAN 70.3 events, athletes accumulate points. These are calculated as the Age Group IRONMAN ranking for each athlete • an age group winner gets 3500 (at 70.3) or 5000 points (at 140.6) • an athlete that comes eg 10min after the winner, then 10 x 12 points of 3500 will be deducted; he then got 3380 points • should an athlete have a time difference greater than „Time to Floor”, so he gets in any case the „Minimum Points”
