T
o commemorate former Trustee John O. McNairy’s 20 years of service to the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation, trustees have gifted an honorarium of $250,000 to Lenoir Community College Foundation to help launch its Cars for College program, an economic mobility initiative that will secure transportation for students who are enrolled in Lenoir Community College and earning college credit. The intended outcome is to remove the mobility barriers that often prevent students from owning and operating a safe and dependable motor vehicle. The idea of Cars for College was developed when transportation was identified as a primary factor in students not completing educational programs or continuing enrollment in degree programs. The goal of this program is to assure that low-income working students have access to safe, legal, affordable, and dependable vehicles to get them to college and work instead of purchasing a one-way ticket for every stop they make on the local bus service or having to depend on someone else for a ride to campus.
CARS
The Cars for College program will launch in early 2020, during the spring semester. The way the program will work is that the Lenoir Community College Foundation will acquire vehicles and turn them over to Lenoir Community College’s Automotive Systems Technology Program where any repairs and a diagnostic check for the vehicle will happen. Once the vehicle passes inspection from the Automotive Systems Technology Program, it will be sold by Lenoir Community

6,000-mile warranty.
Students will apply to the Cars for College program through the NCWorks Career Center; which will assess the students’ needs, resources, and work history and provide counseling regarding training, employment, and job placement services. Lenoir Community College advisors will collaborate with the student and NCWorks personnel to get the student enrolled in the appropriate academic program that meets the student’s career goals. The student will agree to complete the degree or certificate program and then be eligible to purchase a car through the program. Lenoir Community College will notify students of the launch of the program by posting on its website and social media platforms as well as utilizing emails, text messaging, and signage around campus. The College will also contact local media to assist in publicizing this innovative program. “I am grateful to have served as a trustee of the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation,” said John O. McNairy. “While I was fortunate to assist the

Foundation in investing in various communities across North Carolina, I am a longtime resident of Lenoir County and have a great appreciation for this part of the state. Cars for College will support students attending Lenoir Community College who have demonstrated that they are committed to attaining an education and have created a plan to carry out their future goals. This is a collaborative program, spearheaded by the Lenoir Community College Foundation, that I am confident will result in countless opportunities for young people,” he said. “We were extremely grateful, and fortunate, to have John’s perspective and expertise on the board of the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation for 20
years,” said W. Noah Reynolds, president of the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation. “This honorarium is a token of our appreciation not only for John’s contributions to the Foundation and to North Carolina, but also to support his continued efforts to make Eastern North Carolina a great place to live and work,” he said. “We are very thankful of this award as it will make a significant difference to our students and to the communities we serve by assisting those who may not have an opportunity to get an education and training because of transportation and financial barriers,” said LCC President Dr. Rusty Hunt. “With reliable transportation, low-income working students can experience success as

members of the workforce. Without it, they will struggle each day to reach the jobs, classes, or training that could bring them economic security. We are appreciative of John’s (McNairy) longtime support of the College and its Foundation and we are excited to launch this new initiative that will help our students in achieving a more productive future.” Cars for College expects to provide vehicles for more than 20 eligible students during its first three years of operation.

enoir Community College and two other North Carolina community colleges have joined forces with Elizabeth City State University to educate the next generation of aviators. The agreement with LCC, Guilford Technical Community College, and Sandhills Community College will bring community college transfer students to ECSU’s signature aviation science program in Elizabeth City. ECSU is the only four-year university in North Carolina offering a bachelor’s degree in aviation science. The
university currently operates a 10-fleet airplane flight program and will launch a bachelor program in unmanned aerial systems, or drones this fall. The three community colleges currently offer aviation programs and, according to school officials, have not been able to transfer students to a public North Carolina university to advance their aviation degree work, until now.
“THIS IS AN IMPORTANT PARTNERSHIP FOR US. OUR PROGRAM HAS BEEN IN OPERATION FOR 49 YEARS, EDUCATING STUDENTS IN AVIATION MANAGEMENT AND FLIGHT INSTRUCTION. NOW WE HAVE THE ABILITY TO PARTNER WITH A NORTH CAROLINA FOUR-YEAR PROGRAM.” Dr. Rusty Hunt

enoir Community College added its newest Health Sciences program – Electroneurodiagnostic Technology or END, as it is known in the field. This however is not the “end” for students seeking this degree, but the beginning.
NEW
“The purpose of the Electroneurodiagnostic Program is to prepare individuals to go to work in the neurology field alongside neurologists, neurosurgeons, and other healthcare professionals” Program Chair Beth Payne said, “Neurodiagnostic technicians will be trained to look for neurological deficits, such as seizures, encephalopathies, trauma, etc. They will learn to record and read electrical neural outputs of the brain, nerve
pathways, and muscles, and assist physicians to accurately diagnose, treat, and educate patients. Graduates will work alongside physicians to manage patient’s progress and care.” Payne is also the program chair of the Polysomnography (Sleep Medicine) Program where individuals, working in conjunction with a physician, are prepared to perform and interpret sleep studies and to provide comprehensive clinical evaluations that are required for the diagnosis of sleep studies. “The main difference between END and polysomnography is that while polysomnography deals with sleep disorders, END looks for neurologic disorders. With both programs, electrical output from the body are looked at to discover disorders or deficits.” In the first couple of semesters, students can expect to learn the fundamentals of healthcare, such as

The equipment students use while practicing in lab will be identical to what they see in their clinical rotations, and at their jobs after graduation.” Students must complete more than 300 hours of clinical work to graduate. technicians in the country.”
The Electroneurodiagnostic Program at LCC is one of two in the state. “A strength of the program is having the polysomnography sister program. This means LCC is already equipped with the tools needed to teach this type of health science program effectively,” Payne said. “Strong bonds with clinical sites have already been made, which allows the College to provide their students with the best clinical experiences possible.”

rom Raleigh to the coast, students are coming to Lenoir Community College to enroll in the Graphic Arts and Imaging Technology Program (GAIT). This program focuses on providing students with training in graphic design, digital printing, web design, photography, offset lithography, screen printing, and other areas in the printing, publishing, and packaging industry. “We are only one of three GAIT programs in the NC Community College System,” says Program Chair Dwight Downie. “We take pride in that we have been providing students training in graphic arts for more than 40 years” To meet the needs of recent demand in the digital marketing world, graphics has added a new program, Advertising and Graphic Design, which began accepting students in the fall. “We are excited to see this program come to life. We
have seen the need for digital media specialists and graphic designers increase over the years,” Downie said. This program is designed to give students the skills and knowledge necessary to create visual materials that will inspire, inform, and captivate consumers. As a graduate of the GAIT Program and a successful creative business owner, Brandon Potter of Potter Photography & Design and Magic Mile Screen Printing, agrees that the need for graphic designers is at an all-time high. “The Advertising and Graphic Design Program is needed in today’s digital world. Businesses and industries are looking for skilled graduates to fill the need for graphic designers and marketing specialists,” Potter said. The Advertising and Graphic Design Program will complement the GAIT Program in that students will be able to earn an Associate in Applied Science degree in Graphic Arts and Imaging Technology and by taking just four additional classes, students can earn an Associate in Applied Science degree in Advertising and Graphic Design as well.

orth Lenoir High School 2018 graduate Grayson Shreves made his decision to attend Lenoir Community College rather than going to a four-year university based on a guarantee LCC made to him. He received the LCC Guarantee Scholarship, a scholarship in which area students who achieve academic success in high school could get their first two years of college free. The LCC Guarantee Scholarship provides an incentive to high-achieving students to choose Lenoir Community College as their launching point to transfer and career opportunities. “I enrolled at LCC originally

so nice and helpful. I just don’t think I would have gotten that anywhere else.” To qualify for the LCC Guarantee, students must graduate from a service area high school—public, private, or homeschool— with NC resident eligibility, complete nine Career and College Promise (CCP) credits with a C or better, graduate high school with a 3.0+ unweighted Grade Point Average (GPA), and enroll as a full-time student the following fall semester at LCC after high school graduation. “The LCC Guarantee provides an affordable avenue to college and reduces the need for student borrowing,” said LCC President Dr. Rusty Hunt. “These students are already invested in Lenoir Community College by completing nine CCP credits in high school. This is an opportunity for them to continue their college career at no cost to them or their parents.”

enoir Community College President Dr. Rusty Hunt met with legislators to accept a $200,000 donation given by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of NC (Blue Cross NC). LCC is one of five community colleges across the state awarded the donation to help fight the opioid epidemic. Blue Cross NC made the $1 million investment with the North Carolina Community College System to help fund emergency medical sciences associate degree programs. The investment will address
the rising health care needs in North Carolina, including the opioid epidemic, by supporting student academic success, faculty recruitment, retention, professional development, state-of-the-art equipment, and technology such as simulation manikins that give students real-time feedback.

Donors to the Foundation help students pursue lifelong learning as a way to a better future.
T
he Lenoir Community College Foundation, Inc., a non-profit organization, was founded in 1972. Its mission is to secure resources that increase financial assistance to students, improve educational programs, and provide ongoing support to modernize and expand facilities at LCC. As donors, you understand the impact of higher education in our communities. It is a simple but true statement that a high school diploma is no longer enough to grant access to a good job and a pleasant lifestyle. To help combat the barrier to education in Lenoir, Greene, and Jones Counties, the Foundation established the LCC Guarantee. This program allows high school students from the service area to attend the College tuition-free. The first group of LCC
FOUNDATION
MESSAGE Guarantee students began their educational endeavors just 12 months ago. The program has grown from 43 students last fall to 102 students this semester. I anticipate that the program will continue to grow as students realize that the Guarantee can provide the education and skills they need for our rapidly changing economy. Why is this important to our community? The Guarantee is a way to promote the economic and social prosperity of our residents, our families, and our community. Businesses will be more likely to invest in a community where
the workers are prepared for the jobs they need filled. Education can break the cycle of intergenerational poverty and help provide a safer environment for the community. Donors to the Foundation help students pursue lifelong learning as a way to a better future. On behalf of the LCC Foundation Board of Directors, faculty, staff, and students, I say thank you for your support. Without you, there would be no Foundation to assist students. You make great things happen at LCC.
