DEAR READERS, DEAR TESLA OWNERS AND CLUB MEMBERS, DEAR SHAREHOLDERS, DEAR EV ENTHUSIASTS, Welcome to the second edition of SuperCharged, your independent Magazine for Tesla Owners, Club Members, Shareholders and EV enthusiasts. SuperCharged is available online, with past editions. www.superchargedmagazine.com We are delighted to present to you, your Community Magazine for TESLA Owners and enthusiasts.

6

Why SuperCharged? As a metaphor to our amazing cars, we are SuperCharged, full of emotions, willingness to ‘be the change we would like to see in the World’, full of energy to nurture a stunning Community of Ambassadors, Entrepreneurs and peers and last but not least, boost the rEVolution towards a cleaner Future. We have redefined and raised the bar to the basic definition of ‘fans’. We are Community-minded, Early Adopters and Influencers embracing the opportunity to change towards a more sustainable lifestyle. Quite a few years ago, we began this journey, starting to build the Community, long before Stores or even Service Centers or Superchargers were deployed. We are aiming at gathering Owners, enthusiasts, shareholders and peers together. Our mission is to support the community in general regarding the rEVolution and the EVangelisation while raising the awareness of the World regarding EV. Tesla Owners Club was officially established on January 2014 as a non profit organization, supported by its Board Members and its 2000 members, all volunteers.

Thanks to its recurrent monthly activities and side events, the Club is leads networking events along with fun activities so that we can all share experiences, tips and tricks and raise the EV awareness among us and demoing our willingness to change towards a more sustainable lifestyle, reaching out for the ‘Blue Economy’ principles. Thanks to all for you outstanding support and the warm welcome of SuperCharged. From direct messages to Reposts and Retweets, not to mention ideas for articles and kind words on the Magazine format; we were overwhelmed by your adoption and enthusiasm. The first edition along with the SuperCharged launch was very successful, thanks to an Amazing Peers Community. A special thanks to Danielle from MasterMail for handling and sending the magazine to our Belgian members. We would like to address our sincere congratulations to Tomas Friedhoff, “Information Officer Tesla Owners Worldwide”, and his Team for reaching out the 10k milestones on the ‘Tesla Owners Worldwide’! We reached to Tomas to learn more about this fantastic journey: “February 29th, Amsterdam. Today is a special day. Coincidentally, it’s February 29th, an occasion we only see every 4 years. It also marks the 469th day of existence of the “Tesla Owners Worldwide” community, which has quickly grown out in the past years to a more than 10 000+ strong membership community of Tesla owners & enthusiasts. At the time started by Florian, a German Tesla Owner, we now count moderators from all over the planet to keep things running smoothly, everybody doing this voluntarily besides their busy jobs.

preface

LATEST NEWS: On friday April 15th, the latest Tesla Motors belgian Service Center and Store was opened in Sint-Martens Latem with Vice Minister Turtelboom, many Customers and EV enthusiasts. www.teslamotors.com/fr_BE/findus/location/store/ghent-latem This is the fourth belgian location.

Coincidentally, when I was asked to write this down, I realised that the proposed Model III launch on March 31st, marks the 500th day of existence of this group. A more beautiful coincidence is hardly imaginable. As a prospective Tesla owner, as I plan to make my reservation for a Model III on March 31st, it is great for me to see the welcoming atmosphere between current owners, prospective owners and enthusiasts. One example of the strength of the community that has stuck with me is of a young Hungarian tech journalist, who really wanted to test drive a Model S, but with only a handful in Hungary at the time, had trouble finding an opportunity to test it. One Austrian owner, living close to the border, spontaneously offered to help him out and drove several 100 km’s to meet up. Better yet, they planned it so that it was in a holiday and this owner toured the country on his own expense, where they also visited several schools so people could experience it. When is the last time you remember anybody doing that for a different brand? As we see politician’s inertia to act on climate change in a meaningful manner, the pace at which this group is growing and the diversity of its members, gives me hope. You see people who have owned similarly priced cars before, as well as people who have been saving up, traded up, because they thought it was important to make a difference. That gives me hope.” In this edition, we will unveil our highlights from our presence at the COP21 Conference held in Paris, along with the RTBF TV Crew. We would like also to introduce a great soul that is doing so much for the eco system: Leilani Munter. A bit geeky but just on time,

Benoit Dupont will share his insights on the connected watches as many manufacturers are now embracing the opportunity to offer new models. When going abroad, it is always a pleasure to continue the EV journey aboard a Tesla! Christian Roy will tell us attend the Nicola Testa concert his side of the story as he operates Taxi Services, in a Model S in Canada. We have also had the pleasure to talk to X and Y regarding the Model X, just launched in Geneva a few weeks ago. Let’s discover their first impressions. Let’s also get acquainted with Jerome d’Ambrosio, a notorious Belgian pilot, involved in the FIA Formula e Grand Prix. After this electrifying encounter, let’s get some altitude and dream BIG .. an Electric Airplane! Erik de Ridder, a Belgian Pilot and visionnaire will tell us about this awesome project in the making. Last but not least, you might have had the chance to attend Nicola Testa concert earlier in March along with the Club Meet and Greet, let’s discover the world and the influences of Nicola Testa. A very warm thank you to all persons who contributed to this edition, directly or indirectly. In addition, we would like to address our express gratitude to the following individuals: Benoit Dupont, Felice Gasperoni, Leilani Munter and her team. Thank you for reading us until the end and your ongoing support to the Community in this journey. We wish you an electrifying read, we hope you will have as much fun reading it as we did during the preparation of this second edition with interesting topics and information. So buckle up and enjoy the ride! We look forward to your impressions, stories and feedbacks as well and we’ll be pleased to welcome you to our monthly events.

IN A TESLA TO THE COP21 CONFERENCE On 30 November and 1 December last, the ‘Alors, on change!’ team went to the Paris Climate Conference or COP21 to record a special programme. To mark the occasion, it used to this effect two Tesla vehicles made available free of charge by Tesla Motors and by the Tesla Owners’ Club Belgium. A golden opportunity to get the feelings of the programme’s producer, Felice Gasperoni, and assess the outcome of this summit on climate with Frédéric Chomé, consultant at Factor-X, an environmental and climate-consultancy agency. TEXT: JACQUES LEGROS - PHOTOS: MARTIN GILLET

“The ‘Alors, on change!’ programme was set up on the basis of the following finding”, explains Felice Gasperoni, its producer: “A third of the Belgian population asks itself questions about its own consumption and way of life and is no longer keeping pace with the model of our society for current consumption. 1% or 2% of these people have decided to do something about it, that is to say, to change their consumer habits and even their social relations. Our programme wants to tell the story of the changes made by these 1% or 2% of people, in the hope that it inspires the remainder of the third of the population which is also concerned and, by extension, that they will then serve as examples for the remaining two-thirds of the population who have not yet asked themselves these questions. Therefore, we decided to apply a model in step with these citizens’ stories, including via 8 TV partnerships - with the RTBF and local TV - and to do this in order to create synergies and economies of scale, reduce travel and therefore CO2 impact, but also to enhance local skills. ‘Alors, on change!’ is currently broadcast once a month on RTBF on Wednesday in the second part of the evening, but also on local channels in Wallonia where its impact is more significant thanks to a loop broadcast. Since the beginning of January, the programme is also rebroadcast daily on La Deux at 1 pm, as an alternative, overflowing with good news, to normal news broadcasts. And audiences are happy about it. People embrace the concept because of this feeling of being fed up with all these bad news stories and prefer to see stories of positive people.”

THE TESLA OWNERS’ CLUB BELGIUM AT COP 21 Also present in Paris seeing as he transported some of the ‘Alors, on change!’ team there, Martin Gillet of the Tesla Owners’ Club Belgium also delivered his opinion to us regarding the Conference on Climate or COP 21: “Sad reality that this ‘agreement’... No constraints... Is there not a philosophical dimension lacking in order to awaken conscience? After all, it is people like us who will have to change and evolve and not those who have made the promises... Another paradox: how to sign an agreement for the well-being of the planet and our survival when our habits, our beliefs and growth curves are not at all or too little questioned? Duly noted.”

VISIBILITY “For a programme like ours, being present at COP21 made real sense. We did not want to speak about the political aspect, but rather of the citizen aspect, as a non-negligible added value in comparison to the other media. That is why we decided to go to Paris. We wanted to mark the occasion by going there in an original way. After having discarded the most ‘low impact’ solutions such as going on foot or by bicycle, as well as the train for its lack of originality, as a fan of electric mobility, I naturally turned to the electric car. Thus, via a friend, I got in contact with Tesla Motors which agreed to put a Tesla S P90D at our disposal. However, given that there were 8 of us going along with equipment, we needed a second vehicle. Martin Gillet of the Tesla Owners’ Club Belgium then graciously offered to transport us on board its Tesla P85+, in exchange for activities on our social networks in order to give more visibility to this club, but also and especially to the Tesla brand. As a fan of electric mobility, I knew the brand well but in contrast this was a real discovery for the other members of the team who were impressed by the technology, the price, the build and the sports performance of these cars which still remain exceptional. In short, a true leap into the future, but which also leaves me with a slight feeling of frustration. It is indeed frustrating that this cost-saving driving, its autonomy and charging speed - technologies that are already well and truly in existence - are not yet accessible to all, mainly because of the oil industry’s lobbying which is delaying progress of electric mobility. In addition, I had to return the car (laughs)!”, concludes Felice Gasperoni.

COP21 OR THE ELEPHANT WHICH GAVE BIRTH TO A MOUSE… Also part of the trip, Frédéric Chomé - Consultant at Factor-X, an environmental and climate agency, and also editorial consultant of the ‘Alors, on change!’ programme - provides for us the final irrevocable outcome of the Paris Conference on Climate. “Unsurprisingly, COP21 resulted in a consensus of minimum standards of what it is possible to do, but in no way reflects what it MUST do to reduce the climatic phenomena which we are going to have befall us, a process which has already started in some parts of the globe. In short, a lot of noise for very minimal advances, insufficient to resolve the problem of our use of fossil fuels in relation to their replacement. Leaders have not dared to question the established order and prefer to remain in the current deadly dynamic. Thus, this COP21 reflects the actual failure of advanced societies to accept responsibility for greenhouse gas emissions related to their consumption (imports included) rather than those of current baselines which are limited to their territorial production of greenhouse gases (limited to domestic). COP21 should have given a vision, a hope to the poorest populations of the planet, but it has just been able to reiterate the errors made over the last 20 to 30 years.” www.facebook.com/alorsonchangeRTBF

MORE CHALLENGING DAYS IN SIGHT “With a disastrous concrete outcome, that is to say a protocol without any effect before 2020, the objectives of which induce a global warming that will rise to at least +4°C at the end of the century and a text still to be ratified by at least 55% of countries that represent at least 55% of the global emissions, I am not very optimistic for having a painless exit door for most people. In global terms the objective is not achievable. 10 billion of us will not be able to live on planet Earth like a European of today. Climate

equity requires the Belgian citizen to divide by 200 his current way of life, which is obviously not feasible. It must therefore be accepted as fact that there are more challenging days facing us than in these past 50 years. Those who understand that a great upheaval of our lives is inevitable will emerge better than those who put blinders on and who will, therefore, be up against the wall. Whether this is a matter of well-being, health, in their entourage, etc., concludes Frédéric Chomé.

A CONVERSATION WITH LEILANI MÜNTER RENOWNED ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIVIST ADVOCATES ELECTRIC CARS Early in 2015, the documentary ‘Racing Extinction’ met with considerable success worldwide, attracting attention with a certain visionary glimpse of what it refers to as the “sixth mass extinction in the world.” The urgent need to help the environment and save certain endangered species is given additional support with the use of a very special version of the Tesla Model S. At the wheel is Leilani Münter, American race car driver, activist, vegan and a leading advocate of electric cars. TEXT: WIM VANDER HAEGEN FOTO’S - PHOTOS: © LEILANI MÜNTER / OPS

OCEANIC PRESERVATION SOCIETY

A ‘VERY SPECIAL’ MODEL S

‘Racing Extinction’ is a provocative 2015 documentary from director Louie Psihoyos, who received an Oscar in 2010 for Best Documentary Feature for ‘The Cove,’ a documentary about dolphin hunting in Japanese culture. In ‘Racing Extinction,’ the renowned filmmaker and the Oceanic Preservation Society (OPS) bring attention to the distressing situation with the impending extinction of animal species. Reasons for the problematic state of affairs include the illegal trade in endangered animals as well as climate change as a result of CO2 and methane emissions. In the film, Leilani Münter tours around in a particularly striking Tesla Model S. Our first question, however, was how she ended up in the film. “I’ve been working for several years as a volunteer for the non-profit organization ‘Ric O’Barry’s Dolphin Project.’ I learned about Ric O’Barry myself through the film ‘The Cove.’ Not long afterwards, I started volunteering for him and raise funds for the project. I went to Japan to document the slaughter of the dolphins in Taiji and raise awareness amongst the global community and along with my brother-in-law Bob Weir, better known as the guitarist for the legendary rock, folk and jam band The Grateful Dead, put on a concert to raise awareness about the issues addressed in ‘The Cove.’ I got to know Ric and the people from the Oceanic Preservation Society personally and was later able to get enough funds to be able to race with ‘The Cove’ on my racecar in Daytona. While we were there, Louie, Ric and I gave out 1000 personally autographed DVDs. In 2012, Louie asked me if I was interested in playing a role in ‘Racing Extinction’ in which I would be at the wheel of a ‘mobile projection vehicle.’ I didn’t hesitate for a second! The car had to be an eco-friendly one, so I knew immediately that it had to be a Tesla. Soon after I took our director Louie to SpaceX to introduce him to Elon Musk and later, after we test drove the Model S, we knew it was the best car for our film and we placed our order.

In the film, Leilani tours around in a Tesla Model S, equipped with an impressive 15,000-Lumen video projector that projects images of endangered species onto buildings – including famous ones – as well as onto the sides of mountains. “The car is also equipped with a high-definition FLIR (Forward Looking Infra Red) camera coming out of the Tesla’s front trunk, nicknamed the ‘frunk,’ which makes CO2 and methane visible to the human eye thanks to a special colour filter. This special Tesla is also the very first car equipped with electro-luminescent paint that emits illumination and forms patterns that mimic those of creatures in the wild. I was really excited about the car, but I was afraid that it would end up in a garage or museum after the movie and just gather dust. Luckily it didn’t get that far, and that Tesla has been utilised to bring attention to environmental issues and the topics discussed in the documentary. We have to change in order to save the earth – that is the message of the car. Also, this attention-getting vehicle is an excellent tool to make people aware of electric cars. They are good long distance vehicles too. For example as part of the filming for ‘Racing Extinction’ I took a 5,000-mile road trip from New York to San Francisco. We also projected onto buildings in Nevada and brought attention to solar energy issues. Nevada is sadly so heavily under the thumb of the energy industry lobby that rooftop solar energy is suppressed and made nearly impossible. Two other sunny states – Arizona and Florida – are also trying to block rooftop solar. Together with Solar City and the Bring Back Solar campaign in Nevada, I really want to blow the lid off this rigorous suppression.”

SUPPORTING SOLAR ENERGY The fact that Leilani is also a huge advocate of solar energy is obvious when you take a look at her home in Charlotte, North Carolina. “Since 2013 I’ve been driving a Tesla Model S myself.

interview

To make sure both my house and my car use clean energy, I use solar panels. And that works perfectly. Personally I have a surplus of electricity every month that I put onto the grid. I drive my Tesla to and from almost all my races so I can promote electric-powered vehicles to the racing community. And along the way, when I stop at the Tesla superchargers, I invite the racing fans to join me and learn about electric cars. It is through my racing career that I have a platform to call attention to the ecological aspects of our world.”

VEGAN GIRL When we got to talking about Leilani’s vegan lifestyle, she was really on a roll. “I’ve been 100% vegan since 2011. Before that I was already living a vegetarian lifestyle, but for the last five years I have not eaten any animal products, I don’t wear any clothes made from animals and there is nothing in my house that even remotely comes from animals.” When Leilani bought a Tesla Model S P85+ Performance Plus in 2013, the car was only available with a leather interior. “You could buy a Tesla with cloth seats, but those were just not available in the performance version that I wanted. In fall of 2013 Tesla began to offer the cloth seats in all versions. Tesla has more recently developed a ‘fake’ leather interior that is now available. The Tesla in ‘Racing Extinction’ also has non-leather upholstery, and that worked out for the best, since the entire OPS team is vegan. It really made no sense to use leather, because the car had to vegan too.”

CONSCIOUS DRIVERS Leilani is convinced that the non-leather version will be a hit with a large number of Tesla drivers. “People who are Tesla fans are conscious consumers, and they know what kind of impact they have on the earth, and many of them care about animals. If you conducted a study of the number of environmentally conscious car owners by brand, I am thoroughly convinced that with Tesla, the number would be significantly higher than with other high-end brands, although I hope that the big names will also follow Tesla’s example soon.”

Leilani is often described as a living advertisement for Tesla. “I am in no way encouraged to promote the brand, I am just a very happy owner. Tesla was the first and the only one that unconditionally chose to make electric cars. The others are following suit now that they have seen that Tesla is successful and that Tesla is taking away their customers, and not because they suddenly became environmentally conscious. My loyalty lies with Tesla because they are the reason everyone else is now starting to make electric cars. Many people in the auto industry said there was no market or interest in electric vehicles. That was so disappointing and I think that Tesla did a really good job of proving the opposite. Tesla is fun, fast and sexy, and those are exactly the things that I value as a race car driver.”

CARBON-FREE GIRL Although Leilani is a very sympathetic and talkative representative, we still could not avoid one potentially sticky question – how do you reconcile being conscious about the environment and climate with being a race car driver? After all, she does drive cars that are powered by fossil fuels. “I agree that racing is not eco-friendly but would like to offer some additional comments,” Münter notes on the other end of the line. “Every time I drive in a race I adopt an acre of rainforest, and I have done so since 2007. This is how I am able to offset the carbon footprint of the fuel for the race car I do not work with any companies that produce fossil fuels (no oil, no coal, no natural gas) on my race cars.” “Companies that make products with ingredients made from animal products or from animal testing are also not allowed under any circumstances. I realise that in doing so I am turning down a lot of potential sponsors here, but I’m not concerned with that. Although I have a degree in biology, it is through racing I reach 75 million people, which is an enormous platform from which I can spread my message of activism. Incidentally it’s been since February 2015 at Daytona since I was in a race. In that race I had severe carbon monoxide poisoning. Carbon monoxide is a silent killer. This incident made me more than aware that electric vehicles are in our future. It was in that sense a true wake up call!”

CES 2016 SURFING ON THE INTERNET OF THINGS Every year, technology fans and professionals look forward to the CES. The “Consumer Electronics Show” in Las Vegas shows us the world of tomorrow and, for more than 3800 companies – a large portion of them from the electronics world –, it has been the ultimate event to introduce their products and services. From drones and new IoT applications to self-driving cars with VR technology, the world keeps getting “smarter”. TEXT: WIM VANDER HAEGEN

ALL-PERVASIVE TECHNOLOGY

26

True to tradition, CES 2016 presented a wave of new products and technologies that will make the world even more interactive and life even more enjoyable and smarter. When the doors closed at the end of the exhibition, the organisers had counted 170,000 visitors (50,000 of them foreigners), who want to know today what is coming tomorrow. “At CES 2016, everyone could see with their own eyes that technology in 2016 is about much more than products and services,” Gary Shapiro, president and CEO of the organising Consumer Technology Association (CTA) says, looking back on the event with satisfaction. “It’s about improving our world and giving hope for the future. CES is the best platform to exchange ideas and to brainstorm. Partnerships are created between traditional (high) tech companies and other players and new business models are developed here. Today, technology touches every facet of our lives. Not only the way in which we work, eat and sleep; technology also keeps our roads safe, is everywhere in our homes and is even used to treat or prevent illnesses.”

ANYTHING FOR CONNECTIVITY CES is also the platform where not only established values, but also young companies – the organisation recorded no less than 500 “startups” – make their appearance. Particularly in the popular Eureka Park they impressed the visitor with inventive machines, gadgets, apps and innovative software, most of them with a view of “connectivity”. Today we already have so many things that are connected to each other and exchange data, including via the internet, and in the future that is only going to keep getting bigger, faster and better. Some of this is playing out in the automotive world with (especially) unmanned systems, but also in the “wearables”, robotica and 3D-printing sectors. David Hagan, CEO van Boingo Wireless, summarised it like this “At CES we saw devices and technologies that are not only connected to the internet but that also communicate with each other more and more.”

SURFING ON THE IOT But what are those trends? It is striking that there is a lot of innovation in what we used to call “dumb objects”, but thanks to the Internet of Things (IoT) and virtual reality, systems are suddenly becoming smart products. The IoT was a playing field for visionary minds for a long time, but it is now really becoming usable. The technology is based on the connectivity between everyday objects to each other and to applications. By adding a computer and connectivity, the devices generate useful data and are able to function without human intervention. Now that big names like Intel, Samsung and many others have gotten behind the idea of IoT sharing, the components are getting stronger and cheaper. The Intel Curie, a computer the size of a button, will be

integrated into a chip that is going to cost less than $10. Cypress is bringing processors that process the input from the sensors and that can work anywhere, without batteries. Kinesthetic energy, thermal force or sun energy ensure that everything keeps running and – very importantly - that the constant replacement of billions of batteries will become a thing of the past. The smart solutions work better if they are also connected. Panasonic introduced the flexible software platform ORA at the exhibition. The company calculated that the average American household has more than 100 end points that can be connected to the internet. ORA enables the integration of all this, with a view of “smart living”. Samsung also indicated it already had over 200 applications in its SmartThings platform. Nearly a quarter of the 3,800 exhibitors claimed to have IoT products.

SMART WASHING MACHINES The Internet of Things is a gigantic ecosystem, where not only humans but machines provide services. Standards still need to be developed to ensure it all runs smoothly, but that is just a matter of time. It is clear that there is going to be a cost attached to it, but we have to be prepared to pay for things that we are too lazy to do ourselves. The applications keep getting better and smarter. The Samsung Family Hub Refrigerator, for example, has a calendar that can be updated via mobile app and works with three cameras, which show the content of the fridge. With one glance at your smartphone, you know what to buy at the store and what you don’t need. Or you can just order what you need with the MasterCard app and pick up your order when it’s convenient for you. Marathon Laundry showed a side-loading machine that combines washing and drying in one cycle and that also has an internet connection. Samsung launched AddWash, which you can use to add

FUTURISTIC CONCEPTS

forgotten clothing to the wash, even after the program has started. LG has a washing machine with an automatic dispenser, which calculates exactly how much laundry detergent you need. Also from LG: a refrigerator door that becomes transparent when you tap on it. In one glance you can see what is in the fridge without wasting any cold air. The LG Styler can steam and shake out shirts to make wrinkles disappear.

ULTRA-THIN TV TVs evolve along with the times too, of course. There are not only more and more 4K (Ultra HD) and UHD (Ultra HD Premium) TVs, but also TVs with 8K and HDR (High Dynamic Range) screens now. There is also a strong presence of (big) TVs with curved screens. But the most striking introduction at CES was the OLED TV by LG, which is barely 2.5 mm thick. With the LG 77”-4K flexible OLED TV, the viewer can even adjust the curve to the number of people watching or the images being viewed. (Image: LG Electronics) Samsung tried to make a distinction with the “quantum dot” technology, which guarantees better color images.

SMARTPHONE TREADS WATER The smartphone industry did not make much of a splash at CES. Perhaps the manufacturers are waiting until the Mobile World Congress to present new innovations, but the expectations there are also fairly low. We will have access to a package of multi-networks and multi-SIM smartphones and devices with multi-functional connectors for USB Type-C, which will provide faster data transfers (10 Gb per second). But none of it is very spectacular. Most of the attention went to the Lenovo smartphone with Google’s Project Tango, which has several cameras and sensors that can scan the area around the user and create a 3D image of the space.

Faraday Future pictures everything just a little bigger. The producer of electric cars, located in California, revealed the FFZERO1, a high performance concept car with no less than 1000 hp, a 0-100 time of three seconds and a top speed of over 300 km/hr on CES. Note: these are not proven figures; the car is still in the concept phase... Volkswagen added its part with the BUDD-e concept, whose interior design is an ode to the Microbus from the sixties. BUDD-e is a zero-emission van, equipped with the brand new Modular Electric Platform.

RETRO IS COOL Now that the so-called baby boomers (born in the period after WWII up to the sixties) are getting older, the retro trend is increasing. Polaroid, Sony and Panasonic have come out with classic (vinyl) record players. Panasonic re-launched the Technics brand a few years ago and showed the new SL-1200 at CES. Sony brought the PS-HX500 record player, which allows you to rip albums to Hi-Res Audio files. Polaroid also has a retro-looking record player that can do this. Also spotted at the exhibition: nostalgic pinball machines by Stern, apparently the only brand that still makes the old classics of the slot machines.

PASSENGER TRANSPORT Before CES 2016, many people thought drones were old news. But the industry has not been idle and has developed new applications, such as a drone that can find fish under water. A lot of thought has also gone into the design. The Parrot Disco, for example, looks like a flywheel. The drone can stay in the air for up to 45 minutes and reach a speed of up to 89 km/hr. The EHang 184 AVV by the Chinese drone manufacturer Ehang, finally, is the first drone that can transport a person. Eight rotors with a capacity of 106 kW are required to get a 100 kg (person, incl. baggage) into the air. After the passenger has indicated the destination on a map on a tablet or smartphone, the EHang 184 takes over and makes the flight autonomously (our source spoke of max. 23 minutes). The passenger cannot take over manually, so this drone cannot be called a helicopter.

TESLATAXI NOTHING BUT PRAISE FOR THE FIRST ‘TESLATAXI’ IN NORTH AMERICA In Quebec, Canada, at the beginning of 2014, taxi driver Christian Roy started something new: he said goodbye to his Subaru Legacy and opted for a Tesla Model S 85, so that he could take his passengers to their destination in an environmentally-friendly way. Meanwhile, two years have passed and we were curious to find out how he feels about driving an electric car today? TEXT: WIM VANDER HAEGEN – PHOTOS: © CHRISTIAN ROY

SATISFIED CUSTOMERS But there is more than just the cost aspect. “The fact that there are absolutely no vibrations has an enormous effect on the work experience. The traction control, the excellent grip on the road and the great driving comfort in the sometimes very busy traffic in Quebec are unsurpassed. The customers also have good things to say about their experience with my Tesla; about the incredibly smooth ride, but also and especially about the lack of noise. Plus, there is also the screen; by now I think I can call it the ‘famous screen’, and, of course, the environmental aspect is quite important to many people, particularly younger people.”

JUST ONCE AND... ADDICTED

FINANCIAL BENEFITS From the first words that Christian says to us from his living/work place we can already tell his enthusiasm has not diminished since two years ago. “I get to call myself the very first owner of a TeslaTaxi in North America. I picked a basic model S 85 2014 without options, except for the double charger. I made the decision to switch from a regular car to the electric Tesla, after I saw the First TeslaTaxi in the world on Instagram, in October of 2013. The very first taxi driver is Trond Gustav Sømme from Oslo, who had made the switch in September of that year. I had never thought that a Tesla would be financially feasible as a taxi, but after carefully calculating the electricity costs combined with the maintenance-free aspect, I came to the conclusion that the car pretty much ends up paying for itself. The eight-year warranty on the ‘drive unit’ with unlimited mileage is worth the price of the car.”

Tesla is not that well-known in Quebec, Christian has to admit. “Only maybe a quarter of my customers have ever even heard of the car and many of them think it’s a hybrid! I’m guessing there are about 100 Teslas driving around the Quebec City²²²² district, which has a population of just under a million. It goes without saying that a TeslaTaxi really stands out here. One thing I know though is that everyone who’s ever had a ride in a Tesla immediately wants one. Just riding in one once is addicting. My customers express a lot of admiration for the car.”

THE PERFECT (TAXI) CHOICE Christian charges the batteries at home, like most owners of electric cars in Canada do. “I generally get about 300 km from one charge in the summer and about 200 km when we have extreme temperatures in the winter. When it’s cold I have to spend extra energy on heating the car.” Does our Tesla Taxi driver think others will follow suit? “I certainly hope so! And not just ‘regular’ people, but Tesla is also a perfect choice for taxi drivers. My next car, even though I won’t be getting it for a while yet, will be a dual engine Tesla; I already know that.”

HARDLY ANY EXPENSES Christian bought the car in February of 2014 and has put over 130,000 km on it by now. “By the end of the warranty, my car will have done 520,000 km, without any expenses for the engine, differential or transmission. For the owner of a taxi that is undoubtedly a dream car! The other expenses are also minimal. A hundred dollars for a link kit, including installation, a set of windshield wipers, one set of new brake pads and two sets of tires a year; one pair of summer tires and one pair of winter tires and that’s all I’ve spent on it in the past two years.”

TESLA MODEL X FIRST IMPRESSIONS The Tesla Model X received its European premiere at the Geneva Motor Show on 1 March. The sales success of the best equipped SUV with the fastest acceleration started in 2012, and by August 2015 more than 30,000 had been reserved. Last year, 507 of these were produced and 208 delivered to customers. If you want to become an owner of the sportiest all-rounder, you will, above all, need a great deal of patience: the delivery time is currently in excess of three years. EUROPE AWAITS Many of those attending the presentation in Switzerland were impatiently waiting for their Model X. For example, Jean Roustan had already ordered his Signature Model X in September 2013. That is the full option version. “I love big sedans and SUVs, and for a long time I had been interested in the technology of Tesla, that builds cars with superb design, sporty performance, and great autonomy. I bought a model S in 2013, and when that was delivered I immediately ordered my Model X. That was intended to replace my Audi Q7 in 2015. But because delivery took so long, I bought another Q7. I ordered a Tesla P90DL. The ‘L’ in the model number stands for Ludicrous Mode, which enables the car to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds.”

Kurt Schär has also been waiting several years for his Model X. As a fan of electric drives he set up the company Biketec in 2001, which produces the FLYER E-Bikes. Now he rents out electric bicycles via several companies (www.herzoute.ch). In the past he had hybrid cars such as the Toyota Prius and the Volkswagen Touareg Hybrid, and his wife has been driving an electric Mitsubishi i-MiEV for five years. He ordered his Model X in October 2014. “I chose Tesla because the manufacturer introduces innovations in an old industry. Moreover, electric engines are very efficient and require little maintenance. I chose the Model X because I was looking for an electric SUV with plenty of seating, that can also pull a trailer. My choice fell on a pearl-white 90D with seating for six, a black leather interior, 20-inch wheels, and all available options.”

DRIVING IN NEW YORK CITY In the United States, the first Model X’s have already been delivered to their new owners. One of them is Randy Faust. In November 2012 he put down $5000 for a place on the waiting list, and in early February 2016 he was one of the first New Yorkers who could take their place behind the wheel of their own Model X. “My Model X was well worth the long wait. I am particularly impressed by the autopilot function, which, in certain circumstances, makes this Tesla a self-driving car. Starting from rest, braking and stopping, changing lanes safely, and taking bends, are all handled autonomously. I have to brake only for traffic lights and when coming up to a junction. I also had my car equipped with Ludicrous Mode. This option costs $10,000, but for that amount I have a car with a lightning quick getaway. Even if you press the accelerator only a quarter of the way down, the acceleration pushes you hard against the seatback.”

What reasons led you to race in Formula E in 2014?

There is more and more talk about Formula E. For you, what is it that makes it attractive in relation to F1? Jérôme D’Ambrosio: “It is a competition which differentiates radically from F1, the only common point being that it is a car race. The technology involved is also completely new and it is the first time that there is a 100% electric Championship. But the most important point is the fact that all the new developments on these race cars can actually be transposed onto the cars of Mr Average i.e. the general public, which is unfortunately no longer the case for F1. In this sense, Formula E constitutes a true R&D platform”

“After three exceptional years in F1, I had to make a choice. F1 is a difficult world, dictated by many interests and not always in tune for example with young people aged 18 to 25 years who are no longer interested in 1,000 hp cars which burn crazy energy. Against that, being a performer in Formula E makes more sense because you know that the technologies that are developed will serve everyone. In addition, the races are organised in the city centre, thus strengthening proximity with the public - which is in fact the reason for their success - and highlighting awareness of the problem of pollution and of sustainable transport in the large cities organising the races such as London, Moscow, Buenos Aires, Paris and soon, perhaps, Brussels.”

On a personal note, what are your ambitions this year? “To finish in the top 3. The team has the means and we have had a good start to the season at the level of performance, even if that does not always materialise when it comes down to results. I am currently in overall 5th place after 4 rounds and 7 rounds remain.”

If everything goes well, Belgium should soon have its ePrix on the Heysel plateau in Brussels. Do you think that the public is ready to embrace this type of event? “Certainly, as is also demonstrated by the fact that all the races have virtually sold-out. Just like Paris and London, Brussels is a city that is concerned about pollution, sustainable transport and new green and sustainable technologies. In addition, it is the capital of Europe, so that it also has a role to play in giving example. I think, and above all, really hope that Brussels will have its ePrix in 2017,” concludes Jérôme D’Ambrosio.

YPSELON GT GREEN TECH AIRCRAFT ANNOUNCES THE LAUNCH OF THE YPSELON GT ELECTRIC AIRCRAFT PROJECT Aviation start-up company Green Tech Aircraft is excited to announce the launch of its progressive electric aircraft project, Ypselon GT. This revolutionary project will soon unite high performance and sustainability. The concept of the electric aircraft was officially presented at Aero Expo 2015 in Friedrichshafen, Germany, from 15th – 18th April.

Green Tech Aircraft believes that the Ypselon GT will enable it to offer solutions for most of the major challenges that General Aviation aircraft owners and pilots are facing today, a significant part of them being a major reduction in operating costs. “Charging Ypselon GT battery packs on the electricity grid will cost between 5 and 8 euro per flight hour. If one has solar panels available, it can even be free,” says GTA’s Founder and Managing Director, David De Ridder. “This is unprecedented among the high performance aircraft which are currently available on the market,” he adds. “In addition, maintenance costs for your Ypselon GT will mostly be limited to consumables such as tyres and brakes, since the electric propulsion system is virtually free from maintenance. An optional trailer and easy assembly/disassembly of the aircraft – by one person – will allow for increased operating, handling and storage flexibility.” Ypselon GT is a high performance all electric two-seater in tandem configuration, packed with state-of-the-art safety features. Capable of carrying a 220 kg (484 lbs) payload, including occupants and baggage, the aircraft is expected to cruise at speeds of up to 320 km/h (200 mph). A first generation aircraft – with an estimated and respectable range of about 500 km (300 miles) – is designed to accept future battery pack upgrades, which will further improve the range. De Ridder concludes: “Ypselon GT offers high overall added value for the owner and pilot. Yet the total cost of ownership is significantly reduced. It’s all about a different flying and ownership experience.”

MODEL 3 THE UNVEILING OF MODEL 3 ‘ACCELERATING SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORT’ After much waiting and high expectations and even an encounter with Elon Musk visiting Tesla Stores nearby in Los Angeles, before the big announcement, Model 3 was unveiled last March 31st. The unveiling, part one as Elon Musk said, took place in Los Angeles, in front of an crowd already conquered by Model 3 as many of us preordered without even seeing it! The show that was also broadcasted online, lasted for approximately half an hour, from 8:30 PST to 9:00PST, 5:30 CET – 6:00CET. TEXT: MARTIN GILLET – PHOTOS: TESLA MOTORS PRESS RELEASE

Tesla Motors CEO first thanked all Model S and X owners ‘who made this possible’ as their acquisition(s) made the happening of Model 3 a reality. Musk also highlighted the current network for charging, both destinations chargers and Super Chargers that will be doubled very soon to meet the demand. The analysts predicted, in their most optimistic figures, approximately 100000 preorders … Facts revealed that the Model 3 was really much expected and that number was quickly passed the same night Model 3 was unveiled. The Live counter is in fact Elon Musk’s twitter account as on 276 000 (!!) sales in 36 hours ($10 billion in future revenues) for Model 3 were reported! Belgian Television station RTL reported after asking Tesla Motors over 250 Belgians which is probably not accurate given the social media stream we have seen with all new reservation holders showing off their reservation number. During the unveiling, the first impression is the stunning front look of the Model 3 that looks like a Porsche Panamera. In the cars presented, a wide glass roof was also part of the overall design. Inside the Model 3, the dashboard seems to be gone, like the cars we see in SciFi shows. The console is now a large tablet, attached to the car with usual functionalities: entertainment and navigation system. Central armrests are also featured. The steering wheel looked very handy too. Quoting Elon Musk ‘Wait until you see the real steering controls and systems, it feels like a spaceship.’

Can easily fit two child seats, three if you buy slim seats. • Model 3 will be RWD with dual motor AWD optional. • Like in Model S, Model 3 has a functional Frunk and Trunk. • Options will be provided like optional tow hitch. • Retail prices is circa 35000 USD (32000 EUR without tax) (including all safety features and Auto Pilot enabled, excluding options, to be announced). • First Deliveries will be USA then Europe, then other countries. Estimated for US deliveries in 2017. • Orders can still be placed by depositing 1000 EUR or equivalent. We congratulate all of you, current owners who went the extra mile and preordered one or two Model 3. We welcome also all new comers to the ‘extended EV family’. More information can be found on Tesla’s website www.teslamotors.com/model3 We’ll come back in our next edition with drivers first test drives and testimonials. We are all looking forward to the part 2 that is coming up next. Probably full of insights and surprises!

We congratulate all of you, current owners who went the extra mile and preorder one or two Model 3. We welcome also all new comers to the ‘extended EV family’.

Tesla Motors logo is now on the hood, like it was in the first days, on the Roadster. The rims set on the cars were reinforcing the stylish sport attitude. Peers engaged on social media with Elon Musk to make sure they would make it to production. After this short but successful first encounter on stage, peers onsite were invited for Test Drives where, unlike the unveiling of Model X, we could see directly live feed through social media, featuring the Model 3 in action. No, these cars are not just mockups! More fortunate peers had the pleasure to be welcomed by no less than Jeffrey Brian “JB” Straubel, Tesla Motors Chief Technical Officer!

FINANCIAL INCENTIVES AND TAX RELIEF IN FLANDERS FINANCIAL SUPPORT FOR PRIVATE INDIVIDUALS (IN PARTICULAR) Europe wants more environmentally friendly energy and fuel for vehicles, and thus also more vehicles running on these fuels. Therefore, all member states must encourage the sale of such vehicles and the expansion of the refuelling infrastructure. In Belgium the three regions have each chosen a different approach, and, at present, it is mainly private individuals in Flanders who benefit from financial and tax advantages when purchasing a Tesla.

TEXT: JAN VAN GEEL – PHOTOS: TESLA

Every vehicle has an impact on the environment. In the first place through its emissions, but also through the production of the fuel and of the vehicle itself. That is why, at the end of 2014, Europe formulated the Clean Power for Transport guideline. This relates to vehicles fuelled by electricity, natural gas, or hydrogen, particularly because these can contribute to better air quality, lower CO2 emissions, and less noise. Starting in 2016, the Flemish Government wants to contribute to a definitive breakthrough of these vehicles and sources of energy. It will do this through financial incentives and tax relief

ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY CARS The Flemish government distinguishes two groups of environmentally friendly cars, zero emission cars and hybrid cars. Teslas are classed as zero emission cars because, as Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs), they emit no damaging substances when in use. Cars with a fuel cell that converts hydrogen into electricity (Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles of FCEVs) also belong in this group. The second group consists of hybrid cars. These are vehicles with at least two energy converters and two built-in energy storage systems. These will not receive any financial incentives, but, until 2021, will benefit from tax relief.

FINANCIAL INCENTIVES Until 2020 the Flemish Government will give a financial incentive to private individuals who purchase a Tesla. In 2016 the purchaser will receive the full incentive amount. Thereafter the maximum incentive amount will be reduced each year and cease in 2020. Since the cheapest Tesla costs more than € 61,000, all models of this make will receive the lowest financial incentive. There is a maximum budget of €5 million per year. If that budget threatens to run out, the amount of the incentive can be reduced earlier. If more than 25% of the budget made available for a year has been applied for by March 1, or 50% by May 1, or 75% by August 1, the Minister can decide to reduce the incentive amount for future requests in the current year. So anyone who wants to take full advantage of this incentive, should sign the order for their new Tesla today. Developments around applications for incentive payments for zero emission vehicles can be followed at www.energiesparen.be/opvolging-premie-zero-emissievoertuigen.

TABLE 2: CONDITIONS FOR ZERO EMISSION INCENTIVE PAYMENTS • The incentive is available only for private individuals (natural persons) and the self-employed (one-man businesses). So the incentive does not apply to lease cars or company cars. • The purchaser must keep the car for at least three years. • The self-employed (one-man businesses) can receive the incentive on condition that a vehicle is not purchased by a corporate personality (a company). If a car is transferred to or brought into a company within the three years of first being put into use, the incentive amount must be paid back. • Every purchaser is limited to a maximum of one incentive payment. • The new car must have been ordered on or after 01.01.2016. • The car must be registered in the Flanders region. • The purchaser must register his order online within a month of placing the order. The application procedure is to be found at www.energiesparen.be/ZEV/aanvraagprocedure • The purchaser must send the papers required in support of the application to the Vlaams Energieagentschap (Flemish Energy Agency) within 12 months of the date on the purchase order and within three months of the first registration of the vehicle.

For further information on the zero emission incentive see milieuvriendelijkevoertuigen.be/zero-emissiepremie and www.vlaanderen.be/nl/mobiliteit-en-openbare-werken/voertuigen/ premie-voor-nieuwe-elektrische-wagen-wagen-op-waterstof 56

TAX RELIEF In Flanders, Teslas are also given tax relief on the “belasting op inverkeerstelling” (BIV - tax on a new car) and on the annual road tax (VKB). This tax relief is of unlimited duration for vehicles owned by both private individuals and companies but not for lease cars. For further information about this tax relief see www.vlaanderen. be/nl/mobiliteit-en-openbare-werken/voertuigen/belasting-op-inverkeerstelling-en-verkeersbelasting-gewijzigd For the forms for applying for or terminating this tax relief see http://belastingen.vlaanderen.be/formulieren-verkeersbelastingen.

NO FINANCIAL STIMULUS FOR THE LEASE MARKET More than 90% of Belgian lease cars are diesels. The success of these vehicles is not only due to their lower consumption and the cheaper fuel, but, above all, to their high second-hand value. At present, there is still great uncertainty about the second-hand value of electric and hybrid cars. This is caused mainly by the advances in technology and the ageing of the battery. Add to that the high prices of the electric cars in particular – even though they are subject to 120% tax relief for companies – and the absence of financial stimuli in the form of incentives and tax relief, and you then understand that an environmentally friendly revolution in the lease car market is not to be expected in the short term.

legislation

The financial incentives and tax relief raise a number of questions that we put to Annemie Turtelboom, Deputy Prime Minister of the Flemish Government, and Flemish Minister of Begroting, Financiën en Energie (Budget, Finance, and Energy).

If the government really wants to reduce the number of diesel cars, why do the tax relief and financial incentives not also apply to lease cars, more than 90% of which are diesels? TURTELBOOM ‘The greening of traffic taxation affects 90% of the vehicle fleet. To expand the greening to the 10% of vehicles held by lease companies, we need an agreement with the other regions. Talks are in progress with, among others, the Walloon Prime Minister Paul Magnette (PS). I count on him sharing our sense of urgency. If you look at the map of fine particle emissions in Belgium, you realise that there is still much to be done. We could have decided to postpone the greening of traffic tax in anticipation of this agreement, but that’s not much help to the man in the street. Meanwhile, the air quality continues to get worse and no steps are being taken to make the car fleet greener.’ ‘That is why we, the Flemish Government, have not delayed, and have started the greening of the traffic taxation for private individuals. As already reported in the press, this greening is a success. The number of diesel cars registered in the first month of 2016 has already fallen substantially. This is true not only for new cars but also for second-hand cars; and the latter fact is very important.’ ‘Lease companies take account of the second-hand value of their cars when calculating their profits. If private consumers increasingly avoid the diesel, in due course the lease companies will also switch to petrol. And, of course, we are not going to wait for this evolution to take place of its own accord. To speed up this greening, it remains important to reach a cooperation agreement with the other regions as quickly as possible.’

Because of the conditions, limitations, and running down of incentives, the action plan seems to be aiming at only a short-term, temporary result rather than at the definitive breakthrough of environmentally friendly cars. Won’t sales fall off again when the stimulus disappears, just as with solar panels? TURTELBOOM ‘The action plan involves more than just fiscal stimuli. It’s also about infrastructure. Via de fiscal stimuli in the financial incentives in particular we want to create a market pull effect. We deliberately set clear limits to the conditions and duration of the zero emission bonus. Over-subsidisation is certainly not the way to initiate change. In fact, in the case of solar panels this damaged the market rather than strengthened it. You must leave growth to market forces. If you over-subsidise you exclude market forces and build up debts. We saw that with solar panels, and, as far as I’m concerned, that’s not to be repeated. On the other hand, the greener traffic taxation does not disturb the market but, for the first time, takes proper account of costs to the climate and environment.’ ‘Besides that, the issue of cost is not the only thing stopping the consumer from buying a green car. There is also what is called range anxiety. This means that as a consumer you must be able to take it for granted that you can refuel or re-charge in good time. Therefore, as the other aspect of the Clean Power for Transport action plan, we are also aiming for 300 CNG filling stations – so about one per municipality – and 5000 extra charging points by 2020. Once the necessary preconditions have been met the door will be wide open for green cars. After all, green cars are by definition more economical, both in terms of fuel and life span.’

it did those of diesel cars: first encourage them to buy a diesel car and then penalise them fiscally?

Who will pay for the incentives and the tax relief? Drivers of diesel and petrol cars? TURTELBOOM ‘We have allocated a fixed amount of €5 million for the incentives. This restriction is necessary, as I said, to prevent over-subsidisation. An unlimited commitment would not be to the advantage of support for green mobility.’ ‘Tax relief is tax relief. In other words, it concerns money that stays with the general public. It is misleading to suggest that when something is free of tax, somebody has to pay for it. Within the greened traffic taxation, it is still your own choice of how much car tax (BIV) and annual road tax (VKB) you want to pay. This depends on how clean or polluting your car is. Nobody is forced to purchase a polluting diesel car. Someone who already had a diesel car before the greening of traffic taxation, doesn’t suddenly have to pay more. The increase in BIV and VKB for polluting cars is not retrospective.’

Is the government going to treat the purchasers of environmentally friendly cars in the same way as

TURTELBOOM ‘The greening of the traffic taxation has penalised nobody fiscally. The new rates apply only to someone who buys another car from 2016 onwards. The consumer is the only one who determines what car to buy and therefore how much tax is payable on it. Nothing changes for anyone who already had a car before 2016. The tax relief will certainly continue until 2020 for CNG cars and hybrid cars, and even longer for electric vehicles and hydrogen cars. If there should be a policy change after 2020, it would also be the case that things would not change immediately for anyone who already has a car. The ban on retrospective taxation also plays a role here.’

Why isn’t the price of diesel increased to discourage the sale of diesel vehicles? TURTELBOOM ‘This is a federal matter over which I have no authority. The Federal Government increased the duty on diesel in November 2015.’

NICOLA TESTA KNOWING HOW TO HEAR AND FOLLOW YOUR DESIRES “Hello Mr Tesla… Oops! Obviously I meant to say Testa!” Thus, in reality could our interview with Nicola Testa, the rising star of the Belgian pop scene, have started. A little slip which assuredly risks becoming ever more frequent with the growing fame of your favourite electric car brand. If he understands and recognises the orthographic and phonetic proximity with the inventor of the alternative racer, Nicola can also not deny a certain filiation with the car brand which, as with his music, combines electric power and electronic genius. Discovery of an engaging composer… TEXT: JACQUES LEGROS – PHOTOS: © ARNAUD LAURENT & © ATHOS BUREZ

Born in Braine l’Alleud of French parents with Italian origins, Nicola Testa – his real name – grew up between the Walloon Brabant region and Brussels. His studies at the Institut des Arts et Diffusion (IAD in Louvain-la-Neuve and at the Kleine Academie in Brussels should have pushed him to take up the acting route, but music finished uppermost. After having carried off the Pure FM radio “Pure Démo” competition and launching his first EP ‘Wanderland’ in 2011, Nicola Testa has just launched the album ‘No More Rainbows’, co-produced by Antoine Gaillet (M83, Julien Doré, etc.), for which he composed lyrics and music for 11 songs.

Nicola, how did you get into music? “Music was always present in my home from childhood and it’s something that developped over the years. My parents listened to a lot of music, ranging from Queen to Pink Floyd. When you are a child, you hear this music in an instinctive way without really asking yourself any questions about it. But that always generated a strong attraction in me for music. As a child, I began to play piano and then, as a teenager, I had several groups where I sang, but I never really found my own place. Although I began to write songs when I was around 18, I only truly began to make music when I finished college, around 25 or 26 years old. There wasn’t really anything that clicked in particular, but I always wanted to follow my own desires.

The way in which things are put into place is more important. In my life, everything is always a question of priorities and cravings. Everything is possible in life, no matter what age you are.”

What are your influences? “I always wanted to do something that belongs to me. As a teen, I liked people like David Bowie, Bjork, Kate Bush or Peter Gabriel who were not, however, of my generation. These artists appealed to me on some level, notably by their diversity. After piano, I came to electronic music via the keyboard. I find it hard to define myself by musical influences, I’m already sufficiently typecast by people. I try instead to find inspiration in what surrounds me, books, films, stories, the lives of other people and above all my own. What interests me, is what doesn’t limit me or keeps me confined in a straitjacket. I didn’t choose this occupation to have myself constrained in any way.”

How would you describe your music? “It’s pop, because I want to make music that is directed at everyone. It’s not that important now that we speak of electro-pop, or synthetic pop, that is, a synthetic and organic mix. It is more important that others define what I do, rather than that I do, as that will make you fall back into some constraints.”

Introduce your new album ‘No More Rainbows’ “This album is the fruit of three years of work. I don’t know if it is because I took the time or if things simply needed the time for it to be made. It was really necessary for me to find the right people. Thus I made a very fortunate acquaintance in the person of Antoine Gaillet (producer of M83, Julien Doré, Talisco, François & The Atlas Mountains, etc.) with whom something very strong happened on the human level. From hearing the first demo, he liked and commented on my voice and always wanted to showcase it, without altering it too much. With, at the end, an album which – reference to the rainbow – makes all the colours of my nuanced world visible.” © ATHOS BUREZ

What inspired the proximity of your name with that of Nikola Tesla or the Tesla car brand? “There has often been a comparison between my name and that of the inventor of the alternative car and this person has always intrigued me a lot. This is someone who has touched me. Such genius dying away as a hermit is tough. It’s thanks to him that we are being enlightened these days and, by extension, that we are making electronic music , or at least electric. As for Tesla cars, I discovered them a few years ago and find them to be quite incredible. I’d like to try one out, it’s just a question of time. These cars are still not very common and remain quite expensive. Besides that, it is less obvious to travel around in a Tesla than in a Twingo – my current car which is very practical, especially in Brussels –, especially when you’re known a bit.”

“I don’t like to project too far into the future. One is clearly disappointed when too many things are planned. I want to find a creative space as I need to write. Various concerts and festivals are under discussion. I’m also preparing production of a new clip, not forgetting a call from abroad…”

“In fact, I will be at the AB this 19 March and the preparation of this show is taking up a lot of my energy. Because I really want to present a unique show there that I will not be able to present elsewhere. It’s more difficult because it is about a special audience coming specifically for you, so a challenge when compared to festivals, for example”, concludes Nicola Tesla. Uh, sorry, Testa!

CORRIDOR IN THE CENTER WING WITH ART DECO ELEMENTS.

No one who enters the heart of Brussels from the Saint Gudula Cathedral can miss the majestic former headquarters of the Algemene Spaar- & Lijfrentekas. HISTORICAL ADDED VALUE FOR INVESTORS AND RESIDENTS

ALFRED CHAMBON, AN INSPIRED ARCHITECT The stately façades along the Wolvengracht in Brussels are part of Belgium’s financial history. The oldest building, on the corner of the Zilverstraat, is a beautiful neo-classical administrative building from 1893. But the undisputable eye-catcher is the center portion from 1948.

Officially, the Chambon site is not a protected monument. Nevertheless, project developer Allfin spared neither cost nor effort to maintain the authentic aspects of the buildings. Marnix Galle, CEO of Allfin, makes it a point of honor.

Inspired by post-war optimism and economic recovery, architect Alfred Chambon created a visionary structure with an open semi-circle. Many elements inside refer to his beloved art deco style. At the street level, an impressive green-copper gateway offers access to the counter hall, whose facade was decorated with a beautiful frieze by the sculptor Oscar Jespers. This complex with iconic allure rightly acquired a place in Brussels’ architectural heritage.

“For us it’s all about the added value, in all aspects,” he explains. “Business-wise it is useful, because we are targeting a cosmopolitan public that greatly appreciates authenticity, whether it is as a permanent resident or a tenant. But we want this project to provide added value to the city of Brussels as well. The complex is situated on a number of interesting routes: culturally between Martelarenplein and Muntplein, commercially between Nieuwstraat and the city

center, functionally in the midst of residences, schools and offices. All those aspects are considered equally in our design. This fits in perfectly with the ambitions of the Brussels city council to upgrade the entire city center. And that synergy with the policy is the best guarantee for the added value for our investors in the long run.

A NEW IMPETUS FOR THE OPERA DISTRICT Allfin commissioned the renowned tandem A2rc Architects and Jaspers-Eyers & Partners to re-design the entire block of houses. This produced a harmonious mix of historical buildings and stylish new constructions with varied purposes. In total, the Chambon site includes 224 apartments, 20,000 m² of office and retail space and a separate building with 135 units for students. The privileged residents of the apartment buildings also get to enjoy two big courtyard gardens, designed by the famous landscape architect Wirtz. In addition, space has been provided for restaurants; the best guarantee for a lively and livable whole. In short, this reconversion project is the best thing that could happen in the area around the Muntplein.

RESIDENTS SERVED HAND AND FOOT Becoming an owner is profitable in every way. What do you have to gain as a resident? That can be summed up in one phrase: quality of life. Living in luxury in the bustling heart of the capital, within walking distance from everything is attractive enough. But the residents of the central section, renamed Romeo & Juliet, are the recipients of the ultimate luxury: the Residential Services. Busy residents can opt for concierge services that cover all possible domestic and practical tasks: grocery shopping, ironing, babysitting, carwash, quick repairs, reservations, booking trips, etc. One phone call or email generally suffices. Customized? You might call it haute couture.

VERSATILE RENTAL SERVICES

Brussels has been and still is the capital of Europe. Together, the European organizations are putting around 40,000 people to work, the Europe-Brussels Liaison Office estimates. But if you take into consideration lobbyists, journalists, lawyers and NGOs, including family members who have joined them from their countries of origin, it adds up to about 100,00 to 120,000 people. That is a whopping one tenth of the Brussels population. That is without forgetting the NAVO, with its 4,000 employees. And countless other organizations, like EuroControl and the United Nations, plus hundreds of multinationals, such as Coca-Cola and Toyota, which have their European headquarters here. In short, there is a large and fast-growing population that has to be housed. And the higher the position, the higher the quality requirements. That is the reason why the better Brussels real estate is so attractive to investors. Especially because the prices of average apartments remain very affordable, compared to cities like Paris, Amsterdam or London, even though they did double in value in the last 10 years. Not many investments can compete with that.

The apartments offer everything exacting residents dream of: central location, historical content, high quality finishing and tasteful furniture. But how will you reach the right tenants? Allfin has the answer: your own rental services, specialized in expats, which covers management from a to z. For you, as owner, everything goes through one contact person. Everything is arranged for you: new tenants are attracted in a timely fashion and carefully screened for solvability. All the questions from tenants are directed at the rental services; not at you, and are handled promptly. This is also an advantage for the residents. Are your ambitions as an investor a bit more modest? The Chambon complex also offers opportunities for viable investments. In this way, the former Spaar- en Lijfrentekas does honor to its name once again. Want to find out more about all facets of the Chambon complex? Visit: www.thechambon.be. INVESTING IN STUDENT FLATS WITH CONFIDENCE Looking for an ideal investment with the ease of a savings account, but with much more return? If so, Brussels Projects is just the solution. The real estate specialist recently began marketing two brand-new projects for student housing in the centre of the capital.

OPPORTUNITY Investing in student flats? That might raise the eyebrows of more than a few investors. But that doesn’t matter when it comes to the well thought-out vision of Brussels Projects. The need for high-quality student flats in the capital is extremely high, if not dire. With close to 90,000 students, Brussels is the largest student town in our country. In contrast with other student towns in Belgium, the supply of student housing is definitely inadequate, at least as far as flats that fulfil the criteria for the universities. Specialists estimate that the shortage amounts to no less than 9,500 student flats. “Today, investing in student flats creates an opportunity for the wise investor,” according to Brussels Projects.

OVER A QUARTER CENTURY OF EXPERIENCE This Brussels real estate specialist is well situated to assess the real estate needs and boasts a wealth of experience. “We started in 1989 with the construction of residential apartments for rental as well as private residences. Since many investors would rather not have to deal with the administrative burden and other hassles, we added rental service in 1992. In the meantime, the number of apartments built by us has grown to 1,850, of which 1,600 or so are being rented.”

The interest in the student market actually came at the request of the universities: “There are plenty of beds in Brussels, but only a limited number satisfy the criteria set forth by educational institutions.”

ULTRA-MODERN ARCHITECTURE Brussels Projects did not just jump in to the project without any consideration. “We first started talking extensively with various study groups and of course with the universities in order to ascertain exactly what comprised a high-quality, acceptable student dormitory. From this process, we learned, among other things, that a garden, a multipurpose room and a communal kitchen for 20 students are among the basic criteria. We even stepped up the criteria to be able to offer modern flats that amply meet the requirements that students today have as far as comforts are concerned. “ “We then started searching for real estate with a great location in the centre of Brussels near the campuses, of course. We opted for high quality, ultra-modern architecture that was youthful, sleek and fresh in style, with an equally high-quality and durable finish work. The flats, some with terraces but all with private bathrooms comprise a green oasis in the city thanks to the beautiful interior garden.”

BROAD TARGET AUDIENCE Now that the building permits are in order, Brussels Project has started marketing the student properties. “It involves around 300 student apartments. The first part should be done around September 2017, and the second part will be ready to rent out in September 2018.” Brussels Projects is targeting a broad target audience. “Whether a person is young or old, or has little or a lot of experience in real estate investing does not matter. We have deliberately opted for a low threshold for entry with or without financing. Investing in a flat starts at €99,500 or from €35,000 for your own share.”

NO WORRIES A professional property manager is something that cannot be underestimated. “An experienced partner makes sure everything is under control. In this case we take our extensive experience with business apartments and apply it to the world of student housing. The owner never has to worry about anything. We find tenants, take inventory of the premises, manage the keys and provide technical assistance, the maintenance of the common areas and make a conscious choice to have a resident caretaker. Wherever the customer lives, they can sleep soundly; the property is professionally managed and the student has only one point of contact.” Just a few weeks following the start of the sale of the first 96 apartments, half have already been sold. “The interest is indeed overwhelming. But that also makes sense! Brussels only has about 12,000

student apartments that meet the criteria recognised by the universities while there are roughly 8 times as many students. There are also a large number of international students here, given the close proximity of NATO, all of the European institutions and the countless multinationals who have their offices or headquarters in Brussels.”

THOUGHTFUL COMBINATION The question remains whether the rental prices are too high, keeping in mind the high-quality furnishings of the flats. “Thanks to our thorough ecological approach with several aspects including more solar energy and rainwater recuperation, we are able to keep the prices lower. That is in fact the answer to a frequently asked question, because a lot of students are on a somewhat limited budget. That is why we also provide different types of flats. We consciously opted for each apartment having its own bathroom. In addition there is a kitchen for each eight students instead of the required twenty. To keep the rental price down for students, we also have flats with two or three bedrooms, which are ideal for living together, for example with a family or college roommates. And of course, everyone can use the common areas as well as the multi-purpose room, study room, fitness centre and the interior garden. In short, our student apartments form a mini-city unto themselves, which also limits the inconveniences for other residents of the neighbourhood considerably. We have given long and careful thought to the concept that positively considers the quality of life of the students.” Info: www.studeopolis.be -  0800 997 33

Wonen in de grootste tuin van ‘t Stad

NIEUW ZUID ANTWERPEN, MIJN STAD, MIJN DORP

PROJECT ZUIDERZICHT

ANTONISSEN ANTONISSEN STANDS FOR REAL ESTATE WITH CLEAR ADDED VALUE Looking for a nice house on the water? A cosy place in the city? Or do you prefer a stylish apartment to grow old in? Antonissen Project Development from Antwerp designs, develops and achieves real estate with added value. All projects have their own character and style, but they are all on the same quality level.

LONG-TERM VISION

KNOWLEDGE OF THE FACTS

Real estate with added value: you’ve come to the right place at Antonissen. And the added value is not just for the owner, the future user or the resident of the building, but also relates to the surroundings and the neighbourhood the building is built in. All projects start with a clearly outlined vision of the real estate, the location and the architectural context. A building is not just plunked down, after all. Good buildings have to offer the same living quality thirty or fifty years from now as they do today. The long-term vision also takes the vicinity into account. And the future. The buildings are intended to still be standing after half a century, as though they were designed along with the other structures.

Antonissen completed its first project in 2009 on the Gedempte Zuiderdokken in Antwerp, but at that time it could already rely on a wealth of experience with real estate in the housing market. The location of the project, which was named Steendok, tells the story right away: the focus is on top locations. Antonissen looks for properties in the best locations or places where the demand is greater than the offer. It started in the home harbour of Antwerp and has now grown to Antwerp and Brussels; in the future it will spread to the most interesting locations all over Belgium as well as abroad. At Antonissen the customer can count on our knowledge of the facts. The best elements from each project are always incorporat-

ed into the next projects. That permanent innovation ensures that Antonissen is consistently building better buildings and always using the materials and following the rules that belong to the top of the architectural world today. The figures also prove the successful approach: so far, Antonissen has built 25,000 m². For 2016, no less than 30,000 m² are ‘under construction’ and building permit applications for another 22,000 m² have been filed with urban planning.

AFTER-SALES SERVICES AND RENTAL Real estate investments demand an attention to several elements. The yield return is not the only key element! What would happen in case of death, for instance? Antonissen’s experts will advise you with regards to the future. We’ll look for the perfect structure for you and your family. And we’ll help you to find reliable tenants or partners for the maintenance of your accommodation(s).

DISTINCTIVE

AND THERE IS (EVEN) MORE...

The business philosophy of Antonissen relies on four powerful pillars that stand out:

Real estate pays off and is a nice alternative in spreading out any investment portfolio. At Antonissen you invest in future-oriented projects with timeless architecture, sustainable materials, an excellent location, and more. With its real estate, Antonissen takes advantage of a double return: in addition to rental income there is also the added value. Investing in real estate is not completely worry-free; everyone knows that. That is why you have to look for reliable tenants and partners for maintenance and you have to present your apartment at its best when you want to sell it later. Do you need further guidance around fiscal questions? Do you have technical questions about loans or inheritance tax? You can rely on Antonissen’s specialists to help you with all of these.

• Sustainable: buildings have a big impact on the planet. That is why we always pay attention to sustainable materials and raw materials for our building projects that will survive several generations. For every project, an attractive green patch is provided, where possible, in the form of a common court yard with a water feature. • Decisive: at Antonissen we follow up on what we say and always keep our promises. And we do this with a lot of enthusiasm and unbridled dedication. • Price/Quality: smart designing means that every centimetre of the house is used optimally. No space is wasted anywhere. The result? The customer gets much more real estate for the same price. • Innovative: Antonissen never designs the same project twice. Because permanent innovation contributes to increasingly better results.

ENDURANCE AND EFFICIENCY The Serengeti-24 Hours of Le Mans Limited Edition showcases the best of Serengeti’s technologies, with designs inspired by the spirit of the race known as the ‘Grand Prix of Endurance and Efficiency’. Since 1923, Le Mans has been putting man and machine to the test of covering nearly 5,000 kilometres in 24 hours. The circuit combines both road and race track, with weather conditions ranging from searing heat to pouring rain. Serengeti’s mission is to help drivers meet these challenges, with performance and comfort. Serengeti has been designing the finest driving lenses on the market since 1982, but the DNA of Serengeti and its associated companies dates back over a century in developing optical technologies. Serengeti was the pioneer of revolutionary Photochromic eyewear, where lenses lighten and darken in UV light, as well as Spectral Control, which optimises visual clarity and definition by filtering out the atmospheric haze known as blue light. Seregenti is unique in combining these technologies, together with Polarisation to block solar glare, so that lenses rapidly adapt to perform in any environmental condition. Damaging eye fatigue and stress are minimised, allowing the driver to effortlessly focus on every detail on the road.

LIMITED EDITION The Serengeti-24 Hours of Le Mans collection comprises 6 models, each available with a choice of up to four lens colours, such as the Polarized 555nm Blue and Polarized Drivers Gold. The Treviso and Panarea models, with their light-weight metal frames and mineral lenses, are classically elegant references in aviator-style driving sunglasses. Four sports-inspired models have been created using ultra-light weight nylon-injected sculpted frames with trivex lenses

- which use NXT® technology adapted for fighter jets. The Nuvola features a modern rimless design, while the Maestrale’s aerodynamic look, with its wide field of protection, reflects the fashions found at the Le Mans track. The ergonomic 4500 and 13,629 models have smooth racing contours, sculpted to fit the face. All are discretely engraved with Serengeti and Le Mans logos, while the temples feature Le Mans-inspired designs, such as chequered-flags.

RACING DRIVERS AND PILOTS The global product and marketing development team behind Serengeti are Vanessa Rebelo, with her experience in luxury goods gathered from brands such as Fred, and Dani La Gace, director of Product and Marketing, who brings over 20 years’ of expertise in lens technologies and eyewear to the table. “Our goal is to blend the best in design and optical engineering to craft products ready for performance, endurance, action and comfort” says Dani La Gace. “We pay great attention to design detail, always developed with the protection and comfort of the customer in mind. As such, we have grown a loyal following of clients who want to experience the best, including professional racing drivers and pilots. In fact our strength is our high rate of loyal customers who tell us that once they wear Serengeti sunglasses they don’t want to change!” Having ‘road-tested’ Seregenti eyewear, we can only agree that they transform the driving experience. The models are lightweight enough to forget that you are wearing them and whether in dazzling winter sun or driving through covered areas, they effortlessly adapt to the environment.
