For this sixth edition, we have gathered more than interesting topics. We had met Roborace during the ePrix in Berlin, we thought it was be time for us to discover that automation means to them as we spotted full automated EV fast car on track! As you have heard, your Club has been officially appointed Tesla Owners Club for Belgium. We have met in Fremont, at the Mothership in June the other Clubs. We wanted to debrief you on this special moment. As we were in town, we were also fortunate to spot quite a few Model 3, let’s review the pictures and the latest facts regarding the Model 3. We wanted also to review some of the current offers regarding EV as many of us are looking for a second EV family cars. Then we will review Jerôme D’Ambrosio interview held at the Berlin ePrix. Many of us are also shareholders and following the financials news, we wanted to have some external insights from the market. We also have a great story with our Austrian friends. Last but not least, just like you, we are keeping an eye on the Smart City concepts and the next trends regarding urban furnitures. Wouldn’t be nice to be able to charge anywhere as long as there is public lighting? We look forward to your impressions, stories, article ideas and feedback as well as welcoming you during our monthly events. Keep up the conversations online through social media, ‘share the Love’ using hashtag #TeslaClubBE Best pictures are featured in our Instagram feed. CHAMPAGNE TOUR AUGUST 2017 During the weekend of August 18th-20th we had a great journey, headed for a Champagne tour (don’t drink and drive). Owners gathered for a scenic drive along with pit stops to enjoy not only the scenery (with fantastic weather) but also tasteful food and drinks. After visiting the famous caves, onsite shopping was also secured in order to stock delightful beverages for the year end parties. The tour whereabouts made the journey based on the Supercharged network and the destination chargers, proving once more that eMobility is not a myth. We look forward to the next edition. ASSISTENTIEWONINGEN IN OOSTDUINKERKE.

JUNE 2017 All Superchargers are being converted to solar/battery power. Electrek reported that Tesla has been talking about adding solar arrays and batteries to its Supercharger stations ever since announcing the fast-charging network in 2012. But only half a dozen stations or so out of the over 800 stations ended up getting a solar array. CEO Elon Musk said that they plan to deploy more battery and solar systems with the upcoming ‘Version 3’ of the Supercharger, but now he went a step further and claimed that “almost all Superchargers will disconnect from the electricity grid.” “All Superchargers are being converted to solar/battery power. Over time, almost all will disconnect from the electricity grid.” Musk wrote on twitter. A FRESH START: TESLA OWNERS CLUB LEADERS SUMMIT TEXT: MARTIN GILLET

TESLA OWNERS CLUB BELGIUM IS SANCTIONED AS OFFICIAL CLUB IN BELGIUM Since its creation, Tesla Owners Club Belgium has been striving to nurture the local Tesla Community of enthusiasts, Owners, reservation holders, shareholders and brand Ambassadors. We are driven by passion and do more than our utmost to support and echo Tesla’s mission statement towards a greener sustainable mobility. Thanks to the Leadership of its Board and the amazing peers, we have already achieved so much throughout the years. Tesla Owners Club Belgium structure is a non-profit Organisation, meaning that none of the journey is possible without the energy of the Community and the Club’s members.
Although totally independent from Tesla and not affiliated, in June 2017 we were very pleased to be officially sanctioned as the Official Tesla Owners Club Belgium. We are very thankful and look forward to an ongoing relationship with Tesla. No doubt this official recognition also provides “added value” to all of our Members as, for example, we can now organise ‘Official Club House’. Throughout the World, the clubs that are officially sanctioned by Tesla can be easily recognised. These Clubs meet strict requirements and guidelines in order to nurture a mutual healthy relationship between all parties. The consolidation of all these Clubs is the ‘Tesla Owners Global’ group.

THE LOCATION The meeting was hosted at Tesla’s Fremont Factory, where a courtesy meeting room was provided. Visiting Fremont is always a treat, but each visit is amazing as we see all the minor and major changes the factory is always going through. We stayed at the conveniently located hotel across from the factory (which of course has EV Tesla charging stations).

THE OBJECTIVES The objectives were quite simple - to discuss and engage on how can Tesla and our Club can work together, as we embrace the journey towards more sustainable mobility.
THE INVITATION We were thrilled to be invited to the Tesla Owners Club Leaders Summit. The delegation from the Belgian Owners Club consisted of the Club President, Byron, our Event Manager Kelly and myself as VP of Global Communications. It is important to know that the delegation financed the trip with its own time and expenses, as the Club is a non-profit Organization. We are driven by passion and we trust Tesla’s vision towards a more sustainable future. We were very pleased to represent our peers and we thank you for your trust. We wanted to debrief you on this fresh start, as it does matter. We shall indeed nurture the community’s growth, but in the meantime, get to know each other and learn from each other.
In parallel, the meeting gave the opportunity to Club representatives to meet face to face and get acquainted with Tesla’s team and network. Learning was another crucial take away from this Summit, as we all have ‘best practices’ and ‘lessons learned’ to share. Your favorite magazine ‘Supercharged’ is part of this story and one of the amazing achievements from the team that we wanted to share during the Summit.
REGISTRATION AND WELCOME RECEPTION On June 1st, after an uneventful flight from Europe and a smooth transfer to our hotel located in Fremont across from the Tesla Factory, we checked-in. We received a warm welcome, along with our passes and some goodies. By the time we settled in, it was already time to head down to the welcome reception. Affter all the world is going through right now and being thousands of kilometers from our home turf, we still didn’t feel like strangers at all. On the contrary, the Tesla Community really lives up to its reputation of looking

after the ‘extended family’. It was very nice to meet all the Summit guests and for many, to put a name to a social media avatar. Our host Renee Swenson and the team took stage to kick off the summit. A delightful walking dinner was served in parallel. After a reminder of the housekeeping rules, we began the introduction and reviewed the agenda, followed by a toast to a successful Summit. Gamification was also included, as trivia was set on every table to identify where Tesla pictures were taken. This was a nice icebreaker!
THE AGENDA FRIDAY JUNE 2ND This meetup, the first of its kind, gathered Clubs mainly from USA but also from other parts of the world. Most of the content was under ‘Non Disclosure Agreement’ but we wanted to debrief you about our trip and illustrate the positive outcome of the meeting with Tesla. The Global list of clubs is growing as we speak. After a warm welcome from Renee Swenson, all leaders introduced the Clubs they were representing. We introduced your proactive Belgian Club and made sure that we left a positive impression by providing Belgian sweets to the audience as an icebreaker.
Tesla to reach its objectives. Fruitful open discussions on multiple topics were exchange in a cheerful atmosphere. Following these introductions, as we were all dispersed among different tables, we kicked off sessions on different topics such as ‘How our Club is structured’, and ‘What do we do?’ etc. This exchange was very successful as not only it allowed us to network, but it also multiplied the different answers we could offer. The outcome of these sessions were added to the Whiteboard so that they could be picked up later on for our debriefing. Should you wish to know more, get involved and get in touch with our Club representatives. We would love to hear from you and be keen to add your ‘ten cents’ to the Club’s journey.
We were then introduced to Tesla’s Vice President for North America, who took to the stage. He insisted that Community is part of Tesla’s DNA and highlighted that Elon’s vision was ‘keeping them busy’ (cheerful audience smiling). We then had the pleasure of meeting the Director of Marketing, who reminded us of where Tesla is coming from and how “everyday Tesla is fighting an uphill battle” to achieve its goals. It was a great privilege to not only sit in the room but also to engage with the ‘agents of change’ that give the daily strength and directions for

FACTORY TOUR

Out of their (over)busy schedule - we were very close to Model 3 event and of course in the ongoing loop of Model 3 production settings and tests - Tesla took the time to host a factory tour for our group. It was much appreciated, as many of us were returning visitors. It is always interesting and amazing to see how the factory develops over the months and years. If you have visited the factory or if you plan to do so, we respect the house rules of not disclosing ‘what’s cooking inside’. We had a great tour, empowered by our more than enthusiastic guide who shared many insights and funny anecdotes.
THE OUTCOME AND NEXT STEPS Throughout the day - that of course went way too fast and we would have like to have frozen the time - we succeeded in touching base and realigning with ‘a fresh start’. It was very nice to see Tesla taking time with the Clubs in order to move forward as the company keeps growing. The debriefing was collected and is being reviewed. Regular scheduled calls are taking place to follow up. The next Summit face to face is likely to be held in the second semester of 2018. We ended the day on a delightful note, as Tesla had invited food trucks to their backyard. As we enjoyed dinner and had casual debriefing and further networking; the ‘icing on the cake’ for dessert was an impromptu visit to the Alpha Model 3, in fact next door! Telling you that we had a blast is not an understatement!
SPECIAL THANKS We would like to thank all parties involved at Tesla, namely: Graham, Eliza, Anjali, William, Ian, Sarah and all Executives who took the time to meet and engage with the group. A big shoutout as well for the invitation and the organization to Renee Swenson and team, namely Larry, John, Liz, Nick, Andy, Bonnie, Omar, Tiz and all participants who made the trip on their own time and expenses. We would like to express our gratitude for your dedication and commitment in order to make this event take place, as we do know that it’s a lot of work. We cherish the idea of organising perhaps a ‘European pitstop’ in the coming years.

ROBORACE LEADING THE DRIVERLESS REVOLUTION IN MOTOR RACING

Roborace is writing a new chapter in motorsport, developing driverless electrically-powered race cars for a series of championships like no other. During this season’s Formula E series, spectators were able to see the autonomous cars and watch them perform on track for the first time.

A DRIVERLESS CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES The official purpose of the event was “Build a healthy, thriving owners club program resulting in a mutually beneficial relationship. Network and share best practices with Club presidents and Tesla team.” The ambition of Roborace is to organise a fully autonomous championship in parallel with the Formula E championships. The Roboraces will take place prior to each ePrix race, using the same circuits in major cities across the world. Ten teams, each with two driverless cars, will compete in one-hour races over the full championship season. One of these ten teams is expected to be a “Crowd Sourced Community” team, backed by private investors and open to Artificial Intelligence developers from across the globe. All the teams will operate the same Robocars, but controlled by their own specially developed Artificial Intelligence technologies to optimise performance.
DEVELOPMENT AND DESIGN Development of the Robocar began in 2016 with DevBot, the prototype car that consists of the same battery, motor and electronics as the Robocar, but within the chassis of a LMP3 Ginetta. The other main difference between the prototype and the Robocar, is that the DevBot also has a cockpit, to permit human drivers for testing purposes.

The Robocar’s futuristic design is the brainchild of Daniel Simon, who has also created vehicles for iconic sci-fi movies such as Tron Legacy and Oblivion. “My goal was to create a vehicle that takes full advantage of the unusual opportunities of having no driver without ever compromising on beauty” says Daniel Simon. “Racing engineers and aerodynamicists have worked with me from the beginning to strike that balance. The Roborace is as much about competition as it is entertainment. Therefore - and quite unusual in today’s racing world - beauty was very high on our agenda and we work hard to merge the best performance with stunning styling.”
SPECS As with many Formula 1 vehicles, the Robocar’s body shell is mainly composed of carbon fibre. Weighing just 1000kg, it measures 4.8m long and 2m wide. Its 4 motors of 300kW each and a 540kW battery, allow it to reach top speeds of 320kp/h. The car’s low centre of gravity and tear drop shaped chassis help to improve its aerodynamic efficiency. “It was important to us that we generate substantial downforce without unnecessary parts cluttering the car, to maintain a clean and iconic look” explains Daniel Simon. “This is largely made possible by using the floor as the main aerodynamic device and we are currently developing active body parts that
are more organic and seamless than solutions today. I am excited to be part of the daring team of people who are making this happen.”
NAVIGATION AND ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE The cars use a system of lasers, radars and sensors for navigation, including five lidars, two radars, 18 ultrasonic sensors, two optical speed sensors and six AI cameras. Cars can also communication with each other, in order to avoid collision. The Robocar’s operating system, or nerve centre, is Nvidia’s Drive PX2. The PX2 is an Artificial Intelligence platform which is capable of up to 24 trillion AI operations per second. The system uses deep learning for 360-degree situational awareness around the car, working to determine precisely where the car is and to create its trajectory. All teams competing in the Roborace championship will use the same Robocar as a base, but will need to develop their own software algorithms in order to leverage its capacities and optimise performance. Roborace’s open Artificial Intelligence platform has been especially designed to this end, so that other companies can develop their own driverless software and push the limits in an extreme and safe environment.

FIRST SHOWS DURING THIS SEASON’S E PRIX Roborace’s DevBot and Robocars made several appearances during the 2016-2017 Formula E series, with the DevBot first being shown to the public during pre-season tests in August 2016. During the ePrix in Paris, in May, the Robocar performed a demonstration of its autonomous capabilities for the crowds, negotiating its way around 14 turns of the 1.9km street circuit. “It is another major milestone on this incredible journey” commented Roborace CEO Denis Sverdlov. “Roborace is the only company in the world right now testing driverless technologies on city streets without a human in the car – this is something truly unique.” During the Berlin ePrix in June, Roborace reverted to showing the DevBot prototype model, where the car performed a fully autonomous lap of the Formula E circuit at Tempelhof airport. After an initial first lap in explorer mode, to learn the circuit, the DevBot returned to the track to perform increasingly higher speeds, finishing with a top speed of 200km/h. Roborace subsequently released the first cockpit video footage of the lap which can be seen at https:// www.youtube.com/watch?v=T3f2xPjZ81U The journey so far has been positive, but not without challenges. After battery issues in Hong Kong caused Roborace to abandon their demonstration, the DevBot successfully drove twelve laps around the Moulay El Hassan Formula E circuit in Marrakesh. During testing ahead of the 2017 Buenos Aires ePrix, an incident
occurred during a race between two Robocars when one of them crashed after swerving to avoid a dog. Although the car was damaged, no one was harmed. The other vehicle did however manage to complete the course after achieving a top speed of 186km/h.
THE ROBORACE MISSION With DevBot and the Robocar, the short term mission of Roborace is to demonstrate that the future of automotive and information technology is already here and can even work in extreme conditions. Roborace believes that there are many independent talents throughout the globe that could contribute to this initiative. That is why one of the race teams will be organised as a crowd-sourced community team, open to enthusiastic software and technology experts from all over the world. In the medium to longer term, the series is designed to be a competition of intelligence where teams use the same “Robocar” in order to ensure all efforts are focussed on advancing autonomous software for everyday road cars to adopt.

A LOOK BACK AT THE MODEL 3 … ONCE UPON A TIME … The Model 3 raised many expectations and won the hearts and minds of hundreds of thousands of people. The next generation of EV drivers is now on its way, with a huge demand for reservations. The Model 3 alpha has been unveiled to the general public and more details are eagerly awaited. What will the cockpit look like? Will there be wipers? What will the interior look like? What will the rims look like? What will the autonomy be like? So many questions and so much excitement in the air! After all, the Model 3 is meant to be the EV that is affordable for a greater mankind, in order to achieve the vision of Elon Musk and Tesla. The truth is that most of us are looking forward to seeing the car, feeling her and enjoying a test drive. Owners of Roadster, Model S and Model X Teslas already know 28
the ‘EV feeling’ well - but it’s always special to welcome a new child into the family. TEXT & PHOTOS: MARTIN GILLET UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED
As you know, the Tesla Owners Club Belgium, which proudly represents Belgian owners, brand ambassadors and EV enthusiasts, was invited to the first Global Club Leaders Summit at the Mothership in Fremont, California. Although we were not on the Model 3 Event guests list - which we were not able to attend, thanks to Tesla’s open mind - we were able to spot the Model 3 Alpha model. We are
very thankful to Tesla and enjoyed looking at the gorgeous Model 3 under the spotlights! A funny fact is that the Belgians were the ‘first ones to ask’. Tesla thus allowed us to unveil the Model 3 by removing the car cover, while the other guests remained behind the courtesy line. We were very pleased to make Belgium shine and no doubt all the guests knew Belgium was attending! We enjoyed this fun moment. Of course, although staring at Model 3 on display is nice, witnessing a Model 3 in ‘the wild’ is even better. We had no plans or expectations, but we wanted to try our luck and started looking around the Bay Area to see if we could spot a Model 3. We were in good company, with fellow Owners - also referred to as the ‘Extended Family’. We quickly gathered a few Owners together ready to go out in a Model S on the lookout for the stylish Model 3.

As we all know, Tesla is no “ordinary car manufacturer”. If fact, they are not even a car manufacturer - rather they have a mission to ease the transition to sustainable mobility. Their approach is therefore rather “different” from other car producers. Test cars are not disguised or hidden from the general public. At the time, according

to the information shared between different communities, there were less than 70 Model 3s on the road undergoing testing. Most test cars have a number on the rear window to identify them. As many peers had already shared online pictures of the Model 3, mainly from California, we also wanted to have a bit of fun. We decided that we would drive around and let Model 3 comes to us.

At the Palo Alto Office - After the Global Club Leaders Summit held in Fremont, we spent the weekend with friends in the Bay area before visiting the colleagues from a famous German cloudbased company located in Palo Alto, ideally located literally across from Tesla’s Palo Alto Office. During our break, we took some fresh air and enjoyed a walk in the park across from the office. We were on the lookout but not expecting too much, as we had already seen Model 3 … We were amazed to witness a gorgeous silver Model 3 leaving the office. These were the best pictures we had the opportunity to take during our Californian walkabout. At the Tesla Mothership - We started out from the Fremont Factory and were happily surprised to see the Model 3 practicing on the company’s test track. We managed to have an open view of it and we were able to see her ‘up close’ for the first time! We repeated the operation the next morning and were lucky again. It was great to hang out with our fellow US Owners and friends. It felt liking being kids again, the night before Xmas, awaiting presents. Do you remember that feeling?
A Mountain View, Californian Supercharger - One last stop before heading home was at the Tesla Shareholders’ Meeting. We accompanied local Owners and friends to the meeting. As this had not been planned from our side, we didn’t have the right paperwork, so we just hung around with other EV enthusiasts and Tesla Owners. While we were talking we witnessed another Model 3, with a geeky sort of antenna on the roof.

FIRST DELIVERIES - TADA! Before we knew it, we had already reached the end of the first summer month. On July 28th 2017, Tesla finally unveiled the post-alpha Model 3. It was quite early for us back in Europe, as the event was hosted during Pacific Standard Time (PST) - read California as reference. “No pain no gain”, so we grabbed that extra cup of coffee and got up way before sunrise to join this milestone event. A large number of guests were invited to Fremont, to witness this moment ‘live’. In parallel a live feed was provided, so that we could all join the event and see the Model 3 on stage for ourselves. A short introduction highlighted the main goals for the EV revolution and the crucial part that the Model 3 will play in this Master Plan to bring EVs to the masses. Key information also provided in this presentation was the fact that the Model 3 is the safest car on the market, even when compared to leading competitors. It was interesting to see our favorite manufacturer overtake the safest car manufacturer, namely Volvo.
‘This is the real thing, what we have all been waiting for’. This was not a drill and the image of over 30 Model 3s kept floating on social media. It was surreal to see so many Model 3s in the same vicinity! Many of us felt like we were in a living dream! In total 30 cars were delivered to Elon Musk colleagues across different companies, including Tesla and Space X. These ‘rewarded’ colleagues are now fortunate enough to experience the Model 3 for themselves. What a clever strategy for boosting team moral and gaining mileage on the cars in order to keep learning from them. Judging by the smiles we saw when the Owners received access to their new cars (no more key anymore for the Model 3), we can say that they were more than pleased. Since then, Model 3s have been spotted even more frequently. New stills continue to arrive and unveil more and more of what the final production version will be like, including the interior, the different colours, the rims and other details.

AUTO MANUFACTURERS UP THE STAKES WITH NEW EVS OFFERINGS Auto manufacturers are upping their game with a tempting array of new EVs – and upgrades. Among these is the soon-to-be-released Jaguar I-PACE, which SuperCharged recently had the opportunity to review. For those considering an addition to the family, here are some of the choices coming to a garage near you… TEXT & PHOTOS: MARTIN GILLET AND JOANNA PAYS
THE JAGUAR I-PACE
34
The Jaguar I-PACE is one of the most eagerly anticipated new electric vehicles. Due to be launched in the second half of 2018, Martin Gillet, Editor of SuperCharged Magazine, attended previews of the car in May, in Belgium and in June, in Germany, during the ePrix in Berlin. Stylish and equipped with state-of-the-art innovations, with the I-PACE, Jaguar is embracing the changes in the automobile industry and confidently moving towards to a more sustainable future. The design of the I-PACE, by Ian Callum, Jaguar’s Director of Design, is not a major deviation from the stylish, British look of other models such as the F-PACE or E-PACE. Well-aligned with today’s design expectations, she combines clean and smooth lines with generous interior space and the latest innovations. There is a spacious cockpit with 12 inch multimedia screen for the driver and front passenger, with large and comfortable seats for rear passengers. 530 litres of cargo space are available in the trunk, with additional capacity in the front trunk. The mock-up version of the I-PACE on display had retractable door handles – similar to those seen on the Tesla Model S. The rear lights, very sharp and stylish, are embedded in the I-PACE’s body. Optional extras include a glass roof. Full specifications for the I-PACE have not yet been revealed, but it is expected to include a 90 kWh battery pack to give a range of over 500 kilometers (UE Norm NEDC). Delivering 700 nm of instantaneous torque, it should be capable of achieving 0 to 100 km/h in 4 seconds. The CCS standard will be used for charging in Europe, with different variations for the US, China and Japan. Although the car is still ‘work in progress’, the I-PACE impressed media and guests at the presentation events, with her stylish shape and list of specifications. During the Berlin ePrix event, we were fortunate enough to meet Dr Wolfgang Ziebart, Jaguar Land Rover’s

Engineering Director. “I think the I-PACE is aligned with Jaguar’s DNA in terms of overall design and specifications” said Dr Ziebart. “It will be 4WD only, as if you start with a 2WD option you then have to compromise the concept of load balancing. What we have seen is that Jaguar drivers are also buying electric cars. These findings, along with the research from the sales department, triggered some thinking. The I-PACE will be a genuine Jaguar with amazing acceleration.”

BMW NEW I3 AND I3S For those who cannot wait until 2019, from the same stable is BMW’s new i3 and the sportier i3s version, introduced at the end of August. The BMW i3 is currently the best-selling electric car in the premium compact segment and the new versions should see continued success, thanks to a major design refresh, improved technologies and enhanced handling. Both models rely on lithium-ion high-voltage 94Ah (33kWh) batteries, providing a range of around 270 to 290 km. Range-extender engines can be ordered as options.
THE MINI ELECTRIC CONCEPT Mini aficionados will not have to wait too long to get their hands on the electric version of their favourite car. At the end of August the BMW group announced the debut of the Mini Electric Concept which premieres at the IAA Cars 2017 in Frankfurt. The production version will be introduced in 2019. The Mini Electric Concept follows on from the introduction of the first electrified production Mini earlier this year - the Mini Countryman Plug-In Hybrid.
The i3 generates a maximum output of 170hp from standstill, with a top speed limited to 150 km/h. The sportier i3s is powered by a high-performance 184hp electric motor that generates peak torque of 270Nm. The i3s also boasts sports suspension with specially developed springs, dampers and anti-roll bars. Drivers can also select sport mode using the Driving Experience Control switch. The top speed of the i3s is limited to 160 km/h. In terms of technologies, both versions are equipped as standard with BMW’s updated iDrive operating system for infotainment, communications and navigation functions. The voice recognition system has also been optimised for functions such as searching for music and dictating e-mails. Driving Assistant Plus, Parking Assistant and Traffic Jam Assistant features are available as options.
Compact and agile, the Mini Electric Concept is based on the three door Mini hatchback. Its aerodynamics and lightweight design give a new take on sportiness and help to maximise its distance range. The car is instantly recognisable by its hexagonal radiator grill and circular headlights, which have been reinterpreted to reflect its emission-free technologies. In fact all of the car’s exterior design features have been specially developed to increase its range through optimising aerodynamics, while highlighting its dynamic driving character. The paint finish is Reflection Silver – a matt liquid metal colour shade. The range of the Mini Electric Concept has not yet been announced, but as is expected to be in the region of around 290km.
The car’s interior has a spacious feel, thanks to the lack of fixed B-pillars and transmission tunnel, while doors that open in opposite directions allow the occupants to get in and out with ease. Sustainable materials have been used wherever possible, with more than 80 per cent of the surfaces visible to the passengers made from recycled materials or renewable resources. Charging is also a better experience thanks to BMW’s 360° Electric range. The 360°’s Wallbox can supply 11kW of power, which allows enough energy for a range of around 180 km to be transferred in under three hours – five times quicker than with the standard charging cable. It is also possible to control the charging process using a smartphone app. Prices for the new i3 range from approximately 37,000 euros, up to around 43,500 euros for the i3s with range extender.

range, but the higher-spec models benefit from a bigger 41kWh battery to allow a 400 km range. Cars with the larger battery also get a fast charge option which enables an 80 per cent charge in just over an hour. As with previous editions of the Zoe, owners have the possibility to either buy or lease batteries with the car.
VOLKSWAGEN E-GOLF The latest Volkswagen e-Golf was unveiled at the beginning of September. Battery improvements, re-styling and a raft of connectivity functions all feature in the new model. The enhanced battery capacity (now 35.8 kwh) boosts the e-Golf’s range by 50 per cent compared to the previous model. A range of 300 km is quoted from the official New European Driving Cycle, while with driving style and other parameters considered the range is effectively 200 km. When the e-Golf needs charging the battery can go from empty to 80 per cent full in just 45 minutes if a 40 kW DC rapid charger connection is used. Alternatively, charging from empty to full from a wallbox takes just over 5 hours. Power has also been upgraded to 100kW, improving performance to 0 to 100 kmh in 9.6 seconds. As before, there is a single-speed gearbox. Connectivity-wise, Volkswagen’s Car-Net mobile app allows owners to access various functions of the vehicle via their smartphones. The standard Discover Navigation Pro infotainment system includes Gesture Control and a suite of online information such as traffic, fuel pricing, parking space availability and weather conditions. Prices for the new e-Golf start from around 35,000 euros.
NISSAN LEAF Another updated EV to be unveiled later this month, will be the next generation of the Nissan Leaf. Manufacturers have not as yet given many details, but promise a new, more aerodynamic design which will help to boost its range distance. One feature that has been revealed is the car’s e-Pedal, which when switched on means that the accelerator becomes the only pedal the driver requires for 90 per cent of their road journey. The Leaf will feature new semi-autonomous driving functions, including an automated parking system as part of the Nissan’s ProPILOT tech suite of driving assistance solutions. At the push of a button the new Leaf will drive itself in a single lane, controlling the steering, acceleration and braking to assist the driver.

In early June, we couldn’t resist taking the Jaufen Pass by storm in the 773 hp-strong Tesla X P90D. In early July, we rode the same route in another Tesla. This was not the X, but an S 90D rented out from Nature Hotel Rainer. The choice of an electric rental car is a perfect fit for the eco-hotel, which treats nature just as well as its guests. In the cellar space of his hotel, Hannes Rainer has installed energy generators that use sustainable fuels exclusively. The saunas and the pools are heated by an eight-cylinder car motor that whirrs inside of soundproof housing. The engine block runs on an emulsified fuel mix of vegetable oil and water and thereby keeps the emission of soot and harmful gases to a minimum level. For heating, a wood chipper heating unit is used which uses wood from nearby forests. Electricity is generated from the three small hydroelectric plants of which there are plenty in the Jaufen Valley. They provide power not only to the hotel, but all other buildings in the village. The battery of the Tesla is charged by the very same green current.

TRADING HOTEL BEDS FOR ELECTRIC MOBILITY
The Tesla S 90D that Nature Hotel Rainer rents is property of Greenstorm Mobility. The Austrian firm is active in the electric mobility industry and enjoys its fast-growing success thanks to an innovative exchange formula: in exchange for empty hotel rooms, hoteliers receive electric bikes, scooters, cars and/or charging stations. They can then use them themselves or rent them to their guests. Greenstorm Mobility in turn “sells the hotel rooms. That takes place in the form of vouchers offered on the Internet at greatly reduced rates. This simple concept is catching on. This year, Greenstorm Mobility has rented 3,888 e-bikes to over 800 hotels in South Tyrol, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Mallorca. After the season wraps up, the bikes undergo thorough maintenance and are sold with a two-year guarantee. Yet the most exciting - and expensive - items on wheels that are exchanged for hotel rooms are the Tesla S and X, as well as electric models from BMW, Renault and smart.

FIA FORMULA E CHAMPIONSHIP 2016-2017 THE WRAP UP Formula E is the world’s first electric street racing series. An FIA championship, it takes place in the some of most dynamic cities such as Hong Kong, Mexico and New York. Besides providing an exciting new form of motor racing entertainment, the series is also a championship with a mission – that of promoting sustainable mobility.

Formula E differs in many ways from other forms of motor racing. For one thing it is much more engaged and involved with his audience. The championship’s FanBoost, for example, is a concept that encourages interaction between the drivers and their fans. It allows them to vote for their favourite drivers to receive an additional power boost in the race. This advantage has inspired Formula E’s teams and drivers to reach out and connect with their fans, creating a new level of dialogue in motorsport. The origins of Formula E began with FIA President Jean Todt, FIA President, with a vision of promoting the potential of sustainable mobility. Under the direction of Formula E CEO Alejandro Agag, this vision was transformed into a global motor racing brand, with its first championship race of Season 1 taking place in Beijing, on 13 September 2014.
SEASON 3 DEBUT IN HONG KONG Season 3 saw no less than 12 races taking place in 9 different countries across the globe. Competing were 25 drivers from 10 different teams, among which were the newly created Panasonic- Jaguar works team. The 2016-2017 series kicked off in Hong Kong, on 9th October. Nelson Piquet Jr qualified for pole position and led the field for 17 laps, before crashing into a barrier on the Hong Kong Waterfront circuit. Although he returned to the race, it was eventually Switzerland’s Sébastien Buemi from team e.dams-Renault who secured the first victory of the season. Buemi continued his victorious streak, taking first place in 7 out of the total of 12 races. Nevertheless, with two race disqualifications and a further two races missed in New York (due to scheduling conflicts) this was not enough to assure him the overall driver championship title for the season.
LATIN AMERICA AND EUROPE Following a four month winter break, the season recommenced in February. The Latin American leg of its tour comprised races in Buenos Aires and Mexico City (won respectively by Buemi and Di Grassi) before moving back to Europe for the competitions in Monaco, Paris and Berlin. The Berlin ePrix round, at Tempelhof Airport Street Circuit, took place on 10 and 11th June. Two races were scheduled, one of which was a replacement for planned race in Brussels (cancelled due to lack of agreement on the exact location for the circuit). The first of these two races saw Buemi disqualified over a breach of tyre pressure regulations. Although he did go on to win the second race of the Berlin round, the disqualification reduced his point advantage on the championship leaderboard, giving Brazil’s Lucas di Grassi a greater window of opportunity. Belgium’s Jérôme D’Ambrosio was unfortunately not able to repeat the success of his win at the Berlin ePrix in 2015.
NORTH AMERICAN LEG AND FINAL ROUNDS The final four races of the season took place in July, in New York City and Montreal. Everything rested on the final ePrix in Montreal, as despite a disqualification and two missed races, Buemi still had a chance to take the title with a possible fifty-nine points on the table up for grabs. His hopes disappeared, however, following another disqualification when his car was judged to be underweight. Di Grassi thus displaced season-long leader Buemi to gain the championship title.
The second race, in Marakesh, marked the championship’s first foray onto the African continent. The 33 lap race took place in dry and sunny conditions, while the competition also heated up. JeanEric Vergne looked promising, but was later penalised for speeding in the pit lane. This put paid to his chances of victory in the race, dropping him back to 8th place. Sébastien Buemi, Sam Bird and Felix Rosenqvist took the first, second and third places respectively.

Lucas di Grassi was officially crowned as the new Formula E champion at the end of season awards gala in Montreal. The ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport driver was handed his trophy by FIA President Jean Todt. Sébastien Buemi eventually took second place overall, with Sweden’s Felix Rosenqvist taking the third podium. Teams’ champions Renault e.dams were presented their award by Formula E Founder and CEO Alejandro Agag and deputy CEO Alberto Longo.
JÉRÔME D’AMBROSIO – BEING PART OF THE CHANGE IN MOBILITY AND SUSTAINABILITY Just after the Berlin ePrix, we were able to catch up with Dragon Racing team pilot Jérôme D’Ambrosio. Over his career, Belgian national Jérôme has driven in several other disciplines, from electric karting to traditional Formula 1. He has competed in all three seasons of Formula E, with Dragon Racing team and will be doing so again in Season 4. He achieved his first Formula E victory at the 2015 Berlin ePrix and a second at the 2016 Mexican ePrix. “Formula E is the most difficult to drive in terms of all the categories that I have driven in – but its also more fun racing than any other category because of the acceleration and the overall energy
around the events” said Jérôme D’Ambrosio. “Season 3 has shown the continued evolution of Formula E. It’s a category that is growing, developing, is appealing and has a real sense to it.” “Formula E is really the Championship to be in right now. The world is changing and it will be completely different in 15 to 20 years in terms of mobility and sustainability. To be part of this change is amazing. For us in the cars we are trying to help motivate manufacturers to invest in technological developments that make sense for the years to come in terms of mobility and environmental issues - and of course to put on a good show for the fans!”
NEXT SEASON - MORE RACES AND NEW VENUES The fourth season of Formula E will begin slightly later in the year than previously, on 2 and 3 December, in Hong Kong. One again there will be 20 cars from 10 teams in each race. Jérôme D’Ambrosio will again be racing for the Dragon Racing team. The 2017-2018 series will see 14 races in 11 different cities compared to 12 races in 9 countries this year - notably with the additions of Santiago, Chile and Sao Paolo. BEVS OVERTAKING ICE SOONER THAN EXPECTED? ANALYSTS SHARE THEIR INSIGHTS WITH SUPERCHARGED Is the electric car manufacturing sector to overtake internal combustion models sooner than we thought? Recent headlines announced that investors have valued Tesla as the fourth most valuable car company in the world – ahead of the likes of BMW. Reactions to this news from industry experts are somewhat mixed. SuperCharged spoke with expert analysts from the automotive sector to find out more.
TEXT & PHOTOS: JOANNA PAYS 54
NOT (YET) FOR PROFIT The estimated value of Tesla Inc stock made a massive leap in the first half of this year, rivalling and at some moments surpassing that of BMW, to reach around 60 billion dollars (www.motorfinanceonline.com/news/tesla-overtakes-bmw-value/). Effectively analysts believe in the future of electric vehicles but the fact behind this headline is that Tesla is still yet a minor player in terms of annual output, with around 80,000 cars in 2016. It should be mentioned that in sales of sedan cars in the US, Tesla outstripped overseas competition from the likes of Mercedes, Audi and BMW. Nevertheless, on a worldwide scale, Tesla’s 80,000 vehicles has to compare with a production of around 2.4 million vehicles by BMW in 2016. In terms of profits too, the comparison is not flattering for Tesla. It is estimated that last year the company made a loss of around 725 million dollars, while BMW made 7.7 billion dollars. Tesla has effectively been losing money on its higher end cars but expects to turn to profit with its more financially accessible models in the coming years.
TESLA’S CHALLENGE IS TO GET VOLUME “Tesla is showing where the future of vehicle manufacturing is heading” says Max Erich of ING Economics and author of the report ‘Breakthrough of Electric Vehicles threatens European car industry’, published in July. “More precisely, I think that the future for passenger cars lies not just in battery electric cars, but in autonomous driving and in connected cars. Tesla is basically the
first manufacturer that has tackled all three of these issues. For instance with Tesla, if you need an update, you just have to make a download and Tesla was the first producer to achieve this.” “The challenge now is for Tesla to get volume” underlines Max Erich. “Globally, there are around 70 to 80 million new cars produced every year and currently Tesla only accounts for around 0.1% of them. They have shown that they have the car of the future, but if they succeed in achieving volume it is only then they will become a real challenger.”
BATTERY TECHNOLOGIES STILL HAMPERING EV GROWTH While Tesla’s new Gigafactory in Nevada is expected to reduce the cost of EV batteries by around 40% over time, thanks to economies of scale, for Kevin Mak, Senior Analyst, Global Automotive Practice at Strategy Analytics, one of the biggest challenges to the move to electric vehicles remains battery technologies. Besides the issues of costs and inadequate driving ranges, is the time required for charging. “Even with fast charging points, they take their toll on the battery lifecycle. We don’t expect to see significant improvements in battery technologies to increase the resilience of battery cell structures to repeated fast-charging and to raise energy and power density until the mid-2020s at the earliest.”

Strategy Analytics’ forecast for the market is therefore modest until 2024. “We could be seeing European production of battery electric cars rising from 136,000 units in 2016, to around one million units by 2024 – that’s an increase in penetration from 1 to 5% of total light vehicle production” says Kevin Mak. “Full and plug-in hybrids will see greater demand, from 0.5 million to 2 million, from 3 to 10%. The market potential for more cost effective 48 Volt mild hybrids is even greater, as new systems enter the market now to grow to a possible 2.7 million units by 2024, to represent 13% of all new light vehicles.”
“Nevertheless, there is now a clear momentum driving electrification in the industry, mainly from a government desire to limit air pollution. The Volkswagen Diesel Emission Scandal has brought home the challenges auto makers face to meeting tightening emissions legislation. This has increased the interest in electrified powertrains and auto makers have responded by widening their offerings of electric vehicles. Tesla is raising economies of scale in its battery production in order to compete more effectively against combustion engine vehicles. However, it will also face increasing competition from newcomers and from Volkswagen, which is aiming to become a leader in electrification in order to regain its reputation after Dieselgate.”

BARRIERS TO EV OWNERSHIP ARE ABOUT TO BE BROKEN
CHINA LEADING THE WAY, THANKS TO GOVERNMENT INITIATIVES
According to the ING report on Electric Vehicles, many of the major barriers to demand – charging infrastructure, range and pricing - are about to be broken. New battery technology should improve range to increasingly meet consumer expectations from 2020 onwards.
“China is leading the way in terms of growth in electric vehicle ownership” says Kevin Mak. “Emissions controls in some areas of China are now so stringent that new vehicle licences can only be obtained by a form of lottery. The purchase of electric vehicles enables owners to ‘jump the queue’. In Europe, the front runners in terms of EV market share are Norway and the Netherlands, encouraged by government subsidies and advantages. France and UK are likely to be the next to follow, with the UK already having stated that it may ban new combustion engine vehicles in the future.”
Ultra-fast charging of batteries will enable a 300km charge in 20 minutes and this will further improve over time. In terms of range, most BEVs on today’s market have a range of 200 to 300 kilometres, depending on driving style and weather conditions. Rationally, looking at average daily driving distances, this should be enough. Research by ING however shows most consumers expect more. New BEVs will have to jump this barrier. By the time ranges reach 800 km, more than three-quarters of drivers surveyed would be ready to consider an EV. In the end, Erich expects that most buyers will in fact settle for 500 kilometres of range, as networks of fast charging stations expand. As battery costs continue to decline, a high range (500km) battery electric vehicle in the VW Golf segment should become cost competitive - in terms of total cost of ownership - with a comparable petrol car in 2024 in Europe (excluding any subsidies or incentives).
TOWARDS 100% ELECTRIC BY 2035 ING’s new report on the breakthrough in electric vehicles (https://www.ing.nl/zakelijk/kennis-over-de-economie/uw-sector/automotive/electric-car-threatens-European-car-industry. html) predicts that Europe will reach the point where nearly 100% of all new passenger cars are electric vehicles in 2035. Leading up to then, over the next seven years, the barriers to demand (infrastructure, range, purchase price and total costs of operation) will gradually be broken down. The first part of the 2020 decade will see fast growth in EV sales, but it will still be a

market that needs support from Government initiatives to boost transition to electric vehicles. BEVs will be able to stand on their own feet from 2024 onwards but the run-up to that point in time is important. “There has been a big change in mindsets in the automotive industry and now we are moving steadily towards battery” says Max Erich. “This change of mindset has been partly influenced by the threat of further emissions regulations and risks of higher taxes on petrol. Moreover Tesla has shown how the experience of driving battery-driven vehicles can be better in so many ways. The fact that Tesla has gathered over 450,000 orders (and counting) for the Model 3 has really shaken up the industry but Tesla will still have to invest a lot of money to get the growth they need.”
THE WINNERS WILL BE CONSUMERS AND THE ENVIRONMENT Electric cars are not something new for the industry. In 1912 they accounted for 38% of US registrations, before their market share declined in the face of competition from Ford’s Model T. Today, after more than a century, electric cars are back and ready to stay. Once BEVs beat internal combustion engine cars on price and quality, the transition should be exponential. “The biggest winners in the automotive market in the end will be the consumer” concludes Max Erich. “Once battery costs come down, consumers will enjoy substantially lower costs of running their vehicles in terms of maintenance as well as energy consumption.”

URBAN FURNITURE FOR SMART CITIES One of the biggest barriers to making the transition to electric vehicles is the problem faced by city-based apartment dwellers with no logistics for overnight charging. Among the solutions on the horizon is ‘Smart Urban Furniture’, the new trend for environmentally-responsible street fittings.

INNOVATIONS A wave of innovations in streamlined street furnishings which incorporate new technologies are already being piloted in cities around the world. These have given town planners and developers the inspiration to rethink how they can enhance their cityscape environments, improve local services, free the streets from clutter – and help them meet emission reduction targets. These interactive street items, mostly based on open source, are capable of integrating a multitude of existing and future technologies, with imagination the only barrier to improvements in the outdoor urban lifestyle. Among the first of these have been intelligent bus shelters that not only track the actual status of each bus route, but also provide interactive ‘wayfinding’ maps. These wayfinder maps, which can be assimilated into practically any item of urban furniture, also display alternative multi-modal transport suggestions for navigating around the city.

THE INTERNET OF THINGS The Internet of Things has given new potential to even the most basic items of street furniture, such as trash cans and park benches, transforming them with connected, energy-saving technologies that improve the quality of life for citizens. In Brussels, trash containers are gradually becoming Smart bins, which are being deployed in more and more areas of the city. Self-sufficiently powered by solar cells, these containers compress waste, increasing the capacity of a standard bin by around six times. A built in data transmission system then sends advice to the public cleaning service when the bin is full and a collection can then be scheduled immediately. As a result, waste volume is reduced and bin collections can be cut by over 80%. Less waste collection trucks on the road has to be good news for traffic congestion!
STRAWBERRY ENERGY The park bench is also moving up to the next level, better looking and definitely more intelligent, to become ‘Smart Benches’ that gather and use solar energy.
UK-based Strawberry Energy is one example. The company was created by a group of young Serbian entrepreneurs and engineers with the mission of developing solar-powered street furniture designed to harmonise with the surroundings and enhance the lifestyle of the mobile generation. Its Smart Benches and ‘Strawberry Trees’ are fitted with multiple charging ports for a variety of mobile devices. They also provide free Wi-Fi access, making them mini-urban hubs for socialising, surfing or working. Built-in sensors monitor the environmental air quality in real-time and users can check this data via the Strawberry Energy smart phone app. If there is a power cut in the grid, Strawberry devices have the added advantage of providing emergency lighting and recharging points. Strawberry Energy has won several awards around the world for its environmentally-conscious designs, including first place in the Public Consumption Reduction category at the European Union’s Sustainable Energy Week, in Brussels in 2011. Its Smart Bench and Strawberry Tree mobile charging stations have already been installed in several major cities across Europe and in the US.

SHUFFLE MULTI-PURPOSE STREET LIGHTING … One of the Belgian-based companies at the forefront of the urban furniture rEvolution is Schréder (http://www.schreder.com/en). This manufacturer of street lighting systems for nearly a century has now moved into the next generation, with a range of multi-functional street lighting poles which incorporate, among other things, internet connectivity and charging stations for electric vehicles. The products are marketed under the brand name of Shuffle. Besides broadband connectivity via WiFi, the Shuffle’s functions can include mobile device chargers and a loud speaker that can be used for playing ambient music, or for public address announcements. Sensors on the pole detect if there are passers-by and its CCTV cameras can be used as surveillance to help ensure crime-free, safe streets. The Shuffle’s energy-efficient LED lights are dimmed until its sensors detect a nearby car or pedestrian, when the lights then power up to full. This means that energy is only used when it is needed.
All of the Shuffle functions can be controlled remotely and most maintenance and updates can be executed from a distance. The Shuffle’s modular systems are based on open standards and are thus compatible with other manufacturers’ hardware and software.
NOW WITH EV CHARGERS AND WIFI “Local councils don’t want street clutter, with too many objects on the pavement and complicated networks and maintenance operations” explains Mischa Quinton, Product Manager for the Shuffle. “Our idea with the Shuffle range is to integrate multiple functions into street lighting for a more aesthetic look. Less objects on the streets also means more simplified power networks, which makes energy use even more economical.” One of the best features of the Shuffle is of course that it can be used to provide charging points for electric vehicles on every street. From a distance drivers can see a green LED on the street light which indicates that the charging point is available and free

THE SMART REVOLUTION Smart Urban Furniture is helping to transform regional environmental policies and targets into real action on the ground. In this way cities can do “more with less” and fully leverage technologies as enablers for improving people’s quality of life. These multi-purpose installations are set to revolutionise the look and role of cities, in the way that mobile phones have evolved to smartphones that integrate all personal communications, cameras and many other features into one device. Urban Furniture will play in the transformation of cities into Smart Cities, optimising multiple aspects of communication, lifestyle, transportation and sustainability. These will not only help to use energy in a more responsible manner, but also encourage the migration to electric vehicle ownership in growing urban populations with air pollution concerns. to use. By scanning the pole’s QR code with their smartphones they can then access the charging point. A metering device measures the amount of energy consumed so that the user can be billed by the power provider. “The idea is simple” says Mischa. “There are plenty of streetlights installed along roads in public spaces, so why not use them as EV charging points too? Why have separate installations when you can have a single integrated one? Less is more! “ Worldwide deployment of Shuffle is still ongoing, but the products are already in use in 20 countries such as China, Australia and others in Latin America and Europe. Clients include public bodies and local authorities, as well as private corporations, airports and carparks. The second generation of Shuffle will be launched at the next Smart City Fare, later this year in Barcelona. New features, as yet ‘under wraps’ will then be unveiled.
