A Word From Us

Change is a word that can stir up a whirlwind of emotions. It can be daunting and, for many, an intimidating leap into the unknown. But change also carries the promise of growth and the possibility of something refreshingly better.

As I write this, I find myself reflecting on change through a very personal lens. Six months ago, my life shifted with the arrival of my second son, Bruce. I’ve been immersed in the fog of sleepless nights, endless diaper changes, and the joy of watching this tiny human begin his journey in the world. Meanwhile, my 2.5-yearold son, Crosby, was experiencing his own transformation. His world, once centered entirely around him, suddenly changed. It’s been a journey—challenging yet rewarding—as we all adapt to our new family dynamic.

Professionally, I’ve embraced change as the new Executive Editor of Lifestyle Magazine. For those who don’t know me, I’m Stephanie Steelman. With over a decade in PR and marketing, I’ve launched various businesses, each teaching me the power of adaptability. Four years ago, I co-founded Root Creative Marketing with my business partner, Sam Justice, and it’s been a journey of growth ever since. Outside of work, I’m a proud mother of two boys, wife to an amazing husband, and a pet lover with a bustling household.

As Executive Editor, I have the privilege of continuing the legacy of those who have shaped this publication. Their dedication to sharing the stories of the South Valley has made this magazine a community treasure. I’m committed to upholding those values while introducing fresh perspectives. Our team at Root is excited to support local businesses and celebrate community stories.

Change is the constant that pushes us forward. In these transitions are opportunitiesfor growth. I’m eager to share new stories, celebrate our community’s successes, and embrace the changes ahead. Here’s to new beginnings and the promising roads they take us down.

To be honest, becoming the publisher of a magazine was not on my radar. But finding myself here, at the helm of this magazine, feels both surreal and perfectly right. This isn't just a business venture for me; it's an opportunity to connect with something I truly believe in: people.

Looking back, it's clear that the journey to this point was paved not on my own, but with the support of a long list of people. From parents, who instilled the values I hold, to the lifelong friends who have been my constant companions—their influence has shaped not only who I am, but where I am today. And most of all, my wife Alyssa and our daughters, whose belief in me makes anything feel possible.

We're stepping into this role with a mix of excitement and humility. We know we have big shoes to fill, and we're deeply grateful to the teams that came before us for building such a strong foundation. We're eager to honor their legacy while bringing our own personal touch to the publication.

More than anything, we believe in the power of people. We're inspired by our dedicated team, whose passion and expertise will bring these pages to life. We're energized by the new opportunities that come with a new challenge, another office, and new relationships. But we're committed to building rapport with you, and becoming part of a community that extends beyond the pages of this magazine. At Root, we own our mission statement: People are at the heart of what we do, therefore we have a heart for people.

This is a new season, another chapter, and we're filled with ambition to learn, grow, and contribute. We envision a publication that inspires and uplifts, reflecting the values that we hold dear. Our hope is to continue serving you with authenticity and care, and we believe that by nurturing our relationship, we can create something truly special.

We're honored to be along for the ride.

Cultivating Thankfulness

Nichola Kresbach

November is the perfect time to reflect on what we’re thankful for, as we prepare for Thanksgiving and the holiday season. Cultivating thankfulness can lift our mood, strengthen relationships, and bring a sense of peace. Here are some ideas and tips to help you daily cultivate a grateful mindset throughout the month.

1. Start a Gratitude Jar

Every day in November, write down one thing you're thankful for on a small piece of paper and place it in a jar. At the end of the month, read through them and relive all the positive moments.

Tip: Encourage family members to add their gratitude notes, too. It can become a heartwarming holiday tradition and can physically remind your family of the blessings in your lives

2. Create a Thankfulness Walk

Take 10 minutes out of your day to go on a “thankfulness walk.” While you walk, reflect on three things you're grateful for. It could be as simple as appreciating the fresh air, the changing leaves, or the ability to take a quiet moment for yourself.

Tip: Try walking in a new location each week to discover new things to be thankful for.

3. Send a Daily Thank You

Every day in November, send a message to someone you appreciate. It could be a family member, friend, or even a coworker. A short text or email telling them why you're grateful for them can brighten their day—and yours!

Tip: Set a reminder on your phone or calendar to send your daily thank you, so it becomes a positive habit.

4. Gratitude Scavenger Hunt

Create a scavenger hunt by looking for things in your environment that you’re grateful for. This could be in your home, your workplace, or even while you're out and about. Aim to find five new things to be thankful for every day.

Tip: Take pictures on your phone of the things you find and create a "gratitude collage" at the end of the month.

5. Thankfulness Tree

Draw a simple tree on a poster or large paper and cut out leaves from colored paper. On each leaf write something you’re thankful for and attach it to the tree. Watch the tree grow throughout the month!

Tip: This is a great activity for families, as kids can get involved in writing their own gratitude leaves.

6. Mindful Meals

Before eating any meal, take a moment to appreciate the food, where it came from, and the people who helped bring it to your table. This small moment of gratitude can make even everyday meals feel special.

Tip: Encourage conversation at the dinner table by having each person share one thing they’re thankful for before eating or at the end of the meal.

7. Thankful Journaling

Keep a gratitude journal on your nightstand and, before bed each night, jot down three things you're thankful for. This can be a peaceful way to end the day and helps refocus your mind on the positives.

Tip: Challenge yourself to write down new things each night to avoid repetition and deepen your appreciation for the little things.

By incorporating these tips into your daily routine, cultivating thankfulness can become second nature. You’ll find yourself searching for the small gifts of daily life to remember for your journal, notes, and conversations. November is more than just “the Thanksgiving month”—it's the perfect time to spread gratitude and appreciation in your life and community as you reflect on the year as it comes to a close.

FEAST YOUR EYES

5 Easy Tips for a Fabulous Fall Tablescape

Transform your dining space into a cozy retreat with a beautifully curated tablescape. These simple tips will help you blend textures, colors, and natural elements to create the perfect fall table for your gatherings.

The Centerpiece Sets the Mood

Build your design around a focal point, then work outward to arrange your place settings.

Personalize Your Color Palette

Incorporate a trending color, but don’t let it dominate. Mix in shades that resonate with your personal style, family traditions, and regular décor.

Textural Contrast Adds Depth

Use layers: chargers, plates, and napkins. Don’t forget name cards with a small accent, like our mini velvet pumpkin for a playful touch!

Bring the Outdoors In

Incorporate elements from your yard—flowers, greenery, or branches. If you have a beautiful wooden table, show it off instead of covering it up with a tablecloth.

Tailored Touches

Personal touches and hand-picked natural elements make your tablescape unique and memorable, adding that perfect finishing touch to your seasonal décor.

what’s good ground?

Good Ground celebrates the people, places, and innovations that define agriculture in California's Central Valley. Each month, we'll highlight the vital contributions this region makes to the economy, showcasing the stories and traditions that connect our community to the land.

From english student to organic farmer: agustin cardenas's fruitful journey

In the heart of California's Central Valley, where agriculture thrives, Agustin Cardenas has cultivated a unique path — one that intertwines persimmons, organic practices, and a dedication to community. His journey, however, began far from the fields he now tends.

Agustin, a native Spanish speaker, arrived in the United States with a thirst for knowledge and a desire to learn English. While attending Reedley High School, a chance encounter with Rachel Medina, a local farmer's wife, would forever alter his course. “It was more than luck,” Agustin reflects. "It was a blessing." Recognizing his potential, Rachel offered him a job, introducing him to the intricacies of farm management and payroll. This opportunity blossomed into a lifelong passion as Agustin eventually purchased the Medinas' 40-acre farm, embarking on his own agricultural adventure.

Today, Agustin oversees a diverse organic operation, growing a variety of fruits, including peaches, plums, nectarines, and citrus, while also farming conventional blueberries. But it's the persimmon, with its vibrant orange hue and delicate sweetness, that holds a special place in his heart. “To me, it's a delicious piece of fruit,” he shares, “and I feel most people are going to enjoy eating persimmons, so why not grow something that I thought people would like?”

The Central Valley's climate provides an ideal environment for persimmon cultivation, and Agustin has embraced the challenge of growing this unique fruit organically. He explains that healthy trees are the foundation of beautiful produce, emphasizing the importance of keeping pests and weeds under control. His commitment to organic practices extends beyond his own farm, advocating for a healthier and more sustainable approach to agriculture. “Some years have been good, and some years have been hard," Agustin admits.

Agustin’s passion for persimmons is evident in his personal preference for enjoying the fruit. “My favorite way is eating Fuyu persimmons…just fresh.” he says. “You can just bite into that piece of fruit, as if it was an apple, but even better. When I peel my persimmons, I make slices, thin slices, and eat it like potato chips. That's my favorite way of eating them.”

Beyond his own enjoyment, Agustin’s persimmons have also become a cherished ingredient in his family's traditions. A special persimmon tree, dedicated to his mother-in-law, yields the fruit she uses to create her renowned persimmon cookies. “She loves making persimmon cookies,” Agustin fondly recalls, “and that's a Hachiya, that's not a Fuyu. So whenever they're ripe, that's when she gets her persimmons. And in return, we get persimmon cookies. So it's another blessing.”

Agustin’s dedication to organic farming and his passion for persimmons have not only enriched his family's life, but have

also contributed to the Central Valley's agricultural landscape. His produce, known for its exceptional quality and taste can be found at retailers throughout The United States and Canada under the Homegrown Organic Farms label.

“Thirty years farming now,” Agustin contemplates. “Hoping to continue on, farming, only God knows how long.” His story serves as an inspiration, demonstrating the positive impact individuals can have on their community and the environment. “I hope whatever you guys are doing,” he says, “encourages people to eat a little healthier and support our organic growers.”

Agustin Cardenas's story is a testament to the power of perseverance, passion, and a commitment to sustainable practices. His love for the land and dedication to farming have yielded a bountiful harvest—one that nourishes both body and soul.

CULINARY LEGACY:

THE VINTAGE PRESS AND THE VARTANIANS

The Vintage Press Restaurant is an oasis of culinary culture in our own backyard. To take in the surroundings, and experience the VP for myself, I arrived a little early, ordering a beer before my interview with executive chef and co-owner David Vartanian.

A FAMILY LEGACY

David is a man with whom many of us have developed a friendship over the years. To visit him, you typically need to go to the restaurant, which he rarely leaves. He and his brother, Greg, serve the family restaurant, carrying on the tradition of the five-star establishment their father built. David carries a beautiful and well-earned pride about the place, which is apparent when talking to him about the past and present of the VP. “I've always just wanted to be part of it,” David tells me when I ask what drew him to the restaurant. In 1966, a young David watched as his father John Vartanian took an old cinder block and cement building, and over several years and multiple additions, created the modern version of today's VP. The property was built room by room: “My dad wasn’t a big risk taker, so he paid as he went along,” David explains.

HERITAGE IN EVERY DETAIL

We are sitting in what is now called the Garden Room. It was originally the main and only building of the restaurant, which started as a Hofbräu, with vintage wine presses as the theme, hence the restaurant name. The original building had no windows. “I remember them cutting these walls out,” David says, as we look out the booth window into the garden and patio. In the room sits the most wonderful array of leaded and stained glass. “I still remember the day my dad purchased that collection,” David says, reminiscing about the window displays. “My sisters and I hopped in the car with our dad, and we drove to Ojai, where they were sitting in a dusty garage.” This story and many similar memories are treasures in and of themselves for David, as they connect to the visual delicacy patrons have delighted in over the decades. On the back western wall of the Garden Room looms a large mural filled with angelic figures, celebrating youth and life. The piece, painted in 1910, was acquired from a Parisian mansion. The century-old mural could just as easily grace the walls of larger art collections, like those seen at Hearst Castle.

The grand bar area provides the opportunity to sit and soak in a traditional old-world, Victorian style parlor. The surroundings bring to mind 1920s authors and artists F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, or Salvador Dalí, who would likely be found drinking absinthe in their time, which is still served at the VP. Absinthe and other classic libations and cocktails are served and created behind the sturdy 1890s wood-and-mirror Brunswick Bar—the same company that makes pool tables. Purchased in San Francisco, it was the focal point for the opening of the VP bar in 1983. Throughout the room, large framed vintage euro posters, and grandiose beer mirrors hang high above marble and dark wood tabletops that host dining groups or intimate couples.

AMERICANA CHARM

David is especially proud of the leaded glass and wood partition on the northern end of the room, which separates the bar and the restaurant. This beautiful Americana item was built in 1890 and acquired by David’s father from the Thermopolis, Wyoming’s Hole in the Wall saloon—a famed Butch Cassidy haunt. Legend has it while filming “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid”, Robert Redford himself took a liking to the same spot, and bought the saloon’s old wooden bar.

As David looks out our booth window, into the garden and outdoor patio area, he smiles. “That’s modeled after a Los Angeles restaurant called Bistro Garden. Same chairs, same color umbrellas.” Bistro Garden, now closed, is currently home to the world-famous restaurant Spago. John Vartanian enjoyed the spot so much, he replicated it back home in Visalia. The location allows anyone to experience French cafe-style dining.

THE CUISINE

With such beautiful surroundings to keep up with, the culinary bar has always been set high at the VP. This farm-to-table restaurant sets the pace while keeping with tradition, serving the best cuts of beef, fresh fish, and produce prepared to perfection. In the autumn, seasonal roasted baby pumpkins reappear. This has become a truly magical and nostalgic plate for so many of us who flock back to taste it once again. It's also a place where a family can try escargot together for the first time. Or you can simply order a glass bottle of Coke, served with a small glass of ice, and sit on the patio listening to the birds of spring sing. The Vintage Press delivers to all the senses. One doesn’t go there simply to eat, but to experience. And on that, you will feast.

R eimer's Candies in Three Rivers embodies the magic of old-fashioned sweets and the cherished memories made by families for generations. Acquired by local entrepreneurs Rob and Leslee Taylor in December 2023, Reimer's is now part of a family of brands that includes another local favorite, Stafford's Chocolates in Porterville. The Taylors and their staff remain dedicated to honoring the original vision of Reimer's founders, ensuring that the spirit of the beloved candy shop continues to thrive for future sweets seekers. Through their efforts, Reimer's maintains its status as a nostalgic gem, offering handcrafted treats reminiscent of simpler times.

Lifestyle: What is the story behind Reimer's Candies?

Rob: Reimer's began in 1955 as a small family-owned candy shop in Three Rivers. Founders Ted and Millie Huffaker sought to capture the magic of old-fashioned confectionery, using traditional methods to handcraft chocolates and candies. The Reimer family took ownership in 1978 and ran the business until 2005, when the Bretz family took over. Today, we feel honored to continue the tradition that started almost 70 years ago. The original owners built something truly special—a place where handcrafted sweets evoke nostalgia for bygone days, and we remain committed to preserving that old-fashioned charm.

Lifestyle: How has Reimer's maintained its classic feel?

Rob: One of the most special things about Reimer's is how each owner has faithfully preserved the shop’s original essence over the years. Although we've added new products and recipes, we've stayed true to Reimer's roots, continuing to use the same artisanal techniques and preserving select timeless recipes that have made it a beloved local treasure for generations. From the moment you step through the door, you’re met with the same vintage charm that has drawn people in for decades. The atmosphere, reminiscent of an old European sweet shop, along with the irresistible

aroma of fresh chocolate and homemade ice cream, transports you back to childhood wonder. Every product, from our handcrafted chocolates to our small-batch ice creams, is still created with the same passion and care that began in 1955.

Lifestyle: What does Reimer’s represent for locals?

Rob: For many, Reimer's isn’t just a candy shop—it’s a piece of local history. Families have been coming here for decades, with generations growing up on their famous treats. It’s the place where childhood memories are made—whether that’s picking out your first truffle, savoring a scoop of ice cream on a hot summer day, or watching your children experience that same magic. The nostalgia that fills the air at Reimer's is as sweet as the chocolates we sell.

Lifestyle: Could you tell us about some of your unique items?

Rob: Our artisan truffles are meticulously handcrafted in a delightful array of flavors that blend both classic and innovative combinations. Reimer’s ice cream is known for its rich, creamy texture, and is crafted in small batches using a gelato machine and only the freshest high-quality ingredients.

Among our most cherished offerings is our Christmas stollen bread, a traditional German delicacy. This festive bread is filled with a medley of dried fruits, nuts, and a hint of marzipan, all enveloped in a soft, aromatic dough. It embodies the spirit of the season, finished with a generous dusting of powdered sugar. Not only is it visually appealing, but it also serves as a delicious centerpiece for holiday gatherings.

Lifestyle: What’s on the horizon for Reimer’s?

Rob: Currently, we have three storefronts across California, located in Three Rivers, Oakhurst, and Avila Beach. We are exploring unique ways to connect more customers with our products and enhance their experience when visiting our shops. We’d love to see Reimer’s sprinkled throughout California, bringing our beloved treats to even more communities!
