THE BRIEF
BACKGROUND
CONCEPT
This was a 1-day brief set by visiting professionals, DR.ME. The brief consisted of three tasks; to create a vinyl cover, to create an event poster, and lastly, a self directed art piece. The first two tasks were to be completed in pairs, and the final, independently.
Established in 2010, DR.ME, also known as Ryan Doyle (DR), and Mark Edwards (ME), is a creative studio based in Manchester. Their work has been featured in the likes of Grafik, It’s Nice That, Intern Magazine and they have been involved in a broad range of exhibitions across the UK.
Taking inspiration from DR.ME, the following tasks took a collage-like method. The mini projects were addressed one by one, gathering a broad range of research in the small amount of time given. This was then developed in to visual solutions to each task accordingly.

THE BRIEF
RESEARCH
Create vinyl cover for a limited edition 12” mix by Evian Christ called Duga-3.
When listening to the Evian Christ Duga-3 mix, the main sounds, which were identified were; a transmitting signal, a woodpecker tapping or a propellor-like sound. The track had an ambient and eery feel to it. During the research stage, images of these elements were gathered, along with a selection of photographs of the Duga-3 structure itself.
Graphically represent the 10hz tapping sound that makes up the duga-3 transmission. Dimentions: 12” x 12”
DR.ME
It became apparent that the Duga-3 was also (informally) known as the Russian Woodpecker. To highlight the tapping sound as a woodpecker or a propellor, different images of feathers were collected to compare to the wings of a propellor. The images of the Duga-3 had a clear resemblance to the eery nature of the music.

FINAL OUTCOME The final record sleeve combines all three elements - the bird, the propeller and the duga-3 structure. The series of ten bird feathers placed in a circular form represent the continuity of the duga-3 transmitter, but also the reference to the bird and propellor sounds identified in the initial listening of the track. There is a subtle inclusion of the centre of a metal propellor functioning as a bond to tie all of the elements in to one.

RESEARCH
Create a poster for ODONIS ODONIS + Guests Weds 18th April Kraak Gallery
The research process of this task followed a similar structure to the previous record sleeve. Images of the band Odonis Odonis themselves were sourced in order to gain a better understanding of their style. In addition to this, research focused on the different styles of typography and album artwork currently used by the band.
Dimentions: A3 (297 x 420 mm)
DR.ME
The aesththetic of the music and the band themselves generated a basic design platform for the new event poster. The style was punk-like with a bold attitude apparent in their visuals. The typography appeared casual, but still demanded the viewer’s attention. There were also hints of image manipulation in their existing album work. These were all useful elements to take in to consideration for their new event poster.

FINAL OUTCOME Similarly to the first task, the final event poster is made up of a collage of different elements brought together during the research process. The poster features a distorted photograph of Odonis Odonis, with a colourful marble effect overlayed on top. The headline acts are hand-written to match the band’s bold, yet laid back image.
The headline acts are placed into speech bubbles to draw the reader’s attention. Further information about the event is written in a bold, white, capitalised font in contrast with a black background. The poster layout is landscape due to useful feedback from DR.ME, who suggested enlarging the design to take up the whole page, as opposed to the orginal idea of placing it into an old television screen.
The different aspects of this design have been inspired by previous Odonis Odonis artwork. The use of colour ensures the image is eye-catching, and the use of white text on black adds readability for viewers.

THE BRIEF
RESEARCH
THE LOTUS FLOWER
Independently create/draw/design something to no brief and for no reason other than the process of creativity and artistic freedom.
The research for this project formed around personal interests of images saved on to Pinterest or Instagram. There was a strong influence in hand-drawn line illustration. The other research included looking into hand-drawn typography and elegant imagery. This seemed like an appropriate path to take with the theme of ‘creative freedom’.
Meaning creation and rebirth, it was a symbol of the sun, because at nightfall it closes and goes beneath the water and at dawn it climbs up above the water and reopens. It was the only plant to flower and fruit at the same time, as it would emerge as pure white from the depths of the muddy swamp and grow above the water.
The only rules are it must be a 2D physical object and must be 23cm x 16cm. Be Brave.

FINAL OUTCOME This was an intirely personal project, which intended to explore creativity through a process, which was outside of the comfort zone. The final outcome was inspired by intricate patterns, line illustrations and the lotus flower. The three interests are brought together to form an experimental lotus flower illustration. To add a slightly more unusual look, the drawing was scanned in to Photoshop and inverted on to a textured, dark blue background.
