RESEARCH General research in to Hip Hop showed a running theme of the heavy use of black and white. Black and white images of iconic Hip Hop figures such as Afrikaa Bambaataa (bottom right) and also black and white quotes or images of boomboxes and cassette tapes.

RESEARCH - BEER COASTERS During research, it was noted that previous vinyl beer coasters already existed, however none had taken a hand-made or engraved approach. The coasters worked effectively for music and design lovers.

DEVELOPMENT - POSTER DESIGN The poster design took a few weeks to develop properly. The design took a minimalist approach, with attention to detail on the ridges of the records themselves. Many experiements with type and layout were explored. The dates were placed below each record. The artist names and song titles were placed centrally at a really small scale.

DEVELOPMENT -IDENTITY The final identity steered away from the stereotypical Hip Hop graffiti style. ‘KG Luck of the Irish’ was chosen as the logo and main heading typeface. The ‘o’ shape ib the coaster logo was left as a blank space to then be laser cut out to resemble a real vinyl record.
Franchise Bold was used so the dates on the poster and lyrics on the coaster remained prominent and readable. Due to the very limited amount of space in the centre of each record design, the skinny font ‘Dandelion in the Spring’ was used in lowercase to ensure readability. The majority of the design was kept black and white.

FINAL OUTCOME Four coaster designs were produced - one for every decade. They were printed double-sided onto mountboard and engraved to give them the ridge effect of a vinyl record. These coasters included lyrics of their song around the edge of the coaster. The coaster needed to be spun to be read.

EXHIBITION PHOTOS The LCA x LCM exhibition was another success. A range of artists from different practices such as Graphic Design, Fine art, Fashion and Printed Textiles came together to exhibit their work alongside live artists and various bands from Leeds College of Music. This was a great networking opportunity and an ideal way to give out free promotional means. All of the giveaway laser-cut beermats were taken by the end of the night.
