... to Our Jazz Town. Local Beacon team have put together this supplement to highlight some fantastic goings on over the Jazz weekend. Being part of the Brecon community I know first hand what a beautiful place it is. I am proud to have been born here and spend much of my time here. All year round Brecon and the surrounding villages have a well respected music scene, but on the second weekend in August it’s time to up the tempo. Brecon Town comes alive! World class Jazz musicians perform right here in Brecon, some travelling across the globe, others from within the Brecon Beacons. We hope that you will you come to our town to take in the atmosphere, listen to the music, attend the Jazz events, check out the gigs involved in Brecon Fringe, join in the activities, eat the local food, do a bit of retail therapy and if you’ve got time – enjoy the great outdoors. You may be a music lover.You might be a family looking for a day or two away. Or perhaps you just want to explore Brecon when it is at it’s busiest. I can assure you there will be something for everyone over the weekend – come see for yourself. Enjoy our features and articles through this supplement, it really has been great fun putting it all together – we’ve spoken to and met some interesting people: Gena is a local photographer and has a fantastic collection of photos taken over Brecon Jazz from 1984-present; Mike Chappell preformed at the first ever Brecon Jazz so it was lovely to get an insight from him. RECON JAZZ Back for his second year as artist-in-residence at Brecon Jazz is innovative Welsh musician and composer Huw Warren who performs in one of the stand-out festival concerts with his highly acclaimed ensemble Quercus, along with some interesting international collaborations. Quercus play the Chapter Stage at Brecon Cathedral on the festival Sunday, bringing together three of the UK’s most creative and original musicians, Huw, saxophonist and Jazz composer Iain Ballamy, and the voice of BBC Folk Awards ‘Folk Singer of the Year’ June Tabor to create beautiful poignant music that transcends musical genres.Their first release on ECM Records is a live recording that attracted widespread acclaim, with Dave Gelly at the Guardian proclaiming: “The combination proves quite magical…this is one of the most surprising and beautiful pieces of work I have heard in a long time.” Huw will have a busy Sunday in Brecon, also

performing with cutting edge New York drummer Jim Black and rising young Welsh bass star Huw V Williams in one of his collaborations, Wales Meets Brooklyn featuring an eclectic mix of original tunes and improvs in the Castle Hotel.
Huw is also running a Master Class at Christ College on Sunday with highly regarded Italian vocalist Maria Pia de Vito, giving students an insight into various styles of musical accompaniment. Huw also accompanies Maria in his Wales Meets Naples collaboration on Saturday at the Cathedral, with a blend of innovative original music, Neapolitan lyrics, Brazilian music, high energy improvisations and emotional songs that has delighted audiences across the world. Jazz Wise magazine said of the duo: “I honestly can’t remember the last time I saw a live performance in which two artists were so completely attuned to each other.” Festival Director Pablo Janczur said: “As well as being a great performer with the highly anticipated Quercus, Huw brings a depth of knowledge and network of contacts to the Brecon Jazz programme, and his international collaborations are a popular feature on the bill.” This year’s Brecon Jazz festival features a third more gigs than last year, a sprinkling of stellar names, and some leading lights of the Jazz world. Courtney Pine, Django Bates, Jools Holland, Zoe Rahman, Phronesis,

GREAT NEW Book to Celebrate the 30th Brecon Jazz! The Brecon Jazz Story in Photographs by Gena Davies is published by Crooked Window. It reveals, through a local photographer’s eyes, the high-profile festival’s changing character since it began in 1984. It captures internationally-renowned musicians, the much-loved carnival atmosphere and its historic setting. The book is edited by David Moore and designed by Sue Hiley Harris, both Brecon residents. Gena, who took the evocative photographs, was born in 1943, brought up in Pontypridd and moved to Brecon in 1971. A veteran of nationally-broadcast quiz shows including Brain of Britain and Mastermind,
Gena reminisces: ‘I don’t remember many other people taking photographs in the early years. I was asked to take photographs by the festival organisers for publicity.’ Pianist Django Bates in the Bishop’s Garden in 1986 whilst playing in the Iain Ballamy Quartet. He returns for this year’s festival.

she became fascinated in photography. It was with complete disbelief that she heard about plans for a jazz festival. ‘I just couldn’t believe that it was serious,’ she recalls. ‘It didn’t fit in with what I knew of Brecon. I decided to walk into town to see what was going on and took my camera with me.’ She has never looked back. The book will be for sale at £15.00, with a display of Gena’s photographs, in a special Pop-Up Shop and Gallery at 7 Struet, Brecon, 8th – 11th August, 11am – 5pm. Gena recalls: ‘We photographers reckoned that Lionel Hampton would only do a couple of items because he was so old and would leave the rest to other members of the band. He played, more or less, non-stop.’ Lionel Hampton on drums during his 1993 concert in the Market Hall with the Golden Men of Jazz.

Pilgrims BRECON JAZZ & FRINGE AT PILGRIMS TEAROOMS IN THE CATHEDRAL CLOSE
As well as the main Jazz Festival, a local Fringe Festival is held over the weekend, turning it into a four day event kicking off on Thursday 8th August. There are over 30 venues, each independently organising their own events in Brecon Town and the surrounding villages. Gigs, community events, arts and activities are planned: from Blues to Rock, Comedy to Dance and Street Entertainment to Children’s Workshops. Even some Jazz events pop up as part of the Fringe. Most music venues don’t charge for their events. But please do check as some may charge a small fee. Enjoy the Fringe!

had only tuned half the piano – possibly the black notes. This made the piano practically unplayable and we gave up after one number. What has been your most memorable moment on stage at Brecon Jazz? Playing with the Windjammers in the rehearsal room at Theatr Brycheiniog and spotting Diane Golledge the artist in the audience. She has painted quite a few of the musicians at Brecon Jazz, and I asked her to stand up so that I could introduce her to the audience. Why to you think famous world wide artists come to play at Brecon Jazz? It’s the atmosphere, the fact that all the gigs are within walking distance of each other, and the town is so friendly. I remember being in a shop in the town talking to some friends and Jame Moody, the famous American sax player walked past. We tapped the window, and he came into the shop and when he learned we were jazz musicians, he talked with us for about half an hour. Out of all the artists you’ve met at Brecon Jazz, who do you admire most and why? Martin Taylor the guitarist. Martin’s family were evacuated during the war to Ponsticill, which is not far from where I grew up. His mastery of the guitar is breathtaking. He really sounds as if he is playing to a backing track, and every now and then if I watch him I find myself counting his fingers to make sure he doesn’t have ten on each hand! Who would be your ideal guest back to Brecon over Jazz weekend? They can be dead or alive. Sir Edmond Falkiner, the ninth earl of Anmount. Ed was a brilliant sax player, and always great fun to play with, could busk anything, and had a fund of funny stories. Sadly no longer with us. What advice would you give any young musician? Practice, practice, practice, and play as much as you can with other musicians. If you have any interesting stories you’d like to share with us, please do tell. Started off one year with a trio – piano, bass, drums, and by the end of the day we were playing with two saxes, a marching euphonium, a trombone and a clarinet. Everywhere we played, someone would come up and ask if they could sit in, but they never left – a brilliant days jazz.

Relating to Wales, its people, or their language. ... and even then the definition doesn’t really give any inkling of the depth or breadth of what ‘Welsh’ is! The land its self? From sweeping sandy bays to towering cliffs, the rugged beauty of Snowdonia or the unmistakable profile of Pen y Fan. The stillness of Cwm Llwch and Llyn Fan Fawr or the constantly changing patterns of light dancing on the water of Sgwd Gwladus? For some it this is a land of myths and legends, fairies and dragons. The swirling mist around castle walls. Merlyn, Glyndwr and the Mabinogion. The men and women who worked the coal, slate and limestone have done as much as shape the landscape as the sea or our famous weather! The mines and quarries have give us stories of sorrow, hardship, courage and great characters. What sound could be more ‘Welsh’ than songs that came from the workers and the chapel? Then the harp and the pipe, the crwth, whistle and flute. Music is really in the soul of ‘Welsh’. Bards, poets and Eisteddfod, whether in English or Welsh there is a tale to tell. I haven’t even mentioned food yet! Who doesn’t try Cawl, Welsh cakes and Bara Brith when in Wales? t is worth coming back The annual Brecon Jazz and the Fringe Festivals attracts visitors from near and far for an extended weekend of live music in Mid Wales. Many of the festival-goers realise during their visit that there is so much to see and do around Brecon and the surrounding towns and villages that it is worth coming back to the area. Arts and culture are alive and well in Brecon. The town is blessed with a number of high quality art galleries, a theatre on the picturesque canal basin, while the Regimental Museum is a proud nod to the garrison town’s military roots – well worth a look. The award-winning landscapes of the National Park provide a lovely back drop to the festival. Outside of the festival there are lots of places to go for walks, feed the ducks, have coffee and eat icecream. Not to mention the possibility of dragging everyone away from their computers to have a go at some things you might never have tried before. Instructors and guides are ready to introduce you to all sorts of adventures all pitched at what you feel happy doing: canoeing caving, climbing, mountain biking, horse riding and geocaching, to name but a few. There are family attractions and castles and churches and canals to see – so even if it rains you will be entertained.
