Newssfrom

Kirsty Williams Powys County Council has announced they will reduce the number of bin collections from fortnightly to every 3 weeks. I posted this news on my Facebook page this week and received an unprecedented amount of messages from people deeply concerned about the issue. People are very worried this could lead to an increase in fly-tipping and other health related issues in the area. The council claim the change will encourage an uptake of recycling, however, at the same time as they are lowering the number of collections they are also reducing the types of plastics they will collect for recycling. Surely this will lead to an increase in the amount of waste? Either they are encouraging recycling or not. I have written to the portfolio holder to find out. Another big concern for the people of Brecon and Radnorshire at the moment is public toilets. Powys County Council’s closure of a huge number of public conveniences is causing huge problems for its residents, particularly the elderly, people with certain health conditions and of course families with young children. We are very lucky to live in very beautiful area which attracts tourists from all over the world; what kind of a message does it send to them when they see boarded up public toilets? Recently the Welsh Government launched the Public Health Bill, which states that it will place a duty on local authorities to publish strategies for the provision of toilets for public use within their area. I am pleased that the Welsh Government is taking action in this area but I am not convinced that this will do enough to reverse the closures we have seen. I will be doing everything I can to strengthen this provision as it makes its way into law. As ever, if there is anything you would like me to try to help you with, please get in touch. 01874 625739

CHRIS DAVIES MP

News from Chris Davies Your local MP

A little over a month since I was privileged to be elected as your representative in Westminster and it’s been a whirlwind of activity. I will put my election pledge to ‘showcase’ Brecon and Radnorshire at the centre of everything I do at Westminster. When The Prime Minister and Chancellor pulled up chairs next to me in the tea room, both emphasised how much they had enjoyed their visits to our ‘patch’ and both readily accepted invitations to return to see how we can build upon the massive abilities of our youngsters, our entrepreneurs and the warmest welcome extended by the whole community. Westminster is an exciting place. Taking part in the debate about our future in Europe, a vital issue for a constituency so focused upon agriculture and the associated rural network, brings home just how important it is that the voice of Brecon and Radnorshire is heard loud and clear. I am right behind Mr Cameron’s efforts to re-negotiate the terms of our membership of the EU but be assured that I will have the interests of our community very much in mind when reviewing the result of The Prime Minister’s initiative. I now have an office in Westminster (sharing with three other Davieses!), have appointed staff locally and am on the cusp of opening a new office in the centre of the constituency. Vital constituency work is being dealt with and as well as surgeries in Brecon and Llandrindod Wells I have enjoyed visits to constituents from Llanbister down to Ystradgynlais and all stations in between. There is a huge amount to learn and a mountain of work but I am very much aware that I have been given a real opportunity to help those of our friends and neighbours with problems; readers can be assured that if they get in touch they will receive a sympathetic ear and an energetic response. Finally, a huge thank you to you, the people of Brecon and Radnorshire, for vesting your confidence in me. I am so conscious of the honour and the responsibility and will use every ounce of energy to make certain that your support is repaid in full.

Surgery times and other contact details will be published very shortly. In the meantime, if you have any issues you would like to discuss please contact me by way of:

Penpont’s Organic Farmshop Open Peter Corbett is head grower at Penpont and is responsible for its productivity and care. You are very welcome to wander out to the garden and say hello to him and see where all the produce is grown. It is looking particularly stunning at the moment.

If you want to remember what truly fresh vegetables taste like, go and try the produce from Penpont’s Farm Shop. The Farm Shop, running in its 12th year, will be opening up in June for the start of the season. All produce from the farm shop is freshly picked from within Penpont’s historic walled gardens. Currently there are mangetout, spinach, Red Russian kale, chard, rhubarb, salad leaves, beetroot, baby carrots, green garlic & onions and new potatoes. More varieties of vegetables and fruit are coming on in the garden.

Vina Hogg will also be selling bunches of cut flowers ready to put straight into your vases and jugs. She will also make up bouquets to order for special occasions. From Aberhyddant Farm, Paul and Liz Matthew’s organic meat and eggs will also be available along with Brad’s Penpont honey. Penpont’s Greenwood Shop will also be open and you’re welcome to visit and watch Gareth Irwin creating hand made wooden spoons, bowls, stools and chairs. He will also make one-off commissions and is currently making a beautiful Elm dresser.

thirteen hands; a Gold Cup for thoroughbreds; the Usk Stakes for horses that were not thoroughbred and hunter sweepstakes. The course was between the Canal and the River Usk behind where Theatr Brycheiniog is now, although some of the earlier races may have been run to the west of Llanfaes. The meeting was a major social event in the town with special trains bringing punters from all over Wales and England. But the activity was not just in the field. When should you start drawing the state pension? Holding off on drawing your state pension for just one year could make you more than £10,000 better off over the rest of your lifetime. People reaching official retirement age before next April get a 10.4 per cent boost to their future income for each year they put off taking the state pension, which is currently worth £115.95 a week or just over £6,000 a year. If you defer for just one year, that works out at £410 extra annually. If you live for 24 and a half years - an average of the life expectancy of men and women - after starting to draw your state pension you will accrue an extra £10,100.

INDEPENDENT FINANCIAL ADVICE

“Your local source of unbiased advice explained in Plain English” F SAVINGS & INVESTMENTS F RETIREMENT PLANNING F MORTGAGES F INHERITANCE TAX MITIGATION F FAMILY PROTECTION Contact: t: 01874 611911 e: enquiries@beaconifa.co.uk w: beaconifa.co.uk Directly authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority

This income-boosting perk only applies to people who either have already or will hit state pension age before April 2016 - for anyone younger the rewards become much less generous, as the annual top-up falls to 5.8 per cent. But if you are in the right age group and have enough money to live on in the meantime, waiting a bit longer for your state pension could be a simple and painless way of making your retirement more comfortable. Deferring the state pension won’t be suitable for everyone, especially those in seriously poor health. Retirees looking to defer their state pension should always seek the appropriate guidance or advice as deferring could negatively impact on some other welfare benefits whilst people with no other source of income after state pension age would not be able to afford to defer taking it.

New in Town

handmade or found in some obscure place. This makes it the ideal place to find a unique present.

Name of business: Kitty Keane’s Vintage - vintage and handmade craft. Where are you based? North House, St Marys Street, Brecon, LD3 7AA. Why Brecon? I think Brecon is a special place to live and work, the people are friendly and we are so lucky to be surrounded by such beautiful countryside. Why did you decide to open this shop? This shop is a fresh start for me, I’ve always enjoyed being creative and this business allows me to use my creativity and to share the space with other creative people. I have several other creative / vintage businesses who rent space from me which means the shop is forever evolving with new handmade objects and new vintage finds being added every week.

What type of education or experience helped you to open / run / manage this business? Many years of experience running a small business, I don’t think there is any replacement for that. Also learning to knit at my Mother’s knee. I must have been about 5 or 6, I do remember getting very frustrated. And of course my newly acquired furniture painting course. I’ve always dabbled but being trained by people with decades of experience in selling their own brand of painted furniture is invaluable. Describe a typical day in your business? No two days are the same. Some mornings I’m painting by 7am, other days I am out and about looking for stock. I enjoy days when I’m in the shop and I meet the customers and can talk about the products and the people who make them. Any advice to a new business in this area? Do your research and make sure your margins stack up but don’t wait for everything to be perfect or you may never open!

What are some of the challenges you encountered? The building itself has been a challenge, North House is a Grade 2 listed building and hasn’t had much maintenance over the last few years, so I’m constantly painting and repairing. The outside is still a work in progress! What do you wish you had known before you started? The demand from craft’s people / vintage sellers to rent space in Brecon. I’m now expanding into a bigger space within North House. This will also allow me to deliver paint workshops, we supply Grand Illusions Vintage Paint and I’ve recently attended a training day so that I can deliver the workshops. Is this the first business you have launched? Yes on my own, although I ran Country Life and Welsh Flair for many years and have been involved in setting up a partnership in the past. How is this different than the others you have launched? This business is more creative, the shop stocks many one off pieces that have been

Gift to Gurkha Earthquake Appeal and proud nation. “It was, with this in mind, and out of a true sense of the loss and horror that is being suffered by the people of Nepal by the earthquake, not once, but twice, that my partners and I decided, as a firm, to give something back, hence our decision to make a donation to the Appeal.” “We know that this is a drop in the ocean in the help needed to restore and help the people of Nepal, but we felt it was simply the right thing to do.”

FOCUS

BWLCH “Raising the Roof ” Bwlch is a small village situated at the top of a hill mid-way between Abergavenny and Brecon (around 200 metres above sea level) with an approximate population of six hundred residents. It’s easy to get to, straddling the A40 trunk road, and is popular with walkers, cyclists and horse-riders. It boasts a pub, a bunkhouse, a pretty church, a post office/shop with a café, a farm shop and a village hall. However, the hall was very nearly lost to the village in 2012 when the roof was discovered to be unsafe, leaving the village hall committee with no choice but to close down the hall. A fund-raising campaign was immediately launched to reinstate the roof, with one of the highlights being a “Raise the Roof ” evening at Buckland Hall which raised over £2,000. There were also generous donations from individuals and charities. When enough money had been raised, the work on the roof began and the hall was finally ready to reopen in October 2014. Since then, a new inverter heating system has been installed and solar panels have been mounted on the roof with the aim of improving energy efficiency. The interior of the hall has been redecorated and the funding appeal is ongoing in order to update the kitchen and toilets. Many groups use the hall regularly, e.g. the W.I., the Village Choir, Bwlch Bumps and Babies, Hatha Yoga Classes, the Gardening Club, etc. The hall is now also gaining popularity in bookings for private parties.

New Inn Beacons Backpackers, Bwlch, with twelve miles of stunning scenery to enjoy along the way. The walk also incorporates a quiz, with the answers being found along the route and the winning team is the one that has found the most answers. This year’s walk was very successful, although the weather could have been better, and the day finished with prizegiving, sausage and chips and live music at The New Inn Beacons Backpackers in Bwlch. There will be a re-run of the Challenge on Saturday 22 August 2015 and we would encourage local support for the event as all proceeds will be donated to Mountain Rescue.

If you would like us to feature your village in a future issue of the Local Beacon, please give Lynda a call on 07775 898432.

One of the main attractions in Bwlch for walkers is Allt yr Esgair, known locally as “The Allt” which is well worth the steep climb to the summit for the amazing views. “Bwlch with Altitude” is a regular annual walking event which took place in May. It begins at the Star Bunkhouse, Bwlch and the challenge is for teams of up to 4 people to walk from Bwlch, around Llangorse Lake, over The Allt, and finally finishing back at the

Protecting wildlife for the future

Wild in July

Herbert Vaughan wrote in 1926 of being taken to see cloth being dyed near Abergwesyn using the plant in the early 1900s and commented that the tint produced was a “dingy yellow” and that the practice was already almost extinct. Nonetheless this was an important dye in the past and was used with Woad (and later the newfangled Indigo) to produce a green dye. This explains the name “Greenweed” as it was the basis for green dyeing. Other local names included Alleluia, Brummel, Sarrat and Woadwax.

Genista tinctora Vicarage Meadows Brecknock Wild Trust Reserve at Abergwesyn should have a good show of Dyers’ Greenweed by the middle of the month. This small relative of Broom is an important food plant for several rare moths and was used in the past (as its name implies) for colouring cloth.

The Greenweed will be accompanied by a show of several different orchids and a good display of Wood Bitter-vetch and is well worth visiting even if a little remote. See bit.ly/bwtvm for information about the reserve. The Trust needs volunteers to help with Bracken cutting this month. See the dates and locations at bit.ly/bwtevents. John Crellin

Cider- One of the Nation’s favourite summer drinks... Cider- One of the nation’s favourite summer drinks, and one of the most ancient of beverages on these isles. The Styles of cider are very diverse, from traditional, with heavy complex flavour, to pale and light fruity ciders which closely resemble an alchopop. Alcoholic strength can vary from 1.2% to just under 8.5% ABV and with hundreds of different cider apple varieties available to create many different blends there is an almost limitless potential to produce drinks of different styles.

Doing outdoor bars, Malthouse Event Bars get to see what the customer wants and drinks the most. Their most popular drink is cider, mainly on draught, but they do stock a range of bottled cider of varying types to keep up with demand. The demand is clear as Tesco report a 45 per cent increase in sales of bottled cider in the past year. Usually made from the process of fermenting apples, modern fruity and sweet versions have

come flooding onto the market often made from imported apple juice concentrate. If you prefer your cider made from real apples and which tastes of real apples, then try one of these personal favourites:

• Orgasmic cider company- Traditional Cider. Herefordshire based, the apples are grown in their 80 year old organic orchard. A fine cider made with a variety of bitter sharp and bitter sweet apples. • Gwynt Y Ddraig Cider- Orchard Gold. From the award winning Welsh cider connoisseurs, Orchard Gold is a golden medium cider with a refreshing apple aroma. Smooth balanced flavor that has a fresh, crisp sharpness. It’s easy to taste its true traditional oak matured farmhouse cider roots. • Westons Cider- Henry Westons Vintage. Henry Weston began making cider from the bittersweet apples on his farm in Much Marcle, Hereford in 1880. Over one hundred and forty years later and it is still being enjoyed today. News from Priory WI Members of Priory, accompanied by several husbands, spent a most enjoyable day with the Revd Ian Charlesworth and Mr Richard Stockton, aka ‘The Parson and the Publican’. Having listened to one of their lectures last year on the history of various churches and hostelries in Herefordshire, members decided to arrange a visit to an area close to the Welsh border region in the company of the two esteemed gentlemen for their summer outing.

Helen Howe, trip organiser, thanked ‘The Parson and the Publican’ for a wonderful day and also Colin for his exceptional driving skills. Lyne Jones expressed everyone’s gratitude to Helen for arranging a most enjoyable summer outing. Written by Mariane Morgan

St Mary’s Church, Abbeydore, was the first church visited. Revd Charlesworth gave an account of the demise of the Benedictine Abbey in 1536 and how it was partially restored by the Scudamore family the following century. The wall paintings and numerous archaeological artefacts were of great interest to the visitors.

My father’s in my fingers, but my mother’s in my palms. I lift them up and look at them with pleasure – I know my parents made me by my hands. They may have been repelled to separate lands, to separate hemispheres, may sleep with other lovers, but in me they touch where fingers link to palms. “For those unexpected moments in life, when you can make a real difference.”

With nothing left of their togetherness but friends who quarry for their image by a river, at least I know their marriage by my hands. I shape a chapel where a steeple stands. And when I turn it over, my father’s by my fingers, my mother’s by my palms demure before a priest reciting psalms. My body is their marriage register. I re-enact their wedding with my hands. So take me with you, take up the skin’s demands for mirroring in bodies of the future. I’ll bequeath my fingers, if you bequeath your palms. We know our parents make us by our hands. Contributions from local poets are invited. These should be no more than 24 lines in length and accompanied by two or three succinct sentences about the poet. They should please be emailed to breconpoets@yahoo.com and not directly to the Local Beacon.
