News from Roger Williams MP When I was elected in June 2001 there were six community hospitals in Brecon and Radnorshire – Ystradgynlais, Brecon, Bronllys, Builth Wells, Llandrindod Wells and Knighton. I am pleased to say that those six hospitals are still open despite many threats to close some of them. Good community campaigns managed to keep them open. During that time there has been criticism of the community hospitals saying they were very costly in terms of money, resources and staffing. However, the story has now turned full circle and they are seen to provide excellent services and ensure that beds in district general hospitals are freed up as soon as possible. While I am happy that these hospitals provide care and medical treatment close to home for patients who do not need the more acute services, it doesn’t mean that they don’t have to change. While when I was in Ystradgynlais hospital I was pleased to see the community psychiatric unit now being based at

the hospital and a day centre also operating there which means that the older people can have access to medical tests and services while enjoying the facilities of the Canolfan. In Llandrindod Wells a £5.3 million investment will mean more outpatient appointments which will reduce travelling time for patients and expense for the local Health Board. It will ensure that the maternity facilities are upgraded and enhanced. Kirsty and I are so pleased that a new radiotherapy unit has been set up in the MacMillan Renton Cancer Unit in Hereford Hospital. This will mean that patients from Powys will no longer have to travel to Cheltenham for their cancer care, but will have it in Hereford. Once again easier for the patient and cheaper for the Health Board. Liberal Democrats are focusing on mental health issues. For too long mental health has been seen as a Cinderella service in the NHS. Yet 25% of the population will experience a mental health episode every year leading to real concern for themselves and their families and often causing loss of work and income. We are calling for a radical change in the approach to mental health issues. I was very concerned when I visited the acute psychiatric Felindre ward in Bronllys Hospital to find that there had been a cut in the number of beds. This serves the whole of Brecon and Radnorshire and is stretched to breaking point. I am pressing for further resources for mental health in rural areas.

The general election campaign has begun and it is a battle to decide who our country works for We are just four months away from the most significant general election in a generation. On May 7th people will have the opportunity to make a choice between a positive Labour vision putting working people first, dealing with the deficit and protecting our NHS or a Tory plan where only a few at the top succeed and public services are threatened. Fundamentally, it comes down to who we want our country to work for – everyday working people and their families or a privileged few.

Labour and conservative alternatives. Only Labour will use the talents of all to ensure we can succeed together.

The Tory experiment has failed. Their record - on living standards, our children’s prospects, our public services, dealing with our nation’s debts - is one to run from, not run on. The Liberal Democrats have shown they are happy to support the Tories every step of the way. Voting for them will mean five more years of the same. I spend my time listening to people in Brecon and Radnorshire about what they want for our area. I’m going to renew my efforts as I hope to speak to as many local people as possible about Labour’s plans. These include balancing the books as soon as possible, rewarding hard work through an £8 minimum wage and an end to exploitative zerohours contracts, more opportunities for young people, controlling immigration and protecting our public services. I’m passionate about these issues and making sure local people know what Labour’s priorities are. But this is going to be a tough fight which is why I’m asking you to help. If you’re interested in kicking out the Tories and making sure there is a Labour government please contact me and join me in fighting for victory on the streets and doorsteps by speaking to local people about Labour’s offer of hope for the future. Labour’s plan isn’t simply about creating a fairer society; it is about creating a more prosperous one too. In May everyone faces a choice between

Blackbird First Aid Training collapse of the patient when unconscious and not breathing. Correctly delivered CPR can keep the heart in a shock-able state for 10–12 minutes longer. Have you ever wondered what to do when you come across someone who is unconscious and not breathing? Or someone who has suffered a heart attack and is unresponsive? Well at Blackbird GB First Aid Training we teach the ‘Chain of Survival’: Early Access: Call for an ambulance immediately. In some cases people Ignore symptoms or warning signs that may lead to a cardiac arrest. Statistically the elderly often contact their adult offspring rather than contact emergency services. Early CPR: In order to be most effective, CPR (Cardiopulmonary resuscitation – currently 30 x chest compressions to 2 x breaths) should be provided immediately after info@blackbird-gb.co.uk

Early Defibrillation: Early defibrillation using an ‘Automated External Defibrillator’ or AED/Defibrillator is the link in the chain of survival most likely to improve survival of the patient. For example the survival rate reduces by 10 % every minute when a patient in cardiac arrest does not receive defibrillation. However, cardiac arrest patients have a survival rate up to 49% when a defibrillator is used within the first 5 to 7 minutes after the attack Early Advanced care: Early life support and advanced care by paramedics/ hospital staff is another critical link in the chain of survival. “For those unexpected moments in life, when you can make a real difference”

CLAY SHOOTING Woodland Park, Brecon www.wpshoot.co.uk EXPERT TUITION novice to experienced shooters PRACTICE 100-clay automatic layout

For Caroline Evans, landlady, on the door of Drovers Arms, Epynt. Drovers in Breconshire For at least 800 years, black cattle from west Wales were walked to markets in south east England. The cattle were walked all the way under the control of Drovers. In the 19th century, an estimated 30,000 cattle a year trod the drove roads of Breconshire in herds many hundreds strong. The cattle were shod with small metal plates, two on each foot, made and nailed on by local blacksmiths. Farmers in Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire and Cardiganshire would deposit their cattle at gathering points. Drovers then steered the herds along wellknown drove roads heading east. These routes often went over the tops of hills to avoid toll-gates in the valleys; the toll at each gate was around 1s 3d for every score of oxen (Agricultural labourers were paid about 1s 8d) and with toll-gates every 8 miles or so it was worth avoiding them. Along drove roads were stopping places where men and beasts could rest and get refreshments – often at The Drovers Arms. Many of the drove roads can still be followed by footpaths and green lanes using booklets showing the routes. Wild in February

Silene uniflora

Protecting wildlife for the future

Last autumn I was surprised to hear that this flower, seen on a favourite beach, is referred to as “Lady’s petticoat”. But it is a very appropriate name. Common by the sea, it is also found just below the peak of Pen y Fan in July. So the generally agreed name – “Sea Campion” isn’t really very accurate and I like the alternative more.

hedgerows used to be called “Red Bird’s Eye” in Radnorshire and can be seen at most times of year around our lanes. The other red one, Ragged Robin, is common in our wet meadows. Bladder Campion can occasionally be found in Brecknock and is very similar to the Sea Campion that is difficult to get to. This used to have names like “Billy Busters” and “White Cock Robin”.

Once there were many different local names for our wild-flowers which are rapidly becoming lost. The common Red Campion of our

Plans to allow annuities to be sold for cash

INDEPENDENT FINANCIAL ADVICE

Retired workers could be given the right to sell their pensions under plans floated by the pensions minister Steve Webb.

“Your local source of unbiased advice explained in Plain English”

From April, working people will be able to cash in their pension savings for a lump sum when they retire.

F SAVINGS & INVESTMENTS F RETIREMENT PLANNING F MORTGAGES

Mr Webb said he wanted to extend this to existing pensioners who have already purchased an annuity with their retirement savings.

F INHERITANCE TAX MITIGATION F FAMILY PROTECTION

His plans would allow pensioners, if they wanted, to sell the annuities they had been required to buy under the old rules to the highest bidder. This would provide the pensioner with a lump sum to spend on what they liked, and could be used alongside other pensions they have accumulated.

Contact: t: 01874 611911 e: enquiries@beaconifa.co.uk w: beaconifa.co.uk Directly authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority

An annuity provides a guaranteed retirement income for life and has been the only retirement option for most savers. The level of income that the pensioner receives is based on annuity rates at the time of purchase. Annuity rates have been on the decline for many years, this has made the option of purchasing an annuity less attractive. The current annuity rate for a retiring 65 year old male is 5.2 per cent, this compares to an annuity rate of around 10 per cent for the same aged male who purchased an annuity in the late 1980’s. Simply put a pensioner would now have to live twice as long to receive the same amount of income.

WOOL & STAINFREE CARPETS CORDS & BERBERS, LAMINATE & VINYLS UNDERLAY & FITTINGS CAN BE SUPPLIED

QUALITY VERTICAL, VENETIAN, WOODEN VENETIAN & ROLLER BLINDS

Some market commentators think Mr Webb’s plans are well intentioned but they also suggest there would be logistical issues in setting up a second hand market to sell annuity contracts.

It will be interesting to see whether Mr Webb’s plans are approved by Parliament and if so, how his plans would play out in practise.

Much loved Retreat and Cultural Centre

in the field of folk traditional dances and their background becoming active as a teacher in courses and workshops, passing on this rich heritage to a multitude of people in Germany and England who were eger to get access to it.

Richard and Heike Podger have initiated and run for 17 years a much loved Retreat - and Cultural Centre, featuring a 19 Century attractive large House with timberwork, surrounded by extensive Woodland Gardens and Duck lake, on the hill just outside the historical town of Canterbury in Kent, one mile from Kent and Canterbury University. All the above activities as well as other helpful activities for staying Retreatant guests and mature students took place there, not to forget their enjoyable Chamberchoir, the Dolce Singers and their Orchestra which fitted into the large Room downstairs. Even the weekly Circledancing could be accomodated there, being a vitalising and therapeutic activity, danced in a circle as a symbol of Solidarity, from which they all benefitted so much healthwise. Many ancient folk traditions today still relish these old loved dances, i.e. in Greece, Bulgaria or Rumania, with often simple steps, giving them a notion of our original rituals. We are offered a path of integration, namely the release from isolation into the community and towards a vibrant togetherness. As dancers they can receive the energy flowing from a constantly renewing source by which we feel enriched.

Today Richard and Heike owe this great dancer and teacher their gratitude and thanks. Do come and join them and see for yourselves. Richard and Heike would be pleased to share their rich experience in music, song and dance with new friends in this beautiful part of the UK.

Richard and Heike are grateful for this cultural inheritance passed on to them over hundreds of years and revived by them today and by all the dancers in Europe and indeed worldwide. In 1980 Heike was fortunate to dance with the founder of Circledance, Prof. Bernard Wosien, in Germany and elsewhere, who once had been the lead Ballet dancer in Berlin. He researched much

Candidate for Plaid Cymru

Freddy Greaves

My name is Freddy Greaves and I am proud to be the Plaid Cymru candidate for Brecon and Radnorshire in May’s general election. I was born and raised in the area, attending Gladestry Primary School and Builth Wells High School before graduating from Cambridge with a degree in Geology. After living in London and Tokyo, I have returned to Mid-Wales to raise my own family. I live with my wife Naoko and our two children, Iolo, 4, and Mabli, 2, in Llandrindod Wells. I work for the Local Authority, coordinating the support for all the young people in Powys who are disengaged from education, training and work. This has given me great insight into the social and economic needs of our county. I care deeply about the future of rural Wales, and this is why I am so pleased to have found a party in Plaid Cymru that truly has all of our interests at heart. May’s general election will be the most important for a generation. With the outcome expected to be very close, it is vital that strong voices from Wales are heard in Westminster. While the Liberal Democrats, Conservatives, Labour and UKIP have all committed to spending plans which would cut deeper into public services and support for the most vulnerable, Plaid Cymru firmly rejects the negative policies of austerity. Instead of cutting public services, we will invest in and grow our economy. We demand a stronger, fairer future for Wales. We demand the same deal on funding as Scotland, which would bring £1.2bn extra into Wales every year. We demand that more of the decisions that affect Wales are made here in Wales. We deserve nothing less. Over the next few months I will outline some more of Plaid’s policies, including our plans to strengthen support for small businesses, farmers and rural health care. Now, more than ever it is time for a positive alternative – and I am proud to be that alternative. Please lend me your support, join my campaign, and believe in a better future. Together we can build a fairer, more prosperous and sustainable Wales.

REVIEW

The George a real treat The George Hotel quietly sits between The Struet and the Co-op Car Park so excellent for parking and easy access. With Graham at the helm and Retford Gardner in the Kitchen you are in for a real treat. We went on a Friday evening when the bar was buzzing with people gathering to celebrate the end of the first week back to work after Christmas, and the start of the weekend. Many we noticed later stayed and were having meals in the bar. Throughout the evening, there was a constant buzz of people coming in for drinks and meals which was lovely to see. Our table was in the conservatory, which was warm and cosy while the rain and wind lashed outside, just around the corner from the busy bar area.

“ perfect to accommodate a quiet meal for two or a gathering of friends and family” The waitresses who showed us to our table not only knew the menu but had tasted every item on it, so was able to give us personal recommendations. We choose two starters we would not normally have chosen. Duck spring roll with Plum sauce and peanut pickled vegetables and Duo of Mackerel. Both arrived beautifully presented and were delicious. The selections on Daily Specials and Winter menus would more than satisfy anyone tastes. It was a hard decision but in the end I choose a delicious Chicken breast with dauphinoise potatoes and wild mushroom fricassee and Chris choose the Thai Crab Risotto, crab cakes and chilli, and they both more than lived up to expectation and we would highly recommend . Again we were spoilt for choice for dessert, the

final decision for Chris was Frozen honey parfait, toasted oats, honey comb, blackberries and I had Sticky toffee banoffee pudding, butterscotch sauce and clotted cream. The sticky toffee pudding with the banoffee twist was fabulous and of course I did also “test” the Frozen honey parfait which was very light and refreshing. Graham, who heads the team has many years experience in the hospitality business and is now settling into life at The George Hotel . Four months ago Retford Gardner joined the team and having worked all over the world, brought with him many new and exciting ideas which he has developed over the years. The meat, vegetables, bread and icecream are all sourced locally and since his arrival at The George, Retford has been working with local producers to develop, amoungst other dishes, a Toulouse sausage and some Brioche Buns. The George Hotel also offers a lunchtime menu, which includes a variety of great sandwiches. The staff at The George could not have been more helpful and the layout of the bar with its wooden floor, tables and benches was lovely. We liked the light airy feel of the conservatory restaurant which is just perfect for a quiet meal for two or a gathering of family and friends. We can’t wait to go back and check out the rest of the menu. Lynda Like

New in Town Name of the business? Pilgrims Tea Rooms and Restaurant – It’s a name that may be familiar to many but new to us! Where are you based or which area do you work in? The Tea Rooms is within the Cathedral Close so a really stunning setting; the combination of history and tranquillity is unique in Brecon. Why Brecon? We moved to Brecon over 12 years ago to work at YHA Brecon (Tyn-y-Caeau) and YHA Danywenallt (Talybont). Over the years we have increased our family and made Brecon our home and the children are happily settled at Ysgol y Bannau. Why did you decide to open this shop/ business? We have both spent all our working lives in catering and hospitality. When the YHA decided to close YHA Brecon we knew that whatever this new chapter of our lives held it would be in Brecon with our friends and family. After many years at Pilgrims, Janet Williams decided to retire, the Cathedral began looking for a new concessionaire and we are very happy that they chose us! What are some of challenges you encountered? Well following in Janet’s footsteps is quite challenge! As Pilgrims is an established business with an existing and loyal clientele we had to hit the ground running. In the run up to Christmas it feels at times like we haven’t stopped running! With the New Year we are only now managing to introduce some of ‘our’ ideas – our lovely new barista coffee machine means we can offer soya milk and de-caff coffees across the board, Andy with his love of tea is enjoying the new loose leaf teas and infusion pots and I am rolling out my new range of gluten and dairy free cakes! What do you wish you had known before you started? Just how long it was going to take to open a bank account! 12 weeks in total but we are there now. Is this the first business you have launched? Together yes! Despite having met, dated, married and had a family within YHA … we had not actually worked together until now! Now that has brought all sorts of challenges!

What type of education or experience helped you to open/run/manage this business? It feels like everything we have done over the last 20 years has been building to this point – our own business! It’s no easy option but being in control of our own destiny is exciting! Describe a typical day in your business: Andy is in his element in the kitchen, knocking up a batch of bread rolls, scones and preparing the specials for lunch, maybe sending out a buffet or keeping on top of the toastie orders. For me it’s more about the people, our regulars who are in for their veggie breakfast or favourite window table, the local faces and the visitors to the area. One day a gentleman came in after visiting the Cathedral, his mum had been born a Havard, married in the Cathedral and had lived in Maendu Terrace. His abiding memory of family gatherings with his mum were her Welsh Cakes! Unfortunately she had never written down her recipe. Ours were the closest he had ever found and he left with ours. Several months later we received an email. After some funny moments when he realised I have given him catering sized quantities he perfected his griddle technique and once again the whole family were enjoying Welsh Cakes and remembering happy times with his mum. Each day brings something or someone different and that is very typical! Any advice to new businesses in this area? Go for it! Listen to your customers. Enjoy each day and new challenge!

Conservative Parliamentary Candidate Welcome to my new column in the Local Beacon and may I start by wishing you all good health and happiness for 2015. A New Year always brings with it New Challenges and New Beginnings and this year is no exception. This is also a General Election year and on May 7th I will be a candidate on the ballot paper wishing to represent you in this wonderful constituency of Brecon & Radnorshire. There is a great deal to do before then and I look forward to discussing my plans with you over the next few months. In the meantime there is a great deal going on locally that will affect us all, with changes to the leadership at Powys County Council and difficult financial decisions to be made both there and at the Brecon Beacons National Park Authority. As County Councillor for Glasbury and a Member of the BBNPA, I am currently looking at proposals being put to us relating to the Budgets. Regretfully severe cuts are again inevitable due to the very poor settlement received from the Welsh Assembly Government for the seventh year in succession. This has a knock on effect throughout our area including local primary and secondary schools which as a parent and a Governor concerns me greatly. You can be assured that I will be keeping a very close eye on the forthcoming proposals and will not be afraid to speak out and vote against things which I believe are not in the best interests of the People of Brecon & Radnorshire. I am now on the campaign trail full time and reaching into every part of Brecon & Radnorshire, which is no mean feat as it is the largest constituency in England and Wales. I look forward to seeing you on my rounds but please don’t forget that should you have a matter that needs my attention, don’t hesitate to get in touch. 01874 624796 chris@chrisdavies.org.uk

BRECON Poets: JONATHAN MORGAN Each issue of your Local Beacon now carries a shor t piece by a local poet. This month’s poem is by Jonathan Morgan who was invalided out of the army after serving as a Captain with the Royal Regiment of Wales, including a horrendous tour of Nor thern Ireland. Educated at Christ College, Brecon and Sandhurst, he has taught at Blundell’s in Tiver ton and at the Cardiff Metropolitan University. Jonathan is active in the Brecon Political and Theological Discussion Group and in the Poetry group; his essays on the Welsh War poets The Tragedy of War has recently been published.

Why not become a dementia friend? Nearly all of us have some experience of dementia in our families and circle of friends yet the stigma of dementia remains. About 2,500 people in Powys are living with dementia and this number will only increase in the coming years. Over two-thirds of these people are living in the community. Most say they want to keep going out and use local shops, services and our wealth of leisure, cultural and spiritual resources. But people living with dementia lose confidence in themselves, and worry about how they will manage these day-to-day things that you and I take for granted.

Be My Valentine

So why not join us and become a Dementia Friend? Learn a little bit more about what it’s like to live with dementia and how you can help to make where you live a dementia-friendly community. Each session lasts about an hour. They can be done individually for your group and members, and are run by local volunteer Dementia Friends Champions. The sessions are interactive – and fun! Anyone of any age can be a Dementia Friend and everyone is welcome. In August 2014, Brecon received official ‘Working to become Dementia Friendly’ recognition from Alzheimer’s Society. Brecon is the first community in Wales to achieve this status. We would love to hear from anyone that would like to get involved in whatever capacity to work with us in making Brecon – and all of Powys dementia-friendly. News from local WIs PRIORY W I At the annual meeting in November, Deborah Cogger was elected President for the coming year and Helen Howe Vice President. Lynne Jones will continue as Secretary and Gill Todd, Treasurer. In December, members went to Tipple and Tiffin where they enjoyed an excellent Christmas dinner. After the meal presentations were made. Helen Howe and Mariane Morgan were the joint winners of the year’s competitions. Gifts were given to Marian Carrod for teaching the choir a Welsh carol which was performed at the County Carol Service, to Mariane Morgan for composing an English carol with music and for writing a Christmas poem, both of which were performed at the Carol Service. Jean Evans was also a recipient of a gift for making her home and piano available for rehearsals. The January meeting was held at Kensington Church Hall. Members brought refreshments for a meal. Helen Howe read her poem which was entered for the Lady Denman Cup competition. Lynne Jones, Deborah Cogger and Mariane Morgan also entertained everyone with poetry readings. What a busy Autumn and end of year Powys Brecknock Federation has experienced; there was the enjoyable Harvest Supper where cold meats and salad followed by homemade apple tarts and cream were served by members of the Board of Trustees. Members were entertained by those who had entered the Lady Denman Cup Competition reading out their entries on “What the W I means to me”. For those who wanted ideas on how to produce Christmas Themed Floral Art with a difference, they attended Julie Robinson’s demonstration at The Muse which gave everyone wonderful ideas. The shopping trip this year was to Cheltenham,

arranged by Rose Morris. After a day of intense retail therapy, ladies returned home laden with shopping bags, exhausted but happy. What fun packers had when packing bags at Morrison’s Supermarket. Shoppers were ver y generous with their donations which were much appreciated. Roger Reese was the guest speaker at the Public Affairs Evening at “The Muse” along with Roger Young on the Tallyn Railway and Refresh. Old photographs of the area were circulated during the talk which evoked memories for many of the people present. The White Ribbon Campaign “Not in my Name” was highlighted which asks men to pledge their support to never condone or commit gender based violence against women, white ribbons were given and signatures were collected on the campaign poster. The evening finished with cheese and wine being served. A Bingo evening held at Bishops Meadow in November was well attended, the caller was Gomer Probert. The County Carol Service was held at St. Peter’s Church, Glasbury this year. The service was conducted by the Rev David Thomas. The organist was June Thomas. Priory W I sang a Welsh and an original English Carol and a poem about two donkeys meeting in Nazareth prior to the journey to Bethlehem. Merthyr Cynog W I presented a conversation,’ what a group of women including Mary might have said had they met in Bethlehem at the same time’. Llangynidir W I sang two Carols, the accompanist was Linda Games, Helena Jones recited a Christmas poem that she had written. The Annual Christmas Fair at Bishop Bevan Hall on December 12th was again very well attended. The last event of the year was the serving of non-alcoholic mulled wine and mince pies at the Plough U.R.C. school room, an enjoyable end to a successful year.

TRALLONG & PENPONT NEWS At the recent Annual General meeting the President (Ruth Jefferies), the secretary (Joy Bloss) and the treasurer (Heather Thomas) all agreed to stay in office for a fur ther year, which the members were very pleased to hear. The other offices were agreed upon, so we have members to organise the tea rota and the raffle, programme organisers, a competitions officer and a press correspondent so the Institute should function well in this coming year. Recent speakers have been excellent – Eryl Liddell brought along wonderful pieces of glass sculptures, which she had made including some beautiful and colourful lampshades. Eryl had been introduced to the craft whilst living in Tasmania, and had continued to learn more on her return to Wales. The speaker for the Christmas meeting was a well-guarded secret – we had been told in advance that this person had played for the President at the White House. We were intrigued

when Janet Rees arrived – but it transpired that she had played for our President (Ruth) at the White House in Sennybridge. We had a lovely evening – Janet accompanied us in lots of well-known carols and Christmas songs. At the first meeting of 2015 Alison Noble of Brecon brought along several large photograph albums of the work of Mr. Jack Clark – these had been exhibited in the library some time ago. Alison asked members to study the photographs and try to identify who was in the photographs. They included many baby photos, wedding photos, photos taken at civic events to name but a few. The albums containing photos of the Brecon shops caused a lot of discussion with members giving details of the various occupants over the years. It was sad to note the number of lovely individual privately owned shops which had closed over the years to be replaced by multinationals, charity shops or indeed worse of all remaining empty and falling into decay. Our next meeting is on February 4th at 7 p.m. in Trallong Church Hall – visitors are welcomed with open arms.
