News from

Roger Williams MP Powys County Council dropped a bombshell when it unveiled proposals to amalgamate Gwernyfed High School and Brecon High School in a newly built school situated on the Penlan Campus. This has naturally raised considerable opposition. I have felt that the Powys proposals need to be challenged. I believe that pupils living in Hay will be drawn towards Fairfield High School in the Golden Valley and pupils living in East Radnorshire may wish to attend Lady Hawkins High School in Kington, rather than travel all the way to Brecon. This would mean that the proposed new school would probably not reach the planned 800 pupils, but would be nearer 650. For this reason alone I am fiercely opposed to the Powys proposals. Gwernyfed is a well-managed and rapidly improving school and it would seem educationally naïve to put that in jeopardy. I raised my concerns in a hustings in Brecon High School recently and also said that Powys’ proposal to move Welsh Medium Education to a new school in the Llandrindod-Builth area needs to be thoroughly examined and challenged. Powys County Council are even more vacuous about their proposals for Builth High School and Llandrindod High School. This is causing much uncertainty for parents and pupils planning their secondary education. Let me make my position very clear. I believe that the Council plans are wrong and I will oppose them all the way. Of course we must make sure that our schools at every level are providing the very best education they can, but we must support the very best model that fits the needs of our communities. Education is one of the most fundamentally important parts of government. As a former school inspector and school governor, I know this first-hand. I believe passionately that education is the most powerful tool to create a better future for our children; that everyone has great potential and it is the job of schools and educators to develop that potential in everyone. I am delighted that the Lib Dems introduced the pupil premium, extra money targeted at those children from poorer backgrounds, in England and that my colleague Kirsty Williams AM and the Welsh Liberal Democrats in the Assembly managed to implement the same policy here in Wales.

News from Chris Davies -

Welsh Assembly. They pay no respect to the issue of ‘rurality’ and the problems that can bring. As a parent and as a school governor fighting the proposed plans, reminds why I first decided to enter the political stage. There is so much to do to get our rural voices heard from London, through Cardiff Bay and up to Llandrindod Wells and we need someone now with the energy and enthusiasm coupled with the understanding of what is happening to real people today in this constituency to fight our corner.

By the time you are reading this we will be just a few days away from The General Election – much to everyone’s relief! Over the past two and a half years as a candidate I have spent my time going around Brecon & Radnorshire and seeing just what fabulous people live here and what a wonderful place it is to live. But with the experience of having lived, worked and brought up my family in this constituency I am also well aware of the difficulties we all face.

I have brought Cabinet Ministers to this constituency to not just see what a fabulous place it is, but most importantly to see the difficulties that we all face. So when important decisions are about to be made they will think about rural B&R and will understand the effects those decisions will have upon us. I have already had the influence to bring the Prime Minister to this constituency twice in 9 months and have also welcomed William Hague, The Home Secretary, Lord Chancellor, Agricultural Secretary, Welsh Secretary and many other members of the cabinet and if I am elected on election day it will not stop there.

One such great difficulty that we are facing right now is the schools reorganisation programme which is being forced upon Powys by the Labour

On May 7th we are not just voting for someone to win the election. We are voting for someone who will represent you and everyone else in this constituency in Westminster for the next five years up until 2020. I hope that you will give me the chance to be your representative and help put long forgotten Brecon & Radnorshire back on the map!

Everything has a use for something, some would call me a hoarder. If you could be any animal, what would you be and why? Anything that hibernates! So I can hibernate of course! If you could have any superpower, what would it be? To give people clarity and peace of mind. What is usually your first thought when you wake up? Why is my alarm going off? Just five more minutes then il get up…beep beep beep! What do you usually think about right before falling asleep? The lists I compile during the day which include daily things, work things, goals, inspirations, ambitions and projects - to do lists! Do you believe in ghosts? I believe there is something else out there, not quite found it yet. Most exciting thing you’ve won? An iPad Air, just for being a loyal customer! Two lessons life has taught you? It’s too short to dwell on things. You don’t have to have negative people in your life if it makes you unhappy, whether its friends or family, surround yourself with the people who want to be surrounded by you and make you happy with no dramas. What makes you grumpy? Cold callers. You’re given one million pounds, what do you spend it on? My ideas, plans and goals…some of that would be for good causes too. Have any bad habits? Maybe a bit messy, although organised mess! Also saying yes, it’s not always beneficial

to say yes but I am getting better at saying no! Which bad habits drive you crazy? My bad habits, because they’re mine and I don’t like them! What book would you recommend to others? The Secret by Rhonda Burne. Best present ever received? My fiancé, hes my rock and the best present anyone could ever have! List one thing you wish you could change about yourself: The tiny bit of negativity that sometimes seeps back to stay away, although so far so good. If you could visit anywhere in the world, where would you go? Everywhere, I want to experience as much as possible to inspire me and to enjoy with loved ones, for the memories too. List five goals on your life’s to-do list: To be happy, to be healthy, to travel exciting places, to be able to give something back, to be successful and expand my business in so many ways I cant get them on paper! Name one regret you have: Trusting those who don’t value me as a person. Name one thing you miss about being a kid: Finishing school at 3pm and nothing to do on weekends! Name one thing you love about being an adult: I can do whatever I please, when I please! My goals and dreams will happen because I am an adult and I can make them happen! What’s your favourite song of the moment? Echosmith – Cool Kids. What’s your favourite thing to do on a Sunday afternoon? If no wedding fayres then catching up on jobs and maybe a film or two if not visiting friends and family. What would be your dream job? I have my dream job! If you HAD to change your name, what would you change it to? Ashleigh. Sum yourself up in five words: Caring, determined, stubborn, quirky (Unusual), confident.

Family Mediation

“Family disputes that are resolved through mediation are cheaper, quicker and, according to academic research, less acrimonious than those that are settled through the courts.” National Audit Office

YOURhistory

Bishop’s Meadow

Lunch on the run delivery service!

Have you ever wondered who lived in your house before you, about their professions and their families? Brecon Library has many documents that can reveal the past lives of your home, and a good place to start is the census. Every ten years since 1841, the UK Government has recorded the inhabitants of every English and Welsh home. The first census noted only householders’ names and ages, whether or not they were born in the county, and usually the occupation of the head of household. By 1911 the information gathered was more detailed, and for house or family historians much more useful. Not only can you find names and ages, but also the relationship of each dweller to the head of the house, and how each made a living. Family life is further revealed by how long the couple had been married and their number of children living and dead – so you know how many branches to put on a family tree.

At a time when family finances are often under pressure and have to be divided, mediation is far cheaper and less time consuming than going through the court system.

Call in at Brecon Library where the staff will be glad to assist your research.

Family Mediation can be used in a wide variety of circumstances, for example:

INDEPENDENT FINANCIAL ADVICE

“Your local source of unbiased advice explained in Plain English” F SAVINGS & INVESTMENTS F RETIREMENT PLANNING F MORTGAGES F INHERITANCE TAX MITIGATION F FAMILY PROTECTION

The universal deferred payments scheme emerged out of the Dilnot Commission in 2012. It came up with the idea of everybody being able to delay selling their house unless they had “modest” liquid assets i.e. cash and investments. The scheme would have forced Local Authorities to recoup the ongoing costs of care from the sale of the individual’s home only after their death. The proposed changes were widely welcomed by families who were about to place loved ones into care. With the proposed changes not materialising many people feel that they have been betrayed.

5

4 3

A scheme to allow those who wish to put off selling their home to fund the cost of care will not extend to those with more than £23,250 in savings and investments. This flies in the face of what was first said about the scheme when it was unveiled in 2012. Norman Lamb, the then care minister, said the measures would ensure nobody need face the prospect of selling their home in their lifetime unless they having savings of over £118,000.

Families will have to sell home to fund care

Contact: t: 01874 611911 e: enquiries@beaconifa.co.uk w: beaconifa.co.uk Directly authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority

It now means those with investments that provide them with an income in retirement could be forced to run all these down and reduce the sums they live off — or be faced with selling the home they raised their family in.

W moE hA vE vE D!

Every year, roughly 160,000 people need to go into care homes, and close to half — some 70,000 — pay their own fees, according to research by analyst Laing Buisson. These are known as ‘self funders’. With the £23,250 cap on savings and investments and the average cost of care now topping £28,000 annually we expect to see more “self funders” and more having to sell their family home immediately to fund the cost of long-term care.

Interior designer Tim Ryan was born in Cyprus to Welsh parents, and moved back to Brecon, his parent’s hometown, 10 years ago. Having worked for companies in London, he set up his own practice working between London and Wales in 1986. In 1994 he took time out to revisit his original passion, film design. He was fortunate enough to work on the first James Bond film in 6 years ‘Golden Eye’, an amazing opportunity and one, which he relished. He worked on a further 3 Bond Films, as well as working for the production company EON for more than 6 years, designing their offices and private screening room, as well as the producers home. He went on to be the Creative Director of Harrods Design Studio, but wanted to return to his own design business and live in Brecon, so returned to Wales. Timothy A Ryan Associates offers a wide range of services from Architectural services, several of his associates are fully qualified Architects, through to interior design and the supply and fitting of curtains, blinds, furniture etc. One of his most recent local projects was the re-fit of ‘Rorkes Drift’ previously The Wheatsheaf opposite Brecon Cinema, which is growing into one of the towns hotspots.

Results of this year’s Local Landscapes Photography Competition Thank you to the 100s of entries which were sent in. Yet again, proof of such amazing photographic talent in our area. To judge this year’s competition we had professional photographer Clare Williams, Nicole Williams who is our newest team member and who has a very special artistic flair, and me, Lisa Marie, with a passion for photography and I just wish that I had more time to get out with my own camera! First prize went to Leszek Golombiewski who captured this magical image over Pontsticill Reservoir. Dark Skies events are very popular in our area, with various festivals and sites offering superb chances to see such views. We hope that this image will really bring to light the magnificent area in which we are so lucky to live. This image will be the front cover of our 2016 Local Landscapes Calendar. We started the calendar in the hope visitors would purchase one during their stay, then the following year the calendar would be a reminder and ensure they come back!

2nd: ‘Winter Sunrise at Part rishow Church’ by Paul Mor ris

Second prize went to Paul Morris. The tone of the colours give it a very dramatic feel. This will be the image for December, lifting our spirits during this cold month. Third prize went to Gary Atherton. Great skill would have been needed to capture this image. Colours are vibrant and will be a superb image for the month of May in our Calendar. The results to this competition are now on our Cariads Local Ltd Facebook Page. Be sure to add your comments to the individual images and share with family and friends. We want to hear your views! These, plus 9 other images have now been chosen for our 2016 Local Landscapes Calendar. Out in May. A sneak preview of the calendar will be available on our Facebook Page. Please bear us in mind for the rest of the year when out with your camera. We will be in touch about next year’s competition. Lisa Marie x

Roof Appeal 2015

Top £££ saving tips - for mums & dads

Croeso i / Welcome to

Rising costs are making it more difficult for parents to make ends meet, so the mums and dads at Love Food Hate Waste have got together to share a few of their favourite money saving tips with you.

Opening times: 9am–4.30pm Monday to Saturday

Here’s a selection of the best: • Don’t pay top dollar for baby food, just mash up a bit of your cooked vegetables or meal and freeze in small quantities. • Frozen yogurts with straws/lollipop sticks make a great summertime treat. • Serve breakfast cereals in a mug to reduce the amount of milk and cereal thrown away. • Use an ice-cream scoop to portion mash potato. • Save time by making a batch of sandwiches in advance, wrap them up and freeze. Remember to label them so you know what’s in them! Visit www.lovefoodhatewaste.com for more hints and tips on how to save money (and reduce food waste).

As part of the St Mary’s Church, Brecon, Roof Appeal 2015, a sponsored swim is being undertaken by a team of three (a total age of over 200 years) on behalf of the Tower Café volunteers and the many charities that use their exhibition space. The swim is being carried out during May and June, with the aim of swimming the equivalent of the channel - Dover to Calais = 22 miles, which is 1408 lengths of Brecon Swimming Pool. “I have carried out this challenge about 3 times before on my own to raise money for the charity Aspire which supports people with spinal injuries. During those times I kept going as the aches I felt were nothing compared to those being supported by Aspire. This time I have enslisted the support of two other swimmers. I have to say no training programme has been devised, it is more a case of getting in the pool and keep swimming.” Liz Jones stated. The Café staff will be carrying out a cyclathon in May.

Hay Festival is about discovery, inspiration and entertainment, with more than 600 events over 10 days in a beautiful setting at a magical time of year. Hay Fever is the programme for families and children, with many free activities. There will be a Mess Tent, a Make and Take area and a Hay Fever courtyard. Comedy is paramount this year. Laugh with David O’Doherty, Danny Wallace, Dick and Dom and James Campbell. Tony de Saulles, illustrator of the Horrible Science series, will show kids how to draw all sorts of horrible stuff, while the brilliant Phoenix comic team will run a series of workshops by their top cartoonists over two days, teaching storybuilding skills to youngsters of 7 and up. As always, the range of topics in the adult programme is huge. Kazuo Ishiguro will talk about The Buried Giant, his first new book in a decade, Dan and Peter Snow will discuss the bicentenary of Waterloo, Bear Grylls will amaze us with his derring-do, Nicholas Stern will bring us down to earth with the latest on climate change, and Stephen Fry will again astonish us with his wit and breadth of knowledge. The full programme is online at hayfestival.org where you can book tickets, or ring the box office on 01497 822629. You can become a Friend (£25 for one year) for priority booking, a separate entrance to avoid the queues and regular online newsletters about events throughout the year.

Wines- What to consider before parting with your cash… In Malthouse Bars’ experience of doing outdoor bars, they have discovered that there are two types of people: Wine amateurs and Wine aficionados. These five steps will hopefully educate the novice wine buyer so they can buy a half decent bottle of plonk. 1. Check the rear: First appearance isn’t everything. Front labels can be enticing, but check out the full package before you purchase. Keep an eye out for any stamps of approval such as awards. If you’re looking for a wine to have with a meal then look at the rear label to see what foods the wine is suited to. 2. Age before beauty: Why is the age important? A good year of weather, the better the grape. A good year for grapes means it’s more likely to be a better wine. Do some research into good years for certain types of grapes and regions e.g. Bordeaux, 2005.

Pony Trekking/Riding/Hacking

3. Screw It!: Don’t fall into the trap of thinking a screw cap closure is a sign of a cheap wine. Roughly 8% of wine bottled under cork is cork-tainted or undrinkable.

Spectacular riding into the heart of the Black Mountains. Quality horses and friendly, experienced guides ensure all abilities have an enjoyable day

4. Check your Atlas: Italy, France and Spain are the top three wine producing countries in the world, which tells you they produce some of the best wines. Look at some of the best regions within those countries and you’ll never go far wrong.

Riding Lessons for Children & Adults

5. Don’t be shy: Its really simple, but ask people what their favourite wine is and for a recommendation. Or check online for ratings and recommendations. We hope this snippet of info helped you in some way or has simply just given you some inspiration into investigating more into wine. Visit www.malthousebars.co.uk

(Colan & James Badham) A funeral service is being held in a chuch for a woman who has just passed away. At the end of the service, the pallbearers carrying the casket accidentally bump into a wall jarring the casket. They hear a faint moan. They open the casket and find that the women is actually alive. She lives for 10 more years and then dies. A ceremony is again held at the same church and at the end the pallbearers are again carrying the casket out. As they are walking, the husband calls out, “Watch out for the wall!”.

BRECON Poets: ARTHUR WATSON MAKING LIGHT (On Mortality) Making light, readying myself for air, I inevitably dispose of rotten teeth and thinning hair, Ankles, knees and hips already come apart, Collapsing lungs that wheeze, a failing heart, My much worn coat of memory that’s become a thread, Overabundant flesh where it may be shed, Where strength, shape and beauty are unneeded, Where all sense must go unheeded And where desire no longer lingers, Sight, where I must trust the blind, Speech, when all my words become unkind, Hearing, where only silence will prevail, Smell, where decay will choke and taste fail, Stooped and rickety, shaken by the smallest breeze, I will become a bare tree in a winter field, But touch…ah touch! I love you too much to yield, And cannot let you go without a decent fight, For in my heart a child with bright eyes dances in delight And my lover strokes me tenderly on the darkest night. Contributions from local poets are invited. These should be no more than 24 lines in length and accompanied by two or three succinct sentences about the poet. They should please be emailed to breconpoets@yahoo.com and not directly to the Local Beacon.

News from local WIs Powys Brecknock Federation of W.I’s The annual show was held at Brecon Market Hall on Easter Saturday under the eagle eye of County Chairman, Margery Davies, who ensured that everything went to plan. The previous evening members of various committees, husbands and several husbands of Aberhonddu Angels prepared the hall ready for the show. Doors opened very early the following morning to enable members to bring in their exhibits ready for judging at 10-00am. Cheryl Williams organised the stewarding throughout the day and welcomed all the highly qualified judges when they arrived. By lunch time the judging was over, The Rosebowl was awarded to Llangynidr for the Co-operative display which depicted craft, cookery, and floral items. Llangynidr’s crossstitch W.I cushion was awarded full marks as was the crib. A blue faced Leicester fleece was spun and knitted and the end product was a delightful baby’s crib. Another item in this competition to received full marks was Hay on Wye’s cherry fruit cake. Merthyr Cynog’s floral display won the Brecon Cup, its exciting features ran through the design giving a strong sense of rhythm.

depicting Easter Defynnog and Sennybridge’s entry was pristine and beautiful well worthy of first place. The cookery classes was well supported and of a high standard, the cherry and almond cake was won by Trallong and Penpont, the pizza by Talybont on Usk, and the hot cross buns by Llangasty W.I. The eye catching novelty Easter cake was won by Three Cocks and in the preserves Llangynidr was judged to be the best. Merthyr Cynog gained the most points in home economics and was the overall winner of the day. After the presentations County Chairman, Margery Davies thanked everyone who had helped in any way with the running of the show. With Special thanks to Diane Jackson and her team for the refreshments, local businesses were also thanked for their sponsorship and several had trade stands in the hall. The W.I Show had been deemed to have been a very successful event. Written by Mariane Morgan

Both Llangynidr and Merthyr Cynog will represent the Federation at the Royal Welsh Show’s WI competitions in July. In the craft competitions Llangynidr won the fabric covered picture frame, although small it was perfectly formed. Merthyr Cynog’s rag rug was outstanding for its good density of “ragging”. Aberhonddu was given first prize for the knitted octopus which had been well knitted and the embroidery and stitching was very good. Hay on Wye’s apron and oven gloves were well designed and finished and there was excellent attention to detail. In the Art section the picture was to depict Easter.
