Hello I can proudly announce the safe arrival of Otis Freddie Badham, born on Friday 24th April weighing 8lb 4.5oz. It’s been a bit of a shock going back to the sleepless nights but Otis is worth every minute of deprived sleep. Big sister Cariad and big brother James adore him, they had both been hoping for a boy … although I think they thought he’d be playing footie with them by now. Thank you to everyone for their wishes, cards and gifts.

I certainly do not want my girls or anyone else’s children or grandchildren spending tiring hours on buses when they should be in the classroom. While that issue would not be quite as pressing in Brecon and environs, the principle will be one to which all parents will subscribe, I’m sure.

News from Chris Davies Your local MP It’s always a pleasure to write some copy when Lisa Marie reminds me that deadline is upon us. It’s a particular thrill to write for Local Beacon on this occasion as it offers me my first opportunity to record just how delighted I am to have been elected to represent our area at Westminster. Liz and I are so grateful that electors have placed their trust in me – I assure you that you will have an energetic and noisy champion.Thank you. In most ways, much more important than the General Election to local people is the battle that we face to make certain that our local children are best served as they move into High School. The uncertainty created by Powys County Council’s announcements about possible closures and mergers does nothing to provide our youngsters and their parents with any degree of confidence as to exactly where and how their secondary education will be organised.

Our School Governors and Head Teachers are not ones to be daunted by a challenge. As a Governor at Gwernyfed myself I have already made clear my unequivocal opposition to any changes in the form suggested; I do not apologise for promising to use every ounce of influence that being your Member of Parliament offers to work remove this giant shadow over the future of so much in our community in favour of an arrangement that offers the best possible education and the best facilities for all of those in our area. I have tried to emphasise the positive in my campaign for election. I repeat, we have so much to be positive about and if we all put our shoulder to the educational wheel (and to any number of other wheels as time moves on) we can achieve so much. Chris Davies

CHRIS DAVIES MP

Gwernyfed is a top class school with great staff, producing both excellent academic results and rounded youngsters who act as wonderful ambassadors for the area. By the same token, Brecon High has a long-established reputation for excellence and the school in its present form and all that is good about it must not be sacrificed on what looks at present to be little more than a whim. Not only do our local High Schools tick virtually every educational box, they form one of the cornerstones of our communities with pupils playing a big part in local sport, culture and voluntary initiatives. The creation of a ‘super school’ may have superficial attractions but one of the beauties of education in our area is that our children benefit from the personal touch of great and caring teachers.To sacrifice this in favour of a ‘behemoth’ school is something that we will all need to be convinced of before we accept any dictat from County Hall or Cardiff Bay. I am determined that my two daughters will go to Gwernyfed when they leave Hay Primary School;

Surgery times and other contact details will be published very shortly. In the meantime, if you have any issues you would like to discuss please contact me by way of:

News from

Kirsty Williams The election results earlier this month were obviously a great disappointment to me and the thousands of people across the country who campaigned for the Liberal Democrats.Whilst we will spend some time analysing the results and reconnecting with those people who felt they couldn’t support us this time, I want to first offer my own personal thanks to my friend Roger Williams. Roger was the MP for Brecon and Radnorshire for fourteen years, and was an excellent and faithful servant to this constituency, putting local people first and standing up for us in Westminster. Whilst Roger may no longer be an MP, I can assure you that he will be continuing to fight alongside me to stand up for local services and for the best interests of local people. He and I will continue to work together to fight the school closure plans that the Council is continuing to push ahead with. The confusion and uncertainty that this is causing parents, teachers but most importantly the pupils, is completely unacceptable. These plans are ill thought through and the Council must think again. Roger’s legacy as our MP is a great one.Thousands and thousands of people have been helped by him, with the amazing support of his staff both in Brecon and London. In Westminster, he fought tooth and nail for local farmers and battled to set up the supermarkets ombudsman trying to get a fair price for local produce. He voted to raise the tax threshold, give pensioners a fair deal and make sure our poorest pupils get the extra funding they need to get the best start in life. All these things were worth going into government for and have made a real difference to so many people’s lives. I want to say thank you to all those people who supported Roger and other Welsh Liberal Democrat candidates across the Country. Since 7th May, I’ve been overwhelmed by the messages of support that both Roger and I have received, and been motivated by the number of people who have offered to help and join our Party. Whether it is because they want to fight to protect the Human Rights Act, because they are passionate about arguing that we stay in the EU during any referendum campaign, or if it is because they think that Britain now, more than ever, needs a Liberal voice in our politics.

Sir John Merbury - Steward of the Lordship of Brecon stands at the top of the bailey and gazed across the Usk.The voices of the farmers rise on the clear air as they make their way over the bridge and through the town gates to set up their market stalls. Sir John pulls his cape closer round his shoulders, the bells of St John’s Priory ring out and the blacksmith’s hammer strikes in the forge below.

Hearty breakfast tips from LFHW

The Giddy

Many of us don’t eat breakfast and say lack of time is the main reason. However, these quick and easy tips will help all busy families survive the morning rush, and save money at the same time:

Pig

If you’ve bought fruit on offer and have more than you’ll eat immediately – like berries – try storing a punnet in the freezer ready to use a handful at a time in smoothies. Simply blitz from frozen. Bananas can also be frozen if they get too ripe or brown –peel before freezing and blend frozen with milk for a delicious healthy milkshake. Why not mash ripe bananas and spread on toast with a sprinkling of cinnamon, or chop and stir into porridge as a natural sweetener. Why not make a tasty batch of homemade muesli by combining porridge oats, nuts, seeds and dried fruit? Add grated apple and serve with milk or any plain or flavoured yoghurt that might need using up. Marching Through Brecon On 20th June there will be a pageant in Brecon to mark the 600th anniversary of the Battle of Agincourt. The battle took place on 25th October 1415 but the men who fought with Henry V had gathered months earlier. In June 1415, 10 men-at-arms, 13 mounted archers and 146 foot archers from Brecknock set off for the Solent on their way to France. One of these was Dafydd ap Llewelyn ap Hywel, known as Dafydd Gam, who was a long-time supporter of Henry V. Dafydd was killed during the Battle of Agincourt and is said to be the inspiration for Shakespeare’s Davy Gam and possibly Fluellen in Henry V. Another Welshman who died at Agincourt was Sir RogerVaughan of Bredwardine. He is commemorated in a stained glass window in Brecon Cathedral. His son also Roger lived at Tretower Court. An exhibition telling the story of the Welshmen who fought at the Battle of Agincourt will be in St Mary’s Church, Brecon 16th – 22nd June. What the election result means for your finances

INDEPENDENT FINANCIAL ADVICE

“Your local source of unbiased advice explained in Plain English”

While most people were braced for days, if not weeks, of political intrigue and plotting, the decisive Conservative election victory put an end to the uncertainty. But what does this mean for your money?

F SAVINGS & INVESTMENTS F RETIREMENT PLANNING

Personal Allowances - David Cameron promised to raise the personal allowance – the amount of income an individual can earn each year without paying income tax – from £10,600 today to £12,500 by 2020, a tax cut for about 30m people.

F MORTGAGES F INHERITANCE TAX MITIGATION F FAMILY PROTECTION Contact: t: 01874 611911 e: enquiries@beaconifa.co.uk w: beaconifa.co.uk

The level at which taxpayers will be caught by the 40% tax trap will increase from £42,385 today, to £50,000, again by 2020.

Directly authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority

Five-Year “Tax Lock” - There will be no increase to VAT, income tax or national insurances rates over the next five years under a “tax lock” pledge, with plans to introduce the new legislation within the first 100 days of the new parliament. Critics point out that legislation could be overturned under emergency measures to cut the deficit. Tax-Free Savings Allowance - A new “personal savings allowance” will let savers earn £1,000 of interest each year without paying tax. With interest rates at rock bottom this allowance has the same effect as holding roughly £30,000 in a cash ISA. Older People - The so-called “triple lock” on the state pension – this is, the pledge to raise it by inflation, wage growth or 2.5% every year, whichever is highest – will stay in force. It will be interesting to see how many of these commitments the Conservatives have stuck to by the end of this parliament. – Tom Russell – Director of Beacon IFA Ltd

New in Town

Describe a typical day in your business: Every day is different and brings different challenges, from rodents in attics to wasps in bird boxes. In pest control, we treat so many different species that no two days are the same. The challenge is dealing with every different scenario correctly. The customer is often very upset with whichever pest problem they have, and are very glad to see me arrive. Any advice to new businesses in this area? Be prepared to work hard and treat your customers with respect, because without them, you haven’t a business.

Name of the business? Beacons Pest Control. Where are you based or which area do you work in? We are based in Defynnog, just outside Sennybridge. We cover Brecon, Crickhowell, Talgerth, Llandrindod, Ystradgynlais, Llandovery and all surrounding villages. Having worked for Powys County Council for 36 years covering these areas, we have an excellent geographical knowledge of the areas. Why Brecon and why did you decide to open this shop/business? Due to local government cut backs, my post with Powys County Council was made redundant. Lots of friends, work colleagues and previous customers, strongly encouraged me to start my own business. I have been a pest control officer for 17 years dealing with members of the public and thoroughly enjoy the challenges the job provides. There is enormous job satisfaction in solving the various problems we encounter and the relief and gratitude of the customer when the job is completed is immense. You would not believe how frightening a small creature can be to a large human being.

BEACONS PEST CONTROL 17 YEARS EXPERIENCE WITH POWYS COUNTY COUNCIL RSPH QUALIFIED AND FULLY INSURED MEMBER OF NPTA

What are some of the challenges you’ve encountered? The amount of paperwork involved and finding the right places to advertise and promote the business. Is this the first business you have launched? Yes it is. What type of education or experience helped you to open/run/manage this business? Having been qualified as a pest control officer for 17 years, and regularly attended refresher courses, I am very experienced at my job. I also worked in the council housing repair department as a carpenter for 19 years, so am able to solve structural problems where vermin access buildings. I’m a member of the NPTA, have a RSPH qualification, I’m fully insured and CRB checked.

Orchestra goes from Agincourt to Hollywood After March’s hugely successful Tchaikovsky concer t, Brecknock Sinfonia finish their season in lighter mood with a selection of music from the cinema. The main work brings together film, Brecon’s history and classical music in William Walton’s suite for Olivier’s 1944 film of Shakespeare’s ‘Henry V’. From the jovial scenes at the Globe and the touching death of Falstaff to the nerve-tingling charge of the French cavalry, this is music for both the classical purist and casual listener. Similarly the Adagietto from Mahler’s Fifth Symphony, used by Visconti to accompany his stunning images of dawn over the lagoon in ‘Death in Venice’, is breathtaking music in its own right. Less well known but becoming ever more appreciated is the work of Erich Korngold. This child prodigy fled from Hitler to America and turned his skills to the emerging talkies of Hollywood and especially the swashbuckling adventures of Errol Flynn in ‘The Sea Hawk’. This 1940 film of the Elizabethan privateers’ resistance to the Spanish had a propaganda message for the British defiance of the Luftwaffe, and Korngold’s lush romantic score suppor ts this. More traditional film music is represented too. The orchestral suites from Cole Por ter’s ‘Kiss Me Kate’ and Richard Rodgers’ ‘Sound of Music’ present some much loved melodies, and the music from ‘Lord of the Rings’ and ‘Schindler’s List’ brings the programme well up to date. Michael Bell conducts and presents the evening with Laurence Kempton leading the full symphony orchestra. “We’re so lucky to have these wonderful concer ts on our doorstep”, and “I never knew they were this good” were some of the tributes paid at the last concer t. Join Brecknock Sinfonia’s growing audience at Brecon Cathedral on Saturday June 13th at 7.30 pm. Tickets are for sale at the door, £12 for adults, free for under 16s.

opposite to the old school, it was used for many years as the school canteen. In 2012 it was reopened to great acclaim after a major refurbishment. With it’s ample car parking area, disabled access & modern kitchen, it now boasts facilities second to none. It is used on a regular basis by many groups such as the WI,Table tennis group, Art and craft group, Camera club, Film club and Short mat bowls club, beside annual events like the Poultry whist drive, Harvest supper and Summer fayre. There are numerous other events held here and it is especially popular for private parties.

FOCUS

TRALLONG “We’ll keep a welcome in the hillside” Trallong (Trallwng), is a small rural village approximately 5 miles west of Brecon, overlooking the Usk valley and forms part of the northern boundary of the Brecon Beacon’s National Park. It’s elevated, southerly aspect, makes for the most stunning views towards Pen Y Fan, as you can see from the photograph. The Community of around 360 inhabitants, is scattered over an area of about 5,906 hectares. In common with many other small villages, both the school and post office have closed in the last 35 yrs, but St. David’s Church and it’s hall still remain, providing a nucleus for village life.

Note our “Green “ credentials, generating electricity from the Solar P.V. panels on the roof! The well respected Trallong Eisteddfod and very successful Trallong Ladies choir, although sadly, for various reasons are now based outside the village, both began life here and still keep their title of origin. Trallong still retains much of its strong Community spirit. It is a very welcoming place, renowned for it’s hospitality. Those in the know will tell you that whatever event you attend, there will always be a friendly atmosphere and a plentiful supply of delicious food on offer. Hope to see you soon!

The beauty of our Church is in it’s simplicity. Built in the 13th century, it fell into disrepair and was extensively rebuilt in 1861. At that time, an Ogham stone was discovered being used as a lintel for one of the windows and is now displayed for all to see, on the right hand wall, just inside the Church doorway. This ancient Celtic artefact, together with the sub circular Churchyard wall, points to the existence of even earlier forms of Christian worship on this site. Today’s grade 2 listed Church, is relatively well maintained, having had a new slate roof in 2001 with support from the Heritage lottery fund. According to the Welsh Academy “Encyclopaedia of Wales,” Philip Powell who was hanged at Tyburn for his Roman Catholic faith, came from Trallong. These days we are much more civilised and welcome anyone wishing to join us in Sunday worship, whatever their religious denomination!! The Church Hall was built in 1936, on Glebe land at a cost of £875-10s and funded by the Churches ofTrallong and Penpont, together with loans from the Church Authorities and also donations from Parishioners. REVIEW

A very happy little lady

Brecon Tel: 07714 216065

DOG WALKING - We walk your dog from home when you are unable to.

BRECON

DOG HOME BOARDING – We board your dog in our home. CAT FEEDING – Your cat stays at your home where it has its home comforts.

Believe it or not this is the same dog really. Maisy is our family 13 year old Wired Hair Fox Terrier who does not like having her photograph taken! This morning she was a ball of hair and looked 4 inches fatter and 4 inches shorter. Now after a lovely time with Les Gore at Short Bark and Sides, we have a very trim, sweet smelling little lady who seems to have lost those extra inches from everywhere. If only my trip to the hairdresser could have the same effect on my figure. Maisy has sensitive skin so needs shampoo suitable for sensitive skin, she also has warts that need avoiding and we prefer her not to have the traditional fox terrier beard as it gets very messy. All this information was duly noted by Les and taken in his stride and clearly dealt with as when we picked up Maisy, not only did she look fabulous she was also a very happy little lady. Short Bark and Sides is based about a mile outside Brecon in a purpose built grooming parlour, which is light airy and secure for your favourite pooch, there is ample parking and so it is easy to get to and drop off your dog. Brecon Mothers’ Union Time goes on and it is now 127 years since Brecon Branch was formed. Their aims are still the same: Suppor ting marriage, families and family life both through the Diocese and Mary Sumner House in London. “It is a help to know that any money sent to help projects abroad is always sent through M. U. workers so we know that it will go directly to where it is needed.” “We take part in the Wave of Prayer. With over 4 million members in more than 80 countries it means that on any day, at any time, somewhere a Branch is praying for other members and world peace.” Lesley Walker RADRTS, AIDTA

www.ribbons.org.uk T: 01874 623219

At Swansea and Brecon Diocese they have 1,069 members. They support Safe Houses, Family Centres, Holidays for disadvantaged families, Wedding Fayres and issue Baptism and Marriage Guides. In 2014 Freshers’ Week at Swansea University was attended and members gave out mugs and cookery books to students and chatted with them- many of them away from home for the first time. Mothers’ Union will attend again this year.

So their interests and those we try to help are very varied. If you would like to join them, they meet on the first Wednesday of the month at 2pm. in the Queen’s Room at The Diocesan Centre in Brecon. There is usually a speaker, a short time of prayer and lots of chat over tea and biscuits. You will be given a very warm welcome. A copy of our programme is on display in both Brecon Cathedral and St. Mary’s Church in the centre of Town. To end with a quotation from their Worldwide Leader : “Be kinder than necessary, or that you feel you need to be. Everyone is fighting some sor t of battle”

Wild in June

Protecting wildlife for the future occur but are the mainstays of our summer display. Hemlock does occur in wetter corners and the true Carrot can also be found occasionally as can wild Parsnip with similar but yellow flowers. Sweet Cicely is found in the eastern Black Mountains valleys.

Chaerophyllum Temulum There has been a good display of our native wildflowers on road verges for some time now. June is the time for Rough Chervil (pictured) to take over representing the Carrot Family from Cow Parsley which has been decorating the roadsides since early May. Later Upright Hedge-parsley will take on the role into the autumn. These are not the only members of the family to

Of course gardeners are not familiar with these flowers as they harvest the root crops long before a flowering stem is sent up in the following year to take advantage of the food stored in the roots. On the 13th June there is a meeting at one of the Brecknock Wildlife Trust’s most botanically rich reserves, Vicarage Meadows. Come along for a display of orchids and the rare and attractive Wood Bitter Vetch. Details are on the website at bit.ly/ bwtevents. John Crellin

Roof Appeal 2015 Times are changing and as a community we have to change with them. St Mary’s Church has moved with the changes that life in the twenty first century has brought, by adapting the way we bring Christianity into our busy every day lives, St Mary’s Church opened it’s doors to the Tower cafe five years ago now, welcoming all denomination, and all ages young and old. And within the five years the cafe has built a good strong customer base of people that come in to the church not just for the food and drink it has to offer thats supplied locally but for the friendly surroundings it has to offer from the spiritual warmth of the building to the friendliness of the staff and cafe helpers. As some people are aware that in these times, as a community we have to help keep buildings like St Mary’s Church in the heart of Brecon town financed, and this is why the staff of St Mary’s church are doing a 12 hour cycle-a-thon through the night on 6th June to help and support the church in

raising money for the roof appeal. As the staff see on a day to day basis what the church has to offer to the Brecon community. “Thank you to Sarah and Martin Browne of SMB Beauty and Fitness, Brecon, for providing the bike for the evening.” If you feel that this is an effort worth supporting then perhaps you would like to sponsor them by making a donation on St Mary’s Just Giving page which is in the process of being set up or via Tower Café at St Mary’s Church, Brecon. “We would like to thank everyone for all their support and all those who visit us at the Tower Café.”

Jokes

by Father & Son

(Colan & James Badham) Visiting his grandparents, a small boy opened the big family Bible. He was fascinated as he fingered through the old pages. Suddenly, something fell out. He picked it up and found that it was an old leaf that had been pressed flat between the pages.

News from local WIs PRIORY W I

TRALLONG & PENPONT NEWS

At the beginning of the April meeting members were very saddened to learn that Pam Jones had died. A minute’s silence was observed.

Trallong & Penpont W.I. have had a number of excellent speakers at recent meetings. In February Frances Isaacs came to show examples of her beautiful quilts. In March our Treasurer Heather had prepared a quiz. April was Short Bowls night under the guidance of three of our members who regularly bowl in Sennybridge.

Congratulations were extended to all who had competed at the W.I. Show, their entries were of a very high standard. The speaker for the evening was Veronica Gibson whose subject title was ‘Inspiration for Art’. She spent some time in Hertfordshire and then moved to Cardiff where she was employed by Welsh National Opera learning three-dimensional skills. Her next career move was to teach art in secondary schools. She now teaches art in workshops, her favourite medium being oils. Veronica’s advice to everyone was ‘paint what you love’. Fiona Rodger proposed the vote of thanks. Lynne Jones won the best hand decorated egg and also the raffle prize. Written by Mariane Morgan

Several members competed in the W.I. Show on Easter Saturday. There was a larger number of members present at the May meeting to hear all about Cheryl Williams’ trip to Canada when she and her husband had travelled right across Canada by train and had then taken a 7-day cruise around Alaska. Our next meeting is on June 3rd at 7pm in Trallong Church Hall when Sally Morris will speak about the excellent work done at Usk House in Brecon. Visitors to this and every meeting are welcomed with open arms.

ON A PHOTOGRAPH OF ERNEST BEVIN AT THE AGE OF FOURTEEN You can see it in his later photos Once you’ve seen it here. Here it’s very clear. His eyes are elsewhere. The young man in his bow tie, His waistcoat and his watch and chain, The orphan boy, Put out to work at the age of ten Already the pose of a statesman. But his eyes are looking beyond that. I wish I could say I was living in the future he is looking at. Contributions from local poets are invited. These should be no more than 24 lines in length and accompanied by two or three succinct sentences about the poet. They should please be emailed to breconpoets@yahoo.com and not directly to the Local Beacon.

Brecknock YFC

YOUR ONE STOP SHOP Since April Brecknock YFC Youth Forum have been extremely busy fundraising. The group of under 18 members organised and ran an under 18’s Dance at the Jubilee Hall, Llanelewedd. The event went very well and members and non-members enjoyed socialising. The Youth Forum are now preparing for their summer camp out which will be part of an exchange they are going to have with Pembrokeshire YFC. Five members of the Youth Forum will be joining Radnor YFC in a trip to Berlin from the 3rd – 6th August. This year Brecknock YFC have put together a small team of members to edit, design and produce their annual Brecknock Beacon. This move will hopefully save the County money on the production of the Year Book. Many local businesses have supported by advertising and the team have been working very hard to make the Beacon a great success. The finished Beacon will be on sale Rally Day. The National Annual Convention proved to be most enjoyable for all who attended. Forty members from Brecknock travelled to Torquay during April to join the thousands of members from across the UK. Good fun was had by all! Sports Day took place this month and included; Ladies netball, mixed hockey, dodge ball and Kwik Cricket. Clubs turned out in force to enjoy a full day of sport with Erwood YFC winning the netball, Pontfaen YFC winning the dodge ball, SennybridgeYFC winning the Kwik Cricket and Troedrhiwdalar YFC winning the hockey. Teams will now go forward to represent the County in the Wales YFC Sports Day on the 21st June 2015. The main focus is now on the annual Rally which will take place on Saturday 6th June 2015; hosted by Llanigon YFC at Dan-y-Comin Farm, Felindre by kind permission of Mr Derek Davies, Miss Cheryl Lloyd and family. The host family and club have been working very hard in preparing the site and look forward to welcoming everyone on Rally Day.
