News from Kirsty Williams AM In December 2013, I was successful in the National Assembly’s ballot to introduce backbench legislation which I decided to use to try and achieve an aim that a legal duty with regard to safe nurse staffing levels should be introduced in Wales. In December 2014 the Bill was formally introduced for the first time.
‘ My ‘More Nurses’ Bill offers Wales the opportunity to lead the way’ My ‘More Nurses’ Bill offers Wales the opportunity to lead the way in being the first country in the UK to establish a legal duty for safe nurse staffing levels. It’s time for a good news story in the Welsh NHS and this bill has to the potential to be just that. Safe nursing levels are a bedrock for effective care. Nurses provide round the clock care for patients,
and work in every kind of healthcare setting. Quite simply, in my opinion, nurse staffing levels are too important not to be covered by law. Nurses with fewer patients to care for, can spend more time with each patient. As a result, they can provide better care. They have more opportunity to identify and address potential problems with a patient’s care, and can play a preventative role rather than simply a reactive one. I have been very grateful for the large amount of support from the public on this matter. I would not have got this far if over 4,500 people hadn’t either signed petitions or written to their AM urging them to back the Bill as it progresses through the Assembly. The hard work starts now as the Bill has to go through 3 different stages of scrutiny. You can follow its progress and sign up to the petition at www.morenurses.org.uk info@blackbird-gb.co.uk

String classics old and new Brecknock Sinfonia’s first concert of 2015 features the orchestra’s outstanding string section in music from the 17th to 20th centuries. The varied programme begins with JS Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto no. 3, probably the most popular of the six. This is Bach at his most relaxed: the first movement is a jaunty dance but the second is a boisterous gallop to the finish. In contrast Albinoni’s famous Adagio offers time for peace and reflection before we hear a Vivaldi concerto for two violins.
“ The first concert of 2015 features the orchestra’s outstanding string section in music from the 17th to 20th centuries.” The orchestra’s leader, Laurence Kempton will be joined again by his gifted son Elliot in the solo parts. Their performance together is keenly anticipated after their brilliant playing of the Bach Double Concerto earlier in 2014. The mood changes with Dvorak’s much loved – and much parodied – Humoresque. The concert concludes with a set of pieces by one of the masters of light music, Leroy Anderson. If you don’t know the names of ‘Blue Tango’ or ‘Jazz Pizzicato’ you’ll certainly recognise the tunes – and no Anderson selection would be complete without ‘The Typewriter’! The genial Michael Bell returns to the podium for the concert, which begins at 7.30pm. Tickets are for sale on the door, price £12 (under 16s free). Make a note now of the dates for the rest of the season: March 21st (including Vaughan Williams’s Greensleeves and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony no. 5) and June 13th (featuring music from the movies).

Postboxes in Brecon Around the town there are many pillar boxes, their design a reminder of when they were installed. The oldest box, although not in use, is located outside Brecknock Museum. It is of the ‘Penfold’ design used between 1866 – 1879. It is painted green as were all boxes until 1874 when they started to be repainted in red. Opposite the Museum, on the corner of Free Street is a Victorian wall box – of a design dating between 1881 – 1904.

The main Post Office in Brecon is now in The CoOp supermarket but it has moved round a number of locations in the town. A reminder of when it was in St Mary’s Street is still there – next to Young’s Carpet Shop there is an old stamp machine casing and a large Georgian pillar box.
Please do not hesitate to contact me on:
As new houses have been built additional post boxes have been erected around the town. The more recent ones have the words ‘Royal Mail’ rather than ‘Post Office’ reflecting changes in the postal service.

All round the town and surrounding villages these functional red boxes are a familiar sight. However they tell their own story and are well worth looking at a little more carefully.

Wild in January
Protecting wildlife for the future
Now is the time to spot Mistletoe. Much of the Mistletoe you will see in our county is growing on Poplar trees but it can be seen also on Hawthorn, Lime, Maple, Rowan and Apple. More rarely, as on the road between Hay and Glasbury, an Ash tree with plants can be found. But the most elusive host is Oak and there is plenty of folklore going back to the Druids attached to that combination. Many medicinal properties were ascribed to the plant in the past – especially if it was cut without the use of iron. Do let Brecknock Wildlife Trust know if you find any on an Oak tree. This plant is a hemi-parasite – it depends on the host tree for the water and minerals that roots in the ground would normally provide but does have its own chlorophyll for photosynthesis. The flowers are not very significant but can be seen from about February if you can get a close look. This fascinating website has pictures of every stage
of Mistletoe growth from seed to plant: bit.ly/ misletoegermination. Brecknock Wildlife Trust have a Winter Bird Walk on 11th January at Llangors Lake. Meet at Ty Mawr Farm, Llangasty. 9.30am - 12.30pm.

Don’t get bitten by the dogs!
INDEPENDENT FINANCIAL ADVICE
“Your local source of unbiased advice explained in Plain English”
In investment terms a dog is a fund that consistently under-performs. To be named and shamed as a “dog fund” returns must be consistently 10 percent below the respective benchmark. Many of these “dog funds” are household names and are found within personal pensions, stocks and shares ISAs and other investments.
F SAVINGS & INVESTMENTS F RETIREMENT PLANNING F MORTGAGES F INHERITANCE TAX MITIGATION F FAMILY PROTECTION
Investors are paying £400m annually in fees to the managers of these “dog funds” in return for lacklustre performance. The top ten worst performing dogs have an average of 1.75 percent in annual management charges which only helps to compound the problem.
Contact: t: 01874 611911 e: enquiries@beaconifa.co.uk w: beaconifa.co.uk Directly authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority
The very worst performers are often quite specialist, but dog funds also include some of the big names. In the Balanced Managed sector, for example, the top fund has returned 64.91% over the last 5 years. The dogs in this sector which include Barclays Growth Portfolio, Henderson Multi Manager Managed and Scottish Friendly Managed have returned –13.83%, –15.77% and –21.05% respectively.
Based Locally between Brecon and Hay
Many of these dogs are wrapped up in investments previously sold by the high-street banks. If not reviewed regularly the overall impact on portfolio performance can be quite shocking. The banks and dog fund managers will blame the prevailing market conditions but it might be fairer to blame excessive charges and poor management.
Marquees for all occasions
For the start of the New Year it may be worth checking whether your investment and pension portfolios contain any dogs.

Fundraising for Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) Women who drink alcohol during pregnancy can deliver babies with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders, which range from mild to severe. They can be behavioral, physical, related to learning, or all of the above. Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) is a severe form. Sufferers may have problems with their vision, hearing, memory, attention span, and abilities to learn and communicate. While the defects vary from one person to another, the damage is often permanent. I became aware of FAS through voluntary work with Kaleidoscope Drug and Alcohol Services in Brecon, which I am a group leader and my voluntary work for UK SMART RECOVERY, with whom I trained to become an online facilitator and a face-to-face facilitator of meetings.
This all became possible because at age 57 my life was a mess because of alcohol and drugs. I’ve been clean and sober for 2 years 3 months with invaluable help and support from Kaleidoscope in Brecon. I saw a story about cancer children and thought how’d I feel if it was one of my grandchildren needing a wig. I had 18” of hair, so decided to try making a difference. Lexy’s Hair Salon donated a chop off ponytail and a beautiful new style by Michelle Lloyd. I raised £165.00 and 18” of hair. Thank you, Sadiya Khatoon.

Llanfihangel Talyllyn
Locals and visitors gather in the pub day and evening to enjoy each other’s company, just chat, share a meal, tea/coffee, glass of wine or a beer or two, Rugby matches, meetings etc.
St Michaels Church at The Head of The Lake
The Community Hall pictured below and left hosts a number of village events throughout the year from Discos to Hoedown to Variety Show, Spring Fayre, The Village Fete in August, Harvest Supper and always welcomes new ideas and faces.
In fact it is a good mile or so to LLangorse Lake, a lovely walk down the dead end lane at the West of the village and across Llanfihangel Talyllyn Common and a couple of fields – When it is dry!! However the Lake nearly came to Llanfihangel in the 19C when the valley was to be flooded to form a huge reservoir. Thank goodness that never happened otherwise this wonderful thriving community village would not be! If you would like to know about the history of the Village, and there is a lot of it, last year saw two major happenings: The publication of “Llanfihangel Talyllyn Past and Present” available from the Church of St Michael and All Angels, and proceeds go towards its upkeep, a booklet packed with facts, anecdotes, maps and pictures.
This year we gave the Kitchen a facelift and a brand new range cooker with 6 hotplates, two ovens and a warming oven for those who wish to hold an event there. To Hire, regular or one off event, phone 01874 658477. Llanfihangel is a Caring and Sharing Village and proud of it! Facebook – “Villages Around Llangorse Lake” for more photos of Village Life and the surrounding Lake area.
The Llyn Syfaddan Local History Group, a Community led initiative. See Facebook – Llyn Syfaddan History Group – for details of the group and events. Another new Community initiative – A Choir arisen from the Variety Show held in Llanfihangel Talyllyn and Llanwern Community Hall last year, has now performed in the Pennorth Chapel and at The Xmas Tree Lighting and Carol evening in our fabulous Pub ….. The Black Cock – run by Denise, Keith and Family, this is the Hub of Village Life, always welcoming, serving a stunning array of delicious food daily throughout the year. There are regular Quiz Nights,

Trallong Eisteddfod 2014 At Trallong Eisteddfod, which was held in December in Sennybridge Primary School, Becca Hiscocks of Heol Senni and Rose Graham of Llangattock won the awards for competitors who, in the opinion of the adjudicators, have the most potential. Becca won the Mrs. Mary Price trophy in the local section and Rose won the miniature chair made and given by Mr. Alec Tompkins in the open Section. The children’s classes were well supported and the standard was high. The evening session was outstanding. The highlight of the evening was the Champion solo competition with attracted seven excellent soloists. This was won for the second year running by Stephanie Harvey-Powell of Penderyn. The choir representing Brecknock YFC was excellent. We are grateful to the conductor and the choristers for their support. The adjudicators, who gave helpful advice and constructive criticism to every competitor, were Mr. Malcolm Bennett, who adjudicated the musical items; Mrs. Elen Rhys of Cardiff who adjudicated the recitation and the senior literary items and Mrs. Mary Hodges of Llanfihangel-Nant-Bran who adjudicated the junior art and literature.
The President for the afternoon session was Mrs. Abigail Hook of Builth Wells and the evening President was Mr. Gwyn Price of Crai – both gave thought provoking addresses and generous donations. Thanks are due to Eirlys and Marjorie for preparing and serving refreshments throughout. We are also indebted to Gwyneth, Eiddwen and Gethin who acted as door stewards. At the end of the evening Mrs. Marilyn Jones, chairman of the committee, proposed an omnibus vote of thanks to everyone who had contributed in any way towards the success of this year’s eisteddfod, making special mention of our loyal competitors and patrons who support us each year. Trallong Eisteddfod committee would like to extend thanks to our wonderful band of helpers who cook Welsh cakes over the Brecon Jazz weekend when the bulk of the money needed to run the eisteddfod is raised. Without the money raised in this way we would be unable to continue to stage this eisteddfod – so important in maintaining local culture in our part of Powys.
The talented accompanists for the day were Miss Bethan Rees of Knighton and Mr. Gareth Wyn Thomas of Capel Hendre. Conductors Mrs. Mary Hodges of Llanfihangel-Nant-Bran, Mrs Annette Thomas of Brecon, Mr. Glyn Powell and Mr. Hywel Phillips (both of Sennybridge) ensured the smooth running of the event.

News from CLAY SHOOTING Brecon Volunteer Woodland Park, Brecon www.wpshoot.co.uk Bureau Paddington Appears at Wacky Winter Fayre! Brecon Volunteer Bureau’s most senior volunteer posed as Paddington Bear to raise awareness of the plight facing this charity in the current financial situation. The message expressed was that volunteering not only helps the local community but also helps the individual to stay active and young at heart. The Winter Fayre was held at The Muse in Glamorgan Street, Brecon on 22nd November and had a variety of stalls selling an eclectic mix of goods. BVB Trustee members manned most of the tables so it was a real ‘in house’ event with home baked goodies, preserves and pickles. The 2015 BVB Calendar was also on sale and there were a selection of raffle prizes to be won. The purpose of the event, apart from having a bit of fun, was to raise cash and awareness for both Brecon and Ystradgynlais volunteer centres which are being given more responsibilities because of recent staff cutbacks in statutory services, without receiving more funds. In fact the voluntary sector is expecting less funding for the coming year. However, The Wacky Fayre raised a very healthy £370 to put in the bank

BRECON Poets: PETER BROOKE This month’s poem is by Peter Brooke, an artist and a writer on art, religion and politics, whose website is www.peterbrooke.org.uk IN WALES Who are ‘we’ that we should own an island or any contiguous territory? ‘I’ seize the land with ‘my’ army, that makes sense, but ‘we’? claiming some sort of natural affinity of blood to this particular soil – we Irish, we Welsh, we native Americans? Who are we? What are we? Are we? The farmer tills the soil but me? Here in this land that isn’t ‘mine’ I am a sort of parody, staring out of my window at the greenery tossing in the wind, with the murderers in the hill above me. I can still see blood on my hands, being, as I am, a continuity, cruelly closing myself in a box of beautiful scenery, listening to the news and then, detached from all responsibility all ownership, thanking the Lord that I am not as other men ...
