Freddy Greaves

Freddy Greaves

- Plaid Cymru

This election is different. So many people have told me that for the first time they will not be voting for one of the ‘traditional’ parties. This is especially true of disheartened ex-Liberal Democrat supporters. I know that people’s values haven’t changed, but the Liberal Democrats have. They have propped up the most destructive government in living memory and committed to further austerity cuts. Plaid Cymru are now the true alternative to the Conservatives in Brecon and Radnorshire. The welfare reforms from London have hit Wales the hardest, with growing povery, debt and use of foodbanks. How did they let this happen? The Lib Dem and Conservative Coalition government underfund Wales by £1.2bn compared to Scotland – this is not fair. Powys gets one of the the largest cuts in a Lib Dem-backed Labour budget from Cardiff – this is not fair. The Lib Dems work with the Conservatives and then tell us there is no alternative - this is NOT fair. As your MP I would fight in the best interests of Brecon and Radnorshire every day. I would fight for a fully integrated National Health & Social Care Service so that treatment is always available where and when it is most needed. I would fight to ensure that money for public contracts is spent locally, boosting our economy. And every day I would fight against austerity. We cannot take another 5 years of cuts. The Institute of Fiscal Studies has shown that Lib Dem, Conservative and Labour policies will all lead to further cuts to the Welsh budget and therefore to our local services. Remember that when they campaign against the closure of high schools - it is their economic policies that are causing it. Plaid Cymru would invest in infrastructure and the economy, creating jobs and balancing the books without punishing the poor or ruining rural Wales. It is more important than ever that we join together and fight for a positive vision for our communities. Together we CAN make a difference. Please contact me, visit our facebook page, and vote for me, the positive alternative, on May 7th. This election is different – it has to be.

Labour: A better plan. A better future. The choice at this election is between the Tories’ failing plan and a better plan for working families with Labour. The Tories’ plan is failing for working people because they think all you need to do is cut taxes for people at the top. They just don’t understand that Britain only does well when working families do well. That’s why Labour’s plan offers a better future for working families here in Brecon and Radnorshire. Labour has a better plan for a better future: investing in our NHS by training an extra 1,000 professional staff, creating better opportunities for the next generation, and cutting tax for 24 million working people through a lower starting rate of tax. The slowest economic recovery in over a hundred years has not only led to a cost-of-living crisis, it has meant the Tories have failed on deficit reduction too. In 2010 the Tories pledged they’d balance the books by 2015. But they are on course to break this promise, with the deficit set to be £75 billion next year. The Tories are now set to borrow £207 billion more than they planned.

Labour will balance the books in a fairer way. None of Labour’s manifesto commitments require extra borrowing. Labour is investing in our Welsh NHS with an additional £500 million over the next two years. Labour will scrap the Bedroom Tax which hits women and the disabled hardest. Labour will make work pay by raising the Minimum Wage to £8 an hour and give tax breaks to firms that pay the Living Wage. Labour will freeze Energy Bills until 2017 so prices can fall but not rise. Labour will give young people hope with a jobs guarantee building on the success of Jobs Growth Wales. Only Labour can beat the Tories. The Lib Dems promised to be a brake on the Tories but they have been too weak to stand up to David Cameron. Matthew Dorrance has a proven track record – delivering a Powys Living Wage, setting up a Food Bank, fighting for better housing.

YOURhistory

Photo Š Harriet Crowther, 1961 Breconshire Local & Family History Society was recently asked to identify where exactly this photograph was taken in 1961. Anyone familiar with Brecon knows immediately that this is the arch leading to Bethel Square off Lion Street, once the site of Bethel Calvinistic Methodist Chapel (now Boots the Chemist). But the man in the trilby underneath the arch was the real subject of the photograph. He was William Seward Burroughs (1914-1997), American novelist, short story writer, essayist, painter and spoken word performer. In the 1960s he was a primary figure of the Beat Generation and a major Postmodernist author. Among Burroughs’ close associates were Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg, both leading figures in the Beat Generation. A second photo, a close-up of Burroughs, became the cover of a seminal recording of a selection of his readings. It shows him leaning against a graffiti-covered wall under the Bethel Square archway. The recording, published in Paris in 1965, was treasured by many contemporary cultural icons such as Mick Jagger, Marianne Faithful and Paul McCartney. So not only was Brecon visited in 1961 by a famed American writer, but a photograph of him inspired the sleeve design of an LP that became an emblem of the Beat Generation. www.blfhs.co.uk Breconshire Local & Family History Society

The pensions revolution and the traps to watch out for

INDEPENDENT FINANCIAL ADVICE

“Your local source of unbiased advice explained in Plain English”

From April 6 savers over the age of 55 with pensions will be given more control over how they choose to manage and spend their retirement pots.

F SAVINGS & INVESTMENTS F RETIREMENT PLANNING F MORTGAGES

Key changes include removing the requirement to buy an annuity – an income for life. It means people can draw money out as and when they wish along the lines of a bank account.

F INHERITANCE TAX MITIGATION F FAMILY PROTECTION Contact: t: 01874 611911 e: enquiries@beaconifa.co.uk w: beaconifa.co.uk

They also have the right to pass on what’s left invested of these life savings to their family when they die – without paying a 55 per cent death tax.

Directly authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority

The new freedoms allow savers to cash in their whole pension pot if they want – but that could land them with an unexpectedly large tax bill. If for example someone cashed in a £50,000 pot, there would an immediate £15,000 tax charge as a 40 per cent tax-payer and £7,500 as a 20 per cent tax-payer.There could also be withdrawal charges.

Brecon Preservation & Construction

Savers who are looking to access their retirement benefits should also be wary of pension fraud. Fraud is already rife in pensions where scammers persuade savers – usually under the age of 55 – to switch pots to risky schemes, charging them huge fees and landing them with hefty tax penalties. But this activity is likely to flourish after April.

• Extensions • Renovations • Bathrooms • Kitchens • Roofing • General Building • Damp & Timber Treatment

The pension revolution is nearly upon us. For most, the increased flexibility will give savers greater choice when drawing their retirement benefits. Savers should just be wary of the hidden traps.

Use Your Loaf From sliced bread to bagels, Love Food Hate Waste has lots of top tips for making the most of all your bakery products. • Sliced breads, pitta breads, crumpets, bagels and hot cross buns are all are great for freezing and can be toasted straight from frozen as and when you like. • Use up leftover croissants and muffins to make a traditional bread and butter pudding with a twist. • To freshen up a day old loaf, hold it very briefly under a running cold tap. Give it a good shake and pop in a hot oven for about 10 minutes; it will be as soft and crusty as freshly baked bread. • Spread the crusts from a loaf with garlic butter, and toast under the grill, cut into fingers and serve for a quick and easy snack. Visit www.lovefoodhatewaste.com for more hints and tips about how to reduce food waste.

REVIEW

Her passion for paint is infectious Chalk Paint TM was developed in 1990 by Annie Sloan, who could not find the paint she wanted for the work she was doing. A chance meeting lead her to develop Chalk Paint TM which is so called because of it beautiful matt finish not because is from made of chalk. Her passion for the paint is infectious. Her stockists are scrutinized to ensure they have the same love and desire to share their knowledge on how to use the paint. In Brecon we are lucky to have Becca Bowker at Ty Cariad who not only sells the paint, brushes and wax but also sells furniture she has painted with Chalk Paint TM paint but she also runs fabulous Chalk Paint TM workshops to share her love of this amazing paint.

techniques to use with Chalk Paint TM, two colour aged look, one colour aged look, cracked look, clear wax and dark wax this all sounds like a foreign language when Becca first starts but quickly it all becomes clear.

I was lucky enough to attend one course on a Sunday afternoon in February I was joined by 2 other students, the maximum number Becca will take is 4 or 6 depending on the day and what help she has available to help her we were supposed to be 4 but one lady had to pull out at the last minute so we were very lucky. The courses Becca run are 3 hours long and held in Ty Cariad in The Bulwark. She starts with an introduction to the paint and how it came about and how versatile it is. The courses cover the essential

We were all given a 2 foot long piece of skirting board and we each painted 1/3 section in three different colours. Over the course of the afternoon we transformed one section with the cracked look, with another section we gave it an aged look and the final section we gave it an different aged look with the dark wax. We were also fortunate enough to be able to work on a French dining chair which Becca was in the process of working on.The final effect was fantastic. We all left the course not only inspired but confident we could each transform items of furniture we had at home and didn’t quite know what to do with. Since then I have even purchased furniture specifically to transform with Chalk Paint TM. For more details and dates for Chalk Paint TM course please contact Becca on 01874 611113. Lynda Like

FOCUS

LLANFRYNACH From Roman Bath House to Ty Bach Llanfrynach Loos.

In Victoria Square the iconic old red telephone box, purchased for £1 from BT, has been restored to its former shining glory and is now a free library where locals can leave books they have read and choose a new one. At the other end of the village, permanent lights now decorate the wonderful oak tree outside the Community Hall. These were lit all over Christmas and are now turned on for special occasions like St David’s Day and Welsh Rugby Victories!

Llanfrynach isn’t exactly ‘on the road to nowhere’ but the main routes of canal, train and road all just miss it. The main A40 by passes the village by a mile. The nearest locks on the canal is Brynich and the closest railway stations were Groesffordd,Talyllyn or Talybont. The absence of any major traffic route either going through or very near Llanfrynach has left the village with a very self-contained, unspoilt feel and the ideal place for walkers and fell runners to start and finish their day.

The Hall is home to various community events throughout the year and there are regular quiz nights at the White Swan with proceeds going to local charities.

It has a great pub, an interesting church with the largest churchyard in Brecon and Radnorshire, a community hall and about 300 residents.

Contact Sue Brook – sue@crofftau.co.uk or 01874 610010.

The Romans, who always knew a good location when they saw it, settled here in grand style. The evidence points to Llanfrynach being the site of one of the wealthiest Roman civilian establishments known in central and northern Wales.

Highlight of the year for many is Llanfrynach Sports and Fete, which is on 11th July. Like many other events this is organised by Llanfrynach and Cantref Community Hall Committee which is always on the look out for enthusiastic members and people to help keep the spirit of this lovely village alive and flourishing.

Like many villages in the Brecon Beacons Llanfrynach used to be largely self-sufficient. The census returns from 1841 to 1891 reveal blacksmiths, carpenters, coopers, dressmakers, tailors, shoemakers or cordwainers (there were 16 of those!), millers, grocers, publicans and butchers, all making a living. Villagers could shop in at least one and sometimes two grocery shops and for a while there were one or two local butchers. There were two public houses, the White Swan and the Victoria Inn. But though community life has changed dramatically over the last few decades, community spirit is alive and well. One of the great village success stories is Ty Bach Llanfrynach Loos. News from Chris Davies the Conservative Parliamentary Candidate

After spending the past two years campaigning right across Brecon & Radnorshire it is hard to believe that the General Election is now only one month away. This month, I have been delighted to invite Senior Cabinet Ministers to the constituency to see the issues that are affecting us and also to listen to the concerns of our residents. These visits included The Secretary of State’s for Wales, Stephen Crabb MP;The Home Secretary,Theresa May MP; The First Secretary of State William Hague MP and the Secretary of State Environment, Food and Rural Affairs LizTruss MP. I asked LizTruss to visit BrecknockYFC and to put pressure on the Labour Welsh Government to reconsider their funding of this fantastic rural youth movement - Funding plans were restored for Wales YFC within 24 hours of her visit to Brecon! It was also a great pleasure to welcome Ed Vaizey MP the Minister for Technology to Brecon and I am delighted that we are now seeing speedy improvements in the installation of Superfast Broadband. For the past fifteen years our constituency has been ‘off the radar’ of any government whether in Westminster or in Cardiff Bay. I am pleased to be able to make the difference and see B&R being put back on the map. I am a long way from finished as there is still so much more to do, so watch this space! As well as campaigning and showing the Westminster Government around our locality, I have been busy working on constituents concerns such as the poor delivery of Powys Home Care; The PCC Sports Centre reorganisation; The campaign to save Llanwrtyd Wells Health Centre and getting ready for the announcement from PCC on their Secondary School re-structuring. So much to keep me busy and a great deal more to do to make much needed improvements in the lives of residents of Brecon & Radnorshire. May I wish you all a very Happy Easter.

News from

Roger Williams MP Maintaining the viability of General Practitioners Surgeries in rural areas is a growing problem. Getting appointments with GPs is increasingly difficult right across the country. Rural practices are often small in size and when a doctor retires or decides to move on they often experience difficulty in recruiting a new GP. The whole of the country is short of GPs and I have pressed the Prime Minister to encourage the Royal College of General Practitioners and the Welsh Deanery to make the job of the GP more attractive and to give special financial incentives for Post Graduate Medical students to opt for the GP route. Recently, I became aware that the medical practice in Builth Wells was thinking of closing the surgery in Llanwrtyd Wells. This, of course, came as a great shock to the people who use the medical centre, because the distance between Llanwrtyd and Builth is around 13 miles and public transport is not always suitable for elderly people or young families. Kirsty Williams and I are working with Powys teaching Health Board, the Builth Wells Medical Practice, local residents and the Town Council to see if we can get a solution to this problem. I am sure that with strong co-operation on all sides a solution can be found. A proposed framework for assessing the sustainability of GP practices is currently going through the Assembly. This framework provides a real opportunity for the people of Llanwrtyd Wells to maintain their practice. Hopefully by the end of June we will know whether this could benefit Llanwrtyd. Powys teaching Health Board have now made a formal offer to the Builth Wells GP practice with regard to extra support they can provide for additional services going forward. Hopefully that extra support along with the Sustainability Fund, which was recently announced by the Welsh Government, will mean that this practice stays in the community.

In the meantime, we need the Welsh Government, Powys teaching Health Board, and the English NHS to put in place support to ensure that no practice is lost due to changes in staffing or other pressures. Our GP practices are the bedrock to our health service and are precious to every community.

Wild in April

Protecting wildlife for the future hence each patch having similar colouring due to vegetative spread. But it does seem that in Dyrysiog enough cross-pollinated seed is produced to create the variation between patches. There are also small clumps of Marsh Marigold and good views and sounds of the Nant Bran (“Crow Stream”) to enjoy. Early Purple Orchids might be found towards the end of the month. There is little problem identifying these – they are early and purple!

Anemone nemorosa April is a good time for woodland walks and Brecknockshire has many to choose from. In Dyrysiog Wood (a Brecknock Wildlife Trust Reserve west of Brecon) you will find many flowers including carpets of Wood Anemones with the patches showing a wide variation in leaf and flower colour. This plant is reported to be rarely fertile –

Now is the time to plan which walks to join in the Talgarth Walking Festival, which starts on 1st May. I will be leading a walk for Brecknock Wildlife Trust up to one of their reserves,Trewalkin Meadow, from Talgarth via the old railway line through Trefecca. We will return via the old route of the A479, now a tranquil lane with botanically rich verges. John Crellin

New in Town Name of the business? Contented Pets Brecon. Where are you based or area you work in? We work from home in Brecon. Why Brecon? Our business is home based and we live in Brecon. We have lived here for about 11 years.

would go for a walk. We walk the dogs whatever the weather! The day would then be spent playing with and grooming the dogs before an afternoon walk. We usually spend the evenings relaxing at home. We also offer dog walking and cat feeding services so this would be part of our routine. Any advice to new businesses in this area? Make sure you do your research before starting up. We had to have a licence from the local authority and also insurance. But if you have an idea then go for it.

Why did you decide to open this shop/ business? Andy was made redundant and after unsuccessfully finding other employment decided to open his own business. We have always been animal lovers and often looked after friends and families dogs while they were on holiday. Someone said to us one day “i don’t know why you don’t charge for this” and that was our lightbulb moment.

DOG WALKING - We walk your dog from home when you are unable to. DOG HOME BOARDING – We board your dog in our home. CAT FEEDING – Your cat stays at your home where it has its home comforts.

What are some of challenges you encountered? Walking in gale force wind and rain is a definite challenge. Dogs still need walking whatever the weather. What do you wish you had known before you started? That it would have been so much fun doing this business. We often have the same dogs staying again and again and its lovely getting to know them and their families. Is this the first business you have launched? Yes. How is this different than the others you have launched? N/A. What type of education or experience helped you to open/run/manage this business? We have always had dogs so used to looking after them. Helen has over 30 years experience of dog training and behaviour. Since being together we have owned 4 dogs and now just have our Border Terrier cross, Cookie, who is 10 years old and really enjoys having doggy friends to stay. Apples & Pears

Marcher Apple Network (MAN) is a local charity founded 21 years ago. MAN was founded for discovering and identifying old varieties of apples and pears found in old traditional orchards, as well as for protecting the gene pool and traditional orchards. It is open to all with an interest in Apples and Pears; there is a wide range of possible skills that can be learnt from orchard skills such as planning, planting, grafting, pruning, pest and disease management, through identification skills, to biodiversity recording and reporting. And also members are encouraged to represent MAN at shows, at local primary schools, and support its administration. MAN has collected varieties from traditional orchards throughout the Welsh Marches and preserved these in its “museum orchards”, four of which are in Powys and two in Herefordshire. Since founding, MAN has “found” or “rediscovered” over 50 varieties, ones had been thought extinct. In total over 250 culinary and dessert local apple varieties have now been identified, and about another 100 are currently being investigated perhaps resulting in more “finds”. MAN attends about a dozen local and regional shows, where they provide the public with information and encouragement for supporting local production of fruit by individuals and communities. MAN offers an identification service recognised to be of regional excellence, ever with the hope of yet more “finds”. Indeed MAN is widely recognised to be one of the most pro-active fruit groups in the UK.

Their work has been given added importance in that Traditional Orchards were recently added to Local Biodiversity Action Plans. The very existence of MAN contributes to maintaining such orchards. It supports members and the public in extending orchard size and varieties, contributing to their preservation and wider benefit of wildlife. For more details check their website www. marcherapple.net for details of their apple tree pruning, grafting and identification workshops/courses.

Brecon Volunteer Bureau threatened with closure Brecon Volunteer Bureau will be sadly closing its doors this Summer if new trustees are not found immediately. The current Trustees have decided not to carry on with the challenge of running a voluntary organisation in times of recession and unless they can find 6 enthusiastic determined people to maintain this valued service by sitting on the Management Board, the service will cease to operate. Countless people will be without the services they currently provide: befriending, shopping, seniors’ social club, charity shops, hospital visits, escorting, supporting other groups and much, much more. Although funding cuts have reduced their income they have successfully made up the difference by fund-raising efforts and small grants, therefore this decision at this time is a huge blow, especially as promotional efforts have increased their profile considerably of late.

BRECON Poets:

Pete’s Carpets

MALLICA REARDON Mallica is 50 years old, lives in Aberdare, is a mum of five children from 6 to 28 and has been visiting Brecon for many years with her children.

POEM FOR SPRING Emergence. A silence falls, the storms have descended and backed away, a gentle breeze has emerged in its place from a howling ferocious wind that seemed so angry and harsh as if to shout its rage at mankind. The sun peeps through, as if a little shy then out of its shell to beam at the world. The clouds, once murky and dense clear, to leave a crystal blue hue. Birdsong is present as they cheep and chatter in excitement at the kindness of mother nature a daffodil rears its head and shouts I’m awake and a bee swooshes and whizzes by in the commotion.
