Welcome

The community magazine encouraging local residents to use what’s on their doorstep

Our October issue – what a struggle getting this one to press. Someone or something decided to play some early tricks on us. First my hard drive failed. After a visit to laptop hospital it returned home with a new Operating System, files still intact but software lost. The worst upset was the loss of thousands of emails. So here is a big apology to any contributors who sent in what’s on listings or free ads – they may not appear in this issue as promised.Would these people please send their entries again if they will be relevant to our November issue. Huge sorry for any inconvenience caused.

News from local W I s PRIORY WI Priory members were delighted that fellow member Deanne Leboff ’s son David, a Londoner, had been able to come to talk about the history of London Underground Railway System. Prior to his speech, the business part of the meeting was held. President Marion Carrod thanked everyone who had contributed towards the Welsh cake stall at Brecon Agricultural Show. Members Heather Parry and Mariane Morgan were involved with the cooking throughout the day. Jean Evans was thanked for hosting the annual Garden Party. She along with Heather Parry and Helen Howe prepared the ‘eats’ for the evening, which were appreciated by everyone who attended. Congratulations were extended to Deanna Leboff whose short story was forwarded for judging for the national Lady Denman Cup competition. The raffle prize, given by Anne Prytherch, was won by Doris Jones.

David Leboff was introduced to everyone by Marion Carrod. His talk was fascinating. There had been a railway boom between 1840 and 1850 and it was decided that an underground railway system should be constructed under the City of London. The first tunnel, the Thames tunnel, was built over 150 years ago. Steam engines were used

“ Steam engines were used to pull the carriages in the beginning” to pull the carriages in the beginning but after 1890 electric lines were assembled. The talk was illustrated with slides. Deborah Cogger thanked David on behalf of everyone. Article by Eleanor Robinson

News from Brecon Bowling Club

Brecon Bowling Club has had a very busy but enjoyable season. It was a privilege to host the Welsh Women’s Senior International Trials at the beginning of August and the Welsh Women’s Double Rinks Semi-Finals at the end of August. The Mid Wales Senior Rinks were won by Brecon who went through to play in the National Finals. The Men’s league team did very well, the ladies not so well; more ladies are needed to boost the side which is in the development stage.

Brecon Bowling Club would like to thank the local businesses who supported them with the match sponsorship scheme and those who gave raffle prizes. It is also very grateful to Local Beacon Magazine for giving us a great deal of exposure; we had a lot of feedback through this. A Captains Charity Fancy Dress Bowling Day was held on 31st August and the proceeds, which amounted to £308.50 will go to British Heart Foundation Cymru.

Wild in October

Protecting wildlife for the future

By the end of this month our remaining House Martins will have headed south. Just where they spend the winter is something of a mystery, although we know much more about Swallows. A hundred years ago a farmer in Natal, South Africa, caught a Swallow in his house and wrote to the London address on its ring. Since then two million Swallows have been ringed in the UK and a great number recaptured by ringers in South Africa where Swallows roost communally in reedbeds. Of nearly four hundred thousand ringed House Martins, a few have been recovered in North Africa but only one further south in Nigeria. House Martins do not form communal roosts and are rarely seen in their winter quarters south of the Sahara. Perhaps they feed high above the rain forests and sleep on the wing. The BTO has fitted tiny geolocators the size of a shirt button to Swifts and Nightingales. These contain an electronic calendar, a clock and a light sensor which measures day length. The device is removed when the

bird returns the following Spring and reveals where it has been. Geolocators might solve the Martin mystery, see www.bto.org/science/migration/tracking-studies. Article by Keith Noble

Dispute Resolution on YOUR Terms

Mediation is an effective way of resolving family, employment, civil and commercial disputes without the delay, cost, stress and uncertainty of court proceedings. Because Mediators help the parties themselves negotiate a settlement on their own terms, they are more satisfied with the results and better able to maintain a working relationship into the future. Amity Mediation is led by Joanne Deveney, a Law Society Accredited Civil and Commercial Mediator, Qualified Family Mediator and Solicitor, with 20 years’ experience of working in dispute resolution. Come and meet Joanne at our new offices at 12 The Bulwark, Brecon to discuss how Amity Mediation can help you. Take ownership of your dispute before your dispute takes over your life. Riddles

by Father & Son

(Colan & James Badham) What travels around the world but stays in one spot? A stamp. There is a fishing trawler, with a ladder in it, leaning against a wall at the harbor. There are 5 oars and 2 fishing nets in the trawler. The distance between two consecutive steps on the ladder is 1 metre. If waves lashing against the wall rise half metre in every half hour, in how much time will 6 steps of the ladder get under the waves? The trawler rises with the waves, so no steps will go under water.

Rachel Podger’s 8th Brecon Baroque

For the eighth successive year, Brecon will be home to some of the world’s finest musicians as musical director Rachel Podger sets the scene for Brecon Baroque Festival’s ‘The Roman Connection,’ four days of outstanding concerts inspired by Classical Rome, the template for intellectual life in the Baroque Age. Highlights include Handel’s great oratorio ‘Theodora’, Bach’s Cantatas & Concertos, an evening with Ensemble Diderot entitled ‘All Roads Lead to Rome’, plus works by Italian greats Corelli, Geminiani and Mossi. The concerts take place in Brecon Cathedral, Theatr Brycheiniog and Christ College Brecon between Friday 25 and Monday 28 October 2013.

“ Four days of outstanding concerts inspired by Classical Rome” Commenting on the 2013 Festival, Rachel said: “This year, my violin has taken me across Europe, North America and Asia as well as in and out of the recording studio and I have been lucky enough to work with some of the world’s finest musicians. It always gives me real pleasure to bring some of them home to my front door on the world, the Brecon Beacons. Shop locally this Christmas Christmas shopping is usually a stressful experience but it really doesn’t need to be. Why not start your Christmas list locally, right here on your doorstep in Brecon? I think you’d be genuinely surprised on what and who you could buy for. Many of the local shops offer very competitive prices, not just competing with shops further afield but also with internet prices. To make it stress free, break up the shopping trip with some tea and cake in a local cafe, or end the day with food and beverage in a local restaurant.

The Rohan Superfine Merino takes full advantage of the incredible properties of nature’s finest technical fabric – it’s very rare and very special. It’s incredibly soft, luxuriously comfortable, high wicking, UV protective and has an uncanny natural resistance to the build up of odour. We think it makes the perfect cold weather base layer. From crew and zip neck tops to necktubes, scarves and hats – A perfect Christmas gift idea to keep your loved ones cosy and warm over the chilly winter months.

A passion for food and quality

A germ of an idea began six or so years ago – should I open a) a candle shop b) a housewares /linen shop or c) a Welsh Food Shop?

Well here I am today with my own Welsh Food Shop (and more) in the heart of Brecon – always the preferred choice because of the year round appeal to visitors and the fact that there hasn’t been a deli in the town for over fifteen years. I have always had a passion for food and quality products – which was the focus for providing a shop which sells the abundance of high quality and often award-winning food stuffs to be found throughout Wales. Market research visiting and sampling the wares at all the major local food festivals, many hours of business mentoring, a small business loan and financial help from the New Enterprise Allowance (because of six months of unemployment), resulted in signing the lease on 6a The Bulwark and opening on 21 August. I have been at times been quite overwhelmed by the support and feedback I have had from locals and visitors and thanks to both FYI: Brecon and Facebook have now got quite a following, regular ‘return’ customers and my loyal lunch club! I make a range of fresh, usually vegetarian/wholefood salads on a daily basis, to take away. No sandwiches, rolls, baguettes or wraps – quite a standing joke now! So what can you find in my shop? I have sourced ALL the products from Wales and use only three distributors – one of whom specialises in Welsh products, and have (at the last count) ten independents supplying on a regular basis. The products include over twelve varieties of cheese

including two goat, four ‘blues’, Caerphilly, Teifi cheese, Buffalo Cheddar (once tried usually purchased). Some of these cheeses you will not find anywhere else in Brecon and several are ‘in the round’ which means my customers can choose how much they need. Other items include a range of loose teas from Abergavenny, Cowboy Pickles,

“ I have been at times been quite overwhelmed by the support and feedback” Welsh Rapeseed Oil (better for you than olive) Cradoc’s Biscuits, artisan breads, savouries, flapjacks and biscuits which are hand-made, and shortly to come a range of gluten free cakes and savouries and confectionary. There is also a range of vegan products, and traditional award winning pies from Newport. I am trialling charcuterie from Gornos, (Cardiff), and am now sourcing Sheep’s milk cheese and several other products which customers have been requesting. I will be re-stocking my supply of Black Mountain Smokery, and am going to be selling alcohol before Christmas. If I have left anything out you must come in and see what I have to offer and maybe taste some chutneys, jams, cheese or anchovies, have a chat about food and how it works to result in a healthier life. (My other passion is Nutritional Therapy) I will be hosting evening events soon and have several producers lined up, the only criteria being bring your own chair and be prepared for an enjoyable and educating evening! The future, well I have plans to expand into the ‘Back Room’ – many requests for a wholefood café (possibly) but I will be stocking a range of kitchenware/ craftsman made food related items. I look forward to seeing you in My Deli soon. Mandy.

James and me entered some home produce into Clifford Show last month: we won first prize for our soft fruit; third for Dolly’s eggs (that’s our pet chicken if you aren’t a regular reader); and we lost out on the heaviest marrow to some much bigger ones. It was great fun entering. We had some shiny coins that are now in our piggy banks. I love pigs, our neighbours have pet pigs ...

We’ve just come back from a trip to London. We went on a tube. People don’t smile much on the tube do they? ... or wave? I did make some people smile though - I did a pig noise. I am having so much fun at nursery. My week is getting very busy so I may not be able to do a column every month. Mummy has asked me to go bi-monthly, I don’t really know what that means. 37th Market On Saturday 2nd November the Rotary Club of Brecon will hold its annual Caledonian Market as always on the first Saturday in November. The first was in 1977 and not a year has been missed since then. It has become quite an institution for many Brecon people and is looked forward to with great anticipation. The floor and tables in the Market Hall are stacked with items such as books, toys, clothes, furniture, other household goods and garden produce all donated by local people for local people to buy at bargain prices. All the proceeds go to supporting charities most of which are local. Members of the club collect all the items in the weeks before the sale. Over the weekend of the Market they are assisted by a large number of enthusiastic volunteers who come back year after year and who are essential to its success. Last year a record ÂŁ10,000 was raised for deserving causes. This year the market will open an hour earlier at 11 a.m.

Every Tuesday at 6.30pm BRECON Bishop Bevan Hall, Lion Street. Every Wednesday at 6.30pm GlaNGRWyNEy Glangrwyney Village Hall, Crickhowell Rd.

Nutty toffee apples

Witchcraft Cocktail

A suitably spooky cocktail perfect for a Halloween celebration. Black vodka and blackberries combine in this gothic punch.

Studded with crunchy nuts, these grown-up toffee apples work well for a Halloween or Bonfire Night party recipe. Ingredients 6 Cox apples 6 small wooden ice lolly sticks 225g/8oz granulated sugar 110ml/4fl oz water 30g/1oz butter 2 tbsp golden syrup 4 tbsp finely chopped mixed nuts Preparation method Push the wooden sticks halfway into the apples at the stalk end. Dissolve the sugar and water in a thick-bottomed pan over a gentle heat. Add the butter and syrup to the mixture and bring to the boil. Continue to boil, without stirring, until the toffee reaches 140C/275F (use a sugar thermometer to measure this). Remove the pan from the heat and gently stir in the nuts. Carefully dip each apple into the toffee, making sure each apple is well coated, and set aside to harden on a baking try lined with non-stick parchment.

Ingredients 25ml/1fl oz black vodka 1 tbsp lemon juice 2 tsp vanilla extract 25ml/1fl oz blackberry liqueur 25ml/1fl oz fresh apple juice To garnish 1 Blackberry Preparation method Place the vodka, lemon juice, vanilla syrup, blackberry liqueur and apple juice into a cocktail shaker filled with ice and shake well. Pour into a cocktail glass. Garnish with a blackberry.

Hallow’een Games Pass the pumpkin

Apple bobbing

You will need:

You will need:

Music

Large bowl or bucket

A hollowed-out pumpkin

Large towel or plastic sheet

Goodies to fill the pumpkin

Apples

A fun way to give pass-the-parcel a Halloween twist, this is played in the same way but you should fill the pumpkin so that each time the music stops whoever has the pumpkin at that time can select a goody from inside.

Towels for drying off

At the very end, when everyone has had a turn, a random lucky winner gets the pumpkin and the remaining goodies left inside.

Make your own toffee apples

Fill your bowl or bucket to 3/4 of its capacity with cold water and place your towel or sheet under the bucket. Put about 4-6 apples in the water and let each child have a turn at getting as many apples as possible - hands must remain firmly behind backs! The easiest way to get the apples involves getting very wet (you need to push the apple all the way to the bottom of the bucket) so have a towel to hand to mop up wet faces!

You will need: Selection of apples, ready pierced with sticks Bowls filled with melted toffee* Hundreds and thousands, chocolate strands or other things to stick on the apples Greaseproof paper to cool the toffee apples on. This is a nice easy one and the children can take their handywork home at the end of the party (if they can hold off eating them!) Each child takes an apple and dips it into the toffee and then rolls their apple into their preferred sweeties! *It’s easy to make your own toffee mixture or you can melt down shop-bought toffee sweets. Be sure that the mixture is not boiling hot when the children are making their toffee apples. Please mention the Local Beacon when responding to adverts - 49 -

News from Bronllys Hospital

& Community League of Friends After what seems years of continuous campaigning we seem to have a lull. This means that The League can get back to its main aims and objectives, which are to raise money to provide amenities to improve patient care. We would like to thank a number of people that have helped us. Firstly we would like to thank all of you who have given donations. Among the items we have bought over the last two years are another high/low bed and a new Ice Flaker machine for physio. This is an important piece of equipment to help aid patient recovery. Both these items were around ÂŁ3000 each. We bought a reclining chair and await delivery of another two. We have also bought new bedside tables and foot rests as well as many smaller items for the ward and Day Hospital. We have paid for a better TV Ariel and we have just bought a DVD player for the Day Hospital. All

patients receive a present from us at Christmas and Easter Eggs at Easter. With the help of the Barnes Project in Talgarth and supported by some volunteers, we have been able to reintroduce the trolley round three days a week for the wards and the Day Hospital. Our thanks to Bronllys Garage for providing papers on sale or return and to Boughrood Stores who keep us well supplied with sweets and chocolates at a competitive price, as well as going out of their way to provide requested items. We should also like to XLERO 1VW 7YQQIV½IPH JVSQ 8EPKEVXL JSV TVSZMHMRK this service for many a year. Please support our Autumn Fair on Saturday November 9th 2pm - 4pm Talgarth Church Hall and THANK YOU AGAIN Maggie Sims Chair of Bronllys & Community League of Friends Bronllys Hospital, Bronllys.
