November Competition

We have some lovely craft ideas for children and adults: turn to page 12 to make your own light bulb decorations and page 21 to find instructions on some DIY Christmas cards. Get organised now in November, before it all gets too busy in the run up to Christmas.

For the chance to win a £10 gift voucher from Beacons Farm Shop, please complete the wordsearch on page 14 and send to us by 16th November 2013. The winner will be picked at random.

For a final month we include a section on Christmas Parties – it’s not too late to organise your Festive celebrations. Turn to page 25. Page 27 onwards gives some great suggestions for Christmas gifts. Start locally – I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Winner of last month’s competition: Miss M Evans, Brecon

One date I have already marked in my diary is the Nearly New Sale on Saturday 30th November, turn to page 33 for full details. My daughter Cariad is 15 months old and her favourite toys consist of socks, boxes and ‘mummies things’. Coming close to this are books, balls and noisy toys – I’ll be sure to grab some bargains at this local sale and wrap them up for under the Christmas tree. She won’t know the difference but my bank account will!

News from Brecon Business Club (BBC) Brecon Business Club Ball raises £3700 for local Charity Brecon Business Club held its first Charity Ball on October the 5th at Peterstone Court Hotel in aid of Usk House with St David’s Hospice Care. The Ball was sponsored by Mitchell & Meredith and Centre of Attention. It was a huge success and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the evening. Usk House provides a valuable day hospice service as well as the new Hospice at Home Service which is available to patients in south and mid Powys and has benefited so many local families. On arrival, guests were beautifully entertained by Aberhonddu & District Male Choir. A lovely meal provided by Peterstone Court was followed by the club’s auction and raffle, with many of the prizes and promises having been donated by club members and local businesses. Chris Jones from McCartneys was the auctioneer for the evening, successfully auctioning over 20 items for a handsome profit. Roger from the Clarence was the Master of Ceremonies for the evening and local Band 4C kindly donated the evening’s fabulous entertainment. Brecon Business Club was set up last year by a group of local businesses, to help and support each other, as well as to support and promote the work of local Charities. Membership is growing fast and we are a vibrant and friendly group. Please visit our website at breconbusinessclub.org We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our members, local businesses and to all who kindly donated and gave their time and effort in making this event such a huge success. patients stand independently has been invaluable. Visitors were interested to see the “dementia” clock. This clock helps patients who suffer from dementia to remember the time, day and month. The list goes on and on.

Each year money is spent on purchasing new equipment to be used by consultants and staff in the various clinics. The welfare of patients is of paramount importance and whenever items such as mattresses, chairs and tables are needed for the comfort of patients the League will buy them. Nurses make requests for more up to date equipment for use in the wards and if affordable are acquired.

With the cutbacks in funding from the N.H.S, more and more requests are being made to replace items throughout the hospital and this will be exacerbated when further cutbacks will be made in future.

Finances are definitely a challenge for the N.H.S, but the League can only meet the challenge with the help of the local community. It relies on the financial generosity of Brecon and District residents. Donations and bequests are essential to help the League continue its valuable work to improve treatments and comforts of patients by acquiring necessary equipment. – Marion Morgan.

Brecon Poets: Peter Brooke Each issue of your Local Beacon will from now onwards include a short piece by a local poet. The Haunted Palace is by Peter Brooke, an artist and a writer on art, religion and politics. Peter sings an Orthodox Vespers in Brecon Cathedral every Monday evening at 6.00 p.m. His website is www.peterbrooke.org.uk The Haunted Palace The poet who is taken with the mystery of Form is taken with something beyond anything anyone can imagine. Imagination is the coach we travel in and not the destination. As the repetition of a simple prayer produces a new world of feeling that slowly comes over us and wraps us like a cloak, or like a mist, the poet, digging through a swamp, uncovers something that is magical and enormous an empty space that speaks to us that is the very stuff of the silence after the concert. There are not many poets who attain to this. It functions as (to quote one who understood better than any of us) the valley of unrest, the haunted palace.

Thursdays 7pm St Davids Hall, Beilihelig Road, Llanfaes

Contributions from local poets are invited. These should be no more than 24 lines in length and accompanied by two or three succinct sentences about the poet. They should please be emailed to breconpoets@yahoo.com and not directly to the Local Beacon.

Wild in November

Protecting wildlife for the future

Golden Plovers can be seen now on local hills, especially where bracken has been cut and removed. They have short bills for picking up worms, insects and grubs, and big eyes to feed night and day. On Llandefalle Hill and Mynydd Fforest north of Brecon, gatherings of two hundred or more are not unusual and there can be twice that number. Mynydd Illtyd, the Roman Road near Trecastle and hills above Upper Chapel and Erwood are other regular sites. Fast formations, often announced by plaintive whistles, make pointed patterns high in the sky. These birds are visitors from the north, some present in every winter month, with more passing through now and in March and April. Golden Plovers have almost been lost as local breeding birds. According to Breconshire Birds Annual Report 2012, now on sale at the Wildlife Trust office and other local outlets, only one possible pair was noted. Reasons for the decline include the loss of heather moorland habitat to forestry, burning and improved grassland.

To find out more about our wildlife and its conservation, come to the Brecknock Wildlife Trust AGM in Bishop Bevan Hall at 7.00 on 13th November. Article by Keith Noble

Royal Mail’s Initial Public Offering has seemingly whetted the appetites for stock picking among the general public. The shares were massively over-subscribed before trading had started – with 20 investors fighting over every piece of stock. The pent up demand for the shares increased the value of Royal Mail by £1.2bn over the course of 8 hours trading.

Most financial advisers do not recommend direct equity portfolios for investors with less than £200,000 of available funds. This is because it is difficult to achieve a suitable spread of investments with less capital. It is also important that potential investors are aware of the necessity to monitor fund performance and the need to sell funds periodically to maximize tax efficiency. For those that do not have the time or inclination to invest directly in the stock market a wide range of managed funds are available. Here your money is pooled with many other investors and spread across a range of different stocks and sectors. This diversification helps to reduce risk. Managed funds are available through a range of different investment wrappers including ISAs, unit trusts, bonds and pensions.

It’s not too late to organise your Festive celebrations! For the second month running we include some suggestions of where to book that all important Christmas Works Party. In fact whilst I write this, I’m putting a note in MY diary to organise the venue for my team as soon as this issue goes to print! November and December always proves to be busy with social events, so the sooner I get this done, the less stressful it will be. My plan will be to ring a few of the local restaurants, ask them for their menus, show them to the team – and book a date that everyone at Wye Local and Local Beacon can make. Hopefully taxis, childcare and fancy dress costumes will fit around this nicely!!! If family are coming to visit in the run up to Christmas, book somewhere in advance for a sociable meal – think of all the washing up you won’t have to do! Whatever your plans, I hope you experience good food, fine company and have a jolly good time! Lisa Marie x

Start your Christmas Shopping where you live The general consensus seems to be that you pay more for things in your local shop than you would on line. But is that always true? I think not. When starting these community magazines, both Wye Local and Local Beacon, I got to know local traders. I started to pop in more often than I normally would. I became to see that not only are local shops competitive with online prices you also receive a much better service. In circumstances when an item is more expensive, stop and think why. Do on-line shops have high Business Rates like shops in Brecon Town? No. And I won’t even go into the topic of Taxes!

ers ouchble! a Gift v l i a v now a

Also in this area we have many local artists, making wonderful unique items that you won’t find anywhere else. These can sometimes be the best presents. I’m not insisting you do ALL your Christmas shopping locally, all I do ask is that you start it in your local town. I think you will be pleasantly surprised. And by spending your hard earned money in your town, it keeps the money within your community. Lisa Marie x

Listed Buildings Owners of listed buildings are obliged to maintain them, as in effect they are being held in trust for us all. When alterations are undertaken special care needs to be taken and prior consent has to be applied for and be granted by the local authority. It is often thought that listed buildings cannot be changed or extended and have to remain unaltered, but that is simply not the case. Provided a building is treated with respect it is often possible to extend it.

For example, the owners of a Grade II listed farmhouse near Hay-on-Wye needed more space for a growing family. A substantial two-storey extension, together with a connecting link, was designed with great care. Consent was granted by the Brecon Beacons National Park Authority and CADW. Its walls are limewashed stone, and details and proportions echo the existing building. The new extension contains two bathrooms and a utility room, and this has allowed modern services to be removed from the original, historically important part of the house. With over 30 years of experience Nicholas Keeble Associates’ current projects include works to Grade II* and II buildings in Whitney-on-Wye, Hay-onWye, Llanelian-yn-Rhos and Brecon. The practice is equally happy working on unlisted houses and barn conversions, which receive the same respect as listed structures.
