Local Beacon encourages local residents to shop locally where possible (wow that’s a bit of a mouthful!). With this in mind, each month we intend to introduce a local Butcher, a local Barber or maybe a local Bread Maker! The ‘Get to Really Know’ feature is our way of introducing you to important local businessmen/women with the aim you will like what you read and support them on the High Street. Our first gentleman is Paddy Sweeney. Turn to page 21.

News from Roger Williams MP Raising the issue of Fuel Poverty in Parliament One of the issues I have dedicated a lot of time to in Parliament recently has been fuel poverty.The UK has relatively low energy prices and high incomes compared with much of Europe, yet has a larger fuel poverty problem due to poor quality housing.

I believe we have to start focusing on the cause of the problem, rather than solely focus on short-term solutions. Investing in better housing should be the top infrastructure priority.

Recently I managed to secure a debate on Fuel Poverty and Cold Homes in the House of Commons.

This was linked to the Energy Bill Revolution campaign, which focuses on fighting fuel poverty in the UK. The Energy Bill Revolution has found that the core problem lies with the poor heat efficiency of our housing stock.

Rural areas, including my constituency Brecon and Radnorshire, are especially badly hit by fuel poverty. One of the real concerns is the number of

people who do not have access to mains gas and have expensive fuel for heating and cooking and cannot benefit from Dual Fuel Tariffs. While only 10% of those in urban areas do not have a gas connection, 36% of households in rural areas like ours are off-grid.

At least three villages in my constituency could have their fuel poverty problems greatly reduced if they could have mains gas installed. Abercraf, a former mining village relied on free coal; Llangynidr, with the mains running the other side of the Usk river; and Howey only needing a short extension from Llandrindod Wells all remain excluded from mains gas. There are of course several more.

It is for these reasons that I have been making this point to Ministers and urging them to extend the gas mains to communities that are currently not benefiting from them and to invest in insulating homes. That would go a long way in solving fuel poverty in rural areas.

Gremlin Rally Brecon Motor Club held its annual Gremlin Road Rally over the night of 1st and 2nd March with the first starter away from The Barn at Brynich on the stroke of midnight. Crews had gathered at the barn during the evening for a briefing.

A total of 73 entrants, a driver and navigator in each car, enjoyed a demanding 130+ mile tour of traditional Powys lanes where navigation skills were as important as driving prowess. Enthusiastic support from a number of farmers and local land owners enabled cars to drive safely through farmyards at speed.The weather on the night was favourable although the soggy ground and muddy roads caught a few drivers unawares.

Usk House Hospice, the local palliative care provider, benefitted from the sale of spectator guides at the start and will receive a charitable donation from the Brecon Motor Club as a result of the rally.

IRIS

The Iris is named from the Greek for rainbow and has a wide range of distinctive colourful flowers. It is one of the oldest cultivated plants and has been found depicted on Egyptian temple walls. The petals of each flower usually comprise of three falls and three standards and influence the heraldic fleur de lys image.

Iris unguicularis, or winter iris, is evergreen with lilac flowers in autumn through to early spring. It prefers a sheltered site against a south or west facing wall and is a great flower for cutting.

Iris sibirica is a tall slim plant with glorious dark veined blue or purple flowers from late spring to early summer. It likes wet conditions.

Iris foetidissima produces dull yellow or purple flowers followed by striking seed pods revealing scarlet seeds which last throughout winter. This iris can cope with both wet and dry conditions.

Iris pseudocarus, or yellow flag iris, is native to the British isles. It prefers semi shade and thrives in a water garden.

Pollinators need help and we need new beekeepers!

For their sake and ours, our pollinators need help.

And we do need new beekeepers! Brecon and Radnor Beekeepers Association exists to promote beekeeping and to provide support for beekeepers and our pollinators generally.

The beginnersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; course runs over six Saturday afternoons from April 12th, in Llanddew Village Hall, LD3 9ST. Every Saturday thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be a theory session followed by a practical at the apiary. So why take a course? Beekeepingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a craft, involving guardianship of bees with a fascinating, complex life cycle. There

are many questions before you even get your first hive and bees.When it comes to taking care of your bees, learning with others, with teaching and support from experienced local beekeepers, is much more likely to lead to a good healthy life for your bees and to a happy successful experience for you.

The ISA season is upon us – steps to better ISA investing

Let’s start with the basics. An ISA is simply a savings wrapper that can make a savings account or investment plan tax efficient. There is an annual savings allowance, which is uprated with inflation each year.This tax-year (April 2013/14) you can shelter £11,520, of which half (£5,760) can be in a cash ISA. From April, the allowance rises to £11,880 – again, only half of which can be in cash.

Most ISA investors wrap a portfolio of investment funds. These funds are commonly held on a “platform” for easy administration. A platform more simply put is a fund supermarket.

The charge for this service varies wildly. Some of the more well-known platforms such as Hargreaves Lansdown have the highest platform charges. A higher charge will hinder the longterm performance of the underlying funds. It is important to shop around when choosing a platform provider.

After deciding on platform provider it is then necessary to choose the portfolio of funds. Great care needs to be taken as fund performance will have the biggest impact on the growth of the portfolio. There are over 2,000 funds to choose from so it is not always a straightforward decision. As a general rule there should be a mix of funds that have exposure to different market sectors, countries and economies for better diversification. It is important that the performance of the funds is reviewed regularly.

A hidden gem Most people know about the Cathedral, and the awardwinning Pilgrims Tearooms just opposite, but there are still those (even in Brecon!) who don’t realise that there is a Shop and Heritage Centre adjacent.

As you would expect, the Shop sells Cathedral souvenirs, religious books and cards, but local people “in the know” and even those from other towns return often, once they discover our large range of quality cards, local history books and all-age gifts that are very reasonably priced and difficult to find elsewhere – and there is free parking!

We are also now a Big Art Share venue, showcasing local artists’ original work and prints – a new exhibition,“Tooth and Claw” runs until 6th May and is not to be missed.

The Shop is staffed by our loyal assistants, mostly volunteers, and all profits help to conserve the historic Tithe Barn and support the Cathedral. We feel very privileged to serve the wider Brecon community, as well as St John’s Ward. Wild in April

Protecting wildlife for the future

As summer visitors arrive to join the locals, more and more birds are singing now. The calls and songs of Nuthatches, including a shrill â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;peep-peep-peeppeepâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; and a bubbling trill, ring out loud and clear.

Take a walk along the Usk or the Canal, through Priory Groves or up Slwch Hill and you are likely to hear Nuthatches up in the trees. If you put out food for birds this one could rank high in the garden pecking order. The outsize bill is good for making holes, smashing nuts and tweezing out grubs; combined with the short tail it gives the bird a distinctive flight silhouette.

With strong feet and curved claws Nuthatches can climb up and down trunks and branches, unlike the slightly-built Treecreepers which share the same trees but fly down when they reach the top. They are hole-nesters and have a neat trick of using mud to reduce the size of the entrance to keep out larger intruders.

Priory pupils’ Crocus planting Reception year 1 Children at the Priory School Brecon worked hand in hand with The Brecon Rotary Club in becoming more aware of helping overseas children in their fight against Polio. They each planted some Crocuses, the emblem for the Cause. Janet Davies their teacher said they had all had such good fun. They had planted the bulbs and learned to nurture the plants and see them flower.

The Children had completed a project on Turnips as part of their curriculum and this project helped them get hands on with the soil and bulbs. When the five year old children were asked what they had learned some answers were delightful’ A crocus is smaller and more purple than a Turnip’.

President of Brecon Rotary Club Mr Pat Blake took an assembly for all of the children at the school to raise awareness of Polio. This disease has been stamped out in the UK, but still affects children worldwide and is easily preventable with the right medication.

Cariad’s Column Spring is here and I have a spring in my step ...

I love it when the sun shines. My favourite place in the whole wide world is our garden. I can chase Mia and Toby the kittens. I can sneak up on Dolly Parton & Gang.They are the chickens. And Otis and Redding the ducks make the funniest noises. In the evening I get to round them all up so Mr Fox doesn’t get them. I’m yet to meet Mr Fox but Daddy says he would like our feathered friends for his din dins. The kittens help me, then they come in the house with us.

My favourite word at the moment is “Why”. Mummy and Daddy are not that fond of it. I use it a lot. Perhaps I should use another word like ... “Pam”. Mummy says I will learn Welsh at School.

Next time I can tell you all about our holiday, we’re going on a air-plane.

News from Arts Alive Wales Discover a creative course to suit you.

Arts Alive Wales in Crickhowell have launched their fresh summer programme of creative workshops and events. A new booklet is available which has details of all their short courses, including Woodcut Printmaking, Drawing for Beginners and Creative Photography.

One of the highlights this season is a unique five-day course with Textile Artist, Chris Gray, exploring the vibrant tribal textiles of Asia and the Middle East (12th – 16th April).Plus, there are weekend workshops in Botanical Illustration (5th/6th July) with experienced artist Debbie Devauden and have a go at creating beautiful Dovetail Joints (14th/15th June) with local Cabinet Maker, Dan Tomlinson. All courses are suitable for beginners as well as those with some experience.

Brecknock Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs 67th Annual Drama, Entertainment and One Plus Festival was held at Theatr Brycheiniog, Brecon on 3rd – 7th February 2014 supported by Barclays bank. Members competed in the Entertainment, Junior Drama, Senior One Plus and Junior One Plus competitions.

During the weeklong Festival, eleven clubs competed and up to 450 young people performed on stage.

Pontfaen YFC won the Entertainment competition with their production Bridget Jones’s Dairy” written

by Verity Jones and produced by Verity Jones and John Davies, this same production won the NFU Mutual Trophy for Best Production of the Festival.

Sennybridge YFC won the junior Drama section with their production entitled ‘Mam, There’s a Spaceship in Our Backyard!” produced by Colette Evans and Julie Davies and assisted by Eileen Jones.There were a record number of 31 One Plus entries, thirteen of which were senior and eighteen junior entries.

Erwood YFC achieved first place in the Senior One plus section with “Haunted” and Sennybridge YFC achieved first place in the Junior One Plus section with “But It’s Not Christmas”.

The awards were presented on the Gala night which had to be postponed due a power cut and was then held on Wednesday 19th February.These awards were presented to members for their outstanding contribution to the Festival, Milo Rodel John, Llandefalle YFC won Best Actor 26 years or under; Bethan Jones, Sennybridge YFC won Best Actress 26 years or under; Iwan Havard, Sennybridge YFC won Best Actor 18 years or under and Josie Howells, Trecastle YFC won the Best Actress 18 years.

News from Brecon Grammar School Old Boys Association Every year former pupils of the old Brecon Boys Grammar School meet together for an annual reunion and dinner. And in recent years the invitation has been extended to former members of the long defunct Brecon Girls Grammar School.

2014 is a milestone in the history of the Old Boys Association: this year it receives its “bus pass” having reached the grand old age of 65! And in keeping with another tradition the OBA will be holding the reunion dinner on the weekend after Easter - always the Saturday after Easter.

Upcycling: bottle tops into Tea Lights Save your bottle tops or beer caps when you are having a drink so that you will have a collection on hand. Remove any rubber sealing from the inside of the cap and then wash each before you store it, using warm soapy water and a clean towel for drying.

Find wax supplies. There are a few ways you can do this – gather as many old, broken crayons together to melt and use as the wax or you can use old, melted-down candles you find around the house.

Or buy the wax from a craft store.

Pick up a package of pre-waxed wire wicks. Do not worry about the wick length, as you will trim it to desired size after the candle wax has been poured.

Line up the bottle caps, use only undamaged bottle caps. If the cap is dented or twisted, do not use it for this project, as the wax may spill from the sides.

Pour the melted wax into the bottle caps. Fill each bottle cap to the top, holding the wick upright to keep it centered and above the wax. Allow the wax to set for several hours. Although wax congeals rather quickly, don’t move or use the candle until it has fully set, which takes approximately two hours.

Trim the wick to the desired length (1/4”). Ideally, they should sit on a saucer or candle plate to catch drips and hot wax overflow.

Place one pre-waxed wick in the middle of each bottle cap. Place the wick in the dead center of the bottle cap so that when you burn the candle, the wax melts away evenly.

Melt the candle wax. Whether you’re using crayons or actual candle wax, melt the wax the same way.

Place the candles or wax in a small pot. Remove all the paper from the crayons before melting the wax.

Fill a larger pot half way to the top with water. Bring the water to a rolling boil and then place the smaller pot with the wax inside the larger pot. Allow the wax to slowly melt until it is of a liquid consistency.

Pour the melted wax into a metal pouring container. if you have one for easy pouring.

News from local WIs TRALLONG & PENPONT WI The March meeting of Trallong & Penpont WIwas held in the Church Hall, with President Ruth Jeffries taking the meeting.Names of members prepared to enter items in the forthcoming WI. Show were taken, as well as reminders of other events organised by the Federation were noted.

Bill had brought 2 muskets to show. The sayings ‘flash in the pan’, ‘side burns’, ‘lock stock and barrel’, ‘straight as a ramrod’ date back to when these muskets were used.Bill was thanked by Pam Holmes.

Sue proposed the vote of thanks to Julie.Barbara Jones won the competition of a recipe for a beauty product.In second place was Ruth Jefferies.

The competition picture of a dragon, any medium, was won by Mariane Morgan, second Jean Evans and third Doris Jones. The raffle was won by Rose Jones.

Members brought Welsh cakes and bara brith for refreshments as March is always a Welsh themed evening in honour of St David.

PRIORY WI The March meeting was held at Kensington Church Hall. The President expressed sympathy to Ruth Ison, whose close friend, Ian, had died recently. The quiz team did well at the recent competition but were pipped at the post by Cradoc WI. Mr Bill Cainan, formerly R S M in the Royal Welsh and now Curator of the Military Museum at the Barracks, came to talk about the soldier’s life in 1751.

He arrived wearing the uniform of a mid eighteenth century soldier. The majority of men joining the army were agricultural labourers. When signing on each man was given a complete uniform, which included 3 pairs of shoes, and this had to last for 2 years. Because

News from Friends of Brecon and District Mind ARCHITECTURE & THE MIND: Photographs of a Walk Through Talgarth’s Mid Wales Hospital by Artist Jan Williams.

There will be an Exhibition Launch with a talk by the artist, at The Bakers’ Table Café, Talgarth mill on Tuesday 8 April, from 7-9pm. The launch includes a glass of wine, pizza and nibbles – £6 (Friends of Brecon & District Mind, £5) Tickets available at the café or on the door.

The Exhibition continues until Monday 21st April, Tues – Sunday, 10-4; Easter, 9.30-4.30 The photographs for this exhibition were taken by artist Jan Williams on a walk through the decaying and partially-ruined buildings of Talgarth’s Mid

Wales Hospital in 2010. ‘My aim with this series of photographs,’ says Jan, ‘was to capture the abandoned hospital’s dereliction and its state of being in limbo or ‘betwixt and between’ before fate tips it either one way or the other.’ Indeed, the buildings, originally opened in 1903 as the Brecon and Radnor Joint Counties Lunatic Asylum and closed in 1999, will, eventually, give way to either complete ruin or rebuilding.

“ My aim was to capture the abandoned hospital’s dereliction and its state of being in limbo” Jan was born and brought up near Brecon. She lives in Cardiff where she studied fine art at Cardiff College of Art and Design, graduating with a first class honours degree in 2009 and qualifying for a Masters of Fine Art in 2012. She is chair of the Kings Road Artist’s Studios, Pontcanna, and is an active member of the artist community.
