To our October issue. I am chuffed to inform you, we have now appointed an apprentice as part of our team. Nicole Williams is a local lass just like me, being born and bred in Hay-on-Wye, with her family all living and working locally, and also being a Gwernyfed High School student. Since Nicole has started she has been out delivering our 2015 Local Landscapes Calendar, been in contact with our what’s on listing advertisers and slowly but surely she is getting my paper work in order! Already I can see she is going to be an invaluable part of the CariAds Local Ltd. team. Someone approached me recently asking ‘’which National company was Local Beacon part of?”. I was a little dismayed so I thought I’d just let people know the Local Beacon may now trade under the name of CariAds Local Ltd but we are still a small team of local people, owned by the same Welsh lass, me.We practice what we preach and continue to support a local litho printer (not some super large outfit in London or overseas) for our monthly print run, we use local people to deliver the publication ... I can confirm no National Company owns this magazine. It’s success has been made possible by you the readers, the local businesses who advertise and the backing of a wonderful team. This month we introduce a new feature, Your History. Each month Breconshire Local & Family History Society will kindly supply us an interesting article along with a photograph, sometimes old. A very interesting read. Don’t forget Brecon Arts Festival, a week long festival celebrating the arts in Brecon. Please take a look at our Christmas section within this issue, Christmas Shopping kicks off on page 20, and our Christmas Parties start on page 23. Be an early bird and get organised. Enjoy, Lisa Marie x (Photo above: Cariad and Lisa Marie Badham)

Competition: (Winner of September Competition: Jon Pimm, Llanfrynach.)

For the chance to WIN a session with Foot Notes, either an aromatherapy back massage or a reflexology treatment at the Brecon Complementary Centre, please complete the word search on page 18 and send to us by 16th November 2014. The winner will be picked at random.

We also produce a similar publication for the Talgarth and Hay on Wye area. It’s called Wye Local. Just like this magazine the aim is to support local businesses and services. The good news is, if you are unable to pick up your copy of the Wye Local in the local catchment area, you can view it on our website from the beginning of each month. Some of the many topics included in Wye Local, October issue: • Gwernyfed Geckos Netball Club • The Old Electric Shop • Fashion Farmer advice • Huws Gray Stove Show ... And much much more. Just go to www.wyelocal.co.uk and click on the small image of the front cover ...

News from Roger Williams MP A number of important debates took place in Parliament this month. During a debate on the Sales of Puppies and Kittens I called for a ban on selling them in pet shops. I believe that with only around 70 pet shops now selling puppies and kittens it is time to bring this practice to an end. Many of these pets are bred in so-called puppy farms and are weaned much too early from their mothers in order to breed from their mothers again more quickly. I believe that people wanting to buy puppies should buy them directly from the licensed breeders, and should make sure that they see the puppy with the mother. The Minister has said he will write to local authorities telling them that all puppy breeders need to be licensed. I will be writing to the Welsh Assembly to check whether this applies to Wales also. This month I managed to secure a debate on Food Fraud. The Government has published the Elliott Report that looked into food fraud and food crime in the UK. This report was triggered by the horsemeat scandal last year. A year on, food fraud is still a big issue. A poll conducted

earlier this month shows that it is still corrosive to consumer confidence, with over half of people worried that a food fraud incident will happen again. This lack of confidence has ramifications right the way through the food chain. Farmers, who produce the raw ingredients for the food industry, rely heavily on consumer confidence, and during the debate I have made the point that it is vital to safeguard our food industry. I was also thrilled to see my Lib Dem colleague Michael Moore MP being successful in obtaining the opportunity to promote his Private Members’ Bill on International Aid. This makes it a legal obligation for the UK Government to spend 0.7% of its GDP on international aid. I am a sponsor of the Bill and tabled an EDM on this matter also. I am very pleased the Bill has received its second reading. Some would say that with severe financial problems at home we should not spend so much abroad. However international aid builds economies in developing countries which in turn buy our products. And as Nelson Mandela said “the biggest obstacle to peace is poverty”

Brecon Town Council are once again starting to organise The Annual Act of Remembrance which will be held on Sunday 9th November, 2014 at 10.30hrs at St. Mary’s Parish Church followed by a service at the Cathedral at 11.30hrs.There will also a short service at St Mary’s Church Green on 11th November 2014 at 10.50am. 38th Caledonian Market in Brecon Market Hall On Saturday 1st November the Rotary Club of Brecon will hold its annual Caledonian Market as always on the first Saturday in November. The first took place in 1977 and not a year has been missed since then. It has become an institution for the people of Brecon and is looked forward to with great anticipation. The floor and tables in the Market Hall are stacked with items such as books, toys, clothes, furniture, other household goods and garden produce all donated by local people for sale at bargain prices. All the proceeds go to supporting mostly local charities. Members of the club collect all the items in the weeks before the sale. Over the weekend of the Market they are assisted by a large number of enthusiastic volunteers who come back year after year and who are essential to its success. Last year more than ÂŁ10,000 was raised for deserving causes.

YOURhistory

‘In My Craft or Sullen Art’ Twelve Artists respond to the Poems of Dylan Thomas

Oak House, 12 The Bulwark, Brecon Dr Prestwood Lucas lived in Oak House from 1840 to 1871. He was a physician who had trained in Paris and studied under René-Théophile-Hyacinthe Laennec, the French physician who invented the stethoscope. Prestwood took over his father’s practice including acting as doctor for Brecknock Infirmary. In 1871 Dr Lucas presented a stethoscope to the Infirmary – it is now at Brecon War Memorial Hospital. In 1854 there was a cholera outbreak in Brecon which killed 57 people. Dr Lucas observed that many of the patients lived in or visited the area between The Priory and the Usk. At that time the Madrell brook was an open stream into which rubbish and sewerage were thrown. When the brook overflowed the water went into the well at Beili Glas which was a source of drinking water for the whole area. Dr Lucas did not make the link between cholera and contaminated drinking water but he did believe that adequate sewerage systems and effective drainage were important. It took another 10 years for this to be achieved in Brecon. Dr Lucas was a town councillor and later an alderman. He was also a governor of Christ’s College and Deputy Lieutenant of the county. He died in 1871.

How will ‘Pension Liberalisation’ affect you?

INDEPENDENT FINANCIAL ADVICE

“Your local source of unbiased advice explained in Plain English”

It is six months on from the Chancellor’s surprise announcement of sweeping reforms to the private pension market. Many questions were left unanswered but recently the Government has sought to bring further clarity for investors approaching retirement.

F SAVINGS & INVESTMENTS F RETIREMENT PLANNING F MORTGAGES

From April 2015 investors will have the option of drawing their whole fund as a lump sum. A quarter of the fund will be paid tax-free, the remainder will be taxed against the investors income in the year in payment.

F INHERITANCE TAX MITIGATION F FAMILY PROTECTION Contact: t: 01874 611911 e: enquiries@beaconifa.co.uk w: beaconifa.co.uk

For those wanting an income from their pension there will be two main options as now: annuities and drawdown. Annuities offer a fixed income for life. Under the new rules providers will be able to build in guaranteed minimum payment periods and payments to the annuitant’s family on death. Income drawdown is where the pension fund is left invested and a retirement income is drawn from the invested funds. This sort of plan is to be rebranded ‘flexiaccess drawdown’. Previously there was a cap on the maximum amount of income that could be drawn each year. This has now been lifted.

Directly authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority

It is expected that the number of people choosing an annuity will fall, but it will remain a valid option for some.

BRECON

Thursdays 7pm St Davids Hall, Beilihelig Road, Llanfaes

The Government originally announced that all pension investors will be given access to free advice when they reach retirement. The offering has been redefined as the provision of information rather than advice. Whether this will prove to be sufficient remains to be seen. With an increasingly complex range of retirement choices available it has never been more important to fully understand your options.

Top 5 Interior Design Tips

W E S T B R O O K

I N T E R I O R S

AFFORDABLE INTERIOR DESIGN

Professional and tailored advice for your complete interior design or project.

1. When replanning a space, look at all the elements including lighting, furnishings, colour and flooring. Think about the functionality of the room, and look at the proportions. Only by analysing all these different aspects can you best plan how to achieve your dream space. 2. Be bold in your design wish list and don’t be afraid of introducing your own personality. If you love the colour teal, use this in curtains, cushions or in a painting and warm up the room with contrasting burnt orange accessories like cushions or vases. If you love geometrics and have a plain featureless bedroom, create a feature bedhead with bold fabric and use the main colour in other areas around the room. E.g. if the main colour of bedhead is red, then keep the remaining walls neutral to highlight the punchy red and look at fitting red draw pulls in the wardrobe or dresser to link it all in. 3. Budget wisely before starting your research and design and price up each aspect of your new space in a spreadsheet. If you find a “must have” piece e.g. a statement light, then review the other items and see where you can save. 4. Upcycle where you can – use your existing pieces and give them a new life by repainting, recovering or restoring. These sorts of creative projects will add personality and character to your home. Or if buying furniture new, don’t slavishly follow the latest trend – choose quality pieces that will last but can be integrated into future colour or design schemes in the future. 5. Play with texture, pattern and colours and add ambience within a space by using different fabrics, colours and finishes. Soften a dark hardwood floor with a tactile light wool rug, mix silk cushions with wool throws on an iron bed. For more interior design tips and hints, or for help in putting your own design plan together, contact Westbrook Interiors for a free first consultation.

Our range of services include - Room or Lighting Designs from £250 - Colour planning £50 - House Doctor (for sales or lettings clients) from £150 - Management of works specific to create your interior design project - Sourcing of Furniture and Accessories to compliment your new interior

Hedgehogs in October The Autumn Juvenile season is upon us.There is only one thing on every hedgehog’s mind and that is to eat, eat, eat and get fatter and fatter and fatter. Thin underweight hedgehogs will not be able to survive hibernation so often they do not try to hibernate. However as their natural food supply disappears, as it will as the weather gets colder, they will slowly starve to death. Hedgehogs seen “hibernating” in the open (or even just in plain sight) will most likely be dying of hypothermia. Hedgehogs that are not in a ball, e.g. lying on one side will not be hibernating and again they are likely to be hypothermic (cold). Small hedgehogs seen out in the day and mobile usually need help too. Those that are hyper-active and rushing about can actually be in greater peril than those that move about at a steady pace looking for food. Look at the BHPS’s leaflet on Autumn Juveniles as this gives you far more information about these juveniles than I can give in a short article.

PIC CREDIT BRITISH HEDGEHOG PRESERVATION SOCIETY

Providing food can attract both those that are desperately searching for food as well as your regular visitors. Regular visitors are less likely to need rescuing as whilst they need feeding up they are less stressed because they know of a regular supply of food and will doubtless have a nest near to that food source. If you are concerned about any hedgehog, or you see one out in the day, contact Howey Hedgehog Rescue ( Llandrindod – 01594 824951) or the British Hedgehog Preservation Society on 01584 890801 (if you can weigh the hedgehog first that is always helpful, but do use gloves when you handle them). For more information about hedgehogs and how to help them visit the BHPS web site at www. britishhedgehogs.org.uk

Wild in October

Protecting wildlife for the future

It has been a fine autumn for butterflies in my garden. Now that the Buddleia is finished, Michaelmas Daisies, Viburnum and Ivy are favourites. Small Tortoiseshells have been here in double figures with Peacocks and one or two Painted Ladies. Commas and Red Admirals like this one should stay out into November if the weather is kind. Some Tortoiseshells, Peacocks and Commas hibernate here as adults, and increasingly a few Red Admirals. I remember glancing up from a January meeting in central London to see one fly past the window, but they are chiefly migrants with the largest numbers arriving in August and September. I read that the name used to be Red Admirable, suiting such a showy insect. Its caterpillars, like those of the other Vanessid butterflies, eat nettles but most Painted Ladies prefer thistles. Books and websites advise every wildlife gardener to have a nettle patch. I confess to failure in this matter, but if you have the space, please do as I say, not as I do.

There is plenty of good information and advice at www. wildaboutgardens.org.uk, and local news and pictures on the Facebook page at www.brecknockwildlifetrust.org.uk. Article by Keith Noble

at Christmas following the Carol Service there is a community party.

a Vill ge

The Church of St Cynidr and St Mary is the only public building in Cantref. It was founded in the 4th century and this week it took a major step forward when running water arrived! It is hoped this will be the first step in making the church more suitable for a wider range of community and other activities.

FOCUS

CANTREF Cantref is a community of scattered hill farms in the heart of the Brecon Beacons. This is a lively community of about ninety adults, lots of young people and hundreds and hundreds of sheep. There is a healthy mix of newcomers and families who have farmed here for generations. Many of them offer self-catering accommodation, bed and breakfast or camping in spectacular locations with access straight onto the hills. A newcomer arriving right in the middle of Cantref could be forgiven for wondering where it is! Easiest landmark is the pretty church of St. Cynidr and St. Mary. The peak of Pen y Fan is in its parish and Walk to Worship Services have been held on the top, attracting hundreds of people. Opposite the church is Cantref Adventure Farm and Riding Centre.

The association between Cantref and its neighbour Llanfrynach means that many local friendships are forged at Llanfrynach and Cantref Women’s Institute and events at Llanfrynach and Cantref Community Hall. But the communities are very different – with Cantref retaining its strong hill farming identity, spirit and traditions. For more about Cantref, Llanfrynach and life in the Beacons read Where We Belong – Life in the Beacons Then and Now, edited by Susan Brook and on sale atThe Hours Bookshop. Or for current news and events www. llanfrynach-community.org.uk If you would like us to feature your village in a future issue of the Local Beacon, please give Lynda a call on 07775 898432 or email.

From here a spider’s web of country lanes lead to the hills where some of the country’s best Welsh hill lamb is produced. Be patient if pony trekkers or a flock of sheep being driven to or from a farm slow your journey down. Remote and isolated are not words you’d choose to describe a close-knit community. But paradoxically Cantref is just that. The need for close co-operation in farming the hills is an essential ingredient of life here. It has created a culture that is strong and confident and which welcomes newcomers and visitors who make the effort to join in. Shop Local – you’ll be pleasantly surprised It’s October, have you started your Christmas shopping yet? If like me the answer will be ‘’No way!”. Shopping on such a large scale for the festive season can be very stressful. My advice, and I really should take note to what I’m about to write in black and white, would be to make a list of all the people you like to buy for, then when out doing your weekly food shop or running your daily errands, just take a moment or two to see if you can get that special something for that special someone. This will spread out the cost of Christmas and certainly take away some of the stresses. Brecon and the surrounding villages have an abundance of unique shops, you’ll be guaranteed to get the most awkward of relatives that special gift! Don’t forget to keep your eye out for local fayres and markets brining local artisans all under one roof.

New in Town

Name of business? A Little Style

What do you wish you had known before you started? Kids love to move furniture around – I should have bolted the chairs to the floor!

Location? 7 Lion Street Why Brecon? It’s a lovely market town and I live here! Why did you decide to open this shop? I used to visit a fantastic kids’ clothes shop in Mumbles – I took my inspiration from there. As well as quality clothing and dress up, I also like to source more unusual products such as Mad Pax back packs which launched in Europe this summer – we were amongst the first shops in the UK to sell them – they are super cool and have been spotted on the backs of Will Smith & Hugh Jackman’s kids. What are some of challenges you encountered? Timing – clothing needs to be ordered nearly 12 months in advance so placing first order was a massive leap of faith as I hadn’t even secured my premises.

Is this the first business you have launched? Yes – I’ve spent the last 15 years working in telecoms. How is this different? Worlds apart – one of the last things I worked on in my last job was trial and roll out of fibre broadband – now I’m surrounded by clothing, mirrors and feather light shades – I love it! What type of education or experience helped you to open/run/manage this shop? I have a passion for great customer experience, and have spent most of my career working out what matters most to customers and delivering that in my products and services. I’m also hoping years of being a shopaholic will finally pay off. Describe a typical day in the shop. My morning starts with the cleaning – once that’s out of the way then it’s across the road to Sub Station for my morning coffee. I catch up on emails, review on-line orders and stock levels, and then open. Speaking to customers is definitely the best part of the job but I also enjoy spending time scouting out new suppliers and products. Any advice to new businesses in this area? Find yourself a network of people who can help – Kathryn Tunley at La Lingerie has been great and I’ve joined Brecon Business Club which has been a fantastic way to meet other local business people.

Local Talent: Toby Hatfield Type of Artist? Landscape Photography Range of Products? A4 and A3 white card mounted photos and blank greetings cards. Where can your products be purchased? My website is www.tobyhatfieldphotography.com and I do local craft fayres every month such as Brecon . Price range? Greetings cards £2.50 each, A4 mounts £15 and A3 £20-£25 How long have you been an artist? Have been taking photos since my teens but starting my website and selling over the last 2 years. Where did you train or gain experience? Picked up a camera when I was young and just started taking photos. What has been your proudest moment? I take pride in all my work but my image ‘Leaf Stack’ (included) I am probably most proud of as it was really a case of being in the right place at the right time and I haven’t seen it happen on the river since. Plus the photo was taken on my smart phone. I am also proud of the fact that I can say that none of my work has ever or ever will be photo-shopped or enhanced. I see it as a way of cheating to gain what can be achieved with a little patience and effort. What would you class as ‘your masterpiece? ‘Leaf Stack’ is my favourite image and the most unique.

Have you any future plans for your work? Keep exploring the local area looking for images that I like. Really trying to get the Brecon Beacons in a variety of conditions and lights as they are probably one of the most challenging subjects I have taken photos of. What advice would you give a local artist? Keep doing what you love, whatever makes you happy and inspired. What other local artists do you admire? I love the panoramic photos that Dan Santillo produces, another landscape photographer in this area. Artist statement: I enjoy taking images from the landscape around the National Park but in particular images that have a variety of colour. My favourite subject matter is sunsets. I just enjoy taking photos and consider myself lucky to live in the National Park.

REVIEW

Woodland Park Shooting Ground Wow what a great way to spend a Friday afternoon. I have always been one for having a wish list of things to do, but clay shooting had never featured on that list, but after an afternoon at Woodland Park Shooting Ground with John Butland teaching, I think it should be on everyone’s list of things to do at least once. Woodland Park Shooting Ground is just outside Brecon between Llanddew and Llaneglwys. The shooting ground is 10 acres hidden away within a 32 acre wood. The ground policy is “Safety is everything”. So before we left the club house John my instructor talked me through how to handle a gun and a list of safety rules. John then talked about cheek pressure and master eye, all this become clear when we walked over to the 1st stand. John also said that by the end of the lesson I would have hit the target. Clearly John had not met anyone quite like me before and I was about to prove him wrong, an hour later he was proved right, I had hit the target more than I missed so clearly anyone can do this!

One of the shooters we met had started learning to shoot clays thanks to a Christmas gift voucher. They cater for all ages and abilities and with John by your side teaching I defy anyone to have a go and not to succeed to hit their targets more than once. He is patient, kind and very clear in his instruction. I would highly recommend a session at Woodland Park Shooting Ground, costs vary depending on what you are looking for. So please do check out their website www.wpshoot.co.uk, or speak to the lovely John and Gill on 07811 189413.

Apparently my master eye is just off centre! John says this is key information to ensure you hit your target and frequently he finds people who have shot for years who still don’t know which is their master eye, but once they know, see an immediate improvement in their shooting. There are 10 shooting stands in the ground with each giving the shooter a differing pair of targets to shoot. The targets vary in direction, height, speed and manner with all programmed to replicate the way particular game birds or animals fly or run, to test shooters’ skills and reactions. John and Gill Butland took over the shoot 12 years ago. They open Friday and Saturday each week offering lessons as well as an opportunity for experienced shooters (those with the appropriate licence and gun) to practice and test themselves against the clays. The welcome is friendly, the tea and coffee along with cakes are always available in the club house. They cater for individuals who want to learn, those who need to improve and groups such as hen or stag parties or a group of friends wanting to try something new or even an alternative office party.

Clay shooting at Woodland Park Shooting Ground Brecon Whether you’re an experienced shooter, complete beginner or looking for a fun Stag, Hen or corporate experience, Woodland Park is perfect for you. We’re a friendly and professionally run clay shooting ground offering first class tuition across all levels, with a fully automatic practice layout for experienced shooters to test their skills. We also provide a voucher service for that special occasion. www.wpshoot.co.uk

Dementia matters Nearly all of us have some experience of dementia in our families and circle of friends yet the stigma of dementia remains. About 2,500 people in Powys are living with dementia and this number will only increase in the coming years. Over two-thirds of these people are living in the community. Most say they want to keep going out and use local shops, services and our wealth of leisure, cultural and spiritual resources. But people living with dementia lose confidence in themselves, and worry about how they will manage these day-to-day things that you and I take for granted. So why not become a Dementia Friend? Learn a little bit more about what it’s like to live with dementia and how you can help to make Brecon a dementiafriendly community. Each session lasts about an hour, and is run by a local volunteer Dementia Friends Champions. They are interactive – and fun! Anyone of any age can be a Dementia Friend and everyone is welcome. Dementia Friends sessions: Saturday 18th October at 11am in Brecon Library, Brecon. Wednesday 12th November at 7pm in the White House Inn, Sennybridge. Saturday 15th November at 11am in Brecon Library, Brecon. As well as these open sessions, we can also arrange individual Dementia friends session for your shop, business, community group or organisation. Interested? Anne is a member of the Sounding Bowl group as well as Brecon Poets and the Brecon Political and Theological Discussion Group. A social night out with the poets Courteously drunk as Chinese poets, genteel and satisfied we sip our booze – in homage to the Arts, we sip our booze, incline a reverential ear to all that Jazz – and Dylan presides benignly from my beer-mat; (there’s poetry for you) – an Icon’s face on all the beer-mats, poetry and booze, he would approve! Out of my glass a poem begins to ooze, working title, ‘Plump and Comfortable Blues’? Contributions from local poets are invited. These should be no more than 24 lines in length and accompanied by two or three succinct sentences about the poet. They should please be emailed to breconpoets@yahoo.com and not directly to the Local Beacon.

News from Brecknock YFC Brecknock YFC is off to a flying start in the new club year, with each club holding its AGM and electing new officers. The first competition of the new year was the Have a Go competition, held in Llanigon Village Hall, where members were expected to turn up and simply have a go at whatever task the judge set, be it singing karaoke or whisking an egg! The County is especially proud at the beginning of this year of the achievements of one young member in particular. On September 7th, Morley Jones and Nia and Elin Havard, all members of Sennybridge YFC and pupils at Ysgol Gyfun Ystalyfera, represented Brecknock at the National Stock judging competition in Harper Adams University, Shropshire. The County was very pleased to boast three of the four members who represented Wales, but were absolutely delighted to hear that Elin, our County Youth Forum Chairman, had won the competition, bringing home to Brecknock the title of National Junior Stockman of the Year, 2014. Llongyfarchiadau, Elin – a tremendous achievement! The county would like to also congratulate each and every member who has taken part in competitions throughout the past year – whether 1st or last it’s a joy to see members compete! Good luck to all for the 2014-2015 year and remember to have fun!! Members are looking forward to the Chairman’s ball at the end of September; this year, it’s Hellie’s Hoedown at Pentrenewbury Farm, Llandefalle, with a Country and Western theme, with entertainment from local band, We Three, all members of Llandefalle YFC members. All clubs are currently welcoming new members – please contact the YFC office on 01874 624889 for details of your local club.

News from WIs

PRIORY WI SEPTEMBER MEETING Condolences were extended to Betty Watkins, whose husband had died recently.

POWYS BRECKNOCK FEDERATION OF WIs What a week County Chairman, Margery Davies has experienced since receiving the National WI baton from Radnor Federation.

Everyone was delighted that Olwen Whormsley was able to attend the meeting after recovering from a serious illness. Flowers had been sent to former member, Lynne Norbury, on the occasion of her 99th birthday.

The first event she attended with the baton was with the Mynydd Epynt Group. Members walked around the Groe at Builth Wells and later everyone enjoyed a cheese and wine party. The following day the baton was taken to Hay on Wye where members of the Wye Group carried it around the town. A talk was given on the history of some of the very interesting buildings there and was followed by a delicious tea. On the Friday Merched y Mynydd group met at Craig y nos Country Park. Members carried the baton around the lake and up to the tearooms where a “Victorian” tea was served.

Frances Isaac, talented Llangasty WI member, brought quilted wall hangings which were used by Powys Brecknock Federation when it hosted the W I stand at the Royal Welsh Show. Frances designed the 3 hangings, the theme being ‘Focus of Life’. The Breconshire countryside was depicted behind the canal and members were represented performing various activities. Frances was able to create these hangings, along with the help of many WI members, within a period of a few months.

There was more walking for Margery and the baton on Saturday, Cylch y Myarth ladies dressed in costume depicting the various styles of fashion since 1915 and one group walked from Talybont to Llangynidr and the other from Llangattock to Llangynidr, they then proceeded to Llangynidr Hall for tea.

On show was the ’50 Shades of Grey’ quilt which had been made by members who attend Frances’ quilting classes as were quilts made by Frances herself. Heather Parry thanked Frances for coming and showing such beautifully crafted work.

Sunday was a more sombre occasion. The baton was taken to Brecon Cathedral where a service of dedication was held. Members of Sarasani served tea with cakes before members returned home. A week after receiving the baton it was time to hand it over to the County Chairman of Glamorgan, Caroline Davies. Margery, dressed in Edwardian style clothes and County Treasurer, Mary Robinson dressed as a milk maid complete with milking stool and bucket, were conveyed to the Llangynidr canal lock sitting in a transport box attached to an immaculate Ferguson T20 tractor belonging to a local resident, Gareth Davies. There they were met by Caroline Davies and her board of trustees and the baton was handed over. Everyone then made their way to Llangynidr Hall where Breconshire Board of trustees had prepared a salad lunch followed by gateaux and pavlovas, a wonderful ending to the week the baton spent in Breconshire. The Breconshire Federation official photographer, David Davies was able to accompany the County Chairman on all her visits and recorded all events for posterity.
