News from Kirsty Williams AM You may have seen recently some shocking figures about road safety in rural areas. On average 3 people die every day on country roads in Britain. The number of people killed on country roads is nearly 11 times higher than on motorways.

countryside will mean we have some dangerous stretches of road. We are also seeing far too many motorcyclists killed and seriously injured on the roads in mid Wales, figures for 2014 are already three times higher than 2013. I recently attended a public meeting in Bwlch. The meeting was deliberately timed to coincide with the arrival of the school bus and I was shocked by what I saw. It was chaos. There were cars speeding through the village, incredibly close to children and parents.

“ The number of people killed on country roads is nearly 11 times higher than on motorways Here in Wales almost 80 young people lost their lives last year on country roads in Wales and 629 were seriously injured. Those deaths will be a tragedy for a family and often a whole community. We are very lucky to live in beautiful countryside in mid-Wales. However, the nature of that beautiful

The local residents and local council are calling for a footpath for pedestrians, a reduced speed limit and flashing lights at the beginning and end of the School day. We must take action on these issues early, not react after an event. Afterwards is much, much too late. If there are any road safety issues in your area, please do not hesitate to get in contact with me at kirsty.williams@wales.gov.uk

YOURhistory

The Promendade This postcard has a 1909 postmark. The weir across the River Usk from the Boat House to Newton Farm was created when the Canal was built in 1800. Water for the Canal goes under the town through a pipe which can be seen alongside the Honddu bridge at Watergate. The Castle of Brecon Hotel advertised one of the attractions of the town being the walk ‘on the green sward along the banks of the Newton Pool, to watch the Salmon jump’. There was a proposal in July 1866 to install two new seats overlooking the Pool. The local newspaper reports that ladies would not be able to enjoy the walk to the new seats because of the bathing ‘at all hours’. The pond, Newton Pool, created behind the weir was perfect for swimming (probably by men and not always wearing swimming costumes). In 1894 an eisteddfod was held in Brecon to raise funds to improve the boating facilities and to create the Promenade walk along the river. However it seems to have taken some years to complete the work as in 1919 the Council discussed ‘the disgraceful condition of the Promenade’. The work had been started before the war but not completed. Fortunately the work was finished and, over 100 years since it was first proposed, The Promenade continues to be a popular walk along the River Usk. REVIEW

A bit of me time at Foot Notes I think we all deserve a bit of me time and an hour with Jenny at Foot Notes is just what doctors should order for everyone. Either a reflexology session or an aromatherapy massage, both allow you time to switch off from the stresses and strains of the world and let your body have a chance to revitalise. Jenny offered the opportunity to experience a treatment at home, but I opted to see her at the Brecon Complementary Centre, where I knew there’d be no unexpected callers to disturb my peace, but for some people that’s a fantastic offer. My time with Jenny started with a chat about my health and well being so that Jenny understood how my body worked, enabling her to treat me with specific oils to suit me. The first treatment was spent sitting in a comfortable chair chatting to Jenny while she massaged my feet. The massage was gentle, although some areas received more attention than others as Jenny worked through my feet. Reflexology is a nonintrusive, complementary health therapy based on the theory that different points on the feet, lower leg, hands, face or ears correspond with different areas of the body. So by using specific pressure techniques and massage on the feet or hands, the body is encouraged to help restore and maintain the body’s natural equilibrium. I was then treated to an aromatherapy back massage. Aromatherapy is a gentle massage using natural oils extracted from flowers, bark, stems, leaves, roots or other parts of a plant, which can help alleviate stress and improve mood. Jenny’s years of training enables her to match the correct oils to suit each client. I highly recommend a treatment with Jenny. She has a wonderful, calm, gentle manner that puts you at ease. Her knowledge of the treatments she offers is exceptional. I came away feeling very relaxed, revitalised, ready to face the world again and ready to book my next appointment very soon.

Pensioners warned over loophole that leaves their loved ones paying inheritance tax Millions of savers could miss out on the chance to pass on their nest egg tax-free simply because they’ve failed to tick a box on a pension form.

INDEPENDENT FINANCIAL ADVICE

“Your local source of unbiased advice explained in Plain English” F SAVINGS & INVESTMENTS F RETIREMENT PLANNING F MORTGAGES F INHERITANCE TAX MITIGATION

Last week it was revealed by the Chancellor that the current 55 per cent tax on pension funds passed on to relatives as an inheritance was going to be axed.

F FAMILY PROTECTION Contact: t: 01874 611911 e: enquiries@beaconifa.co.uk w: beaconifa.co.uk

Under the current tax regime a pension pot can only be inherited free of the 55 per cent tax if the deceased was no older than 75 and hadn’t drawn on their pension savings. The 55 per cent tax applies even if there is no inheritance tax due on the deceased’s estate. From next April this tax will be scrapped making saving through a pension even more attractive.

Directly authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority

Pete’s Carpets

However experts are concerned that many who now hope to leave their retirement pots to a loved one may find it instead falls under inheritance tax rules – and so incurs a 40 per cent charge.

Carpet and Upholstery Cleaning Domestic and Commerical Work Undertaken • High Powered Truck Mounted Machine • Fast Drying

This is because they failed to fill in a form stating their wishes when they took out the pension. As a result, the pension may be paid out to their estate, rather to an individual. Scrapping the 55 per cent tax on inherited pension pots is the last in a long string of amendments that the Chancellor has made to the U.K’s pension system this year. The changes on the whole will offer far greater flexibility at retirement. We hope that the increased choice leads to retirees making the right decisions.

Wild in November

Protecting wildlife for the future

Since September there has been a Great White Egret at Llangors Lake. Last year there were two from late November, so we might expect another. It seems likely that one of these is the same individual which has wintered at the Lake for four years running. Until a few years ago, Great White Egrets were rare visitors to Britain, but they are now here throughout the year and have raised young on the Somerset Levels. Other birds in the heron family have also colonised Britain recently. Little Egrets were the first to nest in 1996 and there are now hundreds of pairs. In the last few years Spoonbills, Cattle Egrets, Purple Herons and Little Bitterns have also started to breed here. The arrival of these immigrants follows an expansion of their European range to the north and west, a clear indication of climate change. Some birds may be able to move and adapt, but for most animals including us global warming is an urgent challenge.

Breconshire Birds Annual Report for 2013 is now on sale, see www.brecknockbirds.co.uk and www.brecknockwildlifetrust.org.uk. This is my last Wild article, expert botanist John Crellin will take over in December. Article by Keith Noble

FOCUS

D E F Y NNO G The charming and ancient village of Defynnog is one of the Brecon Beacons National Park’s most engaging places, which manages to combine beautiful vistas towards the Swansea Valley with a dynamic and active village life. The Defynnog Yew, in the churchyard of the splendid church of St Cynog, has recently been the subject of much media attention after being recently measured with a girth of 38 feet (11.6 metres) at 2 feet above ground, and being dated by experts as being around 5,600 years old which makes it one of the potentially oldest trees in Wales, and even possibly Europe. It is one of four yew trees in the graveyard, all worth a visit as is the church itself with it’s Arts & Crafts influence although parts of the building date back to the 11th Century. The church itself is home to a variety of village events which include the upcoming 2nd annual Advent Craft Fair which raises money for the church fabric funds and features a wide variety of fantastic local talent, with many lovely Christmas presents made with care and attention. This year it will be held on on Saturday Dec 6th from 11am till 4 pm with a cost per stall of £10. Last year’s event raised £625 for the church and a very enjoyable day was had by all!

The recent coupling of businesses in Defynnog with the other key settlements of Sennybridge, Crai and Trecastle to form the Upper Usk Valley Rural Alliance has initiated a pack of leaflets that detail the history of each village along with local walks for both the local community and visitors alike – these are available as the shops and businesses within the area, and locals are actively invited to comment on and add to the leaflets so that they are as much of interest to the locals as to tourists. Activities arranged by the group include a Community Walks programme with a local walk of around 2 hours on the last Sunday afternoon of every month, which are led by locals who are keen to share their special tracks, most of which take in stunning scenery with less used paths. For more information on the village of Defynnog, its history and the Upper Usk Valley, please visit www.upperuskvalley.wordpress.com If you would like us to feature your village in a future issue of the Local Beacon, please give Lynda a call on 07775 898432 or email.

Although only a mile away from Sennybridge with its shops and garages, within the village there are two highly popular places to visit, The Old School Tearooms which recently re-opened with new management of locals Kay

A Christmas window on Brecon On Saturday 22 November, Brecon’s local businesses have the opportunity to promote themselves at a special winter fair in the Market Hall. The event which is jointly organised by Brecon Town Council, Brecon Business Club and the Brecon Beacons National Park Authority, will see entrepreneurs in Brecon who don’t have their own shop window showcasing their products and services. Open from 10am until 3.30pm it is the ideal opportunity to meet the person behind the business and you may be surprised at what is available on your doorstep. The new stallholders will also be joined by familiar ones from the Brecon’s craft, farmers and weekly markets.

On the day a special Christmas map of Brecon will be available to help you find the ideal Christmas present for your friends and family. And be sure to make your way to St Mary’s Church where the Mayor and Mayoress will be turning on the Christmas lights at 3.45pm.

Brecon is full of local entrpreneurs Picture credit: Peter Williams

The event is funded by the Rural Alliances project, a EU’s Interreg 1VB NWE programme, of which the Brecon Beacons National Park Authority is lead partner. A core aim of the Rural Alliances is bringing entrepreneurs and communities together through the creation of new alliance structures to form self-supporting, inclusive, confident rural communities.

New In Town I am Jenny Cooke and I am a professional aromatherapist and reflexologist. I have been qualified as an aromatherapist for 16 years, and had a very successful practice in Oxfordshire before I moved to Brecon 5 years ago. I moved to Brecon because my husband and I enjoy the outdoors, and love the beacons. We set up 2 successful self-catering holiday cottages, and now that they are well established, I want to continue my work as an aromatherapist and a reflexologist. 1. Name of Business – Foot Notes – Essential oils used in aromatherapy, rather like in perfumery, are extremely volatile and evaporate at different rates. The quickest are called top notes, slowest are called base notes, and then we have the middle notes. Reflexology is mostly used on the feet unless the client has no feet or perhaps an infection. My very good friend Tracey came up with the name ‘Foot Notes’ to combine aromatherapy and reflexology. 2. Location – I am based at the Brecon Complementary Centre next to the doctors surgery on Mondays, and I also home visit within a radius of 15mile of Brecon on Wednesdays, (I will travel further by arrangement and can be flexible with the days). 3. Why did you decide to start this business? – I’ve always been interested in alternative health – ways of keeping healthy and well without going to a doctor. I discovered the benefits of essential oils after suffering with depression, and a friend suggested an aromatherapy massage. Essential oils are highly concentrated plant substances that are gentle and effective when used for physical and mental issues. Massage is the best way to receive them and is good for muscle strain, sports injury, stress, depression, sleep deprivation or just relaxation to name a few. Reflexology can be used on the feet or hands, and combines massage and manipulation of pressure points that represent the inside workings of the body. For example, if you have a mild headache, hold the thumb of one hand using the thumb and forefinger of the other hand, and press firmly in the middle of the pad whilst circling slowly and see if it helps. Aromatherapy and reflexology work well together,

and if used regularly, can help keep you mentally and physically fit if combined with a good diet and regular exercise. I started this business to help others benefit from these therapies.Very often the Doctor only has 5 minutes per patient, which isn’t long enough if you are just seeking advice or a reassuring word, and there are alternatives to pills without side effects. 4. What are the challenges you have encountered? – Starting a new client base when new to the area is a challenge, but I am offering 10% discount to Local Beacon readers and gift vouchers that can be purchased for any occasion, particularly birthdays and Christmas presents, by emailing your requests to jenny@foot-notes.co.uk. 5.What do you wish you had known before you had started? – I started out with aromatherapy in 1998 learning about the oils and their effects. I hadn’t realised there is so much more to holistic health. I very quickly became engrossed in all aspects of health, nutrition, exercise, relaxation and it is now an important part of my life that I want to share with everyone for their benefit. Before I became a therapist, I had been a secretary and a receptionist so I don’t find the admin side of the business difficult. Also I am very fortunate to have a wonderful husband who is good at everything, and is always there to help me. 6. Is this the first business you have launched? I started out as ‘Jenny Wren Remedies’ in 1999 offering aromatherapy treatments and bespoke creams and lotions for skin conditions, such as eczema and psoriasis. I soon found that people really enjoyed my relaxing massage treatments, and having the chance to talk rather than needing creams etc. Meanwhile I had also become a reflexologist and had a purpose built room in my garden made to use for aromatherapy massage and reflexology, and Foot Notes was born. It was the perfect peaceful setting, with birdsong in the background to relax and de-stress. I found reflexology interesting because the foot is divided lengthwise in to zones, and each part represents the body (the same also on the hands). For example, the big toe represents the head. 7.What type of education/experience helped you to open/run this business? I first spent a year in London during 1998 learning all about the essential oils, the Latin names, their properties, their contraindications. Then how to massage and its uses, then about the

anatomy and physiology of the different body systems. I had to do case studies and had to “borrow” people to massage, and they had to give their feedback over a number of weeks on my performance and how it had helped them. Each year I have to do a minimum of 12 hours of professional development to stay a member of the ‘International Federation of Professional Aromatherapists’, which helps keep me in touch with current knowledge. I don’t do any specific courses for reflexology, but I do read numerous books and have learnt about meridians and Chakras, which influence my work. 8. What would you like to do with your business in the next few years? – My husband and I are about to build a garden room to use for aromatherapy and reflexology, which will also have a domed roof that can be used as a planetarium. We will combine this with the holiday cottage, Stargazers Retreat, which we have in our garden with an observatory so that when the weather is inclement, the stars can still be seen, and I can offer aromatherapy or reflexology to our guests to enhance their stay in the beautiful, peaceful surroundings where we live between Trecastle and Crai.

9. Describe a typical day in your business – The holiday cottage and garden, plus the aromatherapy and reflexology is quite time consuming, but it is combining things that I really enjoy, but to make it work we have to split it up. So Mondays are spent at Brecon Complementary Centre 10am – 6pm for aromatherapy and reflexology, Wednesdays for home visits, Tuesday and Thursdays for gardening, Fridays cleaning the cottages, and the weekends are for washing/ironing/maintenance of the cottages. The days don’t always work out this way, and we juggle them around to suit so that we can be as flexible as possible.

Local Talent: Matt Williams Type of Artist? Painter and sculptor. Range of Products? I paint local landscapes, usually of the Brecon Beacons and occasionally farm animals, but always in oils. I also sculpt animals. Where can your products be purchased? I mainly sell through Ian and Clare Dent’s Ardent Gallery in Brecon, but I also sell through my website www.mattwilliamsartist. com and I undertake private commissions too. Price range? At my recent exhibition, my prices ranged from under £200 to over £1500 but generally they’re about the £300 - £500 mark. How long have you been an artist? When I left our dairy farm in Brecon, just after the Foot and Mouth Disease epidemic in 2000, I missed the Beacons so much and had an overwhelming urge to paint them – so I went out and bought a set of oil paints and discovered a passion for doing it! One of my first paintings was of Brechfa Pool above Llyswen and as I was finishing, a walker stopped and asked to buy it. I thought then that I’d better keep going. Where did you train or gain experience? I didn’t - I’ve just done my own thing – mistakes and all! Meg Stevens gave me lots of advice when she was painting on our farm and I have always remembered everything she said. She was really sympathetic to our struggle to continue farming and we struck up a good friendship while she painting; she even gave me the painting she had been working on! What has been your proudest moment? The opening night of my recent exhibition at Ardent Gallery. We sold 14 paintings and sculptures and had over 100 people attend. It was incredible! What would you class as ‘your masterpiece’? So far it would have to be one I did of the Beacons from Hay Bluff. It was a freezing cold afternoon in January, as the sun went down over the remains of some snow, which had turned into that crisp, icy stuff that takes ages to melt, and was reflecting the colours of the sky beautifully. The painting only took an afternoon to do and every brush stroke felt right. When I look at that painting I remember how incredibly quiet it was up there… and how very, very cold! Have you any future plans for your work? As well as

painting, I also work four days a week as an Assistant Headteacher at a large primary school in Bath, so I only really get to paint on the day a week I have off and in school holidays. Ultimately, I’d like to reverse that balance; teach less, paint more. What advice would you give a local artist? Get in touch with Ian and Clare at the Ardent Gallery. We’re incredibly lucky to have such an excellent gallery in Brecon and they’ve been so helpful to me. It’s such a boost when someone wants to spend their money and have your work in their homes – very humbling! What other local artists do you admire? Well firstly, it has to be Meg Stevens; she had that sensitivity for our environment that I really aspire to. But I also really like an artist called Reg Gammon, who farmed at Capel y Ffin. He paints with amazing, bright colours and a vibrant energy – totally different to what I do, but he still captures that emotion and atmosphere of the countryside and people that he paints. Artist statement: It’s only when you leave an area, that you realise how much a part of you it can become and the Brecon Beacons are a part of me; a beautiful, dominating, glowering, comforting, rewarding, inspiring, enduring, challenging, secure and constant part; a part that never ceases to change whilst somehow remaining reassuringly familiar; a part that, whenever I close my eyes, wherever I am in the world, I can see… and, more closely, feel. For me, those mountains have an energy and an atmosphere that is somehow alive. To paint them, in their ever-changing glory, is the best compliment I can pay to my old friends.

Passionate feast of Italian music BBC National Orchestra of Wales will be setting hearts on fire in Brecon this November, as they present a passionate feast of Italian music at Theatr Brycheiniog on Thursday 27 November, 7.30pm. With Italian maestro Francesco Angelico conducting (pictured above), this concert evokes the beauty and romance of Italy. The evening includes two fiery overtures from the stalwarts of Italian opera – Rossini’s comedy ‘The Barber of Seville’ and Verdi’s intensely dramatic ‘La Forza del Destino’.The wonderful soprano Ruby Hughes also joins the Orchestra, as she presents a selection of opera arias by Mozart and Rossini. The orchestra closes the concert by exploring Italy as a tourist – through the music of German composer Mendelssohn who wrote his fourth symphony whilst on holiday. It’s an uplifting piece full of joyous music - as Mendelssohn himself described in a letter to his sister, it’s “the jolliest piece I have ever done”. This concert, the first in Brecon since 2012, is a new addition to the Orchestra’s regular tours around Wales. Laura Sinnerton, viola player with BBC National Orchestra of Wales, is looking forward to the tour: “You can never count on clement weather on tour, but the stunning scenery and the enthusiasm and dedication of our audiences around Wales make each tour a pleasure. I’m particularly looking forward to hearing the beautiful soprano voice of Ruby Hughes - it’s sure to make for a great concert in Brecon!” Tickets for the Orchestra’s concert in Brecon are priced at £15 (discounts available), and are available by calling the Orchestra’s Audience Line on 0800 052 1812.Tickets can also be booked directly through the Theatr Brycheiniog Box Office on 01874 611622. or online.

Love Food Hate Waste Last year in Powys 24 double decker buses worth of food waste was sent to landfill! With the help of Love Food Hate Waste, residents can reduce food waste and save money. If you have a smart phone you can download the new Love Food Hate Waste App (available in English and Welsh) to help you keep track of food planning, shopping, cooking meals and making the most of your leftovers. The App also has lots of great recipe and tips for using forgotten foods and leftovers to make great tasting meals. To download the app visit the Google and iTunes store. Alternatively, visit the website www.lovefoodhatewaste.com Leftover tea and tea bags? You can use leftover tea to marinade meat before cooking, and even add used tea leaves to compost to help grow your plants. Tea can also effectively remove grease and grime on mirrors and floors, so use an old bag to make a cold brew, then use it as a cleaning solution. After you have used your teabags remember to recycle them using your council food waste recycling service, or compost it. Never put them in the rubbish bin. More tips like this can be found on the Love Food Hate Waste website (www.lovefoodhate.com)

News from Brecknock YFC

The 2014-2015 Young Farmers year has well and truly began. BRECON Poets:

Christmas 2014 - late March 2015 issue

PATRICIA DOUSE Originally from Trinidad, Patricia Douse now lives in Libanus and is active in the Brecon Speakers Club and the Brecon Political and Theological Discussion Group. She has recently commenced postgraduate studies in Religion at the Trinity Saint David University of Wales in Lampeter. Her poem below responds to Rabindranath Tagore’s poem entitled ‘A Hundred Years from Now’. A Hundred Years (or so) Ago A great deal of water has passed, Gently sometimes, more frequently in full ferocious flow, Under a variety of bridges, Of stone, timber, concrete, aluminium, painted steel, Since you composed a poem of joy and hope and humanity A century (or thereabouts) ago. Lord of the sun, you cast your light On nature’s ever-changing permanence. Despite The long decades of pain, the rain still forms, The leaf still trembles. Albeit that the floods Have become more troublesome, the leaves Less plentiful, the bees passed on, the forests Of Bengal but childhood memory. And yet A lover’s lips shall kiss away our tears.

And yet a poet, pulsating with inveterate vitality, His fingers tapping on the keyboard, much as The water droplets patter on high windows and Murmur through unseen and trackless channels To nourish new songs in similar gardens, Quenched by perpetual precipitation, he writes, He dispatches his paper boats and, Despite the Inhumane calamities, The flowers still unfold, As yours did then, some hundred years ago.
