Surrey County Show Stoke Park, Guildford, Surrey Monday 25th May 2015

et in Stoke Park, a glorious green space in the centre of Guildford, the Surrey County Show has a wonderful vibrant atmosphere, benefitting from the unusual mix of the traditional country show in the middle of a busy town. Whilst the horse classes dominate, there is a mixture of other livestock including, cows, sheep, goats and pigs, as well as prizes for poultry, floristry and honey. locals took advantage of the sunny weather to wander into the park with friends and family, reclining on the banks of the equestrian rings, while munching on the contents of picnic hampers filled with delicious looking delights. There was a fabulous family dog show as well as whole avenue of stands selling special treats for visiting canines. Having competed her wonderful cob, Horton’s Vortigern, at the Heathfield Show two days before, on Saturday, Dominique Pizzingrilli was wearing her other hat at the Surrey Show and was to be found spoiling customers who visited the ‘little Pet Biscuit’ shop. Dominique was later awarded a ‘Best Stand’ certificate by the trade stand judges.

Sussex-based breeder, jane Townshend, had a brilliant show when her horses stood Champion and Reserve in the Sports Horse Breeding Championship. It was the three-year-old chestnut gelding, Classictop laurianta, who took the top spot, ahead of the broodmare, Eustacia Vie. By lauriston, laurianta was bred from a mare called Meranta, who was a half-sister to the Irish Nations Cup team horse, Ringfort Cruise. Sadly jane lost Meranta shortly after laurianta was weaned, but still follows laurianta’s full-brother, Classictop lancelot, who is owned by Danny Fehler. Talking of laurianta, jane said: “He is the one horse on the yard that may get me riding again he has the best temperament but I would need to find someone to jump him!” jane bought the winning broodmare Eustacia Vie as a weanling from the llangaller Stud. By Catherston Dazzle the now 10-year-old, is out of the HOyS 2005 Cuddy Champion, Euphoria. jane said: “We showed her successfully as a young horse and she then went eventing winning at BE100 level. Injury stopped her eventing and this foal Classictop Miss Vivienne is her first by the stallion Silvester. This is the first foal for us by him and I have used him on another of our mares, Birthday Girl, as well as recovering Violet for 2016.” Spectator Leone May Ayres had a wonderful afternoon watching the action with her three-year-old Working Cocker Spaniel, Minnie

Woody and Buzz, owned by Osborne Refrigerators and driven by Alison Tucker

Surrey-based Balanced Horse Feeds Chaz and Dave, owned and driven by Charlotte Adams-Lane had a great show, winning the first of the afternoon’s competitions.

Clare Highnam’s ponies won two classes each to stand Champion and reserve in the Riding Pony Breeding classes. It was the two-year-old Hightopps Black N Gold, by Hightopps Hugo out of Hightopps Black Pearl who took the Championship over the fantastic broodmare, Hightopps China Doll. Now 15, China Doll, by Barkway Partytime has proved herself both as a ridden pony, qualifying for both the RIHS and HOYS in the Lead Rein classes as well as a broodmare. Sara Egan’s liver chestnut colt, Barkway Earlybird, headed the yearling class. By Beckside Little Toff out of Barkway Enigma, Sara bought Buzz, as he is known at home, unseen from a photograph on Facebook from the Barkway Stud. Sara said: “I had been looking to buy a colt to start my own show pony stud after having worked at the famous Rosevean Stud many years ago, and it was love at first sight. I had been following the Barkway Stud with a view to getting something for my four-year-old daughter to show, but I just had to have Buzz. Surrey County was his first show and it was in at the deep end. (He has since won at South of England as well, and he will have a break now before maybe doing another show or two later in the season.) He will stand at stud with us in Hampshire, and will hopefully follow in the footsteps of his famous father, who has produced many show pony champions in the ring. He is a real character and is so much fun to have about.”
