or the second year running Michelle Burnett’s Stockham Secret Envoy was South East Points Champion, winning the rug donated by John’s Cross Tack Room. The Welsh section B 11-year-old proved to be one of the top plaited working hunter ponies in the country and was again on the England team at the BSPS Championships, finishing second. He was also second at Royal Windsor, jumped clear at the Royal International and was Area 14 Points winner. The Rotherwood Secret Agents’ son qualified for Horse of the Year Show by winning at the South of England where he also stood Champion, and at HOYS also put in an excellent clear to finish second. This was 14-year-old Ella Dalton’s final year in 133cm working hunter ponies. She finished the season winning at the Heritage Championships and has since focussed on show jumping. They have been jumping 138cm British Showjumping winter qualifiers and are through to the second rounds. This year Ella will continue jumping Stockham Secret Envoy as well as competing in Mountain & Moorland Working Hunter Pony classes.
Twyford Good Friday Top heritage pony in the South East was Louise Stanford’s Twyford Good Friday, stable name Smartie. Although a former winner at the Royal International this was an incredible achievement for 12-year-old Ella Stanford who was in her first season in affiliated competition. Ella has been riding for a little over three years. Louise said: “We bought Smartie in November 2015 as her second pony, and she adored her. 2016 was Ella’s first ever WHP season and she had a lot to learn as she was competing against both juniors and adults in the Mountain and Moorland class. “Smartie was brilliant and very experienced and in their first year won an amazing amount of classes and championships including South of England where she qualified for HOYS, Kent County, as well as BSPS Summer Championships where they stood Champion twice and Overall Supreme WHP as well.” Ella also qualified for the Plaited Nursery Stakes at RIHS after winning her only attempted qualifier. “Smartie and Ella were just very happy and they gelled instantly, together they were a real partnership,” Louise added.
Laithehill Flute Laithehill Flute took the novice award. He joined Chloe and Lesley Chubb in March 2015 from the Moelview Stud as a four-yearold. Lesley said: “He was a very nervous little chap having undergone a major gelding operation. He had originally been purchased by Jane and Richard Jones (Moelview) as a potential stud stallion but having retained a testicle he had to be gelded. He looked so small when he arrived Chloe immediately said, ‘back him and sell him, he is too small for me!’ Olly and Jo Burchell worked their magic on him, backing him and gaining his confidence and Jo said ‘don’t be so quick to

sell him he will be a good one’. He was left to mature until 2016. We intended to just do novice classes, but he came on so well we entered a RIHS qualifier at Suffolk which he won and was Reserve Champion, and took the RIHS in his stride being placed equal eighth,” said Lesley. “With the introduction of the new HOYS Junior Class we felt that he was the perfect pony for this class and Chloe asked Kinvara Garner if she would like to ride him. As Kinvara lives in Shropshire she only sat on him at shows and to our delight at their third ever show, South of England he won and qualified for HOYS. HOYS was a big ask for our little ‘Barbie pony’ and Kinvara had not ridden him since June, however he took it all in his stride and they put in what we thought was a ‘foot perfect’ show and looked such a beautiful picture, we were both bursting with pride and very emotional when they stepped forward as the first ever winners at HOYS. They then had to go in the Supreme Pony where again he behaved impeccably.” Flute has now gone to a new home with South East rider Kate Hewson.
