O Crawley and Horsham Hunt Gate Jumping Competition Ring 4, Hickstead, East Sussex Photography by Julian Portch

n Saturday 3rd January 2015, Crawley and Horsham Hunt held a Hunt relay and Gate Jumping Competition in ring 4 at Hickstead. The day started at 8.30am with clear round jumping starting at 50cm and increasing in height throughout the morning. at 11.30am they started the Hunt relay Teams of Three. a fast paced competition, which saw two teams of three race side by side in the arena. each team’s three riders were all in the arena at the same time and as they finished their round they passed a hunt crop baton style within the start\finish box. The riders jumped a timed course of jumps that you would expect to see on a typical day’s hunting, approximately 90cm in height. around 30 teams took part in the competition which favoured event riders over show jumpers, with Tina Cook, Julia Martin and Harriet upton claiming the top spot. David Simpson (Olympia Puissance winner), Caroline Clarke and Grace Durkan finished second with Lucy blake, Georgia Canagon and Jo burdett, in third. The Novice Gate Jumping competition followed. Combinations had the chance to jump a practice fence then onto the gate. The starting height was about 60cm and it went up throughout the competition. This class was for riders 16 years and under. from 38 starters the class dwindled to just three in the final round, when the gate reached a staggering 140cm. It was a clear win for 16-yearold Crawley & Horsham Pony Club member, Lucy blake and Lop de Concelle, who were the only combination to jump clear, with the other two both refusing. What is even more amazing is 19-year-old Lop de Concelle is only 14.2hh. The Open Gate Jumping honours went to Marcus Gorman, who cleared an impressive 145cm.
