C

oombelands Equestrian Centre in West Sussex have been hosting a wonderful series of arena eventing challenges to kick start the 2017 equestrian calendar. The course for the arena eventing competitions consisted of a mixture of show jumps, working hunter jumps and cross country obstacles, with classes ranging across the show days from 60cm to 1m. These challenges are great winter competitions for competitors wishing to keep their horses competition fit, for preparing for the coming season or for those wishing to have a taste of something a little different to the normal just show jumping or cross country. Coombelands attracts good numbers to these events and they have a fine reputation for their calm and organised approach to shows. The show team is well led by Gaye Harwood, with the

grounds and arenas always well presented by the groundsmen. The weather in February was on the whole kind, with some rain, a little snow, but a lot of fine clear days with some glimpses of sunshine. The competitions were hotly contested, with some competitors travelling quite a distance to take part. Children based at Coombelands competed and secured good placings across the classes, with wins for Alice Crowley riding Billy in the 75cm on the 4th February and Ryan Perrett riding Barney in the 75cm on the 11th February. Lucy Aspell, daughter of Grand National Winner Leyton Aspell, won the 85cm on the 11th February riding Frosty. Local girls Morgan Donavan and Ella Bubb also had good results, with wins for both of them accompanied by some good placings.
