he best months are the busiest months and this one has been just that. Since we last went to print I have been to the Hisktsead Derby Meeting, met the British eventing team heading to the World Equestrian Games and interviewed the wonderfully charming, yet fiercely determined young showjumper, Oscar Stewart. It was refreshing to interview a young man, who at just 16 has set himself a goal and is doing everything within his capabilities not to be distracted from achieving it. Read more about Oscar on page 14. Every month I am impressed by the variety of disciplines our readers compete in and this month we must be approaching a record. We have reports covering showjumping, dressage, eventing, TREC, driving, side saddle and showing. Plus we have some wonderful stories about ex-racehorses, as well as our regular Ex-Racehorse News (see page 44), we also have the story of Victoria Spicer’s mare, Regalo Rosado, better known as Rosie, who has adapted to life off the track and is excelling in all three disciplines, winning rosettes in dressage and jumping clear around her first BE event. Turn to page 54 and I dare you not to fall in love with Rosie. Our reporters have been out and about this month and we have some wonderful reports from the New Forest Riding Club Show (page 56), Horsham & District Riding Club Show (page 60), The South East Welsh Pony & Cob Association (page 58), plus the Area 8 Side Saddle Show (page 32). Stand out from the crowd In the midst of the show season how do you stand out from the others? That little bit of extra topline, balance and swinging paces coupled with lightness and power can make the difference in a line-up with many impressive horses. In all classes a horse with a lovely topline, suppleness and balance will stand out. Lungeing can help to achieve this. Long reins or a training aid such as the EquiAmi lungeing aid are very effective in getting a horse working through his back, improving balance and paces and lightness whilst developing topline. Huge amounts of time can be saved as a twenty minute gymnastic session on the lunge can be the equivalent of forty minutes under saddle. Forage Analysis Service Countrywide, the UK’s largest equestrian specialist, have launched a new Forage Analysis Service to allow equestrian customers to formulate more accurate feeding plans. “Hay and haylage make up a large proportion of a horse’s daily feed intake, but every harvest is different and all too often we are not fully aware of its nutritional value or how it fits in with the rest of the feed plan,” says Leonie Ibberson, Countrywide Account Manager and Equine Nutrition Specialist. By measuring protein levels, metabolisable energy, minerals and trace elements in hay and haylage, the analysis allows customers to feed the right amounts of forage to their horses, whether they are good doers, performance horses or horses which are hard to keep weight on. “Each horse’s diet should be bespoke,” confirms Leonie, “taking into account all of their inputs - from pasture, dried forage and concentrates to the nutrients they receive through licks, supplements and balancers. For us to develop accurate feeding plans we must know the value of forage.” The new forage analysis service offers two levels of analysis and is available to order through Countrywide stores or via dedicated Account Managers. Customers are provided with a sample bag for their hay/ haylage, which should be returned to the store or their Account Manager. Within two weeks the analysis results, and an accompanying report, will be ready. The information provided is then best discussed with a nutritional expert. “Our specialists can help customers to make the most of their results by supplementing the analysis with free feeding plan advice,” says Leonie. “This will cover forage, pasture and concentrate intake and takes into account the type and condition of the horse or pony. Workload and temperament are also factors that need to be considered.”

he British Jumping Derby at Hickstead has thrown up some dramatic stories since it was started by the late Douglas Bunn 54 years ago. There was victory for 20-year-old Marion Coakes on her pony Stroller in 1967 and for 60-yearold Nelson Pessoa on Loro Piana Vivaldi in 1996. There have been riders falling from the top to the bottom of the Derby Bank, and most famous of all, Harvey Smith’s V-sign to the Master of Hickstead, Duggie Bunn, when he won back the Derby Trophy on Mattie Brown in 1971 after failing to return it following his 1970 victory. This June Irishman Trevor Breen wrote another historic chapter of the Equestrian.com Derby when he became the first to win this unique contest, which carries a total prize fund of £115,000, on a one-eyed horse, Adventure de Kannan, who had his right eye removed a year ago after a long term infection.

After a first round of thrills, spills and nine eliminations with nobody going clear, the two 4-faulters, both drawn near the end of the 35 strong field, disputed the closest ever two way jump-off. The 2013 winners Philip Miller and Caritiar Z going for the double, challenged first, but caught the first part of the Devil’s Dyke in a fast 85.19 seconds. This gave Breen the chance he needed, but posed the problem of whether he should try for a steady clear and risk losing out if Addy faulted, or chase the time and pray the fences stayed put. He started carefully, but when the pole in front of the privet oxer

fell, he steamed onwards and inched home just 0.02 seconds ahead. Breen, 35, based at Gerrards Cross in Buckinghamshire, but Tipperary born like his brother Shane, who lives at Hickstead, said afterwards: “Addy is a real legend. Whether he can or can’t he tries his heart out to do everything I ask, even if it is beyond him. He loves adversity.” The 14-year-old’s notable Hickstead record includes equal second in the 2013 Derby, third in the 2012 Derby, victory in the 2009 Speed Derby and the 2012 Eventers Grand Prix. Preparation this year was severely interrupted when he tweaked a hind suspensory ligament and owner Karen Swann, a vet, organised rehab with swimming and work in water to get him fit in time. And to crown it all Addy was kicked on the hind leg in the warm-up arena on Saturday, the day before the Derby. “He has made a phenomenal recovery,” said Breen. Miller admitted: “I probably got “Carter” too fit in the run-up to Hickstead, as I was struggling to hold him and he towed me all the way round. I thought I was fast enough in the jump off, but after Trevor had that pole down he was off like a rocket. It was Trevor’s day and he deserved it.” The initial circuit was dominated, as so often, by problems at the aptly named Devil’s Dyke, the enclosed treble of rails with the middle element over a sunken water ditch, which caused 25 of the field to collect faults. James Hughes was unshipped from Peiter VI at the ditch, Joe Clayton, one of the Whitaker clan, on Ingliston Twister and Tim Page on Duc d’Arsouilles were both eliminated there and Derby debutante Kayleigh Watts hit the deck when Red Lady caught her legs in the rails.

Katie Jerram and Night Prayers took the Nettex Supreme Hack Championship, pictured with Serena Kidd, Business Manager at Nettex recorded the Derby’s 53rd clear round in 2013, were high as he and “Carter” set off and after leaving a brick wobbling on the edge of the wall, went on in style over the Derby Bank and the Dyke to survive another chance when landing close to the tape at the water, but their luck ran out with a strong run to the following Derby rails, which came down. Miller and his 14-yearold grey stallion finished with four faults to take the lead to much applause from the crowd, but three rounds later Breen and Addy equalled this with a mistake into the Dyke to force a jump-off. A pair that looked full of promise, Charlotte Platt and Carlow Cruiser, came to grief when they twisted on landing at the Derby rails, causing Platt to be hurled off and taken away with a bad knee injury. William Whitaker’s challenge on Glenavadra Brilliant went into joint third with a pole down at the fence below the Derby Bank and the Derby rails. The last to go, Ireland’s Captain Michael Kelly and Dollanstown, finished with 13 faults leaving

The first promising round came from Jade Hooke on her 17-year-old Namibian bred A New Era, the winner of two South African Derbys, who took the lead on eight faults after a mistake at the second fence and the first part of the Dyke. Guy Williams was eliminated on 2010 winner Skip Two Ramiro after a step back on top of the Bank and a refusal at the bottom, and again on Depardieu van T Kiezelhof at the middle of the Dyke, but the up and coming Somerset rider Harriet Nuttall joined Hooke in the lead with a pole down at 3b, the second of the water ditch double and the first part of the Dyke, on her giant-sized Irish bred, A Touch Imperious. Nuttall, 24, whose father Rupert is a Joint Master of the Blackmore & Sparkford Vale Hunt in Somerset and the last amateur to win the Whitbread (Bet 365) Gold Cup in 1997 on Harwell Lad, recently made a significant step-up in her showjumping career as part of Britain’s winning Nations Cup team at Copenhagen. A chance for Grand National winning jockey Robert Power (2007 on Silver Birch) the son of former top Irish international rider Con Power, to attempt a momentous double, vanished when Doonaveeragh O One, who had only made one error in Friday’s Derby Trial, had five down to drop right back. So hopes for Miller, who

The talented Kent rider Guy Williams was at his brilliant best to take the Bunn Leisure Speed Derby on a horse new to Derby type special obstacles, Casper de Muze, who outpaced Harriet Nuttall and Silver Lift by over two seconds. Bold as they come, Casper de Muze was astonished by the Irish Bank, but took it and some turf as well, with gusto, then, checked by Williams, met the line of single planks with complete accuracy, despite being minus a shoe after the earlier road fence. Williams explained: “He won in St.Gallen and Lummen and I brought him to Hickstead especially for this Speed Derby, so I am delighted. “Williams had bought the Belgian bred 12-year-old last December, and they won eight out of nine classes in Spain on this year’s early Spring circuit. “My big worry in this Speed Derby after going ahead, was my former mare Belinka, who is now with Richard Howley, and I was most relieved when they had a couple of mistakes,” added Williams.

Although Ireland’s Billy Twomey on Royale du Rouet and Will Funnell on Billy Mexico looked well able to forge ahead, first Jay Halim shot through on Goodman For Fun II, then he was immediately pushed aside by 19-yearold Derry rider Daniel Coyle on Zuidam, a chestnut stallion he had earlier owned, sold on, and then bought back again.

Katie Jerram, the outstandingly successful show rider from Great Dunmow, Essex, won the Nettex Supreme Hack Championship on Night Prayers, a 10-year-old Retrained Racehorse who had taken first in the Large Hacks. Jerram revealed that the lovely liver chestnut had won over 2 and a half miles on the Flat on The Curragh when trained by Brian Smart, and ended up in Wales in a Happy Hackers Home. “Steve and Vicki Pitts bought him from there, they saw him and liked him,” explained Miss Jerram, “and I saw him with the Pitts as Vicki is my Aunt, and bought him the next day. I plan to do some Intermediate Show Riding type classes with him, he is very low maintenance!”

SPOTLIGHT Captured by Oscar Stewart’s passion and enthusiasm for the sport of showjumping, Fiona Rafferty visited him at home in Hampshire to discover more about the determined young man, who is making the leap from school boy to showjumper.

itting in the kitchen of his family home, near Winchester, 16-year-old Oscar Stewart spoke with a raw honesty of his determination to make showjumping his profession. Since sitting his GCSEs earlier this summer Oscar has been concentrating on training and competing his seven-year-old mare, Rumbolds Phoebe, who he bought earlier this year. Known as Phoebe at home, she is by Caretino Glory and her dam is by Corland, who has Cor de la Bryere, Landgraf and Ladykiller in his bloodlines and looking at the pictures of Phoebe jumping she has definitely inherited their scope and talent. It is clear Phoebe is the current love of Oscar’s life as he earnestly recounts seeing and jumping her for the first time. She flew round 1.20m and Oscar said he fell in love with her then and knew instantly he wanted her. The days couldn’t pass quickly enough as he waited for the results of her vetting. Oscar believes in the importance of correct training and when I met up with him in mid July he had just returned from two weeks training with George Whitaker, which included trips to South View in Cheshire and the CSI** show at Keysoe.

Oscar first approached George about training with him, when they were stabled opposite each other at the New Forest Show last summer. With George’s busy schedule competing abroad it took Oscar several months to track him down, but eventually he Oscar jumping Hannington to the Point at the English Home Pony International 2013

arranged to go for a week just before Christmas. He managed a visit of ten days earlier in the year and this last stay of nearly two weeks. George is based at his parents Ian and Alison’s yard near Huddersfield. Also based there are George’s eldest brother, William, William’s girlfriend, Elisabeth, George’s girlfriend, Alice and his younger brother James, who is the same age as Oscar. In his relaxed companionable way Oscar has easily adapted to the life of the Whitaker clan. He joined the boys, plus Donald and Tom Whitaker, Matt Sampson, Graham Gillespie and Joe Clayton to watch the world cup and has also played at their Thursday night kick around. Every Thursday the Whitakers rent a football pitch and play a few games amongst themselves. Oscar clearly loves his time with George, riding a couple out for him before his lesson on Phoebe, when they will concentrate on pole work, grids and striding. But it would appear top of the agenda every morning is a coffee-break and a dose of Jeremy Kyle.

Aiming for an Advanced Apprenticeship

Oscar’s main focus this summer has been to jump consistent double clears at 1.20m and above in the hope that he might be accepted for the Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence, which is a combined opportunity between British Showjumping and Haddon Training Ltd. The Apprenticeship covers all aspects of a professional athlete’s career. It develops the technical and tactical skills and also ensures they are well prepared to deal with the wider challenges of a career in show jumping. The places are limited and whilst Oscar is optimistic he has reached the right criteria, he knows if he isn’t accepted this year that hopefully he will be a stronger candidate in 2015. Oscar has regular flat work lessons with South African dressage rider Denise Hallion, who he describes as fantastic and said after his mother, Sally, convinced him to have lessons with Denise, “my riding went through the roof.” Oscar also has weekly lessons with Stuart Harvey.

Oscar lives at home with his parents Sally and Alastair Stewart and the youngest of his three elder siblings, Fred, who is also an accomplished show jumper and runs several joint enterprises with Oscar. Their father is the ITV Newscaster Alastair Stewart, who is also the Ambassador for British 14 Localrider AUGUST 2014

Showjumping, a voluntary role he took on at the end of 2011 to raise the profile of the sport. Alastair met his wife Sally, a former television production assistant, when they were both working for Southern Television. Even their courtship involved horses, as they would hire horses and go riding in the New Forest. The eldest of the couple’s four children, Alex, 32, works for the Metropolitan Police and has missed the horse bug altogether, but Clemmie, 29, who is a school teacher in Aldershot has ridden since she was six and still keeps her mare, Harriet, who is now 23 at the family yard. Oscar has an impressive work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit for a 16-year-old boy who has just taken his exams. He repeats several times through the interview: “I will do anything to get to the top.” Aware in the absence of owners that it is a tough sport to conquer, he has his own plan to fund his riding, which involves developing a number of businesses in the hope that a few will fly.

These enterprises are all currently co-run with his brother Fred, with whom Oscar has developed a harmonious synergy, even where the horses are concerned. Fred enjoys finding and producing the horses, whereas Oscar prefers competing them. There was not even a glint of sibling jealousy as Fred told me that he hoped one day to find Oscar a world class horse. These are exciting times for the Stewart boys, their current businesses include UK Sport Horses, a website listing quality horses for sale, which they have sourced through contacts across Europe and Capalli Clothing, which is British designed preppy style clothing aimed at equestrians. The main drive behind this was to provide young men with sensible outdoor clothing, minus the bling. And as I waved goodbye Oscar and Fred were busy transforming lumps of wood into jump poles, which they sell and it appears this is one enterprise where demand is outstripping supply. Oscar’s dreams and ambitions are big. If the logistics work he will join George on the Spanish Sunshine Tour next February and then there are hopes of jumping at Scope, the Horse of the Year Show and Olympia. With George’s mantra, “If you think you have enough canter kick on and everything else will follow.” ringing in his ear, one hopes Oscar’s determination and dedication will start to pay dividends and we will see a lot more of this charismatic young showjumper.

Does your horse rush its cross country fences? This is a common problem and one that can mean the difference between being in the ribbons at the end of an event, or missing a placing due to penalties. There are lots of factors to consider when your horse is too fast, for example fit of the tack, suitability of the bit, excessive ‘hotheadeadness’ due to dietary sugars, and a lack of relevant training. You will be able to address these issues by seeking professional advice, but here are some tips to help you establish an obedient pace through flatwork training. Here we share some top tips:

set up two fences, and train the horse to come back to trot for a few strides in between them, and then pick up canter again – eventually it will become merely an adjustment of the canter pace, and trot will not be needed. this is usually a more effective way of developing transitions within a pace for a jumping horse than simply doing lots of transitions without fences in the arena.

Train the horse to come back to trot in between two fences in the arena; you can transfer this obedience to the cross country course.

If your horse is strong or excitable over his fences, a good practise technique is to return to working on a circle, initially a small one, spiralling to a larger one as you regain control. When doing this, be sure to turn away from the next fence in good time, and do not allow the horse to approach it; we must not in any way teach him he may stop or run out, once he is presented at an obstacle.

It is important that if flagged down by an official on an XC course, you are able to come down through your paces to walk or halt, until safe to proceed. Practise in the arena by halting at specific letters, starting at the lower gaits, and then building up to halting from canter, with as few steps of trot and walk as you can muster. use your upper body to influence the downward transition as you would on an XC course.

Bitting success If finding ‘brakes’ is an issue, don’t always reach for a ‘strong’ bit. You may have success with one that addresses the issue of the horse using his tongue to push against the bit and ‘take hold’. It has a 45 mm central lozenge, which gives a small surface area. Consequently, a horse using his tongue as a means of pushing against the bit and therefore taking control will draw back and tuck his chin in, coming back to a better point of control. (Also, this versatile bit is ‘Dressage Legal’, meaning you don’t need to change the bridle if you are jumping different disciplines in one day.) It has been revealed that Badminton winner Sam Griffiths and the co-owner of the winning horse, Paulank Brockagh, can partly attribute the pair’s impressive recent performances to this bit. Sam’s groom Imogen Mercer takes up the story. “The horse’s new bit represents a success story for us. Our co-owner Dinah Posford found Bombers bits just before Badminton Horse Trials; for a while now, we have struggled with Paulank Brockagh being sensitive in the mouth - she is always trying to get her tongue over the bit! Since using the new Bombers Elliptical Loose Ring in the dressage element, we have had no more issues with her and she immediately did a personal best at 4* at Badminton Horse Trials. This mare LOVES the bit and we will be of course using it from now on with her,” Imogen says. any barefooted horses will benefit from wearing hoof boots, especially through the transitionary phase after de-shoeing, and sometimes beyond, for example if extra shock absorption is required over challenging surfaces. But if you thought they were a modern invention, you’d be mistaken! There’s little published documented material about the use of hoof boots throughout history, however we do know from the book ‘A Handbook to Life in Medieval and Early Modern Japan’, by William E. Deal, that a type of straw hoof boot was widely used by the Japanese military in the 19th Century Orient, to give traction and protect the feet. In Europe, the Romans are widely acknowledged to have used strap-on, solid-bottomed sandals called ‘hipposandals’ to protect feet from wear, but the more conventional, covered hoof boot that we know and love seems to have made its first appearance over here in the 19th Century, when European farm workers and draught horse owners tasked saddlers to create leather hoof boots to provide traction for working horses who were farming the land or delivering goods. The Museum of Leathercraft in Northampton has some large hoof boots in its collection that “Promoted healthy hooves, while allowing for expansion and contraction of the hoof. They were used to increase grip over all types of terrain, and on uneven and slippery surfaces such as cobbled streets.” The Weald and Downland Open Air Museum in Chichester also has some leather draught hoof boots in its archives, which have been donated by local land owners, and are said to be 19th century in origin. We have pictured some here - one pair even has beautiful leather detailing for decorative purposes.

Lawn boots for donkeys

The ancient leather boots housed at the Museum of Leathercraft in Northampton and the Weald and Downland Open Air Museum in Chichester also match the descriptions of so-called 19th and 20th century ‘lawn boots’, that were used by horse and pony owners to protect their lawns from churning hooves, or for donkeys to wear when they pulled a lawn mower (Ruth Brennan wrote a 1991 paper on ancient ‘nurserymen’s catalogues’ for the National Botanical Gardens, entitled ‘Lawn Boots for Donkeys’.) This suggests that after buckled boots found success with heavy horses, they were utilised for smaller riding horses and donkeys as well. Claire Smith of the University of Reading cites Lawn Boots as being used from around the 1850s, when horse-drawn lawn mowers were introduced. “There are several pairs of lawn shoes in the Museum for English Rural Life, mainly for horses, but also some smaller ones which were probably used for donkeys or ponies. They were commonly made from leather, and padded on the inside with wool. They would have been strapped around the horse’s hooves and fastened with the buckles,” she states in an article on the University of Reading’s website, also noting that turkeys and pigs would also wear leather boots, for their long walks to market!

Technology advances

While leather was a strong, accessible and long-lasting material, it wasn’t until the late 1960’s that nuclear physicist Dr Neel Glass invented the first modern hoof boot as we know it. They became available to the public in 1970s and since then the phenomenon has really taken off, notably thanks to manufacturer EasyCare, which pioneered the earliest modern hoof boots, and utilises many different polyurethane blends in its manufacture. Worm control takes another step forward

his summer sees the launch of a revolutionary new test for tapeworm, great news for all horse owners. Westgate Labs are delighted to offer all customers the new EquiSal saliva test. EquiSal Tapeworm is a laboratory test service developed and run by Austin Davis Biologics Ltd (ADB) at their laboratory in Northamptonshire. It is the first test of its kind that uses saliva to give an accurate, cost effective measure of a horse’s tapeworm burden. It is hoped that the new test will make routine testing for tapeworm much more accessible to horse owners, improving horse health and enabling targeted worming to help combat drug Westgate Labs can now offer clients an EquiSal saliva test for tapeworm resistance. The EquiSal Tapeworm Test has been created by a team of experienced scientists, one of whom was an inventor of the Clear Blue pregnancy test. They identified a need to improve the detection of tapeworm infection, a parasite that can cause significant health problems in horses, to aid effective control. Previously the only other definitive test for tapeworm has been via blood taken by the vet.

Simple saliva swab

To complete the new EquiSal test, a sample of the horse’s saliva is taken using a specially developed swab. This is sent off to the EquiSal laboratory where the level of tapeworm-specific antibodies is analysed to give an accurate indication of the tapeworm burden in the horse. In scientific terms, the EquiSal Tapeworm Test has both high sensitivity and specificity, which is important for correctly identifying horses with tapeworm burdens. Commenting on the new test, David Booth, Managing director at Westgate Laboratories said: “We are very excited about this development and are delighted to be working with Austin Davis Biologics to bring the test to horse owners. This will revolutionise the way we worm for tapeworm in horses. Worm counts and saliva testing must now become the core of everyone’s worming programme if we are to preserve the few effective wormers we have left.”

Interesting numbers

Dr Corrine Austin, director at Austin Davis Biologics Ltd, reported: “From our experience so far, it appears that the number of horses with a tapeworm burden is lower than expected. Only 19% of horses tested had a tapeworm burden requiring treatment. This percentage is even lower in well managed yards. Many animals are being over-wormed for tapeworm when routine dosing strategies are used. Routine dosing increases the speed at which worms gain resistance, and with only two drugs licenced for tapeworm in horses, this should be a major concern to horse owners. We are very pleased to be partnering with Westgate Laboratories and we are looking forward to providing a comprehensive worm control programme together”. An EquiSal Tapeworm Test kit costs £17.95 per horse and contains everything needed to take the test including laboratory processing and the customary help and advice from Westgate Laboratories. Current advice is to test twice a year at six monthly intervals and a minimum of four months after the last tapeworm dosing. Gillian Booth of Westgate Labs says: “At last we have an easy to do, reliable test for tapeworm with no need to involve your vet.

Simply add the test to your normal worm count pattern and no need to give routine tapeworm wormers any more unless the result indicates you need to. Tapeworm can cause dangerous colic in horses. As with other worms they seem to affect some horses more than others for unknown reasons.

Why not just worm ‘in case’?

Worming may not work and resistance is a growing problem. The pony in the picture had been wormed with praziquantel in March yet still had a high reading for tapeworm when tested a few months later, which we would not have expected. When planning your worm control you should start with routine testing rather than routine worming. Building a Yard... from Scratch! W

hether you are starting with a completely blank canvas or have a basic infrastructure to work with, designing and building a new yard is exciting. However, it is important not to become wrapped up in the exciting finishing touches too early on and to take time to consider what you want from your new yard. take a big piece of paper and draw two columns, heading one likes and the other dislikes. then think of all the yards you know or have visited and write down the things that you think have worked well, as well as those that have frustrated you. If you are short of inspiration head to the internet, where as well as lots of general information it is possible to have a virtual tour (by looking at the pictures) around most of the yards owned and run by the world’s leading riders.

The essentials

Depending on your budget it may be necessary to develop your yard in phases. armed with your research start imagining how your new yard will look and operate and once you are happy write down a new list including fixtures and fittings. For example under stables you might write automatic water supply and rubber matting. there may be some items which are on your wish list for the future, such as solarium, horse walker, by including these now you can include them in your designs, so that when you do add them they are in the right place.

Own experiences

You will also discover from your own experiences what works well and what could do with improving. If something really isn’t working try and find out if there is something that can be done to fix it. sometimes problems are seasonal. One reader found the guttering around her stables was constantly over-flowing in heavy rain, but the addition of an extra down pipe solved the problem and there was no more flooding.

Arena matters

When considering the size of an arena and the type of surface you require take advice from as many arena companies as you can. traditionally arenas were 20m by 40m, but if you are intending to use your arena on a daily basis or are jumping regularly you may wish to consider something bigger. the type of surface you choose will also depend on what you are using the arena for, how often, plus your budget. arena and gallop company Equestrian Direct emphasise that the after-care and maintenance of equine arenas is extremely important to ensure a level, compact and even surface and to enhance the performance and longevity of your investment. Planning Permission

Most stable blocks and arenas, unless replacing existing buildings, like for like, will require planning permission. stable and arena companies are used to helping customers complete the application form and will be able to guide you through the process. If you are building a completely new yard with new stables and a new arena you will probably need to send in one application for everything you plan to change. If you don’t have a building surveyor who is involved in other areas of your property, then chat it through with

the companies you are planning to work with, they should be able to advise you and ensure nothing is missed from the application.

Rubber surfaces

Increasingly one sees rubber walkways at competitions and events. achesham hosted its second successful Nettex Dressage Festival during the first weekend in July. Nettex is a global supplier of animal health products and Pachesham was proud to again organise the Festival in conjunction with the company, which provided exciting ‘goody bags’ for the competitors. The Festival was the culmination of a year of dressage competition. Championship classes were held for competitors who had qualified for the Unaffiliated (Championship A) and Affiliated (Championship B) at Pachesham during the previous year. The competitors on Saturday had to deal with the vagaries of a British summer, particularly those competing for the Nicola Homer Walk and Trot Championship judged by Suzanne Holt and Mary Williams. They contended with driving rain, but still produced a closely fought competition. The champion was Pachesham based Blossom Grant riding her own 13-year-old Topper the South.

Highest score of the day The Prelim A&B Championships were judged by Adele BurtonCantley and Vicky Fry. By this time the weather improved, providing more comfortable riding conditions. The Championship A was won by Karen Blackman riding her mare, Lady. Karen also won a framed photograph from Berta Images for the highest score for the day, she achieved a great score of 72.69%. The Championship B was won by Christina Dodd riding her eightyear-old Dales stallion, Broscoe Samuel.

Alfie proves a great catch ride The Novice A&B championships were judged by Vanessa Mitchell and Hazel Wells. The A Championship was won by Susan Brougham on her daughter’s 13-year-old horse, Alfie. Sue said she was having great fun riding her daughter Caroline’s horse whilst she is recovering from surgery. The B championship was won by Juliet Gurassa riding her eightyear-old grey mare, Just A Whisper. She was delighted as she had known the Italian bred mare since she was a foal.

The sun shone on Sunday Sunday proved to be much better day weather wise with the sun making longer appearances. The Elementary A&B Championships were judged by Adele Burton-Cantley and Suzanne Holt. The A Championship was won by Lorri Ould riding her smart grey, Keriko Sinia and the B Championship was won by Lynne Walkling riding Helen and Mandy Ellott’s 10-year-old, Ben III. Lynne also won the Berta Images framed photograph prize, for the highest score of the day on Sunday, 69.82%. The Medium, Advanced Medium and Advanced Championship classes were judged by list 2 judge Sue Rowlands. Lynne Walkling had further success winning the Medium Championship on Ben III. The Advanced Medium Championship was won by Clare Leggat riding her own mare T’s Sapphire. Clare was delighted with the win as the mare has had a difficult year. The final class of the day was the Advanced Championship, which was won by Jen Murphy and Haysden Nirvana. How do I know if the course is right for me?

Working with Horses

Do you spend all day dreaming of working with horses? Have you taken your GCSEs or A’levels and are wondering what to do next? If the answer to either of these questions is “yes” then a course at one of the local equestrian colleges could set you on a career path working with horses.

adlow College, near Tonbridge in Kent offers a variety of courses ranging from Level 1 Diploma up to degree level at both its Hadlow and Greenwich campuses. The Level 1 diploma requires students to attend college three days a week for a period of one year. This highly practical course is an ideal starting point for those students with little or no formal qualifications. The course includes horse welfare, how to ride a horse on the flat and over fences, stable management and working with horses from the ground. The degree course in Equine Management covers all aspects of equine management and equips graduates with

the necessary skills to run their own equine business. Structured to allow students to pursue a programme which reflects their experiences and interests, the course is a mix between theory and practical outside demonstrations, visits and seminars. Studies also include the training and breeding of horses, equine science and estate management.

One of the greatest frustrations in choosing a career path, while you are still at school is not knowing about all the wonderful interesting jobs there are and where your chosen qualification might lead you. Having a good equine qualification could lead to positions working all around the world and with experience, lead to any number of roles in ancillary companies, working in the fields of equine rehabilitation, equine nutrition or even working behind the scenes at equine events and shows. If you have an idea of what you would like to do try and speak to people who are already working in that position. For example if you would like to be an event groom try and speak to a groom at an event to find out what qualifications they have and any advice they can give you about college and finding a job afterwards. If you are approaching someone unannounced check that they have five minutes to talk to you and if they don’t, ask if there is a convenient time for you to talk later. Most riders and their staff are contactable via email, facebook or twitter, but do this privately and politely. If you ask the right questions they may also be able to advise if they have any knowledge of the local colleges and the courses they provide.

Work experience

Work experience and good references will be important when you are looking for a job. Try and gain as much experience as you can working in your holidays. Sometimes you have to make opportunities for yourself. If you want to work in a particular discipline such as showing and you are able to work even for a week voluntarily for a top show producer, make the most of the opportunity. Watching when you are not working and asking about anything you don’t understand. Remember to leave a good impression, because even years down the line that connection could make the difference to whether you get your dream job or not. When you have done your research and have decided which course will suit you best speak to the college you hope to attend about the course you have chosen. They will be able to reassure you that you have made the correct choice or guide you to consider a more suitable one.

Where we are situated there is a lack of local competitions, which made me think of holding affiliated show jumping shows. I approached British Showjumping and said that I was thinking about holding affiliated show jumping. They sent someone out to come and see the property and assess whether we have suitable facilities. From that moment in 2013, I booked two dates in the diary for 2014, 7th July and 9th August. I discovered that going to a show as a rider is very different from running a show. The next task was to decide what classes to choose, so that that we can cater every level. I had to apply for qualifying classes and was allocated two Scope Qualifiers. I was very pleased with this as I didn’t expect to be allocated two. I then was able to put the schedules together. I had to take into account all the rules and regulations of each class, which I had to research in detail. British Showjumping was very helpful in directing me how to go about doing this. Once we had established the schedule and website it was time to focus on preparing the farm for the show. I wanted to make sure it was immaculate leaving a good lasting impression which I hope was achieved. On the show day it was a very hot day. I wanted to make sure the surface in the school was kept level for every class. I watered the school the night and the morning of the show, but with this current heat wave I was concerned the surface may be an issue, but I made sure I harrowed after 25 horses and every class. Although this was time consuming it was worth it. As this was my first show I have learnt that I need to take into consideration the weather and how this will affect the surface. If we are to experience this level heat for the next show I plan to hire a water bowser to ensure the surface will be perfect the entire day. Alison and I had great support from the liveries, family and friends it was a great team effort and without them the show would not of been such a success. The 17hh, 12-yearold Hungarian warmblood gelding has struggled with intermittent lameness in his off fore for the last couple of years, with the pair just getting going before the problem would reoccur. In September last year, Anita decided enough was enough, so she went to the local veterinary practice to try and establish a cause for the lameness. The vet looked at all the possible reasons for the lameness, and nerve blocked Wurzel to try and establish the cause, but without any luck. Taking the situation further Wurzel was referred to Bell Equine Veterinary Clinic in Maidstone, Kent and due to the history of lameness he was sent straight for a Hallmarq MRI scan.

and when you loose school him he stretches down, whereas before he would hollow and be reluctant to move forward. Riding him was the same, he would hollow and argue, now his transitions are fluent and he really enjoys working. He is now doing work I never could have achieved before. Before I bought Wurzel I lost a horse due to lameness problems, so I was dreading the results of the MRI. I am delighted that MRI enabled such an accurate diagnosis, resulting in a happy sound horse. Wurzel is such a lovely sweet clever horse, I am so pleased we have made life easier for him. Now we have a better idea with what’s wrong in his legs we can manage it correctly. Nowadays he is a super upgraded version of the horse I had before and without the MRI scanning we would have constantly been going around in circles.”

What is an MRI Scan?

An MRI scan relies on a peculiar quantum property of the hydrogen atom. Hydrogen is a part of everything in the body; in particular it is part of the water molecule (the H in H2O) and of fat. The nucleus of the hydrogen atom has the commonly understood properties of mass and electric charge, and also another called spin. Spin causes the nucleus to wobble when placed in a magnetic field, much like a spinning top will wobble under the influence of gravity. MRI physicists since the 1950’s have learned how to manipulate these wobbles. By synchronising many different atoms together the effect is made strong enough to detect by radio waves. Using electric coils to change the magnetic field in different places shows where exactly the signal is coming from. And the time it takes for the wobbles to build up and decay away can be used to distinguish fat from water. The end result, from a single examination of a horse’s foot, is about 500 different black-and-white images showing slices in different places and different directions, with bright and dark areas relating to different fat and water content. These images are interpreted by an experienced vet who knows where fat and water would be in the normal animal, and so can detect any abnormalities. The unusual presence of water is particularly significant as swelling and uptake of water is a common response of the body to injury. Today MRI is routinely accepted as the best way to see inside the hoof of a lame animal.

Wurzel’s diagnosis

The MRI clearly diagnosed Wurzel’s lameness as being due to damage to the navicular bones in both front feet. There were also associated changes in the deep digital flexor tendon (DDFT), the distal sesamoidean impar ligament (DSIL), coffin joint and the collateral ligaments of the coffin bone. With an accurate diagnosis reached, the next step was to get Wurzel on the road to recovery. The treatment consisted of remedial shoeing and medicating his coffin joints on his forelegs. he sun may have got his hat on, but beware the sun may have turned the ground to concrete and your horse’s hooves brittle - both factors that can lead to lameness. However, these problems can be prevented with good hoof care, as Gil Riley, veterinary expert for the specialist equine insurer, Petplan Equine explains. Of all the veterinary problems that come through our clinic, 14% are for lameness, 95% of which are in the front limbs that carry the majority of horse’s weight and are most prone to concussion injury. Petplan Equine reports that 45% of claims received are for lameness. Statistics like these bear out the importance of taking precautionary measures to keep your horse sound.

Weight-bearing

The weight-bearing hoof wall can be worn down on hard ground so the sole takes more concussion, leading to “foot soreness”. To prevent wall wear and tear, a horse working on hard ground should be shod on all four feet, or at least the front feet, which bear more weight than the hind.

Ins and outs of cracking

Dry weather can lead to horn that is prone to cracking. Some cracks are incidental while others can run deep from the sole to the coronet. Known as ‘sandcracks’ these are painful and may require remedial shoeing. To reduce the likelihood of sand cracks: (i) Apply hoof moisturiser to the horn daily, thus making it more pliable. (ii) Feed a hoof supplement rich in the amino acids cysteine and methionine, Biotin and Zinc so good quality horn is produced.

Balance

A well-balanced foot evenly distributes forces of concussion. Poor hoof balance - especially long toes, collapsed heels or flat feet means concussive forces are not absorbed well and the foot does not “break over” into the next stride, which can lead to cracking. The period between shoeings should be determined by how quickly the horn is growing so any conformation change resulting from growth can be corrected before it causes potentially damaging imbalances.

Stones

BE leads the way in safety ruling

Neselius’s studies go hand in hand with British Eventing’s relatively recent change to its rules, which state that all riders suffering from concussion will be suspended for 21 days after their concussive event. British Eventing’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr Judith Johnson, said that the change to BE’s ruling aimed to increase riders’ understanding of concussion, and the importance to their future wellbeing in the condition’s ‘safe management’. “Many sporting bodies altered their rules in relation to concussion in the light of the Zurich Convention’s International Symposium on sports concussion, and the subsequent “Consensus statement on concussion in sport” [which was issued to sporting bodies in 2013],” Judith states. “BE encourages all riders, coaches and officials to read and observe BE’s guidelines on concussion. It is important to recognise the seriousness of concussion, not only in competition, but also when teaching or riding at home, and observe the recommendations,” she adds.

scientist at Sweden’s Gothenburg University has showed that recovery from concussion is much slower than previously thought. Sanna Neselius, also a member of the medical commission of the Swedish Boxing Federation, showed that analysis of the cerebro-spinal fluid after concussion can be used to determine the extent of brain injury. Neselius’ doctoral thesis demonstrated that sports-related concussion heals much slower than previously known, with a heavy concussion, such as that experienced after being ‘knocked out’, potentially taking more than four months to heal. Concussion is one of the most common sports-related injuries, and increasing numbers of athletes and riders experience it every year. “[Medical] assessment today is often based on physical symptoms, neuropsychological tests, and the neurological examination of the athlete. However our studies show that these tests are not sensitive enough, nor can we rely on the athlete’s self-reported lack of symptoms. Concussion symptoms usually pass after a few days, but the neurological damage may still be present,” Neselius said. She also found in her studies that the brains of children and adolescents are more sensitive, and require longer time to heal.

Recovery can be lengthy

In the past it was thought that concussion could be graded, but the latest research shows this not to be the case. A rider with slight confusion after a minor fall may have symptoms which persist for several days or even weeks, whereas a rider who is knocked out may recover fully after a few days! Recurrent concussion is cumulative. If it occurs before full recovery from a previous incident, it may even cause permanent brain damage. Concussion and loss of consciousness should not be confused, however; concussion can result from injuries other than to the head, with no loss of consciousness involved; it may, for instance, result from a jolt to the spine when falling off a horse. BE has also recognised the condition of ‘delayed concussion’. The amended rules state that a rider with suspected concussion should be re-examined two hours after the incident, and that failure to present to the event doctor for re-examination of a suspected concussion will automatically result in 21 day suspension until clarification of the diagnosis can be made.

Reducing the velocity of a fall

The RS-tor rider safety aid is an invaluable tool to (a) help prevent a horse fall completely, or (b) reduce the velocity that the rider’s body experiences if a fall takes place, because the product has allowed a ‘safer’ fall. The RS-tor is attached safety to the saddle bars beneath the leathers, and an elasticised element attached to comfortable end-strap that the rider holds cleverly reduces the velocity of a fall. Should the rider be badly unseated and unable to ‘save’ themselves from falling, the RS-tor strap will absorb some of their movement as they leave the saddle, sometimes even allowing the rider to land on their feet. It is not allowed in affiliated BE competition, but CAN used in unaffiliated cross country events, and is highly recommended for all jumping and cross country training. What to feed when it’s

hot, hot, hot! Q

I have a 16.2hh KWPN gelding working at Advanced Medium presently in full work. He is quite a hot horse in that he does not need energy feeds but does lose weight when travelling and going to competitions. He has lost a bit of top line recently and even though his body weight is sufficient I would like him to have more in reserve as he is about to have quite a busy month of travelling.

As he is quite a hot horse ideally all of his energy should be sourced through oils and fibres which will provide a source of slow release energy for stamina, keeping clear of starch from cereals. You could top his diet up with additional oils, however high oil manufactured feeds and supplements often contain additional nutrients, specifically antioxidants, that will help improve oil utilisation. Look for feeds with a high fibre and high oil content and try to keep the combined level of starch and sugar (NSC) below 10%. What is the difference between Speedi-Beet and Fibre-Beet?

hirteen-year-old Mollly Baseley had a surprise yet exciting win at the South East Dressage Championships when she and her pony Catmint took the Novice 23 Championship. Molly has had Catmint also known as Frodo for 22 months. Her mother Tina Baseley said: “It has been quite a long haul changing Frodo from a cross country pony to a dressage pony, but Molly is at last getting some good results. She has been really encouraged by joining BYRDS and particularly from all the friends she has made at BD Southern, as well as the support she receives from Sue Pinks and Sharon Walker.” Molly trains with Leanne Wall and also receives help and encouragement from Gail Lorence, who is based at the same yard as Molly at Chart Farm in Heaverham. Molly is a member of the West Kent Sevenoaks Pony Molly Bseley Club and hopes to be representing them at and Catmint, the Area Dressage competition this summer. Novice 23 Tina continued: “Molly was second to go Champions in the class and we put Frodo back on the lorry and un-plaited him. We thought it was a nice test, but didn’t think she would get placed. We were delighted to see her score of 73.20% when we returned to check out the score board. We then had nail-biting three hours to wait for the rest of the class to do their tests, but Molly held the lead. She was definitely the only child in the line-up and I didn’t see many other ponies in her section, so I just thought it was quite nice the children taking on the adults. We had to rush back to the lorry and re-plait Frodo for the presentation. They won a fantastic rug, which was a bit big and at times Frodo looked like he might trip over in the presentation!”

Bryony Lovegrove and Celton Ajax, Novice Dressage Champions

Fellow BYRDS Southern member, Bryony Lovegrove and her pony Celton Ajax, known as Jack, also headed a Novice Championship at Hickstead. Originally destined for the show ring the now 13-year-old by Rotherwood Goldfinger didn’t settle in the ring with other ponies. Now 16, Bryony has owned Jack for the last six years and when their show ring career failed she decided to try dressage, which proved much more successful and the combination has been part of the BYRDS Inter-Regional Team for the last three years as well as competing at the Sheepgate Under 25 Championships, Hartpury Winter Championships and Petplan Championships. They are trained by Sharon Edwards and Darryl Thickett and are currently working at Elementary level and Bryony hopes to ride in Elementary tests at Sheepgate this year.
