2017 may have sped by, but reflecting on the year, it has been punctuated by many wonderful shows, events and simply the opportunity to chat to ‘local riders’ about their horses. Along with the wonderful show reports we have included this month, there are 12 pages of Regional Roundup featuring so many of your fantastic achievements, from taking part in a sponsored ride to winning a national championship. These pages are what Localrider Magazine is all about, pure and simply, enjoying life with your horses. It’s now December and we can officially mention Christmas. If you are still struggling to find that perfect gift turn to page 14 for our Christmas Gift Guide. Santa may not be able to fit a new horsebox down the chimney, but I still might add it to my wish list. There are a lot more modest and certainly smaller items featured too. If after all that Christmas shopping you feel like you deserve a treat, then make sure you enter the Christmas Giveaways on page 44. We have a wonderful mix of prizes this year – for you, your horse and even your dog. As I sign off from 2017, there are just a few things to tell you about. In the February issue we will be featuring readers’ veterans, so if you own an older horse or pony drop me a line with a picture and why you think your horse deserves to be featured. Also, the new website will be launching soon, so keep an eye on www.localrider.co.uk If you sign up to our newsletter we will let you know when it goes live and also keep you advised of any competitions and giveaways we are running. Lots of you will be setting new riding goals for 2018, good luck with those and as the season progresses remember to let me know how you get on. We love hearing your stories. Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

his coming New Year’s Day, head to the capital for a fun day out, as ‘All The Queen’s Horses’ take to London’s streets in The London New Year’s Day Parade 2018. Amongst the jugglers, cheerleaders, acrobats, and marching bands participating in this annual parade on 1st January 2018, a team of 60 horses will be taking to the streets of London dressed to thrill under the show’s theme of ‘Circus & The Showman’. Each year the parade celebrates a particular theme. Last year’s parade celebrating famous film, TV and theatre productions and the forthcoming parade promises to offer plenty of star quality, featuring side-saddle riders, horse and carriages and Iberian horses, with combinations dressed as medieval jesters, clowns and mime artists. Invited for selection from all over the UK, participants range in age from just five-years-old through to equestrians in their late seventies, and all are unpaid volunteers unified in their passion for horses and bringing equestrianism to the capital. New to the parade this year will be The Dales Pony Society with their interpretation of ‘Clowns’ showcased on their eleven stunning ponies. The equestrian element of the parade starts at 11.45am from Piccadilly Circus and finishes at Parliament, with the return route back via the Horse Guards, The Mall and Buckingham Palace. The event is free to watch, with plenty to see and keep everyone entertained. What better way to spend New Year’s Day!

New Equine team takes the reins at Plumpton College

T

he team at Plumpton College’s Equine Department, under the leadership of the new Head of Equine, Debra Richmond, now has the most highly qualified instructors of all agricultural colleges in the South East. One of these is Debbie Melville, one of the only UK Coaching Certificate (UKCC) Level 4 coaches in the UK. Mentor for the British Horse Society, British Eventing and the Pony Club, Debbie’s experience stretches across all ages of rider and across all disciplines. With full-time and part-time degrees as well as other courses on offer, there’s something for everyone, with an emphasis on small group sizes and one-to-one support. Debra Richmond, Head of Equine, said: “We’re excited to welcome the next generation to Plumpton College’s Equine Department. Career prospects have never been so good, largely due to the fantastic links we have developed with employers and placement providers. In the past few years, we’ve seen graduates go on to a range of roles, from yard and events management to racing and polo yard management, working with horse charities and much more. Our outstanding facilities play a large part in our students’ success. These include two well-equipped yards, two indoor schools, an outdoor school, a horse walker, a mechanical horse, a treadmill – not forgetting our superb range of horses from youngsters to ex-competition horses and shire horses.” Plumpton College also runs a number of shorter equine courses including introductory courses for 14-16 year olds, a BTEC Level 3 diploma in Equine Management and a one-day course in Equine First Aid.

Winter fitness for ponies With darker evenings and shorter days many parents turn to lungeing to keep their child’s pony ‘ticking over’ between weekends, so that their child can continue to hunt or compete. Ten minutes going round on each rein will burn a few calories, but do little in terms of correct, physical work. It pays dividends to be more constructive and, in that same twenty minutes, give your pony a workout that makes him use his back, promotes engagement and wither-lift and develops balance and swing. To do this you need to use and aid such as the EquiAmi lunge aid that will simply and effectively bring improvements over the winter months. Once warmed-up on both reins, ponies generally enjoy some polework, spiralling and other exercises which increase hind limb activity and lighten the forehand. Including lots of transitions and changes of rein make the pony more attentive, responsive and supple whilst developing a lovey topline and balance. Dr Hilary Bentley of EquiAmi says that people are really surprised just how well their ponies work and how quickly great results are seen in this great aid that saves time, saves effort and makes life easier. Simple lunge exercises in EquiAmi also make the pony much lighter and better balanced for the child to ride which is an added bonus. Endorsed by top riders, trainers, vets and therapists. www.equiami.com

ometimes I think Del Boy had it right …… cash Rodders, cash. Indeed, horse trading – and a lot of horse activities generally – are one of the few places left in society where cash transactions are still pretty common. Now, I like cash as much as the next person – as it fleetingly passes out of the cash machine, into my purse and from there on to pay for hay, feed, bedding and lessons, etc. However, unsurprisingly, the tax man has a significant distrust of cash transactions. Not so many years ago, transactions were undertaken in cash, credit cards were for special occasions and social media didn’t exist. Living off the grid really wasn’t all that hard. These days, we buy most things on our credit /debit cards and any detail of our lives that we haven’t already freely posted onto Facebook can anyway be found through a look at our computer browsing history. And the taxman knows it. So, next time you sell some tack on-line, or you advertise a horse for sale – or even if you buy an expensive item on-line, you need to assume that the taxman knows about it. If you’re a seller, well then should you declare the income? If you’re a buyer, well then how did you manage to buy a £15k horse if you only declared to the taxman that you earn £15k a year? With this in mind, I’ve set out below the key income tax issues likely to be of interest to the equestrian community:

Are You Selling Privately or as a Business? This is the first big question. If you’re selling a horse or other item privately then the sale won’t be treated as business income for you and as such there’s no income tax considerations. If you sell as a business, then the income will count towards your taxable profit. So where do you draw the line between a private sale and a business sale, for tax purposes? This is a question that comes up a

Things are changing in the digital world and HMRC are able to track individual’s buying and selling habits through the internet and social media, meaning there is nowhere to hide if you are dealing in cash over the legitimate threshold and not declaring it. In this article Janet Pierce of Charter Tax explains why a good accountant will be able to help you do things properly while also making sure the rules are used to your best advantage to keep taxable profits down.

lot and the answer can be found by analysing what HMRC call the “Badges of Trade”. Basically, the “Badges of Trade” are a list of characteristics that can be said to indicate whether or not someone is regarded as trading for tax purposes. The more characteristics on the list that point towards trading rather than a private activity then the more chance that the taxman will regard the activity as a taxable trade. These Badges of Trade can be briefly summarised as follows: 1 Profit Seeking Motive? – Did you buy the horse with a view to then selling it at a profit? 2 Number of Transactions – Was this a one-off or do you regularly buy and sell horses? 3 Nature of the Asset – Are we talking about a horse that you took on virtually as a rescue case or did you deliberately buy a horse you thought you’d easily sell again? 4 Existence of Similar Trading Transactions or Interests – Are you in the horse industry? If you regularly give riding lessons and have a reputation for being able to improve a horse, it will be more likely that the taxman will think that a horse you bought and then sold was sold as part of a trade rather than as a private sale. 5 Changes to the Asset – so is this a horse that you deliberately trained up to sell? Did you buy a horse, put a good competition record on it for a season and now you’re selling for a profit? 6 The Way the Sale was Carried Out – so did you deliberately advertise the horse for sale? Or was it really a coincidence that someone saw it at a show and made you an offer you couldn’t refuse? 7 The Source of Finance – If you deliberately took out debt to buy a horse which you then sell, HMRC will often try to argue that this looks more as though you deliberately set out to sell at a profit.

26/11/17 20:00:50

8 Interval of Time Between Purchase and Sale – was this a horse that you had for a long time and outgrew? Or did you buy and sell for a quick turnaround / profit? 9 Method of Acquisition – Was this a much loved family horse that your parents bought for you? Or did you deliberately go out and buy a horse to sell on? Remember, by the way, that if you have a business then as well as registering for (and paying) income tax, you’ll need to pay National Insurance. Fortunately, the threshold above which you’d need to register for VAT is a lot higher (£85,000 of turnover) – I’ll talk about VAT in my next article.

But Did You Make Any Profit Anyway? Some people will tell you there’s a particular cut-off, such as being able to sell two or three horses a year and that’s not a business, but more than that and it is. The reality is that the taxman doesn’t have such a cut-off. However, an honest analysis of the above questions will normally point you in the right direction for whether or not you are really trading / in business for tax purposes. But of course, knowing whether or not you’re trading / in business for tax purposes is only the first question. The next question is whether or not you actually made any money doing so! Let’s face it, unless you are Carl Hester or Michael Whitaker and able to train and sell horses at a handsome price, it’s otherwise pretty tricky to make serious money out of horses. If you’re doing it the hard way, trying to buy, bring on and sell horses to finance your riding career, while yes you may sell some horses for a decent price, how much has that horse cost you in the meantime in terms of keep, entry fees and vets fees, etc? Or if you breed, then while again you may sell some foals at a good price, what about the cost of keeping the broodmare, the vets fees to get her in foal, any extra vets fees should the foaling be difficult, etc? And if you thought that livery yards always do very well (after all, livery is expensive, isn’t it?), think again – by the time the yard itself is paid for, margins are pretty tight. So, if you do a proper job of adding up all of the costs, then if truth be told there may not be much left on which to pay tax anyway. Indeed, often it will be in the taxman’s interests to argue that a horse “business” isn’t a business at all, it is a hobby, so that the taxman can say that the losses from the business are not deductible against profits from other (non-horse related) activities. For example, you’ve done well with a City job and you decide that you want to take a chance while you still can and use your City money to buy a livery / competition yard and run your own horsey business, go out and get competing yourself, so that you can get a chance at Badminton while you still can. But you know how much these things cost so you kept a hand in doing some City Consultancy work in addition to having the livery / competition yard. Losses from the livery / competition yard could then be offset against profits from the City Consultancy work, so at least there’s less tax to pay on the City Consultancy work. The taxman, though, may not like that idea and could try to argue that the running of the yard is a hobby rather than a business and so the losses cannot be used to offset the City Consultancy income. A good accountant will, though, have a good argument with the taxman about this on your behalf, because if the business is properly run then just because there are losses doesn’t necessarily mean the taxman gets to say that it’s a hobby!

Exemption For Income Under £1,000 Technically speaking, if you provide a service and get paid for it, most likely that’s income for you. So, if you work on a Saturday morning at a local yard or you do a few teaching hours, you’ll end up with income. Likewise, if you have a day job elsewhere but do a bit of buying and selling on the side (e.g. of tack, horse equipment, etc) then again you could end up with income to declare. However, in recognition of the fact that basically a lot of people are in the situation of doing a “little bit on the side” a new exemption was brought in whereby for trading income under £1,000 you can legitimately not declare this on your tax return. The £1,000 limit is for the gross income (i.e. without taking expenses into account) so not much good if you’re selling horses, but just for getting paid for doing a few bits here and there it’s useful. The £1,000 trading income allowance is of course in addition to the “personal allowance” of (currently) £11,500 under which you don’t need to pay any tax or national insurance.

What The Future Holds? As every year passes, it seems the tax rules get tougher, the penalties for non-compliance go up and the information available to the taxman about your activities gets bigger and bigger. Indeed, there are plans afoot for taxpayers to have their own personal portal with HMRC that will be pre-populated with your data, that HMRC collect from banks, your employers, etc. Couple that with bank notes being upgraded so that old bank notes cease to be legal tender and that wad of cash you had in the draw, undeclared to the tax man, starts to become less easy to use. HMRC do have in place various disclosure schemes for you to fess up to your undeclared earnings but there are of course complications to going through these and suitable advice will be needed. It all sounds a lot to deal with, but a good accountant will be able to help you do things properly while also making sure the rules are used to your best advantage to keep taxable profits down, use any losses and use the relevant exemptions as far as possible. If you have found this article of interest and would like to find out more about tax planning, then contact Janet Pierce at Charter Tax.

Discovering W Millie’s true potential

hen Jessica Millie the day Groves spotted she arrived in Millie on the January 2016 “Project Horses and Ponies” Facebook page, she felt there was something about her. Jessica said: “After some deliberation I called the owner who explained that Millie was for sale as she no longer had the time to care for her. A week later I decided to make the four-and-a-half-hour trip to Essex to visit Millie. She was half the pony I had expected to meet, with all her bones showing and a three-inch long winter coat. She trotted up lame and was lunged in bailing twine. Despite this I could see she had a really active hind leg and although being held in bailing twine she was trying to seek a contact, she had something about her. Having had her at home for a week and through the Welsh Cob Society I came across the page “Taffechan Cobs”. Millie’s registered name is Taffechan Rhea Dargon. Here I found a post from a few weeks prior asking if anyone had seen or heard of Taffechan Rhea Dargon. My thoughts jumped to me having bought a stolen pony. Luckily, I hadn’t and it transpired that she had had four owners within the eight months prior to me buying her. Millie had been through quite a lot in her short life, including an accident at some point which off-set her shoulder by an inch and left myofascial tension in the neck and particularly the face, a black incisor tooth, plus a torn muscle near her hip where there is now an indentation of scar tissue. A year of rehabilitation work, and a gentle backing process has now revealed that she is a talented pony who has shown immense potential. I have competed her in hand locally where she won the Best Solid Colour class. She has also successfully competed at dressage, which is where my passion truly lies, gaining 68% and 72% at Intro Level. She has come a long way in a year.” Jessica has previously worked with horses professionally. Working in Germany at the Hanoverian Verden Auctions, at the Hanoverian State stud in Celle and also with one of Germany’s top trainers Holga Finken, training to Grand Prix. When she returned to the UK, she had a break from horses, working as a Personal Trainer, focusing on riders, and trained riders from grass roots to World Class Potential Squad. Jessica’s decision to buy Millie and the dedication she has given to Millie’s rehabilitation was richly rewarded this autumn when the combination finished seventh with 65% in the Sunshine Tour Intro Dressage Championships at Hickstead. Jessica said; “I was over the moon just to be there, but to then when we were placed in the top ten, I burst into tears. There was a lot of crying and hugging that day.”

REGIONAL ROUNDUP

Family success at the Sunshine Tour

T

racy Reddin contacted us after she, her niece and cousin all had a successful time at the Sunshine Tour Championships, held at Hickstead in September, remarkably all finishing in the top three in the 90cm Show Jumping Championship. Tracy’s niece, Lacey Reddin, and Jerezano won the 90cm Show Jumping Championship and the Supreme Championship, her cousin, Sammy O’Brien and Xanadu won the 80cm Show Jumping Championship and was Reserve to Lacey in the 90cm, with Tracy finishing in third with Enrique in the 90cm Championship. Tracy, Lacey and Sammy keep their horses together on a small yard in Epping, Essex. They have produced their horses themselves and are no strangers to success having brought home Championship titles from Trailblazers in both 2016 and 2017.

Sammy O’Brien, Lacey Reddin and Tracy Reddin finished in the top three at the Sunshine Tour Championships Vivien Pearson and Oblio, winners of the London & South East Riding Clubs Elementary Dressage to Music Championship

Oblio makes a full recovery Vivien Pearson’s 14-year-old Oblio put box rest behind him to win the London & South East Riding Clubs Elementary Dressage to Music Championship, in addition to finishing second in the Novice with points section at Sands Farm at the beginning of October. Members of Chipstead Riding Club, the combination had competed at the British Riding Club’s TopSpec National Dressage to Music Championships the previous weekend, where they finished eleventh in the Elementary and fifth in the Novice final. The results were all the more special for Vivien who has nursed Oblio back to competitive health. In February 2016 Oblio went lame, scans showed him to have damaged the suspensory ligaments in both of his front legs. Vivien said: “With far from perfect conformation and a persistent desire to jump field fences, I never thought I would be able to compete him again.” He spent most of 2016 recovering before their first dressage to music competition in July this year, where they won the novice section at Bury Farm. At the Riding Club qualifiers at Plumpton College he won both the Novice with points section and the Elementary, qualifying for the BRC TopSpec National Championships and the London and South East Championships. Vivien continued: “I worked with Amanda Birch Dressage Music to put together the music. We used The piano Guys Batman Evolution for the Elementary and a combination of Stranger on a Shore by Aker Bilk, Swinging Safari by Billy Vaughn and Swinging Gently by Earl Grant for the novice. Tania Grantham from Inspire Dressage helped put the floor plans together. Oblio loves going out and competing, he used to get so cross seeing the lorry go out when he was recuperating, so I am planning to do some more BD dressage to music classes. I just need to be careful not to push him too hard.”

Blood Transfusions Dr. C. Baldwin, BVetMed, MRCVSof Sussex Arundel Hospital explains about blood transfusions in horses, why they are so much more complicated than human transfusions and how there is a one in a half a million chance of an exact match…

B

lood and plasma are vital fluid therapies for horses and foals. Unfortunately, there are no blood banks for horses (as there are for humans and some small animals) because horse red blood cells do not store well. Blood can only be drawn from a donor horse when a transfusion is needed. In general blood transfusions are used to supply either plasma or whole blood. This article will discuss both and will also outline the ideal characteristics of a horse blood donor. Before this is discussed it is important to understand how blood is divided. Blood can be broadly divided into two parts; plasma and red blood cells. The plasma contains the white blood cells and antibodies effective in fighting infections. The plasma also contains large proteins and clotting factors that help the blood clot when bleeding occurs. The red blood cells deliver oxygen to the rest of the body.

Eight different blood types

When blood is taken from one horse and given to another there is a possibility that the white blood cells and antibodies will attack the recipients blood or the white blood cells, and antibodies in the recipient can attack the red blood cells from the donor. To minimise this risk matching blood donors and recipients by blood type can be done. Humans have four major blood types and can be either negative or positive based on the rhesus factor, but horses have eight blood types and can be positive or negative on over 30 different factors. This makes getting a 100% match, a one in half a million chance. However, there are only two real problem blood types to be concerned about, Qa and Aa. So, we can cross match the donor and recipient by mixing the two bloods together and looking for a reaction before administering the blood. This being said, a blood transfusion between two horses that have never received blood transfusions previously is unlikely to result in a reaction. An ideal blood donor will be a large (>500kg) young, healthy horse. The horse cannot have or have had a blood disease (such as equine infectious anaemia) and cannot have had a blood transfusion previously, this is because if a horse has had a blood transfusion then its immune system has produced antibodies ready to fight against other blood types, these horses won’t match. Females and especially females that have had a foal, are also more likely to carry antibodies against different blood types, that may attack the recipient of the blood.

Blood donating

If your horse is donating blood, then the procedure is relatively innocuous. A catheter is placed in the horse’s jugular and 4-8L of blood is collected and mixed in a prepared sterile bag. The bag contains an anti-clotting preparation and stores the blood before its use. The donating horse may or may not need to be sedated and will make a full recovery after a couple of days’ rest. Horses can donate 20-25% of their blood volume at two to four weekly intervals, however, we do try not to take this amount on a regular basis. Blood once it is collected, can either be given as whole blood, which is usually given to horses that have lost blood through haemorrhage, or as plasma only (blood without the red blood cells). All blood products are best used fresh, but plasma can be frozen and stored for a longer period of time. Plasma also has fewer risk factors compared to whole blood, so is generally safer to administer and doesn’t require blood typing donor horses. Plasma may be administered to horses that are suffering from colic, colitis and numerous other conditions. Because equine blood can’t be stored it is often a case of getting the blood as and when you need it. For this reason, if your horse is a blood donor you may not be required to donate for weeks or even months, but when your horse does donate, it will allow you to participate in a lifesaving treatment protocol.

FEATURE Dressage horses experience high levels of downward force.

A study showed overall force was reduced in up to 61.1% of subjects, when gel pads were used.

Do you train in sitting trot? Here’s why gel saddle pads may help... Words by Stephen Biddlecombe

I invented the original range of Gel-Eze undersaddle pads, and as our range has been developed, we have also been able to add saddle pads that include strategically-placed cushions of gel, slim and unobtrusive, to aid comfort. For example, I believe that a good quality The Stephens gel eze sheepskin half numnah incorporating pad with comfort cushions can help gel pads positioned in protect the horse from forces applied strategic places at the as the rider sits down in the saddle shoulder area, e.g. either side of the horse’s spine and under the point of the saddle tree, can help protect the horse from the effects of saddle rotation, and also the force applied as the rider sits down in the saddle. Science does back up my beliefs; in an article published in the Equine Veterinary Journal, an Austrian team carried out a study into wide-fit saddles (Ref 4), and investigated the forces and pressure distribution achieved from different saddle pads; they found that maximum overall force was reduced in up to 61.1% of subjects when gel pads were used. So, invest in a good quality gel-pad if you want to safe-guard your horse’s back health, and reduce the force applied to your horse’s back. Stephen represents Equine Management Ltd.

T

he industry has innovated some fine products that aid equine health and wellness. Although there’s scant new published data available on types of saddle pads, there’s been lots of information published in scientific journals within the last seven years that supports the use of gel saddle pads to absorb shock.

In dressage, the front part of the saddle rotated in the opposite direction to the rider’s pelvis For example, a Swedish study, published in the Equine Veterinary Journal (Ref 1), assessed saddle and rider movements during collected walk in a group of high-level dressage horses and riders, finding that the front part of the saddle rotated in the opposite direction to the rider’s pelvis, and that the rider’s influence on the horse’s movement pattern is strongest at walk. The common perception of elite sports horses has been that the fast, jumping disciplines may exert the greatest levels of pressure to the horse’s back, but current research tells us that dressage horses also experience high levels of pressure. An Austrian study in The Veterinary Journal (Ref 2), examined the forces that act on the horse’s back in different rider positions in trot, by using an electronic pressure mat beneath a saddle. While the two point seat - the jumping position - gave the highest levels of rider stability and the lowest load on the horse’s back, sitting trot put the most levels of pressure on the horse’s back. A similar Dutch study published in the Journal of Biomechanics (Ref 3) examined ‘reaction force’ between the rider and the horse’s back in trot, finding that sitting trot exerted more force onto the horse’s back than rising trot.

Dressage horses may experience higher levels of ‘force’ than jumpers Studies like these help us to understand how certain horses – high level dressage horses, for example – may experience higher levels of force on their backs than their jumping counterparts, particularly if they undergo long-term schooling in sitting trot. Equisafety Hatband

THREE TO BE GIVEN AWAY!

Rule 51 of the Highway Code advises horse riders to wear a light showing white to the front and red to the rear. With this in mind Equisafety’s range now includes items that feature strips of LED lights which strobe across the product offering the driver the opportunity to access another viewpoint in his peripheral vision. These products contain white or red lights depending on where they are worn. White lights are always worn when moving towards oncoming traffic and red lights are worn at the rear to signal to drivers that there is a vehicle in front. Why red? Well first we associate it with a warning and secondly red has the lowest impact on your vision at night, i.e. your eyes recover their night vision faster when they’re exposed to red light. Therefore, the Hatband features white lights on the front and red on the back; the breastplate has white lights and the tailguard has red lights. Equisafety are offering three readers the chance to win one of their brand new USB chargeable hatbands with LED Lights.

FEED NEWS Winter is finally here and with it comes the challenge to ensure your horse or pony’s diet has the correct amount of nutrition to support them during the cold months ahead. Julie Priestley, Equine Brand Manager at Dodson & Horrell, explains why your horse’s nutritional needs change over the winter and the benefits of different types of feed.

W

hether stabled or out 24/7, all horses and ponies need a carefully planned winter feeding routine to help support them through winter. This support can help them maintain a healthy digestive function, and overall health, and in some cases to help maintain a healthy bodyweight. As exercise routines can slow down, with less daylight hours and bad weather together with limited grazing on poor quality forage; creating a nutritional plan to suit change of season and routine doesn’t have to feel like a minefield.

The Science

Dodson & Horrell Nutritionist Charlotte Wilkinson BSc (Hons), ANutr explains the science: Horses are hindgut fermenters; they rely heavily on the microbial population in their hindgut for efficient digestion and utilisation of nutrients, predominantly for the fibre portion of their diet through the process of fermentation. The Fibre portion of the horse’s diet is arguably the most important and is critical in maintaining healthy gut function. Without it the risks of conditions such as colic, gastric ulcers as well as behavioural issues can increase. Fibre has the important property of ‘diluting’ more readily fermentable material, such as starches and sugars. This dilution effect can supress a rapid decrease in pH of the hindgut, which if occurred, would create an unfavourable environment for the microbes that inhabit there. Long and short chop fibre is also crucial in encouraging contractions of the gastrointestinal tract to support healthy and normal function. The delicate balance of beneficial and potentially harmful microbes present within the hindgut can be easily affected by diet, and quick changes in nutrition can make a large difference, including changes in hay or grass supply. It can also be disrupted

Planning for Winter

by long periods without forage intake, undigested starch entering the hind-gut and by stressful situations such as illness, travelling or periods of very hard work.

The importance of fibre

Include a beneficial soluble fibre in their feed plan such as the Dodson & Horrell Kwikbeet. It is an ideal quality feed that importantly can help to encourage fluid intake over winter. Water is often a forgotten nutrient, but is crucial in maintaining healthy digestive function as well as other bodily functions. The addition of Kwikbeet into your horse’s diet can also help provide additional succulent fibre and calories in their feed, whilst remaining low in sugar and starch.

Weight loss over winter

Some horses struggle to maintain a healthy body weight over winter, but by adjusting their diet in line with their current body condition and workload can help to prevent this. Increasing your horse’s dietary energy and calorie intake can help to maintain weight over winter. Keeping an eye on body condition, and using a weight tape regularly can also help to notice early stages of weight loss that may not be so obvious when your horse is rugged up more often.

Trickle feed if adding to the quantity Don’t however, over feed your horse -

remember the size of the horse’s stomach is only roughly the size of a rugby ball. With higher quantities of feed required to help with weight maintenance, the size of your horse’s bowl will often become much larger. Where possible, it is best to split your horse’s hard feed into as many small meals as possible, ideally three to four. For horses that require a high calorie ration that is lower in sugar and starch, a complete feed such as Dodson & Horrell Cushcare Condition or Build Up Conditioning Mix or Cubes may be suitable. Cushcare Condition provides conditioning calories to help support weight gain, as well as containing herbal support; all in an easily manageable soft and crumbly pellet that can be fed dry or made into a mash. Oil is also an idea solution to adding concentrated calories, selecting a high oil chaff such as Alfalfa Oil Plus, or adding a high oil supplement such as the Dodson & Horrell Build & Glow can all help to up the calories in your horse’s diet without adding bulk.

Wintering good doers

For horses that maintain their body condition well over winter or for those where winter is a time for a weight loss regime, it is still important that they receive a fully balanced feed; especially as quality of grass and preserved forages can be poorer. Dodson & Horrell Ultimate Balancer is a low intake, high specification feed balancer that is suitable for all horses and ponies. It includes QLC antioxidant package for immune support, as well as Actisaf yeast for additional digestive support and contains good levels of biotin, with zinc and methionine for supporting good hoof health. Supplementation may be beneficial over the cooler months; Echinacea can help with additional support for the immune system, as well as products that contain the QLC antioxidant package.

As the temperature drops and the grass stops growing, it is important to remember how many extra calories your horse uses keeping warm. Keep an eye on his condition and if you need any further advice, remember all the large feed companies have very good telephone helplines. Here we share some of the products which may be of interest to you this winter…

Mollichaff Condition Complete

Mollichaff Condition Complete is a highly digestible, high fibre, high oil and low starch blend in a single bag. It can be fed as a complete concentrate feed alongside good quality forage, when fed at the recommended levels, and contains a broad spectrum vitamin and mineral supplement. This makes life easier for you as you don’t need to shop for anything else to feed other than good quality forage, because it contains all the dietary requirements your horse or pony needs. It is made from a balanced blend of alfalfa, dried grass, oat straw, fibre pellets, barley, soya flakes, soya oil and mint, plus Yea-sacc® - a natural live yeast culture - and a prebiotic to help maintain a healthy digestive system. Essential fatty acids are provided by the soya oil to help maintain healthy skin and encourage a glossy coat. Mollichaff Condition Complete is suitable for encouraging weight gain in underweight horses and ponies and can also help to maintain weight and condition in competition horses and ponies. Because it is a fibre-based feed, it provides a more natural way of feeding your horse or pony compared to a high cereal diet. The addition of mint makes Mollichaff Condition Complete particularly appealing to horses because of its taste and aroma.

Dodson & Horrell Ultimate Balancer

Dodson & Horrell Ultimate Balancer provides a concentrated source of vitamins and minerals with additional health support supplements for all horses and ponies. It includes, Digestive Support with FOS & Yeast, Hoof Support with Biotin, Chelated Zinc & Methionine, and Recovery and Immune Support with QLC Antioxidants, MSM & Vitamin. Incorporating the latest nutritional advances into equine feeding, including research into antioxidants and vitamin and mineral levels in pasture, Ultimate Balancer ensures your horse or pony has all the nutrients they need. Ideal for topping-up natural vitamin levels in forage and for producing essential amino acids for overall health and muscle development. www.dodsonandhorrell.com

Dodson & Horrell Fibre Fusion Dodson & Horrell Fibre Fusion is a unique blend of sainfoin, alfalfa and grass chaff for added palatability. It includes Fibre Plus Complex to support the digestive function and fermentation of fibre. Natural antioxidants support performance and recovery. From January 2018 Dodson & Horrell are offering a free bag of Fibre Fusion with every bag of Ultimate Balancer. A perfect ‘clean sport’ combination to fuel your horse to perform throughout the coming season. Combining Ultimate Balancer with Fibre Fusion provides key amino acids to support muscle development and repair. It includes electrolytes to help replace losses that occur as part of regular training and is a fully balanced feed including chelated minerals for optimum absorption and activity in the body. This combination is an easy to feed performance focused solution that includes alfalfa and grass chaff. All these winning ingredients provide your horse with all the minerals, vitamins and energy needed to perform seriously. www.dodsonandhorrell.com

TopSpec Senior Feed Balancer

Containing 50% vegetable oil alongside the necessary nutrients, specifically antioxidants, Vitamin E and C along with Selenium and Zinc, Sumo Original is the ideal high oil supplement to use to help promote excellent overall condition. Providing super high levels of oils and fatty acids alongside the necessary nutrients ensures excellent overall condition, helping encourage weight gain and an improvement in topline. As Sumo Original is virtually free from starch and sugars it can be fed safely to laminitic horses and ponies and is ideal to use on those that tend to get over excitable when fed traditional cereals, providing an excellent source of slow release energy. Calorie dense, it is ideal for horses with a limited appetite designed to be fed at a rate of 0.5gm per 1kg bodyweight, with a 500kg horses requiring just 250gm per day.

Keep your veteran in tip top condition with TopSpec Senior Feed Balancer. TopSpec Senior Feed Balancer is a very palatable ‘nonheating’ feed that contains several supplements including the levels of micronutrients and digestive aids normally only found in high quality specialised supplements. Of particular importance to elderly horses is the inclusion of micronutrients known to help maintain mobility. The scientifically recommended rate of 10grams of glucosamine/500kg horse/day is a key feature of the mobility supplement included in this formula. This superb specification allows elderly horses to utilise far more nutrients from the forage and straights in their diet, which often means that their hard feed intake can be reduced with many resulting benefits. Using TopSpec Senior Feed Balancer will help to maintain mobility and also promote muscle development and topline, which often starts to decline as horses’ age. Feeding it will help to maintain good hoof quality and promote a supple skin with a shiny coat. TopSpec Senior Feed Balancer helps to maintain a healthy immune system and also includes a highly available source of vitamin C to help maintain healthy lung tissue.

It is designed to optimise every horse’s diet from family pony to performance athlete. www.naf-equine.eu/uk

Baileys Ease & Excel

If your horse gets stressed about more time in the stable, over winter, he may be more prone to gastric upsets and loss of condition. Baileys Ease & Excel is the perfect option for providing slow release calories, from fibre and oil, while being low in starch and BETA-accredited as suitable for horses prone to gastric ulcers. It also contains a bespoke Protexin In-Feed Formula, of pre and probiotics plus other key ingredients, to support the health of the gut throughout its length. www.easeandexcel.co.uk

supplements Equine Answers Premier Flex HA Premier Flex HA contains high levels of Glucosamine HCL, Chondroitin Sulphate, MSM, Hyaluronic Acid (HA) and Omega 3. The combination of ingredients in Premier Flex HA act in synergy to help lubricate the joint and by aiding the production of synovial Fluid (joint oil), as well as helping with cartilage composition. Premier Flex HA was recently independently tested in a study into the effects of equine joint supplements using Templo Motion Analysis. The results were conclusive that supplementing with Premier Flex HA helped increase stride length thereby proving its effectiveness. For more information on the trial go to the Equine Answers website. Premier Flex HA is only available from the manufacturer Equine Answers at their website www.equineanswers.co.uk

Equine Answers 365 Complete

365 Complete from Equine Answers combines all the vitamins and minerals your horse needs in one product. 365 Complete also includes pre and pro-biotics to help keep gut health at its optimum and helps in the absorption of the nutrients in the feed. Use 365 Complete as a daily supplement to help keep your horse in peak condition. Because 365 Complete includes chelated ingredients, minerals are up to five times more absorbable than conventional minerals. Horse grazing can be vary in quality and in mineral balance, so feeding 365 Complete can help to plug any gap in your horse’s nutritional needs. Buy direct from Equine Answers at www.equineanswers.co.uk

The Lifeforce Range from Alltech The digestive system works as the horse’s very own in-built central heating system, with fibre as its fuel, thanks to fibre-digesting bacteria in the hind gut. Without sufficient fibre a horse will soon lose condition as it has to draw on its reserves to keep warm. Supplementing the diet with yeast cultures can help by creating optimum conditions for the beneficial bacteria to flourish, thereby improving fibre digestion as well as nutrient absorption. The Lifeforce Range from Alltech has been tailored to meet the needs of horses at every stage of life, from the early developmental stages as a foal, through the demands of competition and well into retirement. www.lifeforcehorse.co.uk

Equine America Sandout

Sandout is a digestive aid for horses or ponies grazing on sandy pastures. Soil and pastures vary greatly throughout the country. If a horse grazes on a sandy pasture, small amounts of sand and dirt will inevitably be ingested which, over time, may build up in the gut. Sandout should be fed for one week each month to horses or ponies grazing on sandy pastures. A veterinary surgeon may also recommend Sandout in other situations, and will advise accordingly. www.equine-america.co.uk

Equine America Coff-Less Coff-Less supports the upper and lower respiratory system. Promoting clear lungs and breathing, Coff-Less Powder soothes the airways promoting clear healthy lungs, whilst providing support to the immune system. Coff-Less can be used in the short term to support respiratory health, which can then be maintained using Airways Xtra Strength Powder. However, Coff-Less may be used daily, long term, for those horses with weak respiration, laboured breathing or that have a sensitivity to dust and mould spores found in the air, hay and bedding. www.equine-america.co.uk

NAF Five Star Magic

NAF Five Star Magic is a magnesium calmer with a difference. It’s a five star formula that contains a unique combination of herbs and nutrients known to help relax muscle tissue and support concentration. Magnesium is an essential nutrient to a horse’s wellbeing, and among its many roles is the regulation of nervous tension. As magnesium also acts on muscle tension, a horse low in magnesium may appear ‘tight’ in his way of going and express excitability or a lack of confidence. Low magnesium may be caused by a grazing deficiency or simply a horse or pony’s individual metabolism. Magnesium levels can also be reduced by regular travel and competition. Magic is more than just magnesium; it also contains a blend of herbs chosen for their traditional use in supporting confidence and concentration. The unique blend of magnesium and herbal support of Magic enables the horse to tackle all that is asked of it, calmly and confidently. www.naf-equine.eu/uk

It’s usually at this time of year when the weather changes for the worse and the fields become waterlogged and boggy that we start to think about mud fever and protecting our horse’s most valuable assets – their feet. A bacterial skin infection affecting the lower limbs of horses, mud fever is most common in winter when wet and muddy ground conditions create the perfect environment for bacteria to thrive. Constant moisture from consistently wet weather, along with repetitive trauma to the hoof from mud, sand and grit, can compromise the integrity of the epidermis and leave it open to bacterial invasion. Characterised by red, painful sores that mainly affect the pastern and heel area of the foot, mud fever is a chronic complaint that can sometimes be difficult to treat. For this reason, prevention is often easier and more effective than cure. Below are VioVet’s ‘top tips’ on dealing with mud fever this winter: • Avoid wrapping the legs in bandages – It can be tempting to do this when the fields are particularly muddy and you have to turn your horse out, but doing so is counter-productive as wraps will quickly become sodden and effectively keep the skin wetter for longer. • Clip leg hair – For some reason, feathered breeds tend to be more severely affected. Clipping the hair can reduce risk, as the feathers trap moisture and collect mud, allowing the legs to remain damp. The shorter the hair is, the faster the legs will dry. • Thinly apply a barrier cream – Always ensure the feet are clean and dry before applying, and use a product such as udder cream, castor oil, petroleum jelly, or a treatment specifically designed for mud fever. • Refrain from over-bathing the legs – Unless they are completely caked in mud, wait for the feet and legs to dry before brushing it off. Treat any small abrasions with an antiseptic cream and remove moist scabs with an antiseptic wash and allow the sores to dry out. • Stable if necessary – If infection is present, it is vital that you keep the feet clean and dry at all costs, otherwise infection can spread up the leg. Sometimes stabling is the best and only option for severely affected horses. For more information about mud fever visit www.viovet.co.uk

Vicky and Lexi pictures at the Sunshine Tour

Lexi-Rose Day Six-year-old Lexi-Rose has a fantastic first year back in the saddle. Lexi, whose family run Oakridge Stables in Dorset, had a fall from her Shetland when she was three and refused to ride again until December 2016, when the gorgeous grey, Graphite, arrived. Lexi started by walking around the farm, gradually regaining her confidence and in April 2017 went to her first show. It wasn’t all plain sailing, as Lexi’s mother Vicky explains: “On the way to her first show there were tears and tantrums and we thought that was the end of her wanting to ride ever again. However, the judge commented at how beautifully she sat and trotted and she needed to go home and practise, so she did, competing locally. She rode her heart out all summer and loved going to shows, especially the Sunshine Tour.” Vicky continued: “Lexi and Graphite were Reserve Champions in the Lead Rein Turnout, for which she needs to take a lot of the credit, as she was up till 11pm cleaning her tack and packing the lorry. They were third in the Turnout Supreme Championship, eighth in the under 6 Lead Rein Pony and tenth in the Lead Rein Mountain and Moorland Pony class. The rosettes and prizes were incredible and her confidence since competing at the Sunshine Tour has blossomed. She now steals my horse, and has agreed to join Poole and District Pony Club. We are looking forward to visiting the Sunshine Tour in 2018 with her new Shetland, and the rest of the team from Oakridge stables. Lexi has already qualified Moortown Graphite for the NPS Championships in August 2018 and is looking forward to competing in lead rein classes at the county shows next year. She will also be campaigning her new Shetland, Sambas Scotch, in coloured classes

If you would like to feature as Reader of The Month, please contact Fiona on 01892 863062 or email: fiona@localrider.co.uk

Why Choose Premier Flex? Not all equine joint supplements are the same, in fact they differ enormously in the levels of the active ingredients contained in them. A top quality joint supplement should contain not only a good level of Glucosamine which is a relatively cheap ingredient but also high levels of Chondroitin, HA and MSM. Premier Flex is possibly the highest spec equine joint supplement today!

“I am not one usually to write about products, but as a HUGE sceptic before I tried it, I just had to drop you a line about 365 Complete. I cannot believe the difference in my 5yo in the short time I have been feeding him 365 Complete, his coat is gleaming, he's so relaxed and content and he is bristling with good health!!” Annie Holbeche
