Welcome

28

It has been all systems go for local riders since the beginning of the year, as can be seen from the fabulous pictures of the London New Year’s Day Parade. This theatrical extravaganza is now in its 31st year and it grows bigger and brighter with each new year. You can read all about the Parade and our cover star, ‘All The Queen’s Horses’ organiser, Caroline Marsh, on page 14. Looking to the season ahead, lots of readers have already been out cross-country schooling, with some of you sharing your pictures on our social media pages. This is a great way of keeping in touch and letting us know what you have been up to. We have a brilliant feature this month from Heidi Woodhead, all about ‘Introducing Your Horse to Water’, perfect for those with young or nervous horses. Turn to page 44 to read more. For those of you who are thinking about going out schooling, look out for our ‘Where to go Cross Country Schooling’ feature in the March issue of Localrider. It contains everything you need to know about the local courses, including number of jumps, type of terrain, opening times, as well as lots of other useful information. The March issue will also include our ‘Bumper Show Dates Guide’ to the year ahead, perfect for planning your competition season. Each year in February we feature your veteran horses and ponies. This year we have received more lovely pictures and stories than ever before, so we have split the feature and will include more next month. I have been moved by the wonderful stories we have received. There is a vast range of horses and ponies, both in age, 16 to 38, as well as in the different jobs each one of them has done. Some have been confidence givers and schoolmasters, whereas others have performed at the top of their discipline. I am particularly proud to be able to include Crimewave II, who was the Senior Showing and Dressage Ridden Champion at Olympia. You can read more about him and all the other veterans on page 28. As the days grow longer and you all start going out and about more, in preparation for the forthcoming competition season, remember to let us know how you are getting on. Have fun!

Dame Judi Dench receives Copthorne Golf Club’s cheque from Sandy Flynn, with James Baxter and Annie O’Neill-China

Dame Judi accepts a cheque for £10K on behalf of the RDA Dame Judi Dench was thrilled to be asked to accept a cheque from Copthorne Golf Club for more than £10,000 on behalf of the East Park Riding for the Disabled Group at Whitechapel near Lingfield. Dame Judi has been the Group’s patron for many years and has even gifted them her retired racehorse, Smokey Oakey to be re-trained as a Paralympian mount. Dame Judi said: “Everyone who’s worked with the Riding for the Disabled will know how wonderful it is and this donation will make such an important difference to the Group at East Park who do extremely important work. I’ve been involved here for years and it’s simply amazing to see the children enjoying independence and freedom on the back of a horse”. Captains past, present and future from the ladies’ and men’s teams of Copthorne Golf Club attended the presentation which was the result of a year’s charity drive, led by last year’s captains, Sandy Flynn and Paul Delaney, ably assisted by Fines Master Tony MacDonald. “There is a culture among our members to give money at every opportunity to the Club’s annual chosen charity” said Sandy Flynn, “and we have imposed ‘fines’ for all manner of small transgressions, including a very lucrative Swear Box! We’ve also held quiz nights, golf competitions and raffles throughout the year and everyone has been really generous”. Sally chose East Park RDA as the Club’s chosen charity because it was local and involved animals and children. “What better reason do you need” she enthused. As a result of their involvement with the Group, many members have been able to see sessions in action and one is going to become a volunteer this year. James Baxter, East Park RDA Chairman, said “This donation will go a very long way”.

even action packed days of equestrian entertainment filled the wonderful grand hall at Olympia, which combines top level competition with family fun the week before Christmas. The popular Dutch dressage rider Edward Gal and the young stallion Glock’s Zonik (76.68%) claimed the FEI World Cup Dressage Grand Prix supported by Horse & Hound, on the opening night of the show. The win made a cold, slow journey from The Netherlands, that was beset by delays caused by the wintery weather, worthwhile. It was also an impressive display of horsemanship from Gal and talent from the expressive and elegant nine-year-old Glock’s Zonik, who was competing in just his third ever Grand Prix, and now has two wins and a second place on his CV. Highlights of the test include ground covering half-passes and particularly impressive elastic piaffe and passage. Swedish Olympian Patrik Kittel, who also endured a marathon journey to London, came a close second with the Oldenburg gelding Delaunay (75.10%). The pair performed a well presented and confident error free test. “I am very happy to be here for the second time,” said Kittel. “London is such a great show.”

Kittel rocks Olympia Patrik Kittel and Delaunay OLD (Dude) (80.560%) rocked the auditorium with a strong, rhythmic and faultless routine to win the FEI World Cup Freestyle to Music. The Swedish combination displayed a high degree of difficulty in the programme set to a medley by the rock group Guns and Roses, that opened with a zigzag of passage and piaffe, showed controlled double pirouettes to tempi changes and was on the beat throughout. “The sport was really good and the standard was amazing tonight so I am just really happy to secure this win,” said Kittel, 6 Localrider FEBRUARY 2018

whose previous visit to Olympia was 13 years ago – when he then came last. “I just loved how easy Dude found this test which has a high degree of difficulty – he just felt like he was cruising.” The win takes Kittel to the top of the Western European World Cup League and he now looks certain for a place in the FEI World Cup final in Paris in April. It might have seemed a hard act to follow for British rider Emile Faurie and his new ride Delatio (80.405%), but the final combination of the night put in an impressive performance in their first competitive freestyle that made the most of the 13-yearold’s expressive paces, to come within a whisker - 0.155% - of the winner’s score. He is now just the fourth British rider to score over 80% at this venue. “I just feel so lucky that after so many years without a really top horse, I now have a whole string,” said Emile who is now based part-time in Germany. “Delatio does not have a lot of competitive experience, but he is an awesome horse, such a trier and his ability to concentrate is incredible.”

Scope wins the Puissance Britain’s leading lady rider Laura Renwick put on a spectacular performance to win The Cayenne Puissance in front of a packedout grandstand with HRH The Duchess of Cornwall as the guest of honour in the Presidents Box. Laura was overwhelmed by her spectacular victory on Top Dollar Vl in The Cayenne Puissance. Four riders made it to the fifth round, but Karline De Brabander from Belgium on Fantomas de Muze, Ireland’s Padraic Judge on City Business and 2016 joint winner Holly Smith on Quality Old Joker all faulted and as Laura entered the ring she knew the €7,425 prize was there for the taking.

Olympia’s official charity was Hannah’s Willberry Wonder Pony, helping to raise donations was Doris, pictured with James Francis (Hannah’s father) and Ted, pictured with Alice Goring “That wall is huge and, having seen the other horses hit it, having been jumping really well, I knew it was a big ask,” said Laura afterwards. “I was a little bit lucky – I didn’t have the best stride and the horse really had to use his body to get over it. I’ve never won the Puissance outright and so to do it on an eight-yearold horse with not much experience but loads of scope and heart feels amazing. The atmosphere was electric.”

World Class Show Jumping Julien Epaillard, riding Toupie de la Roque, became only the second Frenchman in history to win the Olympia leg of the Longines FEI World Cup Jumping, thanks to a spectacular burst of speed in the jump-off which relegated last year’s winner, Scott Brash, to second place. “It is a great honour for me to win at Olympia,” said the 40-yearold, who was 0.43 seconds faster than Scott. “It was a very difficult course, very technical – you needed scope but also great control.” Course-designer Guillaume Jorge, who officiated at the Rio Olympics last year, set the high-quality field, which included six of the world’s top 10 riders, quite a challenge, and it wasn’t until the 21st to go, European Champion Peder Fredricson on H&M Christian K, that there was a clear round. Other entertainment included the Chilean Huasos, the Metropolitan Police Activity Ride, the Shetland Grand National, Dog Agility and of course, Father Christmas. FEBRUARY 2018 Localrider 7

No Income Tax... No VAT? Whatever business you are running, there is not much that is more complicated than VAT, and even if you are VAT registered you will find some things are VAT exempt, while others most certainly are VATable. Working with horses is never straightforward and it is exactly the same when it comes to VAT and equestrian businesses. In this article, Janet Pierce of Charter Tax explains when VAT applies, what and what isn’t VATable and how a good accountant will help you survive the minefield . Livery Fees For quite some years everyone really assumed that livery fees would be subject to VAT at the standard rate (assuming the livery business is over the turnover threshold / is VAT registered). However, a case then went to the Tribunal to challenge this position. The Tribunal held that in the case of most types of livery the “dominant” supply was the fact that the customer (i.e. the person with their horse in livery) receives the use of a specific stable. As such, the supply is treated as “related to land” and therefore treated as VAT exempt – unless the livery yard owner “opts to tax” the land. Now, being VAT exempt certainly has its advantages as it means the livery yard owner doesn’t need to charge VAT on the livery. However, it also means that the livery yard owner can’t reclaim the VAT on their associated costs – which isn’t too bad as a lot of their costs won’t have VAT on them (e.g. staff costs). Where it will be a problem for livery yard owners, though, is if they have spent

Pics by Jon Stroud and Nigel Goddard

S

o, we get pretty used to paying VAT on most things, don’t we? But have you ever given much thought to the impact of VAT on your horse expenditure (or income)? You may well be aware that the basic starting point for VAT is that once a business has turnover over £83,000 then it needs to register for VAT and start charging VAT at 20%. However, not all business turnover is actually subject to VAT. It’s a massively complex area (how on earth HMRC expect anyone who hasn’t trained as an accountant to understand the rules is beyond me), but I’ve highlighted below some of the key points to be aware of. Bear in mind in all this that profitability is not a pre-requisite for VAT registration; VAT is based on turnover, not profit. However, being “in business” is a prerequisite – so if your horse activities amount to a hobby not a business then you may not have to worry about VAT (although if you’re making losses you may have to think hard about whether you want to say your activity is a hobby or a business, because of course hobbies don’t attract any tax deductions for the losses involved).

Charter Tax was founded in 2009 by Janet Pierce (neé Paterson) as a full service accounting firm with a particular specialism in tax matters. Janet herself is a keen equestrian, with a small yard and seven horses of her own. Charter Tax are also proud sponsors of Francis Whittington Eventing.

10 Localrider FEBRUARY 2018

a lot on construction costs / building a new yard, etc – as most of those sorts of costs will have VAT and the livery yard owner won’t be able to reclaim that VAT unless they “opt to tax” over the land – meaning that they turn an otherwise VAT exempt supply into a fully VATable supply. So, there’s a calculation to be done – does the livery yard owner suffer in effect a loss of ongoing income (as some of the livery fees have to be paid over to the VAT man), but recover the VAT on all their costs, or does the livery yard owner keep all the income, but suffer the VAT on expenses. This really is where a good accountant helps! But it gets even more complicated than that. The original Tribunal case that viewed most types of livery as the supply of a specific stable is arguably a bit questionable – there’s a lot of different types of livery and more than that, it’s slightly always surprised me that the case has never been challenged; after all, when you have your horse in livery do you really worry about the stable so much, or do you worry about the overall care of the horse? Where a horse is away at a specific training livery (e.g. breaking / rehab, etc), HMRC are much more likely to argue that the main supply is the training (VATable) rather than the stable. Conversely, if the “livery” is in fact strictly grass keep, then it could be zero-rated for VAT purposes. Zero rating is the holy grail of VAT status really, as it means that the supplier (the livery yard owner) doesn’t have to charge VAT, but also still gets to recover the VAT on their associated costs. So, as you may gather, each different type of livery will require a proper analysis.

Teaching

I’m not sure there are many people that earn their living from teaching riding and who earn over the VAT registration threshold (£83,000). If you do – well done. However, there probably would be a few more yards around (e.g. riding schools) that do have income over the VAT registration threshold and so they need to think about whether or not their income for teaching riding is VATable. You might initially assume that, if the teacher is VAT registered then they would need to charge VAT. However, there is a specific exemption for: ‘the supply of private tuition, in a subject ordinarily taught in a school or university, by an individual teacher acting independently of an employer’. I’m not sure whether I ever remember riding being taught when I was at school (….. I’m old…..), but these days actually it often is, so potentially a riding instructor’s teaching income could fall within this exemption. However, there is a proviso that they are taught “to a level similar to those being conducted by educational establishments across the country”…. Whatever that means. Probably, that means that if you’re an olympic medalist being coached by Yogi, then your coach won’t be able to fall within this VAT exemption. However, if you’re a riding instructor at the local riding school then probably the exemption applies for a lot (maybe all) of your lessons.

Horse Sales

Horse sales are one thing in particular where – if you sell a few good ones – you might be more likely to find yourself over the VAT registration threshold. That said, there is something of a recognition from HMRC that often horse dealers will buy from someone who is a private seller and therefore isn’t VAT registered and as such it would be a bit harsh to charge VAT on the full sale price charged by the dealer when there won’t have been any VAT to offset when the dealer purchased the horse. As such there is a “margin scheme” available for sales of “second hand ponies / horses”. So, if a dealer buys a horse from a private seller for £10k and sells it for £15k then the dealer only has to charge VAT on their £5k margin. Note, though, that if you were the breeder of the horse, then – to you – that horse isn’t second hand and as such you can’t use the margin scheme, I’m afraid!

VAT is a Simple Tax???

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again… how on earth HMRC expect anyone who hasn’t trained as an accountant to understand the rules is beyond me. Sadly, though, I’ve dealt with a lot of enquiry cases

Janet Pierce of Charter Tax competing Sydserff Finnadoon

from HMRC where – as far as they are concerned – that’s not their problem, they expect anyone in business to understand the rules that apply to them – and they’re not afraid to charge penalties if the poor business owner gets it wrong. So, do check out the rules first before you get it wrong, and I’d be delighted to hear from you if you need any help. If you have found this article of interest and would like to find out more about VAT and other tax matters, then contact Janet Pierce at Charter Tax.

Before heading off, make sure you have ridden in your competition tack to ensure it fits, and is safe; in fact, now’s a good time to evaluate all of your tack and training, as well as your knowledge of the rules. Here are some reminders for the eventing season:

Stephens’s Adjustable Hunt Breastplate

Plan some cross-country training this spring

Stephens Running Martingale

feature

Breastplates help keep the saddle in place, and provide a useful ‘grab strap’. Stephens’s Adjustable Hunt Breastplate has a useful running martingale attachment. Studguard girths are generally used during the jumping phases, protecting the abdomen of the horse from stud injuries. Stephen’s Padded Studguard girth is contoured to avoid the sensitive area behind the elbow.

What to do this month:

1. Take your horse to a cross-country training venue; the ideal way to prepare for the season, without the pressure of having to complete a course. 2. Work on your flatwork at home; it is the basis for all jumping work, and may have been compromised over the winter. 3. Set goals! Do you have a training goal? Write down your eventing resolutions for 2018, aiding proactivity and positivity. Visit www.localrider.co.uk/diary for events across the Localrider Magazine region. Visit www.britisheventing.com for a full list of rule amendments for 2018. Visit www.worldwidetack.com to see these products and more.

• J acket-wise, competitors up to and including intermediate level may choose a jacket or fitted waistcoat in a single, conservative colour. Tweed jackets may be worn, but must not be brightly coloured or have loud patterns. • I f a fall occurs in the show jumping phase, the bell is rung and the clock stopped while the rider remounts and / or the jump is rebuilt — six seconds will be added to the competitor’s time, and the clock is restarted after mounting. • S afety first! Riders falling on the cross-country course must now be checked by a paramedic or doctor, before continuing. • T aking a companion horse to a British Eventing (BE) event? You must now seek permission from the organiser before bringing him, registering him upon arrival with the secretary - take a spare bridle number set, which include discs and numbers, for this horse. • T here’s a new hat tag on the block. The ‘aqua’ colour is accepted across BE, Pony Club and British Riding Club events. Up-tostandard protective headwear is required whenever mounted at a BE national event. Cross-country helmets should have no peaks, or peak type extensions. • B ody Protectors must be BETA Level 3 / 2009; the year 2000 is not permitted. (Exo BodyCage protectors are allowed, if declared to the event secretary.) • Stop watches are permitted at one-day-events. • Y our horse’s vaccinations must be up to date well in advance of the event; bring the passport with you.

What tack shall I use?

A standard cavesson noseband always looks smart, and is a musthave on any double bridle. We love the Stephens Plain Cavesson Noseband, in 1” wide leather. Martingales are used to help the rider control the head carriage of the horse. A running martingale is permitted and is often seen during the show jumping and cross-country phases. The Stephens Running Martingale is a great quality product and also includes a D ring for a standing martingale attachment, great for training, e.g. at clinics or at home. february 2018 Localrider 21

pplications are now open for a training course designed to recruit students at equine colleges to work in the racing industry. Launched last year as part of ongoing efforts to attract more racing staff, the Entry to Employment Programme gives those who already have hands-on experience with horses the chance of a career in British racing. Cliona Suggett, who completed the course at the British Racing School in 2017, said: “I loved the course, and the British Racing School has helped provide me with the experience and knowledge to allow me to take on an amazing job at a yard. All the staff couldn’t be any more supportive in my career and their knowledge about the industry truly shows in their teaching. It was a great course for college graduates like myself who thought we were too late coming into the industry.”

Interested in a career in racing, the free Entry to Employment Programme could be perfect for you

Fancy a Career in Racing?

Residential Courses The course consists of a five-week residential training course followed by a work placement at a training yard and will teach students the specifics of how to ride and look after racehorses. Applicants must have recently graduated or be in their final year of studies for an equine or animal-related qualification at an equine college and have a strong interest and desire to work with racehorses. Trainer Andrew Balding said: “This is an excellent programme that will give equestrian students direct access into the racing industry, not just as a potential jockey but for other sides of the industry too. We hope we, at Kingsclere, can continue to work alongside Careers in Racing by offering students placements which show them the real life within a racing yard.” The residential courses will run during the summer months at both the British Racing School in Newmarket and the Northern Racing College in Doncaster, with applications now open until April.

Assessment Day Successful applicants will be invited to attend an assessment day which will include an interview and assessment of riding ability, fitness and suitability for the course. Michelle Douglas, 80% of last year’s students are now working Careers Marketing & in the racing industry Recruitment Advisor at the British Horseracing Authority, said: “We were pleased with the results of the 2017 Entry to Employment Programme, with over 80% of the students who took part being placed into employment in racing. We are looking to build on the numbers in

2018 and I would encourage any equine college students who love horses and have never considered a career in racing to give it a try.” The course is aimed at equine college students in the UK to provide a new training and entry route into British racing. The training course is free, but the students will need to pay for their accommodation. Applications for 2018 course close in April. For more information please visit www.careersinracing.com

Cushings & EMS Words by Dr. C. Baldwin, BVetMed, MRCVS of Sussex Equine Hospital Cushings (Pars Pituitary Intermedius Disorder ((PPID)) and Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS) are the two most common metabolic/hormone disorders of the horse and pony. In general, Cushings affects older horses, whereas EMS first develops in young and middle-aged animals. Although they are two separate conditions, they can overlap. All breeds are susceptible, but ponies are most at risk.

Cushings This is due to a dysfunction in a small area of the horse’s brain and it disrupts the normal balance of hormones, mainly affecting ACTH and cortisol (stress hormones). The most common signs are your horse developing a long, thick, curly coat or not losing his/her winter coat. Other early signs of Cushings are vague but include; reduced performance, lethargy and regional fat deposits (bulging supraorbital fat pads, shoulder fat pads, “cresty neck” and fat accumulation around their tail base). The more advanced signs of the disease include; muscle wasting, a pendulous abdomen, sway back, increased sweating (linked to not shedding their coat), blindness, recurrent infections (including parasites, skin infections and synovitis), reduced fertility in mares and increase drinking and urination.

Laminitis The most import aspect of this disease is laminitis; this can feature early on in the disease process and is usually the condition which leads to diagnosis of Cushing’s. Laminitis is an inflammation and breakdown of the lamellae. The lamellae suspends and supports the pedal bone within the hoof capsule. When these lamellae are disrupted, the pedal bone sinks and rotates which then causes lameness. Cushings causes a break down in the lamellae proteins and reduces lamellae blood flow. This is why horses with Cushings are predisposed to laminitis. Diagnosis is usually made on history and clinical examination, however, to be sure a blood test is usually conducted. The blood test measures the hormone ACTH as horses and ponies with Cushings have significantly higher levels of ACTH. It is not 100% diagnostic and may miss early cases, but will confirm most and gives you the ability

to measure the success of treatment. The hormone ACTH usually peaks in the autumn naturally and so this is the best time of year to test horses suspected of having Cushings. When determining baseline ACTH concentrations, it is important to consider that stress may increase ACTH levels, so the horse must first recover from any bouts of stress or laminitis. Other tests are available if the result of this test does not match with the clinical picture of the horse.

Management of Cushings

Cushings is a condition mainly of older horses and so management is vital, including: feeding high-quality foods, regular dental care, deworming, and farrier care. Management and treatment depends on severity of the condition, if the horse has a hairy coat then you can manage them simply with regular clipping. However, if the horse or pony is suffering from laminitis then management and pharmacological intervention will be required. Pergolide ‘Pracend’ is the first-line treatment of horses and ponies with Cushings. it is a lifelong treatment that needs to be coupled with management changes. Once a treatment has been started, if there are no signs of improvement after four to six weeks, the dose should be increased gradually every three to four weeks. Treatment should be monitored by assessing both improvement of clinical signs and repeat blood tests to check for normalisation of ACTH concentrations. Most horses show improvement within six to eight weeks of treatment. Within a month you can expect to see an improved attitude and reduced lethargy, however, improvements in coat, muscle mass and laminitis may take up to a year. This is a lifelong management that needs to include laminitis management as well.

EMS

EMS occurs because fat tissue is active and produces its own hormones. These hormones reduce your horse’s response to insulin, making your horse insulin resistant (IR), this leads to a high concentration of both insulin and glucose in your horse’s blood stream (it also increases the level of cortisol, like in Cushings). This condition in very basic terms can be considered “Horse Diabetes”, with a bit of Cushings. These horses are usually obese or “good doers” however, some horses can be lean but still have EMS. EMS is characterised by obesity or regional adiposity, insulin resistance (IR), and subclinical or clinical laminitis. Laminitis is the most important component of EMS;

this condition is most difficult to manage. IR predisposes a horse to laminitis by altering blood flow and reducing nutrient delivery to the hoof tissues and generating inflammatory or oxidative damage. EMS horses therefore cannot tolerate normal laminitis triggers such as; grass rich in sugars and starches; grazing in abundance and rapidly growing grass; grazing after a frost or in periods of cold nights and warm days (this changes the sugars within the grass and they become more readily available).

Diagnosing EMS

Diagnosis is made on clinical examination and history but there are blood tests that can confirm the diagnosis and again it is good to have a base line from which to judge the success of treatment. To diagnose EMS in horses, insulin and glucose concentrations can be measured in a blood test. Horses are starved for six hours over night and a blood test taken in the morning. Stress raises insulin concentrations in horses, so it is important not to take a blood sample whilst the horse is suffering from laminitis. Another test available is an Oral Glucose Test, the horse is starved overnight for six hours then a blood sample is taken in the morning before giving a high glucose feed (1g/kg) in a very small feed. After this, blood samples are collected two and four hours later.

Management of IR/EMS

Management of IR/EMS involves mainly weight loss and laminitis management. This can be achieved by reducing sugar and starch intake, soaking hay, removing fat supplements, restricting turnout and regular daily light exercise. Exercise when the horse is sound is essential as it can decrease IR. Leaner horses with EMS are challenging to manage from a dietary standpoint because more calories must be provided without exacerbating IR. Most horses or ponies with EMS can be effectively managed by controlling the diet and reducing body fat, however, it takes time for these management changes to take effect, so drugs such as Metformin can aid the process and accelerate the improvement if the patient suffers from recurrent laminitis. For both these conditions, the horse needs to be treated as an individual so close work with your vet and farrier is essential in successful management. If you have any concerns, your horse or pony may be suffering from Cushings or EMS then contact your vet for a consultation. For more information visit: www.sussexequinehospital.co.uk

feature Heidi gives her horses time to get used to water

Take your time when introducing water

Introducing Your Horse to Water British Horse Feeds sponsored event rider and well known young horse producer Heidi Woodhead explains how to introduce horses to water as part of their cross-country education. Heidi looks at how to begin jumping into and out of water, while also providing tips on how to help the cautious horse.

I

t is easy to think that introducing your horse to water will be a nerve racking and stressful experience for both you and your horse but with patience, understanding and clear guidance it should be exciting and rewarding for you both. The initial introduction to water should be done calmly and quietly. By taking your time and listening to your horse you will build trust and confidence from the beginning of the experience, it is important to create these feelings from the start. To ensure that your horse associates the water with positivity make sure to reward him.

Give your horse a lead

If your horse is very green it may help to give him a lead in from a reliable, experienced horse that can help to assist him. Having a lead horse will show him that there is nothing to fear. It is amazing to see just how much another horse gives the green horse a boost of confidence, allowing him to see the other horse is in no danger and displaying no concern in what he is being asked to do. On his own the inexperienced horse will not know anything about the water, he will be questioning, if the water has a firm bottom, how deep is the water, what is beneath the water, is there something in the water that can hurt him, he cannot be expected to know all these answers.

Check the water

Take the time to allow your horse to feel relaxed

You must check that the water is safe before every practice so you do not destroy the horse’s trust and confidence from an early bad experience. As a result of careful mileage, the horse will gain as much trust in his rider as he has with any lead horse. It is advisable to attempt a simple natural water hazard such as a ford or shallow river instead of immediately trying to jump in off a bank. Walk quietly into the water instead of jumping immediately in off a bank, this will deter negative experiences of water for your horse. When you are in the water, at a constant pace try to walk your horse through or around in a positive but not rushed frame of mind. By introducing your horse to water as frequently as possible in the initial stages, it will become less of an issue each time.

Jumping into water

Positive encouragement is key

When first beginning to jump into water, chose a small plain bank selecting a simple approach. A water complex is a good place to start as they have the option of an alternative entrance that doesn’t involve a jump. Try the exercise in trot, allowing your horse sufficient time to assess the situation in his approach. Build strength in the last few strides, it is important not to ride in with too much speed as this will surprise the horse, not knowing how he may react. Encourage your horse with both your legs and voice to ensure he jumps cleanly in. Repeat this process until he no longer hesitates before attempting the jump in canter. When in canter, do not go too fast. The water could suddenly slow your progress causing the horse to lose balance as his legs are held back by the drag effect of the water. Shallow water would be most sensible for an inexperienced horse at this stage. If your horse becomes cautious with the idea of lowering himself into water, positively ride him forward to encourage him to stretch himself into a jump. Remember that it is not sufficient for him to step in, one foot after another. Make sure to put him in front of the leg. Once you have presented a horse to a fence do not give up, however do not attempt to present him to a fence if you do not feel you are in a position to help your horse. Once in the water ride the horse forward. Do not let him become too timid or change the speed of his pace. This will help for the next stage when he jumps fences sited in water. If you find your horse launching himself into the water and rushing through, this is usually because he has a fear of the water. To overcome this, approach quietly, reducing the speed and once in the water try to remain in the water, circling or stopping, making sure that your horse does not take charge and remove himself from the water on his own accord.

Stay in balance at all times

Reward, Repeat, Reward

Heidi’s Favourite Feed Fibre-Beet Heidi feeds Fibre-Beet to her team of horses. She says: “Fibre-Beet is brilliant for our competition horses. It keeps them in fantastic condition and is very easy to use.” A super-fibre conditioning feed, FibreBeet is a formulated blend containing all the benefits of the original Speedi-Beet product, with added high quality Alfalfa for optimum condition and to provide quality protein for muscle tone and function.

Reward your horse and then come out of the water. Repeat this exercise until the horse becomes more settled. Make sure that you do not catch the horse in the mouth and be prepared to slip the reins on entry to avoid this. Try to land on your stirrups opposed to the horses back. At times when jumping out of the water it is easy for a fall or problem to occur. When travelling through the water obstacle, try to keep your horse as together as possible. If you are in canter, keep it short and bouncy. Make sure you maintain a rhythm and do not anticipate the take-off spot. Your ability to judge distance may be affected by the way the horse reacts to the effects of the water splash or depth to list a couple of potential contributing factors. You may find that some horses shorten their steps as a result of the water splash whilst some do the opposite and attempt to clear the water and exaggerate their strides which is something to take note on so that you can effectively maintain balance and connection without losing impulsion. It is important to always remember to be patient and be prepared to educate your horse quietly with water. Keep calm and relaxed throughout the training session

Fibre-Beet has been carefully designed to help keep the digestive system healthy with a blend of fibre sources that provide gut fill and are easily digested when compared to forage fibre. It can improve energy intake whilst keeping dietary fibre levels at an optimum providing slow release energy without ‘fizz’. www.britishhorsefeeds.com

Feed news

Joints & Suppleness Words by Evangaline Atterby BSc (Hons) Bioveterinary Science, Nutritional Advisor and Technical Assistant at NAF

As we get older we often get the odd creak and groan, perhaps we take a little longer to free up when we get up in the morning or we just don’t quite cover the ground like before. All these little signs of aging can affect our horses just as much, except we make far greater demands of their joints over their lifetime. So what can we do to support suppleness in our horses and ponies? Joint Supplements One of the most common types of supplements available are joint supplements. Going into any tack shop or feed merchant, will show you a vast array of products in different forms, liquids, powders, pellets, and all proclaiming to be the better product available. It can seem daunting, but if you just look for a few key components you can make life a lot easier for yourself. Everyone is familiar with Glucosamine, commonly used in humans, but the form it comes in can have an effect on its efficacy. Glucosamine Sulphate is more readily absorbed by the body, due to molecule size and so this is preferable to the more commonly used Hydrochloride form. Glucosamine works best when used in conjunction with other key joint nutrients,

such as Chondroitin, again the Sulphate form is better absorbed. Using a product which contains a blend of these ingredients produces a synergistic effect, offering support to a number of areas of the joint. The benefits of a synergistic product is that the final product is greater than the sum of its parts, so always remember a blend of joint friendly ingredients will be better than any one component alone.

Maintaining healthy joints Daily life of the horse produces microdamage within the joints, so ridden work asks a great deal more of the animal meaning that potential for microdamage increases considerably, potentially leading to weakness or discomfort as the cartilage may wear away. Offering a good quality joint support product can help to maintain

healthy joints for longer, so where possible feeding from a young age is a good approach. Once we start to see signs of stiffness, there is often already a problem present, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t start to use a joint product if our horse is already older. Higher specification products, which include antioxidants to flush the free radicals from the system, often have greater quantities of the key joint nutrients within them. These are often specifically formulated for our veteran equine partners and can be teamed with a comfort product as their needs require. Remember if you are still competing, Devils Claw is a prohibited substance under FEI rules, so make sure you check your products before competition. If in doubt, ask the manufacturer and always look for UFAS and BETA NOPS accreditations as marks of quality. february 2018 Localrider 55

FEED NEWS

Feeding the Veteran Horse & Pony Looking after a veteran horse or pony can seem very complicated at times. It feels like they can lose weight over night and can be stiff one day, while not another. These days, there is a whole range of feed and supplements specifically aimed at veteran horses, which can help them maintain their sparkle. We hope you find this feature useful, but please remember all of the feed companies can offer further advice.

Every 2kg of Senior Support provides 4g of Glucosamine HCL to support joint mobility along with 5g of Yeasacc1026 to help ensure a healthy hind gut. Biotin is added to help promote strong hooves, together with high levels of antioxidants and natural herbs spearmint and garlic, making this the feed of choice to help meet the extra nutritional needs of your veteran. www.rowenbarbary.co.uk

Equerry Conditioning Mash is a quick-soaking mash for horses that need to gain weight and condition. It is a ‘Non-Heating’ formula with low levels of starch and has a good level of protein for muscle development and topline. Highly-digestible fibre sources include sugar beet; while oil and linseed promote condition and a shiny coat. A high level of yeast promotes a healthy digestive system, with added vitamins and minerals including magnesium.

Sixteen Plus Mix

www.equerryhorsefeeds.com

Sixteen Plus Mix is ideal for the older horse or pony showing signs of aging or weight loss. Sixteen Plus has been specifically formulated using international studies on the nutritional requirements of the older horse, and is the ideal solution for your veteran. It is high calorie to prevent weight loss or loss of condition. High in fibre and oil, plus quality digestible protein with added Lysine to support the muscle mass. It has added live Actisaf yeast to support digestive function.

Mollichaff Veteran

Cushcare Conditioner Cushcare Conditioner is a complimentary feed for underweight horses that need a diet lower in starch and sugar. Cushcare Condition has been scientifically designed by the experts at Dodson & Horrell to provide conditioning calories in a low starch, low sugar format that is suitable for horses prone to laminitis. High in oil and fibre to provide calories for weight gain and condition without adding starch. www.dodsonandhorrell.com

Equerry Conditioning Mash for All-Round Great Health

Mollichaff Veteran from HorseHage is a high fibre forage mix that has been specially formulated for older horses and ponies, but it is also a great product for those that are unable to consume long forage and require a partial hay replacer. Many equines, particularly as they get older, have loose or missing teeth and cannot chew long stemmed forage such as hay or haylage. If you notice bits of partially chewed forage dropping from your horse’s mouth or scattered on the floor, this is a tell-tale sign that he is struggling to cope. Mollichaff Veteran is made from chopped ingredients, so it is easy to manage and is very palatable too, making it great for fussy feeders. It is made from a balanced blend of dried grass, dried alfalfa and high-quality oat straw and is topped with a unique dressing combining linseed and soya oil with a small amount of low sugar molasses and added vitamins and minerals, plant-based antioxidants, biotin, mint, nettle and salt. Linseed oil is a rich source of amino acids and essential fatty acids including Omega 3. Antioxidants from a plant-based source are included to help combat free radicals and maintain your horse in good health and nettles are naturally high in vitamins and minerals. Mint contains flavanoids that act to relax the digestive tract and most horses also find the aroma and taste of mint to be particularly appealing; and salt provides two important electrolytes – sodium and chloride. Mollichaff Veteran also contains added limestone to provide additional calcium and biotin for healthy hoof growth. www.horsehage.co.uk

NAF Superflex Senior Five Star Superflex Senior is a unique formulation providing NAF’s highest specification of the key joint support nutrients for horses, working in synergy with rich natural sources of Omega 3 fatty acids and naturally sourced antioxidants to support healthy, flexible joints in older horses and ponies still leading active lives. www.naf-equine.eu/uk

NAF In the Pink Senior For all Old Age Performers, In the Pink Senior is specially formulated to meet all the nutritional requirements of the older horse and is designed to give him all the support he needs to stay active and feeling forever young. In the Pink Senior helps balance the diet and the digestive system, which enables the horse to maximise the value of his feed intake. It provides pre and probiotics for optimum support of the gut, and supplies all the vitamins and minerals required by the older horse for all round health. In the Pink Senior also supplies a unique combination of naturally sourced antioxidant ingredients to flush excess free radicals from the system, as well as providing nutrients to support joint health. Specially chosen herbs support a youthful spark. In the Pink Senior is recommended for all older horses and ponies, whether signs of age are obvious or not. www.naf-equine.eu/uk

Baileys Top Line Conditioning Cubes Baileys Top Line Conditioning Cubes promote weight gain and condition, providing highly digestible calories and top quality protein, so they do exactly what their name suggests. Now boosted with additional antioxidants, from grapeseed extract, vitamins C and E and organic selenium, the run down or hard working horse will benefit from extra support for the immune system. With a probiotic yeast and Digest Plus prebiotic “top line cubes” also help encourage digestive efficiency and all without the need to add a balancer or muscle supplement, when fed at recommended levels. www.baileyshorsefeeds.co.uk

Special Promotion on TopSpec Additives and Supplement The TopSpec range of additives and supplement has recently been relaunched and repackaged with eye-catching new labels, new tub sizes and new additions. Throughout February and March there is a fantastic 25% off all six in the range. The TopSpec range includes new TopSpec Electrolytes as well as TopSpec 10:10 Joint Support, TopSpec Calmer, TopSpec Digestive Aid, TopSpec Healthy Hoof and TopSpec All-in-One. www.topspec.com

Lifeforce Focus

Lifeforce Focus, the supplement from Alltech is specially designed for leisure and companion horses and those that may spend more time grazing, helping to create a healthy digestive environment. Studies have shown that Lifeforce contains yeast products that optimize digestive health and address challenges related to body condition, a common problem among veteran horses and ponies.

TopSpec Electrolytes

www.lifeforcehorse.co.uk

New TopSpec Electrolytes are designed to help compensate for electrolyte loss after heavy sweating. This new additive has a high salt formula, contains wildberry to aid palatability and is recommended by equine veterinary practices and independent nutritionists. A horse has only to become mildly dehydrated in order to lose performance, sometimes reported as a lack of stamina and slow recovery rates. If the losses of electrolytes are very high a disruption in the balance of electrical charge both inside and outside of a muscle cell can upset normal contraction and relaxation processes. TopSpec Electrolytes can be fed to horses to help compensate for electrolyte loss during sweating, with many resulting benefits. www.topspec.com

Megan and Tom

Where to go Cross Country Schooling Friends have fun at East Bysshe Feeding & Caring for the Laminitic Horse or Pony

Megan Blake sent these pictures, which were taken when she took her loan horse, Tom, cross-country for the first time. Megan said: “My friend Jazmin Angell and her pony Aqua, joined Tom and me at East Bysshe cross-country, where we had the time of our lives! Aqua thought the best way to get into the water was going in backwards. You can really see the friendship in Tom and Aqua, as well as Jazz and me. This was Tom’s first time out at cross country. He was a very well-behaved boy and went over everything I asked him to. Although it was very cold it was worthwhile, and a very enjoyable experience.”

First time out at Bonfleur
