82 March Competition winners

have really enjoyed working on this issue as there are so many different stories and pictures of riders taking part in probably every discipline possible. One of my favourite horses featured this month is Clyde. He was rescued from slaughter in Italy and ridden back across Europe to England and is now owned by Sevenoaks Riding Club member Sarah Owlett and competed by Fiona Mullick. Turn to page 14 to find out more. I couldn’t resist a My other favourites include our cover stars, Eric and Ernie. We cuddle with Valegro at a recent visit to first featured them last year and when Nigel Goddard told me he Carl Hester’s yard. had been back to take some new pictures for their first birthday I felt compelled to share them. Turn to page 16 to see more adorable and amusing pictures of Eric and Ernie. Back at Localrider HQ we are preparing for the Longines Royal International Show, which starts on Tuesday 29th July. We have a stand at the Royal International and Dressage at Hickstead this year, so we hope to catch up with as many of you as we can. It is your chance to let us know what you would like to see in the magazine and who you think we should be featuring. Plus we will have lots of competitions and chances to win prizes too. There are two free entry tickets for either the Thursday or the Friday on page 51 of this issue, so why not get together with your friends from the yard and have a fantastic day out at Hickstead. Just as we were about to go to print the British Equestrian Federation announced some of the squads for the World Equestrian Games in Normandy, France later this summer. We have a full squad of Kent and Sussex riders representing British Reining and both Pippa Funnell and Tina Cook are on the eventing squad. Remember to keep me informed of any good results. Good Luck!

Having Trouble Getting Motor Insurance? SEIB offer risk evaluation and insurance quotations for those with unusual motor insurance requirements. Many people have problems getting motor insurance because there is something in their history that means they are unable to declare a clean driving record, but South Essex Insurance Brokers (SEIB) say that need not prevent them from getting insurance. Turning to the internet for an insurance quote may be convenient, but applications are processed automatically using preset questions and for those who give non-standard answers, this can mean insurance is refused or the quote is prohibitively expensive. Unusual answers to questions relating to driving history, modified vehicles, occupation, accident record, criminal convictions and unconventional commercial vehicles can all trigger rejection of an insurance application. However, for drivers aged 25 or over, talking to an SEIB advisor may be the answer. Drivers are encouraged to call and speak to an insurance advisor, a real person based at SEIB’s headquarters in Essex, for advice. This personal service means that a real human being at the end of the phone will evaluate the risk and provide a quotation backed by an established UK insurer. Drivers can be confident that their insurance cover will be valid and they have not told any untruths to get the cover. “Automated quotations often do not allow enough flexibility to take account of any unusual circumstances relating to the applicant. Our experienced insurance advisors are able to assess the risk from a human perspective and can then offer the most appropriate insurance”, says Suzy Middleton, Director at South Essex Insurance Brokers. South Essex Insurance Brokers have been established for over 50 years and are recognised as being in the top 75 brokers in the UK. They specialise in niche market insurance cover, creating and developing insurance products to meet the more unusual needs of their customers, and have won numerous industry awards for customer service. To speak to a knowledgeable person about an insurance quote, call 0845 873 4920.

Is there any point in lungeing an older horse? Horses, like humans generally become stiffer and less mobile as they age. Reducing the workload coupled with a change to the type of work can keep a horse happy and healthy for longer. Veteran horses don’t really thrive on being retired after an active life and, in a similar way to humans, benefit greatly from gentle exercise. Regular light exercise helps with joint mobility and general stiffness issues that afflict veterans. Encouraging stretching, bending, stepping under, swinging through the back are simple exercises that can be done in fifteen minutes on the lunge a couple of times a week and are more effective done using a lunge such as the EquiAmi which gently persuades rather than forces the issue. The warm up and cool down phases are even more important to the veteran as the muscles and joints will take longer to fully mobilize and need to cool down gently afterwards. The upside is that your veteran enjoys an improved quality of life and your guilt at seeing him bored in the field is lessened. Providing your vet is happy that your veteran can undertake some light physical, exercise there is a lot of pleasure to be had in keeping him as mobile as possible. www.equiami.com

Families come first at Cranleigh Show At the Cranleigh Show on Saturday 2nd August, children pay just £1 each to enter showground. This is a new initiative by Cranleigh and South East Agricultural Society aimed at making this wonderful rural day out as family friendly as possible. The show programme has things for all everyone to see and do. It is a great place to meet a whole range of farm animals, from long horned Highland cattle to rare-breed sheep, magnificent pigs to dinky pygmy goats which will all be competing for coveted championships. And children will also be able to get close up to smaller animals in the Fisher’s Farm Park display. The horse show has also been redesigned to make it a fun event for all horse and pony owners. There will be classes suitable for all levels, from lead rein to ridden hunters and re-trained race horses. So if you have a pony, bring it along and have a go! The popular heavy horse competition is back, along with the stylish private and light trade turnout driving classes. Main arena events include the Kangaroo Kid and his Joey, one of the most exciting aerobatic quad-bike displays in the world. Who jumps higher, revs faster, the Kangaroo or his Joey?

Doug Allen competing at WEG in 2010

Doug Allen from Bodiam, East Sussex, Josh Collins from Royal Tunbridge Wells, Kent, Francesca Sternberg from Bodiam, East Sussex and Jessica Sternberg from Bodiam, East Sussex have been selected to represent British Reining at the 2014 Alltech World Equestrian Games, which take place in Normandy, France during 23rd August – 7th September. Shane Borland from Stratford-upon-Avon in Warwickshire, will compete as an individual.

Lungeing for veterans

The team boasts three members of the same family, with Jessica Sternberg set to line-up alongside her aunt and uncle, GBR team stalwarts Francesca Sternberg and Doug Allen, for the first time at a World Games. Chef d’Equipe Adam Heaton, commented: “I’m really pleased with the team we have heading to the World Games this year and I’m looking forward to working with such a talented group of athletes. Doug Allen said: “It’s really exciting to be selected, this will be my fourth WEG and I’m just as excited about this one as I was for my first. I think we have a good team and good horses; we have a team of experienced riders with three of us having ridden at previous WEGs and I think we have a good chance of getting things done out there. It should be really fun and I’m really looking forward to going. In Lexington we used borrowed horses, but with Normandy being so much closer to home we can take our own; we know our horses really well and will feel much more prepared and confident. My wife [Francesca Sternberg] has been on all three of the previous WEG teams with me and this year with Jessica [Doug’s niece], being able to do this as a family and having a good delegation of British support out in Normandy will make it pretty special.” Josh Collins said: “I am very excited; it’s my first WEG and it’s just such an honour – I can’t wait. We’ve [the Sternberg’s] been family friends for ages and known each other for years so it’ll be a little easier as we’re all on the same wavelength. I’m really excited to see the other events; I think it will be one of the highlights and to support the other Brits as well. We’ll have a strong contingent of fans heading out to support us, one of the beauties of it being so close to home.”

This year the Richard Onslow pub in Cranleigh High Street is taking part, creating a pop-up pub on the showground and featuring beer from the Firebird Brewery, just down the road in Rudgwick. Firebird is a new micro brewery run by experienced brewsters who just couldn’t quite retire. Tickets available online at www.cranleighshow.co.uk with great early booking discounts: Adult £11 (£14 on the day); Seniors £7 (£10) and Children 5-16 accompanied by an adult £1. Under 5s FREE.

A hunting funeral that Sussex will long remember took place in May at Ringmer Church for Ian Askew MC., DL., patron of the South of England Hound Show, owner of the Southdown & Eridge Hunt Kennels at Ringmer, substantial landowner in the area, Joint-Master of the Hunt in the fifties and sixties first with his brother Gerald, who founded Bentley Wildfowl, and then with the Duchess of Cornwall’s father Major Bruce Shand, and supporter of countless charities and good causes.

OBITUARY Ian Askew

The Southdown & Eridge Hounds and Huntsman escorted their president Ian Askew on his final journey from the kennels through Ringmer to the Church, where he worshipped every Sunday. Some 800 people or more waited in the rain on the green or inside, to pay their own tribute to a man whose wisdom, charm, wit, knowledge, authority and passion for antiques, opera and hunting made him legions of friends. He died unexpectedly, just a month short of his 93rd birthday, but was in good form until the last moment, attending a hunt function and church just two days beforehand. At the South of England Hound Show new kennels for the hounds were opened by Mr.Askew’s niece Cleone Pengelley, a typically generous gift to hunting that will benefit hunts for many years to come. Friends had close experience of his impish humour, which led him to appear first as a vicar in the Hunt pantomime, and in subsequent years to don a pink tutu as part of the Ballet Rampant, and in the last two years of its 11 year run from 1975 –1986, he appeared in a long purple dress and bright red curly wig behind the wheel of a sedan chair, rolling to the front of the stage in the village hall at Ringmer, and enquiring of the audience: “Hasn’t this thing got any brakes?” Mr. Askew’s love of hunting, meant he never missed a meet, even rather bent on his feet in recent times, and friends heard of his courage under fire with the Rifle Brigade in Italy during the War only because of his gallantry award. When anything occurred within the Hunt, the cry always was: does Mr. Askew know? Has he been told? No detail escaped him. He will be so much missed, a man modest in stature but towering in personality. Words by julia longland and picture by Ginni Beard

Top10 Cross Country tips

Don’t panic about seeing a stride - if you have a good, positive canter, you’ll be in balance and can jump it out of a good stride.

6

By riding instructor Michaela Huntington

Last month we looked at getting the best from the three elements of horse trials events. Here, we focus in more depth on the cross-country element.

I

would like to share a few pointers on cross country schooling with readers; surely one of the most enjoyable parts of being a horse trials enthusiast. E.g. there’s no stress to Try and tackle tricky fences when XC schooling perform or win, you so at an event they do not pose a problem can take your time to develop your confidence, and can really work on your horse’s skills using fences that you are unlikely to have at home. Here are my top tips for getting the most from your cross country schooling:

1

Try and find a consistent, positive pace around the course – it can be fast or slow, according to your horse’s level of experience and schooling, but ideally needs to be consistent. Maintain impulsion and connection from leg to hand. Once you have established your ‘base’ speed, you can take your horse up or down the gears when required, for example slowing down on the approach to an upright. Many riders have what they call a ‘between fences gallop’.

2

A common mistake is to be too far forward in the saddle in between fences - the upright position is important in crosscountry riding, as it gives you more stability. Also, if you are ahead of the movement when you jump, e.g. if the horse cat leaps, you may lose stability or risk a fall.

3

Start to alter your ‘between fences gallop’ at least ten strides from a fence, so you can establish a positive canter, suitable for the fence in question, and achieve the best rhythm.

Riding over an XC course is surely one of the most enjoyable parts of being a horse trials enthusiast

Even if you have a very reliable horse, don’t completely trust the horse to jump the fence – it is correct and advisable to be positive, but a ‘gung ho’ approach leads to sloppiness. Make sure you are still asking the right questions and giving the right cues, rather than just ‘pointing and going’. It is common to see riders ‘giving up’ at the point of take off, rather than committing to the jump.

7

For water jumps and ditches, sit up. Exaggerate your ‘safety position’ on your approach, particularly with an inexperienced horse – e.g. elevate your shoulders and make sure the weight is down into your heels.

8

Don’t back off a ‘scary’ water complex - approach from a positive, forward-going stride. Don’t rush in all guns blazing however, as this may cause the horse to stumble once they are in the complex, as the water naturally slows them down.

9 10

You may need to slip the reins if you are jumping down into water, but don’t slip them so far that you can’t steer.

Take an RS-tor riding safety aid – you can hold it at the same time as slipping the reins through your hand, e.g. when jumping down a drop. Many riders without RS-tors may struggle to stay in balance in this scenario, as they take up the reins (which may be slippery) and try to establish their position, especially on a forward-going horse. If the horse stumbles while the rider is imbalanced, the rider may fall. However, the RS-tor allows the rider to stay in the saddle safely. It is perfect for riders with young, inexperienced, strong or excitable horses, and for boosting rider confidence. (Visit www.rstor.co.uk for info.)

Available on Libby’s International’s stand - Longines International, from 30/7/14

4

Maintain straightness at all times on your approach – the horse’s shoulder must stay behind his head – if not, he could run out. Maintain your leg aids.

Experienced riders find a consistent, positive pace around the course JULY 2014 Localrider 11

Years of Service to The Pony Club T

he Pony Club held their annual Cubitt Awards ceremony at Stratford Manor, Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire on Monday 2nd June. The annual awards are held in honour of volunteers who have given in excess of 20 years to The Pony Club, and take their name from the late Hon Guy Cubitt, who was Chairman of The Pony Club for 25 years and President from 1970 – 1979. 65 awardees were nominated for 2014, proving their incredible worth to The Pony Club with over 1300 years of combined voluntary service between them. Here we feature those recipients from Area 11 and Area 13.

John Buswell – Mid Surrey

John was a member of the committee from 1989 to 1997 and during that time and since has always been at the end of the telephone to help whenever requested. He has worked on so many working parties preparing for events and when he retired he spent time at the Pony Club field painting the entire stock of show jumps. He continues to Start/Finish/Time keep at the Hunter Trials and One Day events. Sitting out in the open whatever the weather and for however long, keeping everyone amused with his sharp wit. He always has an encouraging word for all competitors.

Pip Buswell – Mid Surrey

Pip has been a valued supporter of Mid Surrey Branch for 25 years. She has helped train members in Road Safety since 1993. Other roles include judging show jumping, doing tack checks, as well as looking after the jump judges and stewards. She supports the fund raising campaign by serving on the Task Force dedicated to the purchase of the Pony Club field. Pip continues to fund raise by organising an annual Dog Show, as well as making jolly jars for the branch stall at the Walton on the Hill May Pageant.

Liz Stewart – Mid Surrey

Liz has trained the Mid Surrey members on Road Safety for the last 22 years. Every year she gives her time to this as she firmly believes that the safety of riders and horses on the road is paramount. Every member receives six hours of training for free. The Mid Surrey is a large branch and this has sometimes meant up to 25 members per year, receiving training. Liz has helped with numerous tasks including organising shows and events. She is also a great supporter of Tetrathlon.

Sarah Waller – West Kent Hunt (Meopham)

Sarah has been a committee member for 25 years. She is camp organiser for the Minis, Juniors and Seniors, as well as organising the branch’s two day rally for the more advanced members.

Kay Jenman – West Kent Hunt (Meopham)

Kay is a committee member and is currently the Branch Chief Instructor. Having passed her A test Kay now organises the B & A tests as well as branch one-day-events. As Chief Instructor Kay plans the rally programme and instruction.

Right: Liz Stewart, Sarah Waller and Kay Jenman

Brenda Mossop – Goodwood

Brenda began as a helper as soon as her daughter Hayley became a member of the Goodwood branch and she has never stopped since. Brenda has also spent 17 years as Assistant DC to the last five DCs and only stood down three years ago. She still does the drinks run during camp week. Whatever we give Brenda it will never be enough, as this branch owes her so much.

Maggie Mockett – Cowdray Hunt

Maggie is rally helper and general background support. She was Cowdray’s first Membership Secretary and has held the position of Branch Secretary, Horse Trial Organiser including Area competitions and Southern Novice Championships. Maggie was the DC from 2005 to 2011 and although retired still helps show judging, stewarding, tack checking, dressage writing, fence judging, turn out judging and the list goes on.

Kim Clinch – Cowdray Hunt

Kim has volunteered for Cowdray Hunt since the age of 23. Her roles within the branch have included, Mounted Games Trainer and organiser, Discipline manager for Stephany Hogarth-Smith, Maggie Show Jumping, trainer for the BHS Mockett, Kim Clinch and Jane Adams Riding and Road Safety, Tetrathlon Training for shooting, swimming and running, Tetrathlon and Tri show organiser including area events, organiser of dressage training, senior camp mum and quiz organiser for many years. She has run rallies and shows and helped with parking and car boot sales. Kim is an experienced first aider and child protection officer. She is a confidential ear to parents and committee in her role as a Police Officer.

Stephany Hogarth-Smith – Cowdray Hunt

Stephany is the wife of Tony, who was DC of Cowdray for several years. She ran senior camp for eight years and along with other support roles is responsible for Health and Safety, DBS and child protection.

Jane Adams – Cowdray Hunt

Jane’s roles within the Cowdray Branch have included, Branch secretary, Membership Secretary, Assistant DC, responsible for first aid, Tetrathlon discipline manager, show helper and booking organiser and mounted games organiser. Jane has also been Area 13 Tetrathlon Committee Secretary as well as offering her time to help fence judge, steward and tack check at many events.

Sarah Curtis – Vine Hunt

Sarah started her Pony club career as a member of the Southdown Pony club where her mother was Secretary. Sarah is a staunch supporter of the Vine Pony club. Although her children are now grown up, she continues to help at events by sorting out much of the health and safety paperwork, informing the authorities that a show is taking place and making sure that essential safety information is to hand. When it is ‘all hands on deck’ in the run up to an event, the branch can be confident that Sarah will fulfil her role in the quiet and efficient manner which epitomises her. In 1982, Sarah’s daughters joined the Vine Hunt Pony club. With four daughters, there was then at least one member of the curtis family in the Vine until almost the end of the century. Sarah values the thorough grounding that the Pony club gave her children in horses and horsemanship. They can all ride proficiently and, perhaps most importantly, they all know how to look after a horse properly. Sarah then followed her mother’s lead by taking on the role of Secretary in 1998 when john and Penny Hankinson were Dcs. She remained as Secretary when Penny Stewart and jennifer beale took over as Dcs and enjoyed helping with camps and the organisation of events. It was when Maggie Richardson (current branch President) took over as Dc that Sarah joined an events committee and took on the task of organising the emergency services side of things. She continues to help at Sarah Curtis of the Vine Hunt Branch events for the Vine.

Crawley and Horsham Hunt South qualify for the Zones Crawley and Horsham Hunt South Pony Club had reason to celebrate after the Mounted Games Team came second in The Area 13 Competition held at Hindhead, Surrey on 18th May. For the last seven years the branch has had success with both Junior and Senior Mounted Games Teams qualifying for the Zone Competitions, so this year, with a change in team members, the pressure was on with only the first two teams earning a place at the Zones to take place in Warwickshire on 28th – 29th June.

The day started well with the team coming third in Tack and Turnout. At one point during the competition the branch was equal-first with Staff College, but they just couldn’t hold on to the lead, finishing in second place. The team of Lucy Massie (15), Courtney Fellows (14), Millie Whitchurch (14), Issy Rodda (14) and Jenny Edwards (10) have worked very hard training twice a week in Arundel Park and will now double their efforts for the next five weeks, practicing seven new games , hoping to get placed in the first seven at the Zones, which will secure them a place at the Pony Club Championships taking place at Cheshire in August. The girls are very excited, but could not have achieved this without the hard work and dedication of their team trainer Paul Armitage. Eric and Ernie aged four months

Last year we featured Caroline Richardson’s wonderful twin foals, Eric and Ernie. Their chestnut coats have turned roan and they have certainly grown, but other than that they are as adorable and inseperable as when they were born. We couldn’t resist sharing a few more pictures Words by Fiona Rafferty and pictures by Nigel Goddard

C

aroline Richardson is an amateur breeder, breeding one or two foals each year in the hope that they will go on to be evented by Sacha Hourigan (nee Pemble), who competes her horses. Sacha rode Eric & Ernie’s dam, Hyanie D’Aubrie aka Annie, until she retired in 2010. The combination had a very successful season in 2008, competing in seven three star competitions. They were second at Barocca, ninth at Belton Park and were short-listed for the 2008 Irish Olympic Team. By John Bunyon’s Grade A show jumping stallion, Zenturio, Eric and Ernie were a complete surprise when they arrived on 30th May, as only one foal had shown up on the scan. On reflection Caroline said that Annie had looked the size of a house, just before she foaled. The foals were smaller than a normal foal, but both were born healthy and quickly started growing, gaining all their nutrition from their dam. They immediately decided that Annie’s milk was far tastier than anything out of a bottle. Ernie was born two inches shorter than Eric and by age six weeks, he was just an inch shorter than his brother, who then measured 42”. Caroline said last time she measured them Eric was about 14.1hh and Ernie measured just under 14hh, but as you can see from the pictures Eric is a slightly bigger build all-round.

Best Buddies Eric and Ernie really are best buddies, pretty much doing everything together. Caroline said: “They are exceptionally sweet foals and they have inherited their mother’s amazing temperament. They do everything together, if one lies down, the other one lies down. Ernie is the cheekier of the two, but they both love getting up to mischief.” They have a very particular routine when it comes to feed time, as Eric has to have his food in the green manger and Ernie out of the white one. They were gelded in February and Caroline said they are both very sweet and don’t have any coltish tendencies. For now they live on their own with access to a barn and a field, but will be introduced to other youngsters, in the hope that they can be separated in the future without causing them to be upset.

The future Eric and Ernie will go to Sacha to be long-reined when they are three, returning to her to be fully started when they are four. Sacha is very excited about competing the twins and would love to qualify them for Badminton in the same year. We look forward to following Eric and Ernie’s progress over the coming years.

Q&A

The Airowear Hickstead Body Protector

Millie Allen pictured jumping in her Airowear Hickstead Body Protector

The first body protector of its kind to be launched for showjumpers, the Airowear Hickstead body protector won an innovation award at the British Equestrian Trade Association for being “almost invisible over a show jacket”. Here we chat to Airowear’s Sales & Marketing Manager, Chrissie Beatty to find out what makes this body protector so different... What is so special about the Airowear Hickstead Body Protector? The Airowear Hickstead body protector is the first of its kind to be launched for showjumpers. Its design makes the body protector “almost invisible over a show jacket” to give riders the confidence that they are being protected in the show ring without compromising on their appearance.

What level of safety does the Airowear Hickstead Body Protector conform to? The Airowear Hickstead body protector conforms to the highest level of safety; BETA 2009 Level 3. It has been designed to protect the rider against injury to ribs, internal organs and soft tissue injuries as a result of a fall, whist being lightweight and flexible to prevent any distraction for the rider.

What technical features does the Airowear Hickstead Body Protector have? The Airowear Hickstead body protector is the most technologically advanced body protector from the Airowear range. For superior shock absorption, it incorporates a new foam construction which is 400g lighter than a conventional body protector and is incomparably the most flexible body protector to date. The shock absorbing foam construction uses multiple layers of soft PVC nitrile foam to curve around the body whilst simultaneously moulding to the rider’s shape. This offers constant protection for the rider around their torso, ensuring 18 Localrider JULY 2014

18-19-Q&A-lrjuly14.indd 1

they remain protected in accordance with the rider’s natural movement.

Which famous riders wear the Airowear Hickstead Body Protector?

What style features does the Airowear Hickstead Body Protector have?

The most famous rider sporting the Airowear Hickstead Body Protector is Millie Allen.

In keeping with the latest style lines of this season’s show jackets, the Hickstead is tailored to discreetly blend in with the appearance of show jacket, resulting in a sophisticated appearance, whilst simultaneously encouraging airflow for the rider. Strategically placed mesh panels are darted over the bust to accentuate the female shape whilst mesh panelling under the arms and on the back panel combined with perforated shock absorbing foam, provide a release for moisture, helping to keep the rider fresh during use.

What sizes are available in the Airowear Hickstead Body Protector? To ensure female riders of any shape or size can look their best in the show ring, the Hickstead is available in a vast range of sizes to fit from teen, petite and plus-sized riders ‘off the shelf’. The Hickstead has a hidden fitting mechanism that pulls the safety vest into the small of the back to accentuate the natural curve of the spine. The separate chest and waist fastenings have been designed so it can be adjusted to fit each individual body shape. The darted bust and tapered waist, combined with super-soft flexibility and Airowear’s new mouldable technology makes the Hickstead the number one body protector for safety in the show ring.

Where can one buy the Airowear Hickstead Body Protector? The Airowear Hickstead Body Protector is now available to buy from all good retailers and the specialist team for body protector fitting will be at both the Hickstead Derby and Royal International. The design of the Hickstead is ideal for riders looking to wear a safety vest whilst in the show ring or whilst out hunting without affecting their overall appearance. It conforms to the highest level of safety EN13158:2009 and BETA 3009 Level 3. All labelling has been concealed to maintain a discreet appearance for the rider. RRP: £155 (Teen Sizes) / £195 (Women’s Sizes) For more information visit www.airowear.com

FEATURE

More than a load of hot air!

You may well have heard about air flocking, but do you really understand the benefits? David Kempsell of WOW Saddles tells us more about the innovative Flair Air Flocking System… See Flair in action

Innovation

Traditional wool flocking materials become unevenly compacted over time, which is why it is important for owners of flocked saddles to have them checked regularly. The Flair air flocking system creates a gaseous, flexible layer in the saddle. This removes pressure points and increases the sensitivity of the horse to the rider’s lower back aids, whilst also providing shock absorption for the horse when jumping or engaged in sitting trot. Flair has been independently pressure tested by a Master Saddler with almost three decades’ experience. The pressure testing results, which can be downloaded from www.flair.uk.com, show the comparison of the same rider, newly-flocked saddle and horse, before and after conversion to Flair from wool flocking. The results consistently showed that the Flair saddle demonstrated a lower average pressure on the back, and that a greater surface area was in contact with the horse’s back. A recent study carried out at Dundee University showed that Flair reduced the pressure by 26% when compared to wool flocking. During dynamic movement, such as jumping, substantially higher ‘loads’ of pressure occur; the results showed that with the air-flocked saddle, the amount of the time it took for the pressure to reduce behind the horse’s shoulder was reduced; and a faster recovery time means a more comfortable get-away for the horse after the fence.

WOW Saddles will be exhibiting at The Royal International Horse Show, Hickstead, where you can come and see Flair Air Flocking for yourself. Come and sit in a WOW Saddle and talk to the team to find out how you could improve your horse’s comfort, attitude to work and way of going.

Putting the pressure on

One fairly new development within equine biomechanics is pressure testing. This measures the dynamic pressure distribution between the saddle and the horse, and quantitatively assesses the commands of the rider and the subsequent reaction of the horse. The technique of the rider can also be objectively assessed, while harmful pressure points that arise from poor saddle fit can be recognised and corrected. Gait asymmetry of the horse, possibly associated with physiological back problems or poor saddle fit, can simply be assessed. Using specially designed technology WOW Saddles can measure the dynamic pressure distribution between the saddle and the horse using a thin elastic sensor mat. This can identify how the rider sits, how the saddle fits and what the horse feels. More information is available from the WOW team by calling 01227 831614 or visit www.wowsaddles.com. Gear

Feeling the urge to buy something new for you or your horse? For this issue we have been testing a range of products which aim to keep both you and your horse cool through the hot competition season. Plus we also look at competition boots for horses.

Horseware Ice-Vibe Boots Ice-Vibe boots are rechargeable vibrating boots that boost circulation in horses’ legs, combining the effects of cooling and massage. The boots can be used with and without cold packs to reduce swelling and stimulate blood flow. Cooling slows down blood flow to prevent swelling, while the massage effect encourages lymph to move, draining inflammation and stimulating repair to damaged tissue. The vibration mimics the effect of a horse walking quietly in the field, making them perfect for horses on box rest. Using the boots before exercise can help reduce the risk of injury as increasing blood flow to the tendons and ligaments makes them more elastic. Everyday wear and tear on joints can be managed with daily use of the boots, and rehabilitation through injury can be achieved more quickly. With each pair of boots comes a pair of cold packs, batteries and charger. They’re available in full and extra-full size, and in hock and knee boot also. Spare batteries, chargers and cold packs can be bought separately. RRP: £175 - £195 To find out more and to find your nearest stockist visit www.ice-vibe. com. www.horseware.com LR Comment: I found these boots quick and simple to use, all one needs to remember is freeze the ice packs each night. I was very impressed by the strength of the vibration, which I could feel it right up into the shoulder area when the boots were on the front legs. They certainly seemed to have a relaxing effect on my horse as after a few minutes she would drop her head and on most occasions fall asleep.

Mountain Horse Jasmine Singlet Whether teamed with denim jeans or smart, tailored breeches, this simple, sleeveless polo strikes all the right summery notes. It has a stand-out contrast collar, gold snap buttons and classic placket trim. Made from stretch cotton/spandex blend. Colours: Heather Blue, Monaco Blue Sizes: X Small to XX Large RRP: £39.95 www.mountainhorse.co.uk LR Comment: This is a perfect addition to a summer wardrobe and can be worn casually as well as when riding. The fabric is lovely and soft and the spandex blend allows it to move freely while riding.

John Whitaker Tendon and Fetlock Set The Tendon and Fetlock Set is designed with shock absorbing impact protection against the flexor tendons and ligaments, ideal for jumping. These high quality and hard wearing boots are designed to aid comfort and protection in the most demanding conditions. The set contains two tendon boots and two fetlock boots. Features include fully adjustable belt closure system with elastics, a snug fit to protect the horse’s joints, PU pads with neoprene inner lining and JW diamond badge. Colours: Black, Brown Sizes: Cob, Full RRP: £70.00 www.johnwhitaker.com LR Comment: The John Whitaker Tendon and Fetlock boots are very appealing to the eye, but most importantly they fit well and do not move, so offer maximum protection to my horse’s legs at all times.

Kozi Kidz Vind Fleece Combining outstanding mobility with expert weather protection, the Vind Fleece is the perfect companion for spring/summer hacks. Designed to offer 100% protection from cold winds, the new fleece has an advanced 3 layer construction with a technical, ergonomic fit for maximum comfort and performance. Made from a soft and lightweight stretch polyester fabric, the Vind Fleece provides warmth without restricting your child’s freedom of movement. Its bonded membrane helps keep cold winds at bay and also offers water-resistance, providing increased practicality in unexpected rain showers. Colours: Orange, Berry,Nautical Blue RRP: £39.00 Children’s sizes: 74cm – 130cm www.kozikidz.com LR Comment: My six-year-old daughter loves the colour of the fleece, and I love the reflective stripes on the arms and spots on the back. It is worn as a fleece, but I know that it is windproof, and will keep her warmer than just a fleece. Her favourite part of the jacket is the thumb loops. She can do the zip up on her own, which gives her independence. This jacket is used both at school and at the stables. And with the large name tag, I am happy that it will come back with her at the end of the day.

Amlin plus puts up record £7,000 prize money pool for CIC2* Class at Brightling Park Horse Trials

BRIGHTLING PARK INTERNATIONAL amlinplus HORSE TRIALS

I

n response to recent debate about the woeful prize money on offer in eventing, equine insurance specialist Amlin Plus has put up in excess of £7,000 with £2,500 going to the winner of the CIC2* class at this year’s Brightling Park International Horse Trials. Last year’s winner, New Zealander Lizzie Brown, went home with just £500 and 500kg of Reverdy Horsefeed. The hugely popular event in East Sussex, which will be held on Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 July 2014, regularly attracts more than 400 entries from all over the world, including renowned Olympians Mark Todd, Pippa Funnell, Tina Cook and Zara Phillips. David Ashby, Managing Director of Amlin Plus, commented that this event now offers some of the best prize money in the country: “The lack of prize money in eventing is something that has caused much comment. Having event horses myself, and speaking regularly with riders and owners, I think it is near impossible for a professional rider to actually make a reasonable living in the sport nowadays, other than through horse dealing. Hopefully this sponsorship will ensure a good number of starters, and that the winner will feel their efforts have been rewarded properly.” International event rider Mark Todd has been particularly vocal on this subject recently. He added: “It is brilliant news that Amlin Plus has got involved in the sport to put up decent money for the CIC2* class. It is hard to get sponsorship at the moment so great effort from Brightling Park to secure this support and I am sure riders will support the class.”

6 training aids feature

1 The Harbridge

The Harbridge has proved invaluable for all disciplines and abilities, since it aims to imitate the perfect pair of rider’s hands. The Harbridge encourages horses at any standard to work with classical lines, and also helps to encourages lightness and self carriage. The product is said to help improve the paces and afford greater engagement and control, and may be used for trotting poles, grid work and small fences, since it enhances bascule without any interference to the mouth. The Saddlery Shop stocks Harbridges from manufacturers Shires and Kincade, from £13.49.

2 Draw reins

Draw reins (or running reins) are used under saddle to help the horse learn to maintain a light contact with the bit, while freely moving forward and ‘carrying himself’. Dressage trainer Dane Rawlins has said that correctly used draw reins can be a beneficial schooling aid. “They can be a very good influence for a horse that is unsettled in the mouth. I only ever use them with an ordinary snaffle bit and would emphasise that it is vital they are used properly,” he has stated. Draw reins may also be used for schooling over fences; those with an elastic insert that allow the horse more room over a fence are popular. The Saddlery Shop stocks leather draw reins from £5.99.

that could benefit your horse By Lucy Nicholas of The Saddlery Shop

There are many products available that may be used to aid the equine training process; we showcase some of the most popular

3 Market Harborough

The Market Harborough is designed to help stop the horse lifting its head above a set level. It is similar to a martingale, but has a stronger action, as the leverage is on the bit; the Market Harborough is popular with showjumpers and features multiple D rings on the reins, with trigger clip attachments. The Saddlery Shop stocks the Hy Market Harborough for £24.99.

4 Chambon

The Chambon, used solely for lungeing, encourages the horse to work in self carriage, in a long and low outline; its lines attach to the bit, and run up the cheekpieces, through loops on a poll headpiece. However, it has no effect on the hindquarters, and creates poll leverage, so must be used with care. The Saddlery Shop stocks the JHL Chambon for £12.99.

Always seek expert advice when using training aids

If you want your horse to maintain a light bit contact while ‘carrying himself’, then maybe training aids could help

Take care... All of the training aids mentioned here should be used carefully and skilfully. If you are in any doubt about whether your horse could benefit, or need help using and introducing them, seek expert advice.

5 The De Gogue

The De Gogue training aid features straps that run from the girth to the headpiece of the bridle, to the bit, and back to the girth again. It aims to address resistance in the poll, mouth and base of the neck, and is said to free the shoulders and encourage muscled top line development. Showjumper David McPherson has advocated careful use of the De Gogue, saying it can help produce a good shape when the horse is working on the flat, with the back rounded, and the hocks engaged. The De Gogue can be used for both lungeing and for ridden work, but should be gradually introduced by an experienced rider, making sure the horse is correctly warmed up first. The Saddlery Shop stocks the JHL De Gogue for £17.63.

6 The Pessoa

The Pessoa aims to help strengthen the horse’s back, stretch the top line and gently encourage the horse to work correctly. It utilises the holistic philosophies of the great Nelson Pessoa, and importantly, does not create a rigidly fixed contact between the horse’s mouth and girth. Designed to be used while lunging, the Pessoa employs a sympathetic system of ropes and pulleys that can be formatted differently by the The Shires Lunging Aid handler to give different levels of adjustment. The Saddlery Shop stocks the Genuine Pessoa for £104.99, as well as the Shires Lunging Aid, developed in the style of a Pessoa, and costing a budgetfriendly £39.99. july 2014 Localrider 49

P

olo is becoming more widely available to every-day riders, with group polo lessons including a hired pony being offered in the South East by clubs such as Sussex Polo, Epsom Polo Academy, All England Polo Club at Hickstead and FHM West Sussex Polo club, to name but a few. Lessons typically range from between £50-£100 per session, dependent on whether engaging in a group session, or looking for one-to-one tuition. You don’t need to be an experienced rider to try your hand at Polo - why not give it a try?

Learning the ropes

Generally in your first lesson you will learn the fundamentals of hitting the ball, basic rules and how to control your pony whilst co-ordinating the mallet. Most lessons involve trying to perfect the art of hitting the ball from a crate to start with, before you get in the saddle and feel how responsive a polo pony really is! By the end of your first lesson, you will usually have the opportunity to play a chukka.

The dynamic game of polo originated in Persia, but has since established itself across the globe - why not have a go, or cheer on the ladies at the forthcoming Women’s National Tournament at Ascot Park Polo Club? Most lessons initially involve hitting the ball from a crate

Spectating

If you don’t fancy having a go yourself but would like to get involved by watching some polo, living in the South East is the best place for it, with world class tournaments at Guards Polo Club in Windsor on grass, International test match arena polo at Hickstead, or the gorgeous and friendly Knepp Castle Polo Club, showing low goal matches. Why not visit the 26th Women’s National Tournament on the 5th and 6th July? Held at Ascot Park Polo Club, the home of the International Women’s Polo Association (IWPA), this event celebrates women’s polo. Gel Eze, the original gel-based saddle pads, are sponsoring a team this year, the Gel Eze Babes. Ascot Park Polo Club is run by Victoria Grace, one of the UK’s top women players. She reports that 50% of students learning polo are women, while 35% of the total playing membership of Ascot Park Polo Club are female - so why not go and cheer the team on?

All the gear You may notice that the tack and equipment used in Polo differs to other disciplines. Polo is a fast and furious game, with a lot of stopping, turning and pressure on the pony’s legs, so adequate protection is important. Polo players often apply both soft fleece bandages and supportive tendon boots in order to maximise safety. World Wide Tack offers many different coloured polo bandages.

Bombers Bits are fast becoming the go-to bits for polo players because of the gentle control they offer. World Wide Tack is an exclusive distributor for Bombers Bits in the UK (for all riding disciplines), offering off-the-peg and bespoke bit creation, allowing players to choose the mouth and cheek piece sizes specifically. FEED NEWS

Summer Feeding

During the summer months some horses and ponies can lead a much more active life with a diary full of events, competitions and even a week at camp. It is important to adjust your horse’s diet as and when necessary to ensure he is receiving all the necessary vitamins and minerals. If you are feeling unsure all the companies featured are able to give advice on how to feed your horse this summer.

Mollichaff Calmer Mollichaff Calmer contains a balanced blend of fibre pellets, oat straw, dried grass, herbs, soya oil, vitamins, minerals, limestone and trace elements, and it can be used as the sole concentrate feed when fed at the recommended levels. It is suitable for all horses and ponies, as it is low in sugar and starch providing limited controlled energy from high quality, digestible fibre and oilbased ingredients. Mollichaff Calmer includes elevated levels of magnesium along with a carefully formulated combination of camomile, lemon balm and mint. It also contains Vitamins B1 and B12 which are known to help decrease anxiety by exerting a calming influence on the horse. www.horsehage.co.uk

Speedi-Beet Speedi-Beet from British Horse Feeds is a unique sugar beet feed soaked and ready to use in under ten minutes. Extremely palatable, it is high in fibre and unmolassed making it 95% sugar free. Speedi-Beet provides rapid rehydration for performance horses whilst optimising energy release rate. This is due to the soluble fibre in Speedi-Beet, which has a high water holding capacity increasing the amount of fluid in the horse’s hindgut. This reservoir can then be drawn upon during prolonged exercise to help replace water lost through sweating. Adding small amounts of Speedi-Beet to water may also encourage difficult horses to drink during events. www.britishhorsefeeds.com

Easy Pack Timothy Haylage Easy Pack Timothy Haylage is low in sugar and starch but high in fibre and taste, ideal for horses and ponies on a weight management programme. Easy Pack Rye Haylage provides medium protein and high energy levels for horses in competition. Specially selected Italian Rye grasses have been cultivated to produce a haylage high in fibre and a good source of energy. Easy Pack even has the answer for those horses in between leisure, riding club or veteran horses, which need a little shine, but not too much, with Easy Pack Meadow Haylage. www.easypackhaylage.com

Baileys Aqua-Aide Baileys Aqua-Aide electrolyte provides a balance of key salts which mirrors those lost in sweat and includes an optimum balance of sodium, potassium and chloride as well as magnesium and calcium. It also contains just the right amount of dextrose to aid palatability and encourage optimum absorption from the digestive tract. Aqua-Aide can be easily administered in water or wet feed whenever a horse sweats in training or competition. www.baileyshorsefeeds.co.uk

HAYGAIN Hay Steamer Steaming, provided it is done properly, is equally effective as soaking at reducing respirable particle concentrations. Furthermore, steaming has other advantages over soaking: • Steaming does not leach valuable minerals and electrolytes. • Steaming actually kills 99% of the mould and bacteria present in hay • Unlike soaking no biologically hazardous effluent is produced from steaming Steamed hay remains fresh (low dust, bacteria and mould) for several days so a completely strung bale can be steamed and fed gradually as and when the horse comes into the stable. www.propressequine.com

Equine America Apple Lytes Feed Apple Lytes Granules daily to horses or ponies in hard work, especially those who are sweating. As horses work and sweat they lose vital electrolytes and mineral salts. Without electrolytes, the horse will feel lethargic, and a continuation of this loss is highly detrimental to the horse’s health. Apple Lytes is a salt-based product, which can be added to the feed on a daily basis. For high level competition and endurance events, Apple Lytes is also available in a handy syringe for instant replenishment of electrolytes. Electrolytes should not be fed to a dehydrated horse, always ensure water has been ingested first, and that the horse has recovered from exercise. www.equine-america.co.uk

Blue Chip Joint RLF Joint problems can often occur from excessive activity on hard ground; this can lead to the production of poor quality synovial (joint) fluid. The joint relies on this fluid for lubrication and protection from wear and tear ensuring the longevity of the limb. Blue Chip Joint RLF can help maintain the viscosity of synovial fluid. Blue Chip Joint RLF contains Glucosamine, MSM, Hyaluronic acid, Yucca and Manganese, as well as a rosehip extract, Rosa canina (more commonly known as the Dog rose). This specific extract of rosehip has been shown in published scientific studies to be a powerful natural nutraceutical. Rosa canina contains a special glycoside that helps maintain joint comfort by limiting the number of white blood cells allowed into the joint. www.bluechipfeed.com

Also a popular choice for stabled horses and those with compromised immunity. Recommended and used by leading veterinary practices, Protexin Gut Balancer is ideal for, general wellbeing, improving digestibility, horses prone to losing condition, during periods of stress (e.g. travel, competition) or during periods of antibiotic usage. www.equinepremium.com LR Comment: After just a few weeks of feeding Protexin Gut Balancer there seemed to be a noticeable difference to my horse’s well being and overall condition. He also seemed to have more energy.

om Jackson from Ashford in Kent, rode Waltham Fiddlers Find to win the Under 25 CCI3* at EquiTrek Bramham Horse Trials in Yorkshire at the beginning of June. The talented 11-year-old is owned by Tom’s parents and Tom has successfully produced him from BE90 over the last five seasons. The combination were part of the Gold medal winning Junior British team in 2011 and Tom won team Silver at the Young Rider European Championships last year. Waltham Fiddlers Find has been very consistent throughout his career, regularly featuring in the placings as he climbed up the levels. Earlier this year the combination finished third in the OIu21 at Belton and had a good run at Burnham Market Tom Jackson and Waltham in the CIC3*, which set them up Fiddlers Find, Under 25 CCI3* for firstClub CCI3* winners at Bramham Horse Trials The Lord Leconfield Branch oftheir The Pony are at Bramham. Lord Leconfield Pony Club Fundraising Event Pony Club activities such as rallies and camp are generally quite heavily subsidised and in order to maintain these subsidies the branches need to raise money. For the last few years the Lord Leconfield branch as received a donation from the John Laing Charitable Trust. This year the entrepreneurial committee have decided to invest the donation, in order to generate more funds. They have used the money to organise and Eventing Demonstration at Merrist Wood College with William Fox-Pitt on Wednesday 24th September. William only occasionally takes part in lecture-demonstrations and from past experience they have been extremely amusing and educational. The event will also be celebrating the 85th Anniversary of the Pony Club. Yogi Breisner, Eventing Chef d’Equipe, commented on the selection: “As always it’s a very exciting time once the squad has been selected for a Championships. The main aim this year is Olympic qualification, whilst being as competitive as possible – I think we have the right squad to achieve that.” Tina Cook said: “I am thrilled to be selected, especially on a home-bred horse, who I think is a superstar. I’m very excited for the future for him and I’m so thrilled for Jim Chromiak, who’s been a long term and loyal owner of mine for over twenty years. WEG this time around [commenting about Kentucky, 2010] will be hugely easier in terms of logistics as there’s no flight involved but this doesn’t take away from the prestige of a World Champs – where you are competing up against the best in world. De Novo News is so adaptable, he’s a big horse and has scope. It’s his first Championships so who knows, but he has done three four stars now, with a ninth place at Burghley. He didn’t start eventing until he was six, so to have done what he has done by the age of 11 is amazing and shows what a very talented horse he is, I’m very excited to see how he’ll go.”

Carl Hester MBE helps launch new range of saddles M

embers of the press and saddlers from across the country were invited to Carl Hester’s yard for the launch of the GFS PDS range of saddles. During the morning’s demonstration Carl taught his stable-riders on different horses in combination of the four saddles in the new range. At the end of 2013, Carl Hester was introduced to Geoff Fieldhouse and his top saddle fitter Helen Stone. Carl tasked the pair with fitting some of his more difficult horses and was hugely impressed with the outcome. Geoff Fieldhouse had been developing a new range of modern, close contact dressage saddles for a number of years, wanting to combine quality craftsmanship with modern technology. Carl’s fine tuning and ability to “feel” the difference in movement and balance enabled the team to add design details and enhance the saddle’s fit and performance. The new shapes of modern day sports horses were also thrown into the mix – as were the shapes and needs of the many other riders that Carl had sitting on these new saddles. Carl demands that his horses must be able to move freely and that nothing must impede their performance was at the heart of the development stage. The four styles of saddles are fully adjustable, feature a carbon fibre tree and unique foam and flocked panels for pressure distribution. For more information visit www.gfsriding.co.uk
