Plumpton College Annual Show Plumpton College, Ditchling Road, East Sussex Saturday 19th May 2018

P
lumpton College’s annual horse show is held on the field in front of the main college building providing a superb backdrop with the rolling hills of the South Downs rising on the other side. This warm and friendly show is organised by the Level 3 Extended Diploma students from Plumpton’s Equine Unit overseen by their tutor, who this year is Sarah Hollett. The show had a busy but relaxed atmosphere with lots to see and enjoy. The weather was perfect and the students were rewarded with a great turn out of horses and ponies of all shapes and sizes competing in show jumping, in-hand and ridden showing, working hunter, handy pony and gymkhana games. The show also provides a great opportunity for the students to compete the college horses and one such competitor was first year student Lois Carden, who won the Prettiest Mare class with the 15-year-old Shire horse, Hazel. In the Fairly Novice Show Jumping there was success for Hannah
Carmichael with her new pony, Amy. Hannah had only had 20-yearold Irish pony Amy for three weeks and this was the first show for this pairing, giving them a good start to their year. It was lovely to see Sarah Savill back in the saddle jumping after her serious accident, it was a long road to recovery, but she has got there with great determination and achieved a fantastic second place in the Scurry with Silver Spirit. A combination to watch for the future is 14-year-old Lily Shears with her new pony 10-year-old Section D, Harvey (Danyreglywis Playboy out of Gwynfaes Culwch). Harvey is a forward going pony with an amazing leg action and huge jump, he is a work in progress for Lily, but the pair have it all there and Lily is putting in the work to make it happen. Well done to the students and staff of Plumpton College for a well organised show and a beautifully dressed showground using trees and shrubs from the college’s horticultural unit.
