ane Townshend of the Classictop Stud in Sussex bred her first foal in 1996, twenty-two years later she is heading to the Horse of the Year Show for the Cuddy Supreme In-Hand Championship, with a homebred three-year-old, Classictop Up & At It. By the former event horse Up With The Lark Jane’s stunning bay is out of Beseeka Dawn Fox, a mare Jane loaned from Jenny Wormersley. Described by Jane as a quality mare who has a good temperament and is very trainable, Beseeka Dawn Fox scored the second highest mark ever with SHGB when she was graded. The Cuddy Supreme at HOYS is every breeder’s dream, but qualifying isn’t easy.
Always the winner
The Cuddy Championship class is one of the most nerve-racking to watch of any showing classes as all the In-Hand Champions of the day come together to be judged. Classictop Up & At It who had won both the Sport Horse Breeding Championship and the Light Horse Breeding Championship stood next to Welsh ponies, a Highland, a Dales, plus many more different breeds, heights and sizes. Having watched them all trot up individually, the Judge, Phillip Hilton, called forward his final six, before announcing the winners in reverse order, with the Reserve Championship going to Mrs Abel’s Welsh section A, Manorlea Maisie May. Phillip was never in any doubt, who the winner would be, saying: “He was my winner from when he first walked into the ring, he is a lovely horse.” There were cheers all round for Jane and her team as Classictop Up & At It walked forward, while his handler, Deborah Winchester, who has shown him since he was a foal hugged and kissed him, privately wiping away a tear. Consistent ever since he was a foal Classictop Up & At It is now for sale and we look forward to watching him produced under saddle, whether that is in the show ring or out eventing.

Well bred mare
The South of England has proved a successful local show for Jane, who two years ago qualified Raritat, a broodmare with foal at foot, for the Cuddy Supreme at HOYS, where she was pulled fourth. Shown at HOYS by Alex Kelly, Alex has since bought her 2013 foal, Classictop Rockette by Lauriston. The stunning mare who is in foal to Brief Encounter headed the Sport Horse Breeding Broodmare class. Alex is looking forward to the safe arrival of the foal next year, before hopefully bringing the mare out under saddle.
Off to HOYS

There were plenty more locals gaining their much coveted tickets to HOYS, including Chloe Lemieux and her new pony, Charlie Chan. Twelve-year-old Chloe had only had Charlie Chan for three weeks and was competing at their second ever show together, when she won the NPS 143cms Working Hunter Pony of the Year Qualifier. Also qualifying in the Working Hunter Pony classes was Georgia Darlington and Lisa’s Dream, who won the 153cms section and went on to stand Reserve Working Hunter Pony Champions. Horsham based Helen Baker is on a roll at present and having won the Open Ridden Hunter and stood Hunter Champion with Trudi Deja’s stunning grey, Mossy, on Thursday, she was back on Friday to ride Anna Stevens’ Pendley Muscadel. The five-year-old by Dolphin Superstar is known as Cheeky Charlie at home as he has a very “cheeky personality”. Anna bought him unseen as a yearling and he has been shown and produced by Helen since he was two. Building on a successful first season under saddle he won the Ridden Part bred Arab Class going on to stand Champion, before winning the Brereton Small Hack and receiving the golden ticket to the Horse of the Year Show.
