bi Sole’s 15-year-old Hero Worship lit up the arena from start to finish to claim the Tattersalls and RoR Thoroughbred Ridden Show Horse class. Abi will have owned Hero for ten years this November, rehomed him through the Darley/ Godolphin rehoming scheme. Hero had raced three times on the flat winning two and finishing second in the other before injury struck. Hero recovered from successful stem cell treatment, but the prognosis was that he would probably do the same injury again and as he was ‘such a nice person’ he was retired into the re-homing programme. Abi said it was a bit like “the blind leading the blind” when he first arrived, as she had no idea what she should be doing. Her sister Lizzie Drury, who had some experiences of ex-racehorses, tried to help, but Abi said she had only had unsuccessful racehorses, so Hero was a bit different. Hero spent a couple of months with Fred and Rowena Cook before coming home.

Future husband

It was a winning situation all-round when Abi met the stable jockey at the yard where she chose to keep Hero. She not only found a good jockey and all-round horseman in Jody Sole, but also her future husband.

Producing Hero is still very much a team effort and while Abi is busy working as Marketing Lead for a Pharmaceutical company during the week, Jody keeps Hero ticking over from his yard near Horsham. Abi has had her most successful year to date with Hero, winning at Suffolk, South of England and qualifying for the Horse of the Year Show in the SEIB Racehorse to Riding Horse class. Despite their success, which includes competing at Hickstead, Burghley, Aintree and now qualifying for HOYS, Abi still has plenty more she plans to do with Hero. The combination currently compete at Elementary level dressage and Abi would like to qualify for the Regionals in dressage to music and another goal is to start competing him in side saddle classes.

On Cob Form

One of the most successful producers at the show was Surrey-based Lynn Russell, who started her day winning the Novice Hunter with May Day Flyer. More success followed in the Cob classes where her yard under the dual jockeyship of Glen Gains won all the weight sections. It was the Heavyweight, Baileys Horse Feeds Starfall ridden by Lynn who stood Champion, with Gallifrey, the Lightweight winner, partnered by Glen in Reserve.

The stunning coloured Baileys Horse Feeds Cappa Sham took the Maxi Cob title before winning the Skewbald & Piebald Traditional and Native Ridden Horse class. He went on to stand Ridden Coloured Champion, with the Skewbald & Plaited Ridden Horse winner, Pferde Stud Cezanne ridden by Rebekah Young standing Reserve.

Strong turnout of natives

The Surrey County Show are strong supporters of the native classes and had a good turnout in both the in-hand and ridden sections with Mountain & Moorland Working Hunter classes too. The striking Welsh section D, Thorneyside The Contender owned by Mrs D Baker took the Mountain and Moorland In-hand Championship, with the winning Exmoor, Martine Harding’s Princess standing Reserve. In the Ridden classes the tri-colour went the way of Jane Weller and her versatile Welsh section D, Stoatleytwo Red Dragon. Rachel Surman-Bright stood Reserve with another Welsh section D, Morry Imari. It was a Connemara who claimed the Mountain & Moorland Working Hunter pony Championship with Lettergesh Bobby ridden by Katie Bettison taking the honours and Katherine McGrail with Millcroft Golden Lustre standing Reserve.
