or me Badminton always marks the start of the outdoor season. I know from now on there will be shows and events every weekend, with a few on days in between, until things move back indoors for HOYS in October. For us Badminton started with the Mitsubishi Motors Cup on the Wednesday. Of the 200 combinations taking part in the BE90 and BE100 Finals, nearly 40 were from the South East. It was great fun watching and cheering as they galloped by and we managed to snap most of them too. Turn to page 14 to read more. There was a brilliant finish to this year’s Badminton Horse Trials when Jonelle Price and Classic Moet jumped their first ever clear round in the show jumping at four star level to win. I first saw this combination four years ago at the World Equestrian Games in Caen, where they finished fourth, just outside the medals. I hoped then that they had a big result in them and whilst they have had top ten placings at Badminton and Burghley since, winning must be the icing on the cake for Jonelle, in a year that has seen her become a mother for the first time, to a son, Otis. You can see a picture of Otis and read more about Badminton Horse Trials on page 10. Just a few days after Badminton our attention moved to the Royal Windsor Horse Show. There was an enormous number of local combinations taking part and we were delighted to see so many bringing home the red ribbons and sashes too. Turn to page 20 to read all of the lovely stories about the Windsor winners. Later this month we will be heading to Hickstead for the The Al Shira’aa Hickstead Derby Meeting and once again we are lucky to be able to offer readers two free entry tickets for either Friday 22nd or Saturday 23rd June. SEIB’s Chief Executive Officer, Barry Fehler presents a cheque for £50,000 to the British Horse Society, which will be used to purchase a Healthcare on Tour vehicle to deliver critical equine welfare around the UK.

SEIB clients vote for the BHS to receive £50K to improve equine healthcare

EIB Insurance Brokers hosted their inaugural Charity Awards luncheon at the Grange City Hotel, London on the 23rd April. SEIB’s Chief Executive Officer, Barry Fehler presented a cheque for £50,000 and a commemorative plaque to Emma Day and Gemma Stanford of the British Horse Society (BHS). SEIB customers voted for the Healthcare on Tour project from the winning charity, the BHS, to be the recipient of this generous grant. Barry Fehler said: “I have been at the helm of SEIB for over 50 years and it is with great pride that we are able to make this grant of £50,000 to the BHS to help equine welfare across the UK.” Voting began in September 2017 when SEIB Giving was launched to decide which charity should be awarded the grant of £50,000. In its first year this initiative has proved to be very popular with SEIB clients who have had the chance to choose the winning charity who will benefit from this huge sum of money. Over 200 small to medium sized charities were nominated and over 2,000 votes were received, resulting in 12 charities being invited to submit detailed plans. Eight charities went through to the final stage when only SEIB customers could choose the good cause to win the grant of £50K and only one vote per client was allowed. The winner was announced at the SEIB awards ceremony and luncheon. SEIB ensured that no charity left empty handed and each of the other seven finalists received a donation. The British Horse Society plans to use the £50K grant to purchase a Healthcare on Tour vehicle to deliver critical equine welfare around the UK.

Barry Fehler announced that next year SEIB Insurance Brokers will give an incredible £100,000 to charity – thus doubling their charitable giving in just one year. SEIB while being an independent broker is owned by the Ecclesiastical Insurance Group that is in turn owned by the charity Allchurches Trust. Barry Fehler continued: “We are delighted that our customers have decided which of these very worthy causes should receive the grant. SEIB is so successful because we are totally customer focussed and this is another way that our clients can have their say. Each of the charities that reached the final judging had important projects that would really make a difference to the areas within which they operate and that was our aim when we set up this initiative.” Giving is embedded in the culture of SEIB. From supporting grass roots competition that gives opportunities to amateur riders that they could only otherwise dream about, right through to the company’s long-term commitment to the Animal Health Trust who are developing a vaccine for Grass Sickness. The SEIB team do a huge amount for local charities and SEIB has proudly supported the Burghley Sponsored Ride for the past fouryears by covering expenses so all proceeds go to charity Each of the final eight charities left the Awards with some remuneration. Runners up, the South Essex Wildlife Hospital received £1,000, and in third place, World Horse Welfare received a cheque for £900. The other finalists were, Welsh Pony Rescue and Rehoming, Demelza Hospice Care for Children, Fairly Beloved Rabbit Care, Riding for the Disabled and Redwings Horse Sanctuary.

Special 50th anniversary Commemorative Rosettes

here was sunshine and smiles all round as Hope in the Valley RDA group celebrated their 50th Birthday with a special guest at Plumpton College on Thursday 10th May. Riding for the Disabled’s President of 32 years, HRH the Princess Royal, arrived by helicopter to enjoy the group’s special day and spend time with some of the volunteers and young riders. Having met a host of local dignitaries on arrival (see below), Princess Anne joined riders, ponies, volunteers and parents in the arena for a demonstration of the Countryside Challenge, before presenting commemorative rosettes and long service awards to both the riders, ponies and volunteers. Of the day, the Princess Royal said: “It is a real achievement that we are celebrating today.” She went on to praise Hope in the Valley volunteers for their ‘supreme dedication’ and commented on the changes that have been seen over 50 years. She also praised the parents saying: “It’s a pleasure to see the parents here also showing a commitment that makes such a difference.” During the riding display, the Princess gave each of the four riders a letter which they had to post as part of the Countryside Challenge which follows a simulated course where the riders put their skills to the test by tackling obstacles and tasks they might find in the country. As well as posting a letter, these include going through a gate, crossing a ‘road’, entering a farmyard and picking an apple from a tree. Although great fun, this also tests their steering, balance and confidence. She then presented rosettes to the regular riders at the Hope in the Valley group as well as long services awards to two of the ponies, Rose who has worked with the group for 14 years and Toblerone, who has been there for 12 years. Margaret Fogg, a volunteer and Trustee, received a long service award for 35 years and a surprise award was given to the Group Chairman, Lesley Morrill, who had just completed 52 marathons in 52 weeks, promoting RDA along the way. On inviting, the Princess Royal to present a trophy to Lesley, Lindsay Correa, RDA Regional Chair, said: “Today we’ve celebrated long service in both ponies and people. But a marathon is also long; very long and we have the pleasure of presenting a special award, where we recognise an individual who has chosen to do a lot more than just one.” The golden visit ended with the Princess cutting and sharing in a very special cake that had been made by volunteer, Jenny Brown, before meeting the regular volunteers at the group. re you suitably dressed for the show ring this season? In this feature, MD & Designer for British equestrian fashion brand, Equetech, Liz Hayman gives readers some winning advice. Wearing the right clothing for the show ring will ensure you look professional and give the correct first impressions to the judges, but this doesn’t mean that you have to rush out and buy a whole new outfit. At lower levels, judges tend to be more lenient on correct dress codes, so whereby a tweed jacket is traditionally correct, a smart black or navy competition jacket will equally suffice. A pair of cream or canary breeches are the norm for the show ring, but if you only have white, then again at the more novice level shows, this will be acceptable. Brown gloves are favoured, but still black is acceptable. One change we can all make easily, is to wear a shirt and tie which is correct for showing (unless you are riding side-saddle or in a championship class at the higher levels). Another is that we ensure that our horse’s tack shines and our boots are clean and our jacket free of horse hair and slobber. Long hair tied neatly into a bun with a hairnet also makes a difference. All these factors go towards presenting the right first impressions when you step into the ring in front of the judges. If you are planning on showing your horse, then investing in a tweed jacket may be something you want to consider. My advice is to choose a tweed that is easy to wear and that you can pick out tones of colour that complement your horse: A brown jacket with burgundy plaid, for example, can complement a chestnut or bright bay beautifully, while a green jacket with navy works well for all colours including coloureds. Even your choice of style and colour of tie can be the used as the link to bring the whole look together. For example, a tweed jacket with a very subtle canary plaid can be ‘brought out’ by teaming it with a gold tie and Tattersall check waistcoat, stunning on a dun or a Palomino. Showing is all about complementing your horse with effortless elegance, so look for garments, which combine quality and classic tailoring. Subtle checks on a tweed jacket can also mean there is an easy cross-over with the jacket for dressage and show jumping, offering more versality to those who want more wear, but only have one jacket. Whatever level you plan to show your horse at, have fun and remember a smile is the best finishing touch! For more information visit www.equetech.com

Responsible and sustainable worm control is crucial to help keep your horse healthy and performing at his best. Here Dr Wendy Talbot, equine vet at Zoetis, shares her simple, seasonal guide, to keep these pesky parasites in check all year round.

ood worm control involves much more than just giving a horse a wormer. Worms are becoming resistant to some wormers so it’s no longer acceptable to simply dose all horses routinely throughout the year. Every horse should be assessed as an individual, faecal worm egg counts (FWECs) should be used as a mainstay, and the rules of strategic worming should be followed conscientiously to tackle encysted small redworm and bots. Treatment or testing for tapeworm should be included. In addition, horses should always be weighed before worming for accurate dosing and pasture should be managed efficiently to minimise contamination and the spread of infection.

the contamination of the pasture. Regular FWECs throughout the grazing season will in time build a clearer picture of your horse’s shedding patterns, but remember they will not identify encysted small redworm, tapeworm and bots so you will need to treat for these separately.1 If you have foals or weanlings they will need to be wormed more regularly than their adult counterparts; as a rough guide they should receive a minimum of four worming treatments per year. Roundworms (ascarids) are an additional concern in young foals. FWECs are useful to indicate if this parasite is present, as well as guiding the need for extra treatments for redworm.2

Spring

Summer

Springtime sees many horses turned out onto fresh pasture after a winter of being stabled or with restricted turnout. The arrival of warmer weather also means that worms will start reproducing in greater numbers. If you haven’t already done so over the late autumn/winter, then Spring is the time to treat for: • Encysted small redworm • Bots In addition: • February/March is the perfect time to start conducting faecal worm egg counts (FWECs) every two to three months. • Tapeworm – do not reliably show up in FWECs. Treat or test using a blood or saliva antibody test.

Why are faecal worm egg counts so important? FWECs save the cost of worming horses unnecessarily, but they also help to protect the health of those that do need worming and the effectiveness of the wormers that we use. FWECs are very useful for identifying which horses are shedding high numbers of redworm eggs and are therefore contributing most to

Treat your horse in summer for: • Redworms – treatment is usually recommended if FWECs > 200epg • Roundworms – foals should receive at least two doses effective against roundworms in the first six months of life. Speak to your vet or SQP for specific advice regarding timing and the most appropriate wormer for your foal.

Autumn During the autumn, the larval stages of the small redworm can stop developing inside the horse’s gut and enter a type of hibernating state known as encysted small redworm. Because many of the larvae don’t develop into adult worms, fewer eggs are produced and passed in droppings. On this basis, FWECs can be misleading simply because large number of encysted small redworm can be present without eggs being seen in droppings3. There are three common parasite threats that will not show up in FWECs and will need to be tackled during the late autumn and early winter:

• Encysted small redworm – dose all horses (more than six months of age) in November/December regardless of the FWEC, using a specifically indicated wormer • Tapeworms – do not reliably show up in FWECs. Dose or test using a blood or saliva antibody test • Bots – the bot fly lays eggs in late autumn and bot larvae develop in the horse’s stomach so they should be treated now.

Winter This is a deceptively quiet time of year for horse parasites. Roundworm eggs can lie dormant in the soil for long periods, even in freezing weather. Small redworms can ‘hibernate’ in their encysted state in your horse’s gut wall and won’t lay any eggs so FWECs will not reveal them. Treat your horse in winter for: • Encysted small redworm - dose if not previously treated in the late autumn. • Bots – dose if not previously treated in the autumn. In addition to these seasonal threats it’s important to ensure at least one of the doses given throughout the year is effective against large redworm. Pinworm, liver fluke and lungworm may be a concern for some horses – it’s best to talk to your prescriber to check if your horse may be at risk of these.

Always talk to your vet or SQP Make sure you choose the right worming methods and products for your horse’s circumstances by discussing your worming programme with your prescriber.

Don’t discount the Kimblewick! Words by Stephen Biddlecombe of SB Bits

he Kimblewick bit seems to have fallen out of fashion lately. Part of the Pelham family, the bit is used with one rein. It is said to have been developed from a Spanish bit by the world famous saddler Lieutenant Colonel F.E. Gibson, for Phil Oliver, who lived in the village of Kimblewick, in the Chilterns. According to equestrian writer and editor Elwyn Hartley Edwards in his book ‘Saddlery’, other loriners copied the design and called the bit a ‘Kimberwick’ – which is why sometimes both versions of this name are used. The Kimblewick really describes the cheek pieces of the bit, essentially it has bit shanks with short lever arms that create a small amount of leverage. The rider’s knowledge using this bit is key. If the rider’s hands are held high and still, the leverage effect is reduced; while if the rider’s hands are low, the leverage increases, as the rein will slide about an inch on the Dee-shaped bit ring, and the bit will assume roughly a 45° angle in the horse or pony’s mouth; this causes the mouthpiece to act in a downward and backward motion on the lower jaw, accompanied by a downward pressure on the poll, giving the bit a lowering or leverage action.

Bombers bits produces a range of Kimblewicks; these are very popular versions and all available at World Wide Tack: the Happy Tongue has a medium port, creating space for the tongue, relieving pressure and allowing the horse to relax; the Cherry Roller has rollers that swivel in the horse’s mouth, giving him something to play with and reducing the likelihood of the bit being held in the horse’s teeth; the Bombers Blue is ported to give tongue relief, and the unique material allows the bit to remain light, and encourage salivation; the Snaffle Kimblewick has a curved mouthpiece which distributes pressure more evenly over the tongue and bars - with the offset centre link, it will reduce the nut-craker action and pressure points on the horse or pony’s tongue; the Buster Roller has a link in the middle that is shortened to 40mm, increasing bar and tongue pressure making the bit sharper than conventional link bits - it helps to discourage leaning on the bit; while the Colin Miles has a 55mm centre piece, creating greater tongue pressure and reducing bar pressure. It’s important to note that while the Kimblewick is a very useful bit, and is successfully used by showjumpers, it can be quite a ‘strong’ bit in the wrong hands.

n much the same way that you might spring clean your home to freshen it up for the warmer, lighter days of summer, so you should also pay attention to your paddocks. After one of the coldest and wettest winters many of us can remember, grassland may well be in very poor condition. If horses and ponies have been out, the grass will have been badly poached. The wet may have leached out fertility from the soil and the gateways will no doubt be muddy and uneven. If poaching has been a problem, it can easily be put right, but timing is very important.

First harrow

By spring, the land should be both drying out and warming up. The first thing to do is harrow the field. This will tear out moss, break up and level heavy soil, to improve the soil structure and make a seedbed.

Then fertilise

Fertilising is a vital component to achieving a well-balanced paddock. Suregrow fertiliser is specially designed for horse and pony fields. The fertiliser provides grass with consistent healthy growth; and should be applied either once or twice a year as required. The fertiliser stimulates root development, resulting in a denser sward and therefore suppressing weed growth. After in depth research and development Suregrow Fertiliser has been designed to be slow release and low in nitrogen, avoiding lush high protein grass which can be harmful. Light rain or heavy dew after spreading is ideal to help the fertiliser dissolve into the ground ensuring the key nutrients soak in.

Give it a boost

For an extra boost use CSM, it provides more than 70 minerals and trace elements. A number of these enter into the plant and can be beneficial to the health of the horses and ponies eating the grass. A granular blend of calcified seaweed, CSM is from sustainable sources, sun dried sea salt and a natural source of Magnesium. This results in the formulation which is high in Calcium, Sodium, Magnesium and Chloride.

Re-seeding poached areas

The best solution to resolve heavily poached areas such as gateways and around feeding troughs is to get them re-seeded using easily established, fast growing hard wearing grass such as Suregrow Fast Grass. This seed will germinate at lower temperatures than normal grass seed and can be spread by hand, making it an efficient and quick application process. Before reseeding it is essential to harrow the area and then after reseeding to roll the field, this should take place immediately after rainfall. Ground conditions should be such that tractor wheels should just leave a mark which will then be removed by the roller. It is important to over sow poached or damaged areas as these sections may become invaded by weeds.

Staying on top

Like most jobs, if the preparation is right, then the maintenance and upkeep is relatively easy. Topping makes a real difference. It stops the grazing sward from getting ‘leggy’ and encourages horses to graze the whole field not just parts of it. Remember to always pull out weeds from the root, when you see them, don’t leave them to spread their seeds. Overgrazing can be a big issue. Try to avoid this as the pasture quality will reduce and as the weeds replace grass, paddocks soon look untidy and unkempt. The environment becomes less healthy for horses, the quality of grazing decreases and problems arise. BRITISH SHOWJUMPING NEWS Florence is off to Olympia Nine-year-old Florence Marriott from Tunbridge Wells in Kent won a very competitive Mini Major competition on her pony, 20-year-old Gelvin Castle Grey, to qualify for the Mini Major Final at Olympia. The dream of most aspiring young show jumpers, the competition is a relay style race where each young show jumper is partnered with one of the stars of the show. As pressure and speed combine, it undoubtedly proves an exciting class to watch.

Southerly Roberts wins Winter Bronze League Championship

outherly Roberts won the Winter Bronze League Championship at the British Showjumping Spring Championships at Addington with her super mare, Tinx. The four day show with eight championship titles on offer, had courses designed by London 2012 course designer Bob Ellis and Nigel Jess, which included some former Olympic Games fences. The Bronze League Championship was scooped by Southerly Roberts from Hook, Hampshire riding her own 13-year-old bay mare, Tinx. Last-drawn Southerly secured the Winter Bronze League Final to register her first big win at a National Championships with Tinx. “She goes fast but doesn’t cover the ground, I knew we had to go flat out from the beginning,” said Southerly, who finished second in the 2017 Bronze League Final at HOYS and has competed in the HOYS working hunter for three years. She continued: “She’s grade A now so we can’t do the working hunter at HOYS again because of the rules.” The 13-year-old Carnaval Drum daughter was purchased from breeders Peter and Keith Doyle. “I was breaking-in two-year-old racehorses for Peter’s wife Sally when Tinx (who had been sold) returned, it was perfect timing,” added Southerly, who has produced the mare from British Novice.

Ida Almqvist Ten-year-old Ida Almqvist from Cobham, Surrey secured two impressive wins in April in the Schools League at Pachesham Equestrian Centre. Riding for Leatherhead Trinity School Ida and her pony Bureside Sundial, otherwise known as Sunny, jumped two speedy double clears to take the red rosette in both the 70cm and 80cm classes. Speaking afterwards about her performance Ida said: “Sunny is fun and fast and a very good jumping pony. He can be naughty, but I’m learning to handle him. The competitions have a nice, and a friendly atmosphere and I have made lots of new friends, we all encourage each other and are happy for everybody’s success.” Ida’s mother Suvi added: “Ida and Sunny are a new combination, it has only been a couple of months but they are already doing so well. The ‘Just for Schools’ league is a fantastic opportunity to compete at national level and for Ida to represent her school.” Aiming to move up to the 90cm and 1.00m league classes Ida added “Sunny is a small pony, but he can easily do that.”

What is Sweet Itch?

Sadly around 5% of the country’s horse population suffer from sweet itch. We all know the symptoms, horses with sore skin, constantly itching, but what exactly is sweet itch and is there anything we can do to prevent it. Here Ed Lyall BvetMed Cert EM MRCVS of the Sussex Equine Hospital explains how it occurs and what can be done to minimise the risk.

weet Itch, or Summer Seasonal Recurrent Dermatitis (SSRD), is a problem that affects about 5% of the UK horse population. It is thought that over 50,000 horses in the U.K. suffer from skin allergies in the summer each year. All breeds can be effected but thoroughbred population appears to be less effected. Horses that go on to develop Sweet Itch usually show signs of the disease at a younger age (between one and five-years-old) and it is common for the symptoms to appear first in the autumn. Sweet Itch is an allergic reaction (an immune driven hypersensitivity) to the insect bite of the Culicoides midge and the signs you see are a result of the horse’s over-active immune response. The horse’s body produces an immune response to the insect saliva (which is harmless) and the inflammatory chemicals from the immune reaction damages the horse’s skin. This mechanism is the same as humans who suffer from hay fever. Once the horse starts scratching an itch, the itch sensation becomes greater and this leads to more scratching. This is the itch-scratch cycle that needs to be broken with treatment. The Culicoides midge are most active in twilight, they cannot fly far and do not fly in strong winds, heavy rain or hot, dry conditions. They breed in moist environments and are found near bodies of water. Culicoides are able to breed from late March until the end of October, depending on geographical location. Weather can have a large impact on the number of midges able to breed. Mild damp winters allow breeding to start earlier and mixed summers of rain and sunshine also cause an increase in midge numbers. Symptoms of Sweet Itch range from mild to severe itching (pruritus) and hives (utercaria). The constant rubbing leads to; hair loss, skin thickening and flaky dandruff. Horses usually rub or itch along the mane (base of mane more than pole), back and tail, and in some cases also itch along the legs and under the belly. The constant rubbing and scratching will cause a loss of tail and mane hair. If the rubbing persists then the skin can break causing weeping sores (exudative dermatitis), with a yellow crust. Without attention, sores can suffer secondary infection. Sometimes the sensation is so strong that horses will cause severe damage to themselves or their environment, while in extreme cases, horses cannot tolerate tack on their skin, let alone a rider. Horses can also have behavioural changes including; tail swishing, head tossing, frequent rolling and pacing. Horses may have a general lack of ‘sparkle’, become agitated, impatient and unable to be ridden. Diagnosis is not usually difficult given the clinical signs and time of year. There is no magic treatment for horses suffering from Sweet Itch, only management options.

swelling or heat over a 24 hour period before using more extensively. Head to tail rugs are effective, but should be worn before the midges start biting to stop the itch-scratch cycle. Rugs will also allow sores to heal and hair to grow back faster.

Treatment

Once the midges have bitten, the problem then becomes the overactive immune system. This immune response can be dampened with the use of steroids or anti-histamines. Steroids are more effective, but have greater risks of side-affects, such as laminitis, that must be considered. Anti-histamines may bring some relief but the effect is variable and the high dose rates required are sometimes difficult to achieve. Steroids are often successfully used to combat the irritation, but unless they are accompanied by treatment for the underlying cause of the pruritus, a relapse, weeks or months later is likely to be inevitable. There are also immune therapies available but these require a more extensive diagnostic approach and management options should be exhausted first. Cold water hosing and ice packs applied to the irritated areas can also lead to an improvement. Sweet itch typically appears in spring and settles down to virtually disappear during the winter. For this reason, purchasers need to be aware of the potential risk of buying a horse with no symptoms during the winter. Sweet itch is not contagious, but is classified as an unsoundness and, as such, should be declared when a horse is sold. There is anecdotal evidence that stress (e.g. moving to a new home, sickness, or severe injury) can be a factor when mature animals develop Sweet itch. The practice has the back up of the RCVS Accredited Hospital.

Prevention

Minimise midge exposure, avoid bodies of stagnant water and if possible move the horses to a more exposed, windy site. Chalk-based grasslands have fewer midges than heavy clay pasture. Stable your horse from about 4pm to 8am when midges are at their worst. Using insect-proof mesh on the windows and door of stables may help, as midges will enter stables. Use strong ceiling fans in stables as midges cannot fly in winds greater than 5 mph. If your horse is seriously puritic then you may have to avoid stabling to minimise things your horse can rub itself on. Use an insect repellent, those containing DEET have been shown to be most effective but you should find a fly repellent that suits you and your horse best. Applying an oil to the most susceptible areas of the horse will reduce biting, as midges dislike oils. Re-application two or three times a day may be necessary, remember any chemical product you intend to apply to your horse should first be tested on a small patch on the neck or flank. pleasure ride offering three distances of 8, 16 and 32km was held on the working farm which forms part of the historic St Clere Estate, in Kent. It’s a downland ride taking in Trig Point, the highest point in Kent, and offering amazing views across the Weald of Kent to Canary Wharf and across the Thames to Southend. It was a wonderful day and a great opportunity to take in parts of the Estate not normally open to the public. This Endurance GB South East ride raises funds for the breast unit at Darent Valley Hospital. Ride organiser, Judith Yarnold was diagnosed with invasive breast cancer four years ago and feels it is important to raise funds and to provide opportunities for people to talk about their worries. Many of the riders have been through chemotherapy etc. Breast Surgeon, Ms Seema Seetharam, and Oncologist, Dr Julia Hall, came along to help on the day and were available to answer any questions about breast cancer. Judith expressed her thanks to her team of helpers, friends and family members who helped her make this a ride to remember. She also said: “With over 140 entries this ride has, again, been amazingly successful. For a large percentage of the riders the

St Clere ride is their first experience of Endurance riding. We are all delighted that everyone had a wonderful day. The St Clere Estate is magical, and we thank the owners for allowing us to use this venue for our ride.” The organisers, Judith Yarnold and Kristina Pettit have received tremendous feedback including the following… “Just wanted to thank you for such a great day yesterday. Feeding Tips

for Weight Control and the Laminitis-Prone Equines who are good-doers and put on weight at the drop of a hat, can prove a bit of a headache, at this time of year, as grass is nutritious and plentiful. Every aspect of their management and diet must be considered in order to avoid excessive weight gain and to reduce the risk of laminitis. Jane Buchan of Baileys Horse Feeds explains what you can do to help your good-doer.

Forage Intake

•

Sunny frosty mornings are also to be avoided when the temperature is too cool for grass to grow but the sunlight encourages photosynthesis and the resultant fructan is stored rather than being used for grass growth. Aside from fructan levels, whilst grass provides essential fibre, it is also a calorific forage and intake may need managing simply to avoid weight-gain. Options range from strip grazing, to maintaining nearly “bald” paddocks (electric fencing) to grazing muzzles.

•

Overweight or laminitis-prone equines should never be starved as this can cause further metabolic complications. Forage intake must not fall below the equivalent of 1% of the horse’s bodyweight per day and, for those on a strict diet, will need to be weighed.

•

Although haylage may have a lower overall sugar content than hay, it is generally higher in calories so is best avoided for good-doers. To reduce calorie content, hay should be soaked for several hours to leach nutrients out, although care should be taken in warmer weather as the soaking water can become unpleasant.

Compound Feed •

As an alternative to haynets, consider other forage-extending devices, like hay grazers/bags, hay balls or bins, which can slow forage consumption while minimising the horse’s frustration when trying to access the forage.

For the laminitic, the emphasis is on limiting starch intake which means avoiding cereals. This should not be at the expense of other essential nutrients, however, which are best provided by a low calorie balancer, supplying protein, vitamins and minerals to support hoof growth, health and well-being, without the calories associated with a mix or cube.

•

Remember the importance of exercise in avoiding weight-gain or encouraging weight-loss. Even “pet ponies” can be kept on the move by having to walk round their box/paddock for forage by tying several small nets in different places.

Most balancers also contain pre and/or probiotics to support gut health; this is of paramount importance to the laminitic as bacterial populations in the hindgut are compromised during an attack.

•

The antioxidants provided by balancers are also important as free radical levels within the body increase as a result of stress or illness, like laminitis.

•

Feeding the correct amount of a balancer each day, plus some low calorie chaff, if desired, is a good way to ensure the horse or pony receives all the essential nutrients it needs, whereas “fortified chaffs” are often under-fed so the animal misses out.

•

The laminitis-prone who need to gain condition are best provided with additional calories in the form of highly digestible fibre provided by the likes of unmolassed beet pulp, alfalfa chaff or combinations of the two. High oil supplements are also useful and ideally contain the additional antioxidants required to optimise the metabolism of the oil.

•

Using small-holed haynets and/or a net within a net will help a small amount last longer. Lengthy periods without forage are also to be avoided as they risk gastric ulcers or other digestive upsets.

•

Alternative forage sources include low calorie chaffs, some of which have a lower calorie content than average hay and which can be fed in larger quantities to add variety to the good-doer’s diet. Soaked unmolassed beet pulp is also useful as a small amount, dry weight, soaks up to a large volume, to keep a horse chewing without providing many calories. “Fortified” chaffs, which contain vitamins and minerals, can replace both the forage and bucket feeds but must be fed at recommended levels in order to provide a fully balanced diet. This can seem a large volume so look at the back of the bag and consider the horse/pony’s total forage/concentrate ration as a whole.

Turn-Out •

Whether overweight or not, a susceptible equine’s access to pasture should be carefully managed. Fructan content of grass varies according to light intensity, temperature and stage of growth. Current recommendations suggest that the safest time to turn out is late at night and for them to come in my mid-morning.
