ne of the most moving and memorable moments from this year’s Royal Windsor Horse Show was the retirement of Her Majesty the Queen’s homebred ex-racehorse, Barbers Shop. Produced for the show ring by Katie Jerram-Hunnable, Barbers Shop won a number of classes for retrained racehorses including last year’s ROR Tattersalls Thoroughbred Ridden Show Horse at Royal Windsor, going on to stand Dodson & Horrell Supreme Ridden Showing Championship. Barbers Shop was paraded around the ring by Katie, before having his saddle removed in front of the Queen and some members of her family who were sitting in the Royal Box. He left the arena wearing a very smart rug embroidered with the Queen’s cypher.

Side Saddle Veterans Royal Windsor offers a huge range of classes and ridden entertainment and it was good to see so many riders from the South East in winning form. Beth Robertson won the Costume Concours D’elegance with her 23-year-old horse, Copper Mine. Beth has owned Copper for 15 years and has done everything on him including, Pony Club, eventing, show jumping and dressage up to Advanced level, competing at the Area Festival at Medium level. Beth said: “Copper has excelled at side saddle both jumping and on the flat, competing up to Medium level dressage and even successfully competed in France, Holland and Germany.

Esther Rostron and the amazing Penstrumbly Our Abram won the Side saddle Concours

Now he is older he only does a few things a year, alongside leisurely hacks. However, we can’t resist Royal Windsor, as it is such a lovely local show. My boyfriend was also riding at the Show as part of The Kings Troop, so it was a very special and memorable show for us all round.” Esther Rostron and the amazing Penstrumbly Our Abram won the Side Saddle Concours, making it their fourth win at Royal Windsor. Esther said: “It is definitely one of our favourite shows of the year. There is something special about riding in the Queen’s grounds.” Esther has owned the now 18-year-old for eight years, originally buying him from Paula and Garry Merton. Together they have qualified for the RIHS and HOYs in Ladies Hunter classes as well as competed in many other side saddle classes with great success. Esther added: “Last year he won at every show I took him too, which included Hickstead, Surrey County and Royal Windsor competing in the side saddle classes. He also loves to jump and during the winter we love to do hunter trials and arena eventing, which really keeps him happy. Although he’s 18 he doesn’t feel it at all, which is lovely. He really is my horse of a lifetime.”
