The key to condition

“I use Blue Chip Pro to maximise my horse’s performance. It helps to develop their muscle structure, which is essential for Grand Prix level. Just one mug in each feed keeps them in top condition and looking amazing all year round.”

“Blue Chip Original kept amazing condition on Whitakers Prince throughout the year, and gave him the edge he needed to win Champion Riding Horse of The Year at HOYS 2012.”

“I feed Blue Chip Pro to my eventers to aid their performance, stamina, muscle tone and overall health. Pro keeps them all in top condition, 2012 was an amazing year and the results speak for themselves. Thank you Blue Chip.”

Successful Linda Parelli Master Class A host of riders and spectators made the most of a fantastic Master Class with Linda Parelli at Solihull Riding Club. The five day course offered a rare opportunity for riders in the UK to learn from Linda’s wealth of knowledge and expertise. As well as the riders taking part, the course also provided spectators with the chance to gain from Linda’s skills and techniques. Said Laura Aitken of Parelli UK: “The course was fantastic and provided both the riders taking part and those looking on and wanting to learn with a host of information on how to progress through the Parelli programme and really enhance their expertise to a higher level.” The course covered advanced topics to take the riders’ horsemanship beyond Level 4 and the week involved simulations, classroom time, covered all four savvys and time on the cross country course. www.parelli.com

Find a home for Bessie Pussy Cat Lodge is looking for a new home for Bessie. Frances Reeves said: “Bessie arrived as she was found wandering and was thought to be pregnant. But sadly she was just extremely overweight. She had obviously been a well fed cat and it’s hard to know what her history is. Bessie is now on a healthy diet to encourage weight loss. She is now living with Jennie at PussyCat Lodge as it hoped the extra exercise will help with her weight loss. She was stealing all the food from the other cats in the pen. Bessie would love to find a loving home that will continue to watch her weight. She loves a fuss and stroke. She is spayed and vaccinated.“ For more information visit www.pussycatlodge.co.uk or call Terri on 07947 664539

London’s New Year’s Day Parade

T

he great turn of year tradition is posed to set the city ‘swinging’ with a sensational sixties theme. The magic music and fab fashions will abound as London’s boroughs get to twist and shout their way along the route and feel the love of more than 500,000 spectators on the streets and millions more watching on live TV. Bob Bone, the parade’s Executive Director, says many mayors are keen to get a ‘peace’ of the action. “Jan 1st will be a gas” said Bob, “London will have a fab free party and didn’t they just love those in the Sixties! – plus London mayors get to make a lot of money for their chosen charities.” The 28th annual parade has already amassed more than 8,000 performers from numerous nations who will fill the streets of the West End with a kaleidoscope of colour and the air with sweet sweet music. There will also be 50 horses split into eight groups spread along the parade. There are still a few spaces for horses so if you would like to take part email Caroline Marsh at ukrosettes@ hotmail.co.uk Caroline is also looking for various forms of sponsorship to help cover the costs of transporting so many horses to London for the parade.

Lara Dyson Salutes her Equine Hero Behind every aspiring champion there is always an unsung hero!

The table below shows the numbers of Cleveland Bays from completed census forms to date (10th September 2013), currently living in the UK and Overseas. The Overseas category includes North America, Australia and France.

The team at Alltech are on the search for Equine Heroes everywhere and want to shine the spotlight on the person that helps you achieve your equestrian dreams.

21 fillies all are aged up to the age of 4. 137 mares out of the 159 are born between 1995 – 2009, (between 4 – 18 years). 69 mares out of the 159 are born between 2009 – 2003 (between 4 – 10 years. Eldest stallion 20 years old and youngest is 3 year old, all of which are breeding. In summary: 86% of mares recorded to date from the new census are of breeding age between 4 -18 years. 43% of mares recorded to date from the new census are aged between 4-10 years. Worldwide, from information received up to 10 September 2013, there are a total of 393 purebred Cleveland Bays. The Cleveland Bay Horse is currently categorised through the Rare Breed Survival Trust as ‘critical’ as it is believed that there are less than 300 breeding mares, making it rarer than the giant panda. As the breed Society, we are actively trying to promote and preserve the breed, through highlighting their versatility. The CBHS Census Officer is collating information received on all living Cleveland bays in order to establish a true record of the breed. The Census form details the name, age, sex, parentage and breeding potential of any Cleveland Bays owned by anyone in the world, CBHS members and non-members alike. The Cleveland Bay Horse Society is calling on all purebred Cleveland Bays owned, anywhere in the world - and you don’t need to be a member of the CBHS (Charity) in order to complete the form. Chairman of the CBHS Council P & P Committee says: It is so important that we reach all people who own purebred Cleveland Bays, we know that a lot will not be members of our Society so they will be unaware of how import the accuracy of this survey is to the Cleveland Bay. I do hope that you are able to help us reach non-members which may help find Cleveland Bays we are currently unaware of. We hope to produce a list showing the names of all living purebred Cleveland Bays at some point. Purebred Cleveland Bays can contact the CBHS at info@clevelandbays.co.uk, or download the census form on the CBHS website, ensuring that their Cleveland Bay is added to the census thereby helping the CBHS to determine an accurate record of the breed population. www.clevelandbay.com

Here, Lifeforce sponsored dressage rider Lara Dyson acknowledges her Equine Hero as Charlotte Dujardin. Charlotte Dujardin became an inspiration to Lara when she first saw her compete at Hartpury, performing her dressage to music and scoring highly. She admired how focused she was about perfecting every movement in the test, yet made it look effortless, as though she was just sitting there doing nothing. Lara was amazed to hear Charlotte comment on leaving the arena that she could have done a few things better. Charlotte became Lara’s Equine Hero after her first lesson with her. Cadans, Lara’s KWPN Approved Stallion was five at the time and little did she realise how much he was testing her riding skills. Within minutes Charlotte had him moving like a dream and Lara was in awe of her ability to make a horse so supple and swinging through his back, producing the most fantastic medium trot. It is the little details that make such a difference with Charlotte’s teaching style with Lara often being told she carries too many handbags and needs to turn her hands over. When competing herself, Lara now aspires to always be as competitive as Charlotte Dujardin. Alltech have been the unsung hero behind many of the world’s top feeds and supplements for over 30 years as the leading expert in equine digestive health and as such, want to salute other Equine Heroes. To nominate your own Equine Hero, visit www.EquineHero.com

Lungeing the leisure horse

M

ost people think lungeing is for rehabilitation or competition horses, but think how much more fun you could have if your horse was better balanced and moved with lightness and softness. Lungeing helps to coordinate your horse’s body, allowing him to find his natural balance without the weight and pressure of a rider. Lungeing aims to encourage the horse to stretch across the back and engage his hind quarters whilst moving freely. Training aids can encourage softness and stretching whilst enhancing the outline and improving balance and paces. Good aids, like the EquiAmi lunge aid, don’t fix or restrain but encourage engagement of the hindquarters and lightness of the forehand. Shorter days and reduced hacking time can be the opportunity you needed to try lungeing once or twice a week. If you make it a regular part of your routine you will be pleasantly surprised at the improvements you can make and the time you can save. www.equiami.com

rom 1st – 17th November, Wing Gallery on the High Street in Wadhurst, East Sussex presents an exhibition that will be of intense interest to all horse lovers. Entitled ‘HORSEPOWER’, the show will include new artworks by some of our most talented artists working in the South East today. Gallery owner, Gavin Roweth explains:”We have run themed exhibitions before, but the idea of having a show celebrating ‘the horse in art’ really appealed to me. So we commissioned some of the best artists we work with and selected a few more who already have a reputation for their work in this genre. The result is an extraordinary diverse range of paintings, sculpture, ceramics and photography which I hope our audience will enjoy.” Curator of the exhibition, Kay Jones adds: “The icing on the cake is the Stevenson Brothers agreeing to exhibit their exquisite, hand-carved rocking horses in the show. They have delivered their masterpieces to HM Queen at Windsor Castle and built a hand-crafted carousel for the Sultan of Brunei, not to mention a new rocking horse for William and Kate’s baby George. The design, craftsmanship and beauty of these pieces make them truly collectable works of art.” The show runs from 1st -17th November and the gallery is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10am to 5pm.

Wing invites all readers of Localrider to a ‘Special Saturday’ on 9th November from 11 am to 5 pm where you can view all the artworks, meet the artists and enjoy a glass of wine or two.

Worming autumn into winter

A

Gillian Booth SQP owner of Westgate Labs

utumn is a busy time at Westgate Labs. Both yard and private owners are anxious to check on parasite status when summer grazing is coming to an end. It’s an ideal time for a routine worm count, giving useful information on redworm status, which is needed to plan good worm control over the next few months. As soon as there is a hint of autumn in the air we start to think about tapeworms. As with all horse worming there are choices to be made and don’t be in too much of a hurry with the tapeworm dose. Horse tapeworms rely on an intermediate host, the oribatid mite to spread the infection, a tiny creature which lives on grassland. The horse picks up the tapeworm eggs from his pasture whilst grazing and they take months to grow to maturity. So it follows that the wormer will be most effective when used against the mature worms late in the year. This image shows a Detecting pinworm Tapeworms sellotape test Hopefully you will have been down the microscope. monitoring your horse’s worm egg counts over the summer season and only dosing if necessary and this should continue through the autumn. Whilst tapeworm eggs often appear under the microscope, worm counts cannot be relied upon to detect them as the eggs are not always released into the dung. A better approach is to ask your vet to take a blood sample for a tapeworm Elisa test, but many people just choose instead to give an annual wormer to provide cover ‘in case’ and autumn/early winter is the best time for this. If the worm counts stay low through the autumn months then there is no need to use a routine wormer yet. If you do need to worm for redworm at this time then you might think of using an ivermectin/praziquantel combination wormer to treat both redworm and tapeworm together in one dose, following up with plain moxidectin in winter to treat encysted redworm. Otherwise wait until later in the year and as winter begins treat for encysted redworm and tapeworm in one go using a moxidectin/praziquantel wormer. There are other choices which Westgate’s team of experienced helpers will be happy to discuss, tailoring the advice to suit your horses. A horse kept at higher risk of tapeworm problems should have a second tapeworm treatment in the spring and it makes sense to use a double dose of pyrantel at that time as an alternative drug. There are only two drugs licenced to treat tapeworm in horses. Do contact the lab if you need help with worm control, advice is free. It’s such an important part of good health care for your horse and the old ways are not necessarily the best. Showing Controversy

howing enthusiasts are growing increasingly concerned about a rule being imposed by shows run under Sports Horse Breeding of Great Britain rules, or SHB (GB), that states ridden hunters must be shod. According to the Society, ‘All ridden hunters must be shod all round. The reason is mainly one of safety, as ride judges, whom the Society has to insure, are concerned about the horses slipping on grass’. Ridden Sports Horse classes run under SHB (GB) rules, specifically do not state that horses must wear horse shoes. This is because many sports horse classes are run on artificial surfaces. According to SHB (GB), there are no plans to change the rule. However, there is no evidence to show that horses without metal shoes are less foot-sure on grass, and with increasing numbers of well-informed horse owners now choosing to care for their horses with a barefoot regime, the numbers of barefoot competitors in hunter classes is sure to increase. The matter came to the fore recently when a working hunter competitor at Blair Castle (an event not affiliated to SHB (GB), but which ran classes under its rules), was eliminated for being barefoot. The barefoot community is aghast that the misconception exists that barefoot horses will slip on grass, with many owners maintaining that horses without shoes are in fact more sure footed, having the natural proprioception and traction that shoes remove. Hoof boot distributor Trelawne Equine urges all interested parties to contact SHB (GB) and request that the ruling be reconsidered by the committee. Details at: www.sporthorsegb.co.uk

Case study Becky Chapman, from Ashen Equestrian Centre on the Essex border, and her horse, Blackmoor Mac Rua: “When I bought my Irish Draft horse Mac, he did not (yet) have the movement for dressage, but he continued to mature and develop. He won his first hunter class at local level when he was four; I entered him for Search for a Star and he went on to win The SEIB Search for a Star Hunter Championships at HOYS as a five year old.

Many showing horses, like the striking Pantywaun Commanche, pictured, compete barefoot. It is only the ridden hunters that are required to wear horse shoes Many owners maintain that horses without shoes are more sure footed

In subsequent seasons, Mac went onto qualify for HOYS and the RIHS, and got through to the final seven of The Blue Chip £2,000 Challenge, and took many classes and championships around the UK. However we became increasingly contentious as competitors, given that I choose to manage Mac barefoot. This was a decision made based on my research and experience as a biomechanics coach, for Mac’s long-term soundness, foot function, movement and welfare. ‘Barefoot’ requires skilful management by my excellent barefoot trimmer, Antonio Checha, who trimmed Mac for the conditions so that he went equally well on man-made surfaces, grass, the road and also over jumps. However, some co-competitors and judges considered this a decision I made in order to save money (it doesn’t) or because the horse kicked or struck himself (he did neither). Even though the research and scientific evidence is to the contrary, some remained convinced that Mac was more likely to slip or fall being barefoot.

Becky’s beloved horse Mac was a showing superstar Perhaps the biggest irony is that Mac got his HOYS 2010 ticket at The Bucks County Show, where the horseboxes had to be towed on to the showground, and the going in the ring could not have been more challenging due to the rain. In 2011, SHGB implemented the rule that horses competing under rules had to be shod ‘in the normal way’. This led us to withdraw Mac from classes which would qualify him for RIHS and HOYS in his prime as an eight-year- old.” Very sadly, Mac has since passed away; but Becky remembers him as a wonderful, special horse of a lifetime, has many wonderful memories of him. We are very grateful to Becky for allowing us to share her story with Localrider readers. NOVEMBER 2013 Localrider 23

TRIED&TESTED Horseware Rambo Wug with Vari-Layer

Kensington Platinum Turnout The ‘Platinum Series’ embraces technical fabric and contemporary design. Available in a medium weight and a heavyweight with optional detachable fully lined hood. This new generation of rug means that the weight is not representative of how toasty it can keep your horse - the intelligent fabric and filling used in the rug’s design means that they can be worn in hot or cold temperatures from -6°C – 22°C dependent on weight of rug and thickness of coat. The rug is styled in a clever, 1680 Denier Ballistic Nylon outer shell fabric. 100% waterproof, this outer shell is threaded through with a Teflon and Lami-Cell coating which helps keep the rug clean and breathable whilst protecting and extending the life of the rug.

Researching heat loss in horses, Horseware found that in a standard rug the majority of heat is lost from the back and hip areas. To combat this, they developed Rambo Vari-Layer: a layered rug with increased fibre-fill across these key areas. The Rambo Wug with Vari-Layer is waterproof and breathable and is made from the toughest 1000D ballistic nylon outer, with thermobonded fibrefill and antistatic and antibacterial lining. It comes with the Horseware high cut Wug neck design with patented V-Front closures, front and back leg arches, a wipe clean tail cord and a detachable neck cover as standard. 250g: Chocolate/Chocolate/Blue RRP: £250. 450g: Chocolate/Chocolate/ Cream RRP: £270. Sizes: 5’6 – 7’3 www.horseware.com

Vitamin C:

The Low Down V

itamins are complex molecules involved in essential bodily functions. The body can store fat soluble vitamins (A, D, E and K) so there is no need to supplement these on a daily basis for horses. However, the other main group of vitamins, the water soluble ones (B vitamins, Folic Acid, Biotin, Vitamin C), can be beneficial to horses if their diet and natural synthesis is not providing the required amounts. Physical activity and rapid growth increases the body’s requirement of vitamins, therefore supplementation in breeding horses and performance horses is common practice. Arguably, one of the most well-known vitamins - Vitamin C - can often be overlooked in the horse’s diet. Vitamin C is an important water soluble vitamin which is synthesised in the tissues of horses from glucose. It has antioxidant properties and is also involved in the synthesis of carnitine (an amino acid). Vitamin C is particularly important for joint health, as it represents one of the main water soluble antioxidants present in joint or synovial fluid. Vitamin C is also essential to the formation and maintenance of joint cartilage, tendons and ligaments.

LWP Premium Wood Pellet Bedding • Ultra absorbent for a dryer, cleaner bed. • Quicker and easier to maintain than any other horse bedding • Triple dust extracted so virtually dust free. • Simply add water for a deep comfortable bed • Can be used on concrete floors or with rubber matting. • Natural pine product neutralizes odours. • Premium quality wood pellets at the best prices. • 100% biodegradable • Made from 100% sustainable forestry.

Performance Horses

Several studies have revealed the benefits of Vitamin C supplementation in performance horses as Vitamin C is depleted by stress, of which chronic exercise can be considered to be a form. If you decide to provide Vitamin C supplementation for your horse it is important to note that L-ascorbic acid is poorly absorbed by horses and the form of ascorbyl palmitate is favourable as it is highly bio-available. If you want to provide Vitamin C supplementation to support performance horses it makes sense to use a supplement that also specifically supports joint health, as well as having high levels of Vitamin C. LitoVet®, from Lanes Health, is naturally high in antioxidants, especially bio-available Vitamin C. LitoVet® is the only equine supplement in the UK that contains GOPO® - one of the main active components found in the Rosa Canina rose-hip. GOPO® has been shown to help to maintain, soundness, suppleness and mobility in equine joints and joint tissues.

Double-blind trial

LitoVet® was trialled in performance horses before being brought to market. The published independent double-blind placebo controlled trial, was undertaken on horses in active trotting training as they often develop early osteoarthritis as a result of their intensive programme. All horses were based at the same yard and put on a standardised training regime. Tests during and following the trial showed that the horses’ natural repair processes were more active in those being fed LitoVet® than those on the placebo. When questioned, 70 % of the trainers involved reported that the LitoVet® horses appeared more lithe, supple and easier in their work after strenuous exercise. The patented process used in the production of LitoVet® ensures that the GOPO® and high levels of vitamin C are not depleted, thereby delivering support to the horse’s natural recovery processes helping to maintain soundness. LitoVet® is 100% plant-based and vegetarian. For further information on LitoVet® please visit www.litovet.co.uk or telephone 01452 524 012.

Let’s Go Hunting! With the winter weather dawning it doesn’t all have to be doom and gloom; because it is hunting season. Stephen Biddlecombe of World Wide Tack says don your glad rags, get your horse spruced up and set out on an adventure across the beautiful British countryside.

All day comfort Protecting your horse’s back during a long day of hunting is imperative, and there is nothing more luxurious than a thick Sheepskin Saddle Pad to support and ensure comfort. Sheepskin is a highly breathable natural fibre that allows air to circulate and water vapour to be released – ideal for when horses are working hard and sweating on a chilly autumn day. The highly absorbent fabric is able to hold 30% of its own weight in moisture before it begins to feel damp – ensuring your horse’s back stays drier for longer, reducing the risk of discomfort caused by rubs or sore skin around the saddle area. The Stephens range of Sheepskin accessories are available from World Wide Tack and cater for every requirement – from simple saddle pads, to Gel-Eze Impression Pads, so don’t let discomfort spoil your hunting this season and invest in sheepskin.

Gel Eze saddle pads offer protection at the horse’s shoulder and beneath cantle of saddle The correct turnout for hunting is traditional and smart

rag hunting is one of the most fun ways to socialise and enjoy your equine partner. If you have never been before why not give it a go? Most counties in the UK have a variety of different hunts to get involved in so simply look online or ask friends or family of a group that they can recommend and World Wide Tack is on hand to advise you what you need to do to get prepared to go drag hunting?

Cowboy Magic Green Spot helps eradicate stains

Riding Attire Hunt dress for the rider can be somewhat confusing for the first time participant as the apparel required depends on the time of year and your role in the hunt. Steeped in tradition you will get to know ‘who wears what’ out on the field, but for your first time out you simply need to know what attire you need to don so ask an expert friend, regular hunter or even the hunt themselves when you approach to join to make sure you have the right kit.

Equine Turnout Equine turnout is crucially important and a shiny, well-kept horse is very much expected on the hunting field. In order to prepare to look your best invest in some quality shampoo such as Cowboy Magic Rosewater Shampoo and Cowboy Magic Rosewater Conditioner available from World Wide Tack, or if it is too cold to bath why not try the innovative and handy Cowboy Magic Green Spot Spray? Hunting can be exhausting work for our horses so it may be wise to have your equine clipped before hitting the hills; a full clip may be required if you plan to hunt regularly, but if you are riding an older horse or don’t plan to hunt regularly then a blanket clip should suffice. Remember plaiting is customary so make sure you put in plenty of practice ready for the big day. Quic Braid, a mane and tail control spray, offered by World Wide Tack can be a handy tool, found in many a regular hunter’s grooming box. So now you are all prepared, get out there and enjoy this winter’s hunting. Julie’s story Horse riding is a thrilling, exciting and fulfilling sport. However it can, like all sports, sometimes be dangerous, particularly if you suffer from a physical challenge. The RS-tor rider safety aid helps to combat that danger by helping riders stay in the saddle in the event of situations such as a spook or a buck. It has proved very popular with riders who have physical challenges: Julie Biggs suffers with spina bifida and scoliosis, and regularly enjoys horse riding with the Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA). Here is Julie’s story... “I used to ride as a child, but had to stop as I had to have a full spinal fusion at 14 - this put a halt to my riding, but two years ago I went with a friend to photograph the RDA regionals, and I was inspired. After talking to my daughter I decided to register with the RDA, and in October 2011 I got back on a horse. Despite my excitement I must admit I was utterly petrified. In the December of that year I went to Olympia, and there I bought my RS-tor, which has revolutionised my horse riding confidence. The RS-tor has helped me with my balance and my confidence, and even helped me when the horse decided to buck. I feel like when I ride with the RS-tor, it is like having a seatbelt on. With the help and support of the fabulous RDA instructors, in May 2012 I qualified for the national championships, and in the September of that year, my faithful friend Louis (pictured) arrived at the RDA, and we really bonded. We took part in the regionals, but missed out on the nationals by one point - I came third out of 15. But at the next competition at Wellington Country Park, we won with 73%, and I felt confident and balanced in the saddle. My advice is that it’s never too late; I’m 50 and no matter what disability you have, then live life to the best of your ability!”

The RS-tor rider safety aid

This rider is in good balance – eg her body is maintaining equilibrium against the force of gravity

What is balance, and how does it affect us when riding?

Balance is a term used to describe the body’s ability to maintain equilibrium against the force of gravity. In biomechanical terms balance is the ability to maintain a centre of gravity, often likened to maintaining a vertical line through the body. This central alignment provides a base of support which minimises postural sway and keeps the body upright and in control. Having good core strength is fundamental to quality horse riding and goes a long way to promote a balanced, stable and effective riding position. Your balance and core strength contributes to the position of your hips, seat-bones and shoulders and allows you to cope with the horse’s variation in pace, jumping, not to mention when they spook, leap or throw their heads up. It is also important to remember that your balance has significant effect your horse’s balance, so if you are lacking poise in the saddle your horse will find his work more difficult. Adding ‘out of the saddle’ core strength development exercises into your daily routine will help to improve your balance and your ability to maintain proper alignment and posture in the back, chest and abdominal muscles whilst riding. These exercises can include such as stability and co-ordination activities, sit ups, knee tucks, abdominal crunches or leg presses. Riders often use balance straps around the horse’s neck to help aid balance, but the RS-tor is a safer option. Reducing the risk factors for a fall or accident, the RS-tor allows riders to carry their hands naturally without hanging on to a neckstrap, allowing the seat to remain deep, and promoting centre of balance whilst giving a rider a ‘handle’ on any situation. www.rstor.co.uk NOVEMBER 2013 Localrider 33

Sacroiliac Joint Disease

Words by Ed Lyall BVetMed CertEM (StudMed) MRCVS of the Arundel Equine Hospital

T

he Sacroiliac (SI) joint is the joint between the sacrum and the pelvis in the hind limb. The sacrum is part of the spine and is made up from five fused sacral vertebrae. The pelvis has two wings called the ilium, one on each side of the spine, they curve up each side of the sacrum and their under surfaces are bonded on to the side of the sacrum by a very complex series of strong ligaments. Where the sacrum and the ilium come into contact directly, there are thin strips of cartilage on each opposing surface of bone, bounded by a joint capsule that contains approximately 1ml of joint fluid, this makes up the joint. The SI joint is the junction between the powerhouse of the horse, the back leg, and the spine. It is responsible for transferring the propulsive forces required for high speed forward motion and jumping. It also allows the hind limbs to perform complex movements for dressage.

Caring for and about horses

It is not uncommon for horses to injure their SI joints, the main type of injury that they can sustain is a strain injury of the ligaments. They can also fracture their ilium close to or through the sacroiliac joint. Strain injuries can occur due to a fall or due to abnormal placement of the limb during high force propulsive motion, the muscles of the hind limb and pelvis are so powerful that they can cause cracks in the bones and strains to the ligaments of the limb is not stable when placed and force is applied, also there are complex shear forces that go through the limb and pelvis under loading at speed that can cause injury. Fractures in the SI region can cause a spectrum of symptoms from subtle performance issues to hopping lameness depending on the degree of the fracture, whether it is a hairline crack or a displaced fracture. Strain injuries to the ligaments can also cause a very similar spectrum of symptoms from poor performance to severe lameness. It is not uncommon for SI injuries to be found in conjunction with other orthopaedic problems in horses such as hock pain. Often SI strain injuries will cause issues like a poor jump, pushing to one side more than the other over a fence or asymmetry in step when performing complex dressage movements such as half pass.

Clinical evaluation

Sacroilliac joint examination by the vet

Clinical evaluation will often reveal asymmetry of the pelvis when viewed from behind. There may be a prominent tuber sacrale (tip of the wing of the ilium) on one side or both tuber sacrale may be more prominent than normal – a jumper’s or hunter’s bump. The change in shape of the pelvis is due to the SI joint ligaments stretching and allowing the wings of the ilium to slide out of place relative to the sacrum. This increasing in length of the ligaments results in future instability of the SI joint. Often a sequel to an SI injury is spasm of the musculature surrounding the joint, these become painful on palpation. Also if shear forces are applied across the SI joint this can elicit a pain response from the horse. Diagnosis of SI joint injuries can be made by clinical exam, anaesthesia of the SI joint, Scintigraphy and Ultrasonography. Often the SI joint is anaesthetised and the rider is asked to ride the horse so that we can see if it moves better and whether the rider feels an improvement in the gait. Scintigraphy or bone scan is very useful to pick up changes in bone metabolism in response to injury to the attachments of the ligaments on the ilium and sacrum. Ultrasonography can be used to evaluate the ligaments of the SI joint, it is not possible the radiograph the SI joint in a standing horse.

Treatment Plan

Bone scans

Once a diagnosis of SI joint disease has been made a treatment plan is devised. If it is a truly acute, new injury then rest will be required followed by a careful gradual ascending exercise plan. If the injury is more chronic then usually the joint is medicated by injection of cortisone as a powerful anti-inflammatory into the region of the joint. In some cases caustic sclerosing agents are injected into the SI joint region possibly to tighten the ligaments and desensitise the nerve endings, this is of questionable effectiveness. Tildren is often administered as part of the treatment protocol. Shockwave therapy is used successfully to aid in the rehab after SI injury. A gradual ascending exercise program will then be initiated to build up the musculature around the SI joint to provide support for the weaker stretched SI ligaments. Once the horse is strong and sound it is important not to give it time off as the musculature will weaken again and the build up work will need to be repeated. Many horses with SI joint injuries can be managed successfully for high level sport, unfortunately some do not come fully sound and a residual gait abnormality is seen. The key is to get the horse strong and not to allow the musculature surrounding the SI joint to become too painful in the process. Often it is worth involving a physiotherapist to aid in the rehabilitation.

ROBINSON ANIMAL HEALTHCARE

Horse and Rider First Aid Guide

Correctly administered, first aid can have an important influence on the eventual outcome of an injury. What you do, and how quickly, can have a dramatic impact on healing time. Here Robinson Animal Healthcare offers some practical advice on First Aid for Horse and Rider: Assessing the horse

First of all ensure that neither you nor your horse is in any further danger and make the area as safe as possible. Always remember to keep calm and get help if necessary. You need to then assess the horse, including any wound or injury and decide if veterinary assistance is required, immediately: • Prioritise – profuse bleeding, fractures, burns, suspected poisonings all need immediate attention. • Vital signs – check temperature, pulse and respiration (you should already know what is normal for your horse). • Shock – major trauma, colic, heat stroke etc. can cause a horse to go in to shock. Signs of shock include excessive sweating and rapid shallow breathing. • Look at the colour of the mucous membrane, a healthy colour is pink (very pale may indicate shock, purple/blue may indicate low oxygen levels). • Check capillary refill time and hydration.

Call the Vet when:

• Wound is spurting blood (arterial bleeding). • Wound requires stitching – is the wound deep or longer than 2.5cm is a guide. • Wound has foreign bodies embedded in it. • There is excessive swelling • Horse’s temperature rises above 38.9°C (102°F). • Horse has not been vaccinated against tetanus. • Shock is suspected.

Bleeding Wounds

• Minor wounds will usually stop bleeding within a few minutes and if treated appropriately should not cause undue concern. • More serious arterial bleeding will require emergency attention and pressure should be applied instantly to stop the bleeding. • Apply pressure for at least ten minutes, by holding a pad of non-woven veterinary Gamgee over the wound. If blood begins to seep through place another pad on top. • Never remove the first pad as this will disrupt the clot formation and bleeding will continue. • Once the bleeding has started to slow down the pads should be securely bandaged in place.

Cleaning Wounds

• Clean all open wounds as soon as possible (even minor wounds) with a saline solution or a level teaspoon of salt per pint of previously boiled water. • If necessary clip the coat and clean around the wound area. • Avoid spraying water directly onto the wound as this can force any contamination further inside. • Assess the wound and if unknown try to discover the cause as there may be foreign bodies hidden below the wound surface. • Do not poke about in the wound as this will cause infection. • Flush the wound with saline solution before covering the affected area with a non-adherent dressing if necessary. • Keep the horse in a clean, dry environment.

First aid for the rider

First of all assess the situation and without putting yourself in any danger, make the area safe. The main aims of first aid are always to: • Preserve life • Prevent further harm • Promote recovery

If your horse has puncture wound near a joint it is important to call the vet immediately as it is very likely that whatever made the puncture has left dirt inside, which can lead to infection.

A medical emergency is an injury or illness that is acute and poses an immediate risk to a person’s life or long term health. Below is a list of examples of when a medical professional may be called: • Loss of consciousness • Poisoning

• Severe burns • Spinal injuries • Problems with movement or sensation following an injury • A gaping wound with edges that do not come together • Bleeding that persists after 10 to 15 minutes of pressure • Sudden severe pain anywhere in the body • Breathing difficulties • Sudden dizziness, weakness or change in vision • Chest or abdominal pain or pressure It is a good idea to attend a basic first aid course so that you have the correct knowledge and skills to deal with first aid emergencies. Below is a list of basic points to remember: • Always remain calm and never attempt to deal with injuries if you are not confident of the correct procedure. • If there is severe bleeding apply direct pressure to the wound, raise and support the injured part (unless broken), apply a dressing and bandage firmly in place. • If a broken bone or spinal injury is suspected, obtain expert help. Do not move casualties unless they are in immediate danger. There are many ‘ready-made’ first aid kits – get a good quality one. Essentially an Equine First Aid kit should contain: • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Poultice Gamgee Dressings Bandage Antiseptic wound cream/powder/spray Scissors Tape Thermometer Clean drying /cleaning towels Container for clean water Salt Vet emergency number Address of the yard so anyone can provide directions

The above should be kept in an easy to recognise and find durable portable container. And don’t forget one for the humans too.

First Aid kit essentials

It is highly recommended to check your first aid kit for humans and horses at least once a year. It is surprising how quickly the years go by and suddenly items have gone out of date or more likely someone has borrowed something, promising to replace it. There is nothing worse than going to retrieve a disposable item to find your first aid kit empty. Here are a few items which are always useful to have in your first aid kit.

obody wants to think about it, but winter is just around the corner and with that comes the short days and long dark nights. So, while the sun is still shining, it’s time to get down to the yard and prepare for the winter. Scotts of Thrapston, leading manufacturer of timber stabling, is offering these tips to get you started: • Use a steam cleaner to blast away the grime and moss which can make the yard surface slippery, remove dust from the eaves and stains from the kicking boards and then use a gentler setting on cladding, doors and windows, keeping an eye out for any damage. • Armed with rubber gloves, clear out gutters to make sure rainwater can drain away properly reducing damp and rotting. • At the same time check the stable roof is watertight looking out for any loose tiles. Heavy rain and strong winds could knock them down and be potentially hazardous. • Repair any damage you find inside and outside of the stable, once thoroughly dry you could also re-stain and treat the wood. But this job is best done in the summer when the timber is at its driest.

T HE M ASTERS IN S TABLING

• Freshen up kicking boards with a coat of black and white paint. Look for high quality paints as these can give coverage with only two coats, whereas standard emulsions may take up to six coats. • Sweep the hidden corners of the tack and feed rooms, then scrub the floors with antibacterial cleaner to get rid of the germs that are brought in by muddy boots every day. • If your doors don’t come with metal capping and galvanised metal, which comes as standard with Scotts of Thrapston doors, then make sure you lace them with anti-crib biting treatments. • Check bolts and locks and oil if necessary. Check tie rings and add any extra hooks for new pieces of equipment you have invested in over the course of the year. • Top up your supply of grit ready to sprinkle over snow and ice. • Check the hosepipe for holes and repair if necessary. And, it may well be worth researching into tap insulators to prevent taps freezing on those icy mornings.

• Keep a print-out of the weekly weather forecast as it will help with planning rides and exercise timing. • Finally, take some time to update your emergency telephone numbers, make sure everyone has your number, and you have theirs. FEED NEWS

Electrolytes

– why use them during winter?

Words by Will Douglas – Bio-Chemist at Nettex Industries

A

horse’s body is nearly 70% water and horses are designed to lose heat through sweat and do this extremely efficiently during the summer months especially when they are being exercised. However, horses also lose heat by increased respiration, which causes the horse to lose more water. Equine sweat is hypertonic which means that it contains a higher concentration of salts than in actual body fluid — which means that a sweating horse loses proportionately more electrolytes than water. One litre of sweat is estimated to dissipate heat resulting from 1–2min of extreme work or about 5 minutes of sub-maximal work, be it summer or winter. Amy Stovold (Grand Prix Dressage Rider) explains: “My competition horses are fed electrolytes all year round, but always according to workload. Even on a cold winter’s day with a full clip I add electrolytes to a feed if I have asked my horse to work especially hard and have seen he is sweating. Even with a clipped coat a horse can experience sweating to varying degrees, the key here is like with hard feed, I adjust what the horses are given in line with their individual workload that day.”

Why feed them?

When your horse sweats, he also loses valuable electrolytes, responsible for the correct function of nerves and muscles, and re-hydration is very important to maintaining performance. During the winter months many horses are clipped so it is quite difficult to see the amount of water lost through sweating as it can quickly evaporate from the body. Offering water alone to a dehydrated horse does not restore the balance between water and electrolytes. Instead it serves to delay even further the natural thirst mechanism, so the best way to ensure that your horse is correctly hydrated is to feed electrolytes either in the feed or water to stimulate your horse to drink. All horses should have access to salt, through adding to feed (roughly 2oz per day) or via a salt lick, however for those horses in hard work, hunting, winter competing or schooling, electrolytes are an important aspect of nutritional care. The main electrolytes are chloride, sodium and potassium with lower levels - but still important calcium and magnesium. Electrolytes can’t be stored by the horse, so feeding large amounts infrequently is fruitless, but used sensibly in the days before, during and after work they will stimulate water intake, so that the horse stays fully hydrated and maintains optimum performance levels.

What can electrolytes help prevent?

Electrolyte loss can result in conditions such as thumps, otherwise known as asynchronous diaphragmatic flutter. This is when the

horse’s flank twitches and it can make an audible thump, hence the name. It is not really harmful in itself, but indicates a severe electrolyte imbalance is present. More serious effects that a lack of electrolytes in the horse’s system can cause include tying up, which can cause a horse to collapse. This can be quite common in many hunters or leisure horses that undergo any strenuous exercise then stand around. In the winter months amateur riders may often attend a ‘fun’ or ‘endurance’ ride of around 20 miles, this is a good example of when electrolytes should be considered especially if the horse has been boxed up to the ride and has worked or stood for long periods without rehydrating regularly as he would at home. Hunting horses would also benefit from this approach as the long days until saddle coupled with the tremendous effort required ultimately reduce his ability to take on water, electrolytes will help replace the minerals lost and also encourage the horse to drink on return to his stable.

How do I know if my horse is dehydrated?

Traditionally, dehydration can be checked by the skin pinch test. In a normally hydrated horse, the skin will ping rapidly back into place, wheras a seriously dehydrated horse will have a small residual fold of skin left for longer than might be expected. However, this test can be confusing and inaccurate, particularly as the elasticity of skin varies and shouldn’t be relied on entirely. Other clues include dry or tacky gums and in severe cases, a weak, fast pulse, sunken eyes and cool extremities.

Finally

The key is not only to ensure that you replace fluid and electrolytes at every opportunity, but also to administer electrolytes two to three days before and two to three days after hunting or strenuous exercise. This will help prevent muscle fatigue, stiffness and maintain stamina even during the winter. It is advisable to allow frequent small drinks when exercising, and extremely dangerous to withhold water before competing. Water and electrolytes are normally replenished by a horse’s normal diet, but they may not have the opportunity to do this in a lengthy ride situation. To prevent this Nettex have three oral replacement supplements - a conventional Electrolyte powder, a liquid - that is ideal for everyday use, and a syringe that is ideal for giving to a horse after a heavy session or hunting. It’s important that electrolytes are made up at the correct concentration and even more crucial that your horse finds them palatable and able to ingest them. Why offer nutritional support for your horse’s joints this Winter? Words supplied By NAF

C

areful, well informed joint care and management will ensure your horse’s joints remain fit, strong and flexible. Whatever level or discipline you are competing at, the fact is you will be subjecting the joints to a degree of stress, which is why careful maintenance is so important. Particularly throughout the winter months when the cold weather can mean your horse can feel that little bit stiffer.

What is Joint Stress?

Put simply it is trauma. This may be a sudden one off strain, but more usually, it takes the form of more continual small traumas working away at the joint over time (as the horse ages) which has a bearing on the joints inbuilt capacity to protect itself, especially as the synovial fluid loses its protective properties. As a result the integrity of the joint structure begins to break down causing loss of flexibility, damage to the cartilage and eventually lameness can become an issue. Fitness, management and care about the surface on which we work our horses are all factors that need to be considered when taking care of joint health.

Why Nutritional Support?

Joint stress has undoubtedly received more scientific study than any other health factor of the horse. The results mean we know which key nutrients are most important for offering joint flexibility. It is advised that a quality joint supplement will be based on Glucosamine Sulphate to support cartilage integrity working synergistically with MSM for the nutritional support of tendons, ligaments and associated soft tissue. Chondroitin Sulphate and more recently, Hyaluronic Acid (HA) also show positive benefits. Experience tells us that a blend of these products, provided they are supplied in the correct ratios, is preferable to any single product. We are also clear that the inclusion of naturally sourced antioxidants is particularly helpful for flushing way excess toxins that accumulate around the working joint with detrimental effects frequently turning every day wear and tear into more serious issues.

Which product is best for your horse?

So, once you’ve identified the ingredients you want, how do you choose which product to feed your horse? First, check the formula includes all the nutrients you are looking for. If it doesn’t, ask yourself why, and will it still fulfill your needs? If not, maybe look for another that will. When happy with the formula, check the pack where manufacturers are legally obliged to list the ingredients, in the

weight order by which they are present. So, if for example, the first ingredient listed is “dextrose” or “alfalfa”, do question why you might want a supplement that is largely made up of filler? Many manufacturers will list the inclusion rate of the key nutrients (ie MSM 5000mg per dose etc.). Inclusion rates not only give you a chance to check the levels, but also if they are included at the correct ratio for best effect. Be careful when looking at levels declared by percentage, as these can be misleading. Unfortunately appearances can be deceptive, and if a product looks too good to be true, it probably is, so do be sure to trust the claims you read about the product. Good advice is to choose a product made by a company whose name you trust. For clarification, look for the UFAS accreditation mark (below) as that guarantees full traceability, and therefore quality, for that product. Also look for members of BETA (British Equestrian Trade Association), the industry standard for the equine professional. Finally, make use of manufacturer’s Freephone helplines, which are generally manned by nutritionists who are always delighted to help. Speak to them and get answers to all your queries. You can then make an informed choice when making that important purchase for your horse.

Five Star Treatment for joints

Recommended NAF Products for joint health include Five Star Superflex, available in powder or liquid form and for joint comfort choose Devils Relief. Superflex has full veterinary approval. The unique ‘totally natural’ formula has been developed by vets using pharmaceutical grade ingredients, including nutrients proven to support joint health and flexibility, supported by a unique combination of powerful, naturally sourced ingredients which are ‘scientifically verified’ to have antioxidant properties. The antioxidants effectively ‘mop up’ the excess toxins that may accumulate around the joint and safely excrete them from the system. It must be remembered that often minor strains and traumas, which occur as part of daily work and training, often become a more serious issue due to the proliferation of toxins around the area. www.naf-uk.com Research reference: Protective effect of MSM and antioxidants http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18992134 Tendon loading in jump landing http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11721571

Feed news

What to feed this winter? As winter approaches it is important to look at your horse’s diet and assess whether he needs any extra rations in addition to the grass and hay he is already eating. Remember in the very cold weather much of what he consumes will be converted to energy to keep warm, so if he starts to lose weight or isn’t his normal bright self he may need a little more in his bucket. Here we look at some of the feeds, supplements and products, which may benefit your horse this winter. TopSpec Joint Feed Balancer

The Hay Bar

The new TopSpec Joint Feed Balancer is a very palatable ‘Non-Heating’ feed that combines the benefits of a top specification conditioning feed balancer with a joint supplement. It contains a multi-supplement including the levels of micronutrients and digestive aids normally only found in high quality specialised supplements. Using TopSpec Joint Feed Balancer will support the maintenance of healthy joints plus promote muscle development and topline, optimise bone strength, greatly improve hoof quality and produce a supple skin with an exceptionally shiny coat. TopSpec Joint Feed Balancer contains the veterinary recommended rate of glucosamine in a daily quantity of feed to support healthy joints. This rate is 10 grams of glucosamine/500kg horse/day. It is rich in the building blocks for hyaluronic acid (HA) and chondroitin, with optimum levels of all the micronutrients needed to balance feed and improve its utilisation. It also includes powerful levels of vitamin E and selenium to act as anti-oxidants, neutralising the harmful presence of free radicals and, together with high quality protein, optimising muscle development and function.

Hay Bar is a sound investment. Stabled horses fed from the floor maintain their natural way of foraging. This helps to ensure that mentally they are more relaxed and that there are less respiratory, dental and physio problems, all of which can prove to be costly. Hay Bar helps to ensure that forage does not become contaminated or mixed with the bedding, and this ensures there is little or no waste. Labour costs are rising and filling hay nets is time consuming. The Hay Bar system is labour saving, safer, more hygienic and more natural for horses.

Baileys Top Line Conditioning Mix and Cubes For maintaining condition or promoting weight gain, top line and outstanding muscle tone use Baileys Top Line Conditioning Mix and Cubes. The care taken in micronising the cereals ensures the starch content is as digestible as possible helping reduce any associated risks. Quality protein sources supply a range of essential amino acids for muscle tone and tissue integrity and both feeds are fully balanced with performance levels of vitamins and minerals to support metabolism and well-being. Neither needs to be fed by the bucket-full to get results, so are often more cost effective than cheaper alternatives.

Nettex Air Power Respiratory Boost Nettex Air Power Respiratory Boost is a dual purpose formula that soothes respiratory irritation and congestion. It works by aiding the intake of oxygen in order to improve stamina during hard exercise. Easily administered via your horse’s feed or through a syringe, Nettex Air Power Respiratory Boost loosens deep seated muck in the lungs, helping your horse to breathe and perform much more easily. If airways are restricted and left untreated, the horse will have limited lung capacity which reduces the amount of oxygen that can be delivered into the blood. As a result, performance is highly reduced because the muscles are unable to work efficiently. Affected horses can also develop a cough as the delicate lung tissue becomes more and more irritated. Containing Echinacea, Peppermint, Eucalyptus, Menthol, Liquorice, Ginger and Aniseed gets to work quickly, allowing your horse to perform beautifully without any airway restriction. www.nettexequine.com

www.baileyshorsefeeds.co.uk

Equine America So Kalm Solution

Senior Support As horses grow older they are less efficient at extracting nutrients from the feed which can result in weight loss. Senior Support combines high levels of oils with antioxidants and added Yeasacc1026 to help ensure efficient fibre and mineral digestion, keeping the veteran in tip top shape. Glucosamine HCL is also included to support joint mobility and help reduce any signs of stiffness displayed in the older horse along with Biotin for hoof health and added herbs spearmint and garlic. Feeding Senior Support will help alleviate the symptoms that bring on the aging process, helping ensure the older horse comes through winter well, ready for the season ahead.

The main ingredients in So Kalm are L-Tryptophan and Magnesium. L-Tryptophan is a naturally occurring amino acid responsible for controlling concentration and excitement. Therefore, supplemental L-Tryptophan is an excellent choice for highly strung, young horses or those with a lack of focus. Magnesium plays an important role in nerve health, with a lack of magnesium in the diet being associated with anxiety and tension. So Kalm may need a four to five day build up and can be fed on a long term basis. So Kalm Solution fed daily can aid concentration and willingness to work, but without removing the edge required for competition.

Feed news Blue Chip Joint RLF

PUT TO THE TEST

You can protect your horse’s joints by using a high quality joint supplement such as blue Chip Joint rLF. This will help to ensure your horse’s joints are nourished and protected. Joint problems can often occur from excessive activity on hard ground; this can lead to the production of poor quality synovial (joint) fluid. The joint relies on this fluid for lubrication and protection from wear and tear ensuring the longevity of the limb. blue Chip Joint rLF can help maintain the viscosity of synovial fluid. This revolutionary product not only contains Glucosamine, mSm, Hyaluronic acid, Yucca and manganese, which all help to nourish the joint, but also contains a rosehip extract, rosa canina (more commonly known as the dog rose). rosehip has been proven to be 40% more effective than glucosamine and this specific extract of rosehip has been shown in published scientific studies to be a powerful natural nutraceutical. rosa canina contains a special glycoside that helps maintain joint comfort by limiting the number of white blood cells allowed into the joint. All the ingredients in Joint rLF are 100% natural and contain no banned substances.

Blue Chip Garliq

Lifeforce helps promote beneficial gut mocroflora and reduces the negative impact of undigested hard feed entering the hindgut. It maximises fibre digestion and allows the horse to extract more nutrients from its diet promoting all round good health and nutritionally supporting coat, skin and hoof quality.

Garlic has been used widely in human food and medicine for over six centuries and was even mentioned in early Egyptian medical manuscripts dating back to 1550 BC. Its unique properties include being anti-parasitic, anti-coagulant, and anti-inflammatory along with a whole host of other medicinal benefits. In equine diets it is used for a variety of reasons, but probably its most commonly known use is as a fly repellent. Flies and midges are repelled by the odour from horses that have been fed garlic and it has even been shown to aid worming programmes by deterring tapeworms, pinworms and roundworms. Garlic contains a wide range of minerals including selenium and sulphur. Sulphur has blood cleansing properties and selenium is a powerful anti-oxidant, helping to protect the immune system and aid the healing of wounds and infections. Garlic supports the respiratory system with its anti-oxidant properties and contains a substance that helps to remove mucus from the respiratory tract. It aids digestive health by helping to remove pathogenic bacteria and protects the liver by having the ability to stimulate the lymphatic system. Garlic contains a natural source of MSM (commonly found in joint supplements) and has anti-inflammatory and pain relieving properties. Garlic is one of the most commonly fed supplements in the equine industry; however it is widely available only as a powder or granule. Blue Chip Garliq is a liquid form of this powerful natural supplement, enabling it to be absorbed into the bloodstream faster and more efficiently. It also means less mess and less waste when feeding and horses love the taste. Blue Chip Garliq is made from a superior form of concentrated, pure garlic oil. Garliq can be fed all year round to aid and support your horse’s health.

BEDDING NEWS Making the perfect BEDMAX Bed

Liverpool Wood Pellets

Tailor made shavings such as bedmAX shavings are designed to provide your horse with a deep, resilient, cushioning, completely natural, dust free bed. Preparing the bed properly in the first instance will make the most of all these benefits. bedmAX recommend a bed at least six inches deep to provide the optimum comfort, protection and drainage. regular mucking out will keep the surface of the bed clean, loose, supportive and dry - an important factor in keeping hooves and legs in good condition. Using the right fork will minimise any waste of clean shavings, requiring only one bag of new shavings a week to maintain an ideal bed.

For a 12 x 12 stable with rubber matting you will need 3 - 4 bags of pellets. Empty the bags and then level out with a shavings fork. A fork with narrow tines works better here. Sprinkle the pellets with approximately 3 to 3.5 litres of water per bag. Use a watering can with a rose attachment to ensure an even spread of water. As the bedding is so absorbent, it takes moisture from the droppings, so when you muck out take care to pick up just the droppings pile, avoiding taking too much bedding with it.

Cost Effective Feeding this

Winter

Dr Tom Shurlock of British Horse Feeds discusses the hot winter topic of cost effective feeding.

C

ost effective feeding is not about being a cheapskate, or penny pinching, or denying your horse the correct nutrition or treats. It is not about economies of scale, bulk buying, special deals (although these are always welcome) or incredibly complex feed varieties. It is about providing the best you can without wasting money. And these days that must be something we all need to do.

Lifestyle & Environment

So how do we go about cost effective feeding, and is it all about the feed itself? not entirely; lifestyle and environment will obviously dictate nutritional needs, but cost effective changes can be made within these parameters to get the best out of the feed. So where to start? The obvious place is the feed and its suitability to do the job. Are we providing the right level of nutrients for the job? High protein, for example, looks good for a working horse, but chances are most of it is utilised for energy. not a problem for the horse’s health or wellbeing as long as it not excessive, but a waste of money – protein is expensive. Likewise do we need all these supplements and nutraceuticals if the components are already present in the feed? A little thought and we can decide to use these additives more specifically and potentially save on this.

Good Forage

but the greatest input we can have is to get the best out of our forage. Per unit of nutrition forage, whether grazed or preserved, is the cheapest feedstuff we can give our horse and it makes sense to optimise its use. At the same time giving hard feed is necessary in a variety of situations and this appears to be highlighted by the vast range of cubes, mixes, balancers, blends, premixes and straights in the market place. However, nutrient quality of the forage can change with time and climate and this should be taken into account by adjusting the amount of hard feed accordingly. This approach utilises the nutrition of the forage to its maximum and then supplies additional nutrients through the hard feed to meet the animal’s requirement. You can see there will be times when forage is poor, when more hard feed is needed, and this hard feed may be more expensive than previous months (drought in South America – Soya prices go through the roof). but despite any changes in cost this approach will provide optimal and cost effective feeding.

has an important benefit. Short days and long cold nights are associated with lower feed intake but by improving hindgut fermentation and its associated heat generation we can maintain energy intake and body temperature, and so help keep condition through the cold period, more so if we can give them a hot mash! Speedi-beet & Fibre-beet can and should be integral in your cost effective feeding. For more information please contact British Horse Feeds on 01765 680300 or visit www.britishhorsefeeds.com

Fibre Fuel • Non-heating • Highly digestible fibre • Low starch/sugar • Maintain condition

5

• Feed warm in winter to raise core body temperature

“In winter I increase the amount of Speedi-Beet Pumpkin has so she can utilise the fibre to keep warm and maintain condition. It is non-heating so I never have to worry about excitable behaviour” Rebecca Wright

Beet fibre

but we can do more. And that is to stretch the nutrition we can get from our forage. digestibility of forage is around 55% and there is potential to improve this. beet fibre pectins have been shown to improve overall fibre digestibility across a number of animal species, including the horse. It is believed these specialised fibres help boost the hindgut bacteria that ferment other fibres (hemicellulose) in forage, and adding 500g of beet pulp can achieve a 5% improvement in overall forage digestibility. This relates to 750g of a standard horse cube, without taking into account the inherent value of the beet pulp itself. Additionally beet has been shown to improve digestibility of alfalfa by 25%. So by employing a beet product such as Speedi-beet or Fibrebeet, you can improve grass or hay utilisation and reduce the reliance on hard feed. not only does this make good economic sense but it also gives you greater flexibility to target your use of hard feed for specific activities. As we approach winter this improvement of forage utilisation

father figure

The behind the scenes hero… Roger Trapp

Any successful equestrian will tell you that the key to success is a great back up team, be it a trainer, sponsor or family member there are just some people we cannot be without. In this continuing series we meet ‘the dads’, so important and so supportive, but very rarely known. Mayfield School student, Lucie Trapp, is sixteen-years-old and has recently started competing in dressage and show jumping with Smokey. Lucie started her partnership with the Irish Sports Horse a year ago and has made the progress from ponies to horses thanks to Smokey’s wonderful nature and the support of her family – especially her father, Roger.

Lucie jumping Smokey

Roger Trapp and Family Lucie with her pony Toffee who is now out on loan

Name: Roger Trapp Home-town: Sevenoaks, Kent Occupation: Freelance journalist Off-spring: Georgia (twenty-one), Lilly (nineteen) and Lucie (sixteen).

Lucie and Smokey

How did you become involved with horses? My grandfather used to breed horses and I was made to ride ponies before I could walk, but then as soon as I could walk I knew that there was no point riding anymore. All my daughters started to ride when they were small but Georgia and Lilly decided that they wanted to sail instead, so I suppose it’s through my youngest Lucie. Do you ride yourself? No, but I can. Favourite horse or pony and why? Smokey – because he is so quiet and just stands there when you want to bring him in from the field. What area of the sport are you involved with? Dressage and Show Jumping. How do you support your family with their sport? The unpaid groom and transporter, basically everything to help my daughter. What’s the best thing about competing? Of course winning, but it’s more about the fun that my daughter has and the smile on her face when she does well. What’s the worst thing about competing? The early starts. Favourite show ground snack? We always bring a picnic to an event; it’s much more appetising than a greasy burger and chips.

Lucie with Toffee

How do you and your family like to celebrate a big win? A nice dinner together as a family. Favourite show ground and why? Redlands because it’s so friendly and the shows really help to get on your feet and more importantly it’s only a mile down the road also you can train there before a show so your horse isn’t so tense on competition day! What do your friends think about what you and your family do? Most of friends ride too or are country people so they don’t think that we are that mad!

If you would like to nominate your father to be featured in Localrider email alex@localrider.co.uk NOVEMBER 2013 Localrider 81

Where do you buy your copy of Localrider: I have it on subscription

Horse’s name and age: Fleetwater Special Delivery (Diva), aged 13.

Favourite Tack shop: Windmill Feeds and Saddlery

How long have you had your horse? I started to ride her in 2011, but she has been in the family for eight years. What do you do with your horse? I am now starting to go affiliated show jumping and also I do Pony Club eventing and Pony Club. Future goals and ambitions: To be an eventer and show jumper Favourite food for your horse: Herbal treats, but she ate them all!

I have two other horses at home that I don’t compete and I have a three-year-old youngster who we bred (Leading Darco aka Darco) and I have a thoroughbred who we loan out to my friend and she is Darco’s dam (Leading Lady aka Lady). Over the winter Diva had a lung infection and she was quite unwell, so she wasn’t competed as much then.

Sound Advice

for ultimate flexibility for life

Peter Charles, British Olympic Gold Medallist “I expect no less than the best from my horses at all times. Therefore it’s my responsibility to give them the best. I give them Superflex to maintain the health and flexibility of their joints, in return they remain strong, supple and able to perform to their best. I advise you do the same, whatever you do with your horse.”

Superflex is unique. The totally natural formula has been developed by vets using premium grade, fully traceable ingredients, including nutrients proven to support joint flexibility, supported by a powerful combination of naturally sourced ingredients selected for their rich antioxidant properties, and these really do set Superflex apart from other joint formulas.

For more details please call our Freephone Advice Line: 0800 373 106 or email info@naf-uk.com

Superflex has full veterinary approval. Plus it is the choice of many British Team riders, including Gold Medallist Peter Charles. Take their advice and give your horse’s joints the five star treatment he deserves.
