eptember has been another busy month with trips to Burghley (see page 8) and the Charles Owen Pony Racing Finals at York Racecourse (report next month). As we go to print I am preparing to cheer on the local riders who have qualified for the British Dressage Championships at Stoneleigh as well as the Sunshine Tour Championships at Great Bookham (report next issue). The following weekend is busy with both the Southern Unaffiliated Horse Trials Championships as well as the South of England Horse Trials and then hopefully I have a few days in the office before the British Show Jumping Ball, when the winners of the Club Show Points Series will be presented with their prizes. It is always a wonderful evening and extra special when we have local riders winning prizes. Although dancing may have to finish early, so that I am ready to catch all the action when the Horse of the Year Show starts the following morning. I have really enjoyed working on the show reports this month. I love trying to spot who is new and who has been featured before and best of all I enjoy reading your stories. One of my favourites this month was sent in by SophieRose Bance (page 14), whose fiancé, Ashley Long, has started riding her mother’s all-rounder, Gismo, with rather a lot of success. I hope you enjoy her story too. There has been lots of excitement at Localrider HQ this month for other reasons too. Karen is now a grandmother, as her daughter Adele (a previous winner of the Mini Challenge at Hickstead) gave birth to a son, Frankie, and the new Localrider website has gone live. We know you love winning prizes and throughout the month of October you will have the opportunity to win some wonderful prizes simply by logging on to www.localrider.co.uk The website is in its early stages and we hope to be adding a lot more new pages to keep you entertained over the winter months. You can keep informed of what is happening by signing up to our e-Newsletter either online or via Facebook. As always stay in touch as Karen is now a we love to hear from you. grandmother to the gorgeous Frankie

What makes Vetroflex different?
A
nimalife products are all backed by scientific research and utilise some of the world’s leading ingredient technologies. The result is superior products, backed by vets, to help your horse perform exceptionally. Vetroflex is not your typical glucosamine, chondroitin or hyaluronic acid mobility formulation. Taking a totally different approach to joint care, Vetroflex contains the optimum ratio of specially optimised collagen peptides and amino acids needed to protect, strengthen and rejuvenate healthy cartilage in the joints. This simply means that not only will Vetroflex help prevent future joint conditions and make your horse more supple and comfortable in his joints on a short-term basis but it also contains ingredients which are clinically proven to help repair existing damage in the joints. Whether your horse suffers from a degenerative joint condition, has developed wear and tear on the joints over time or you simply want to take a proactive approach to mobility management, Vetroflex is the only nutritional joint supplement you will need this winter. Natural, side effect free, gentle on the stomach and free from banned substances, Animalife are so confident in the results of Vetroflex they offer a money back guarantee subject to terms and conditions. www.animalife.co.uk
The Perfect Silhouette The Childéric Silhouette Girth is a brand new dressage girth, which has been designed to help solve the problem of saddles moving forward. Most saddles move forward because the build and movement of the horse is such that the girth cannot stay back and therefore wants to move and take with it the saddle. Created to utilise the power and shape of the horse, this girth has been designed to help keep the girth and ultimately the saddle in the ideal place for the horse and rider. This girth also helps the even distribution of pressure even on a horse’s narrow girthing area. The girth embraces good looks with performance through its anatomically design. Featuring triple thick elasticated ends for excellent saddle stability and an ergonomic cut to ensure even distribution of pressure, the shape of the girth allows the girth to sit in the correct position, without catching the horse around the sensitive area behind the elbow and eliminating the possibility of trapping the muscles. The girth can also be adjusted in width for a bespoke fit. www.childericuk.com

KM Elite Products new Adaptor Pad KM Elite Products have just launched the Adaptor Saddle Pad. The clear spine, which is swept up at the wither, relieves pressure on the horse’s back, allows air to flow through and ensures an optimum fit. The sheepskin encourages muscle relaxation and improved blood circulation, whilst maintaining a soft comfortable contact with the horse. The pads are fully breathable and the Merino fibres help wick away sweat, holding 40 times their own weight in moisture, which keeps the horse cool during the summer and warm in the winter. There are four pockets with Velcro fastening, two on either side, front and back, and each pad comes with 16 inter changeable inserts of 12 felt shims and four memory foams to allow the rider to personalise the pad to suit their own saddle. The shims and memory foam inserts can also be purchased separately in packs of four should the original ones become lost. The Adaptor Pad can be washed with ease at a maximum temperature of 30 degrees, and dried flat, naturally. Available in White/Natural - Medium and Large, and Black/Natural - Large. www.kmeliteproducts.co.uk

‘Barefoot’ isn’t just for happy hackers we would like to share with Localrider readers a case study of a top-level barefoot dressage horse
K
Could my horse go barefoot?
Fleur De Lis
The three major points that will be cited by the vast majority of barefoot advocates when referring to a successful barefoot horse are:
eith Robertson is a dressage rider and trainer who competes a range of horses and has trained countless Grand Prix horses and riders. Keith’s training system is based on a kind and sympathetic classical approach, enabling the horses to grow and mature at a rate best suited to them, without pressure or force. This system has produced successful horses at all levels, and Keith continues to train many clients to national, regional and area festival success.
Keith says that barefoot is a practice he has adopted with a number of his horses for many years. One of his Prix St George horses in particular, the 15-year-old Dutch Warmblood Korenbloem mare Fleur De Lis, is gaining increasing interest in the dressage world, as she competes barefoot. Fleur De Lis, known at home as Flora, has spent her entire life without shoes, having previously been ridden by former British Team Member Anna Ross-Davies, before the mare came to Keith six years ago. Keith says: “Flora is a very fine and light-footed mare, and so has minimal load landing on her feet during her work sessions. Obviously being a dressage horse, she spends a high percentage of her time working on a synthetic surface, however we are very lucky that she seems naturally blessed with strong, hard feet. Flora has always been barefoot whilst she has been with us, and it has always suited her well. She has never had any soundness issues and we are proud to compete her au natural!”

Keith competes a range of horses from Novice to Prix St George level and has previously been part of numerous British Teams; he has trained countless Grand Prix horses and riders. He has also personally trained with top riders including Emilie Faurie, Laura Richardson and Carl Hester.
Flora’s regime
Flora’s barefoot management includes having her feet trimmed by British Three Day Event Team Farrier Brendan Murray on an ‘as and when basis’. This means that rather than following a ‘hard and fast’ rule about when her feet are trimmed, she is treated accordingly to her individual hoof growth. Flora is fed a straightforward, highfibre diet with daily turnout; her farrier Brendan claims Flora has feet “like concrete”. Keith says: “Throughout the summer, the feet may have a rasp run around them a couple of times between full trimming Hoof boots appointments, as it is a little Many owners of barefoot more likely that she will chip horses choose to use hoof a piece of hoof off here and boots for the transitionary there during the drier months; period from shoes, or for but apart from that, has no the longer term. Rambo® Vari-Layer™ : more warmth, less weight. Some of the best ideas are so obvious
Researching heat loss in horses, we found that in a standard rug the majority of heat is lost from the back and hip areas. To combat this, we developed Rambo® Vari-Layer™ : a layered rug with increased fibre-fill across these key areas that wraps closely around your horse, trapping more heat with less weight.

Winter Grooming We all know that the winter weather can make it more challenging for us to keep our equines clean and comfortable, and the onslaught of rain and mud can cause the risk of skin infections such as rain scald, dermatitis and mud fever to be more prevalent. Therefore alongside plenty of warm rugs, quality forage and keeping a vigilant eye on our equine’s hooves and general health we should provide sufficient coat and skin care. Stephen Biddlecombe of World Wide Tack tells us how providing this care allows you to bond with your horse, keep them looking great and protect their health and welfare too! Bathtime bliss
Keeping your equine clean and hygienic is important, so if you can – before the temperatures fall – prepare your horse’s coat for winter with a bath to remove the summer’s build-up of dirt, grease and products. Horses have notoriously sensitive skin which can be susceptible to irritation so using a shampoo which is specifically designed for equine use is highly advisable. World Wide Tack offer a range of luxury, effective and equine specific shampoos and conditioners including brands such as Quic and Cowboy Magic so you can be sure your horse is not only clean, but that they are gleaming too. The equine coat can sometimes look a little dull over the winter so if you are competing, or simply want to keep your horse looking smart, investing in a colour enhancing shampoo can be money well spent. The products work in two ways; through the inclusion of horse friendly dyes or blue agents to match the horse’s natural coat, or by including optical brighteners, which increase the coat’s ability to reflect light making it appear brighter and shinier. It is not all just cosmetic as keeping your horse clean through bathing will help minimise the risk of bacterial infections like mud fever and rain scald.
A full clip is ideal for horse’s in regular work during the winter months - but ensure you have sufficient rugs to keep them cosy
Stephen’s top tip Using a polishing mitt such as the Sheepskin Grooming Mitt will promote circulation, increasing our equines warmth and comfort during the winter months and allow us to bond with our equines whilst cleaning and cleansing the coat.
No sweat this winter
All horses and ponies will grow a thicker, heavier winter coat in order to protect themselves against the cold weather. However if you ride your horse or pony regularly during the winter during exercise your equine may struggle with the level of warmth his coat is providing. This results in excessive sweating and the thicker and warmer his coat is, the more he will sweat. When your horse cools, it leaves a residue of cold sweat on the coat, which struggles to dry, lowering the horse’s core body temperature and increasing the risk of your horse or pony catching a chill. Clipping not only reduces the amount your horse sweats; it makes it easier for equines to dry after exercise. It also helps horse owners to improve the general appearance and condition of the coat and allows the removal of mud to be much more seamless. Using a product such as Cowboy Magic Green Spot remover is ideal for keeping a clipped coat clean – without the use of chilly water or bathing – and can be used not only on black, chestnut and bay horses all over the body, but on stubborn stable stains on grey or white coats. Taking it slowly
Choose a quiet stable with minimal distractions
...Top tips when taking on a nervous horse. By Instructor Michaela Huntington
I
f you have recently acquired a difficult, young, nervous or previously abused horse, you will need certain skills to gain trust and understanding, with plenty of groundwork and handling before considering ridden work. A frightened horse is a dangerous horse and can be sharp and unpredictable, and may lash out purely as a defensive reaction. Initially it is a very good idea to wear your riding hat and suitable footwear when dealing with him, plus gloves when leading. The following points should be taken into consideration.
Environment
Choose the best stable for the horse – one where he is close to other horses and in a quiet position where loud noises, farm machinery, children and any other distractions can be avoided as much as possible. Being a herd animal, he should never be left alone, as this will cause anxiety. If you are a one-horse owner, acquire an animal companion for him. When turned out he will need a friend either in the same field, or adjacent.
Your horse must learn to trust one person before he is likely to accept all humans
One on one
Your horse must learn to trust one person before he is likely to accept all humans dealing with him. A bond must be created between you, and generally the best place to start is in his stable, where he has limited movement available. Speak softly and frequently, with confidence to reassure him that you mean him no harm. Allow him time to sniff and accept you as he is naturally curious; always keep treats in your pocket so that each small step forward can be instantly rewarded. Once you are able to handle him easily, move on to other aspects – grooming, hoof-picking, changing rugs etc. and when this is established in the stable, tie him up outside and repeat what he has learned.
Patience
When first riding, mount and ride with a helper or instructor present
Ensure your schedule allows you ample time to devote to the horse each day. A new lesson of any kind must be open-ended, and if you haven’t the time, leave it for another day. Whatever task you may set – i.e. grooming, hoof picking, handling the ears, putting on tack - always try to finish it no matter how long it takes, and reward periodically. Do not set yourself a target and fail, so set small stepping stone goals that are achievable. If he should be nervous at one particular point, do try to repeat this on a daily basis as this will diffuse the situation to a commonplace occurrence.
Routine
Organisation of his life is important so that he has set times for feeding, grazing and exercise and once established, he will be more likely to settle in his new home.
Moving forward
When you have a happy, relaxed horse in and out of the stable, you should start lunge work to make sure that he is not going to panic in a work-related situation. This is a transitional stage to ridden work done for your own safety. By now he will be very accustomed to your voice and should be calm and obedient under your control and when he is confident in walk, trot and canter, with tack in place, you can consider further work under saddle.
Getting on board
The RS-tor features an unobtrusive strap that is held in the hand
Once you are ready to ride the horse, consider using an RS-tor rider safety aid – this gives the rider stability in the saddle, thanks to a ‘bungee’ element in the strap that absorbs unexpected movement caused by spooks or unwanted behaviour, such as spinning and bucking. It simply attaches to the stirrup bars, with the leathers going over the top of the RS-tor harness, and an unobtrusive strap is held in the hand – it only comes into effect when the strap is taughtened, and it helps the rider regain their balance and seat, preventing a fall. Gersemi Liv Vest Need to be warm, but want to keep your arms free when riding this winter? Then this LIV vest from Gersemi is the ideal wardrobe companion on those crisp cold winter days. It is Down filled and is ultra-soft and lightweight. The vest is hip length and has a fitted silhouette designed to be flattering. The collar is high to keep out the elements and is lined with a dark brown, super soft, faux fur fabric.
Autumn clothing this season seems to be a mix of wonderful rich colours. Fabrics have a technical element and jackets appear warmer yet more lightweight. With the early fall in temperature we have been grateful to try these gorgeous garments.
Colours: Bordeaux, Ink (Nylon fabric) and Moss, Mocha ( Nylon/Tweed fabric mix). Sizes: XS – XL RRP: £156 www.zebraproducts.co.uk LR Comment: This is a really smart, warm and stylish gilet. I love the high collar as it covers the area, which is normally so hard to keep warm.
Visijax® Jacket
Mark Todd Milestone Boots
The Visijax jacket has built-in LED lights that switch on when motion sensors detect a rider has lifted their arm to indicate when turning. The lights activated in each arm of the jacket stay on for five seconds giving the rider enough time to turn safely. Every Visijax jacket has three sets of integrated LED clusters with standard vehicle lighting codes - white for front, red for back and amber for the turning signals. The lights are activated by a quick press of the power button on the outside of the jacket enabling it to be turned on and off without difficulty.
Manufactured in waxed nubuck leather, these smart and practical boots have a lightly quilted lining and are ideal for wearing on the yard or whilst riding. The full-length zip makes them easy to take on and off, while the elasticated panel helps ensure a good fit.
Available from Amazon LR Comment: Really lightweight jacket, which is weatherproof and comfortable to wear. The flashing lights certainly catch the driver’s attention.

WE ARE HAVING A MASSIVE SALE ACROSS OUR ENTIRE RUG RANGE DON’T BUY YOUR WINTER RUGS UNTIL YOU SEE WHAT WE HAVE TO OFFER!! Laura lungeing her young homebred, Nessa
Laura Powell writes...
For the first time since I started eventing I’ve finished my season eight weeks before the end of October. Spud’s final run was Firle, and again he just wasn’t happy going cross country, after show jumping really well and doing a good test in what appeared to be the busiest Firle ever. The crowds were heaving and cars were queuing to get in.
Sunday afternoon fun!
So we are going hunting, to try and rekindle his spark. He couldn’t believe his luck when he heard the cry of the Kent and Surrey Bloodhounds last weekend when we attended one of their ‘hound exercises’. With adrenalin pumping he felt a completely different horse. I was accompanied by my good friend, Siegfried. He also had a horse that was in need of a bit of ‘get up and go’. He certainly got what he bargained for, and all for the very reasonable price of £10! His horse bounced forwards, sideways up over backwards, landing them both on there backs in a thick hedge, but undeterred they carried on. I wasn’t sure if I was safest in front, behind or at the other end of the field. The opportunity came for a good pipe opener, which should have settled Duetz (Siegfried’s horse). I hedged by bets and set off in front, knowing Spud has a good gallop. You can imagine my surprise when Duetz came alongside me mid gallop, minus his jockey (again), who eventually caught up after hitching a lift from the Gator. A brilliant way to spend a Sunday afternoon and the opening meet can’t come soon enough.
Trying to catch a fairy
Elsewhere Alf is now feral, refusing to be caught. Currently fat and dare I say it, sound. However, soon I will have to wrestle him down to get a rug on him, as he is a complete fairy when it comes to the cold weather. Daisy isn’t right and we are currently trying all sorts of shoeing options to try and solve the problem. She is now nicely round, with no muscle, looking like she is about to drop, so it will be a slow process bringing her back to fitness. Nessa and Whoopi are progressing. Whoopi is hacking out, doing walk, trot and canter, as well as bold with all sorts of traffic – any takers? Police horse potential. While my homebred, Nessa, is taking things on board slowly. I’m pleased to announce that I have been onboard, even if it was for a walk around my small concrete yard. Now I’m concentrating on getting my steering by long reining so when I do get out of walk I will hopefully have some control.

Coping with Mud Fever There is no doubting most horses enjoy a good roll in the mud, but the continual wet weather last year didn’t give the fields a chance to dry out before winter, resulting in unprecedented cases of mud fever. Different horses seem to react better to some products than others, so sometimes it is a case of trial and error, if in doubt call the vet. Treating Mud Fever
Mud Fever is primarily a bacterial dermatitis that affects the limbs below the knees and hocks. The bacteria lives in the environment and when there is a break in the skin’s natural defence mechanism, such as when it becomes too wet, the bacteria infect the tissue. The bacteria cause an inflammatory response in the skin, causing it to ooze serum, which dries on the surface of the skin, forming a scab. • If your paddocks are very wet keep your horse in on a dry surface, being able to turn out in a school is a benefit. • Remove the scabs as these are protecting the bacteria. Use an anti-bacterial shampoo. If you leave this on the scabs for a few minutes it will help soften them, but sometimes it is necessary to rub them off. • Rinse the skin and dry with paper towel. • It may be necessary to continue washing the legs once or twice a week. • After washing the legs apply an antibiotic cream. • If the horse has to be turned out make sure the legs are dried and patted with paper towel afterwards.
This horse has been badly affected by mud fever Although the leg still looks sore, the infected areas are healing and responding well to treatment.
• Some people find using a barrier cream on their horses before the mud fever takes hold helps to prevent it occurring
What can I do to help?
There are a wide range of off the shelf products which can be used to try and prevent mud fever as well as for the treatment of it, here we look at some of them..
Robinson Animal Healthcare Activ Wash® Activ Wash® is a mild, antibacterial cleanser which gently removes scabs and debris caused by mud fever or rain scald. Available in a 500 ml bottle, it can be easily applied with a damp sponge.
www.robinsonhealthcare.com
Heel to Hoof Soothing Cream Use Heel to Hoof Soothing Cream regularly as a barrier to protect vulnerable areas from water, sharp grit and dirt. Keeps the skin supple and in peak condition without sealing or impairing the natural skin function. It is rich in Lanolin BP and Concentrated Herbal Oils known to possess anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and soothing properties to help protect against winter related conditions, soothing sore, cracked, pink areas and helping to restore hair loss. Scabs soften, loosen and fall away naturally without any pain to the animal. Free from all prohibited substances under current FEI and HRA rules.

Equine America Fungatrol Cream
Equine America Fungatrol Cream conditions and protects the skin. After the legs have been washed with Fungatrol Shampoo, scabs have been removed and the area dried thoroughly; massage the Fungatrol Cream over the infected area to create a waterproof barrier, which will also condition and protect the skin from bacteria and fungus.

Equine America Fungatrol Shampoo Equine America Fungatrol Shampoo protects the skin from bacteria. Washing with water and soap or water alone can strip the skin of its natural protective oils. Fungatrol Shampoo can be used to wash the whole horse or individual areas, protecting the skin from bacteria and fungus. This powerful lathering shampoo is a great start to the Fungatrol programme. For best results, leave on for 20 minutes before rinsing.

Nettex Muddy Marvel De-Scab This highly penetrative solution softens mud fever scabs so that horse owners can gently remove them and expose the micro-organisms that lie beneath. That way the horse avoids further pain and the condition can be treated effectively using other mud fever products from the range. Muddy Marvel De-Scab keeps underlying tissue damage to a minimum, too, which reduces the chances of reinfection. What’s more it contains cleansing properties to flush out wounds and allow immediate treatment and future prevention of this horrid condition.
www.nettexequine.com
Nettex Muddy Marvel Disinfect Nettex Muddy Marvel Disinfect is a powerful disinfectant that sanitises the bacteria that live underneath the surface of mud fever scabs. When the solution is applied to affected areas, bacteria are killed in seconds and the skin dries in no time allowing a preventative barrier cream to be applied. Tips for looking good this Winter Already the weather has turned and it is cold and dark at the stables, when you arrive after work. You know it is important to work your horse, but sometimes it is more tempting to have an evening off and keep warm at home. We have been looking at some products to make life a bit easier and a bit brighter this winter... Winter Fitness Lungeing can play an important role in keeping your horse ticking over during the cold, dark days of winter. A lot can be achieved in a couple of short sessions per week maintaining fitness, suppleness and improving balance. Endless trotting round on the forehand or leaning on side reins achieves little other than to compound old habits. Dr Hilary Bentley of EquiAmi says that lungeing, to be really effective, is best done with a lungeing aid that encourages a horse to step under from behind and work into a soft, light contact whilst lifting through their withers to develop balance and topline. A few minutes of warm up and stretching down at each end of the session is essential to prevent injury and stress on the joints. Using the middle ten minutes of the session to do some really effective work is the aim and frequent changes of rein and transitions help to keep the horse alert and interested. Polework can be included for variety and helps engagement. It is important to build up slowly and vary the routines as much as possible. The upside is that you spend less time freezing in the cold, getting wet or risking your neck on icy roads and emerge from the winter with an improved horse and a new found enthusiasm for a traditional training method that has been brought bang up to date by the very latest thinking.
Five Tips for Winter Back Care Chloe Bernard, Commercial Director of on-line retailer Shadow Horse, stockists of technical performance saddle pad brands Ogilvy Equestrian and Fleeceworks has five great tips for looking after your horse’s back this winter.
1
Remember that your horse can change shape during the winter months, so keep an eye on saddle-fit. Shadow Horse has a couple of very clever saddle pads; one in the Fleeceworks collection, which has sheepskin and also removable memory foam pads, and one in the Ogilvy Equestrian collection which can help bridge that gap.
2

skin problems. Chloe recommends washing your saddle pads regularly as well so dirt and grease do not build up and cause skin issues. The Ogilvy Equestrian saddlecloths have amazing breathable properties and help wick sweat away from your horse, so again helping to avoid winter skin problems.
3
Remember that during the winter months your horse’s back is either covered with rugs or saddlecloths 90% of the time, so thorough grooming before and after you ride is imperative to check for rubs, lumps and bumps or sores.
4
Wash any sweat Some horses, no matter how particular away after riding you are about cleaning saddlecloths, do suffer from skin issues, whilst others can become cold backed during the winter months. Merino Sheepskin saddle pads are a good investment, as they offer great breathability properties and also excellent cushioning against impact, whilst riding and are perfect for horses which have skin issues or are cold backed.
5
Finally, unless you are cutting down your schooling/exercise programme this winter, remember to book in to have your horse’s back and saddle checked. Follow these steps and your horse will have a happy and healthy back this season.

Clean Bed
As we head into autumn it is a good time to give your stable a thorough clean and decide which type of bedding is most suitable for your horse. As well as traditional straw, bedding can be made from many different products including hemp, rape and wood chips. The team at Localrider has been testing a range of different beddings and here we share the results... Nedz Advance Nedz Advance uses chopped straw that is ground and pressed into a pellet form. The pellets are treated to control moulds and spores and are capable or absorbing up to five times their own weight in liquid, providing the perfect bedding for overly dirty and wet horses. Nedz Advance is virtually dust free and expands as your horse is stabled on it – requiring no watering – providing the perfect bedding platforms on rubber or concrete stable floors. www.nedz.co.uk LR Comment: I tested the Nedz Aadvance bedding on rubber matting and the combination of the two meant my muck removal was halved. The bedding is dust free, highly absorbent and has very little odour, which is an asset to any yard.
BEDMAX BEDMAX is a virtually dust free, completely natural bedding with no additives and is the original shaving made specifically for bedding all stabled horses. Absorbent and extremely easy to use BEDMAX flakes are designed to produce a deeper more aerated bed, increasing drainage, and offering far more cushioning for the horse’s feet and joints. Made predominantly from British Pine, which has natural antiseptic properties, BEDMAX shavings are branded in distinctive 20kg yellow and green bags and available throughout the UK. www.bedmaxshavings.com LR Comment: When using Bedmax I was surprised how much was packed into each bale. Once a bed is laid it was easy to muck out as the very large shavings stick to the droppings, so you did not have to take too much out.
Verdo Horse Bedding This clever heat-treated wood pellet product, created for equine use is activated using a small amount of water and within approximately 20 minutes, you are ready to empty the open bags out onto the stable floor and create a soft fluffy and dry bed ready for your equine friend. Because the pellets are manufactured from 100% virgin soft wood and heat treated to eliminate pests and bacteria, you can rest assured that your horse is sleeping on only the best and it’s good to know that it also contains less than 1% dust, making it the ideal choice for those horses stabled for long periods of time during the winter months. When it comes to your pocket, compared to other products on the market, Verdo Horse Bedding can save you money and because the bedding comes in pellet form, this also means less storage is needed, allowing more room for stocking up on those other essentials such as hay and feed in case bad weather interrupts delivery. Other key factors include: less waste (the beds are quicker and easier to muck out and the muck heap breaks down quicker), pellets absorb up to three times their own weight in liquid (reducing ammonia and helping to keep your horse’s stable fresh and hooves dry) and their own established UK production plant which is open 364 days a year (no more worry about consistent quality or supply issues). www.verdohorsebedding.co.uk LR Comment: Once the Verdo Horse Bedding is set up we found mucking out became far easier than it is with traditional beddings. Verdo is very absorbent, it is easy to just quickly remove the damp patches and droppings, without unnecessarily wasting bedding. Less waste of course means less bedding to replace, making Verdo a very wallet friendly bedding solution.

Aubiose Aubiose is derived from the soft centre of the hemp plant, and is 100% natural. It is cultivated without pesticides, fungicides, herbicides or insecticides and is completely dust and spore free. Aubiose came out top in a laboratory test of water retention capacity, soaking up twice as much liquid as wood shavings and a third more than rape straw. This makes Aubiose a great bed for all horses - it is so absorbent that any wet is absorbed at the base of the bed and retained in a very small space, allowing it to be removed daily, weekly or kept as a deep litter bed. As the wet is retained at the base of the bed, it means the top layer stays soft, dry and warm allowing your horse to stand and lie on a perfect bed. For this reason, Aubiose is great for wet horses, those on box rest, or horses that are prone to thrush, as the wet material is never mixed in with the dry. Aubiose is also spongy by nature, helping reduce the chances of your horse treading through to the floor, and providing a supportive bed especially for those prone to laminitis. The absence of dust and spores also makes it a great bedding for horses prone to respiratory ailments.

BedSoft’s Trus-STEED treatment is also insect repellent and the lemon fresh fragrance helps to combat ammonia odours. www.bedsoft.co.uk LR Comment: Bedsoft is the nicest bedding I have used. it is a mixture of oil seed rape which is sprayed in lemon and sawdust so the bedding was very soft. It was an extremely economical bedding and it kept very dry. I will certainly keep using it.
Welcome back to winter
Grabbit, Drag it, Wash it... Rubber matting is a convenient and comfortable bedding option for equines but while horse owners may muck out regularly, the mats are often left in situ leaving an undesirable cocktail of bacteria and ammonia to fester underneath. Such actions are largely down to the cumbersome nature of rubber matting, which is why the award winning Grabbit Mat Mover is proving so popular. Ammonia is known to be damaging to the respiratory system as well as irritating the sensitive tissue around the eyes and in the nasal passages but good hygiene is also important for biosecurity and avoiding the spread of sickness and disease. The Grabbit clamps onto rubber matting to provide a handle that enables horse owners and stable staff to move bulky rubber mats quickly and easily with reduced effort and back strain. Once outside, the mats and stable floor can be hosed down or disinfected as required to help create a healthy and pleasant environment for horses and their owners or grooms. www.wefi.co.uk

LR Comment: You have to try this to believe it. For years I have struggled moving my mats, inching first one side then the other, propping things under the mats to gain a better grip. The Grabbit made it quick and simple. The mat just dragged out effortlessly.

Preparing for Winter The decision on whether to feed hay or haylage this winter and what ‘type’ of either of these to buy should be influenced by careful and honest consideration of what your horse needs. How hard is your horse really working? Making the correct decision here and perhaps approaching your winter feeding regime slightly differently could save you money by reducing hard-feed bills and keep your horse happier by encouraging natural feeding patterns.
T
he quality of both hay and haylage are primarily influenced the stage of growth at which the grass is cut and the conservation process.
What is haylage?
Haylage is generally conserved at an earlier stage of growth than hay, so there should be a higher proportion of leaf to stem. This usually makes haylage higher in energy and protein than most hays. After this nice sunny summer the grass will be high in sugar and in well fermented leafy haylage these sugars are fermented to lactic acid which preserves the grass and makes high quality feed. Simply looking at the amount of leaf to stem and smelling that slightly sweet vinegar smell should tell you that the crop has been well preserved. This is rich, nutrient dense haylage and most suitable for hard-working horses. If the pH is approx. 5.4 then the shelf-life of an opened bale should be 3 / 4 days. Haylage that cut from more mature grass has a high proportion of stem to leaf, is drier and is conserved simply by excluding (wrapping) the air. Generally a stemmy haylage is lower in energy and protein, with a similar nutrient content to hay and so is suitable to feed to less active horses. However, the draw-back with this haylage is that once opened the bacteria and mould grow rapidly (as the pH is higher at 6 / 7) and so the shelf-life is reduced to 2/3 days.
Fibre rich diet
Selective breeding has changed many characteristics of the horse but their digestive systems and feeding patterns have not altered. Horses should eat fibre for 16+ hours per day, so when choosing winter fodder you need to keep this in mind. To occupy a stabled horse, stemmy haylage and hay are more suitable for most horses as we want to try and promote ad lib feeding, while controlling body weight. Continual access to dry fodder introduces respirable dust (particles <5 um) into the environment particularly in the breathing zone of the horse and this can cause debilitating respiratory disorders.
Benefits of steaming
The well-recognised problem of dust in hay is traditionally tackled by soaking. However, recent research has shown that soaking, even for short periods can significantly increase the bacteria concentration so lowering the hygienic quality of the hay. Low quality hay is linked with colic, and as this is still the biggest cause of death of horses in UK it is best to find an alternative way of dealing with dust. One such alternative is steaming. Steaming fodder in a Haygain steamer (HG 1000, HG 600 and HG-GO) has been scientifically proven to reduce dust, moulds and bacteria by > 90%. Steaming forage, hay and haylage therefore deals with the respirable dust, the bacteria and moulds that cause deterioration of the fodder, so
not only is dust reduced but shelf-life is increased. This process allows one horse owners to feed haylage without worrying about ‘freshness’ or having to throw out unused feed after three days. It is very important to steam properly as partially heating and wetting the fodder in a home-made steamer has also been shown to actually increase bacteria concentrations (as with soaking) rather than reducing them. Thorough steaming making sure that steam penetrates all the hay and that temperatures reach in excess of 95oC for 10 minutes is necessary to ensure your fodder is low in dust and free from microbes. The only proven way of achieving this in both hay and haylage is to use a Haygain steamer. HAYGAIN hay steamers are scientifically proven to eliminate respirable dust, killing mould and bacteria in hay and haylage in approximately 50 minutes. Research has shown that soaking hay boosts bacteria growth in just 10 minutes by 1.5 times. A separate study compared the effectiveness of the specifically designed HAYGAIN with a homemade version, kettles of water and soaking and concluded the HAYGAIN was significantly more effective at reducing microbes in hay. HAYGAIN is currently available in three models: the HG-1000, HG-600 and HG-GO. Complete nutritional value and goodness are maintained with improved palatability.

The Importance of Feeding Fibre to Your Horse Why is fibre in the diet so important? We all know a high fibre, low concentrate diet is essential for our horse’s general maintenance and wellbeing, but do we know why?
T
he horse is designed to be a fibre digesting herbivore. In other words the majority of the digestive tract is devoted to fibre digestion, while only a small portion is designed to process starch from cereals, oils and proteins. So, it is clear to see just why fibre should therefore provide the basis to our horse’s diet. It is essential in maintaining healthy gut passage and keeping our horses naturally hydrated. Over winter in particular, limited turnout and poor grass quality means that your horse has to rely on adequate fibre rations. Furthermore, high fibre, low concentrate diets are not only good for the gut but also for the mind, having plenty of fibre to chew over will help to occupy and relieve boredom. Plus, the added bonus, digesting fibre helps your horse to produce heat in order to maintain body temperature and aid condition. The modern horse has remained, as his ancestors were - trickle feeders. This means they are designed to be eating fibre on a regular basis. Disruptions in this supply can lead to health related issues as the acid level in the stomach tends to increase resulting in gastric upset. This can cause severe discomfort for the horse, which may be noted by loose droppings, vices, irritability when handled and temperamental issues. Horses with loose droppings can also indicate that there is a lack of long fibre in the diet. So, you can see the importance of addressing the fibre factor content of the diet. To assist the benefits of fibre content, antacids can be fed. These will help to buffer any the acid build up and therefore also help the horse to feel much better on the inside.
How do you judge how much to feed your horse? When feeding your horse there are many important factors to take into account. These include feeding for workload, size, temperament and breed. Workload is a particularly important factor as many people assume if their horse is in hard work they need plenty of concentrate feed in order to make up for the energy burnt from their exercise regime. This can be true if the forage is poor and therefore providing a source of lowenergy. However feeding a quality balancer will help to provide the optimum requirements needed by our horses in their varied routines. A feed balancer will help to ensure your horse obtains the full value from his feed ration. As bulk is not ideal in any equine diet, a concentrated feed balancer that offers comprehensive vitamin, mineral and trace elements is the best option. Also look out for Pre and Pro Biotics as these are fast becoming a necessity in the daily equine diet - as the life of a domestic horse, in most cases, is an active one. This might be through travel, training and/or competitions, lack of turnout, or following a course of antibiotics, all can ill affect the good bacteria in the gut causing them to even potentially die off all together. This can cause a negative effect within the system as toxins are duly released into the blood stream and harmful bacteria may then proliferate. During this process the bacteria create by-products such as lactic acid, this too can cause gastric upset. Feeding pre and pro biotics will help to maintain and support the good bacteria in the gut and therefore enable

food to be processed more effectively. Electing to feed a daily balancer, not only enables you to feed smaller amounts, which is better and healthier for your horse, it also saves you money, plus, because the digestive process is optimised, your horse will maintain optimum condition. Recommended product: NAF Five Star OPTIMUM Feed Balancer OPTIMUM will restore and maintain five star condition, topline and health, maximise the nutritional value of the daily feed ration, and optimise the health and efficiency of the digestive system. Not only is it concentrated and easy to feed, OPTIMUM comes in a highly palatable pellet form. It is of the highest supplement specification and has a great sugar free flavour. OPTIMUM is formulated to complement either a high fibre low concentrate or performance diet. When a daily feed is not necessary, the great news is that OPTIMUM can be simply given on its own, direct from your hand. OPTIMUM, designed to optimise every horse’s diet from family pony to performance athlete, is the optimum choice for all.

Feeding for Fibre
The cold weather has arrived early this year and immediately I noticed my horse dropping weight. Whilst a good rug will help keep them warm, it is also important to keep them heated from the inside with plenty of Saracen Show Improver Pencils fibre. As the temperature drops the grass your horse to stay in top condition will stop growing and it will be necessary Prepare this winter – start the regime now with the Show Improver range from Saracen. to supplement your horse’s fibre intake With the onset of autumn, many with hay, haylage or other sources of fibre, owners start to worry about keeping condition on their horses. We have had which we take a look at here... an amazing British summer which means Rowen Barbary ReadyFibre Mash Made out of 100% high digestible fibre ReadyFibre Mash is ideal to use to help maintain the fibre levels in the diet. Taking just five minutes to soak to form a soft textured mash it is very palatable, and if you have a veteran that is starting to struggle to chew and digest the coarse fibres of hay ReadyFibre Mash can be used as a total hay replacer. With a very low starch and sugar content and no cereals ReadyFibre Mash is a very versatile product that is suitable for feeding to horses that suffer from laminitis and Cushing’s. www.rowenbarbary.co.uk
Fibre-Beet – The Super Fibre Conditioning Feed A Super Fibre conditioning feed, Fibre-Beet is a formulated blend containing all the benefits of the original Speedi-Beet product with added high quality Alfalfa for optimum condition, and to provide quality protein for muscle tone and function. Ideal for horses prone to digestive upsets and very palatable for fussy eaters, Fibre-Beet has added biotin for hoof quality and is approved by The Laminitis Trust. Fibre-Beet can also be used as a forage replacer (up to 60% of the daily forage allowance). Soaked and ready to feed in only 45 minutes in cold water, or 15 minutes in warm water. www.britishhorsefeeds.com
Equine America Everyday Vitamin & Mineral Supplement Equine America Everyday Vitamin & Mineral Supplement is a great value product. Previously known as Top Form it has had a revamp to provide even greater value, whilst still maintaining top product performance. Everyday Vitamins & Minerals is a complete supplement for all horses, containing top quality vitamins, minerals, pro-biotics and trace elements. Everyday Vitamins & Minerals is an easy to feed palatable pellet, which is ideal for both stable and field kept horses. www.equine-america.co.uk
that the hay we will have for the coming winter will not only be plentiful, but first signs are that it will also be good quality. This is great news as feeding plenty of quality forage is essential to keeping the horse’s digestive system in good working order. For owners who want to ensure their horse doesn’t begin to drop their condition this autumn/winter, a switch to Show Improver Pencils along with feeding a quality source of forage will have a positive effect. Show Improver Mix and Pencils are the ultimate in non-heating, conditioning feeds, whether for that extra condition for the sales or show ring, or to help put and keep condition on thin horses or poor doers, or for horses and ponies needing extra coat gloss. They are highly nutritious, energy dense rations formulated from a blend of quality ingredients containing a high level of calories provided by Saracen’s unique ‘Super-fibres’ and oils. In addition, a unique blend of EQUI-JEWEL®, a high fat stabilised rice bran, helps ensure that the digestive system is not over burdened with starch and delivers a high calorie ration in a slow release form. www.saracenhorsefeeds.com
TopChop Grass TopChop Grass is a blend of specially selected, dried, British grasses. It is ideal for horses and ponies needing a soft, very palatable chop, perfect for fussy feeders including fit performance horses and elderly horses. The formula for TopChop Grass was tested and developed at the Middle Park Equine Research Unit and has been approved by the nutritional team as suitable for all horses and ponies other than those prone to laminitis and those that need to lose weight TopChop Grass is a high quality chop that can be fed solely with a TopSpec feed balancer or supplement. Additional feed, for example a TopSpec Blend, can be added if extra nutrients for work or condition are required. It can be used as a hay replacer, especially for elderly horses struggling to maintain condition as a result of poor dentition reducing their ability to chew hay or haylage TopChop Grass is dust-extracted and the grass has been hightemperature dried. These two procedures minimise potential mould, making the chop suitable for horses and ponies with respiratory problems. Always dampen feed if your horse or pony has respiratory problems. www.topspec.com

Feed news Do you know that 70 to 100% of your horse’s diet should be provided by forage?
I
t stands to reason then, that your choice of forage should be the most important feed purchase you make and therefore of the best possible hygienic and nutritional quality possible. Horses have evolved to utilise a high fibre diet, using bacterial fermentation in a highly developed large intestine. Low levels of fibre, or poor quality fibre in the diet put horses at serious risk of problems such as colic and gastric ulcers. Leaving horses for long periods of time with nothing to eat can also lead to serious digestive and metabolic disturbances.
Weather dependent Decent forage is dependent upon the quality of the grass harvested and its dry matter at the time of baling, as weather conditions whilst it is being made will significantly affect the end quality. Most samples of hay contain unacceptably high levels of dust, mould and dust mites, together with their faeces! These can cause serious problems for your horse’s respiratory health. If left un-managed, dust exposure can often result in an allergic reaction which may lead to permanent respiratory problems such as RAO (Recurrent Airway Obstruction).
The problem with dust Freedom from dust and mould spores is probably more important than the nutritional value of forage. Hay is never 100% dust free and even soaking hay only removes some of the dust spores. It can sometimes minimise the levels of dust and mould, however it rarely eliminates all spores. In addition the nutrient value of soaked hay will be greatly reduced and once the hay begins to dry the spores will become airborne again.
Unlike hay, haylage is usually dust-free, but be sure to choose a brand which clearly states that it is dust-free to be totally certain. Ideally, rather than big-bale haylage, choose a bagged forage such a HorseHage, so that you know exactly what you’re feeding. HorseHage is bagged straight from the field to ensure there is no risk of mould or myco-toxins contained in the bag.
False economy Good forage at a reasonable price is a cost effective option. Poor hay at any price is a false economy. Top quality bagged forage from a well-established, reliable producer like HorseHage will have a high nutritional value as well as a full nutritional analysis and quality guarantee. It can be more expensive than hay, but the quality is consistent and there is no waste, plus the nutritional content is far better quality than hay. This means that you can often reduce the level of concentrates you feed. This can help reduce your overall feed bill! In addition, HorseHage produces four different varieties and has lower sugar levels (around 5%) than hay (around 10%). Both the High Fibre and Timothy varieties are safe to feed to laminitics, so there is an option to suit all types of horses and ponies. For more information on forage and advice on feeding your horse, please call the HorseHage Helpline on: 01803 527257 or visit www.horsehage.co.uk
other feed news Chestnut Horse Feeds Protein is extremely important to equine health as it is found in all tissues, hormones, enzymes and antibodies and plays a variety of crucial roles within the body. Protein itself is responsible for providing the building blocks for muscle growth, development and repair, and to some extent providing energy. Providing quality protein in the diet is vital for good health and the quality of the protein is dependent on the amino acids it includes. The body can synthesize some of these natural amino acids, whereas other sources need to be supplied through diet. One of the natural ways protein can be supplied through feed is using alfalfa. Alfalfa is part of the legume family and thus has the ability to glean nitrogen from the atmosphere, incorporating it into the plant. Using high quality alfalfa is important as the majority of the protein is found within the leaf. Alpha Plus from Chestnut Horse Feeds offers a digestible blend of quality alfalfa with naturally occurring protein, oil, cereals complete with a broad spectrum vitamin and mineral package. This comprehensive feed is ideal for horses and ponies in moderate to hard work and provides slow releasing energy, with protein and a relatively low starch content. www.chestnuthorsefeeds.co.uk
Keeping Calm on Bonfire Night Bonfire night and the surrounding period can be a cause for concern for horse owners. Finding out any information about displays in your area is the best way to plan ahead, so you know when the majority of the fireworks are going to be let off. You will need to decide whether your horse is going to be stabled for the night or left in the field. It
is recommended that your horse stays in its usual routine to prevent further stress, however if you know your horse will be happier in a stable or with greater freedom in the field then this is advisable. Unfortunately fireworks are not limited to 5th November and they can stretch out for a week or more either side of the date. Feeding a fast acting, highly absorbable liquid calmer, such as Blue Chip Karma is the perfect solution to keeping your horse or pony settled during this period. Even the most sensible horse or pony can become stressed and agitated, with the possibility of harming themselves or others. Horses are flight animals and their natural instinct is to flee from a stressful/frightening experience, unfortunately this can mean going through fences or over stable doors in an attempt to get away, even if this is not part of their normal behaviour. Blue Chip Karma is a highly palatable liquid based calmer that includes a superior form of water-soluble magnesium, L-tryptophan and Vitamin C. Karma is 100% natural and is safe to be fed to all horses, including competition horses, pregnant mares and foals. It is recommended to introduce Blue Chip Karma six days before fireworks start at a dose of 50ml per day, this can then be reduced to 25ml daily until fireworks have finished. For particularly stressy horses the dose can safely be kept at 50ml during the whole period and even increased to 100 ml on 5th November. If your horse or pony is usually quiet and settled, Blue Chip’s instant action calming syringes, CarrotCalm and AppleCalm are the ideal solution for peace of mind. Available in the highly palatable flavours carrot and apple, these syringes contain three ‘measures’ of the same active ingredients as Blue Chip Karma, in a concentrated form. It is recommended to give one measure an hour before fireworks are due to be set off, with an additional measure to be given if necessary. For more information on keeping your horses and ponies calm during the firework season visit www.bluechipfeed.com

Feed news Feeding The Veteran Every horse ages differently and whilst by definition they might be a veteran, the way age affects them will be very different. As winter approaches it is important to remember the one thing they all have in common is the need for a little more TLC. Here we look at some of the feeds and supplements specifically available to help your veteran through the colder months.
LitoVet® LitoVet®, from Lanes Health, is the only equine supplement in the UK that contains GOPO®, one of the main active components found in the Rosa Canina rosehip. GOPO® (glycoside of mono and diglycerol) has been shown to help to maintain, soundness, suppleness and mobility in equine joints and joint tissues. The patented process used in the production of LitoVet® ensures that the GOPO® and high levels of vitamin C are not depleted, thereby delivering support to the horse’s natural recovery processes helping to maintain soundness. LitoVet® is 100% plant-based and vegetarian. www.litovet.co.uk
Aloeride A pure organic aloe vera supplement, Aloeride not only helps promote a healthy, shiny coat, but also helps to support your veteran’s immune system, which can often become compromised with age. Ideal for veterans and those horses or ponies lacking lustre, Aloeride also helps support healthy skin, conditions hooves and aids rejuvenation and recovery too: all from one taste-free sachet a day. Either add the powder to your horse’s feed or for those that live in on thin air simply mix with a little water in a syringe and you have a supplement, which is cost effective and easy to feed. Each box of Aloeride® contains 30 sachets (30 days worth) equaling a whopping 12 litres of aloe vera juice. www.aloeride.co.uk
Lifeforce Focus from Alltech Keeping veteran horses and ponies in tip top condition can often be challenging and one of the largest issues facing our older equines is poor body condition. A major factor in maintaining body condition is a reduction of nutrient digestion and absorption often caused by deteriorating dentition as it becomes more difficult for veteran horses to chew long forage and release essential nutrients to maintain weight and also as horses age their digestive function declines. As it is impossible to improve the poor teeth of a veteran, what we can do is ensure the digestive system is functioning at its best to maximise fibre digestion. Lifeforce Focus form Alltech, the experts in equine digestive health, is a supplement specially designed for less active horses and those that spend a lot of time grazing, working to provide preventative care for companion horses. Lifeforce Focus will help stimulate fibre digestion and help improve overall immune function. Containing all natural ingredients it creates an ideal digestive environment which allows good bacteria to work most effectively throughout the gut helping to prevent digestive upsets. It also addresses challenges related to weight loss and body condition and provides organic trace minerals that are more easily absorbed and maintained. www.lifeforcehorse.com
NAF In the Pink Senior In The Pink Senior is especially formulated to meet all the nutritional requirements of your older horse and is designed to give him all the support he needs to say forever young. Make In The Pink Senior part of your older horse’s daily diet and, by addressing the natural aging process of the body’s systems, it will help keep him in tip top condition both inside and out. In The Pink Senior will help balance the diet and the digestive system, to enable your horse maximise the value of his feed intake. It provide spre and pro biotics for optimum support of the gut and will donate all the vitamins and minerals required by the older horse for all round health. It supplies a unique combination of naturally sourced antioxidant ingredients to flush excess toxins from the system. As well as providing nutrients to support joint health. In The Pink Senior is recommended for all older horses and ponies, whether signs of age are obvious or not. It is designed to allow you and your best friend enjoy ‘the good old days’ together. www.naf-equine.eu/uk
TopSpec Senior Feed Balancer TopSpec Senior Feed Balancer is a very palatable non-heating feed that contains several supplements including the levels of micronutrients and digestive aids normally only found in high quality specialised supplements. Of particular importance to elderly horses is the inclusion of micronutrients known to help maintain mobility. The scientifically recommended rate of 10grams of glucosamine/500kg horse/day is a key feature of the mobility supplement included in this formula. This superb specification allows elderly horses to utilise far more nutrients from the forage and straights in their diet, which often means that their hard feed intake can be reduced with many resulting benefits. Using TopSpec Senior Feed Balancer will help to maintain mobility and also promote muscle development and topline, which often starts to decline as horses’ age. Feeding it will help to maintain good hoof quality and promote a supple skin with a shiny coat. TopSpec Senior Feed Balancer helps to maintain a healthy immune system and also includes a highly available source of vitamin C to help maintain healthy lung tissue. Feeding it may also lead to a calmer temperament in stressed horses and ponies. If additional calories are required TopSpec Senior Feed Balancer is designed to be fed with TopSpec CoolCondition Cubes or a limited amount of TopSpec Super Conditioning Flakes. It can also be fed with your choice of straights e.g. sugar beet pulp, or with compound feed. www.topspec.com
Blue Chip Pro Blue Chip Pro is perfect for veteran horses that need to maintain or gain condition. Blue Chip Pro contains a probiotic yeast, which increases fibre digestion and allows your veteran to utilise the fibre in his diet more efficiently. The prebiotic in Blue Chip Pro will help to boost their immune system and remove pathogenic bacteria from the foregut. Pro also contains a comprehensive hoof supplement with biotin, lysine and zinc; a respiratory supplement that contains garlic, eucalyptus and menthol and an elevated levels of vitamins, minerals and nutrients to meet your veteran horse’s daily requirements. All Blue Chip balancers are whole-cereal and molasses free and contain a natural, fruit derived form of Vitamin E, which is a highly powerful antioxidant. The small pellets of Blue Chip balancers make it easier for older horses to eat and it can be fed by hand if necessary or could be made into a tempting mash by the addition of warm water. Pro contains high quality protein to provide the necessary amino acids, vital for maintaining muscle mass which can often be a problem for the older horse. Some veterans hold their weight well or can be prone to laminitis, so consider feeding them a low starch, low sugar; low calorie feed balancer such as Blue Chip Lami-light. Lami-light contains the beneficial nucleotides, fruit derived form of Vitamin E and essential vitamins, minerals and nutrients your veteran requires whilst not encouraging any weight gain. www.bluechipfeed.com
