Welcome 30 W
hat an amazing month for local riders at the top of the sport. Gemma Tattersall and Arctic Soul finished fifth at Burghley, Francis Whittington and Easy Target won Blenheim and at WEG there were too many local riders competing to mention here. However, if you turn to page 30 you will find pictures of most of them in action. I was particularly proud to be supporting the Reining Team who are all based in Sussex. If you haven’t watched Reining before I would highly recommend it, it is colourful, it is noisy and above all great fun. Amongst the medals and celebrations at WEG there was great sadness when Harry Meade lost his wonderful cross country horse, Wild Lone. We have been big fans of the combination and it was moving to watch Zara put a caring arm around Harry when the medals were presented. As Harry said: “What better way is there to remember such a special horse than winning a medal in his memory.” It is the season for Championships and in the spotlight this month we feature Meredith Baker who was part of a two man Young Rider team at the European Trec Championships in Italy this summer. Turn to page 18 to read more about Meredith and her wonderfully versatile Criollo, Miz. This issue is also packed full of news, reports and pictures from around the region and as usual we seem to have nearly every discipline and activity featured from Pony Club Camp to driving. As we go to print we are looking forward to the Sunshine Tour Championships at the end of September. We have been involved with the Great Bookham based event for too many years to remember and always love chatting to the riders who have qualified. The full report will be featured in the November issue. We love hearing your news and stories and if you have a good picture we would love to see it, just email fiona@localrider.co.uk. Have fun!

Joules celebrates 25 years Joules turned 25 in September and to celebrate, the iconic brand has launched an exclusive Joules Jubilee Collection. 25 years ago Tom Joule began selling clothes at leading outdoor and equestrian events. Tom knew his customers were a bright and colourful bunch, but their clothing was quite the contrary, dull greens & bland browns and navy. So Tom designed a collection of bright bold clothing, including the famous Joules wellies. They sold like hot cakes and Joules was born! Today as Britain’s best-loved family lifestyle brand, Joules delights in making clothing, accessories and homewares more exciting by turning the ordinary into the extraordinary. Their iconic colours, hand-drawn prints, statement details and humorous touches can be found in over 85 Joules shops, at leading stockists such as John Lewis, Selfridges, leading US department store, Nordstorm and at Joules.com. With an ever growing fan base around the world and a rapidly expanding collection to boost, the future is certainly looking colourful for Joules.
Charity horse makes it to the World Equestrian Games A rehomed horse from international horse charity, World Horse Welfare, made it to the World Equestrian Games (WEG) this year and finished 11th out of 28 competitors in the Pas-de-deux section of the vaulting competition. Before coming to one of the charity’s four Rescue and Rehoming Centres across the UK, Belwade Farm in Scotland, in 2002, World Horse Welfare Islay (known as Ali by his rehomer) had previously served in the police force for a short time. Unfortunately, Islay didn’t take well to the environment and was soon deemed not suitable for duty.
Islay and Canadian sisters, Jeanine and Angelique Van der Sluijs, competing at the CHIO in Aachen
When World Horse Welfare has the space – which sadly has been a rare event over the last few years due to the volume of welfare concerns - the charity is able to take in rehabilitation horses. In Islay’s case, he met the criteria which meant that he could be taken on by the charity as a rehabilitation horse.
After World Horse Welfare grooms had spent a significant period of time with 17.3hh Hunter, Islay, working on his fitness during his rehabilitation programme – and after discussions with an interested and experienced rehomer – it was thought that Islay had the potential to become a vaulting horse. Once rehomed by his current rehomer, Liz Mackay, 12 years ago, Islay never looked back. Liz tells the tale of Islay’s rise to WEG: “I have been vaulting for 21 years and when I heard about Islay I thought he’d make the perfect horse for me to train with. He has been to several championships as part of team GBR since 2006. I responded to a request for horse power from Canadian vaulters who had qualified, but could not bring their own horse. They came to train on him for ten days in June prior to competing in the CHIO, an international horse show in Aachen, Germany, and decided that he was the horse they wanted to take to WEG. They returned three weeks before WEG to stay with me and train on Islay.” If you think you can rehome a World Horse Welfare horse then please visit the charity’s rehoming section of its website here: www.worldhorsewelfare.org/rehoming
Are your feet Hoof Proof? Every rider is exposed to being trodden on by a horse and when they are it can be extremely painful and it can take weeks to heal. More people are injured by being trodden on than any other type of accident with horses and that is why it makes good sense to wear toe protective riding boots. Equitector offers a full range of long and short, riding and yards boots that meet the independently tested EN ISO 20346 for safety. The toe cap is completely concealed and cannot be seen or felt. Whilst wearing the boots you would not even know it is there, but when you get trodden on you will appreciate it. Tel 0208 0904029 or visit www.equitector.com

re you interested in Pony Racing? Then come along to Lingfield Park Racecourse on Tuesday 28th October at 10.30am to find out everything you have ever wanted to know. The aim of the Get the Pony Racing Buzz morning is to give children (and their parents) an introduction to pony racing. There will be an opportunity to ride an equicisor (a mechanical horse) under the instruction of a British Horseracing Authority qualified Jockey Coach. This teaches children how to ride short, how to ‘bridge’ their reins and how fit they need to be to ride racing. There will also be a session with space hoppers and wobble boards, teaching the children about balance and core fitness which is so important for riding generally, but crucial for race riding. In addition to this there will be a demonstration how to tack up a pony with racing tack and information on the rider’s equipment required for pony racing. There will also be a behind the scenes tour of the racecourse including the weighing room and jockeys changing rooms. The Get the Pony Racing Buzz morning starts at 10.30 am and is free to all, but places need to be reserved with the Pony Racing Authority: ponyracingauthority@thejockeyclub.co.uk or 01584 823783. The morning is open to all, whether you own a pony or not, whether you are racing in the afternoon or not! The Champion Headwear Pony Club Pony Racing starts at 12 pm with six fantastic pony races. This is open to all Pony Club members who have attended two working rallies during the year. (see www.pcuk.org for further information).
Does your equine practice deserve a Petplan Veterinary Award?
Dujardin is now the reigning, Olympic, European and World Champion. This is the first time a British rider has simultaneously held these three titles. Charlotte returned from Normandy with team silver and two individual gold medals. Chris Jacobi, General Manager, Equine Division at Absorbine said: “We are pleased to support Charlotte Dujardin’s continued success. Even more than her accomplishments, it is her determination, ambition, and unconditional love for a horse that we truly admire.” Charlotte Dujardin is a passionate advocate of Absorbine products, and is grateful for the brand’s support. “I am thrilled at this new partnership with Absorbine. I am a strong believer in their products, and it means a lot to have a trusted brand standing behind me,” says Dujardin. “The best riders start with a horse that looks and feels his best, and Absorbine products help me achieve that.” www.absorbine.co.uk

A recent survey conducted by the UK’s largest pet insurer, Petplan and its specialist sister brand Petplan Equine confirms that Britain’s pets are seen as members of the family and, when they’re ill or injured, their owners place their trust in the fourth emergency service, their vets.
Horse owner, Tracy Pettifer whose Highland Pony Sunny recently required emergency colic surgery said: “I will be nominating my vet Lizzie for a Petplan Veterinary Award, not only for what she did to save Sunny, but also for giving me so much support throughout my previous pony’s illness. She even sent me a condolence card after the pony died. It meant so much knowing that she genuinely cares for all her patients. She truly is a fantastic and talented vet.”

and know first hand how important the dedication and advice of vets is to our customers,” said Charlotte Collyer, Senior Marketing Executive at Petplan Equine. “So if you are fortunate enough to have a vet who is willing to ‘go that extra mile’ this is your chance to say thank you and show them how much you appreciate their support and commitment.” Petplan Equine is asking all horse owners who value their vet, veterinary practice or a member of their team to say thank you by nominating them for the 2015 Petplan Veterinary Award by visiting www. petplanequine.co.uk/vetawards before 16th January 2014.

Mirrors for Training sponsors event rider Sam Griffiths Mirrors for Training has sponsored Badminton Horse Trials winner, Sam Griffiths. “We’re delighted to be working with Sam,” says Andrea Miles from Mirrors for Training. “We have a passion for eventing, so we’ve been aware of Sam, his great results and his horses for many years. When the opportunity arose for us to support him, we were pleased to be able to help. We can’t wait to see how Sam and his team perform throughout the rest of the season and hope that our mirrors will help Sam stay at the top of his game for many seasons to come.” Sam has had a number of Mirrors for Training’s non-warp arena mirrors installed horizontally in his outdoor arena. Made with Pilkington Opti-Mirror for exceptional clarity and mounted on galvanised steel frames to stop warping, the mirrors will provide Sam and his team with an exceptional training aid for many years. “Training without the benefit of mirrors can be an uphill struggle; it is my belief that since we have had our mirrors installed, all our team of horses, working pupils and even when lunging, we have been able to see massive improvements in the horses’ way of going and position of rider,” says Sam. www.mirrorsfortraining.co.uk

his year a locally based company, Stream Z Global, launched a new product for the equestrian community. EQU StreamZ are small fetlock bands, which improve natural Harriet recovery and offer non-intrusive pain Upton relief to horses. As an introduction into the market, the company sponsored the South East U21 Eventers League. One of the riders within this category is Harriet Upton. Her horse, Danny, competed at the London Olympics. Harriet said: “Danny is 14-yearsold with some miles on the clock, so managing his health is vitally important and that is where the bands came in. The EQU bands have been vital in helping Danny recover after competing. We noticed a greater level of mobility after wearing the bands and that his energy levels were noticeably higher.” After a fantastic year Harriet was selected as one of 12 junior riders to compete for Team GB at the European Championships. Due to the success of the bands StreamZ now supports 10 members of the junior GB eventing squad, including gold medallist, Anna Wilks. Time to TREC
FEATURE
By George Gorman of www.rstor.co.uk
Have you thought about trying TREC with your horse? The discipline helps develop the skills horse and rider need while hacking, and includes orienteering, negotiating obstacles and basic flatwork. Here is an overview of this fun discipline:
T
REC has three main elements - orienteering on horseback (POR), control of paces (CoP) and cross-country/obstacle course (PTV). Overseen in the UK as of October 1st by TREC GB, the sport’s governing body, competitions are run at four levels, catering for beginners through to those at international level. Riders can compete individually or in pairs. TREC started in France under its French name, Technique de Randonee Equestre de Competition, and was introduced to the UK in 1998 by the British Horse Society (BHS). TREC is an ideal family sport and is very inclusive - western and side saddle riders can compete alongside traditional English style riders, and horses may be bitted or bitless, shod or unshod. Natural horsemanship skills are encouraged. The full TREC League runs from March to October and comprises all three elements described above, while the indoor winter series that runs from October to March includes control of paces (CoP) and a cross-country/obstacle course (PTV). There are four levels of ‘full blown’ TREC competition, with Level One being the simplest, and Level Four the most challenging. Level One is suitable for beginners. Riders can typically expect to be out for around two to three hours on the orienteering on horseback (POR) section, and the cross-country/obstacle course (PTV) course may include jumping obstacles of up to 2 feet (60cm) in height. In Level Two, the POR route is up to 20kms long - it is suitable for novices but expects more developed map reading skills than Level One; the PTV course can include obstacles up to 2’4 (70cm) in height. Level Three has a POR route up to 32kms long, and competitors can expect PTV obstacles up to 2’8 (80cm) in height. Level Four has a POR route up to 40kms long and a PTV course that includes jumps up to 3’ (90cm). Many centres also offer ‘Versatile TREC’ contests over the autumn and winter months, in which the orienteering on horseback (POR) phase is replaced by an obedience test, to be performed in a 20m x 40m dressage arena, and marked on accuracy and obedience of transitions. Notably, Bramble Hill Farm in Slinfold, West Sussex, holds these ‘Versatile TREC’ events. Visit www.bramblehillfarm.co.uk
TREC GB, the riding discipline’s governing body, has appointed the RS-tor rider safety aid as sponsor of its prestigious winter series of indoor TREC competitions; the RS tor Rider Safety Aid TREC GB Winter League runs nationwide from October 1st until March 31st. The RS-tor rider safety aid is ideal for TREC enthusiasts - it boosts stability in the saddle and reduces the velocity of the rider’s movement if they become unseated, potentially preventing a fall, or allowing a safer or more controlled fall. It is very useful when dismounting, as the rider can help lower themselves down from the horse. Visit www.rstor.co.uk for info. Visit http://www.setrec.org.uk for South East-based activities, or the governing body’s website http://www.trecgb.com for details on the discipline.

Equipment for TREC
1 2 3
Protective headwear must be worn that meets current standards, and carries the assurance stamp of Kitemark or SEI.
4 5
For the POR phase, fluorescent/reflective high-viz clothing is required.
Personal IDs and medical armbands are a minimum requirement for all stages, as is ID on the horse.
Safe and appropriate clothing and footwear is recommended. Footwear with a tread sole worn with half chaps is often deemed more suitable than conventional riding boots, as there can be frequent dismounting and leading!
For the PTV phase - a body protector is required. This is also required in competitions when fixed obstacles form part of the course. (E.g. cross country fences, steps, ditches etc).
6
A compass, pens for map marking, a torch, first aid equipment, a whistle for use in emergencies, a headcollar and leadrope or combination bridle, are also recommended. OCTOBER 2014 Localrider 11

hen Gemma Tattersall and Arctic Soul jumped a double clear round at the recent Burghley Horse Trial to finish in fifth place behind the best of the Brits - William Fox-Pitt, it put behind them the demons of the last year. Regular readers will remember our appeal back in December 2013 for potential new owners to come forward who could help Gemma to secure the ride on Arctic Soul, as the horse’s owner wished to sell him. Gemma took over the ride on the now 11-year-old Arctic Soul, who was previously competed by Nicky Roncoroni, at the end of 2011. 2012 saw them progress from Novice to CCI*** amassing some fantastic results on the way. Their partnership and results caught the selectors’ eyes and the combination are now part of the British Eventing Elite squad. A consolidation of their form saw them selected for the Reserve list for the European Championships in 2013 and for the recent World Equestrian Games.
WEG Test Event Gemma and Arctic Soul had represented Great Britain at the test event at Le Pin au Haras in August last year, finishing in a strong ninth place. From there they headed to Blenheim Horse Trials, where they finished best of the Brits in fourth place. It was after this fabulous result that Arctic Soul’s owner confirmed he wanted to sell the horse. Gemma’s PA, Elodie Frost spear-headed a campaign to secure Spike (Arctic Soul’s stable name), which brought together a collection of people who formed the Soul Syndicate.
Frustrating Badminton Badminton 2014 will always be remembered for its extraordinary cross country day, which saw very few combinations finish the course. Gemma Tattersall and Arctic Soul cruised around the course and in theory finished with plenty of running. However, it is a
The week after the Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials there was a buzz about the British girl, who just kept smiling. That girl is local and she is called Gemma Tattersall and we share her story with you. rule of cross country that the horse’s shoulder must pass through the flags and unknowingly Gemma and Arctic Soul faltered in Huntsman’s Close and was eliminated. Gemma said: “We flew round a very tough cross country course and Spike made it feel easy (something which the scoreboard showed it was not). Just before the final fence when I should have been elated, I heard over the tannoy that I had been eliminated. In Huntsman’s close I had been judged to be the wrong side of a flag. Having thought I was within the flags I continued and not re-presented hence elimination. I can’t describe the feelings I had. Totally gutted. For me, the horse and my whole team. So much work and such a great round only to end up with a big fat E on the scoreboard.
Picking up the pieces Many tears and a small period of hibernation later we all had to dust ourselves off and start again. Re-routing to Bramham CIC*** was a tricky decision as technically Spike had gone the whole way round at Badminton so deserved a holiday, but off we went. It turned out to be a good decision as we finished fifth, a good solid result and the horse was fit and happy. A trip to Gatcombe for the Open Championships saw another class performance from Spike where we finished eighth in some very good company. We had hoped to be selected for WEG and we were named reserve, but it was not to be this year so off we went to Burghley (the second big B of the year!).” The Soul Syndicate were out in force supporting Gemma and Spike at Burghley and their commitment and generosity in supporting the partnership was rewarded as the pair jumped a double clear to finish in fifth place behind the best of the British Riders, William Fox-Pitt.

The most amazing round of my life Gemma said: “Cross country day brought the usual nerves, but also I was feeling the pressure. I really needed to go well here. It was one of the most amazing rounds of my life. Spike is such a fantastic cross country horse, he made it feel great and to cross that finish line with no jumping penalties was so much needed by me and all of my team. We finished the day in eighth place, very happy. The Sunday morning trot up is always nerve wracking even when you know your horse is fine. Spike left no doubt as he towed me through it. It was then a long wait until the show jumping in the afternoon session. Watching in the morning it seemed to be jumping well but again Spike struggles with the atmosphere and I was worried that he would get tense and make mistakes. I need not have worried. He rose to the occasion and jumped the most superb clear round. I couldn’t believe it. Double clear at Burghley. I cantered out of the arena to the tears and smiles of my team and was then thrust in front of a microphone and Clare Balding! Struggling to compose myself I think I spent the whole interview grinning like the Cheshire cat! I finished in fifth place behind some of the best rider/horse combinations in the world. My best result to date and definitely a good week at the office.”

Shares available in the Soul Syndicate I also know (for certain now) that Arctic Soul is a true four star horse and I sincerely hope that we can continue our form and get on the Team for next year’s European Championships. If anyone is interested in becoming an Arctic Soul groupie and sharing in the excitement there are still shares available in the syndicate. It is not as expensive as you may think and I have been assured by the current members (over a glass or two of celebratory champagne) that it has been money well spent! The cold-backed horse may arch the back or feel tense until he has warmed up
O
ur equine athletes, whether they are competing, schooling or training, all work incredibly hard. The end of the summer does not mean the end of the competitive season, with many riders out in full force at Dressage and Show Jumping competitions over the autumn and winter months. We all want to succeed in the ring, whatever discipline we take part in, but the most important factor is our horse’s comfort and well being. Only too often, the hidden factor holding some of our equines back from ultimate ridden success is back pain - which in some cases can be specifically identified in horses which are ‘cold backed’.
What does cold-backed mean?
The term ‘cold-backed’ is used to describe a horse displaying a spectrum of symptoms of a sensitive or painful back. These behaviours can range from discomfort when the girth is tightened, dipping away from the saddle pressure, arching the back, or more serious behaviours such as bucking, or poor performance until the horse has warmed up. A horse classed as cold-backed will often Always mount the show symptoms when the saddle is put on, cold backed horse when mounted and when walking the first sympathetically, and few steps, but will then work normally as consider staying off his the affected muscles warm up and become back where possible, accustomed to the pressure of the saddle/rider. while he warms up This can lead to people think that symptoms of a cold back represent their horse’s normal reaction to tacking up or mounting – but the majority of veterinarians and physiotherapists would dispute this! All horses are individuals and some are more sensitive than others, but the acute reaction seen in cold-backed horses has been cited to be caused by stimulation of sensitive nerve endings due to pressure from the saddle, or stretching of immobile or injured tissue.
How sheepskin could help cold-backed horses By Stephen Biddlecombe of www.worldwidetack.com
In addition, sheepskin warms up and cools down, thermo regulating more effectively than other materials. This reduces temperature fluctuations in the muscles of our equines’ backs, which in turn reduces the risk of injury.
Our favourite sheepskin products A range of sheepskin numnahs and saddlecloths is available from World Wide Tack, visit the website at www.worldwidetack.com or tel: 01825 841 303 to see the range. We like the Stephens Gel-Eze Sheepskin Pad, RRP £76.50 exc VAT, it combines all the features of the best selling half pad with the additional benefits of Gel-Eze. It has Gel-eze comfort cushions on the shoulder and under the point of the saddle tree, and comes in either Natural, Black or Navy Sheepskin, in sizes S, M and L. (Size small in black/natural is currently on offer at just £45.90.)
The Stephens Gel-Eze Sheepskin Pad features Gel-eze comfort cushions
Prevention is better than cure
Prevention is always better than cure, and limiting ‘cold backed behaviour’ or back pain utilising effective and correct training methods is essential, in order to ensure your equine is working in a correct outline and using his body in the right way. In addition, it is vital to ensure that your tack fits your horse comfortably and correctly. Always ensure the saddle is in balance and where suitable, use a supportive saddle pad to absorb concussion. We all know that keeping warm and comfortable often reduces our own risk of injury, muscle stiffness or discomfort, so why would it be any different for the horse? In autumn after clipping, our horses’ skin often becomes more sensitive, so keeping horses comfortable becomes even more essential!
Natural sheepskin
Natural sheepskin is considered one of the highest performing materials, and is ideal for the autumn and winter months. Sheepskin is highly breathable, composed of a mass of softly curled fibres that can hold many microscopic air pockets, allowing air to circulate and water vapour to be released. As well as allowing water to evaporate, sheepskin draws water and sweat away from our equines’ backs. Sheepskin wool is able to hold 30% of its own weight in moisture before it begins to feel damp, maximising comfort. OCTOBER 2014 Localrider 29

FEATURE Choosing a ‘dressage legal’ bit can seem like a minefield
Bitting families
By Lucy Nicholas of The Saddlery Shop ‘Dressage legal’ bits
This horse is ridden by Gary Parsonage in a Continental Gag
Working backwards
In fact, a better, more holistic solution if you can’t find your ideal ‘dressage legal’ bit is to work backwards from the non-dressage legal bit your horse is most comfortable with, and use this mouthpiece (not necessarily the cheek pieces or bit rings, as these relate to your communication with the horse) as your bitting blueprint. Utilising the services of a bitting expert and possibly a bit-hire service, work out what mouthpiece your horse is comfortable with and choose a snaffle with this mouthpiece for everyday riding and training. There may not be a perfect dressage legal bit for you, but even if you compete in dressage three or four times a month, that’s perhaps just four or five hours a month that your horse will use the dressage legal bit. The other 15-20 hours a month that you are riding, can be in a bit that is perfect! You can now choose a dressage legal bit that is as close to your ‘ideal’ as possible; a close relative of your ‘ideal’ bit. My theory is that if the horse spends most of his working life in a bit he’s happy with, he’s more likely to work in a relaxed manner when competing in his dressage legal bit, providing it is from the same ‘family’.
Credit: Sam Lamb
A range of snaffle bits with differing mouth and cheek pieces is permitted This Continental Gag with a French link centre within British would work well for XC, Dressage affiliated along with a French link tests, but not all snaffle for dressage horses perform well in these bits common problems are leaning, ‘fiddling’ with the mouth or tongue, and pulling. Many of us that enjoy different riding disciplines take the welltrodden route of choosing a bit with ‘brakes’ for jumping - maybe some kind of gag, or a Pelham - and plump for a basic snaffle that we know ‘will do’ for dressage. (Despite the fact that our selected bits for the two disciplines are invariably completely different.) Worse, we hack, school and train in our ‘That Will Do’ snaffle, knowing we will need to compete in it, so we may as well ‘get used to it’, when it isn’t perfect for our horse.
All about our expert The Saddlery Shop, as you’d expect from one of the country’s largest online tack retailers, stocks a wide range of bits including Neue Schule, Myler and Sprenger. Co-proprietor Lucy Nicholas’ bitting knowledge is widely known within the equestrian industry. “In most cases, I can successfully ‘remotely’ bit a horse; the key is knowing common types of mouth conformation, behaviour of the different equine breeds, plus taking into account any conformational abnormalities or injuries the horse may have,” Lucy says.
Selecting the jumping bit
Now when you select what many people consider to be a ‘stronger’ bit for jumping and cross country, you can again work from your ‘blueprint’ bit. As an example, ‘associated’ bits for dressage and cross country would be a French link, sometimes with hanging cheek, for the dressage, with a Waterford (perhaps again with hanging cheek), for the jumping. (A different option for cross country would be the Continental Gag with a French link centre for the cross country, so you have the same mouthpiece with a bit of extra poll pressure in the Continental.) This way, the mouthpieces are either the same, or ‘related’ in their action. In these examples, neither of the cross country bits have a nutcracker action, and both will break across the tongue, (the Waterford more so) and thus help to prevent leaning. I think it may be comforting for readers to know that not all horses will go well in a dressage legal bit, and that sometimes you have to work backwards to one! Plus, it is important to note that when looking for a ‘stronger’ bit, we should try to keep the mouthpiece the same or similar if the horse is very settled in the current / milder bit - this will help aid a smooth transition to the stronger bit. Ten Top Tips for Preventing Mud Fever from Robinson Animal Healthcare
✔ Management – most winter skin conditions result from a dirty coat which provides the ideal environment for bacteria and fungi to thrive. Keep coats as clean and as dry as possible with suitable rugs or shelter and regular grooming. ✔ Hygiene - rugs, tack, grooming and stable equipment can spread contagious skin conditions or repeatedly re-infect the same horse unless you eliminate infectious agents by disinfection and cleaning (veterinary surgeons can advise on suitable products that will not harm your horse). ✔ Correct Nutrition – poor diets, especially those lacking in essential vitamins and minerals, can have dire effects on the skin health. Consult an equine nutritionist if you suspect current dietary intake is not aiding a healthy skin and coat.
Sometimes it is impossible to avoid the mud, but with the following useful tips hopefully you can prevent your horse from getting Mud Fever.
✔ Vigilance – check horses daily for signs that a skin condition may be imminent. Thick winter coats can easily mask problems such as mud fever, rain scald, ringworm and lice. ✔ Prevention – if it is known that an individual horse is prone to certain winter skin conditions then preventative measure should be taken. For example, horses prone to mud fever may benefit from a barrier cream or regular treatments with an antibacterial cleansing wash such as Activ Wash. ✔ Clipping and Trimming – it may help to trim or clip horses coats during winter to make them easier to keep clean and dry. Skin problems will often be more evident when coats are clipped and horses in work will be more comfortable as they will sweat less and dry off quicker. ✔ Treatment – a skin condition must be correctly identified in order for treatment to be as effective as possible. If you are in any doubt or if the condition has appeared for the first time always seek advice from your veterinary surgeon. ✔ Washing – continually washing and bathing horses can weaken the skin structure removing essential oils. This can lead to the skin becoming chapped and sore and irritated by particles of soil, leaving it more susceptible to infection. Avoid excessive bathing during winter; grooming will remove dirt and scurf without stripping the coat of its natural oils. ✔ Products - anti-bacterial washes can be used prophylactically on susceptible animals or to treat existing skin conditions caused by bacterium. They will help to remove any encrusted debris such as scabs. ✔ Healing - removing scabs carefully using an anti-bacterial cleansing wash (if bacterium is the causative organism) will remove any existing bacteria and dirt held in the scabs allowing new clean scabs to form and heal. It is very important that any sponges that are used in the washing process are clean and that the area washed is rinsed well with clean water and then dried thoroughly.
Anti-bacterial washes such as Activ Wash can be used to clean your horse’s legs.

This three layer fabric has two thermal outer knitted layers, sandwiching a layer of cushioning polyproplylene fibres. Warmwick Leg Wraps are ideal for keeping the legs warm. The superb wicking properties help dry wet legs and make them ideal to help prevent mud fever. They have wide velcro straps over the whole length of the wraps to spread pressure and give gentle compression and the web down strips giving strength and durability to the wraps. Available in sets of four they are also available with magnets for magnetic therapy.

Equi-Med Ag Stable Boots Is your horse or pony prone to bacterial infections such as mud fever or cracked heels during winter? Give bacteria the boot with the Equi-Med Ag Antibacterial Stable Boots. Like no other product on the market, the patented Equi-Med Antibacterial Stable Boots have been designed with an advanced dual action combining activated carbon and silver in the fabric. The activated carbon draws bacteria out of the infected area into the fabric, whilst the silver works to eliminate bacteria. The boots are ideal to use on knocks, scrapes or cuts to help reduce the risk of infection and any post exercise swelling. Designed for indoor use, the boots can simply be applied to clean legs when the horse is stabled. This should allow for regular turnout during the day as normal. The boots have a comfortable and breathable design, which allows the fabric to get as close as possible to the skin without restricting movement. The boots can be machine washed as per instructions and any grease or dirt can simply be brushed away with a body brush for day to day cleaning. In a recent study by Equi-Med Ag and veterinary consultant Cedric Chan, antimicrobial testing showed 99% of cases that were randomly chosen from around the UK were caused by Staphylococcus Aureus and the bacterial infection was successfully treated using the Equi-Med Ag range. In severe cases always consult your veterinary surgeon.

he second Iberian Performance Show took place over the August Bank Holiday weekend. The show saw over 70 Iberian horses (Spanish and Portuguese Lusitanos) take part in a range of dressage, riding and traditional dress classes. This show only features ridden classes and saw entrants travelling from Surrey, Sussex, Kent and more distant regions including the New Forest, Northampton, Lancashire and Somerset to compete at the show. There were two invited judges, from Portugal, Joao Quintas, a senior rider from The Portuguese School of Equestrian Art, who judged the Lusitanos, and from Spain, Juan Rubio, who judged the Spanish horses. Juan, a senior rider/instructor from The Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art last visited England when the Royal School’s gave displays at Olympia in December 2013. Sarah Lanning, Jane Hudson and Richard Chamberlin kindly judged the dressage classes and Malcolm Holt and Paula Keeley judged the riding classes. Ridden Class line up

Popular dressage classes
The show began on the Sunday morning with the dressage classes which are always very popular and have full entries. Surrey-based Yvonne Rogers and her Lusitano mare Pelucia won the CRC Prelim class, while James Smith from Esperanza Dressage in Ewhurst took first place in the BD Prelim class. James was presented with a year’s subscription from Localrider Magazine, which is awarded to the local rider with the highest percentage score in all the dressage classes. The afternoon saw the breed classes – the Indoor arena at Merrist was split into two arenas – the Spanish horse classes took place on one side and the Lusitanos on the other side. The Part-bred Lusitano class was won by Cynthea Macrae from Basingstoke and her eightyear-old imported gelding, Tio Pepe and the Part-bred Spanish class was won by Vinas, owned by Suzanne Holt from Guildford.
Keeping it in the family
The purebred Lusitano Mare Class was won by 10-year-old Xira, who is owned and ridden by Susan Hocking from the New Forest. Marea VII won the Spanish Mares class, owned again by Susan Hocking, but ridden by her nephew, 14-year-old Ben Swann. Top spot in the Purebred Spanish Gelding class went to Cranleigh-based Debbie Moore with her 13-year-old Ligero XXX. Hilary McNeil took second place with her eight-year-old, Blue Chip. In the stallion classes, Ine Calvache Hoekstra’s 14-year-old Spanish Stallion, Lar ridden by Emma Thomas of Esperanza Dressage took the honours. While the Lusitano line-up was headed by Zoe Paramore’s 10-year-old, Atinado, who was ridden by Gonzalo Obeso. Lar went on to win the Spanish Championship and the winning mare, Xira, took the Lusitano Championship. At the end of Sunday’s classes, there was a tapas evening, kindly sponsored by London Spanish delicatessen, Tierra Verde, who specialise in organic Andalusian produce. They brought some of their products for people to try – jamon iberico, sherry, wine, olives – a lovely authentic way to end the first day of the show.

On Bank Holiday Monday, the riding classes took place, open to both Iberian breeds. Andover based rider, Caroline Clinkard brought her 15-year-old Spanish stallion, Balastro and he came first in both the side saddle class, with Caroline and won the Junior rider class with Caroline’s 13-year-old niece, Elena Rubini. Lorri Ould came second in the Low School class with her seven-year-old Spanish Stallion, Kerkiro Sinia and was also placed in the Novice horse class. Young rider, Lois Beckett from Four Marks in Hampshire, won the Traditional Tack & Dress class riding her mother, Sue Beckett’s Lusitano Gelding Rubi. A new addition to this year’s show was the Horse & Hound fun class – a clear favourite with the audience. Monday afternoon was rounded up with the Afternoon of Entertainment, which included the well-known dressage trainer, John Lassetter who worked with a couple of Iberians. At novice level, John worked with Lancashire rider Beth Heron and her Lusitano mare, Evolution and at a higher level of training, John gave a brilliant master class in flying changes with Alice Hurley and Karen Bourdon’s Spanish Stallion, Deseado CCV. Spanish rider from Jerez, Gonzalo Obeso gave a superb garocha display with Lusitano stallion Atinado and Lynne Mcleod and her Spanish stallion, Novato Salvatella performed their amazing freestyle to music routine “Avatar”, another favourite with the audience.

Herbb Natural Horse Rugs Julia Dunn with Prince

Here we share Julia Dunn’s story of the horse who inspired her and how she developed Herbb Natural Horse Rugs.
The winter weight Body Hugger Rug For more information telephone 01243 551580 or visit www.herbb.co.uk
J
ulia Dunn has owned horses for most of her life. Inspired by her own horse, Julia set about designing a rug, which works with the horse’s shape, as well as being comfortable and easy to use. Julia said; “My horse, Prince, had started performing houdini tricks and ripping off his traditional polyester buckle rugs. He only had the rugs on because he was getting chilly, but he still didn’t want to wear them. Prince’s actions made me wonder if he was trying to tell me something. He had started wearing rugs when he was eighteen-months-old, but it was only now that he took a dislike to them.
The most memorable rug-ripping
One morning when I went to let my boy out, I noticed pieces of his fleece over the stable door and on inspection the rest of the rug rolled up in the bedding. It was a polyester fleece and despite the cool nights, Price wasn’t happy wearing it.
What if I made a rug in natural fibres?
I thought it might have something to do with the fabric. I had some very natural material made from organic bamboo cotton and I wondered if Prince would prefer wearing a rug made from this fabric. Once I had decided to make a rug, I started thinking about the design. I questioned whether it needed two buckles at the chest, plus two surcingles and two leg straps. I decided Prince would love something softer and more forgiving, so I decided to keep it simple. The Body Hugger flexes with the horse’s shape, thus creating no pressure points and therefore no rubbing on the withers and shoulders. A quick and easy to use rug, which you can put in your domestic washing machine.
The Body Hugger
After several re-thinks, tweaks and testing on my own horse and friends’ horses too, I produced a rug which was simplicity itself. The rug is lightweight, even the quilted winter version and both are extremely cosy too. As for Prince, the ultimate tester, he loves wearing the rug. It simply slips over the horse’s head and secures with a fillet string. The rug can be used as an under rug, show rug, travel rug, sweat rug or stable rug. The fabric allows the horse’s skin to breathe and the natural cotton lining keeps the horse’s coat looking shiny all year round. I think the name says it all, “The Body Hugger” horse rug. I love giving my horse a hug and this rug really does hug the horse’s body.” OCTOBER 2014 Localrider 55

Acquired limb deviations in foals Words by Ed Lyall Bvet Med Cert EM (StudMed) MRCVS of the Arundel Equine Hospital
M
any foals, weanlings and yearlings can develop deviations through the joints that can result in permanent deformity, which can seriously affect their value and in some cases can render then useless for any kind of equestrian activity. If the limb bends outwards below a joint when viewed from the front this is called a valgus deviation. If the limb appears to bend inwards below a joint, then that is referred to as a varus deviation. Both valgus and varus deviations are angular limb deformities. As they develop after birth in what were originally foals with straight legs these deformities are also referred to as acquired - hence acquired angular limb deformities. The deviation is then classified by which joint is affected, so if the limb deviates outwards below the knee or carpus in the forelimb, the deviation would be classified as an acquired carpal valgus angular limb deformity.
Growth plates
These angular limb deformities occur due to disproportionate growth across the region of bone where growth occurs, the growth plate. The growth plates are situated at the ends of the bones, they are a line of rapidly multiplying cartilage cells that as they increase in number they move away from where they originated and ossify becoming bone, hence making the bone longer. This line of rapidly multiplying cartilage cells is sensitive and prone to trauma and inflammation. Inflammation of the growth plate is called physitis, it is commonly seen in the autumn and is usually the result of foals running around on hard ground combined with excessive growth rates in the foal. If the inflammation occurs more on one side than the other and the side that is inflamed does not grow as much as

Foal toe extension
Weanling with severe boxy foot
the more normal side then a deviation will occur. It is important to keep an eye on foals, weanlings and yearlings to watch for swellings around the joints. These swollen regions can be painful and hot to touch. The joints commonly affected by physitis are the fetlocks, where the joints start to look a sort of apple shape. Often a varus deviation will form at the fetlock in foals as a consequence of physitis. The end of the forearm, or the distal radial growth plate is also commonly affected, often on the inside, resulting in a carpal varus deviation of the limb.
Boxy foot
Another form of deviation that can occur is a flexural deformity, when viewed from the side, where the youngster ends up with an upright hoof (boxy foot) following deep digital flexor tendon contracture or where they end up upright through the fetlock due to superficial digital flexor contracture. This too can be acquired very quickly in young foals that were previously normal. Once again the cause is often hard ground making the foal foot sore, it tries to stand on the tip of the toe to avoid loading the painful sole, the muscles that account for this action then fibrose in this contracted state, the tip of the toe wears away and a boxy foot results. Often this is just one foot. When the fetlocks are affected it is usually bilateral, resulting in an upright stance. Excessive growth rate can also be a contributory factor; simplistically the bones grow too fast for the tendons resulting a rotation of the limb around the affected joint.
Early observation is key
The key to preventing limb deviations occurring is observation of the foal’s legs for physitis and also for abnormal weight bearing on the hooves. Often this will require the foals to be brought in and stood on a concrete surface so that a proper assessment can be made. Also any foals that are lame for a period of time should be brought in and examined. It is a good idea for the farrier to be involved in these assessments as sometimes small changes in hoof trimming can keep a foal’s legs straight. Treatment of physitis primarily is rest on a soft surface, combined with anti-inflammatory medication and even weaning to control growth rate. The same treatment is applied to the flexural limb deviations also. If an angular limb deformity has already formed some mild deviations can be corrected by remedial farriery. More significant deviations may require surgery to correct, these operations should take place as soon as possible as for them to work the affected bone must be still growing. To straighten a limb we aim to stimulate growth on the inside of the deviation and inhibit growth on the outside. So on the inside the surface of the bone, the periosteum overlying the growth plate, is elevated or lifted to stimulate bone growth. On the outside a bridge is placed across the growth plate to inhibit its growth, this is usually a screw placed into the bone above and below the growth plate with a wire connecting them, bridging over the growth plate, a transphyseal bridge. A simple staple can be used in some cases. This bridge is removed once the leg is straight. These surgeries are performed in conjunction with farriery and the limbs are x-rayed prior to carrying out the procedure to make sure the growth plates are open enough to allow further growth. It is better to prevent these deviations from occurring in the first place by careful observation and management of young stock.

Feeding Forage this Winter T
he decision on whether to feed hay or haylage this winter and what ‘type’ of either of these to buy should be influenced by careful and honest consideration of what your horse needs. How hard is your horse really working? Making the correct decision here and perhaps approaching your winter feeding regime slightly differently could save you money by reducing hard-feed bills and keep your horse happier by encouraging natural feeding patterns.
Check the quality
The quality of both hay and haylage are primarily influenced the stage of growth at which the grass is cut and the conservation process. Haylage is generally conserved at an earlier stage of growth than hay, so there should be a higher proportion of leaf to stem. This usually makes haylage higher in energy and protein than most hays. After this wonderful sunny summer the grass will be high in sugar and in well fermented leafy haylage these sugars are fermented to lactic acid which preserves the grass and makes high quality feed. Simply looking at the amount of leaf to stem and smelling that slightly sweet vinegar smell should tell you that the crop has been well preserved. This is rich, nutrient dense haylage and most suitable for hard-working horses. If the pH is approx. 5.4 then the shelf-life of an opened bale should be three to four days. Haylage that is cut from more mature grass has a high proportion of stem to leaf, is drier and is conserved simply by excluding (wrapping) the air. Generally a stemmy haylage is lower in energy and protein, with a similar nutrient content to hay and so is suitable to feed to less active horses. However, the draw-back with this haylage is that once opened the bacteria and mould grow rapidly (as the pH is higher at 6 / 7) and so the shelf-life is reduced to two to three days.
after three days. It is very important to steam properly as partially heating and wetting the fodder in a home-made steamer has also been shown to actually increase bacteria concentrations (as with soaking) rather than reducing them. Thorough steaming making sure that steam penetrates all the hay and that temperatures reach in excess of 95°C for 10 minutes is necessary to ensure your fodder is low in dust and free from microbes. The only proven way of achieving this in both hay and haylage is to use a Haygain steamer.
Haygain Benefits
Haygain hay steamers are scientifically proven to eliminate respirable dust, killing mould and bacteria in hay and haylage in approximately 50 minutes. Research has shown that soaking hay boosts bacteria growth in just 10 minutes by 1.5 times. A separate study compared the effectiveness of the specifically designed Haygain with a homemade version, kettles of water and soaking and concluded the Haygain was significantly more effective at reducing microbes in hay. Haygain is currently available in three models: the HG-1000, HG-600 and HG-GO. Complete nutritional value and goodness are maintained with improved palatability. For further information please contact Haygain on (0333) 200 5233 or visit www.haygain.com
Your horse’s health
16 hours a day
Selective breeding has changed many characteristics of the horse, but their digestive systems and feeding patterns have not altered. Horses should eat fibre for 16+ hours per day, so when choosing winter fodder you need to keep this in mind. To occupy a stabled horse, stemmy haylage and hay are more suitable for most horses as we want to try and promote ad lib feeding, while controlling body weight. Continual access to dry fodder introduces respirable dust (particles <5 um) into the environment particularly in the breathing zone of the horse and this can cause debilitating respiratory disorders.
A dusty problem
The well-recognised problem of dust in hay is traditionally tackled by soaking. However, recent research has shown that soaking, even for short periods can significantly increase the bacteria concentration so lowering the hygienic quality of the hay. Low quality hay is linked with colic, and as this is still the biggest cause of death of horses in UK it is best to find an alternative way of dealing with dust.
Time to steam
One such alternative is steaming. Steaming fodder in a Haygain steamer (HG 1000, HG 600 and HG-GO) has been scientifically proven to reduce dust, moulds and bacteria by > 90%. Steaming forage, hay and haylage therefore deals with the respirable dust, the bacteria and moulds that cause deterioration of the fodder, so not only is dust reduced but shelf-life is increased. This process allows one horse owners to feed haylage without worrying about ‘freshness’ or having to throw out unused feed

Feeding for
Fibre
Horses thrive on fibre rich diets and depending on the amount and quality of the hay and grass your horse is eating he may need additional feed and supplements to ensure he is receiving a balanced diet. Here we look at some of the fibre rich feeds available to feed this autumn.
HorseHage Your choice of forage for your horse or pony should be the most important dietary decision you make for them. As the equine diet should consist of 70 – 100% forage, it makes sense to ensure that you opt for the best possible quality, and for a healthy respiratory system and to avoid conditions such as RAO, it should also be dust-free. HorseHage offers several benefits to both horse and rider. It is dust-free and contains no additives, is consistent and fully guaranteed and comes in four different varieties so there’s a choice for all types of horses and ponies. It is lower in sugar than most hays and both the High Fibre and Timothy varieties can be safely fed to laminitics. But as well as the health benefits to your horse, it can also make your life easier too. HorseHage does not require any soaking or steaming. It comes in easy to handle small bales, but don’t be fooled into thinking this means less forage. The bales are highly compressed to around half their original size and packed into double-skinned bags to avoid puncturing. This makes them very handy and ideal to fit into your car boot for transportation and perfect for taking to shows, but they still contain around 22kg of forage. HorseHage splits really easily into wedges for netting up and there is usually no waste as the taste is relished by most equines and they will usually eat up. To slow down your horse or pony’s rate of eating, use a small mesh HorseHage Net to prolong eating time or use two hay nets, one inside the other. This will also help to relieve boredom when your horse is stabled. Choosing a high quality forage such as HorseHage may also enable you to reduce your horse’s hard feed by up to a third. For more information on feeding your horse or pony please call the HorseHage Helpline on 01803 527257 or visit www.horsehage.co.uk
special offer HorseHage are offering a HorseHage Net with every four bales or more of HorseHage purchased (while stocks last). They have 500 nets to give away – but once they’ve gone, they’ve gone. Just keep your till receipt showing your purchase of four bales or more and visit their website at www.horsehage.co.uk to find out how to redeem it for your free net. Plus check out their competition to ‘Win a Year’s Supply of HorseHage!’
Blue Chip Feed Balancers Horses have evolved to eat a mainly fibre diet, however, a diet solely of grass is not always possible in winter and is often lacking in essential vitamins, minerals and nutrients, this is why the diet needs to be supplemented with hay or haylage. Grass also contains natural antioxidants which will be depleted in winter. Feeding a high quality feed balancer such as one from the Blue Chip range will ensure that your horse or pony is getting a nutritionally balanced diet, and because all the Blue Chip balancers are nutrient dense they are fed in small quantities. Blue Chip balancers are whole-cereal and molasses free and include a fruit derived form of vitamin E, which is a powerful natural antioxidant. Horses can use up to 80% of their feed energy keeping warm; fibre is the most ‘warming’ feed, as more heat is produced during digestion of fibre than any other nutrient. All of the Blue Chip balancers contain a probiotic yeast which can double the digestibility of fibre in the diet, meaning that they will get twice as much ‘warming energy’ out of their hay or haylage. Tel: 0114 266200, www.bluechipfeed.com
SPILLERS® High Fibre Cubes A high fibre diet is the healthiest way to feed your horse or pony and SPILLERS® High Fibre Cubes are recognised by vets and nutritionists as one of the safest and most versatile options you can choose. The low starch, high in fibre formulation of SPILLERS® High Fibre Cubes, combined with a high specification of vitamins and minerals, makes them the safe choice for horses and ponies prone to laminitis, while the low calorie content makes them ideal for native types and good doers, those at rest or in light work or those prone to excitability. They can be used as a hay replacer, providing a complete feed for veterans that are unable to manage long fibres. Tel: 01908 226626, www.spillers-feeds.com
TopChop Grass
Fibre-Beet is a Super Fibre conditioning feed. It is a formulated blend containing all the benefits of the original Speedi-Beet product with added high quality Alfalfa for optimum condition, and to provide quality protein for muscle tone and function. It is ideal for horses prone to digestive upsets and is very palatable for fussy eaters. FibreBeet has added biotin for hoof quality and is approved by The Laminitis Trust. Fibre-Beet can also be used as a forage replacer (up to 60% of the daily forage allowance). Soaked and ready to feed in only 45 minutes in cold water, or 15 minutes in warm water.
TopChop Grass is a blend of specially selected, dried, British grasses. It is ideal for horses and ponies needing a soft, very palatable chop, perfect for fussy feeders including fit performance horses and elderly horses. The formula for TopChop Grass was tested and developed at the Middle Park Equine Research Unit and has been approved by the nutritional team as suitable for all horses and ponies other than those prone to laminitis and those that need to lose weight TopChop Grass is a high quality chop that can be fed solely with a TopSpec feed balancer or supplement. Additional feed, for example a TopSpec Blend, can be added if extra nutrients for work or condition are required. It can be used as a hay replacer, especially for elderly horses struggling to maintain condition as a result of poor dentition reducing their ability to chew hay or haylage TopChop Grass is dust-extracted and the grass has been high-temperature dried. These two procedures minimise potential mould, making the chop suitable for horses and ponies with respiratory problems. Always dampen feed if your horse or pony has respiratory problems.

TopSpec Cool Balancer topSpec cool balancer is designed for horses and ponies that need extra condition, but no ‘fizz’ and that are in light to medium work. cool balancer provides a very palatable, safe and effective way to improve condition and topline without adding excess calories to the diet. It is a ‘Non-Heating,’ cereal-grain-free formula; with low levels of starch and sugar, plus good quality protein. It stimulates weight gain whilst delivering a formula that not only avoids exciting horses but also includes ingredients that may reduce anxiety and help horses relax. Feeding topSpec cool balancer improves the amount of nutrients that a horse can extract from his feed and because the horse can utilise more nutrients from forage the amount of concentrate that needs to be fed can be reduced. this benefits digestion and is a more natural way of feeding, leading to a more relaxed horse. the forage to concentrate ratio is also improved because cool balancer is very nutrient-dense. It is fed in very small quantities, for example just 500g (approximately two beakers) a day for a typical 16hh middleweight weighing 500kg. A small amount of hard feed obviously leaves more space in the digestive system for forage than a large hard feed. Tel: 01845 565030, www.topspec.com
Aloeride changes in diet and reduced exercise and turnout over the winter can all have an impact on your horse’s digestive system. Aloeride, the natural aloe vera supplement for horses, not only helps to support the horse’s digestive health, but can also help to sustain a healthy gut, which are contributing factors in keeping your horse healthy this winter. Feeding Aloeride is easy with taste-free daily sachets packed full of aloe vera goodness. A30 day supply equals over 12 litres of aloe vera juice and offers a simple approach in keeping your horse feeling and looking his best over the winter. Tel: 01858 464550, www.aloeride.co.uk
ReadyFibre Mash With the lower nutritional value of grazing and colder temperatures it is important to keep fibre at the forefront of any horse’s diet, whether stabled or living out this winter. ready Fibre Mash is made out of 100% high digestible fibre and is ideal to use to help maintain the fibre levels in the diet. taking just five minutes to soak to form a healthy soft textured mash it is extremely palatable for horses who have trouble chewing long stem fibre and it can be used as a complete fibre replacer. With a very low starch and sugar content and no cereals readyFibre Mash is a very versatile product that is suitable for feeding to horses that suffer from laminitis and cushing’s. For more information on ReadyFibre Mash contact Rowen Barbary Horse Feeds on 01948 880598 or visit www.rowenbarbary.co.uk

Feeding the Veteran Horse or Pony Just like all horses and ponies veterans come in all shapes and sizes. Some are good doers, some tend to lose weight over winter and whilst some suffer from old bones, others never suffer a stiff day in their life. However, as horses age their ability to absorb the goodness in their feed can lessen and it is important to ensure you are helping your veteran by feeding him a good balanced diet.
Lifeforce Focus As horses and ponies age care must be taken to ensure their nutritional needs are met. Horses are often described as a veteran from 20 years of age; however some horses might show signs of aging much earlier while other will lead active lives long after 20. A horse or pony that once seemed to live on fresh air will eventually need additional nutritional support, especially to maintain condition which is often one of the largest issues facing veteran horses and ponies. A major factor in maintaining body condition is a reduction of nutrient digestion and absorption, often caused by deteriorating dentition as it becomes more difficult for veteran horses to chew long forage and release essential nutrients to maintain weight and also as horses age their digestive function declines. Lifeforce Focus from Alltech, is a supplement specially designed for less active horses and those that spend a lot of time grazing, working to provide preventative care for companion horses. Lifeforce Focus will help stimulate fibre digestion and help improve overall immune function. containing all natural ingredients it creates an ideal digestive environment which allows good bacteria to work most effectively throughout the gut helping to prevent digestive upsets. It also addresses challenges related to weight loss and body condition and provides organic trace minerals that are more easily absorbed and maintained. Tel: 01780 764512, www.lifeforcehorse.co.uk
Easy Pack Haylage Feeding your veteran haylage is an excellent idea as haylage has a higher water content making it easier to chew and digest. It also has a higher nutritional content than hay providing essential vitamins and minerals. easy Pack supplies three varieties of haylage all ideal for the veteran horse: timothy Haylage perfect for veterans who maybe suffering from Laminitis or cushings syndrome, as it is low in sugar and protein. Meadow Haylage is fantastic for the majority of veterans with medium protein levels, but maximum vitamins and mineral content. It is ideal to maintain a healthy weight and energy levels. rye Haylage can be used for weight gain or increased energy for the veteran, which is still in higher levels of work. www.easypackhaylage.com

Q
My 15.2hh bay gelding, Jerry is now 20-years-old, but still is prone to carrying too much weight. He can also come out of the stable a bit stiff. Is there anything you can suggest regards feeding and his general routine? Melanie Jones TopSpec Veterinary Nutritionist, Anna Welch BVSc, BSc, MRCVS answers…
A
Many horses, if they are not working sufficiently hard to burn off the calories they are consuming, are prone to weight gain. This is a very common situation in older horses, such as Jerry, especially when signs of arthritis begin to appear and they become less active. Controlling Jerry’s weight will be vital in his long-term management of stiffness. Excess condition puts unnecessary strain on joints and muscles and overweight horses are less agile and more prone to injury. Both feeding and management will be important for supporting Jerry’s senior years. Regular exercise, appropriate to his fitness level will help to reduce stiffness and control weight. It strengthens muscles and tendons which can protect against injury. Too higher intensity exercise, especially if he is not used to it or after rest days, will exacerbate problems with stiff joints, so all increases in exercise level should be made gradually. Warm up before exercise is also important when exercising to reduce the incidence of injury. From the point of view of supporting his joints, turnout is beneficial and depending on weather conditions, as much turnout as possible is best to keep him moving to avoid ‘stiffening up’ in the stable. However, this can prove a challenge with weight gain, depending on your grass quality. When grazing is restricted and time is spent off the grass, forage should still be provided. High fibre, late-cut meadow hay is ideal and this can be soaked (to reduce the content of soluble carbohydrate) for 8-12 hours in ample, cool, fresh water. This will reduce the calories in the hay without restricting fibre intake. Hay is best fed in nets with small holes or ‘double netted’ to slow consumption. The quantity (dry) of hay should not be reduced below 1.5% bodyweight unless requested by your vet (and even then, not below 1% of bodyweight). If grazing is being controlled in this way and hay being soaked, you will need to supplement your horse’s diet with vitamins and minerals. TopSpec Senior Lite Feed Balancer is ideal to balance your gelding’s restricted forage diet. It contains the optimum level of vitamins and minerals to support light to medium work and the scientifically recommended level of glucosamine (10g/500kg horse/day) to help maintain mobility. This is best fed with a low calorie and unmolassed chop, such as TopChop Lite, to provide a feed which will not promote weight gain. Tel: 01845-565030, www.topspec.com

Stable Environment At this time of year horses will usually start spending more hours in their stable. We have selected a few products which may help to improve your horse’s experience in the stable, as well as save time and possibly money.
Nettex Tastylyx
Stable hygiene is a very important issue. The general state of the stable has a huge impact on the stabled horse’s wellbeing. It is essential to remove as much dust, dirt and spores from the environment as possible. Dust and spores are the enemy and so a dust free stable is very important. Once fitted in the corner of your stable, the Hay Bar allows you to safely feed your horse hay/haylage. Research shows that it is more natural for horses to eat their hay from the ground, as this keeps their airways open. However, this can lead to hay becoming mixed in with the bedding, the Hay Bar prevents this cross contamination with the bedding. The Hay Bar is designed with hygiene and safety paramount. It is manufactured from HDPE which is a robust material, which is easy to clean. The Hay Bar is widely used in veterinary hospitals, not only because of the feeding position but because it also aids hygiene.
With autumn here and winter on its way, isn’t it time you looked for a bedding solution that’s not only cost effective, but could even give you some extra time in bed on those cold and dark winter mornings?! Verdo Horse Bedding is a clever heattreated wood pellet product, created for equine use, which is made from 100% virgin soft wood, responsibly sourced from managed woodland and manufactured at their own production plants in the UK. Verdo Horse Bedding is a new generation of horse bedding pellet which not only has a low dust content, making it the ideal choice for horses with compromised respiratory issues, but also absorbs three times its own weight in liquid. This not only helps maintain a dry environment, but also reduces ammonia, which again helps ensure that your horse is happier and healthier in the stable. This in turn not only reduces the size of your muckheap, but also the amount of bedding taken out, saving you time and money in the long run.
Nettex have launched Tastylyx, a range of delicious, mouthwatering natural flavoured treats as part of their Supalyx range. These new Tastylyx treats can be used to alleviate boredom whilst the horse is stabled, reducing the onset of stable vices. They are also great to reward your horse after exercise, for good behaviour, after a farrier or vet visit or just because you love them! They remove easily from the packaging and can be used in the stable with most standard lick holders. They are available in three flavours, Apple, Mint and Carrot and are ideal for stimulating and engaging the horse’s mind and increasing activity in a stabled environment. Top Tip: In hot weather place a Tastylyx pot in the freezer for an hour before giving to your horse. Remove from the packaging and hang as usual. This will be a refreshing treat for the horse and also slow down consumption. Try varying where you place your Tastylyx and also changing flavour as this will keep it more interesting for your horse.
