100% NATURAL, ANTI-BACTERIAL & ANTI-FUNGAL Equine America Hoof Balm™ is a super concentrated blend of natural oils – Coconut, Avocado, Jojoba and Eucalyptus - that shine, moisturise, nourish and protect the hoof, whilst still letting it breathe. These oils are beneficial to the health and nourishment of the hooves and enable the delivery of moisture, nutrients and protection deep into the inner layers of the hoof whilst providing bacterial and anti-fungal protection. Equine America Hoof Balm™ is the ideal product to use all year round - in dry conditions it provides excellent moisturising properties, whilst in winter it provides a water barrier against wet conditions while continually letting the hoof breathe. Equine America Hoof Balm™ is very concentrated – a small amount will go a long way. For optimum hoof health, use in conjunction with Equine America Hoof Powder.™

Welcome 40 T

hank you to everyone who called in to visit the Localrider Magazine stand at the New Forest and Royal International Shows. It was great to meet so many people, those we already know and new ones too. British show jumpers seem to be on a roll at the moment and it was lovely to see Ben Maher win the King George V Gold Cup almost a year after he won his gold medal in London. There was so much to see at Hickstead this year. Dane and his team at Dressage at Hickstead had secured a Nations Cup competition and even though the seats in the grandstand filled up quickly, there was plenty of space to sit quietly and watch the riders in the warm-up arenas. I for one certainly hope this becomes a permanent fixture at Dressage at Hickstead. From the moment the schools broke up Pony Club members have been busy with rallies, camp, area competitions and as we go to print the National Championships. We have included a selection of pictures from across the region and will share more next month. It has been all systems go at Localrider HQ this month with the launch of our new website, officially on line 1st September. We hope it will be a place for you to visit for local news and information. We also aim to share more results and pictures, so if you have organised a show and would like to see it featured email fiona@localrider.co.uk We shall be at the Sunshine Tour Championships the weekend of 21st & 22nd September, so if you have qualified do come and say hello. And Good Luck too!

news Aivly welcomes new staff
Horse Rangers awarded special status
T
he British Horse Society and the British Equestrian Federation have honoured the local charity - The Horse Rangers Association - with their Clubmark accreditation. It’s given to youth organisations offering high quality duty of care and child protection; sports equity and ethics and club management. Over 350 Horse Rangers attend sessions at the Hampton Court stables each week and all the activities rely on a team of over 200 dedicated volunteers. Jackie Bryans took over as Director of the charity in 2007 and explained: “With a four year waiting list to become members we knew we were offering young people a fabulous experience where they were able to learn all aspects of equestrianism; from stable management to riding and everything in between. This Clubmark status reassures parents and partner organisations with whom we work that the young people entrusted to our care are in good hands. Next year we will be celebrating our 60th anniversary and I think it is a fantastic testament to our staff and volunteers that we have been awarded this public recognition for all their hard work.” Stable Manager, Theresa Barrett, started as a Horse Ranger when she was eight-years-old. Nearly thirty years later, she still volunteers a huge amount of her spare time to the charity in addition to her full time role and says: “We pride ourselves on the high standards of our yard and what we are teaching the children. Having this work acknowledged at a national level by such highly regarded organisations in our industry is a terrific pat on the back.” The Horse Rangers Association (Hampton Court) is a charity which supports the personal development of children and young people, regardless of background or ability, by teaching them to ride and look after horses. Over 400 members attend each week, including those with special needs.
Totally Tweed Gersemi have introduced a stylish slant for their winter 2013 equestrian wardrobe. Taking a play on traditional tweeds they have mixed this country heritage with Scandinavian design to give a unique high fashion equestrienne feel. Using tweeds from some of the most sought after mills in Scotland they have mixed them with modern sports styling to give a perfect fit for today’s rider. The cute PYRI vest is a padded, close fitting, two way zip style that features a high fur trimmed collar. It has leather trims on the pockets, shoulder epaulettes and half belt together with a leather, back waist panel complete with embroidered logo. This neat piece can be worn when riding or as a fashion look for a more relaxed country occasion. With its light padding it can be used as an alternative to a jacket for the cool autumn days. It comes in a choice of Tweed fabrics that have a small plaid design. www.zebraproducts.com
Aivly Country Store in Ringwood welcomes two new members of staff to the team. Rebecca (Becky) Foggin from Poulner was familiar with Aivly Country Store having worked at the site over 10 years ago with previous occupants, Framptons – a pet and garden centre. A keen equestrian, Becky then pursued a career at the British Racing School in Newmarket but Becky Foggin having hung up those boots, a position at Aivly Country Store became the perfect position. Becky says: “It’s really nice to bump in to old customers from my Framptons’ days in the pet section. Staff development at Aivly is really consistent and with professional training from equestrian brands such as Ariat, NAF, Baileys, Top Spec and dog brands from Barking Heads to Burns nutrition, I’m learning a huge amount.” Rachel Elliott Horse-owner, Rachel Elliott joins Aivly from a position as a store director for clothing retailer, Beales. She explains: “I wanted to combine my equestrian and retailing experiences to really help customers and, since Aivly has so many regular shoppers, it’s great to be able to get their feedback first hand from recommended products be they bits to supplements.” Rachel admits her attention is regularly swayed by the equestrian clothing section and says, “There are so many items I dream of buying for myself with the Ariat Bromont boots in Wax Chocolate top of my list at the moment!”
£1,000 donation funds new research into Shire horse illnesses New research into common illnesses affecting Shire horses has been made possible thanks to a donation by members of the Shire horse world. The University of Liverpool’s Leahurst Equine Hospital in Neston, Wirral, will be conducting a health survey about Shire horses with their owners – after it received a £1,000 donation from members of the North West and Wales Shire Foal Society, which is affiliated to the Shire Horse Society. Jean Pleavin Edge, of the North West and Wales Shire Foal Society, said: “We are delighted to be able to donate this money to the Leahurst Equine Hospital and even more thrilled that it will be put towards researching common conditions such as Sweet Itch, an allergy which causes misery to Shire horses and their owners each year.” This research will provide evidence-based information about how common certain health conditions are in Shire horses and about the areas that owners of Shire horses want veterinary researchers to focus their efforts on in the future in order to maximise the health and welfare of these horses. Dr Debbie Archer, of the Leahurst Equine Hospital, said: “Our speciality is in research, so donations like this make it possible to use our expertise to help benefit equine health wherever we can, whether we are looking at thoroughbreds, Shire horses or an overweight Shetland pony – that is what we are here to do.” Members of the North West and Wales Shire Foal Society at Leahurst Equine Hospital. From left, Bill Massey, Dr Debbie Archer, of Leahurst Equine Hospital, Jean Pleavin Edge, chairlady of the North West and Wales Shire Foal Society, Alistair King and Terry Pleavin Edge.

Royal County of Berkshire Show This year’s Royal County of Berkshire Show (21st – 22nd September) provides some serious equestrian competition and a worthy finale to Britain’s outdoor show jumping season. Top of the bill in the Main Arena this year is the ‘International Stairway Final’ – now in its fifth year. Up to 30 competitors are set to battle it out, with a total of £7,500 prize money at stake. The series was created as part of an initiative by British Show Jumping to identify and assess both potential and existing British team competitors, and international riders and horses. Riders will compete at major county shows throughout the summer to clock up league points before heading to Berkshire. Add to the mix, 600 shopping stands, sheep shearing, entertainment and music, including a dedicated sports zone with BMX and skateboarding display and coaching and you have a show that will thrill all the family. For latest ticket information, visit www.berkshireshow.co.uk

Innovative Sheepskin Dressage Pad If you are looking for a sheepskin half pad, which combines a natural approach to materials and a technical attitude to design the Fleeceworks FXK Dressage Sheepskin Half Pad exclusively from retailer Shadow Horse could fit the bill. Styled in the finest Australian merino sheepskin, which is not only super dense and soft, but also far more robust than lambskin and superior in its breathability and overall performance. The chemically untreated sheepskin is ideal for horses with sensitive skin and is also cut shorter than most on the market, giving the shorter dense hair incredible cushioning qualities, which also stops the sheepskin matting over time. The thinner hind, which has been carefully tanned to lengthen and enhance the life of the product further adds to this half pad’s appeal, allowing for improved flexibility and breathability. The complete sheepskin coverage also dispels any pressure points caused by gullet-free channel seaming. Incorporating their very own ‘FXK’ technology, the pad features a clever internal vertical elastic strip, which allows the pad to move with the horse’s movement, without rubbing, slipping or pulling down and causing pressure along the spine whilst helping to keep the pad in place. Ideal for large moving horses or those animals, which are sensitive to any restriction around the shoulders or under the saddle area. This half pad also features a longer cut under the tree points to allow for the straight cut shape of the dressage saddle. www.shadowhorse.co.uk
Body Armour Fit for Kings
M
ary and Emily King have added Rodney Powell Body Protectors to their list of sponsors. The mother and daughter duo have been kitted out with new Elite X2ESP body protectors customised in their respective team colours. Conforming to the latest safety standards, the Elite X2ESP is designed to be lightweight, flexible and breathable for maximum comfort. “Body armour is obviously important in such a high risk sport,” said Mary, “but it’s also important to be comfortable as you don’t want to be distracted when you’re riding. Rodney Powell Body Protectors provide us with reassurance we need whilst being flexible and comfortable to wear. Once on, you forget that you’re wearing it which leaves us free to get on and focus on the job in hand.” Manufactured in heat responsive foam, the Elite X2ESP moulds to the wearer’s shape while a reinforced column down the centre of the back panel offers enhanced spinal protection over and above that required in testing. A comprehensive choice of bespoke colours and patterns is available on request – see the website ‘Colour Picker’ for details. www.rodneypowell.co.uk
Volunteer Opportunity with Overseas Equine Charity A rare and exciting opportunity has arisen to volunteer for a small equine charity, the Gambia Horse and Donkey Trust in The Gambia, West Africa. The Gambia Horse and Donkey Trust (GHDT) are seeking a long term volunteer administrator to help with the charities operations in The Gambia for a period of one year – truly a once in a lifetime opportunity for the right person. The GHDT are working to reduce poverty in rural Gambia through improving the health, welfare and productivity of working equines who are heavily relied upon to carry out farming and transportation duties for their owners. This is done through the provision of veterinary treatments and harnessing materials, and educational animal welfare and management programmes for children and farmers throughout The Gambia. As a small charity the GHDT rely heavily upon their long term volunteers for successful implementation and administration of their activities within The Gambia. For this reason applicants are required to be educated to a minimum of degree level and ideally have experience of working with both people and equines. An ability to use your own initiative is absolutely essential, as is the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Due to the remote, rural location of the centre long term volunteers are required to regularly work outside of ‘normal’ working hours and have an excellent ability to prioritise appropriately in difficult situations. If this sounds like the type of challenge you have always hoped to be involved with, please contact anna_ghdt@hotmail.co.uk for a full description of the voluntary role with this fantastic small charity that is making a big difference to the lives of people and animals in The Gambia. People with a passion for both animals and people are sought for this role and particular experience of managing groups of people would be of great benefit. www.gambiahorseanddonkey.org.uk

news Science Supplements sponsor Horse of the Year Show
E
quine nutrition specialist Science Supplements has become the official sponsor of the Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) Ladies Hunter of the Year Championship, establishing an exciting new partnership. Visitors to the show, which runs from 9th - 13th October at Birmingham’s NEC, will witness timeless elegance when the class takes place on Thursday 10th October. More than 20 hunters will be gracefully ridden side-saddle by ladies dressed in traditional habits, all vying for the title of Science Supplements Ladies Hunter of the Year. The Championship took an exciting turn last year. Former SEIB Search for a Star finalist Jenna Tyldesley and her own Tudor Minstral claimed both the Unify Group Ladies Hunter of the Year and TopSpec Show Hunter of the Year Championships. They demonstrated a superb example of how an amateur combination can work its way up the showing ladder to succeed in open Championships. Dr David Marlin of Science Supplements commented: “With many of our customers competing at HOYS, we are proud to be sponsoring such a prestigious class as the Ladies Hunter of the Year. We are looking forward to what will be a very competitive final.” For show information, including the show timetable, and to book, visit www.hoys.co.uk
L-R: Hilary and Dr Rennie at the Air Ambulance base
Horse rider reunited with lifesaver
A grandmother airlifted to hospital after a horse riding accident has been reunited with the Kent, Surrey & Sussex Air Ambulance doctor who helped save her life. Hilary Vannier was riding with her local hunt in Shipbourne in Kent when her thoroughbred cross Benji lost his footing and she was thrown off and knocked unconscious. She had to be given emergency treatment at the scene by the charity helicopter’s doctor and paramedic who carried out advanced medical procedures usually performed only in hospital. Hilary, 58, from East Grinstead, was then flown to a major trauma centre in London as her children made a mercy dash from their homes in Florida and Malaysia to be at her bedside. Scans at King’s College Hospital showed that she had suffered a potentially fatal cerebral bleed and she remained in a druginduced coma for three days. She finally awoke from her coma after a further 10 days and spent more than a month at King’s before being transferred to her local specialist neurological unit at the Princess Royal Hospital for a further week. Hilary was finally allowed home with ongoing rehabilitation and in July she met Air Ambulance doctor Alistair Rennie for the first time since the accident in March.
Gummy Mitt from Parelli The new Gummy Mitt from Parelli is a soft jelly scrubber that will remove even the most stubborn of dirt. One side is gentle so can be used on delicate areas such as the face and legs with the other being more rigid for the rest of the body, the soft side is also kind enough to use on a foal. The jelly material makes the Gummy Mitt ideal for scrubbing up a lather when bathing, helping to remove the most difficult of stains. A unique piece of grooming equipment, giving head to toe use, the Gummy Mitt will be a must that you can’t live without. Do You Know an Equine Hero? Do you know an Equine Hero? Behind every aspiring champion there is always an unsung hero. Do you know someone who gives up hours of free time to help out at equestrian events or has spent many years running or organising shows, training or competitions at your local Riding Club or Pony Club? Do you have a friend who is always there if you need someone to groom for you at a show? Or is there a special person in your life who you simply couldn’t manage without when it comes to the horses? If so, the team at Alltech want to hear from you and your own unsung hero could soon be in the spotlight. Alltech have been the unsung hero behind many of the world’s top feeds and supplements for over 30 years as the leading experts in digestive health. So, as the title sponsor of the 2014 World Equestrian Games in Normandy, Alltech want to reward other unsung heroes. An equine hero can be anyone and are often the unseen face in the background. A farrier perhaps who has helped keep your horse sound against all the odds, the Pony Club mum who goes that extra mile to make sure everyone has a great time at events, or maybe someone who tirelessly gives up their own time and money to rescue neglected horses, the list of unsung equine heroes is endless. The team at Alltech want to know about the person who enables you to achieve your equestrian dreams. You can nominate your equine hero by going to the Equine Heroes website www.EquineHero.com and filling out the form. Every month Alltech will reward one deserving equine hero with £100 and a Lifeforce hamper full of goodies and their story will be featured on the equine heroes’ facebook page. Then in July 2014 we will choose the ultimate equine hero, the hero who stands out amongst all the other equine heroes and reward them with a trip for four to the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games. FEATURE Many UK horse owners choose barefoot hoofcare
I believe the “movement” of modern barefoot hoofcare for horses began in 1999...
Photo by Steven Leigh of www.natureswaynhc.co.uk
Barefoot hoofcare advocate, Yvonne Weltz of The Horse’s Hoof magazine in the USA, has created an interesting summary of events within the hoofcare movement, which predominantly took place in America.
May 1999: The first edition of [vet] Jaime Jackson’s barefoot newsletter The Hoof Care Advisor is published. June 1999: [Vet] Dr. Strasser presents two hoof care seminars in Canada. Late 1999: Jaime Jackson publishes the first edition of Horse Owner’s Guide to Natural HoofCare. Late 1999: The publication of Dr. Hiltrud Strasser’s book, Shoeing: A Necessary Evil? Facts Every Horse Owner Should Know About Shoeing. June 2000: The yahoo group “naturalhorsetrim” is co-founded by Gretchen Fathauer and Yvonne Welz. July 2000: The last issue of Jaime Jackson’s newsletter The Hoof Care Advisor is released and The Horse’s Hoof launches. Summer 2000: Cindy “Hawk” Sullivan, who had just attended a May 2000 Strasser seminar, brings this information back to her friend, farrier Pete Ramey. Pete subsequently develops his own [trimming] method.
A timeline of barefoot Edited by Lucy Nicholas and extracted with permission from The Horse’s Hoof Magazine, Issue 50 Useful websites - www.thehorseshoof.com www.trelawneequine.co.uk
My barefoot journey – Lucy Nicholas I learned via my own horses’ care that horse shoes are there to allow horses to work on any surface without conditioning the hoof, or adjusting the animal’s diet and lifestyle. As an experienced equestrian retailer, once I had begun my own successful barefoot Lucy Nicholas chooses journey with my horses in the ‘noughties’, I was able to connect with the many horse the barefoot lifestyle for her horses, including owners interested in purchasing hoof Primrose Hill, pictured boots, widely used to help prevent wear and ‘transition’ from shod to bare, and launch Trelawne Equine, distributor of the Easycare range of hoof boots, in 2009. In 2012, I wrote and published the UK’s first easy-to-read book on barefoot hoof care and hoof booting, ‘The Barefoot Horse: An Introduction to Barefoot Hoof Care and Hoof Boots’, with J.A. Allen. Now in 2013, very many horse owners have become interested in barefoot performance hoofcare in the UK.
Summer 2000: The website thehorseshoof.com is launched. Lance Anderson
Lance with Sophie at Epsom Polo Club
Words and pictures by Alex Kelly
South African born polo player, Lance Anderson, can regularly be seen galloping up and down some of the world’s finest polo fields, but he is also building a reputation for himself as an instructor at his home and base at the Epsom Polo Club. Alex Kelly went along to meet him and to find out what the future has in store for Lance. Match time at Epsom Polo Club

E
psom Polo Club in Surrey is home of the Great Meadow Polo field and the largest indoor Polo Arena in the South East of England and it is where 29-year- old, Lance Anderson is based. South African born Lance is a professional polo player, instructor and founder of LMA Polo. Having spent his formative years in Cape Town, Lance moved to the UK eleven years ago. He grew up around horses and polo (his step-father, Kevin Rixon and his siblings all play), but as a youngster his passion was rugby and he did not take up polo seriously until he was 17. Finding he had a talent for the fast-paced and adrenalin fuelled game he started playing regularly for his family team. In 2004 Lance was awarded Young Player of the Year, after competing in the Pony Club Gannon final. His professional career snowballed from there, now handicapped at a valuable three, he is in-demand as a freelancer and plays for a number of teams in both high and medium goal matches around the world. Career highlights so far for Lance include, helping Epsom Polo Club to win the Waterloo Cup and team Veuve Clicquot come out on top in the Bentley International. He often plays for the South African based, Val De Vie team and was part of the squad which finished runnersup in the Four Nations tournaments.
Polo & Pimms This season has been spent concentrating on his career as an instructor and overseeing the growth of LMA Polo’s reputation. Lance strongly believes that Polo should be more accessible and he aims, “to encourage people to try the game”. Despite Polo being for all ages, he is heartened to see an increase in younger people wishing to take up the game, very often being introduced via university teams. From complete beginners, to those wishing to improve their game, Lance offers lessons and an opportunity to ride some of his successful ponies in some practice chukkas. As LMA Polo’s Epsom home is within convenient reach of London their “Polo and Pimms” days are proving very popular for corporate events. 18 Localrider SEPTEMBER 2013

A Polo Machine As well as taking part in professional matches, Lance’s ponies give students of LMA a chance to ride fit, happy and balanced horses. There are ponies to cater for all abilities, Argentinian cross thoroughbred Lucita is a favorite with clients. Lance cites his two Irish bred thoroughbreds as the stars of his strong string. Pedro, is fast and nippy on the field, which are two qualities also found in his best horse, Sophie, whose intelligence and handiness leads Lance to describe her, “as a Polo machine”. The ponies are trained by Lance whose philosophy is, “happy horses mean good
horses”. He never rushes a pony onto the field and spends a lot of time working on fitness and classical basics, as a supple horse is key for polo. Lance’s hectic schedule means that he relies heavily on his talented team to assist with the basics. Head girl, Lisa Knight, along with Olivia Shea and Ellen Kane get the ponies fit through hacking out, later building strength through lunging in a Pessoa and dressage based schooling. They also deal with the day-to-day running of the yard. His superb back-up team not only allows Lance to concentrate on his playing and teaching commitments, but also on keeping fit, he trains five days a week to keep himself light for the ponies.
Escaping the winter Generally, around February Lance will head abroad to play. “Because I have such a great team at home to prep the ponies for the season here,” he said. Very often South Africa is the destination of choice to escape the winter gloom of England, but he has also played in Argentina and Zambia. We’re assured by Lance that the life of an international Polo player isn’t just glamour. His Polo boots are kept firmly on the ground by his family, who at the time of this interview required all the strong men to help make and stack 800 plus bales of hay – even if it will take all night.

n saturday 3rd august, mount mascal riding Club set off from bexley, with three teams plus supporters, to compete in the british Horse society riding Clubs team Jumping Championship at Hickstead on the sunday. Competition rules require that each team is made up of three horses and riders: one novice combination jumping 85cm, one intermediate combination jumping 95cm and one open combination jumping 1.05m. each combination rides one round against the clock. only one junior rider is allowed per team. the team with the fewest combined faults and fastest combined time wins. With 90 teams entered, hard fought competition was anticipated. the club was therefore thrilled to gain first place with their team of Kirsty Warner (easton Whisper), a junior riding the first round, adam Heitman (belle Caratino) riding the second round and emma bulter riding alfie in the third round. Chef d’equipe, Carley-ann Hartigan said: “the team got off to a super start when Kirsty rode clear and like lightning. she was the 52nd rider in her round and the judge announced “a very fast time”. adam and emma also rode clear and with time as their absolute essence. but we were overwhelmed at the final result. only three teams achieved three clear rounds and so it was their economy, accuracy and efficiency that set them apart. We all had a wonderful weekend and our horses were fantastic. special mention to Kimberley manze who was called up as last minute reserve to ride athlone leah owned by alison Window, Director of mount mascal stables. and thank you to Fiona Jones and adam Heitman, also at mount mascal stables for coaching the team members.”

Returning to riding
Never feel pressurised to jump or ride a tricky horse before you’re ready.
By instructor Michaela Huntington
Are you thinking about returning to riding after a break, or a period of not owning a horse? If you are getting prepared for hopping back into the saddle, then this article is for you; and despite the Fit for purpose It may be wise to undertake some basic fitness exercises and fact that returning to riding might feel techniques, such as going for walks, joining the gym or swimming, a little daunting, it is sure to all coming before getting back in the saddle; consider something like yoga or pilates, if you are in need of some gentle suppling. Of course, horse flooding back. riding is a great way to stay in shape in itself. So if you are looking to
W
hether you chose to have a break from horses due to work commitments, pregnancy, family commitments or after suffering a fall or accident, the first step is to find out what is best for you, so your return to the saddle is as seamless as possible. This may be choosing the right horse, finding the right riding centre, or taking a refresher programme selecting exactly what you need as an individual; an important part of safely ‘taking back the reins’.
Take it slowly if you are returning to riding after pregnancy, and always consult your doctor.
get fit and exercise whilst having fun, you will find that horse riding strengthens your core musculature whilst toning the tum, bum and legs and arms during what could be a good cardiovascular workout. Nonetheless, despite your excitement about taking up riding again, it is important to take safety precautions. Up to standard helmets should always be worn, while a body protector is a highly useful piece of kit if you are feeling rusty; the RS-tor can also be a fabulous tool in ‘getting a handle’ of getting back in the saddle. The RS-tor is a safety device used to reduce the risk factors for falls. The handy, innovative design allows you to simply hook and attach the harness onto the stirrup bar of the saddle, replacing the stirrup leathers over the top, providing you with an unobtrusive strap to hold with your reins – an elasticated bungee element absorbs the movement if you’re unseated, thus limiting the risk of falling.
Top Tips for Getting Back in the Saddle Safely • Never feel pressurised to do something you are worried about, or are unconfident to complete; for example, jumping fences or riding a tricky horse. Remember, you are the safest when you are feeling confident and riding positively. • Ride out on the road in experienced company, and always wear high visibility gear, whatever the weather.
Have you missed riding and are looking forward to getting back into the saddle?
• Keep your RS-tor on the saddle at all times, to allow you instantaneous recovery from potentially dangerous horse riding situations such as falls, spooks, bucks, rears or cat leaps. • Find an inspiring, quiet and confident riding instructor, who is understanding of riders returning to the saddle after a break. • Complete some simple stretching exercises before and after riding, such as reaching up towards the ceiling, stretching down to touch your toes, and completing some simple lunges – these can help ease those aches and pains post horse riding. Above: Alex and Figaro Flyer competing in their first dressage competition together at Crockstead Equestrian Centre. They had a good placing and will share more news of their outing in the next issue.
It is now over a year since Alex Kelly bought Figaro Flyer at the Brightwells sale in Ascot and he is proving to be a very versatile re-trained racehorse. He exudes a calm temperament and is happy playing schoolmaster to Alex’s young hack as he is in the dressage arena. Here Alex shares Figaro Flyer’s adventures from the last month or so.
F
iggie has had yet another holiday, but this time a working holiday, he has spent a week with Helen Baker at her Horsham based yard. It came at a convenient time as Helen had a free stable and I was starting a new job, so one less to work was a blessing. Also I’ll admit I needed some help with collecting his canter transitions and Helen has provided just the help I needed. To help gain his confidence Helen took him out in the fields so he had the space to go forward into his transitions, without worrying about the confines of the school. She has also worked him over trotting poles to get him lifting his hind legs. While there is still some polishing work to be done before we show the world his canter, although he really has made an improvement in a very short time. Figgie has also been busy entertaining my friend, Kate Ryan, from across the pond and has really taken to his duties as happy hacker. I have said right from the start of his retraining he is a
sensible horse to ride out and while I jest that if he takes off he’ll only go six furlongs, as he was a sprinter in his former life (apparently that’s not reassuring), he happily potters round the woods alone or in company. This is not an uncommon quality in an ex-racehorse (naturally there are exceptions) as while in training they do hack out. Those from yards based in the main racehorse hubs, such as Newmarket or Lambourn, will have had to hack to the communal gallops. Very often they negotiate busy roads and open spaces before they commence work. Even yards with private gallops use hacking to get the horses into the peak of their fitness. One sticking point can be asking a racehorse to hack alone, as on the whole they are always in the company of others, but with a confident rider who makes the horse feel secure this can be overcome, but it is without doubt something to consider when rehoming a racehorse.

lorious Goodwood certainly lived up to its name and the beautiful setting was the perfect backdrop for the clash of Toronado and Dawn Approach in the Sussex Stakes. Dubbed the “Duel on the Downs’ it was Toronado who produced a storming finish under jockey Richard Hughes to win the Sussex Stakes ahead of odds-on favourite and rival, Dawn Approach. Hughes timed his move to perfection on Toronado to edge clear in the final furlong and beat the 2,000 Guineas winner, claiming first prize for trainer Richard Hannon. At the colts’ two previous meetings, it has been Godolphin-owned, Dawn Approach, that come out on top, winning the Guineas at Newmarket before pipping Toronado to the post in the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot. At Ascot Racecourse the German trained Novelist ran on under jockey Johnny Murtagh to win the group one King George VI and Queen Elizabeth stakes on 27th July. Earlier that day racing fans were treated to a star studded ex-race horse parade. Organised by the ROR and a host of successful retrained racehorses took part.
Local Success story This month Samantha Fisher tells us about her retrained race horse, Mist Again.
Samantha Fisher and Mist Again, have won several ridden ex-racehorse competitions
Name and age: Mist Again (Misty), ten-years-old. Purchased when and where: Private rescue from Edenbridge, Kent in 2012 (I paid £1 for her). Racing history: Ten starts National Hunt and hurdles. She finished mid field each race and fell once at Chepstow, but has no winnings. Biggest success so far: She has qualified for several dressage championships and been placed first, third and fourth in the Sunshine Tour up to novice level. In July 2013 she competed in her first elementary dressage competition and won it with over 62%. Showing, she has won numerous ex-racehorse classes including coming sixth in the novice riding horse and fourth in the amateur riding horse classes at her first affiliated show Goals for future: We are going to focus on some more County level showing classes and start jumping, so we can do some eventing. Any advice for anyone wanting to retrain a racehorse: Time and patience. Things do not happen with thoroughbreds over night but when they do, there is no better feeling of achievement. Would I do it again: Without a doubt, it is very rewarding! If you own an ex-racehorse and would like to feature in this column email: alex@localrider.co.uk

Lara Prior-Palmer wins
Mongol Derby Pictures courtesy of Richard Dunwoody and Nigel Goddard Lara riding Diamonds Are Forever at Borde Hill

N
ineteen-year-old Lara Prior-Palmer from Hampshire, won the Mongol Derby, crossing the finish line on 10th August, one day earlier than expected. She is the first British rider, the first female rider and also the youngest person ever to win the race since its launch in 2009. American, 20-year-old Devan Horn crossed the finish line first following a tight contest with Lara in the final few days of the race that began on Sunday 4th August. However, race rules stipulate each rider’s horse must pass a strict veterinary inspection at the end of each leg and Devan’s horse’s heart rate did not recover in the required time and she was issued a two hour penalty. When Lara crossed the line an hour later she passed the vet inspection and was therefore declared the winner. Agony for the American rider after a near perfect race over 1000 km and ecstasy for the niece of well known British equestrian Lucinda Green MBE (6 times Badminton champion and eventing legend).
In the footsteps of Genghis Khan The world’s longest horse race is a recreation of Genghis Khan’s ancient postal system - a mammoth network of 25 horse stations across the Mongolian steppe. Riders change their semi-wild Mongolian horses at each station approximately 40km apart and stay with the local nomadic herding families that run the stations and provide the horses. Just after crossing the line Lara said: “I can’t really believe it. I came into the first station last because my horse was so slow and I had to walk him in. I thought that would be the end of my Mongol Derby. I knew that there were 30 people and nearly all of those 30 wanted to win and I really just wanted to finish. If you compare my first few days to my last few days I was going so much slower and suddenly I just got the hang of it and how to ride the horses and what to do to catch up with the rest.”

select the best horse at each station. Picking a fast horse from among the 35 or so on offer makes a huge difference. Lara on the other hands says she “just sort of bumbled into it” adding that she thought she was very lucky. Rather than painstakingly assessing which horse to pick at each station she said “I always just let the herders choose for me” and admitted to not being the finest navigator the race has seen.
The world’s most gruelling race
Devan Horn, the American rider first across the line but placed second following her penalty, said: “I really have had an amazing ride, I’m feeling mixed emotions, I’m feeling a little bit disappointed, but I’m also feeling very elated that I finished. There’s definitely a little bit of rivalry going on - I thought I’d beaten her [Lara].The horse looked great, it was a kick in the teeth after riding 700 miles.”
New time record Lara said: “Apparently we’ve set a time record and since James [Johnston, the youngest rider in the field withdrew through injury] I’m actually the youngest finisher, ever!” The two riders approached the race with starkly contrasting styles and tactics. Devan had a precise plan to ride “as fast as my body would allow” and was mentored by 2010 Mongol Derby winner and former US Marine Justin Nelzen on how to assess then
Both riders however demonstrated exceptional horsemanship. Richard Dunwoody, the official race photojournalist and former champion jockey, said he’d witnessed “phenomenal riding” and that both Lara and Devan had “set a scorching pace”. Officially the world’s longest horse with a Guinness World Record set in 2010, the Mongol Derby went a long way to confirming its reputation as the most gruelling horse race around as well. Half of the 30 riders who started withdraw from the race. Many have fallen off or been unceremoniously bucked-off their semiwild horses or sustained injuries. Richard Dunwoody said that “it’s been a very tough year, a lot of riders have been thrown from their horses and there’s been illness through the riders and crew too. Certainly it can hold its head high and say that it is the world’s toughest horse race.”
thankfully but every rider has similar stories that demonstrate the dangers involved (if the 50% attrition wasn’t evidence enough). Second placed Devan Horn said: “On Day four, I was riding along and my horse started bucking really, really hard. I dropped my lead rein and without thinking I bent to catch it and unbalanced myself and the horse threw me, and then ran off! I had to hike the 10km back to his home gyr where he luckily was headed. So I never lost my horse but I had to hike for a long time and I remember thinking while I was hiking ‘what am I doing here, why did I decide to do this with my summer vacation?’” Devan was also kicked by her horse and experienced severe illness on the same day, but along with many other riders showed a willingness to fight through severe conditions, intense pain, and a lot of chafing, scrapes and bruises to carry on riding. While the horses are looked after by a team of equine vets, the riders are backed up by a team of emergency medics provided by Prometheus Medical, they’re a specialist team with experience of managing medical needs and emergencies in remote environments. They have dealt with everything from rashes and sores to severe gastrointestinal problems, dehydration and heat exhaustion among others. For more information visit www.mongolderby.com
A little bit of luck helps
Lara added there is an element of luck in staying fit and healthy: “Day four was tough, I was seriously knackered. I was riding a really fantastic horse this morning and it just somersaulted into a marmot hole, literally. It had been bolting so it was going really fast and then it landed on me and I was so lucky not to get hurt - it was a really intense and quite exciting experience.” Both rider and horse were unhurt

We did the BE100 class, which included a few Novice fences. He finished on his dressage of 32, in second place, despite ending up on the same score as the winner, who was frustratingly closer to the optimum time. Next we headed to Borde Hill. A course, which seems to be getting tougher. We started off with a good dressage of 29, but it all went downhill after a long hold in the show jumping arena. Spud just switched off, having two fences down and then never really got going cross-country, causing me to retire half way round - a very frustrating day. Next we head to Firle International.
Typical youngsters
Whoopi and Nessa are progressing slowly. Whoopi is still star pupil, taking everything in her stride, while Nessa is an immature brat, but I make sure I win every battle even if it takes a while.
A Summer of Pony Clubs
The summer had been filled with Pony Club. Isle of Sheppey spent a week at the fabulous Saywell Farm in Hollingbourne and never got bored of taking their ponies up the 3/4mile gallops. I taught West Kent Meopham at an intensive two day rally at Eaglesfield Equestrian Centre. Kent Border had pre Hickstead show jumping training at Warren Barn Farm and I’m currently at South of England Showground teaching at North West Kent’s camp. I am now the driver of an attractive white van, while I arrange the purchase of a new car. Although the van is growing on me, it is cheap to run and so I find myself wondering if I should purchase a pony instead. For once I have far too many empty stables that are crying out to be occupied!

Take back the reins this autumn
Happy Tongue Loose Ring warmth, salivation and acceptance of the bit. This kind, sensitive bitting system ensures you can maintain harmony with your equine without compromising on control. Not only that, but for horses who are particularly tricky, Bomber’s Bits offer a bespoke service so you can choose the exact mouth piece size and have it hand-made especially for your equine.
As the summer season heads towards its finale and hunter trials are running every weekend, some horses have got a little over-enthusiastic when it comes to jumping – making them harder to handle as they anticipate what comes next in the ring or on the cross country course! Having to take a pull, or circle because you are not in the driving seat wastes valuable time so World Wide Tack’s Stephen Biddlecombe gives us some tips for regaining your control to enhance accuracy and performance…

irst and foremost ensure that your horse is not becoming strong or over-zealous because of a physical issue. Ensure his saddle and bridle fit correctly and he is not in pain or discomfort from a muscular or skeletal issue.
Running Martingale with standing attachment
• If you ride a horse that is prone to rushing try to stay calm. If you get nervous, your horse will sense it and is more likely to become anxious, misbehave, bolt or try and run and jump faster.
• Make sure you have the right, correctly fitting, tack. Using equipment such as a martingale if your horse hollows or throws his head up when jumping can help make your job as a rider easier. But don’t use training aids as a ‘quick-fix’ nothing substitutes correct training; if in doubt consult your instructor. • If your horse is becoming a challenge to jump, go back to flat work schooling. Correct schooling is the foundation of good jumping so focus on establishing and maintaining a good canter and incorporate some simple pole work exercises into your routine. • Don’t be tempted to over bit, an excessively severe bit will simply damage the harmony between you are your equine and not improve their way of going.

Taking the bit by the reins
If you find that you need a little extra control, whether it is to maintain a steady, safe rhythm into a fence, or to simply help hone your technique when jumping more technical obstacles, such as skinnies, water or ditches, the right bit can make a significant difference. Bits range in strength from a simple snaffle, up to a Gag. The snaffle has little or no poll pressure but is designed to discourage fixing, blocking and leaning – while most riders would like to use a snaffle, some horses simply need a little more. Any extension above the mouthpiece will cause poll pressure, causing the horse to lower their head, giving the rider more control. This is commonly referred to as a ‘gag action’ and is offered in different styles, the English Gag, American Gag and Universal being just a selection. Any bit can cause harm if used incorrectly. If you are not sure whether a bit is right for your horse always consult your trainer or a bitting specialist before trying.
The right material
The material used to manufacture your horse’s bit can make a big difference to your control. Bomber’s Bits are made from blue sweet iron, which oxidises easily to provide

Lots to Celebrate! 50 years of SEIB
South Essex Insurance Brokers is currently celebrating 50 years of providing the public with insurance quotations. Started by a teenage Barry Fehler in 1963, the business remained family owned until 2008, when ownership passed to the Ecclesiastical. Barry was careful in choosing an organisation that would offer a seamless transition for the clients and would also continue the company’s generous support of equestrian charities. Barry still has his feet firmly on the ground at SEIB headquarters in South Ockendon and is the current Deputy Chairman. It is this down to earth and common sense approach to life that has helped SEIB, be innovative and creative in the policies they offer. As children we are constantly asking ‘why?’, but as adults we often forget to ask whether something is possible. Much of SEIB’s success has been built on Barry’s continual questioning of whether something can be improved and if so, how?
Innovative policies
Barry Fehler, founder of SEIB, captured on a rare moment away from the office
When SEIB first started insuring horses, there was only limited cover available and if a horse could no longer do his job, as a result of an injury, the only way to recover the insurance payment was through having the horse put to sleep (acknowledging the conditions of the Insurance Policy). In the 1970s Barry bought a very expensive show horse and it made him wonder what would happen if something happened to the horse and he could no longer compete. The injury might not mean he could never be ridden again, but it might mean he could no longer be shown at top level, the purpose for which he was bought. Having worked out a wording and the cover he wanted provided, Barry spoke to a number of underwriters in London and found one who was willing to underwrite the risk. This new cover was known as ‘Loss of Use’ cover. Since then SEIB has also negotiated cover for Veteran Horses and Ponies, with a 16 plus Policy, cover used to cut off at 16 years of age. They also developed Horsebox insurance, previously horse owners would have needed a Commercial Vehicle Policy. SEIB explained to underwriters that most horseboxes are probably only driven once a week, they are primarily driven by ladies at the weekend, with their most precious cargo on board, in addition they are often only drive a few miles away from home. Other covers included theft or straying, increased vets’ fees cover and breakdown cover that recovered the vehicle horse and passengers. Most of these improvements to horse insurance came through Barry wondering ‘what would we do if?’

Barry’s interest in show horses led him to buy Princes Street in 1973, a subsequent winner of the Show Hunter of the Year at Wembley. He saw him coming off the lorry at the South of England Show and thought “that is a beautiful horse”. He asked his producer if he was for sale and he was told “only if I can keep the ride on him”. From there was born a relationship with Melton Mowbray based showman, Vin Toulson, which was to last into the next decade. 1979 saw the arrival of Second Edition and Captain Pugwash, swiftly followed by Assurance, Fleet Street, Fairfield, BIBA, Privilege and The Elite.
The most famous and probably the most successful of these horses was the Heavyweight Hunter, Assurance, bought at the Horse of the Year Show as a four-year-old by Vin Toulson for Barry. John Rawding and Richard Bowers had judged the striking chestnut in Cornwall and tipped Vin off. He later said: “I saw him come off the lorry and walk away from me and I knew then.” Looking through the wonderful books compiled by Barry’s late wife, Jaslyn, it is easy to track all the horse’s entries and results, but the one which features the most is, Assurance. He was the Valegro of his day, his name appeared in the Times and Daily Telegraph, he featured on a weekly basis in Horse & Hound throughout the show season and the equestrian press devoted pages to him. He even had a double page pull-out poster in ‘Horse & Pony’ Magazine. In 1980 as a five-year-old he won the Waterford Crystal Point Championship, missing out by half a point in 1981, it was a title he won again in 1982. This was to be Assurance’s finest year, he won 18 championships, including the Winston Churchill Supreme Riding Horse at the Royal International and the coveted Horse of the Year Show title.

50 years of excellent service
Here’s to another 50 years! May I take this opportunity to thank you and all the staff at SEIB for the prompt, professional and sympathetic way you have dealt with this claim. Obviously we all pay for insurance hoping we will never need it, and when we do need it it is of course in distressing and stressful circumstances, so not having to worry about the bills was a huge relief.
K. Bruce There is more to consider when purchasing horse insurance than just price, of course this is an important consideration but a competitive policy from a reliable insurer could save you thousands in the long term. SEIB have been around for 50 years and will be at the end of the phone if you need to claim. SEIB offer competitive premiums that have risen at a slower rate than vets fees. Insurance with SEIB is better value than ever! One in four of our customers claim and the average is ÂŁ1,700. It can be expensive and difficult to move insurers particularly as your horse gets older so choose SEIB from day one and have the peace of mind of a company that will be here to help when you need us.

When to call your Vet If you are on a big yard or worked with lots of horses you will know that it is in their nature to have niggling ailments. Sometimes they just require time and rest, but on other occasions they will need to be examined by your vet, ASAP. Here Ed Lyall BVet Med CertEM (StudMed) MRCVS of the Arundel Equine Hospital shares his thoughts on some of the common problems seen in horses. 1 Lameness There are many causes of lameness in horses, most commonly involving the hoof, such as bruising, abscesses or puncture wounds. Foot problems are often identified by the presence of a stronger than normal digital pulse, if present this indicates that careful searching of the hoof for signs of trauma or penetration by such things as nails, followed by box rest and the application of a poultice is appropriate. Feeling the legs for the cardinal signs of inflammation – heat, pain and swelling may help localise the problem. If in doubt about the cause of lameness then the most important thing is box rest, firstly to stop the injury being exacerbated by

continued paddock exercise and also to allow the injury to heal. If there is obvious swelling then cold hose or apply cold therapy in the form of ice or a commercially available cooling boot or bandage two or three times per day and apply an appropriate bandage to the affected area. If a horse goes lame during exercise then it is likely to have a strain injury to a structure such as a tendon or it may have even chipped a bone in a joint or cracked a bone, as such application of a support bandage following cold therapy would be advisable until a vet is called to examine the horse straight away.
2 Colic There is little that can be done in terms of first aid. People say not to allow horses to go down or roll. I think it is important to stop them crashing around and hurting themselves in the stable, but if they are lying relatively quietly I would let them as all they are doing is getting themselves comfortable. Make sure there is enough bedding in the stable, allow water but withdraw any feed. Call your vet ASAP.
3 Choke Often horses look like they are trying to be sick, this not the case they probably have food material that has got stuck in the oesophagus. They will wretch and cough forcefully, they can poor saliva out of the nose. They may also get quite distressed. Keep them calm, withdraw any feed and if there is a visible swelling in the neck region carefully massage it with your hands. Call your vet, most chokes will actually resolve when the horse calms down and if this is the case try offering a little water for the horse to drink.
4 Snotty nose and coughing Horses regularly pick up respiratory infections, these are usually viral in origin and as such there is not really any specific treatment that is required. Observation of the character of the discharge is important – a smelly discharge down only one nostril may indicate a sinusitis infection following a tooth root abscess. A profuse yellowy green discharge from both nostrils may indicate a bacterial infection such as strangles – look for swelling under the jaw and in the throat region. Isolation of horses with respiratory infections is important, take the rectal temperature and call your vet for advice. Stop all forms of exercise until you are advised otherwise. Most respiratory infections will resolve without any intervention from a vet.
5 Eye problems A painful eye that is partly closed and squinting in sunlight with swollen lids requires a veterinary examination. A discharge from a comfortable eye can be treated by bathing in cold boiled water, many eye problems are simple conjunctivitis that may resolve, if in doubt call your vet.

irty Dobbin is one of the south east’s leading rug washing and repairing companies. established for many years, they wash, reproof and repair thousands of rugs each year. Dirty Dobbin says: “Look after your rugs and they will look after your pocket.” Top tip: Dirty Dobbin would recommend that all field rugs should be hung up to dry if they come in wet and any mud then lightly brushed off. the mud is abrasive and breaks down the fibres of the cloth and also detracts from the water-proofing. Washing, repairing and re-proofing of rugs at least once a year, means they will last much longer. ten years or more is not uncommon. stable rugs should be washed more regularly as they absorb urine when the horse lies down in its stable. If not washed regularly, it will cause the material to rot, as well as smelling strongly.

Autumn Laminitis FEED NEWS
With the changing seasons, it is hard to predict what your horse will need during autumn. If there is little grass and no more rainfall, then the chances are that he will need extra hard feed to supplement his hay and fibre intake. However, if there is rain partnered with sunshine, your horse (dependent on workload), may only need a good source of vitamins and minerals to supplement his grass and fibre diet. Beware Autumn Laminitis – warm weather and rainfall will result in the grass growing. If your horse is prone to laminitis or already carries a healthy amount of weight do keep an eye on him, possibly restricting his grass intake by using a grazing muzzle or by using electric fencing to make his paddock smaller. With the above in mind this month we are featuring feed and supplements to help you through the autumn months, with a particular emphasis on coping with autumn laminitis.
NAF Laminaze If your horse or pony is prone to Laminitis make sure improved Laminaze is part of his daily diet. Improved Laminaze has been reformulated so that the unique, totally natural formula now has increased benefits. It supplies nutrients to support the health of the hoof and antioxidants to flush excess toxins out from the system, as well as nutritional support specifically for the health of the gut. So the good news is, if your horse or pony is prone to laminitis you can make an important contribution towards improving his diet by ensuring new Laminaze is part of his daily feed. Top Tip: If you know your horse or pony is prone to laminitis, NAF recommend you introduce Laminaze into his diet in good time prior to the particularly high risk periods of either spring or autumn when a flush of rich, lush grass is most likely to be expected – this will help to prepare his system, and importantly, make sure Laminaze is well established as an integral part of the feed and management regime. www.naf-equine.eu/uk
TopSpec AntiLam TopSpec AntiLam provides highly effective nutritional support for horses and ponies prone to, being treated for, or recovering from laminitis. Most overweight ponies, and some overweight horses, are susceptible to laminitis. TopSpec AntiLam is a pelleted product, it looks like a balancer, is fed at the same rate as a balancer, but it is not a balancer. AntiLam is in fact a brilliant formulation combining several supplements with a high-fibre, very low-calorie carrier to make it palatable. Long-term trials at the TopSpec Middle Park Farm Laminitis Research Unit have shown that horses and ponies on restricted/poor grazing do not gain any additional weight when fed TopSpec AntiLam. It can also be used very successfully as part of a calorie-controlled diet when weight loss is required. This unique multi-supplement is so palatable that it can be fed out of the hand to horses and ponies at pasture to provide vital nutritional support. TopSpec AntiLam should be fed on its own with forage. The forage can be in the form of late-cut hay, unmolassed chops such as TopChop Lite, or controlled grazing, or a combination of these, depending on the individual circumstances. TopChop Lite is an unmolassed, natural product made from alfalfa, oat straw, a light dressing of soya oil and real mint. It is ideal for good doers that need their weight controlling. TopChop Lite Features: • Made from high temperature dried British alfalfa and high quality chopped oat straw with added real mint to improve palatability. Very lightly dressed with soya oil so that alfalfa leaves can be included in the chop. • Contains no molasses or any other sugar coating. • Exceptionally low in sugar and starch (including fructans). • ‘Non-Heating.’ • The alfalfa provides a natural source of antioxidants.
• • •
Dust-extracted. Contains no preservatives or artificial additives or colourings. Non-GM formula. TopChop Lite is of similar nutritional value to average quality hay but contains less sugar. The composition and consistency of this product make it ideal for horses and ponies prone to, being treated for, and recovering from laminitis. However it is suitable for all horses and ponies and perfect for good-doers and others prone to weight gain. www.topspec.com
Equine America Lamitreat A concentrated form for when you need it most. Lamitreat XXXtreme paste provides powerful anti-oxidants to quickly ‘mop up’ enzymes in the feet, alongside much needed targeted nutrition to encourage health and support the body’s system. Lamitreat XXXtreme paste should be given over a 14 day period, a total of five oral pastes (dosage can vary according to size of pony). Condition should then be maintained using Lamitreat Pellets to support a healthy enzyme level within the hooves and provide nutrients to the internal sensitive structures, as well as promoting external hoof wall condition. Lamitreat XXXtreme paste can also be used safely with an in-foal or lactating mare. www.equine-america.co.uk
Equine America Lamigard TRT Pellets Lamigard TRT is a highly effective supplement for the horse or pony which is prone to Laminitis, and can be used at high levels in the short term, and at a maintenance level for long term health. It will ensure your horses feet stay healthy all year round and will complement a careful feeding regime. Lamigard TRT contains powerful ingredients to help mop up excess free radicals which settle in the feet, supporting a healthy enzyme level within the hooves and providing nutrients to the internal sensitive structures, as well as promoting external hoof wall condition. It can also be fed to the in-foal and lactating mare. www.equine-america.co.uk
Blue Chip Lami Light Blue Chip balancers are the only feed balancers to contain the revolutionary new ingredient nucleotides. Nucleotides are the building blocks of DNA and RNA and are especially beneficial to laminitics as they help to repair the laminae, which are often damaged by laminitis attacks. Nucleotides also help to aid nutrient absorption which is beneficial to those horses or ponies on a restricted diet. Blue Chip uses a fruit derived form of natural Vitamin E in all their balancers which is 4-6 times more bioavailable than the synthetic form used in most other feeds. Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant and the cells first line of defence, again especially beneficial to horses or ponies with laminitis. www.bluechipfeed.com

FEED NEWS Marriage’s Laminitic Mix Laminitic Mix is an attractive coarse mix, high in fibre (22.5%) and low in calories, starch and sugar. The formulation will increase eating time and saliva production, helping to reduce the chance of stress and stomach ulcers. As well as a high quality vitamin and mineral package, this complete feed also contains biotin to encourage development of the hoof wall. Laminitic Mix is designed to help in the management of laminitis, it is not medicinal and is not a substitute for other forms of husbandry or veterinary care required for this condition. www.marriagefeeds.co.uk
British Horse Feeds Speedi-Beet Speedi-Beet from British Horse Feeds is approved by the Laminitis Trust. This highly nutritious sugar beet feed is unmolassed 95% sugar free and provides an excellent source of digestible fibre. Due to its unique manufacturing process Speedi-Beet can be soaked and ready to use in 10 minutes. Speedi-Beet is an ideal fibre source for horses prone to laminitis as it releases the required nutrients without generating large amounts of lactic acid. Including Speedi-Beet in the diet means owners can reduce the amount of hard feed and ‘risky’ forage sources. www.britishhorsefeeds.com
Mollichaff HoofKind Mollichaff HoofKind from HorseHage is a complete fibre feed designed for the nutritional support of horses and ponies prone to laminitis. Made from a balanced blend of high quality oat straw, dried alfalfa and fibre pellets, HoofKind is topped with a light dressing of soya oil with added vitamins and minerals, trace elements, antioxidants and biotin. It is low in starch and sugar, high in fibre and does not contain any cereals, and because it is very palatable, it’s great if you have a fussy feeder. It is also low in protein and calories which is excellent if your horse tends to get a bit ‘fizzy’. HoofKind contains all the vitamins and minerals your horse or pony needs along with added biotin to keep his hooves healthy, and so, unless he gets lots of hard work, you don’t need to add anything extra other than good quality forage such as High Fibre or Timothy HorseHage. www.horsehage.co.uk
Rowen Barbary Forage ‘n’ Fibre A second flush of grass growth often results in a peak in the number of cases of laminitis so it is essential to maintain bodyweight and feed a high fibre, low starch and sugar feed such as Forage ‘n’ Fibre. Cereal free and containing a blend of natural fibres Forage ‘n’ Fibre is ideal for feeding to horses that suffer from laminitis as well as good doers that need a low calorie diet and horses at rest or in light work. Fully balanced in essential vitamins, minerals and trace elements and with a light coating of Soya Oil Forage ‘n’ Fibre is ideal for everyday feeding to help promote overall health and vitality in horses that need a low energy diet. www.rowenbarbary.co.uk 70 Localrider SEPTEMBER 2013

TUNE INTO LAMINITIS BROADCAST
F
ocusing on the Cushing’s connection, the second ‘The Laminitis Revolution’ broadcast will feature presentations by some of the country’s leading experts on laminitis, Cushing’s disease and nutrition. The hour long programme will take place on Wednesday 9th October at 8pm as part of the nationwide ‘Talk About Laminitis’ disease awareness initiative, supported by the British Horse Society, Redwings and World Horse Welfare. The programme aims to educate owners about the hormonal diseases that cause up to 9 out of 10 laminitis cases and describes new data to dispel the myth that Cushing’s disease only affects veteran horses and ponies when in fact it can be responsible for the development of laminitis in adult horses of all ages. The informative topics discussed will be presented by: Dr Jo Ireland, veterinary epidemiologist at The Animal Health Trust, Newmarket, David Rendle, European specialist in equine internal medicine, Liphook Equine Hospital, and Dr Teresa Hollands, RNutr, equine nutritionist. Immediately following the programme there will be a live interactive Q&A session where questions you have emailed in will be answered by Jo, David and Teresa. This is an incredible opportunity for anyone who has struggled with laminitis to help understand why their horse or pony has suffered from this painful condition and how they can avoid it in the future.
Free laboratory fees Data over the past two years has indicated that the incidence of laminitis associated with Cushings is greatest in the autumn. For this reason, the highly popular ‘Talk About Laminitis’ disease awareness initiative is once again providing free Cushing’s test laboratory fees* until the end of November, so owners of laminitic horses and ponies can determine if Cushing’s is the cause. If your horse tests positive for Cushings the disease can then be treated and managed appropriately to avoid future painful and debilitating episodes. For further information, please contact your veterinary surgeon and visit www.talkaboutlaminitis.co.uk to download your free test voucher*.
WIN! JAMES HART SOLUTIONS Win James Hart Solutions supplements for a comfortable laminitic life. James Hart Solutions supplement range offers two solutions to support the horse or pony prone to laminitis. A compromised endocrine system as seen with Cushing’s Disease can predispose the horse to bouts of laminitis so Cushy Life is recommended daily for the endocrine system. For periodic or more permanent use, Devil’s Claw Flex offers the highest concentration of harpagoside – the principal active in the herb, Devil’s Claw, to optimise mobility. To enter send a postcard marked Cushy Life to the Localrider office. The winners will be the first three entries drawn after the closing date of 30th September 2013. Three readers will each receive 500ml bottle of Cushy Life and a 500ml bottle of Devil’s Claw Flex to kick-start a more comfortable laminitic life. FEED NEWS FEEDING FOR AUTUMN NAF In The Pink Senior In The Pink Senior is especially formulated to meet all the nutritional requirements of your older horse and is designed to give him all the support he needs to stay forever young. In The Pink Senior will: • Help balance the diet and the digestive system, to enable your horse maximise the value of his feed intake. • Provide pre and pro biotics for optimum support of the gut. • Donate all the vitamins and minerals required by the older horse for all round health. • Supply a unique combination of naturally sourced antioxidant ingredients to flush excess toxins from the system. • Support a ‘youthful spark’ in your horse in response to the selective herbal content of the formula. • Provide nutrients to support joint health. In The Pink Senior is recommended for all older horses and ponies, whether signs of age are obvious or not. It is designed to allow you and your best friend enjoy ‘the good old days’ together. www.naf-equine.eu/uk
NAF EnerG Iron rich EnerG, a fast acting, veterinary approved liquid formula, is designed to help improve the performance of your hardworking sports horse. Not only rich in iron, EnerG also contains the correct balance of copper and zinc, both important to maximise the benefits of supplementary iron, thus optimizing energy metabolism. EnerG also boasts an unrivalled spectrum of Vitamin B complexes, Vitamin C for its antioxidant qualities, and Vitamin K. Finally, EnerG comes with a great peppermint taste. New EnerG Shot is a concentrated nutritional blend of essential amino acids & bio-available iron to support energy metabolism, red blood cell production and help replace sweat losses. It comes in an easy to administer syringe, making it easy to feed as and when needed. EnerG Shot is a unique, scientifically advanced nutritional formula that readily provides a particular kind of high quality essential amino acids (Branch Chained Amino Acids – BCAAs). These are key to energy and performance, in that they are utilised for energy, particularly in the muscles, during exercise. While supporting the increased need for energy at times of peak performance, EnerG Shot also supplements the levels of BCAAs lost in sweat and fulfils the requirement for increased levels of iron required for healthy red blood cell production – fending off lethargy and a lowering of performance. EnerG Shot is designed for use when needed, so is ideal for competition or training. www.naf-uk.com
Aloeride With winter fast approaching, looking after your horse’s skin becomes imperative to avoiding seasonal issues. Alongside a change of coat, reduced grooming time and long periods of time spent with rugs on, skin welfare can often be compromised. Now, alongside daily grooming and good hygiene practices, Aloeride is a supplement, which can help maintain healthy skin and a shiny coat from the inside out. Aloeride is a totally palatable natural, certified organic aloe-vera supplement, which not only helps to promote healthy skin, condition hooves, encourage great coat shine and glossy locks, but also supports the immune system as well. www.aloeride.co.uk
Saracen Show Improver Pencils Prepare your horse to stay in top condition this winter – start the regime now with the Show Improver range from Saracen. With the onset of autumn imminent, many owners start to worry about keeping condition on their horses. This has been an amazing British summer, which means that the hay we will have for the coming winter will not only be plentiful but first signs are that it will also be good quality. This is great news as feeding plenty of quality forage is essential to keeping the horse’s digestive system in good working order. For owners who want to ensure their horse doesn’t begin to drop their condition this autumn/winter, a switch to Show Improver Pencils along with feeding a quality source of forage will have a positive effect. Show Improver Mix and Pencils are the ultimate in non-heating, conditioning feeds, whether for that extra condition for the sales or show ring, or to help put and keep condition on thin horses, ‘poor doers’, or for horses and ponies needing extra coat gloss. They are highly nutritious, energy dense rations formulated from a blend of quality ingredients containing a high level of calories provided by Saracen’s unique ‘Super-fibres’ and oils. In addition, a unique blend of EQUIJEWEL®, a high fat stabilised rice bran, helps ensure that the digestive system is not over burdened with starch and delivers a high calorie ration in a slow release form. www.saracenhorsefeeds.com
Blue Chip Feed Balancers Keeping your horse’s hooves healthy is vital at any time of the year, especially with the unpredictability of British weather, which can see prolonged periods of wet weather followed by a dry spell that can cause havoc with hooves. The best way of ensuring healthy hooves is by feeding a formulation which will guarantee your horse is getting the vital vitamins, minerals and nutrients needed to ensure strong, healthy hoof growth. Biotin, Zinc, Methionine and Copper all play significant roles in ensuring hooves grow well and all the Blue Chip feed balancers contain these elements in the unique hoof supplement, Soundhoof ™. The combination of these ingredients helps to maintain the laminae and enhance the formation of Keratin, an essential building block of the hoof wall. To ensure strong, healthy hooves, Blue Chip incorporates the recommended daily amount of Biotin in a bioavailable form. Feeding a Blue Chip feed balancer with SoundHoof will ensure your horse or pony not only looks fantastic, but will have healthy hooves all year round. www.bluechipfeed.com
Vetroimmune Just like in humans, when a horse has worked intensively their immune system may not be at its strongest, which is when they are susceptible to picking up viruses and infection. If a horse is travelling consistently and coming into contact with other equines, this risk is exacerbated. A strong immune system gives your horse the defence mechanism he needs to naturally do battle with many winter ailments, including mud fever, skin irritations, coughs and colds and respiratory infection to name but a few. By protecting your equine when they need it most, you can reduce the chance of time off, loss of condition and lack in performance due to a weakened immunity. Made by Animalife, the creators of Vetrofen and Vetroflex, Vetroimmune is a specially formulated performance nutraceutical providing equines with a highly bioavailable proprietary polysaccharide called BAP-8T, with added Vitamin C. Upon ingestion Vetroimmune travels to the small intestine where it interacts with immune cells located in Peyer’s patches in the small intestine. Here Vetroimmune mediates the release of signals to other immunocompetent cells and this results in a systemic immune response to invade and kill foreign bodies and regulate the body’s recovery response. www.animalife.co.uk

Make flies fly away.
Simply add Blue Chip’s fast-absorbing liquid garlic to your horse’s regular feed. As well as having many other health benefits Garliq is released through pores in your horse’s skin. This process deters flies and midges, helping to keep your horse happy and stress-free this summer.
