Welcome 30 A

52

t last the sun is shining and the outdoor season has started. I love this time of year when readers start sending in pictures of their horses and telling me their goals for the forth coming season. We have some wonderful stories this month. One of my favourite is about Bunty Douglas and the Fielden Stud. Fifty years of breeding and bloodlines and yet still Bunty can trace many of her ponies back to a mare she bought in 1958. Jan Carmichael runs the day to day side of the stud now and if our feature has whet your appetite to discover more, they have a Stallion Parade and Open Day on Saturday 5th April. Turn to page 10 to find out how it all began. Another favourite of mine this month is a different tale of successful breeding. I was interviewing Molly Key after her trip to Merrist Wood for the British Dressage Regional Finals when I discovered that all three of the horses she was riding were bred by Dinah and Charles Macdonald out of their successful event mare, Polly’s Tiara. Two are full brothers and one a half-brother and all three event successfully too. Turn to page 60 to read more. Over 30 combinations from the South East have qualified for the British Dressage NAF Five Star Winter Dressage Championships. We caught up with a few of the BYRDS riders who are heading to Hartpury. Turn to page 61 to find out who has qualified. And lots of luck to you all! Overall this issue is about preparing for the competition season ahead, whether it is getting down to the nitty gritty with thermal imaging (pages 48-49), deciding what to feed your horse to give you that winning edge (from page 63), or just how to groom to perfection and look your best on the day (from page 42), we hope that you will find a few tips to help you have a wonderfully successful time. And remember if you do win a prize or just have a fantastic time email the office and let us know. Finally this month we report the retirement from competition of Francis Whittington’s great eventer, Sir Percival III. We have followed Percy’s eventing career over the years and shared the highs, the lows and the heart-stopping moments, which made him the character his fans adored. Turn to page 36 to look back at Percy’s dazzling career.

World Horse Welfare

Flicka is currently looking for a new home

T

o help widen the appeal of its rehoming scheme, the largest of its kind in the UK, World Horse Welfare has launched a new category that it hopes will be of interest to those with sufficient horse experience - ‘project Horses and ponies’. in the past year World Horse Welfare has had to cope with a huge increase of new horses coming into its rescue and rehoming Centres, 73% (or 140 extra horses) meaning 325 compared to 185 in 2012. The charity now has around 340 horses residing at its centres and desperately needs to rehome some to make space for others that are in need of urgent rescue and rehabilitation. The charity knows that there are hundreds of people out there with the skills that could help, and in return gain a real sense of satisfaction from the long-term development of a horse that may have had a terrible start in life. “These horses will need a rehomer who has the time, patience and knowledge to bring the horses on in a rare opportunity that means the rehomer will reap the rewards of rehabilitating a neglected horse themselves.” said Tanya Element, World Horse Welfare’s UK Support Officer.

Silhouette Insignia Monoflap Jumping Saddle

Getting you closer to your horse for ultimate control, comfort and stability The Silhouette Insignia is a beautifully crafted wool flocked close contact monoflap jumping saddle designed to enhance the contact and communication between horse and rider. The saddle is lightweight, weighing around 6kg, and perfectly balanced to maximise performance. The wide wool flocked panels allow adjustment as necessary for a perfect fit to maintain freedom and comfort for the horse plus balance, stability and security for the rider. It is covered in pure calfskin leather making it supersoft and durable. The pommel shape has the clearance needed to fit high withered horses such as Thoroughbreds and also those with a wide wither confirmation i.e. Warmbloods. The set up of the blocks allows you to also ride longer without throwing the lower leg back making it the only jumping saddle we know of that allows you to do groundwork as well as jumping. It is therefore also an excellent saddle for eventing. Exclusive to us in the South East it retails at £800.

Treating horses with McTimoney

SPILLERS remains at forefront of laminitis research Laminitis is thought to affect around 3% of horses and ponies in the UK and the consequences can be devastating. That’s why SPILLERS, as part of the WALTHAM International Research Consortium, is leading the way with international studies to give horse owners practical support and, in the longer term, to help make this debilitating and sometimes fatal condition a disease of the past. Current, ground-breaking projects range from practical studies that have an immediate bearing on the day-to-day management of the laminitis-prone, to fundamental scientific research to help find the missing pieces of the complex laminitis puzzle. This year the four main areas of research for SPILLERS and the WALTHAM International Research Consortium are: • How best to reduce the water soluble carbohydrate (WSC) content of hay to make it more suitable for the laminitis prone, although analysis will still be recommended. • The role of insulin in the development of laminitis to help better understand and identify individuals that may be at higher risk of the disease. • The role of blood supply in laminitis to help discover whether the way blood vessels behave in some horses and ponies may have an impact on the development of the condition. • The relationship between laminitis and obesity to understand further the effects that obesity has on the metabolism of some horses and ponies but not others. Clare Barfoot RNutr and the research and development manager at SPILLERS said: “Our work with the WALTHAM International Laminitis Consortium places SPILLERS at the forefront of laminitis research. This means we can provide the most up-to-date advice to horse owners to help them care for their horses and ponies better. Such research also means that SPILLERS HAPPY HOOF is the one of the safest feeds for horses and ponies prone to laminitis.” www.spillers-feeds.com

Why you should talk to SEIB about your insurance... On asking how can we help you? This is the response we received from Jane Robinson one of our valued clients:

I am writing to commend the customer service I received from Anthony in relation to my equine insurance policy. I called last week in the hope of finding a way of reducing my premium without losing essential cover. Anthony was extremely helpful, patient and professional. Anthony took the time to go through every aspect of my policy with me, exploring how I might make savings on my policy and explaining what impact such changes would have on my cover. He was extremely knowledgeable and courteous. I felt as if he was truly interested in resolving my query, and bearing in mind I was essentially looking for a cost saving I was pleasantly surprised by this. All of this combined, and the resolution found, reassured me that SEIB is the right insurer for my horse. After this encounter I feel confident that should I need to utilise my policy I would receive the same efficient and effective customer service. Thank you.

It is all very well getting quotes on a website but when what you truly need is professional advice call SEIB. We are independent brokers have a whole range of equestrian insurance products and are here to help you. urnett Anthony B erwriter

Grand Meadows products re-branded!

Mel Wiles’ Cob x ID, Charlie

By Stephen Biddlecombe of Equine Management

Collagen for joint challenges

After a spell of lengthy consultation with EU bodies regarding labelling, the popular Grand Meadows range of high-spec feed supplements for horses is now available once more, and has been re-branded and re-labelled.

In 2010 it was reported by America’s Murray State University in Kentucky that not only is ‘type II collagen’ (the predominant form of collagen in the cartilage that lines the ends of the bones inside of moveable joints) effective for arthritic horses, but it also might be more effective than glucosamine and chondroitin sulphate. Ramesh C. Gupta carried out a study at the University that saw horses selected based on signs of lameness, joint effusion, reduced joint flexibility, crepitation of the joint on manipulation, and increased lameness upon flexion. Horses with these signs were then randomised into one of five groups that included a placebo.

T

he american range is now the most compliant and transparent in the industry. equine Management ltd exclusively distributes the grand Meadows range, including the best-selling grand Ha Synergy joint supplement, which the distributor believes to be the highest-specification joint supplement available. grand Meadows has been required to provide unprecedented, in-depth proof of its products’ origins, ingredient provenance and business best practice, and has passed with flying colours.

THE SCIENCE BEHIND GRAND MEADOWS™ Grand H.A. Synergy provides a comprehensive matrix of powerful ingredients offering a new dimension in joint health. Grand H.A. Synergy provides crucial support for healthy joint structure and

Horses supplemented with all three doses of type II collagen had significant improvements in their condition. Horse supplemented with glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate also showed a significant decrease in pain. However, the improvement in condition was not as profound as horses in the type II collagen groups. Gupta and his colleagues therefore suggested that type II collagen was “more effective than glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate in arthritic horses.” The study, “Therapeutic guaranteed analysis efficacy of undenatured type-II collagen (UC II) in comparison to glucosamine and chondroitin in arthritic horses,” was published in the Journal of Veterinary Pharmacology and Therapeutics.

Mel Wiles owns Charlie, a coloured 17hh gypsy Cob x iD with conformational issues in his hind legs. “He was bought as my only horse to do low level dressage and hacking, but suddenly went lame,” she says. “after a full lameness work up by a very experienced vet, including full x rays and ultra-sound scans, he was found to have suspensory ligament tears in his left hind and severe arthritis of the fetlock joint in both hind legs. i was instructed to keep Charlie on box rest, and through research, found grand Meadows’ grand Ha Synergy product, which contains collagen. Charlie started the supplement and we followed his exercise programme; he was not medicated by the vets. Five months later and Charlie was showing great progress - i was instructed to begin riding again. When we had our final lameness work up, scans showed the ligament has repaired to that of a “normal” horse. The vet commented with regards to the arthritis that “his injections have lasted for a long time, haven’t they?”, to which i responded that Charlie hadn’t had any injections or medication of any kind. The vet was astounded! i believe wholeheartedly that his rapid and full recovery was due to the grand Ha Synergy supplement he has been having and the excellent rest and recuperation programme i was given by my vets.”

Are you planning to build a new yard this year?

If winter has taken its toll on you yard, now’s a great time to plan a new yard that will keep operating throughout the toughest conditions. Scotts of Thrapston, a leading timber stabling manufacturer, with 90 years of experience, have come up with some essential pointers:

T HE M ASTERS IN S TABLING

Location

Make sure the location works for deliveries, muck removal and visits from farriers and vets. Give thought to prevailing wind; North facing stables get limited sun, creating a damp, unhealthy environment.

Planning

Timber stables are considered more aesthetic by planners than brick, but do your research and get a feel for what your local authority likes, a particular roof tile or colour of wooden cladding.

Budgeting

Remember to take all the figures into account - ground works, drainage, electricity supply and fittings. When specifying, do not cut too many corners so the project becomes a false economy.

Timing

Major problems happen when misjudgements are made on the time needed to achieve each step. Scotts advises six months to get to the point of being able to start the build. Scotts recognises the importance of personal service and are always prepared to pass on their experience. Call Zoe or James on 01832 732366 or visit www.scottsofthrapston.co.uk

Fashion on a budget

By Lucy Nicholas

I

f you are looking to splurge your cash this spring on some riding wear, then you will be pleased to know there are some great offers to be had to help stretch your pennies and pounds further. One of the best ways to shop wisely is to purchase slightly out of season - if you buy last Autumn’s stock now, you will find the garments are cheaper than the new spring/summer 2014 items, although they are exactly the same weight and composition, as a warm Autumn day and a chilly Spring day are very similar! Naturally when purchasing riding wear, look out for clever design elements like a bottom zipper that can be unzipped when in the saddle, longer sleeves that allow for warm wrists when riding with the arms bent, and close fitting garments that don’t flap about. Breathable materials are of course comfortable on a chilly day that may see you working up a sweat in the saddle. Designers are always coming up with clever additions for your comfort, such as adjustable drawstrings to allow for different thickness of layers, or wrist gaiters to exclude draughts. Think about the care of the garments too, choosing machine washable material that will wash and dry quickly. Keep your fleeces to under-layers, as they do attract hay and dirt from your yard chores. Colour wise, the typical equestrian / countryside colours are still fashionable, and probably always will be - chocolate browns, dark greens and sky-blues are perennial favourites, reflecting the natural colours of the countryside. For kids, bold primary colours for boys and purples, lilacs and pinks for girls continue to be popular.

Our favourite Horseware products... These are available at www.thesaddleryshop. co.uk with free standard delivery on orders over £75, and delivery of just £4.99 for orders £75 and under. Safely shopping online Choose an online site with fully SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) secure and PCI (Payment Card Industry) compliancy, so you can shop with complete confidence. SSL is a standard security technology for establishing an encrypted link between a server and website. SSL compliancy means that customer data is protected as it is being transmitted to and from a company’s own server; all reputable retailers that accept credit card transactions should make proper use of SSL certificates to make these transactions more secure, especially as fraud losses on UK credit and debit cards have risen by 17% in the last year, with over 216 million pounds’ worth of card fraud being committed in the first six months of last year, according to Financial Fraud Action UK.

cross country schooling tips

Following on from our great guide to schooling venues in the region, we know that readers are cracking on with XC schooling this spring. Here are my top tips for getting the most from your cross country schooling:

By riding instructor Michaela Huntington

1

Cross country riding is risky - and this rider has forgotten their up-to-standard body protector, which is advised for everyone

Try and find a consistent, positive pace around the course – it can be fast or slow, but ideally needs to be consistent. Maintain impulsion and connection from leg to hand. Once you have established your ‘base’ speed, you can take your horse up or down the gears when required, for example slowing down on the approach to an upright. Many riders have what they call a ‘between fences gallop’.

Photography By Jules

2

A common mistake is to be too far forward in the saddle in between fences - the upright position is important in crosscountry riding, as it gives you more stability. Also, if you are ahead of the movement when you jump, e.g. if the horse cat leaps, you may lose stability or risk a fall.

3

Start to alter your ‘between fences gallop’ at least ten strides from a fence, so you can establish a positive canter, suitable for the fence in question, and achieve the best rhythm.

4

Maintain straightness at all times on your approach – the horse’s shoulder must stay behind his head – if not, he could run out. Maintain your leg aids.

5 6

Don’t panic about seeing a stride - if you have a good, positive canter, you’ll be in balance and can jump it out of a good stride.

Even if you have a very reliable horse, don’t completely trust the horse to jump the fence – it is correct and advisable to be positive, but a ‘gung ho’ approach leads to sloppiness. Make sure you are still asking the right questions and giving the right cues, rather than just ‘pointing and going’. It is common to see riders ‘giving up’ at the point of take off, rather than committing to the jump!

The RS-tor is useful for downhill riding and drop fences

Maintain straightness, with the horse’s shoulder behind his head, for a straight jump.

Try and find a consistent, positive pace around the course

7

For water jumps and ditches, sit up! Exaggerate your ‘safety position’ on your approach, particularly with an inexperienced horse – eg, elevate your shoulders and make sure the weight is down into your heels.

8

Don’t back off a ‘scary’ water complex - approach from a positive, forward-going stride. Don’t rush in all guns blazing however, as this may cause the horse to stumble once they are in the complex, as the water naturally slows them down.

9 10 11

See the RS-tor at Libby’s International’s stand: South of England Horse Trials (from 12/4).

You may need to slip the reins if you are jumping down into water, but don’t slip them so far that you can’t steer. Remember your up-to-standard body protector and riding helmet for safety in the saddle!

Use an RS-tor riding safety aid - keep it on your saddle at all times, for safety and security. NB - you can still hold it at the same time as slipping the reins through your hand, e.g. when jumping down a drop. Many riders without RS-tors may struggle to stay in balance in this scenario, as they take up the reins, which may be slippery, and try to establish their position, especially on a forward-going horse. If the horse stumbles while the rider is imbalanced, the rider is likely to fall. However, the RS-tor allows the rider to stay in the saddle safely; it is perfect for riders with young, inexperienced, strong or excitable horses. You will also find it boosts rider confidence when riding downhill - the differing gradients on a course require different riding techniques, together with balance and obedience from your horse. Downhill, the horse has a tendency to go on his forehand, and balance could easily be lost! (Visit www.rstor.co.uk for product info and also check out our You Tube channel, where we have downloaded a brand new video - visit http://www.youtube.com/user/TheRstor and click on ‘RS-tor for cross country schooling’. EVENTING NEWS Laura and Spud at the Mid Surrey Farmers Drag Meet

Laura Powell writes...

What an eventful month! We are now basking in sunshine, the fields are dry and the horses are out naked munching on plenty of luscious green grass – a difference from four weeks ago when all the events were cancelling due to the floods. Spud and I went out on our maiden Meet with the Mid Surrey Farmers Drag as they were meeting locally. Although the going was deep I didn’t appreciate quite how deep. At the first fence, a nice upright set of rails I aimed my seasoned hunter at the large set rather than the small ones alongside, that most people had jumped. He left a leg firing me into the mud! Marvellous! He then obviously carried on with the rest of the field without giving me a second thought. Luckily one of my clients (on her 12.2hh show pony) caught him for me and we remounted and carried on. Needless to say after wacking that fence fairly hard his jumping technique improved and we carried on down a few more lines before retiring covered in mud. Two days later (a bit battered and bruised) I headed down to a Nick Turner Clinic at Emily Baldwin’s new base in Mayfield. Having never had a lesson with Nick I was a bit apprehensive, but eager at the same time, due to his impressive CV. I took two horses that belong to my partner. A five-year-old grey gelding called Flash that came off the boat from Ireland just 10 days before and another five-year-old who we’ve had a while whose done a fair bit called, Gatsby. Flash was super. He settled immediately and jumped everything with ease like a typical Irish horse – yeah! Gatsby was pleased to be out and Nick had me riding him really forward in a big canter, which I struggled with. He is a big rangy horse, about 16.3hh, with tons of movement, mainly due to all the foreign blood in him. I panicked with hooking disease. All was going well until I pulled to a rather wide square oxer,

hindering the horse and causing it to peck leaving me eating sand. Disaster! Having not fallen off for 18 months I’ve now hit the deck twice in three days! Despite this Nick was brilliant and I shall be returning for some more sessions. Trying not to dwell on things I took Spud to Royal Leisure the following day and jumped two good rounds in both the Discovery and the 1.05m classes. Remembering not to hook and if in doubt, in the words of Nick Turner, “KLF” (the first word is Kick!). The next outing in that very busy week was a quick trip to Littleton Manor for a whizz round the cross country. Dad was there on a clinic so I had a quick jump round on Spud who felt brilliant. Dad and Harvey meanwhile, were also on flying form, going at a good pace to everything. So much so that Harvey bounced the one stride ditch to brush, caught a back leg and fired Dad into the dirt. Well at least that’s the third fall out of the way. All seemed ok and he quickly got back on and jumped some more. It was only later that evening he gave into the pain and went to A&E where they told him he’d fractured his arm in three places. I did say it had been eventful! Hopefully Spud and I will make it to our first BE event of the season at Munstead. I just have to squeeze in another cross country schooling sessionand we should be good to go!

Racing News Sussex victory at Cheltenham Throughout the National Hunt season Localrider has enjoyed following the career of Sire De Grugy. Trained in West Sussex by Gary Moore, the eight-year-old gelding finally hushed his doubters when he dominantly won the Cheltenham Festivals Queen Mother Champion chase by six lengths. For owner Steve Preston and family the road to festival victory started on his fiftieth birthday, when his son gifted him £2,000 to begin the funds to Sussex based Jamie Moore rode Sire De Grugy purchase a racehorse. to victory in the Queen Mother Champion Steve had always Chase at the dreamed of owning a Cheltenham horse, and so pooled Festival further funds and asked Gary to take a share in the horse. The family fairytale continued as Gary’s son, Jamie, patiently and superbly rode Sire De Grugy to victory. While the winners enclosure was turned into a sea of red and blue scarves (Steve’s colours are in homage to his other passion, Crystal Palace football team) and jockeys emerged from the weighing room to salute their popular colleague, the home of jumps racing became one massive family celebration.

Local Success Story

Lynn Russell and Stealth Project

This month Lynn Russell tells Localrider about one of her many re-trained racehorses. Racehorses name & age: Stealth Project, Nine-years-old. Purchased where & when? Ascot Sales, 2010. Racing history: Trained by Alex Hales and came out of racing in October 2009 due to injury. Biggest success so far: He has been Champion Racehorse at Aintree two years on the trot and I have ridden him on the racecourse! Qualified and placed four times at the ROR Championship at Hickstead as well as finishing third at HOYS. Any advice for anyone wanting to retrain a racehorse: Time is most important, don’t hurry them. First have their back checked then turn them away for a couple of months to chill, before you re-start. If you are struggling get help before a small problem becomes a big one!

Would you do it again? I already am. I bought Decimate at Ascot last July. If you own an ex-racehorse and would like to feature in this column email: alex@localrider.co.uk

Are you wanting to cut a dash in the dressage arena this spring? Here UK on-line retailer Dressage Deluxe’s MD and personal shopper, Alison Nye-Warden, gives the low down on ‘what’s hot and what’s not’ this season.

Style challenge

Dressage Deluxe is one of the UK’s leading on-line retailers focusing on offering the ultimate and must-have brands and trends sourced from all over Europe. With a large international customer base, Dressage Deluxe stocks everything for the discerning rider. A keen dressage rider herself, Alison has plenty of top tips to ensure that you catch the judge’s eye for all the right reasons.

The perfect jacket

The Epsom Jacket is Your show jacket is probably perfect for the most expensive item of the pearcompetition clothing that you shaped rider will buy, so try and invest in the best that you can afford and a jacket that will stand the test of time. It’s important that you choose a style that suits your body shape and size. Remember that whilst you might be a size 12 in one brand, you may very well be size 14 in another, and if you buy one, which is too tight, it will probably gape horribly around the front, where it is too small. If you are a classic pearshape, choosing the right length of jacket will be crucial, especially if you have short legs. The most flattering jacket for you will be one that sits just below your bottom, such as this Epsom Jacket. If a jacket is too long, when you are sat on your horse it will look like you are wearing a dress and also make your legs look even shorter.

Beautiful breeches

It is important to choose the right style of breeches for your shape. Petite riders can wear high-waisted breeches which help to make their legs look longer. Be warned, no matter how petite you are, unless you have a washboard tummy, avoid breeches with pleats at the front, as these can add pounds onto tummies. Also steer clear of side pockets on breeches, as these will also add extra inches to your hips.

It’s an illusion

These days it is becoming a little easier to find long leather boots to accommodate most standard calf lengths, with optional zips, which can add an inch or two to the boots’ fit. Although finding a pair for women with ‘generous’ calf proportions, coupled with a shorter length, still poses a problem. In which case, often the only way to find the perfect fit is to invest in a made to measure pair of boots, which will last you a lifetime, if you look after them well. Konig Boots offer wonderful illusion tricks that can help lengthen or slim the rider’s leg, so shop around for boots that could help transform your legs into those of a super model. If you are competing in grassroots dressage and own a good pair of boots and leather chaps, these will be perfectly acceptable to compete in.

Beat the bounce

Ensure that you also buy a good decent sports bra, as nothing looks worse than a rider bouncing all over the place in the saddle. If you are big busted, then go for a jacket that has plain buttons, opposed to gilt or embossed buttons, which could draw attention to your bust. Use tricks to take the judge’s eyes away from problem areas, re-directing them to other parts of your outfit. For example, draw attention to your neck with a stylish elegant brocade stock or a beautiful stock pin. Don’t forget if you need some style advice, our personal shopper service is totally free and could end up saving you a fortune.

bsorbine sponsors leading show producer Jayne Ross and the team at Carol Bardo’s, Moor Farm. Jayne and Carol have won numerous Championships and stood Supreme of Show at both HOYS and RIHS over the years. Here Jayne Ross shares her top tips for the show ring. Plaiting is always done on the day of the show so they remain neat with no stray hairs. An odd number of plaits along the neck gives a balanced look. Small dainty plaits are for hacks and riding horses, while hunters can have slightly larger plaits. Each horse is plaited to suit his individual shape to help enhance their neck. Jayne and the team discuss what type of plaits a horse needs before starting to plait. Bathing the day before a show is a good idea, but many horses will get a stable stain or two, so it is sometimes necessary to bath the legs again, in the morning. Jayne insists on using a good quality horse shampoo such as ShowSheen 2 in 1 Shampoo, to prevent dry, scurfy skin. White legs are finished off with a chalk block. For last minute cleaning, use ShowSheen Stain Remover and Whitener, which is a godsend for removing stains. Trimming whiskers under the jaw and inside and around the ears with a quiet battery clipper gives a sharp, clean look. Tails are pulled and trimmed to suit the type of horse and the class he is competing in. Hooves, the horses have their feet oiled regularly with Absorbine Hooflex Liquid Conditioner to keep them in good condition and then Absorbine SuperShine Hoof Polish is used at shows – we are careful to use black polish on black feet and clear polish on white feet. This does sometimes lead to two different pots being used on the same horse if he has black front feet and white hind ones. Tack is chosen carefully to suit the horse and Jayne uses a discreet numnah. The horses will wear a black, brown or white numnah depending on their colour. There is often a discussion amongst the team to decide which tack will look best. Final touches are very important and Absorbine products will give your horse the top class finish required to make him sparkle at any show. For a gleaming coat, ShowSheen should be applied over the body except for the saddle patch and to finish off, apply Horsemans One Step tack cleaner and conditioner to the bridle so it gleams in the ring. rider safety

Safer Riding

The leading brands in safety clothing for horse and rider are continually researching with the aim of improving safety equipment. They need to combine safety features with products which look good and are ultimately comfortable to wear. If you are looking to purchase a new riding hat or body protector then make sure you familiarise yourself with these handy tips from Gatehouse Hats and Rodney Powell Body Protectors.

If the hat fits, wear it When it comes to riding hats, a good fit is crucial for safety and comfort and it is therefore advisable to buy from a retailer with trained hat-fitting staff to ensure your purchase fits perfectly. Style your hair in the same way that you would when riding and, if you wear long hair in a bun or pony tail they should be worn low so as not to interfere with the fit of your helmet. Try on different makes and models to find the brand that best fits the shape of your head and only make your purchase when you are fully satisfied that the hat is right for you. Hats are non-returnable after they have left the premises and buying riding helmets online is a risky business for this very reason.

Body Protectors Helen Riley, from Rodney Powell Body Protectors, shares her top tips for buying and adjusting your body protector. Lucinda Fredericks is her model. • Buy from a qualified retailer that holds the BETA Safety Certificate issued by the British Equestrian Trade Association. BETA 2009 Level 3 (purple label) is suitable for most riders. • A snug fit keeps the body armour secure and allows warmth from your body to quickly penetrate the heat responsive foam so that it moulds to your shape. • The red guide marks on waist and shoulder fastenings should be completely covered when done up.

Which Standard? BSI Kitemark – The British Kitemark symbol is the trademark of the British Standards Institute and ensures consistent quality of items sold in the UK. BSI requires that helmets are produced under a rigorous system of regulation including batch testing, audit tests and factory inspections. BSEN 1384 2012 – Testing at this level is less demanding than for other current standards consequently, helmets carrying BSEN1384 might be lighter in weight and may feature larger ventilation slots due to the limited penetration tests required. This standard is recognised and accepted by most competition bodies within the Snell hemispherical anvil testing UK and Europe, although some Pony Clubs may request that their members wear only PAS015 helmets and above. PAS015 2011 – Helmets holding the PAS015 standard tend to be a little more bulky in appearance compared to those with BSEN1384 only. This is because PAS015 helmets requires a higher penetration test, plus additional tests of crush resistance, stability and a horseshoe (hazard) anvil test simulating a fall onto a ledge or edged surface. Recent changes mean that PAS015 now requires an average lower transmitted force reading and a higher lateral rigidity test. Snell E2001 – The most demanding standard and therefore well suited for serious competition use. Snell E2001 includes all aspects of PAS 015 but with more severe impact drops and increased crush testing. Snell also includes a rounded hemispherical anvil to simulate Snell penetration test a fall onto an uneven surface, plus a more severe horseshoe anvil. Snell testing is conducted over a much wider area, in fact right to the lower edge of the helmet; the weakest and most flexible part of the shell. Ongoing research and development has resulted in riders being offered an excellent range of safety headwear that can be correctly fitted by trained retail staff. Even so, it should be remembered that no two accidents are the same and that the protection offered by any helmet depends on the circumstances of the accident. Wearing a helmet will not always prevent death or long-term disability but those involved in hat design share a common goal: to produce the safest, most wearable and comfortable riding helmets possible. This article has been supplied by Gatehouse Hats. Visit www.gatehouserange.co.uk for further information.

Gatehouse RXC1 Jockey Skull

This new top-of-the-range riding helmet holds triple safety standards, BSEN1384, PAS015 and SnellE2001, as well as the BSI Kitemark. Snell is the highest manufactured equestrian helmet safety standard in the world and includes a test that simulates a rider falling into a fence rail, or having a secondary hit by a horse’s hoof. Offering excellent levels of ventilation, the RXC1 is the only jockey skull with a removable, washable lining for complete comfort and hygiene. Mesh covered ventilation zones allow through flow of air while the soft, padded leather harness further enhances wearer comfort. Available in sizes xsmall (53-54cm) to xlarge (61-62cm) Price: £185.00. Contact Westgate EFI on 01303 872277 for stockists or visit www.gatehouserange.co.uk

• On zipped body protectors, it’s easier to undo the side fastenings before doing up the zip. Adjust the sides for a close fit. • The back of the body protector should not touch the saddle – the amount of clearance may vary depending on saddle design and chosen discipline (e.g. eventing, where riders lean back significantly over drop fences). • Treat your body protector with respect. Undo fastenings and store flat when not in use. Ensure that your body protector fits correctly and you will soon forget that you have it on.

Lucinda Fredericks Event rider, Lucinda Fredericks, came to prominence through her partnership with the famous little mare, Headley Britannia. Together, this charismatic duo won Burghley, Badminton and Kentucky CCI4*s, and Brit remains the only mare ever to win all three events. The pair also hold the record for the best ever finishing penalty score at 4* level of 32.3. While Brit was officially retired from top level competition at Badminton Horse Trials in 2013, Lucinda remains competitive with a good string of horses and has recently been named on the Equestrian Australia Rio 2016 training squad.

We are all aware of the practicality of wearing these products during the winter months, but were you aware that drivers may also not be able to see you when the sun is low in the sky during spring and autumn days, or when it’s at its highest in the summer. The most popular high visibility colour is yellow, which is perfect for dark days, but it can become obscured if you are riding through trees, or tree-lined streets as it blends Protect you and your horsein with the green. Finding the

hot

This shows a typical image, which is taken whilst the body is being scanned. The red area can indicate tightness, but the images will be interpreted by Maddi and in her report she will explain exactly what the image is showing.

spots As horse owners we become very intuitive to how our horse is feeling and generally know if they are looking under the weather or are just not moving quite the same as normal. There are a whole range of specialists including farriers, dentists and physios to help keep our horses in top shape, but just imagine how much easier their jobs would be if you knew what was going on beneath your horse’s skin. With the help of Veterinary Thermal Imaging you can get a pretty good picture. Fiona Rafferty met up with thermographer Maddi Burchell AISRB to find out more. What is thermal imaging?

What is involved?

This is typical of the colouring shown on the veterinary thermal images. The red colouring is not of immediate concern as it is fairly symmetrical. It would be more concerning if it was down the right side but not the left.

The most important thing to remember is the thermal imaging is looking for hot spots and cold spots in your horse. So prior to Maddi coming to image a horse, it should be brought in from the field, groomed and left to relax in its stable. You will receive pre-imaging guidelines, which explain why. But it all makes sense, for example grooming your horse will increase its circulation and therefore could give a misleading reading. The whole process is very relaxed and is not intrusive at all. My horse had a full body scan. We are lucky we have indoor

school (useful for maintaining a regular temperature, but a stable will do). Maddi stood and took pictures of the various sections of my horse on both sides with her Veterinary Thermal Imaging camera, which is just like a digital camera, but is probably even quieter. The good thing about it is if your horse moves it doesn’t matter as those images can be deleted. Maddi then processes the images and interprets them and will normally send a report through within 48 hours.

Thermal Imaging maps heat patterns across an animal’s body, highlighting hot and cold spots. Hot spots show areas of increased circulation, which could indicate inflammation and are often seen overlying an injury. Cold spots show a reduction in blood supply, which can be due to swelling, thrombosis, scar tissue and increased tone in the nervous system.

Thermal Imaging for Dogs Thermal imaging of dogs is very good at showing up areas of muscle strain as well as arthritis. It is very popular with owners of dogs competing in dog agility competitions. These dogs normally already have physiotherapists and just as with the horses the reports are used to indicate the areas which need working on. Maddi’s husband has working gun dogs and she routinely scans them just as a precaution in case they have over exerted themselves or strained a muscle whilst working. A whole body scan of a dog costs £65 and one anatomical area costs £40.

What did I think? Listening to Maddi talk about case studies and horses she has been able to help, whether it was a badly fitting saddle or a more sinister bone cyst, I can see how Veterinary Thermal Imaging can help us understand more clearly why our horses might be behaving differently. A full back scan costs £30 and as well as showing up tightness through the back, information which will be useful to your physio, as she will be able to see more clearly the areas to work on next time she visits, it will also reveal any pressure points caused by your saddle. If this is the case, the report will suggest having your saddle checked by a saddler. Thermal Imaging can indicate problem areas three weeks prior to clinical symptoms and the biggest benefit of this information is that if there is early indication of a problem in a tendon a rehabilitation programme can be implemented, which often doesn’t require box rest and hopefully will only result in the horse missing a few shows rather than a whole season. Vets are used to working with the thermal images and if something is revealed of greater concern Maddi will always indicate on the report that it is recommended to contact your vet. My own horse is homebred and now in her twenties so I know her very well. One of her hind legs has been weaker for a number of years and last year her other hind leg showed some puffiness. She has regular treatments and her physiotherapist explained that the stronger leg has been compensating for so many years that it was now beginning to show some wear and tear. What was interesting was the thermal imaging showed this very pattern. Taking into consideration her age and the work she has done over her lifetime Maddi reassured me that my horse was in pretty good shape. Her thermal images are quite colourful and there is plenty to monitor, but I am relieved to say that there has been nothing that has surprised me.

The Price List Back Scan . .............................................£30 Back & Saddle Scan ..............................£50 The images used in this feature are for editorial purposes only

Pair of legs ............................................£65 Full Body Scan......................................£150 ...................................until 30th April 2014 ........................................... thereafter £230

During a Saddle Scan the saddle is placed on the horse’s back without a cloth and girthed normally. It is removed approximately five minutes later taking care not to touch the underneath of the saddle. The saddle pictured shows a well fitting saddle as the pressure is even and symmetrical. The saddle should show red all over as the heat from the horse is contacting with it. If there are asymmetric areas of white, yellow or blue this will indicate the saddle doesn’t fit properly.

The future There are a number of different thermal imaging options available ranging from the back, a pair of legs to the full body. It is recommended if you can to have a full body scan to start with as you will always have this as a reference point in the future. The normal price for a full body scan is £230 but for the month of April Maddi has a special rate of £150 per scan. However, a day rate is £450 and Maddi can scan five horses in a day, which brings the rate down to £90 per horse. And if you do have a full body scan of your horse I am pretty sure you won’t be disappointed with the results. Even if the report just reassures you that your horse is in perfect working order, ready for the season ahead. The level of training and competition you do with your horse will probably influence how often you have your horse re-scanned. If a problem was indicated in a certain part of the body you may have this area re-scanned a few months later to check that any treatment or rehabilitation has worked. Maddi is an experienced horsewoman and rider. She has a young dressage horse and trained her retired horse up to Grand Prix, so is used to working with competition horses and appreciates the importance of keeping them fit for work as well as improving their way of going. These days an improvement which sees the horse gaining an extra percentage mark in the dressage arena, both in eventing and pure dressage, can make the winning difference. For competition horses the scans can be used purely as a management tool and will hopefully catch any areas of inflammation before they become a problem. To find out more call Maddi on Tel: 07403 415680 or email maddi.burchell@vtiuk.com www.veterinary-thermal-imaging.com

Do you suffer with four faultitis? If your horse has started knocking poles it is worth asking why? As well as hot spots the thermal imaging camera shows cold spots, which could indicate trapped nerves or muscles which are in spasm. Maddi had a client whose horse started rolling poles. When the horse’s legs were scanned one of them was blue from the knee down. It was determined that the horse had a trapped nerve and with a programme of physiotherapy the nerve was released and the horse is back to his old self again. It is assumed that when the nerve became trapped he lost some feeling in the leg and perhaps wasn’t aware that he was tapping the pole with that leg.

Half day rate........................................£350 (can do a mixture of scans up to three full body scans) Full day rate.........................................£450 (Up to five full scans, equating to £90 each) Travel costs one way will also be charged For more information more call Maddi on Tel: 07403 415680 or email maddi.burchell@vtiuk.com

It is important not to be alarmed by the difference in colours shown within a thermal image. The interpretation comes by comparing the same shot taken on both the left hand side and the right hand side of the body and comparing the differences within them. Just like humans, some horses are naturally warmer than others. april 2014 Localrider 49

Here Ed Lyall BVet Med CertEM (StudMed) MRCVS of the Arundel Equine Hospital explains what’s involved in the process of embryo transfer.

Scanning the mare

E

mbryo transfer (ET) is gaining popularity rapidly in the sport horse world now. People are becoming more aware of the process. Due to the increased numbers of mares undergoing embryo transfer the techniques are improving all the time and for the same reason the costs are reducing making it more accessible to mare owners. Primarily ET is a way of obtaining a foal from a mare (donor mare – whose genetic material you want to use) that can remain in competition. It can be used in some situations where the donor mare has a fertility problem associated with her uterus that prevents an embryo implanting and being carried to term. Embryo transfer is also a way of obtaining more than one foal from a mare each year; sometimes we can get three or four embryos all from the same mare by different stallions in a single year.

Looking for the embryo

The donor mare

The first step is to have the donor mare examined to make sure there are no problems evident that may affect the outcome of the ET process, this may include various swabs and tests as your vet feels are required. Once this is done the stallion should be chosen, it is essential that some research is done into his fertility as this will significantly affect the likelihood of obtaining an embryo. The donor mare can be covered naturally or be inseminated with either chilled or frozen semen, which can be imported from all over the world.

CARING FOR AND ABOUT HORSES

Transfer the embryo

Once an embryo has been produced this is transferred into a recipient mare. The recipient mares (often leased from the ET facility) are often between the age of three and ten, of good temperament, slightly larger in size than the donor mare and with no history of fertility problems themselves. Ideally the recipient mare should be about 24 hours behind the donor mare in her cycle, hence their cycles must be synchronised. This can be difficult to achieve, that is why we generally try to synchronise two or three recipients per donor mare to allow us to then pick the most appropriate recipient on the day of transfer. Often donor mare owners want to transfer embryos into another mare they own, this can be done but the likelihood of success is greatly increased with a larger number of recipients to choose from.

Synchronising the mares

The donor and recipient mares are synchronised by inducing them to come into season using prostaglandin injections, regumate can be used but this is expensive and not usually necessary. The donor mare will be monitored daily or every other day by scanning the uterus and ovaries to access when the best time to inseminate or cover is going to be. At the same time the recipient mares are examined to get the best match with the donor mare. Once a decision has been made as to when insemination is going to be performed ovulation induction agents such as ovuplant are given to the donor mare to guarantee she ovulates at the required time. The recipient mare that is closest to the donor mare in her cycle will be given the same injection approximately 24hours after the donor. Insemination will take place and the following day the donor mare will be examined to check she has ovulated and that there are no problems with her uterus after insemination. Once the date of ovulation has been identified the date of the embryo flush can be scheduled, this usually takes place seven or eight days after ovulation, depending on the time of year and whether or not frozen semen was used.

Distance Learning Courses from Lingfield Correspondence

Flushing the embryo

T

he professional BHS Stages theory knowledge is covered in the very comprehensive Intermediate Diploma programmes provided by Lingfield Correspondence. Plus the BHS Horse Owner’s Certificates will this summer provide accreditation towards one unit of BHS Stage 1. Being so comprehensive and with subsidised fees and instalment options, the Lingfield Correspondence courses can prove to be better value than many college courses. The flexible start and completion dates work really well for people with busy lives. You can work at your own speed and in your own time.

The 5 Freedoms of the Horse from Lingfield Correspondence It is said there are five freedoms we must be sure a horse always has: 1. Freedom to drink when it wishes and to eat to sustain good health. 2. Freedom to move around with ease in a comfortable environment, with shelter and with a place to rest quietly. Filtering the flush fluid

Flushing the embryo

Pregnancy scan at 14 days

The actual flushing procedure involves placing a catheter into the uterus and then washing the uterus with between two and 12 litres of sterile flushing medium. The fluid is then harvested through a very fine filter that collects any embryo present in the fluid that has been flushed through the uterus. The contents of the filter are poured into a Petri dish and the embryo is searched for under a microscope. Once the embryo has been found it is washed by passing it through several droplets of holding medium. The embryo is then loaded into a straw, similar to the straws that frozen semen comes in. The chosen recipient mare is prepared and the straw containing the embryo is emptied into the body of her uterus. This is a very brief summary of what happens, there is a lot of fine detail that must be paid attention to particularly the hygienic methods of working and accuracy of the techniques used, small details make a huge difference to the outcome of an ET program. Once the transfer has been done the recipient mare will be scanned in a weeks time to see if she has held the embryo, the pregnancy will be monitored to check all is well up to 42 days of age.

Start in spring if you can

The best time to start an ET program is in the spring when the mares are cycling well due to increased day length and also when they are on a rising plane of nutrition due to spring grass. Using artificial lighting to increase day length you could start as early as mid February. The success rate of any ET program is influenced by many factors, but now the chance of obtaining an embryo is very good. The costs that should be budgeted for include the cost of the stallion nomination, cost of inseminating the donor, cost of synchronising the recipient mares, cost of flush and transfer and cost of leasing the recipient mare until weaning. The prices are best obtained from your ET program provider. In our experience the chance of finding an embryo is approximately the same as if we were getting the mare in foal, so that depends on the mare and stallion fertility, but we would expect our in foal rate per cycle to be around 70%. The chance of the transferred embryo holding in the recipient mare is good, above 80%. With the protocol we used in our practice we achieved 100% take rate with the embryos we transferred in 2012.

3. Freedom to be a horse and to have sufficient space to act naturally with others of its kind, like normal horses. 4. Freedom from injury, disease and pain within the bounds and capacities of the humans who care for them. 5. Freedom from fear, stress, or any sort of mental suffering. Lingfield Correspondence offers distance learning courses which explain those freedoms in detail. The courses provide the knowledge and know how to ensure all these freedoms are properly met. The Lingfield Instructor Group produces the home study courses which cover all aspects of equine management. They cover other exciting specialist topics too such as equine psychology and human mind tools for achieving your best at competitions or how to help your horse have more confidence on the roads. he main goal when feeding any horse is to provide the correct amount of nutrients using sound feeding practices. Nutrient requirements of horses vary greatly depending on their maintenance needs and level of activity. For competition horses in hard work, their energy requirements will be high and they may require supplementation, in addition to forage and hard feed, to meet increased nutrient demands. Supplements can be added to the diet with the goal of improving performance, preventing a problem from occurring or to combat a problem after it arises. Many horse owners provide competition horses with electrolytes to replace depleted stores and also a joint supplement to prevent or address joint problems. all horses, just like humans, are susceptible to wear and tear, especially in their joints and soft tissues. Often, the level of work we ask of them is beyond the body’s natural healing ability. as prevention is always better than cure, the daily use of a scientifically proven supplement, such as litoVet®, as part of the management routine may be beneficial. Choosing a good quality joint supplement, supported by scientific research, is important so that you can be confident you are effectively supporting joint health, and not just simply adding ‘extras’ to your horse’s feed which have little or no benefit . Before adding a supplement, review the whole diet and if necessary consult a qualified equine nutritionist. There is a risk of over-supplementing horses, which is not only a waste of money but can also have an impact on health and performance (e.g. oversupplementing vitamins and minerals can be toxic to a horse in some cases). For competing horses, careful supplement and feed choices are crucial to ensure that prohibited substances are not present in the diet.

Supplementing Competition Horses

A Supplement Backed by Science... a clinical trial indicated that leading equine joint supplement litoVet® significantly helped to maintain soundness, suppleness and mobility in equine joints and joint tissues. The published independent double-blind placebo controlled trial, was undertaken on horses in active trotting training as they often develop early osteoarthritis as a result of their intensive programme. all horses were based at the same yard and put on a standardised training regime. Tests during and following the trial showed that the horses’ natural repair processes were more active in those being fed litoVet® than those on the placebo. Those on litoVet® also recorded significantly higher levels of vitamin C than the placebo group. Of the trainers, over 70% said horses appeared more lithe, supple and easier to work the day after strenuous exercise. litoVet® is different to any other joint supplement currently available in the UK, as nothing is added nor taken away during the manufacturing process - it is 100% natural. Made from specially cultivated rose-hip (rosa Canina) which has high levels of GOpO® (glycoside of mono and diglycerol), a unique active ingredient. litoVet® is suitable for all horses and ponies, including those which are competing. lesley peyton-Gilbert, a dressage rider, trainer and manager of a competition livery yard, has been using litoVet® on her international dressage horse, Woodcroft Garuda K, for the past 18 months and is very pleased with the results. Said lesley: “Garuda had been on more traditional joint health supplements and i had seen no real joint health improvement. However, litoVet® provides Garuda with the nutritional support to sustain good joint health and flexibility, and it works in a symbiotic way with his body and my feeding regime. i will continue to use this product to help Garuda cope with the demands of his competitive, as well as his breeding, career.”

The RRP for a 1.5kg tub of LitoVet® is £49.00 for approximately a two month supply at maintenance level. Available to buy online, please visit www.litovet.co.uk or telephone 01452 524 012.

Feeding for Topline & Condition

Feeding for topline or condition requires very different feeding practices and Blue Chip is here to shed some light on the topic.

To understand topline and condition, we must first differentiate between them; they are different concepts and are often confused. Topline refers to the horse’s muscle tone and definition extending from its head to tail, whereas condition refers to the body fat coverage over a horse’s body. More often than not an underweight horse will need to increase both topline and condition; however it is possible to have a horse in good condition with a poor topline or a horse with a strong muscular topline that is under condition. To help explain this further we can use a human example, athletic people will have a low body fat percentage (condition) and a high muscle mass percentage (topline) whereas an overweight person will conversely have a high body fat percentage (condition) and a low muscle mass percentage (topline).

BEFORE

The difference that proper nutrition with Blue Chip can make to topline and condition. This horse is shown and produced by Adam Winbourne.

Feeding for Topline The first thing you need to think of when you think topline is muscle, and what feeds muscles? Protein is responsible for the formation of all living cells including muscle, skin, hair, hooves and much of the horse’s skeleton. in order to build up your horse’s topline you need two things, exercise and nutrition. exercising for a minimum of 30 minutes a day encouraging your horse to work correctly by engaging their hindquarters and work over their back will help to develop your horse’s topline. as your horse’s topline begins to develop and strengthen you will see an improvement in their frame and their ability to engage their hindquarters. Nutrition is the second crucial component in developing a good topline; good quality protein is essential to repair and rebuild muscles following exercise. The concept of protein is sometimes a difficult to grasp, particularly when you are trying to differentiate between crude protein and amino acids. in short, crude protein refers to the overall protein content of a feed where amino acids are the building blocks of protein, and it is the ratio of these amino acids which determines the quality of the protein. lysine and methionine are considered the most limiting amino acids and if the correct level of these amino acids are not provided then all the other amino acids cannot be utilised by the horse. Soya protein is an ideal source of quality protein, supplying essential amino acids methionine and lysine in the correct ratio for optimal utilisation. Blue Chip feed balancers contain soya protein to help facilitate muscle growth, repair and topline.

Feeding for Condition Condition can be measured using a 5 point scale, measuring the fat deposits on a horse’s body from poor/emaciated (1) through to extremely fat/obese (5). in order to increase your horse’s condition, the horse needs to consume more calories than it burns off; however this does not simply mean you need to feed them more. increasing condition can also be achieved through switching to a higher calorie diet or by increasing the digestibility of their current ration. Fats provide 2.25 times more energy than carbohydrates and are an ideal way of increasing your horse’s calorie intake without the ‘fizz’. Oils are considered a ‘cool energy’ source as they are slow release and do not rapidly increase horses blood sugar levels like grains, high starch mixes and nuts can do. The inclusion of oil in your horse’s diet will allow you to increase your horse’s calorie intake without increasing the amount of feed they consume. Horses have small stomachs so even when feeding for weight gain, feeding should be kept as small as possible. Small nutrient dense, regular feeds are much more beneficial than large meals. High quality probiotics are also a fantastic way to help increase your horse’s condition. High quality probiotics can help improve fibre digestion by up to 100% allowing your horse to get twice as many calories out of the same amount of fibre. Blue Chip always recommends that owners do their research when it comes to selecting probiotics for their horse, when it comes to probiotics you get what you pay for, the most expensive feed balancers will contain the highest level most effective probiotic. Blue Chip Original and Blue Chip pro are formulated with the highest quality probiotic at their correct levels to help improve fibre digestion to help increase your horse’s condition without needing to increase their feed intake. it is important to assess your horse’s needs before jumping into a new diet plan. ensuring you know your horse’s weight and body condition score is the first step in determining if your horse needs topline, condition or both. Consulting a nutritionist is the best way to ensure you are feeding the right ingredients to achieve the correct condition for your horse. Blue Chip’s Nutritional Specialist Sarah Butler is available to answer any of your queries and can advise you on optimal feeding practices to get your horse to their best condition and health.

Baileys Outshine if your horse needs a “serious calorie hit” without it going to his head, Baileys Outshine high oil supplement is the answer. Being energy-dense, oil delivers lots of calories in a much smaller volume than cereals, and in a slow release form, so there’s no danger of the fizz which may come from starch. added to an existing balanced diet, Outshine is fed in small quantities, with ½ to 1lb supporting soft supple skin and a shiny coat and 1 to 3lb, providing significant additional calories for weight gain or performance. it’s also ideal for horses whose starch intake needs limiting, like those prone to laminitis or tying-up, and, alongside its balance of Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids, there are antioxidants to support the body’s utilisation of the oil. Baileys Top Line Conditioning Cubes Working and performance horses need good quality protein to provide the amino acid building blocks for muscle and top line. Choosing a feed formulated for the appropriate workload by a reputable manufacturer, and feeding it at the recommended levels, should provide all a horse needs to gain and maintain the condition and top line to match his performance. Importantly, this approach also helps ensure that the overall diet is fully balanced and is much more cost effective than turning to a “magic” muscle supplement. Baileys Top Line Conditioning Cubes do exactly what it says on the bag and supply highly digestible non-heating calories along with top quality protein and performance levels of vitamins and minerals. At the other end of the energy spectrum, Baileys Performance Balancer provides essential nutrients without the calories associated with a mix or cube so is perfect for ensuring that even a good-doer can get muscle-building nutrition without adding to his waistline. Alltech Lifeforce Elite Competition horses can sometimes lead stressful lives, the constant travelling to shows, over-night stays in unfamiliar surroundings, constant training and a high cereal diet can all have a negative impact on the horse’s delicate digestive system. To be able to remain in peak condition in order to maintain fitness, strength and athletic ability, competition horses need to be fed the correct balance of high quality nutrients. Lifeforce Elite from Alltech, provides essential trace minerals that contribute to better exercise performance and helps speed recovery from strenuous work. It also increases the amount of energy released from the horse’s total diet and maximises antioxidant status through organic selenium. The constant travelling exposes our competition horses to invading pathogens, often compromising the immune system, leading to the increased risk of disease. Lifeforce Elite can help to bolster the immunity of competition horses by protecting immunity and increasing resistance to stress, leading to improved performance. It also helps to restore the population of good bacteria where an influx of undigested cereal based feeds has altered hindgut acidity. Tel: 01780 764512, www.lifeforcehorse.co.uk

Equine America Formula 1 Plus Cortaflex When competing at top level, it can be necessary to have variety of supplements to aid performance. Blue Chip Joint RLF You can protect your horse’s joints by using a high quality joint supplement such as Blue Chip Joint RLF. This will help to ensure your horse’s joints are nourished and protected. Joint problems can often occur from excessive activity on hard ground; this can lead to the production of poor quality synovial (joint) fluid. The joint relies on this fluid for lubrication and protection from wear and tear ensuring the longevity of the limb. Blue Chip Joint RLF can help maintain the viscosity of synovial fluid. This revolutionary product not only contains Glucosamine, MSM, Hyaluronic acid, Yucca and Manganese, which all help to nourish the joint, but also contains a rosehip extract, Rosa canina (more commonly known as the Dog rose). Rosa canina contains a special glycoside that helps maintain joint comfort by limiting the number of white blood cells allowed into the joint. Tel: 0114 266 6200, www.bluechipfeed.com

Blue Chip Karma The 100% natural ingredients in Blue Chip Karma include the superior, water-soluble form of magnesium which can be quickly absorbed into the blood stream. When stressed, horses can use up their available stores of Magnesium and so will potentially benefit from a readily available water-soluble source. Karma also contains other beneficial vitamins and minerals, including vitamin C, which is vital to horses under stress from exercise, training and new environments. l-tryptophan is included as it is a pre-cursor for the hormone serotonin, the ‘feel-good’ hormone. Karma does not contain any banned or prohibited substances and is completely safe to use daily or as a single dose as required. Tel: 0114 266 6200, www.bluechipfeed.com

Supplement Requirements of the Competition Horse Words supplied by NAF If you and your horse are hoping to get out competing this summer then there’s a lot to think about: what’s his best discipline, do you need lessons, is your transport up to scratch? But one area that mustn’t be forgotten is his diet. Nutritional support is a big part of peak athletic performance.

Feeding for success When looking at his general diet remember one of the golden rules of feeding “feed to work done”. don’t be tempted to feed more than he needs, or up to a ‘Sports Mix’ just because you want to compete. Overfeeding has the potential to cause far more problems than it solves. Many horses will do very well on a basic fibre based diet, but if you are feeding less than recommended amounts of concentrates then you will need to top up his vitamins and minerals. a concentrated feed balancer which includes gut support alongside the micronutrients is particularly recommended for competing animals who are exposed to physical stress, such as travelling regularly. a broad spectrum approach to gut support is best, as so many different factors can affect the working horse’s digestive system. look for a product contains pre and probiotic yeasts, and ideally antacid elements and herbal gut support alongside.

Sweat losses One of the essential factors for competing horses is replacing the lost body salts. Sodium chloride, that is, normal salt, is the most important and should be supplemented daily year round. as salt is the only nutrient that research has shown horses will sufficiently self-select then this is easily done by simply hanging a salt lick in the field and stable. Try to avoid the artificially flavoured varieties, as these can be devoured like sweets. For those working harder and travelling regularly you should upgrade basic salt to electrolytes, which provide all four body salts, i.e. sodium, calcium, potassium and magnesium. electrolytes can be fed as a powder which is added to drinking water or a nice, wet feed; or are now available in, effectively, a sports drink for horses where the salts are diluted in solution and ready to feed whenever they are most needed. it’s worth checking that levels of salts provided are declared on the packaging and that a good level is included, as levels vary enormously between products on the market. it is imperative that electrolytes are fed with sufficient water, as feeding a concentrated electrolyte alone (i.e. in a paste or dry feed) may actually further dehydrate the horse. Failure to replace these body salts can affect the thirst mechanism, thus leaving the horse prone to dehydration. There may also be a loss of appetite. Ultimately repetitive, excessive sweating can lead to de-mineralisation depriving muscle, bone and cartilage of the nutrients essential to post-exercise repair. Of course clean, fresh water should also always be available. electrolytes are not the only nutrients lost in sweat. iron, an essential trace element, is lost at a rate of around 25mg per litre of sweat. performance increases both the requirement for iron, by up to 40%, and at the same time the amount lost through sweat, thus it may be beneficial to supplement your competition horse if he shows signs of iron deficiency. anaemia is the most obvious sign of iron deficiency, which shows itself in the horse as lack of stamina, laboured breathing and poor performance. anaemia is also a factor in post exercise recovery, and therefore becomes significant when working or competing over several days. if using an iron supplement for stamina in your competing horse ensure it also contains the B group vitamins, particularly folic acid and vitamin B12, as these are necessary for haemoglobin production in the blood which transports oxygen to the muscles and, hence, also vital to stamina and performance.

Staying Sound although we all try our best to keep our horses fit and sound all year round, risks can be increased by extra work and hard summer ground, but nutritional support can help swing the luck your way. remember joint products are not just for the old and stiff horses. providing your horse with the correct nutritional support now, not only provides insurance support for the season, but can also be the start of keeping your horse sound for many more years to come. However, a quick look in any horsey outlet will tell you that choosing the right product can be mind boggling given the number of products available. ask yourself a number of questions:Does it include the ingredients you believe it does? Check the ingredients list on the back of the label, and make sure inclusion rates of key ingredients are also listed. Does it contain proven ingredients? Glucosamine, Chondroitin sulphate and Hyaluronic acid are well researched nutrients for support of the cartilage and synovial fluid within the joint. While the Glucosamine is certainly the most important, and the one your vet is likely to recommend, research suggests that the others play a supporting role and a combination is the right approach. MSM is a natural form of sulphur to support the soft tissue around the joint. recent research has positively linked MSM to glucosamine again suggesting that feeding the two together is recommended over either one alone. ideally look for a product containing these nutrients with clinically proven antioxidants for flushing toxins from the system. Does it support the mechanics and longevity of the joint structure? avoid those products offering pain relief alone, as without support for the joint capsule you are not prolonging the life of the joint, in fact masking pain may speed up degradation. Do you know and trust the company? Would you really trust your horse’s future health to a company you don’t know? research in america found that over 40% of joint products analysed contained less glucosamine than declared on the label, some up to 30% less. Choose a manufacturer you trust and discuss your horse’s requirements with them if necessary. any reputable company should be happy to discuss your horse and choose the right product for both of you. Is it safe under rules? Check the label. any product carrying the industry recognized BeTa UFaS NOpS logo has reached the highest standard to ensure the risk of accidental contamination by Naturally Occurring prohibited Substances (NOpS), such as caffeine, is minimal. So a little fine tuning of your horse’s diet with the right supplementary support will ensure that together you can reach your true potential. Good luck to all those competing in 2014! Other Feed & Bedding News… The Best Friend Grazing Muzzle The Best Friend Grazing Muzzle from Charlies Products is a must this spring/summer for managing a restricted diet, whilst allowing your horse the freedom to socialize, exercise and de-stress out in the field. Horses adapt well to the Best Friend Grazing Muzzle and when fitted correctly, effectively restrict grass intake without restricting natural grazing and drinking patterns. The Best Friend Grazing Muzzle is designed with your horses comfort in mind. For horses with pronounced features there is also the Muzzle Mate or Sheep Skin Padding for additional comfort. The Best Friend Grazing Muzzle attaches to any field safe head collar, or the Deluxe version comes in an all-in-one design with a safety head piece attached. Available in the following sizes: Large horse, Horse, Cob, Pony, Mini and Mini Mini. For more information Telephone: 0844 809 4655 or visit www.charliesproducts.co.uk

Verdo Horse Bedding In the battle against stable stains you need every little bit of help you can get and when it comes to your choice of bedding, the more absorbent the bedding, the less mess your horse has to lay in. Verdo Horse Bedding is a clever heat-treated wood pellet product, created for equine use, which absorbs three times its own weight in liquid, which not only helps maintain a dry environment, but also reduces ammonia resulting in a much more pleasant night’s sleep. When a small amount of water is added to the bag a regeneration process is activated and within approximately 15 minutes, you are ready to empty the open bags out into the stable to create a soft fluffy and dry bed ready for your horse. Because the pellets are manufactured from 100% virgin soft wood and heat treated to eliminate pests and bacteria, you can rest assured that your horse is sleeping on only the best and it’s good to know that it has a low dust content, also making it the ideal choice for enclosed environments, such as your trailer or lorry or for immediate occupation at shows this season. Other key factors include less waste on the muck heap and beds that are easier and quicker to muck out, leaving you more time for plaiting on those show mornings. www.verdohorsebedding.co.uk

The Hay Bar Solution Short winter days make every minute saved important. The use of Hay Bar ensures precious time is saved. Filling hay nets is time consuming and is not always the best way to feed a particular horse. Feeding from the floor helps to ensure that there are less respiratory, dental and physio problems. All of which can prove to be costly. Using a Hay Bar helps to prevent the hay from becoming mixed with the bedding and thereby saving on any wastage. Hay Bar truly sells itself as the initial outlay is quickly recouped in reduced forage bills and saved time. www.haybar.co.uk 72 Localrider april 2014

Staying Calm at a competition The Probiotic Balance Probiotics can play an important role in the diet of any competition horse, here we find out why… Top International Event Rider, Piggy French talks Protexin Top event rider Piggy French talks about her experience with Protexin with Jonathan Nelson, Protexin Equine Premium Director. Jonathan Nelson, Protexin Equine Premium Director: I was first aware of Piggy’s interest in Protexin following her return from Kentucky in 2010 when she had been advised to try Jakata (Jaffa) on Protexin. Q - What are probiotics? A - Probiotics are supplements added to the diet which contain live organisms and their products that are beneficial for intestinal microbial health. How can probiotics help a competition horse? Jonathan Nelson, Director at Protexin Equine said: “Think of the horse as a flight animal, their only defence in the wild where they evolved is to run away. To run fast they empty themselves which sheds the extra weight; this is obvious to many owners and trainers when they drop the ramp on the lorry, or appear with a bridle. It is the horse’s natural response to a ‘predator’. We might not see going to a show as a threat but that’s the way, in practice, the horse sees it. It’s a trait utilised by the racing world when asking horses for a burst of speed and that flight response triggers many endogenous reactions within the horse, one of those being a rapid evacuation of their hind gut. The consequence of that, and with the regularity associated with competition and race horses, the more depleted the population of beneficial microflora in the horse’s hindgut: their engine. Take the competition or racehorse, they would be experiencing this action and effect on a daily basis with the consequential loss of gut bacteria resulting in the decreased utilisation of feed, increased excitability, the development of a compromised immune system all of which leads to a general depression in their athletic abilities. Probiotic products can be incorporated into their hard feeds at time of manufacture but the levels needed to be effective are easily depleted through the manufacturing process, oxidation within the feed and the presence of moisture within the finished product. That’s why the daily addition of a highly concentrated probiotic such as Equine Premium Gut Balancer will benefit virtually every horse that is in any kind of work that involves competition and travel. The product should have no nutrition or energy value so it can be combined with any diet. There is no risk of overdose either. In my opinion the market for our product is developing and will emulate the ‘joint products’ market over the next few years growing to a similar size. The difference is that these probiotic products are licensed feed additives within the EU now and achieve ‘exactly what it says on the tin’ so to speak.” The Protexin Equine Premium Range comprises of five products; Gut Balancer, Acid Ease, Quick Fix, Recover Aid and Gut Bind. For more information please contact Protexin on 01460 243230 or visit www.equinepremium.com

Piggy French, International Event Rider: We tried the Protexin Gut Balancer on ten of the horses and compared the results to the rest of the yard and I can honestly say those ten have really benefitted from Gut Balancer by comparison in both holding their condition and they are more settled during a stressful competition schedule; so much so we’ve put the rest on it. Jakata had always been a stressy horse who anticipated and became anxious when he realised he was off to a party. He had not flown before so to ensure his gut remained stable and he kept eating, we started by using the Quick Fix product prior to, during and on the way back home. I can honestly say we saw the benefit, and he seemed much more settled than I would have expected. Jonathan Nelson: I think it was at that point that Piggy’s Head Groom contacted me and asked if Piggy could try a few horses on our feed supplement version, Gut Balancer, for a couple of months and see how they fared against the rest of the yard. Piggy French: That’s right, we kept Jakata on Gut Balancer and introduced it to some of my other horses. There was a significant improvement in the way that the horses were less stressed and maintained their weight, even during a hectic competition schedule which involves lots of travelling. Jonathan Nelson: And what about Jakata? Piggy French: I’m delighted to say that Jaffa keeps improving! He always had a tendency to run up light but now he keeps his weight and maintains a really good top line. Since we’ve used Protexin I can honestly say that Jakata has a much better appetite all of the time. Let’s face it, if you can keep your horse eating you can keep up the work and training. Jakata was the best British horse in 2012 and second at Badminton in 2011. Jonathan Nelson: I don’t think Protexin in any form is an excuse for poor feeding or management, or an elixir for life as many of these products can be portrayed, but it does make a difference and is different to the regular stuff you’ll find on the shelf. The regular positive feedback that I receive from the professional world underwrites that view, and if it can make the difference between an appetite and no appetite then that’s enough to win. Having said that, there’s no reason why any horse won’t benefit, you don’t have to be heading for Badminton. april 2014 Localrider 73
