Welcome 30 T

his issue marks the start of the outdoor season. With relatively dry conditions, the eventers have been relishing being able to go cross country and whilst our event reports will start next issue, we have lots of Arena Eventing featured this month. Action from Littleton Manor can be found on page 30, from Coombelands on page 34 and from Hickstead on page 64. Whatever you do with your horse, remember to check both your own and your horse’s equipment regularly. Safety clothing and riding hats have improved enormously over the last five to ten years, thanks to research and development and we hope our feature on page 36 will give you some useful tips. For example did you know that body protectors should be replaced every three to five years, irrespective of whether you have a fall, as the impact absorption properties of the foam may have started to decline. We have been overwhelmed by the response to our request for you to share pictures of your favourite yard dogs. There are so many wonderful characters with amazing stories. Turn to page 48 to see if you recognise any of these cheeky canines. There are some amazing competition in this issue, including a year’s training with this month’s cover star, Daniel Watson (see page 11), a fantastic photo shoot with Emma Hughes (see page 52), plus lots of other prizes and giveaways throughout the magazine. Have you heard, there is a new event, Total Confidence Live, being held at the South of England Showground, Ardingly over the weekend of 25th & 26th April. It promises to offer a unique mix of training, education and shopping. The Localrider team will be there, with our normal mix of competitions and giveaways on our stand, so do come and say hello. And in the meantime remember to keep me updated with all your equestrian news.

Freedom Feeder Mini Net The Freedom Feeder Mini Net is styled in a soft, but highly durable nylon weave rope, which because of its flexibility makes it slightly more difficult for the horse to grab it with his teeth and rip holes to an attempt to gain greater access to the hay. The net features small holes and can be hung via a special clip, so no more fiddly tying up. These clips are designed to break in the event of an accident and the net also comes with a free repair kit, to lengthen the life of the net. Its shape and design make the net incredibly easy to fill and hang and is ideal for travelling, for shows and for slowing down fast eaters. The Freedom Feeder Mini Net is brand new to the UK and available exclusively through premium retailers Shadow Horse. www.shadowhorse.co.uk

Dengie & Aivly Team Up to Combat Laminitis As all horse and pony owners know with the approach of spring comes the concern of Laminitis. Control of Horses Bill will become law The country’s largest welfare charities, countryside and farming organisations welcomed the passing of the Control of Horses Bill which will become law before the General Election. The new law will deter and help to swiftly resolve cases of ‘flygrazing’ – the practice of placing horses on private and public land without permission. It will bring England into line with Wales, which introduced a similar law in early 2014 and may have led to the practice growing in England where charities estimate the number of horses fly-grazed to be more than 3,000, causing misery for horses, communities and taxpayers. World Horse Welfare Chief Executive Roly Owers said: “After almost three years of campaigning, all of the organisations in our coalition are delighted that Julian Sturdy MP’s Private Members Bill has successfully been passed and will become law before the election. This law will make a big difference to horse welfare, as charities have been struggling to help the thousands of horses being bred indiscriminately and kept without proper care. It will also help landowners, farmers, communities and taxpayers as it will make action to remove horses much more swift, straightforward and less expensive to take. The success of the Welsh legislation demonstrates that these laws will work if they are used – so do use them. We are all immensely grateful to Julian who fought so hard to get this Bill on the table, and successfully secured cross-party backing through Parliament.” www.worldhorsewelfare.org/flygrazing

Beth Mantel receives sponsorship call Two riders had the surprise of their lives recently when they were contacted out of the blue and offered sponsorship by the renowned 124-year-old Harry Hall equestrian clothing brand. Hannah Bishop, a racing manager from Fulmer, Bucks, and Beth Mantel, a keen show jumper and dressage rider, and instructor at Berkshire College of Agriculture at Burchetts Green, were both among the handful of horse enthusiasts handpicked by Harry Hall. Both will share Harry Hall news with their followers, write blogs, and will be feeding back into the Harry Hall product development team about how their clothes are performing. “Harry Hall makes clothes for real riders who want to be safe and stylish as they enjoy their riding day in and day out,” says Harry Hall’s Lucy Higginson. “Our aim was to find riders who reflect the brand; who are wellregarded in their region, who communicate with a good number of riders on Facebook and Twitter, and with strong interests in different areas of the horse world.” Hannah is racing manager for Liz Prowting racing, a big supporter of retrained racehorses, and has two horse-mad sons. A year ago she won a charity horse race in aid of Greatwood Thoroughbred rehoming centre. Beth competes successfully in dressage and show jumping and teaches at Berkshire College of Agriculture. Beth said: “It was a lovely surprise to be chosen by Harry Hall to represent their brand. It is a name Beth every rider knows and as someone Mantel who pretty much lives in riding clothes I look forward to sharing news about the brand and putting Harry Hall clothes properly through their paces.” To find out how Beth and Hannah get on this year as Harry Hall Ambassadors, follow Harry Hall’s facebook page, or find out more via www.harryhall.com Last month we described the cover picture as Francis Whittington and Easy Target at Blenheim Horse Trials. The picture was taken at the Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials in 2013. Francis and Easy Target are the reigning British National Champions and did win Blenheim in 2014. KM Elite Products Orchard Treats These new apple and pear flavoured treats come in 1.5kg bags, and are great for a reward for your horse. They are palatable, smell delicious and are also a good source of Omegas 3, 6 and 9. www.kmeliteproducts.co.uk LR Comment: The horses at the yard were literally mugging me for these treats and that was before they tasted them. Once they had I thought they were going to climb out of their stables to steal more. They obviously got the big thumbs up from the horses. Plus I found them a good size to keep in my pocket as a handy treat.

Make an angel of your moody mare

Oestress is a special unique formulation designed to help the mare help herself. It supports hormone balance and encourages regularity of the oestress cycle naturally. So help your moody mare help herself - feed her Oestress for the performance of an angel.

Spring fever FEATURE

Lucy Nicholas of online retailer The Saddlery Shop offers advice on restricting grazing with a muzzle this spring, for horses prone to weight gain or laminitis...

A grazing muzzle can be a useful – a padded one, like this one from hey are something of a necessary Shires, helps prevent rubbing. evil for some owners, but a grazing muzzle can be a useful tool. By using a muzzle, your horse can still be moving around the field and socialising, but will be getting limited spring grass that has high levels of non-structural carbohydrates (NSC). I am a fan of the Greenguard grazing muzzle; it has been The Laminitis designed with vets for effective grazing control, yet still allows phone app alerts unrestricted breathing and drinking, and for the horse to get horse owners sufficient exercise in a larger field than grass intake would when their horse normally allow. It also helps prevent the sweating or rubbing that’s is at a higher sometimes associated with ‘bucket’ style grazing muzzles. risk of laminitis. Introduce the muzzle gradually by starting off using it in the stable - reward your horse with a treat through the hole in the muzzle when you put it on and take it off. Once outside, feed grass through the hole to help him understand the principle. Leave the muzzle on for short periods, gradually building up the time it is on.

T

Grazing considerations

1. According to natural hoofcare barefoot trimmer Steven Leigh of natureswaynhc.co.uk, overweight horses are at a much greater risk of laminitis. Steven helped produce the ‘Laminitis app,’ a grazing risk monitoring service that alerts horse owners when their horse is at a higher risk of laminitis due to a potential increase in grass sugars. Look for the app ‘Laminitis’ on your smart phone or visit laminitis-risk.com - the app will help you to assess when you need to use the muzzle to help prevent excess intake of NSC.

NSCs and WSCs Non-Structural Carbohydrates (NSC) include the simple sugars and starches that can be broken down by enzymes and absorbed from the small intestine into the blood stream as glucose. Water Soluble Carbohydrates (WSC) are primarily the sugars such as fructans found in forages.

2. Please don’t be tempted to shut a horse away, e.g stable him excessively, to avoid the spring grass - in my opinion the social aspect of turn out with other equines is key. Plus of course, the movement is essential to general wellbeing and mobility - many people use sand schools or bare paddocks for this purpose. 3. Don’t forget that if you have a laminitis prone horse, soaking or steaming the hay can reduce the nutritional content and make it safer. Current research indicates that overconsumption of hays and pasture grasses that contain high levels of fructans and fructose can lead to bouts of laminitis. We know that grass sugars decline significantly when hay is soaked; however, soaking causes considerable mineral losses and reduces the amount of dry matter. A brand new study recently looked at ‘wetting’ methods that included steaming, soaking, steaming then soaking, and soaking then steaming. The study found that soaking followed by steaming was the most effective method for reducing both water soluble carbohydrates (WSC) and microbial content in hay intended for horses. (Ref: The Effect of Five Different Wetting Treatments on the Nutrient Content and Microbial Concentration in Hay for Horses, Scott Moore-Colyer et al, 26/11/14, Plos One.)

FEATURE What tack do I use? A flash noseband is the most commonly seen noseband in eventing and is permitted in all disciplines. Grackle and dropped nosebands are allowed, but only when combined with a snaffle bit. The traditional cavesson noseband is a must-have on any double bridle. Double bridles are only seen during the dressage phase at Intermediate Novice level and above, but can be used at lower levels during both the show jumping and cross country phases. The first step towards eventing is making sure you and your horse are fit and ready to compete

Let’s go eventing... Words by Stephen Biddlecombe

Are you ready to give eventing a go? The first step is making sure you and your horse are sufficiently fit, healthy and under a targeted schooling and training regime, but what about the smaller things that you need to get organised for an event, now the season has started? Here are our top tips:

1

You will have seen that helmet standards have been in the news recently. Your protective headwear must be of the standard PAS 015 or BSEN 1384 (British Eventing will permit hats made solely to the ‘old’ BSEN 1384 standard in 2015, but not thereafter), all hats will be re-tagged in 2016. Your hat is tagged at the secretary’s tent at affiliated events, and the current hat tag colour is green.

Martingales are used to help the rider control the head carriage of the horse. A running martingale, which allows more freedom and movement than other martingales, is permitted and is often seen during the show jumping and cross country phases. Standing martingales and Market Harboroughs are forbidden in all phases. Breastplates are used in order to keep the saddle in place and also provide a useful “grab strap”, should the rider be unseated or left behind over a fence. Breastplates often have a martingale attachment but this can only be attached during the jumping phases. Stud girths are generally used during the jumping phases, protecting the abdomen of the horse from injury when they are wearing studs. Worldwide Tack offers a wide range of equipment including a collection of leatherwork such as martingales, breastplates and stud girths. Visit the website at: www.worldwidetack.com Top right: Running martingales with standing attachments, like this one from World Wide Tack, are versatile pieces of kit; for eventing however, the standing attachment would need to be removed. Above right: Stud girths protect the abdomen of the horse from injury when they are wearing studs. This article uses information sourced from British Eventing’s ‘Pre Season Checklist’, available publically at britisheventing.com. Please visit http://www.localrider.co.uk/diary to see details of events in Kent, Sussex, Surrey, Hampshire, Berkshire and the Isle of Wight.

2 3

Remember that you may not wear hats with fixed peaks for the cross-country phase of eventing; only jockey skulls without peaks (e.g. with removable covers) are permitted in crosscountry phases. Helmets with fixed peaks can still be worn for the show jumping and dressage phases. If you have a medical condition that may impact on your care in the case of an emergency, then you’re advised to wear a medical armband. Conditions that are relevant include recent head injury, serious past injuries or surgery, chronic health problems such as diabetes, as well as long-term medications and allergies. It is not necessary for competitors without any medical conditions to wear a medical armband.

4

In terms of body protectors, for the cross-country phase, you must have a BETA approved and appropriately labelled level 3 body protector, with the year 2000 or 2009 showing. You are advised to visit a BETA-trained retailer to be fitted for a body protector. Air jackets are commonly worn as an addition to a body protector; if you’re unclear on the differences, a body protector offers Only jockey skulls without permanent, static protection, while an peaks are permitted, crossair vest provides temporary, dynamic country. You must have a protection once the garment is inflated. level 3 body protector Air jackets are permitted for use in both the dressage and show jumping phases within the discipline of eventing, with or without a body protector underneath.

5

Regarding vaccinations, your horse’s vaccinations must be up to date in advance of the event; no horse may compete in affiliated BE events unless it has a current vaccination against equine influenza. You must bring the passport and vaccination to every BE event; this document is required whenever you transport a horse. APRIL 2015 Localrider 23

oltaire Design saddles are a revelation that many in the equestrian community are only just learning of, but that’s about to change. From humble beginnings in the heart of French saddle making country, hard work, determination and a desire to push the boundaries of innovation and design, whilst staying true to traditional French saddle making practises have epitomised Voltaire Design and enabled the development of a range of saddles that live up to Voltaire’s aspirations to build saddles that are ‘simply sports chic’.

Individual attention to aid performance

The combination of innovation and traditional saddle expertise is ingrained in the company’s founders and has become synonymous with Voltaire Design and their mission statement “to help everyone fulfil their full potential.” Voltaire Design’s goal is to not only sell high-end products to their customers, but to work with each rider to craft for them a product that will help improve their riding. These aspirations have helped Voltaire Design become a market leader in the United States and now the brand is helping the British equine community discover Voltaire Design saddles. With leading UK based riders including Oliver Townend, Louise Harwood, Nicky Roncoroni and Constantin van Rijckevorsel (BEL) already riding in their saddles, Voltaire Design have the foundations in place to achieve this.

Voltaire Design started in the UK a few years ago and began an assured and sustainable growth from initial roots in the South East of England where they partner with Littleton Manor Equestrian. It was fitting then that Voltaire chose to unveil Sabine Colnot, the latest member of the UK Team at an informal reception at Littleton Manor Equestrian on Thursday 5th March, where nearly a hundred current and prospective Voltaire Design riders attended the launch night. Sabine joins as Voltaire Design’s UK Sports Saddle Specialist and is available for saddle fittings and consultations. Sabine has spent her life with, on and around horses and is excited to be part of the Voltaire Design team. Based at Littleton Manor Equestrian, just off the M25 Sabine is perfectly positioned to travel to meet riders not just in the South East, but also across the UK and to attend many British Eventing and International Horse Trials over the course of 2015. Laura jumping her homebred mare, Nessa

Laura Powell writes...

I am now feeling very left behind! The season has started and I still haven’t been cross-country schooling. It didn’t help that my two best friends took me off on yet another ski trip - luckily it was just a long weekend to Andorra. Nessa is coming on leaps and bounds and now I think she will make it to an event in the near future. In just a few shows Nessa successfully jumped round British Novice courses and even jumped a Discovery class at Blue Barn, where nothing phased her - if anything she concentrates on the job more away from home. She also performed well at Felbridge coming fifth in the BE Combined Training. I only entered the 80cm as she had never been there before and that arena can be daunting even for an experienced horse, but she showed her boldness and jumped a lovely clear round. Also on the lorry was Flint - my chestnut ride from last year, who I’ve managed hide when potential buyers come! He skipped round the 90cm - finding it all very easy for another fifth. Then came Alfred. He ran in the BE100 and is was so lovely to be riding him in the ring again. He performed really well and was only just outside the placings in a very competitive section. Up until now I daren’t even think about making a plan for Alf and yet now I’ve got to. We’ve been training over skinnies at home and it’s all still there, like he’s never had any time off. The ground is going to be a big factor in where I run him and the plan will be to do a couple of BE100’s then go from there. He’s got his stud holes in, so is ready to roll. Flint needs to do a BE90 sharpish, just to remind him what it is all about and then move up to BE100 – again, if he’s not sold. Then Nessa will hopefully do an unaffiliated BE80 then proceed to a few BE90s. The aim with her will be quality not quantity, as she

has still got a lot of growing to do and will need a mini holiday for a few weeks in the summer. Hopefully we will run Megan (the new ride) alongside Nessa, although Megan is a few years older so there will be no need for her to have a summer vacation. We went to visit Spud in his new home with the Brise’s, where he is a star hunt horse. He is either hired out, ridden by Harriet or the Master and I’ve just heard that Harriet’s young brother Jack appears to have nicked the ride on him, jumping everything in sight and is taking him to an away meet next weekend, as the season comes to a close. We miss him a lot on the yard, but are so happy that he’s ended up in the career he was always destined for.

Coping with Sweet Itch

Owners of horses or ponies with sweet itch often dread the start of spring as the cycle of itching and scratching begins.

A

loeride the pure organic aloe vera supplement has not only been found to help alleviate the horse’s negative reaction to midge bites, but also it has a positive effect on the skin’s condition and helps to accelerate the healing process. Han Van Braak, MD of Aloeride explains, there are some practical steps you can take in making life more comfortable for your horse this spring…

Pic courtesy of World Horse Welfare

➤ Be prepared before the warmer weather arrives. It is often hard to predict, when our seasons are so mixed up and whilst I would suggest feeding Aloeride at least one month before the sweet itch season kicks in, it is difficult to predict this. ➤ Whilst many of our customers report back that by using Aloeride they no longer require rug protection, I always recommend that you should hang onto your rug, as I believe a double pronged approach to tackling the condition is always more beneficial, be it a rug or fly/midge spray used in conjunction with Aloeride. ➤ Turning your horse out during the middle of the day, rather than at night or early morning when the midges are more likely to be out in full force can help, especially in fields that are marshy or near rivers or lakes (which midges love). Midges do not fly in strong wind, heavy rain or bright, clear sunshine, so under these weather conditions your horse shouldn’t be under such strong attack.

Horses which suffer from sweet itch can quickly end up with sore tails like this, once the midges start biting. ➤ Keeping your horse stabled at “high risk” times will limit the number of midges they come in contact with. Plus putting fly strips with citronella in the stable (making sure that they cannot be reached) is another option. Follow these tips and hopefully you and your horse can enjoy an itch-free, happy and healthy season! For more information visit www.aloeride.co.uk

f you compete at riding Club team events or British Eventing competitions your riding hat will have been subject to an inspection and tagged to say that it is the right type of hat for the level of competition. The tagging is purely based on the labels inside the hat, not taking into account any wear and tear, which may have occurred due to falls or even the hat being dropped on a hard surface.

need to purchase a new hat. it is recommended that riding hats are replaced every two to three years. if you have a hat which conforms to EN1384 and you do not compete in any disciplines which require your hat to be replaced in 2016, then it is not necessary to purchase a new hat immediately, just doing so when you would normally replace your hat or following a fall, if this happens sooner.

How old is your hat? is it time you bought yourself a new hat? if you only ride lightly a few times a week, the chances are your hat could still look almost new. However, remember that polystyrene layer, it may deteriorate with age. The recent research into rider safety, particularly hats, body protectors and air jackets has been remarkable and it has brought about amazing improvements in the products which are now available. yet many still delay the purchase. Keeping horses is expensive, yet for the price of a dozen bales of shavings, it is possible to purchase a new riding hat or skull cap. i can’t emphasis enough how easily it seems we spend money on our horses, but not on what is most important your own safety.

Changes to hat standards

There have been recent changes made to the EN1384 standard in respect of CE marking. CE marking is the manufacturer’s declaration that the product meets the requirements of the applicable EC directive. This has led to the standard losing its “presumption of conformity” to the personal protective Equipment (ppE) directive. This means that hats can no longer be CE marked to the EN1384 standard. as a result some of the UK riding bodies have advised that the 1384 standard will not be acceptable beyond 2015. However, many organisations are still discussing the changes and it is possible that to compete in some competitions from 2016 onwards you may

if we think hats have a hard life, then spare a moment for the poor old body protector. Most normally found in the back of a lorry, where it is left in between events. Knowing horse riders the chances are it will be left in a heap on the floor, while they tend to their horse, to be walked over, sat on, or perhaps be a convenient resting place for a travelling dog. in a similar way to hats, the body protector is made from a layer of foam, which spreads the energy of any impact incurred during a fall and as with hats, the foam needs to be kept in as good condition as possible. Treasure your body protector, hang it up, take care of it and remember as with hats, even if you don’t have a fall, it will deteriorate with age.

Useful information The British Equestrian Trade association website has lots of useful information relating to safety equipment and in respect of body protectors says: Whether you’re planning to go eventing, about to back a young horse or just go out hacking, consideration should always be given to body protection. Designed to absorb impact from a fall or kick from a horse, body protectors are compulsory for some competitions. But an increasing number of riders report feeling more confident - and therefore riding more positively - when wearing one in everyday situations from hacking to schooling over fences. Body protectors should be replaced at least every three to five years, after which the impact absorption properties of the foam may have started to decline. if you should have a heavy fall, your body protector should be checked immediately for dents. The foam will expand back to its original shape within 30 minutes; but if a dent is showing on examination, then it’s likely that this part of the garment has lost its impact absorption properties and should be replaced. The last five years has seen a growth in the number of air jackets available, which can be worn over a body protector or in some models integrated to form one item. Originally introduced for the competition rider, they are now widely worn during training, hunting and hacking, as well as at competitions. Whether you are looking to purchase a new hat, body protector or air jacket ask for advice as to the best model for your intended use and make sure you have it fitted by someone who is familiar with the brand and how to correctly fit it.

For more information on safety equipment and the standards it should meet visit www.beta-uk.org

Many riders have “best” hats as well as a hat for everyday and the chances are their everyday hat is the one which has suffered the most incidents as well as being as old as the hills. The trouble is, like with many items of clothing, it takes a bit of getting used to something new and different. it is important to remember that the polystyrene layer inside the hat is crucial in displacing the energy which is caused during an impact. in simple terms if you fall off and hit your hat, an energy force will be created. in a brand new hat the energy will travel around the polystyrene part of the hat, reducing the level of energy which reaches your head at the moment of impact. This is why you are always told to replace your hat after a fall. at the point of impact the polystyrene balls are likely to have become compressed, which may have an effect on the spread of the energy around the hat following any future falls.

Safety first

Gemma Tattersall riding in a Helite Air Jacket

Buying an air jacket is an important investment for any rider so before you part with your money, read our expert advice to help you make the right choice.

M

ore and more riders are erring on the side of caution these days by investing in an air jacket, whether they compete or not. British Eventing recently announced riders can now wear air jackets without a body protector underneath, for both the show jumping and dressage phases. And last year, British Showjumping (BS) and British Dressage permitted the Helite Air Shell Gilet for use in competition, while BS also allows the Helite Blouson. If buying an air jacket is something on your list for 2015, here are some essential factors to consider:

“If you want to buy an air jacket for hacking out, consider a high-viz design to help you stay more visible to other road users.”

Louise Whitaker riding in a Helite Blouson

• It is advisable to have your air jacket expertly fitted. Most stockists will have a suitably qualified person to help you find the right size. For a full list of Helite stockists, visit www.treehouseairjackets.co.uk

• Consider where the triggering system is located. From a safety point of view, if the airbag doesn’t inflate (due to the rider forgetting to clip the lanyard to the saddle strap or an empty canister being used, for example), you need the triggering system to be situated near the least vulnerable part of your upper body. Helite air jackets have these systems on the right side of the lower abdomen. • Choose an air jacket with a quick inflation speed. This is particularly important in the event of a rotational fall, where a rider may be pulled from their horse close to the ground. Note that air jacket inflation speeds across the market vary from 0.1 seconds to 2.5 seconds. • It is essential that high standards are maintained in the manufacturing of air jackets, so do your research to find a reputable company you trust. It’s worth giving the companies a call to compare products. Ensure the company offers you constructive advice without pushing you into making a purchase. • Check the air jacket’s canisters before use to ensure there is no damage or rust. Weighing the canister will help you determine whether it is safe to use. Helite adult canisters should weigh 182g (plus or minus 3g), while children’s should weigh 152g (plus or minus 3g). However, weights will vary depending on the company. • Store canisters at room temperature, rather than in temperatures that are too hot or too cold, as extreme temperatures could affect their inflation performance. • If you are planning to wear clothing over the top of your air jacket, make sure it is loose fitting enough for the air jacket to inflate and that it doesn’t interfere with the lanyard. However, Treehouse would not recommend wearing clothing over the top of your air jacket, unless it cannot be avoided, such as wearing a cross-country bib. • Remember, companies offering air jackets have stands at most of the large shows around the country. This is a good opportunity to go and try on the jackets, seek expert advice and compare products to help you choose the right one for you. For more information and a full list of Helite stockists, telephone 01299 851 625 or visit: www.treehouseairjackets.co.uk p02-5 Contents.indd 6

How to:Gleam in the Ring Jo Bates shares her tips on how to gleam in the ring

with leading show producer, Jo Bates Jo gives the horse’s ears a final trim the day before the show to ensure they are super sharp

T

o help achieve outstanding results, Jo Bates pays great attention to detail in turning the horses out beautifully. The day before the show is a crucial time in the preparation. Jo said: “Our horses are kept trimmedup all the time, as we like to keep them looking smart and it saves on having a big job to do just before a show. On the day before the show, I go over them and make sure they are given a final trim to ensure they look super sharp. The horses generally have their tails cut to the top of their chestnuts, cobs in particular need to have relatively short tails.” Jo uses Absorbine SuperShine Hoof Polish to black out the horses’ chestnuts a day or two before a show.

Each horse in Jo’s yard will be given a thorough bath the day before a show, using a good quality shampoo such as Absorbine’s ShowSheen 2-in-1 Shampoo and Conditioner. Great care is taken to make sure the manes and tails are squeaky clean and ShowSheen is used on the tail for extra shine and to get the tangles out. Jo added: “There is nothing worse than seeing bits of grey dandruff in a black mane once it has been plaited. With the horses that have white socks, we will clip the socks in the week leading up to the show and the day before the show, we wash them with Absorbine ShowClean whitening shampoo, chalk them and then bandage up. We don’t take these bandages off until just before going in the ring. It really makes white socks sparkle.”

Preparation is key

If there is a chance that a horse will need studs on the day of the show Jo is a big advocate of cleaning the stud holes out the day before with a stud tap and filling the holes in with new cotton wool. She said: “This is a brilliant timesaver at a show and it is far better to realise you have a stone stuck in one of the holes at home, the day before the show, rather than ten minutes before you need to get on the horse!”

Lightweight TRIED&TESTED

Turnouts

Tried & Tested Spring is that strange time of year when the temperature throughout the day can vary quite significantly. The good thing about the rugs we have been testing is they are all breathable and are perfect to leave on all day, even if the sun does make an appearance.

It is beautifully made from a very strong fabric, with 100g fill, which is enough to protect on chilly days. The beauty of this rug is that a 300g liner can be added to make it a heavy duty winter rug. It also has a detachable hood. It is an investment piece, once you have tried it you will wonder how you coped before.

Mark Todd Lightweight Combo Turnout Rug This useful lightweight rug is generously cut, with a large pleated tail flap and long integral neck cover for top to tail protection from the elements. Colour: Navy/Aqua Sizes: 5’6” - 7’3” RRP: £107.99 www.wefi.co.uk LR Comment: This is a great rug for that transitional time of year, when the weather can still be quite cruel and wet, yet the temperature doesn’t warrant a middleweight rug. It fitted very well and was light and easy to put on.

General Rehabilitation after Injury Words by Ed Lyall Vet Med Cert EM (StudMed) MRCVS of the Arundel Equine Hospital

H

orses may have to undergo a period of box rest following the diagnosis of an injury. Rest is necessary as it reduces the force and strain on an injury and allows it time to heal. It is important when returning a horse back to work that this is not done too quickly and that you are patient and observant. Observation for signs such as inflammation at the site of initial injury or lameness could indicate that rehabilitation is progressing too quickly. The definition of rehabilitation is “to make fit again and that really means to make fit for the job that the horse is intended to do. When a horse stands in a stable it will lose muscle tone and bulk, its bones will demineralise a little and it will loose cardiovascular fitness. Interestingly a horse will maintain cardiovascular fitness for approximately four weeks at the level that it was at prior to the commencement for the rest period. When the horse returns to work its muscles will adapt quicker than bone, which must be born in mind as bone injuries such as stress fractures could occur if progress is too quick. Muscle mass and strength quickly returns once exercise is resumed. It is important not to allow a horse on box rest to become too fat as that too will add excessive load to the limbs on return to work.

Working together

The design of any rehabilitation program must be based on the accurate diagnosis of the original musculoskeletal problem, for example swimming should not be considered for a horse with a back problem. Designing a rehab program requires Rehabilitation will also include the inclusion of not only vets, but support from the physiotherapist also therapists such as physios and chiropractors, the farrier must also be included to make sure the patient is appropriately shod for the condition being treated. Rehab can begin when the patient is on box rest, for example after joint surgery passive manipulation of the joint to maintain a good range of motion can be performed. Often during the box rest period physiotherapy and massage therapies can be implemented along with stretching exercises such as the baited mobilisation technique of the carrot stretch, which most people are familiar with.

The first step in rehab

The foundation for all rehab programs is walking; this controlled exercise stimulates the maturation of repair tissue within bone, cartilage, ligaments and tendons. Initial exercise must be controlled to prevent further injury, hand walking or walking under saddle is preferable to turn out, as horses tend not to respect their injuries and can easily exacerbate them. Horse walkers are a good way of increasing the level of exercise and keeping the horse under control. Walking twice daily will alleviate the boredom of box rest for the patient. It is worth leading the horse from different sides each time to avoid it becoming bent to the left around the handler. Sometimes we advocate the use of a Pessoa training aid to walk the horse in, the sensation of the rope on the back legs above the hocks stimulates symmetry of step, Pessoas can be replaced with rubber therabands attached to a surcingle for walking in hand or attached to the girth for walking under saddle. These proprioceptive techniques will encourage hind limb engagement.

Sometimes it is recommended walking the horse in a Pessoa, to improve the symmetry of the step

Trotting poles

The number of weeks walking will depend on the nature of the injury and the length of the box rest period. Trotting under saddle is the next Chains applied to the hind step. As the trot work progresses pasterns can increase the flight of the limb then consideration should be given to the use of other ways to stimulate muscle conditioning and development. The use of trotting poles will make the abdominal and the hip flexor muscles contract, these can be raised at alternate ends to further stimulate the neck and abdominal muscles. Chains applied to the hind pasterns can increase the proprioception and increase the arc of the flight of the limb, as can weighted boots. Walking up and particularly down inclines will stimulate contraction of the abdominal muscles and make the hind limbs come under the horse. There are also complex taping techniques that can be applied to stimulate specific muscles to work. Water treadmills and swimming pools are a good way of allowing the cardiovascular development of the horse without excessive impact on the limbs. Take advice from a knowledgeable vet or physio about the available rehab techniques to ensure your horse is returned to its full athletic potential after a rest period.

Sweet Itch Solutions Sweet Itch is a serious medical condition causing suffering to many horses and ponies. It is caused by an allergic response to the saliva of the Culicoides midge. When bitten, proteins present in midge saliva can prompt uncomfortable immune reactions in horses. By way of comparison, equine hypersensitivity to midge saliva is like human sensitivity to pollen in hay fever sufferers, but with the added potential for infections.

O

nce Sweet Itch has taken hold, treating the condition and bringing effective relief is difficult. The more a horse itches, the more it rubs and bites itself, and thus the more it itches. When it comes to Sweet Itch, the best method of defence is prevention, although no measure is entirely fail-safe. The condition is more prevalent in warm regions and during the months of spring, summer and autumn when midges are most active. With this in mind and the spring weather welcoming a bit more sunshine, it is worth having a management plan in place to keep your horses itch-free, especially those that are sufferers: ● Midges are most prevalent in areas near water and woodland, so keep susceptible horses well away. A windy hillside is ideal as midges cannot fly in winds exceeding 5mph. ● Keep prone horses stabled at dusk and dawn when midges are most active. When stabled, provide a fan that keeps air circulating and prevents midges from entering and feeding. A fly screen above the stable door may also help. ● Invest in a quality fly rug to help keep midges off the skin, mane

54-55-hols-lrapril15.indd 2

and tail. A rug that extends over the neck, face, dock, under the belly and part-way down the tail is great for restricting midges and keeping them away from problem areas. Verity Beaton, Equine Marketing Manager at VioVet, gives her top tip: ‘Ensure the rug is worn now before the signs of Sweet Itch appear, otherwise your horse will trash his expensive rug by scratching it!’ ● Try a skin or Sweet Itch specific supplement as many have immune and skin protecting qualities which may help reduce the allergic response in your horse. ● Use electric fence to keep your horse away from scratching posts in the field. VioVet has a huge range of products to help you cope and manage Sweet Itch for this coming season - all at great prices. www.viovet.co.uk/horses

Tricia Bracegirdle fitting a saddle

Above left: Your horse can drop off or put weight on over the season so keep an eye on this as it will affect saddle fit.

Travelling to shows during the season can also impact on your horse’s weight

I

Tricia Bracegirdle

How does your saddle sit? With the competition season starting to get underway, the fit of your saddle should be something you keep an eye on as Senior Saddle Technician Tricia Bracegirdle of Childéric Saddles explains.

t’s not just top professionals who require regular saddle checks, even if you simply enjoying hacking and a small amount of schooling, your horse’s shape does change seasonally, even if it’s down to the grass or an increase in your training programme. The problem is that many riders try and judge by eye whether their saddle fits, but actually even a millimetre difference can mean discomfort for your horse and signal the start of behavioural problems, which could then be put down to your horse being “just naughty”, when in fact he is uncomfortable and trying to tell you this.

Most common problems

The two most common problems are gaining weight and losing muscle. The latter more rarely during the summer months, unless the horse finds things stressful and/or drops off while travelling or going to shows. The most common saddle fitting problems associated with weight gain or muscle development are change of balance, usually up in front, and the saddle moving or become less stable. The most common problems associated with saddle fitting for horses which have dropped off or lost muscle, are the saddle dropping down onto the withers changing the balance and affecting shoulder movement and also movement of the saddle.

Don’t try to fix it

Very often people will grab the nearest

fluffy/padded saddle pad in an attempt to “fix” the problem, however it’s important to get your saddler to look at the saddle with the pad you intend to use, to ensure it doesn’t cause further problems, such as tightness around the wither or cause the saddle and rider to tip back or forward etc. Sometimes a different shaped girth can solve the movement problem, so we must look at this as a solution for seasonal shape changers.

Are you riding fit?

Another consideration, which riders should also look at is their changing shape. Rider fitness can also affect the fit of your saddle as can symmetry, so if you are coming back into riding after time off, then you also need to let your saddler know, as this can also explain any issues, if after horse and saddle examination, there doesn’t seem to be in an issue. Saddlers will always look at the rider as part of the fitting service, but if we get some background information early on, this very often will help us. Remember getting your saddle checked regularly is as important as keeping your vaccinations in date or your horse’s farrier appointments, so book in your saddler before a potential problem develops, so that you and your horse can enjoy the season ahead without interruption. FEED NEWS NAF sponsored rider Laura Collett and her promising young horse, Pamero

Words by NAF and picture by TopShots Photography

T

he majority of us, as equestrian enthusiasts tend to do the most with our horses throughout the summer months. This is usually down to increased hours of daylight, warmer weather and more frequent competitions. However, how many of us change our feeding regime in the summer when compared to the winter months? Many of us tend to naturally feed more in the summer; however, one of the golden rules of feeding is “feed in accordance to work done”. Overfeeding can result in an overload of starch intake as well as other complications, not to mention the waste of feed not being broken down by the horse. Whether you are feeding for high level competition or for light work you want to make sure your horse is getting the most from his diet. The best way to ensure this is to feed a concentrated feed balancer, to nutritionally support the gut and optimise digestive function. As the cornerstone of health in the horse, when the gut is functioning correctly it will undoubtedly reflect in his condition and performance. A good balancer also provides a balanced supply of high quality vitamins, minerals and micronutrients to support general health and vitality on a daily basis. So, all in all a daily balancer will help your horse obtain the most from his feed, and negate the need to feed large amounts. Greater work demands on our horses bring on an increased requirement for a wider range of energy resources. This means that in order for each horse to develop his fitness and performance and, consequently his and your enjoyment of the busier summer months, specific additional nutrients must be considered.

Understanding salts When our horses sweat they lose essential body salts, otherwise known as plasma salts. These are Sodium, Calcium, Potassium and Magnesium, which must be fed in a well-balanced electrolyte in order to maintain the salt balance in the body. To indicate the importance of salt, an average horse can lose up to 90g of body salts in just two hours’ work, emphasising the need to replace the salts. The importance of water must also be highlighted at this point as around 70% of the horse’s bodyweight is water. An average 500kg horse in light work will require about 25 litres of water a day. This need is increased to as much as 300% or around 75 litres if strenuous work is undertaken, this should be provided through a combination of water and feed. If the horse is not rehydrated, there can be some very notable signs such as, reduced appetite, poor performance and general lack of “oomph”. Water is required in many bodily functions, in particular eating. This is because it is required to aid the passage of food, digestion and absorption from the gut; it can prove fatal if the horse is not rehydrated adequately. In order to help keep your horse rehydrated, clean and fresh water should always be available, especially when eating to help aid the digestion.

Feeding for the Competition Season Rehydration aids recovery When feeding salts, it is important to ensure the horse has access to water to replace the fluid lost in sweat. This will also work towards replenishing the natural reserves the body needs to recharge. In turn, helping them to recover faster and work towards the horse being able to remain fit and healthy in order to perform to its best ability. When feeding electrolytes, avoid feeding concentrated forms such as pastes as these can draw the water out of the gut and in turn leave the horse feeling more dehydrated! Make sure that when you feed electrolytes the horse has plenty of water available, even if feeding in a moist feed. There are some liquids on the market which can be administered directly into the horse’s mouth as a form of on the spot rehydration, therefore helping to aid the recovery process as the earliest possible time while still helping to restore the electrolyte and water balance to avoid dehydration, loss of coordination and muscular stiffness.

Getting the balance right It is not just the essential salts lost through sweat, so too is Iron. Iron is important for red blood cell formation as well as concentration and is therefore a vital ingredient towards the health and performance of the horse. Indications of low Iron levels include lethargy and a lowering in performance, which can lead to anaemia if not addressed correctly. Ensuring the horse’s diet is supplemented with an Iron rich supplement can help to restore the nutritional balance and help the horse to maintain their performance. Copper and Zinc must also come into the equation in order to maximise the benefits of supplementing Iron. As with everything in nature, a balance must always be maintained. For instance feeding Iron without Copper may cause a Copper deficiency in the system, while Zinc is used in many enzyme reactions. Therefore it is important when looking to supplement Iron to look for these other vital ingredients. Iron also assists with stamina which is why it is also important to include the B group vitamins in the diet. Both folic acid and vitamin B12 are necessary for haemoglobin production in the blood which transports oxygen to the muscles and therefore proves to be a vital element for maintaining both stamina and performance. In conclusion, supporting our horses with a concentrated feed balancer helps them to fully utilise their daily diet while catering for their day to day vitamin, mineral and trace element requirements. Additionally, we can benefit our horses by simply replacing the nutrients lost in sweat to help them rehydrate quicker. This in turn helps them to recover more rapidly and be ready to maximise their performance and give you their best consistently.

FEED NEWS

Focus on Condition & Topline There are a variety of reasons why your horse may need help to produce topline. As the days grow longer and the show season starts, your horse’s workload may increase and it is important he has the right level of nutrition to help produce muscle and ultimately topline.

Rowen Barbary Sumo Original

British Horse Feeds Fibre-Beet

With a 50% oil content Sumo Original is an extremely valuable feed for all horses from youngsters to veterans, especially when trying to perfect the condition and enrich the bloom in the coat. Providing super high levels of oils and fatty acids alongside the necessary nutrients, specifically antioxidants ensures excellent overall condition, helping encourage weight gain and improve topline. Calorie dense, it is ideal for horses with a limited appetite and as it is virtually free from starch and sugars it can be fed safely to laminitic horses and ponies. Sumo Original is supplied in 10kg bags which lasts a 500kg horse for 40 days.

Fibre-Beet is a formulated blend containing all the benefits of the original Speedi-Beet product with added high quality Alfalfa for condition. Alfalfa can help with topline and that extra finishing touch for competition horses or simply in maintaining weight and a healthy, shiny coat. Fibre-Beet is soaked and ready to feed in only 45 minutes in cold water or 15 minutes in hot water.

Telephone 01948 880598 or visit rowenbarbary.co.uk

HorseHage and Mollichaff HorseHage offers four varieties of dust-free bagged forage, with an option to suit all types of horses and ponies, from laminitics, which can safely be fed the Timothy and High Fibre varieties, to performance horses in hard work which require the optimum levels of protein provided by the Ryegrass or Alfalfa HorseHage. Good quality chaffs, such as Mollichaff, can help to bulk out the hard feed and by stimulating the production of saliva and slowing the passage of food through the gut, can help to promote good digestion and will satisfy a stabled horse’s psychological need to chew. There are several varieties and one that is very popular for the show season is Mollichaff ShowShine - a cherry-flavoured, high oil chaff, for the ultimate in show condition. The Mollichaff range also includes three complete fibre feeds for horses and ponies, which can be an economical choice for owners, as only additional forage is required. These complete feeds are: Mollichaff Calmer, Mollichaff Condition and Mollichaff HoofKind. Telephone 01803 527257 or visit www.horsehage.co.uk

NAF Pink Powder Nutritional support of the gut is the cornerstone of health and vitality in horses and will be reflected as a horse in perfect condition. In the Pink Powder is the concentrated feed balancer with live probiotic yeast for perfect condition. It is one of the most nutritionally advanced nutritional preparations available to improve the diet of sport and leisure horses. It is a unique concentrated formula containing live yeasts and probiotics designed to optimise gut function and the natural digestive process. This enables the horse to utilise his diet and maintain perfect condition. Plus, because it contains high quality vitamins, minerals and micronutrients, it supports perfect health, vitality and performance. www.naf-equine.eu/uk

TopSpec Super Conditioning Flakes TopSpec Super Conditioning Flakes are full of naturally oil-rich ingredients and are very palatable. ‘Naturally oil-rich ingredients’ contain intracellular oil which is oil that occurs with the cells of a plant. Feeding intracellular oil is a very palatable and highly-available way of providing oil in the diet. These calories are balanced with high quality soya as a protein source and with available sources of calcium and salt added. TopSpec Super Conditioning Flakes can be used to improve condition; provide balanced calories and protein for performance; provide a balance of fast-releasing energy with oil for stamina; or reduce the weight of current hard feed intake without reducing performance or condition. Particularly beneficial for show horses and ponies, bloodstock being prepared for sales, hardworking horses that need high levels of calories without excessively large feeds and elderly horses that struggle to maintain condition. Telephone 01845 565030 or visit www.topspec.com

Aivly Conditioning Cubes Aivly Conditioning Cubes & Aivly Conditioning Mix are ideal for horses and ponies requiring topline and condition. They are both highly palatable and highly digestible. Containing a full spec of vitamins and minerals, they help to promote condition and topline, as well as helping to maintain a calm temperament and support and build muscle development. Based in Ringwood in Hampshire telephone Aivly on 01425 472341 or visit www.aivly.co.uk

Haygain Hay Steamer

The warmer, less windy days of spring and summer can mean that the air in the stable is more static, so pollen, fungal and bacteria spores will hang-around in the environment, increasing the levels of respirable dust in the air. It is in these situations that the provision of low-dust high fibre forage is extremely important. Haygain steaming has been scientifically proven to reduce respirable particles, such as bacteria and mould spores, to produce palatable hygienically clean forage. Once steamed, hay remains highly palatable and low in respirable particles, so one bale can last the horse for days. Telephone 0333 200 5233 or visit www.haygain.com

Supplements for the Competition Horse

Other News...

Lifeforce Elite from Alltech

Equine America Lamigard TRT Pellets are a highly effective supplement for horses and ponies and can be used at high levels in the short term, and at a maintenance level for long term health. Lamigard TRT will ensure your horse’s feet stay healthy all year round and will complement a careful feeding regime. Lamigard TRT contains powerful ingredients to help mop up excess free radicals which settle in the feet, supporting a healthy enzyme level within the hooves and providing nutrients to the internal sensitive structures, as well as promoting external hoof wall condition. Equine America LAMIGARD XXXtreme Paste provides powerful anti-oxidants to support the health of the feet, alongside targeted nutrition to encourage general health. LAMIGARD XXXtreme paste should be given over a 14 day period, a total of five oral pastes (servings can vary according to size of horse or pony). Follow up with Lamigard TRT Pellets or Lamigard TRT Solution to support a healthy enzyme level within the hooves and provide nutrients to the internal sensitive structures, as well as promoting external hoof wall condition.

It is estimated that 60 – 80% of competition horses suffer from gastric ulcers, due to the high concentrate diet needed to fulfil their energy requirements and also the stress induced by their training schedules, travelling and limited hours grazing. Competition horses are more likely to be stabled for long periods of time, if these horses are not provided with adequate fibre, they are unable to exhibit their natural desire to chew. The chewing of fibre produces more saliva than the chewing of concentrate feed; this saliva is the main buffer to the gastric ulcer causing stomach acid. By supplementing the diet with yeast cultures like those found in Lifeforce Elite you can stabilise the good bacteria in the gut, whilst guarding against bad bacteria, helping to maintain a near normal ph in the gut and protect the immune system, therefore improving fibre digestion. Lifeforce Elite from Alltech is specially designed for competition horses, working to provide a solution to manage the effects a competitive work environment can have on a horse’s well-being and helps to support the immune system to optimise performance and aid resistance to stress. By promoting beneficial gut microflora, Lifeforce Elite helps to restore the population of good bacteria where an influx of undigested concentrate feed has altered the hindgut acidity, creating a healthy digestive environment. Telephone 01780 764512 or visit www.lifeforcehorse.co.uk

TopSpec Calmer TopSpec Calmer is designed to be fed to horses and ponies with anxious temperaments, particularly those that cannot cope with stressful situations such as showing, travelling and competing. Not all horses are anxious for the same reason so TopSpec Calmer has been developed with much more than a ‘single ingredient’ approach. It contains a pure protected yeast, MOS, B vitamins, magnesium, tryptophan and sepiolite clay, which all act in different ways to help calm and relax responsive horses. TopSpec Calmer is a palatable, caramel-flavoured, additive to be mixed into the feed. It can be fed daily to stressed or anxious horses or occasionally to help horses cope with stressful situations eg, competitions, travelling and fireworks. TopSpec Calmer can improve performance by improving focus and reducing the effects of stress. Some ingredients start to work within two hours but maximum effect will be seen within three weeks.

TopSpec launch new TopChop Sport New TopChop Sport is a blend of specially selected, high-temperature dried, British grasses and alfalfa. This very palatable chop is lightly coated with soya oil and is dust-extracted. The formula for TopChop Sport was tested and developed at the Middle Park Equine Research Unit and has been approved by the nutritional team as suitable for all horses and ponies other than those prone to laminitis and that need to lose weight. TopChop Sport is a high quality chop that can be fed solely with a TopSpec feed balancer or supplement. Additional feed e.g. TopSpec Cubes and Mixes, can be added if extra nutrients for work or condition are required. TopChop Sport is dust-extracted and high-temperature dried. These two procedures minimise potential mould, making the chop suitable for horses and ponies with respiratory problems. Telephone 01845 565030 or visit www.topspec.com

Verdo Horse Bedding

The most powerful and concentrated L-Tryptophan syringe on the market. This new syringe is triple the strength of the normal AnxiKalm 60ml syringe and at 30ml is half the volume. The unique gel formulation ensures a fast rate of absorption so the active ingredients get to work rapidly. Administration and quantity needs to be varied according to each individual horse or pony. Normally best given in a three hour window prior to riding or competition with the last being given at one hour 30 mins.

If you are looking to save time this show season, choosing a highly absorbent bedding is key in your battle against stable stains. Verdo Horse Bedding is extremely good at soaking up the wet: able to absorb up to three times its own weight, so it is easy to skip out and remove wet patches. Skipping out regularly and last thing at night is also important before you head off home helps to keep the stable clean and tidy. If you are going to a show, remember to take towels, shampoo and water with you to the show for those last minute clean ups. Always travel your show horse in a tail bandage and if you want to save the rest of his tail from getting dirty, then invest in a tail guard with a handy waterproof bag. Chalking your horse’s white socks works well on dry legs and for show sheen shop around for oil free versions. Oil based coat shines will attract dust and your horse could end up looking dirtier than when you began in the morning. And one last tip, choose a quick drying hoof varnish or treatment and don’t apply till you get to the show ground, as it will wear off all over your travel boots.
