s I write this, it is hard to believe how quickly 2013 has disappeared. As soon as Badminton arrives, the team here seem to be caught up in a whirlwind of outdoor events and shows, which continue until everything moves back indoors for HOYS. We now look forward to Olympia and for me this show always marks the real countdown to Christmas. There is something magical about the show and it is always wonderful to cheer Santa in his sleigh. With only three shopping Saturdays until Christmas, we thought you might need a bit of help in deciding what to buy your family and friends. If you are feeling in need of inspiration, we have some great Gift Ideas on page 48. And if after all the stresses of Christmas you feel you deserve a treat, why not try and win a prize in our Bumper Christmas Giveaways on page 38. There are over £5,000 of prizes to be won and all you have to do is complete the form on page 43 and return it to the Localrider office before 31st January 2014. This issue is busting with news and reports from across the region and there is lots to celebrate too. Turn to page 14 to read about the Sussex-based British Junior Reining squad, which won Bronze at the European Championships held in Italy in September. Then on page 18 catch up with the local drivers who were competing at the World Driving Championships in France. Edenbridge-based Anna Grayston put in a fantastic performance to win individual Bronze in the Pony Pair Driving Championship. There have also been lots of South East based national champions at Pony Club, Riding Club and Inter-School competitions. We have tried to include as many of them as possible, but I apologise to anyone we have missed out. Do stay in touch over the Christmas period and remember we love to hear your stories and see your pictures, either email them to the office or share with us on Facebook. Merry Christmas from the Team at Localrider!

Toggi and Champion to support Jason Webb The Toggi and Champion brands are passionate supporters of equestrianism and equestrian talent and are delighted to add Jason Webb and his team at Australian Horsemanship to their stable of top riders. Sarah-Jane Fedarb, managing director of Finest Brands International (the company behind the Toggi and Champion brands) comments: “We first came across Jason when one of our team attended one of his clinics with her own horse. She was hugely impressed with Jason’s practical, easy to understand approach to training horses and his focus not only on the immediate end result, but on the whole journey to ensure safer, more progressive training for both horse and rider. It became clear to us that Jason and his ethos of ‘creating a balance between horse & rider’ was an approach that fits perfectly with our Toggi and Champion brands and we’re delighted to support Jason and his team in their work.” www.toggi.com www.championhats.co.uk

An incredible 4000 wins for AP McCoy Towcester racecourse witnessed a landmark day in racing as AP McCoy achieved the unprecedented milestone of 4,000 jump race winners on 7th November 2013. The Northamptonshire racecourse, which has sponsorship support from HAYGAIN hay steamers, experienced huge crowds and saw the world’s media descend to see if this would be the day AP McCoy would notch up his 4000th career win. After winning, AP said: “It’s amazing and it couldn’t have happened any better. It was fantastic to have Jonjo, JP, Chanelle, Eve and Archie Peadar here. I am lucky, I love my job. As do all sportsmen who get to do what they love for a living! It’s important for me as a jockey to set myself targets and the next target is hopefully to end the season as champion jockey, which it is at the beginning of every season. If I’m still in one piece to get to Martin (Pipe’s) record (of 4,182) that would be a special achievement because he’s a fantastic man and a great friend. We’ve had a bit of banter about it, so hopefully at some point I will be able to maybe get close to his record, if not beat it.”

These insoles are ideal for use in winter thanks to the natural thermo-regulating properties of merino wool which keeps the foot warm when it is cold. Yet when the warmer months arrive, you can still be confident of staying comfortable as the wool keeps the foot cooler in hot weather, wicking moisture away from your foot. The naturally occurring lanolin in the wool also has an antibacterial property which keeps the insoles fresh for longer. Superfeet’s supportive FOUNDATION™ foam provides the durable biomechanical support the company is worldrenowned for, which helps to absorb impact. Its Encapsulating Stabilizer System (ESS) keeps you supported, aligned and comfortable during any activity, whilst a deep heel cup also cradles the heel’s fat pad to improve natural shock absorption. www.superfeet.co.uk

FEATURE

A Day in the life...

of a mobile horse tack retailer By Mandie Dawson of retailer Libbys International

O

ur family and friends think we are part timers... that we work a couple of days a week, and then put up our feet until the next weekend. How far from the truth that is. Only other mobile retailers will appreciate how much planning, ordering, internet sales and bookings are involved when we are not actually on the road; and sometimes when we are. Libbys Horse Tack and Dog Leads is a well established business, and I purchased the mobile retail side of the business in 2010, having been in sales all my life, but not in the retail aspect. I am not sure in hindsight whether I truly understood what an undertaking this would be, but sometimes ignorance is bliss. There are many highs and sometimes lows of moving your shop nearly every week; early mornings, and long distances to be covered and build up times. The high is that you have new customers, the majority of whom are a delight; they are usually attending an event which they have looked forward to and are in a holiday mood; you get caught up with their enthusiasm and passion for a fantastic sport and hobby. The low part is the break down of the shop after usually a long day on your feet, and the thought of the (sometimes long) journey home. People do think it must be lovely seeing all these shows and different parts of the country, which it is, but what they don’t usually understand is that we are working long hours and don’t have the time to appreciate a lot of what is going on around us; but saying that, we stay in some beautiful settings and see the seasons change; everyday and each show is different. We are fortunate that we have great products that our customers want; we have control and can amend, alter and adjust many items that are manufactured in the factory in Norfolk with the sister company, Polypads. We retail the innovative RS-tor safety aid, and also produce the lungie bungie for Team Fredericks, and are able to advise and help our customers with these and many other items that we stock. That is a real joy, to meet and help our customers. The reason that Libby’s International has such a following is that we have the experience and know-how to assist and advise, with the backup of a UK based manufacturer who knows their stuff, and whose customer service is second to none. I cannot over emphasise the importance to horse owners of meeting retailers face-to-face. This is really the best way to get the best product that’s right for you and your horse, at a price you can afford. Our market-place is dynamic and highly competitive, and if Libby’s International can’t supply exactly to a customer’s needs, we can often recommend someone who can, from our wide range of associates. In challenging cases, we can even organise bespoke manufacture. We also like to build up strong relationships with our existing customers – and love to get the latest low-down on their recent stable additions or competition successes; whether at local shows or international Grand Prix events. To sum it all up, yes, it is a good life; the other retailers at shows provide great support, and if you need any help, it is always given willingly, and good friendships are made. Every show and day is different, I am just glad I made the decision to become the master of my own destiny, and buy into a fantastic brand.

British Reining squad bring back Bronze

Isobel Le Pla riding Wimpys Little Gal

FEI European Reining Championships Manerbio, Italy 13th September 2013

A squad of three Kent and Sussex based teenagers won Bronze at the Junior European Reining Championships, held in Italy this September. Here we share their story…

Tabitha Sternberg Allen riding Yelena My Way

T

he 2013 FEI European Reining Championships for Juniors and Young riders was hosted by the Italian Reining Horse Association at the Palasturla Arena in Manerbio, Italy, and attracted entries from six nations. The European Championships is the highest medal opportunity for Junior and Young RIders as they are not able to compete at The World Equestrian Games or The Olympics. Britain fielded the youngest team in the Junior Championships, comprising of Tabitha Sternberg Allen, Isobel Le Pla and Fiona Howard, also making it the smallest team. A full team consists of four riders, with the top three scores being used. Despite huge pressure, knowing that with only three riders they had no option of a drop score, the girls put in solid runs leaving them on tenterhooks waiting for the final German rider to compete. Although the Germans had a full team plus two individuals the pressure became too much and the British girls claimed the Bronze medal. Fiona Howard, a student at Benenden School in Kent was the youngest rider in the competition. She was joined by Tabitha Sternberg Allen, an Equestrian scholarship student from St Leonards Mayfield, was competing on the second oldest horse. Tabitha’s parents, Francesca Sternberg and Doug Allen, are the proprietors of Sterling Quarter Horses in Sussex and both compete internationally. Completing the trio was Isobel Le Pla, a student at Robertsbridge Community College. Isobel delighted her school by becoming their first FEI Medalist and she was competing at her first international event. All three schools were fantastically supportive, even though Tabitha and Isobel are in the midst of their GCSE courses. The girls train with Doug Allen at Sterling Quarter Horses, Bodiam, East Sussex, and he took on the role of Chef d’Equipe for this event. After the medal ceremony Doug said: “I am really delighted with the girls, they rode very well, used their heads and didn’t crack under the pressure, it bodes incredibly well for the future.”

Tabitha, who is 15 was the highest scoring rider of the team in both rounds on Yelena My Way. She said: “I am so excited for the team and incredibly grateful and proud of my horse Milo. He might be an oldie, but he’s a goldie!” Isobel, also 15, was clearly thrilled with her first competitive trip abroad, and said: “Wilma was fantastic, I had only ridden her once before this event, but she looked after me and tried really hard. I am so grateful to Rosanne Sternberg for lending her to me and allowing me this wonderful

opportunity.” Fourteen-year-old Fiona had a fast, but exciting run and said of her horse Spookanic: “He gets really excited in there when he knows it’s a big event, but I’ve had a great season with him and I was really proud to represent my country here.” All three riders advanced to the individual finals where Tabitha finished 12th, Isobel 13th and Fiona 15th. The girls wanted to acknowledge and thank Francesca Sternberg, Doug Allen, Nicola Peters and Jane Muir for all their

help and support. “It was an incredibly tiring week, but we’ve loved every minute of it.” said the girls. Isobel as well as training with Doug has been coached by Nicola Peters over the last six months. Nicola is a Level 2 Coach, also at Sterling, and was herself trained by Doug. The girls are to be selected for next year’s American Quarter Horse Youth World Cup Team competition in Texas, USA. but for now it’s back to the books!

VET REC O

The key to winter condition. “Being a vet, I am very sceptical about product claims and always research what to feed my own horse, Elgar. Last winter I fed Elgar Blue Chip Original and he looked amazing. I liked the fact that the product is based on sound, scientific research. Now that I’ve proved for myself that it’s so easy to maintain condition throughout the winter with Blue Chip Original, I will now be advising my clients whose horses struggled through last winter to feed Blue Chip Original this year.”

“As a vet I get to find out about most products on the market. Blue Chip Original is the product that I recommend to anyone who struggles with their horses’ condition. Not only have I used Blue Chip Original to bring my shire horse, Hope, back from near-death when I rescued her, I also have used it for the last 10 years on my 18 year old, Midas. Without feeding Blue Chip Original Midas loses his weight and condition during the winter, no matter what else is in his diet. I wouldn’t be without Blue Chip Original during the winter months”

FEATURE Tools of the trade

Barefoot horses are commonly seen across a number of disciplines

K

eeping our horses and ponies barefoot has become increasingly popular in recent years. A range of health and welfare issues have been highlighted to the equestrian community promoting the benefits of barefoot including; a natural management of our equines, a reduced risk of thrush in the foot, a healthier digital cushion in the barefoot horse, and a more correct break over during movement, to name but a few.

Is barefoot for you?

Hand-held rasps allow owners to round and roll the edge of the hooves to compliment regular trimming from a hoof care professional

To support the barefoot movement a host of innovative products have been developed including the Rider’s Rasp, available from World Wide Tack, to help equine owners maintain and support the integrity of their horse or pony’s barefoot hooves. The Rider’s Rasp, designed especially for owners to help maintain the condition of their equine’s feet in between professional trims. By allowing horse owners to quickly, easily and safely control the natural flare of the hoof and round and roll the edge of the hooves the Rider’s Rasp compliments regular trimming from a hoof care professional. Regular rasping of the foot encourages symmetrical growth off the hoof allowing healthier hoof growth and helping to eliminate soundness problems from developing by limiting flares or dishes of the foot. A significant benefit of barefoot hoof care is that if your horse or pony suffers a chip or split in the hoof, the Rider’s Rasp can allow you to quickly and efficiently help tackle the problem by smoothing the damaged hoof. Perfect for barefoot horses and ponies, and also the shod horse which has lost a shoe, the Rider’s Rasp is a must-have, handy tool to keep at the yard! For more information about the Rider’s Rasp and how it can help promote natural, barefoot health visit www.worldwidetack.com

The natural hoof movement has continued to pick up steam in equestrian circles and barefoot horses are now commonly seen across a number of disciplines – including eventing, show jumping and dressage. Barefoot management requires that the equine’s hooves are kept in prime condition and that every horse should be treated as an individual. This means that it is not just hoof quality that needs to be considered, other factors such as the environment, diet and lifestyle of the equine will affect how successfully any horse adapts to a barefoot regime. Maintenance of the barefoot hoof is also vital. It is crucial that the hoof capsule is kept in correct shape and balanced alongside maintaining correct break-over; the process of the heel leaving the ground and the rotation of the toe.

Izzy has the WOW factor Kent-based, Izzy Chaplin has secured sponsorship from WOW Saddles. 17-year-old Izzy has recently been selected for the GB Junior Dressage Potential Squad and was previously on the National Pony Training scheme with Lys De Monsieur. Having represented the Southern region on numerous occasions she is now aiming to train her Dutch mare, Taijdora, up to PSG level ready for the end of 2014. She will also be looking forward to her debut performance at the Winter Dressage Championships in April for the Petplan Equine Area Festival finals at Medium level. Izzy said: “I am really pleased to be working with WOW Saddles. The flexible tree in the saddle allows my horse, Taijdora, to move with so much more freedom, and this has already vastly improved our performance.” Izzy continued: “I found Taijdora (Dora) in Holland, where she had just had a foal, but we could see she had so much natural ability and an amazing temperament. She arrived home in December 2012 and we have been working towards the Junior Tests and improving our partnership. This year, I have competed at Premier Leagues, BYRDS Home International and have qualified for the Petplan Medium Open Dressage Championships. Our aims

Izzy Taylor and Taijdora have benefited from sponsorship from Kent- based WOW Saddles are to train to PSG ready to contest Young Riders next year and to go out at the Premier Leagues at Junior FEI level in the upcoming season. I train with Sarah Millis and Darryl Thickett.” The team at WOW Saddles is looking forward to supporting Izzy as she progresses up the levels. “Izzy

demonstrated passion and dedication to her sport,” said David Kempsell of WOW Saddles. “Her talent shone through right from the moment we were introduced to her, and her sympathetic approach to her training and riding reinforces our ethos. I believe she is the perfect representative for our product.”

The Rise of Sonny Boy II Words by Cathie Hawkins Who would have thought that in April 2012 a little grey pony would come into our yard (and hearts) and turn out to be a superstar? I asked Yvie Jeanne to ride Sonny to find out what sort of job he could do as my daughter, Rachael, wanted to concentrate on showing. Sonny has always been a good all round Pony Club pony, so our first task was to take him cross-country schooling to find out if he would be bold enough to event – well he certainly showed us! Bold and talented too. Towards the end of May Sonny and Yvie competed in their first event at Mattingley in the 90cm class, making short work of it. Tweseldown followed two weeks later, it was their first BE event where they finished third. As Sonny seemed very comfortable in his new role we entered his first BE100 at Borde Hill. This was when we started to realise how talented Sonny is. As the season progressed, their partnership grew as did their trust in each other, making us realise that that BE Novice was a possibility. At the end of 2012 they completed their first Novice at Little Downham. Although Sonny was supposed to be sold at the end of the season, remarkably no one bought this incredible pony, so Yvie was given a second season on him. The season had a wet start so their first event was the BE100 at Tweseldown where they finished sixth, then they went straight back up to Novice. Sonny has shown that he is as awesome as we had thought and at South of England the pair finished fourth in a section full of top names riders, including William Fox-Pitt, Tina Cook and Lucinda Fredericks. Sometimes people laugh at our pony warming-up, but they soon stop laughing when they see him start jumping. Yvie would dearly love to keep the ride on him, but he is again for sale so that Rachael can buy a new pony. Right: Yvie Jeanne has been eventing Sonny Boy II at Novice level this season

New Parelli HorseManShip Book Out Now!

T

he New Parelli HorseManShip book is the definitive theory guide for the Parelli Program. At over 90 pages, this comprehensive book features in-depth explanations of horse behaviour and psychology, the habits of a horseman, and what it takes for a horse and human to truly become partners. Capped off with a handsome hard cover, spectacular photography, an accompanying DVD, enlightening anecdotes from Pat and Linda Parelli and much more, HorseManShip is the ultimate resource for a horseman obsessed with learning! HorseManShip is an expansive book that you can buy separately from the Four Savvys (see below), but explains the philosophy behind them. It is like a window into the minds of Pat and Linda Parelli – their philosophy, their vision of the program, and their dedication to putting the relationship first. What is horse behaviour all about? Why do Parelli students use rope halters? What are the Seven Keys to Success? It’s all here in HorseManShip. Never before has it been so easy to find everything you need to know about the Parelli program. This is the lens through which you view the Four Savvys. HorseManShip is divided into three sections: Horse (a look at what makes a horse a horse), Man (the habits and skills we humans need to develop), and Ship (where the horse and human come together as partners in a relationship). Whether you are new to the program or you’re an experienced Parelli student who wants to learn more about the theory behind the program, HorseManShip is an excellent addition to your Parelli library.

The Four Savvys from Parelli

Do you want leadership, guidance, problem-solving skills, the ability to look into the mirror and see a horseman staring back at you? The new Four Savvys from Parelli - offer this and much, much more. These educational DVDs spotlight the main features and qualities from the past 30 years of Parelli education with practical step-bystep lessons, patterns, detailed pocket guides, horse behaviour and psychology, an emphasis on both theory and application, along with the latest and greatest developments from Pat and Linda, into one cohesive piece. The Four Savvys (On Line, Liberty, FreeStyle and Finesse) take the best aspects of Parelli education over the years, update them to match Pat and Linda’s vision for the program, and combine with their most recent breakthroughs to create the definitive Parelli at-home educational set. This is everything you need to become a true horseman, all in one place. Pat and Linda have developed great new ways of presenting information in a clear, concise, practical way, which will make your educational experience more intuitive than ever. Plus, for the first time, you will have the chance to watch full-length student lessons with Pat, as well as troubleshooting tips from Linda. Finally, Pat and Linda have fully and seamlessly integrated their ever-growing understanding of Horsenality and horse behaviour into the Parelli pathway. This makes the Four Savvys truly unique to the horse industry: a comprehensive at-home education program with an emphasis on learning the nature of the horse. EX-RACEHORSE NEWS

W

inter can be a hard time of year for thoroughbreds as they can require a little bit more TLC than other breeds. However, Figgie keeps himself well insulated against the cold by covering himself in some extra layers – namely mud!

Figaro Flyer The diary of

Joanna Reed-Moreton Joanna manages her five-year-old ex-racehorse mare, Frosty Reception, over the winter months by keeping her in a careful routine. Joanna said: “Obviously every horse is different so above all you need to get to know your horse and find out what works well for him or her. Choose a yard that benefits the needs of your horse. Have access to good grazing, ad-lib hay when stabled and in snowy weather. Feed something that adds/ maintains condition be it nuts or beet. Stick to a routine as much as possible and have a good heavy duty winter rug and a good stable rug.”

Charlotte Forde Charlotte likes to give her ex-racehorse, Indian Spring, a variety of different work over the winter. Charlotte said: “With limited daylight try to plan your horse’s exercise regime so you don’t always do school work. I find they like a real varied workload, try and still get out maybe to winter dressage, hunting or go somewhere for a good blast! I also feed copious amounts of calm and condition and give him micronized linseed!”

Ex Racehorses WE OCCASIONALLY HAVE AVAILABLE EX RACEHORSES LOOKING FOR A NEW CAREER. Experienced, knowledgeable homes only. Suitable for ROR or any discipline. For further details contact Linda or Karen on 07856 686657 / 07856 686658 or 01622 842788.

Words by Alex Kelly

Managing the ex-racehorse over winter

Figaro Flyer’s owner, Alex Kelly, spoke to other local riders to see what tips they had on keeping an ex-racehorse in tip top condition over the winter, so that they come out on top form in the spring.

Jo Sellars Jo who has a string of ex-race horses shares her top tips for keeping them in great condition over the winter months. Jo said: “I don’t give mine a full clip any more as they get cold, they have trace clips instead. They are well rugged and worked in exercise blankets. They keep their weight well and are fed four times a day throughout the winter and sugar beet helps with this.”

Katherine Stevens Katherine told us how she keeps her ex-racer and allrounder, Chartplan, in good health over the winter months. Katherine said: “Warm Speedi Beet in feeds and lots of rugs! Dry legs whenever damp to prevent mud fever. Plus exercise sheets are a God send for warming up, before schooling.”

Samantha Fisher Samantha keeps her thoroughbred, Mist Again, in top condition and ready to compete over the winter months through a carefully managed diet. Samantha said: “For all my thoroughbreds going into winter their feed gets changed slightly. They have a scoop Saracen Super Fibre nuts, a scoop of Baileys No 4 (conditioning nuts), Hifi-Lite twice a day and I add in 150 grams of crushed linseed between feeds to help with their condition and provide ad-lib hay. This keeps the weight on, but also keeps them nicely level headed to carry on competing through the winter months.”

Local Success story This month, Caroline Brough tells us about her ex-racehorse, Queens Envoy. Racehorse’s name & age: Queens Envoy, sixyear-old. Purchased where & when: She was bought eighteen months ago from HEROS the charity dedicated to re-training and re-homing ex-racehorses. Racing history: She raced six times on the flat, originally under Kieran Fallon. Her best result was second under Kirsty Milczarek in the Goodwood Maiden Fillies Stakes. She was then sold in the sales at Ascot where she was bought by someone who wanted to take her to Libya. She went into quarantine, but was abandoned there as the new owner was never heard from again. HEROS took her from quarantine and back to their Oxfordshire base.

Both pictures show Caroline Brough and Queens Envoy

Biggest success so far: Eventing at BE90 level Goals for the future: To compete in the IN RoR/ NTF Retrained Racehorse Event Championship class at Barbury Horse Trials. Any advice for anyone wanting to retrain a racehorse: Patience! It is incredibly rewarding but I think it is important to remember that unlike other young horses, you are trying to undo a lot of work as well as starting a new education. You may have to try alternative exercises to ask the questions that you want. For example, I use a lot of pole work to improve her canter instead of just flat work. Would you do it again? Absolutely. There are a huge amount of racehorses out of work that need a new home and I truly believe that there is a suitable one out there for all potential owners. I think that it’s wonderful that organisations are recognising and rewarding retrained racehorses in all disciplines now. The relationship that I have with Queens Envoy is unique, and I am so proud of all that she has achieved in her six years, as both a racehorse and event horse. Musto’s EquiSynergy System Inspired by the Sea. Designed for the Saddle. Musto’s layering ethos is based on a simple and effective principle; in order to keep warm in the worst conditions clothing must transport body moisture away from the skin, whilst also holding dry air close to the body and keeping rain or snow out. Comprised of a base, middle and outer layer, the EquiSynergy System, part of Zara Phillips’ ZP 176 collection, works to ensure that this principle is upheld through the pairing of intelligent layering options that offer athletes complete protection from the elements without impairing freedom of movement.

ZP 176 Warm Up Jacket The waterproof, windproof and breathable ZP 176 Warm Up Jacket is engineered using a lightweight fabric with a four way stretch to provide riders with a robust, protective and weather tolerant outer in Musto’s EquiSynergy System. This ergonomically designed sports fit jacket fits easily over the ZP 176 Synergy Jacket or Gilet to form a non-restrictive profile, whilst also allowing complete freedom of movement in the saddle and protecting from extreme weather conditions. Constructed from a high wicking fabric, this multi-functional thermal layer ensures wearers are kept warm, dry and comfortable. Designed with an innovative body mapped weave to provide enhanced muscle support, this base layer also boasts anti-microbial fabric with integrated UV protection. www.musto.com LR Comment: The EquiSynergy System has been designed to be worn together, but I think if you wanted to buy the pieces separately I would start with the Synergy Jacket as an initial investment in the system. KP Equestrian Stretch Denim Breeches

Kora™ Yak Wool Base Layer kora™ has developed a unique fabric for active use called Hima-Layer™: it’s unique in that it’s made from yak wool. Extremely soft, the wool is sourced directly from nomadic communities in the Himalayas via the Qingmei Rabden and the KeGaWa Co-operative. In tests kora™ HimaLayer™ fabric is 40% warmer than merino wool weight for weight. It wicks and is 17% better at transporting water vapour through it than merino.

KP Equestrian stretch denim full seated breeches with jean style back pockets. Plus small silver logo embroidered on the rear pockets. Colours: Navy, Black Sizes: 26-34 RRP: £49.00 www.kpequestrian.com

Colour: Blue. RRP: £105.00 www.kora.net

LR Comment: The special Dorlastan in these denim breeches mean they are the perfect fit, very comfortable, durable and very hardwearing. With the smart embroidered logo on the rear pockets they are almost too smart to wear for the yard.

LR Comment: This is a new product to the LR office and I am extremely impressed. It was beautifully soft to wear, very warm and even managed to look flattering. It has washed well and definitely worth the price tag.

feature New hoofboot on the market The Easyboot Transition uses a similar sole production process to human running shoes. It takes the best attributes of the most popular hoof boots, plus new technology, producing a hoof boot that will fit many shapes and sizes of hoof, including round, slightly longer than wide, and even slightly wider than long. The Transition will cope far better with hooves that are flared, upright or asymmetric than any other hoofboot. The Transition offers a combination of shock absorption and support never seen before in a hoofboot. A selection of the different types of boots available

Putting the boot in

The sole of the Transition uses three layers of material to produce a resilient shock absorbing sole that gives support and stimulation to the hoof structures. A lightweight upper protects the hoof and pastern, while reversible, industrial strength Velcro straps at the front and back secure the boot, allowing for precise fit adjustments. At the boot’s core, a polyurethane ‘bumper’ offers pliability and resilience. The hoof stands on a supportive midsole; depressions within the outer sole structure are filled with the softer midsole material, to create an integrated cushion. Comfort pads may be used inside, for additional support in therapeutic applications, or transitioning after de-shoeing.

Key points

With barefoot hoofcare now so popular, and many UK horse owners recognising the health benefits of maintaining a horse with bare feet, lots of people are wondering about hoofboots, and when to use them.

• Sold in singles • Available in eight sizes • Ideal for pleasure riding (less than 25 miles per week) • Suitable for full turnout and short periods of poulticing for therapeutic applications • RRP from £84.99

M

any horses do not need shoes at all; even horses in hard work can be unshod. There have been great advances in hoofboots in the last few years and many horse owners prefer to use them rather than keep a horse continuously shod. The hoofboots are put on the horse for work and the hooves are left ‘bare’ for the rest of the time. Hoofboots can be excellent as a way of offering protection from wear to the hoof while the horse is ridden on certain surfaces, and also offering shock absorption to the hoof structures and limbs. But they are especially useful during the transitional process after a horse has been de-shod; some horses take longer than others to progress from wearing shoes to going ‘bare’, and benefit from wearing hoofboots at this time. However there’s no definitive answer to the question ‘Will my barefoot horse always need hoofboots?’ The ‘transition’ period from shod to barefoot depends on many factors; e.g. how long and how well the horse has been trimmed and shod, how good his diet is/was, how much exercise he has been given/allowed.

Transition boot

Stockists include www.hoofboots.co.uk or visit www.trelawneequine.co.uk to find a local retailer.

Hoofboot advice Is your horse being correctly and regularly trimmed by a farrier or trimmer who understands the trim required for a working barefoot horse? Boots are designed to fit this hoof shape, not a traditional ‘pasture’ trim for non-working horses at grass, so it is important to ensure you have at least had a ‘set up trim’ before you measure for your boots. Once you have selected a boot for your horse based on its measurements, fit the boot as per the manufacturer’s instructions. Does the hoof fill the inside of the boot nicely without bulging or ‘gapping’? Check that the fastenings are not too tight. When the boot is on the hoof, you shouldn’t be able to twist it sideways by any more Transition boot with action-bottom than around five degrees. December 2013/January 2014 Localrider 45

FEATURE

Joint Disease

Words by Ed Lyall BVetMed CertEM (StudMed) MRCVS of the Arundel Equine Hospital

Experienced riders and those who are in tune with their horses may pick up on the subtle signs that something isn’t quite right before the horse starts showing obvious signs of lamness. But for others shortening of stride, heat in the legs or obvious swellings may be the first indication that the horse is suffering from joint pain. These days vets have a variety of machines, many of which are portable, which they can use to identify changes in joints, which may be affecting the horse’s performance. Here BVetMed CertEM (StudMed) MRCVS of the Arundel Equine Hospital explains more.

J

oint pain can be mild to severe, even mild joint pain that is unnoticeable in terms of lameness to the rider can be performance limiting. a sore joint may stop a show jumper landing on the correct lead after the fence or it may cause the horse to roll unnecessary poles of higher fences. a dressage horse may show asymmetry of limb action during complex dressage movements. Polo ponies may find it difficult to stop and turn sharply and race horses with joint pain may be slower than their expected potential. Joint pain is as a result of joint inflammation, left untreated some inflamed joints will settle down with rest. Some chronically inflamed joints go on to become osteoarthritic. early identification of joint inflammation and appropriate treatment can reduce the chances of chronic joint pain and therefore poor performance and lameness issues.

Fetlock being radiographed

Identifying the problem

Often riders will call and say they think there is a problem with a horse. The first thing is to ask the rider to describe the problems they think they are having, then palpate the horse’s limbs for obvious filling of the joints, in most cases an inflamed joint will have an effusion, which is where the inflamed lining of the joint produces an excess amount of fluid. Some effused joints can be identified by visual inspection as the joint bulges. In some instances, particularly with the fetlock joint, it is possible to feel a palpable thickening of the joint capsule. Some joints will feel warm to the touch. The next step is to trot the horse up on a firm flat surface and see how it moves. One of the advantages of regular checks is the vet gets to know what is normal for the horse and is then able to spot subtle gait changes. Flexion tests are a valuable way of identifying a problem with a joint, most inflamed joints will result in lameness after flexion test. The horse will then be evaluated under saddle, on the lunge in a school and on a hard surface. The rider will be asked to demonstrate the problems they are having, this may be during complex dressage movements or jumping obstacles. Often it is possible to identify a specific joint causing the problem by clinical examination, but a lot of the time it is necessary to anaesthetise or block sequentially joints on the limb in question. Once a joint is blocked the horse is put back in the situation that demonstrated the lameness the best i.e. on the lunge on the hard or flexion test. Often there is little for the vet to visually see and the response to blocking must be assessed by the rider. Once a joint has been identified as a problem the next step is to investigate that joint further to see if there is a major bone problem or whether it is a simple synovitis from a joint sprain. radiographs Lameness exam trot on hard circle

obtained of the joint can be very helpful. Often now a set of radiographs is obtained when a horse starts out on its sport career, these act as useful reference images if there are problems in the future. The images may show problems in a joint that would direct us to investigate the joint further. This can be done by performing a bone scan to look at bone turn over associated with margins of the joint, this may help identifying cracks or stress fractures in the bones adjacent to and thus involving the joint. bone scans are very useful in young racehorses as they seem to be more prone to stress fracture. bone scans can also be helpful in older horses to investigate problems such as with the hock joints.

Problems lower down

Swollen fetlock mrI is an important way of investigating joints particularly in the distal limb and hoof regions. a joint horse that goes sound by blocking the coffin joint may actually have a problem with one or more of the complex ligamentous or tendinous structures, such as the collateral ligaments or the insertion of the deep digital flexor tendon. by correctly identifying the problem correct therapy and management can be instituted. Some joints will be investigated surgically using a procedure called arthroscopy. a camera is placed through a key hole incision into the joint and the articular cartilage within the joint as well as the synovial lining of the joint and any visible ligaments can be assessed. The advantage of this investigative procedure is that any cartilage problems identified can be surgically curetted at the time. Few sport horse joints would need surgery, however in an older horse that is having continued problems with a specific joint, it would be better to operate sooner rather Bone scan of a fetlock than later.

Ultrasound can be used to assess the articular cartilage within some joints and also the ligaments around joints. Most of the time when there is a problem with a joint a simple block to confirm which joint and a few x-rays will suffice.

Treatment Plan

BEVA accredited practice for AI- chilled and frozed semen

Once the problem joint has been identified the next step is to formulate a treatment plan. The first option is usually to medicate the joint with corticosteroids in combination with hyaluronic acid. There is often bad press given to the use of corticosteroids in horses, however at the doses that are regarded as protective to the cartilage in the joint there should be little risk of the much talked about side effect of laminitis. Inappropriate use of corticosteroids in terms of dose rate and injecting too many joints at one time may result in problems, however using corticosteroids would be regarded as routine as they break the cycle of inflammation within the joint which will actually benefit the cartilage. Corticosteroids cannot be used near the time of competition or the horse would come up positive on a dope test, as such we obey a withdrawl period which depends on which drug is used. This means that horses that have repeated problems with joints and need medication to help have to have a treatment plan worked out based on their competition schedule. There are constant advances in the management of inflamed joints, the new therapies include what are called biological or regenerative therapies. The first of these is known as IRAP or autologous conditioned serum, a blood sample is taken from the horse and incubated in a lab for 24 hours before processing it for injection into an inflamed joint of the horse from which it was collected. There are a couple of advantages to this therapy, firstly no drugs are used so there are no controls on competition and secondly one sample can yield several doses of IRAP that can be stored frozen for up to six months. The second biological therapy is PRP or platelet rich plasma, again blood is harvested from the patient but this time can be processed at the time and injected into the affected joint. Platelets are rich in growth factor responsible for tissue repair. A third biological therapy is the use of stem cells injected into the joint. There are several other therapies that are not specific to a particular joint, rather they are given systemically into the muscle or vein. These include hyaluronic acid, cartrophen and adequan, as well as the product now known as Equidronate, previously Tildren. All these products have their place in the treatment of inflamed joints.

Arthroscopic surgery

Fetlock joint arthroscopy As mentioned earlier arthroscopic surgery as an option for chronically diseased joints and this is often carried out outside the competition season to allow time for recovery after the surgery. Shockwave can be a very valuable tool for treating some joints such as the flat weight bearing joints of the hocks where chronic inflammation is called spavin. It is unclear totally how shockwave works, however it has a desentising effect as well as stimulating blood flow and activating growth factors responsible for tissue repair, by sending acoustic shockwaves through the tissues. Shockwave can also be a useful treatment for ligamentous problems around the joints.

Talking to the farrier

When evaluating a horse with a joint problem an assessment of the foot balance should also be made and any findings discussed with the yard farrier. Often altering the shoeing will alleviate pain from within a joint, this is often the case with the hind feet and hock pain. It is also worth involving a physiotherapist in the treatment plan, as horses with chronic joint pain will have upper limb and back stiffness issues. The use of glucosamine based food supplements is a useful adjunct to the management of all sport horses regardless of whether they have joint problems or not. The key to managing competition horse in terms of performance is not to wait until the horse is showing lameness, but to identify subtle problems that can be affecting performance.

Surviving

Winter

Spoilt by a few years of mild, dry winters the last three have been long, cold, wet and rather miserable and the chances are this winter is set to be the same. Hopefully experience has taught horse owners to be better prepared, but for those of you who need a few pointers we hope you will enjoy reading the following hints and tips and they will help make surviving winter that much easier.

D

epending on where and how you keep your horse, your opportunities to survive winter as stress frees as possible will vary. If you keep your horse at home and have the ability to store hay, bedding and a month’s stock of hard feed at any one time, then you will be fairly well prepared. A month’s supply might seem rather a lot, but as bad weather arrives, it is natural for horse owners to stock up on feed and if the delivery lorries can’t make their normal trips, it could be a couple of weeks before your favourite brand of feed is back in stock. If you keep your horse at a livery yard, then you might have limited amounts of storage and you will have to juggle how much hay and bedding you can store. However, it might be possible to come to an arrangement with another livery that in emergency you will share supplies with each other.

Even in the coldest weather horses need access to fresh water. If your water trough freezes like this, smash the ice and using rubber gloves remove the thick ice to prevent it from freezing even more thickly the next night.

At the yard

Thinking ahead as the cold weather approaches will make life easier. • Keep plenty of road salt to scatter on icy paths and outside the stables • If it snows clear the snow with a shovel and then put down salt • Use old shirts and feed bags to create an insulated pack to wrap around the taps on the yard • Just in case the taps still freeze, fill up old plastic dustbins or other containers with water, so that you have fresh water for the morning • Always leave the kettle full, so that you can have a warm cup of tea • Make sure there are plenty of supplies at the yard as working in the cold can make you feel hungry. Lots of biscuits and cupa-soups.

Keeping warm

The only thing worse than feeling the cold is being wet and feeling the cold. Over winter it is a good idea to keep as many spare clothes as you can in your car or at the yard. At the very least keep a couple of extra pairs of gloves and an extra jacket with you. Layering is the best way to keep warm and it is worth investing in a good pair of thermals and extra warm socks. A large percentage of heat is lost from the head,

so remember your hat and based on the weather over last few years, waterproof trousers are a must.

In your car

Don’t be fooled into thinking just because you drive a 4x4 you can go anywhere in any weather conditions. You might well be able to, but if the weather changes and those in less suited cars can cause roads to become closed, leaving you with a long wait or the possibility of having to abandon your car. These days most people have a mobile phone and whilst this will alert your friends and family to where you are, it is important to have everything you need to keep warm, or at least to trek home. If you are expecting snow, pack a shovel. Keep a bag with extra clothes, gloves, hat, wellies or walking boots and a thick warm jacket. Include as much fluorescent clothing as you can, plus a torch and a couple of travel rugs. In another bag keep a bottle of water (try to keep warm so it doesn’t freeze) and some biscuits and chocolate.

For your horse

The most important thing to help keep your horse looking and feeling great this winter is a good supply of hay (or fibred based feed). This helps warm your horse from the inside. Some of you will have field kept horses, who survive the toughest of winters

56 Localrider DECEMBER 2013/JANUARY 2014

without wearing a rug, and as long as your horse is allowed to grow a suitable coat, he will generally adapt. Most however, will probably be stable kept, going out in the field during daylight hours. The majority will also be clipped. The second most important item your horse needs is a rug to keep him warm. These days rugs are made from technical, breathable fabrics, which are light to wear and quick to dry. Most also have an ability to semi-adapt to the temperature, keeping your horse warm on even the coldest days. If your horse is feeling the cold, he will start to lose condition. Keep an eye on his temperature when you have the chance by feeling his ears and placing your hand inside his rug. If he feels lovely and warm, then he probably is. But do apply common sense and if he feels hot, change his rug. It is quite common these days for owners to keep their horse’s turnout rug on in the stable. Firstly this means the horse doesn’t have to be changed into a potentially cold stable rug and secondly if the rug is wet, it should dry much more quickly on the horse. It is always good to have a few spare rugs of different weights in case your horse damages his or it gets wet right through. It isn’t necessary to have two heavyweight rugs if you can perhaps combine a lightweight rug with a medium weight one. It is also good to have a clean lightweight rug to use on really cold days underneath his heavyweight. It is possible to use a fleece or a cooler and whilst very effective at keeping your horse warm, they do tend to become wet and dirty if your horse rolls or it rains.

By planning ahead and being organised it is possible to work around the snow, even with a large number of horses to feed.

Some horses, particularly older horses, however well rugged, feel the cold at night. For these equines it is worth having a set of wraps or bandages. There are lots of different ones available and if the horse is older it might be worth considering a pair with magnets or silver lining, both of which are supposed to have beneficial properties for stiffer joints.

Have fun this winter

Looking after horses in bad weather is hard work, but if you are prepared and organised there will still be time to have fun with your friends at the yard. Why not run a competition for the best decorated stable, organise a yard Christmas hack, or combine the ride with some Carol singing, hopefully raising money for your favourite charity too. If it does snow, look on the positive side, you can go sledging with your friends. All you need is a few plastic feed sacks and a hill, the steeper the better. And remember if you feel cold or the weather gets you down a hot chocolate and a gossip in the tack room, can go a long way to making you feel normal again.

Coping with Mud Fever and other skin problems As the ground becomes wetter either from rain or melted snow, it becomes softer and ultimately, more muddy. The wet, cold and mud often causes the horse’s skin to soften and become infected with bacteria, a condition more commonly known as mud fever. Here we look at some of the products which might limit your horse’s suffering this winter.

Equine America Fungatrol Shampoo

NAF Mud Gard

Equine America Fungatrol Shampoo protects the skin from bacteria. Washing with water and soap or water alone can strip the skin of its natural protective oils. Fungatrol Shampoo can be used to wash the whole horse or individual areas, protecting the skin from bacteria and fungus. This powerful lathering shampoo is a great start to the Fungatrol programme. For best results, leave on for 20 minutes before rinsing. www.equine-america.co.uk

This advanced formula, rich in antioxidants, works from within offering a nutritional approach in helping to address seasonal mud reactions. Key ingredients of this formula include MSM and Zinc which are important for skin health and integrity, combined with a natural antioxidant complex, which helps to mop up harmful excess toxins from within the system - these proliferate as a result of the damaging reaction to the bacteria in the mud. NAF approaches the battle from the inside and out. Attack from the inside by feeding Mud Gard, and defend and protect externally using Love the Skin He’s In Wash.

Equine America Fungatrol Cream

Equine America Fungatrol Cream conditions and protects the skin. After the legs have been washed with Fungatrol Shampoo and any scabs have been removed, dry the legs thoroughly. Then massage the Fungatrol Cream over the infected area to create a waterproof barrier, which will also condition and protect the skin from bacteria and fungus. www.equine-america.co.uk www.equine-america.co.u

NAF Love the SKIN He’s In The ‘Love the SKIN he’s in’ products are all totally natural and have been formulated to complement each other in their actions, and work from the inside and out, addressing the increasing number of skin problems that affect our horses, including lumps, bumps, rashes and irritations, ‘Love the SKIN he’s in’ Skin Wash is a totally natural, effective wash that offers gentle, yet effective cleansing to damaged and/or challenged skin. Complemented by a range of other ‘Love the SKIN he’s in’ products. www.naf-equine.eu/uk

Put to the test...

For this issue we have been testing products which will hopefully make surviving winter that much easier and enjoyable. Equilibrium Therapy® Massage Mitt

Bossy’s Rugs

A quick, effective and easy to use Massage Mitt which helps to promote relaxation, improve flexibility and improve muscle condition. Tension is one of the most common reasons for poor performance in all disciplines, and massage helps by increasing relaxation and improving flexibility. Massage helps to reduce stiffness caused by chronic injury, chronic conditions or strenuous work by improving the blood supply to the muscles. It also promotes relaxation by reducing heart rate throughout the massage. Massage can be highly beneficial to horses and ponies as it can: . improve flexibility and mobility . enhance muscle tone and reduce muscle wastage . prevent injury by warming up muscles before work . promote mental and physical relaxation The Massage Mitt enables you to massage those difficult to get to muscle groups in the neck, quarters and hamstrings.

Bossy’s Rugs incorporates the top selling Bossy’s bib with an extension in the same fabric, which covers the whole of the horse’s body. It forms a protective layer between the rug and the hair, preventing rubs and leaving a shiny coat. It also prevents the build-up of grease in your rugs. RRP from £45.00 www.bossysbibs.com LR Comment: A simple yet brilliant idea. Not only does this under rug prevent rubbing, it also acts as a liner, thereby reducing the cost of rug washing!

RRP: £95 www.equilibriumproducts.com

Liverpool Wood Pellets

LR Comment: I found the mitt a great bonding tool as my horse loved it and would turn her head to indicate where she would like it to be used. More importantly I used it on her hamstrings, which I know have been tight this year. I noticed a definite improvement in her way of going and temperament after use.

For a 12 x 12 stable with rubber matting you will need 3 - 4 bags of pellets. Empty the bags and then level out with a shavings fork. A fork with narrow tines works better here. Sprinkle the pellets with approximately 3 to 3.5 litres of water per bag. Use a watering can with a rose attachment to ensure an even spread of water. As the bedding is so absorbent, it takes moisture from the droppings, so when you muck out take care to pick up just the droppings pile, avoiding taking too much bedding with it. www.liverpoolwoodpellets.co.uk I

LR Comment: These pellets are lovely and clean. They made a great bed and the method of laying the bed is quick and simple and they are far less dusty than other types of bedding.

Working out for winter fitness With dark evenings and short days, lungeing is a good means of keeping the horse ‘ticking over’ between weekends. Ten minutes on each rein will burn a few calories, but by using an aid such the EquiAmi lunge aid, you can make the time more beneficial for your horse. You can be more constructive and, in that same twenty minutes, give your horse a workout that makes him use his back, promotes engagement and wither-lift and develops balance and swing. The EquiAmi lunge aid will simply and effectively bring about this way of going and bring improvements over the winter months. Dr Hilary Bentley of EquiAmi says that people are really surprised just how well their horses will work and how quickly great results are seen when using this great aid that saves time, saves effort and makes life so much easier. www.equiami.com

Keep your horse looking & feeling good this winter The most important question to consider is whether your horse is warm enough. Other than for the hardiest of ponies this will involve wearing a rug, but more importantly eating fibre. Just like the wonderful breakfast adverts on television the fibre (grass, hay, haylage, fibre feed) produce energy, which keeps the horse warm from the inside. Depending on what you do with your horse, his age and other conditions, such as arthritis or sensitivity in the respiratory tract he may need additional feed and supplements and here we look at some of those that may help your horse look and feel good this winter.

HaySoft Timothy Great taste...fewer calories! Lower in calories, but with the same great taste, HaySoft Timothy will make sure your horse doesn’t bust out of the weigh tape. HaySoft Timothy is made from the very best timothy grass to produce a tasty, lower calorie haylage and is the latest product to be added to HaySoft’s range of premium haylages and chaffs. High in fibre, calcium (with a favourable calcium-tophosphorus ratio) and vitamins A and D, HaySoft Timothy is extremely palatable and easy to digest. HaySoft Timothy is ideal for horses and ponies who struggle with being overweight, good-doers and those prone to laminitis, plus due to its low protein levels, HaySoft Timothy is also perfect for horses that are protein sensitive. With vets and equine nutritionists stating that horses require a minimum of 40% forage in their diet, HaySoft Timothy is an ideal replacement for hay. Not only is it closer in matter to the horses natural diet of grass but it also adds a higher amount of fibre to the horse’s diet to help maintain a healthy digestive system. HaySoft Timothy has a low moisture content making it less susceptible to mould and is tightly packaged in three easy to manage sections. The haylage undergoes HaySoft’s dust extraction process ensuring it is dust free preventing horses and owners being exposed to potentially harmful dust and mould spores. www.haysoft.co.uk

Rowen Barbary ReadyMash Extra For horses that tend to drop weight over the winter months ReadyMash Extra is an ideal feed to incorporate into the diet, supplying high fibre levels alongside essential oils and milk powders it helps to encourage the necessary condition whilst supplying an excellent source of slow release energy. Ensuring the fibre levels are maintained is crucial not only for maintaining a healthy hindgut, but also to help to maintain body temperature. Designed to be fed soaked as a soft textured mash ReadyMash Extra is also extremely palatable for horses that chew and digest less efficiently, by feeding a mash this also helps to maintain ample water intake. Glucose powders are also included to aid reduced recovery time after a hard day’s work and to promote appetite in fussy feeders along with an advanced vitamin and mineral supplement. This helps provide your horse with all the essential nutrients needed for a fully balanced diet. www.rowenbarbary.co.uk

Saracen Show Improver Mix and Pencils Prepare your horse to stay in top condition this winter with ‘super fibres’. For horses needing more than hay this winter the Saracen Show Improver Mix and Pencils are highly nutritious, energy dense rations containing a high level of calories provided by Saracen’s unique ‘Superfibres’ and oils. This blended with EQUI-JEWEL®, a high fat stabilised rice bran, helps ensure that the digestive system is not over burdened with starch and delivers a high calorie ration in a slow release form. www.saracenhorsefeeds.com

NAF Five Star Optimum Feed Balancer

Baileys Top Line Conditioning Mix and Cubes

NAF Five Star Optimum Feed Balancer will restore and maintain five star condition, topline and health, maximise the nutritional value of the daily feed ration, and optimise the health and efficiency of the digestive system. Concentrated and easy to feed, Optimum comes in a highly palatable pellet form. It is of the highest supplement specification and has a great sugar free flavour. Optimum is formulated to complement either a high fibre low concentrate or performance diet. When a daily feed is not necessary, the great news is that OPTIMUM can be simply given on its own, direct from your hand.

A horse in good condition often stands out from the crowd, displaying a muscular rounded top line and head-turning shine to the coat; generally a good indication that his diet is supplying all that he needs. Baileys suggest good-doers could be fed Baileys Lo-Cal or Performance Balancer plus forage, often with few added extras through the winter months. Those with higher calorie requirements need monitoring as the temperature drops, when a step up to a highly digestible conditioning feed will help avoid winter weight loss. For maintaining condition or promoting weight gain, top line and outstanding muscle tone, use Baileys Top Line Conditioning Mix and Cubes. The care taken in micronising the cereals ensures the starch content is as digestible as possible helping reduce any associated risks. Quality protein sources supply a range of essential amino acids for muscle tone and tissue integrity and both feeds are fully balanced with performance levels of vitamins and minerals to support metabolism and well-being. Neither need to be fed by the bucket-full to get results so are often more cost effective than cheaper alternatives.

SUPPLEMENT YOUR HORSE’S DIET THIS WINTER Litovet winter joint support

NAF Magic Calmer

Winter is here, and for some horses, the cold weather and reduced activity will result in stiff joints and/or fluid accumulation in the legs. It is possible to help manage joint problems by keeping horses mobile (exercise/turnout) and also by feeding an effective nutritional support. LitoVet® was trialled in performance horses before being brought to market. The published independent double-blind placebo controlled trial, was undertaken on horses in active trotting training as they often develop early osteoarthritis as a result of their intensive programme. All horses were based at the same yard and put on a standardised training regime. Tests during and following the trial showed that the horses’ natural repair processes were more active in those being fed LitoVet® than those on the placebo. Those on LitoVet® also recorded significantly higher levels of vitamin C than the placebo group. Of the trainers, over 70% said horses appeared more lithe, supple and easier to work the day after strenuous exercise. The patented process used in the production of LitoVet® ensures that the unique natural qualities, such as the high level of the GOPO® (glycoside of mono and diglycerol) and vitamin C are not depleted, thereby delivering support to the horse’s natural recovery processes helping to maintain soundness. LitoVet® is 100% plant-based and vegetarian.

NAF said: “Riders from all around the country continually report back to us about how Magic has changed their horse’s behaviour and performance, and how they are now able to fully enjoy their horses… they are our proof that Magic delivers a cool, calm and concentrated horse.” The good news is the unique Magic formula has been further improved and now contains pre and probiotics for a relaxed and settled gut. The Magic formula of bio available magnesium blended with carefully selected calming herbs now also contains a combination of prebiotics and live probiotic yeasts, which work together to support a healthy environment within the gut, keeping it settled and calm. A calm gut leads to a calm horse. Improve the daily diet of horses prone to anxiety, nervousness, excitability and stress reactions, by feeding, new, improved Magic. www.naf-equine.eu/uk

Lifeforce Focus

Lifeforce Focus is a supplement for leisure horses and those with a lot of grazing time. It creates an ideal digestive environment, allowing good bacteria to work effectively throughout the gut, helping prevent digestive upsets. addresses challenges relating to weight loss and body condition and provides organic trace minerals that are more easily absorbed and maintained.

The winter months bring damp and cold weather which can induce longer stable time and reduced opportunities to maintain regular exercise – and unfortunately none of these factors are beneficial to the horse suffering from joint discomfort or stiffness. before winter sets in, now is the time to give your horse’s joints a helping hand. Feeding a high grade performance nutraceutical such as Vetroflex can assist in several ways. The unique combination of natural ingredients in Vetroflex offers welcome relief for sore and stiff joints on a short-term basis, as well as rejuvenating the cartilage to help strengthen repair existing problems. by supplying specially optimised collagen peptides and amino acids to the cartilage the chance of future problems developing in the joint are significantly reduced – meaning that Vetroflex is not only suitable for horses already suffering from joint discomfort – but also for pro-active owners looking for a preventative method to future proof their horse’s soundness and mobility. natural, side effect free, gentle on the stomach and free from banned substances, animalife are so confident in the results of Vetroflex they offer a money back guarantee subject to terms and conditions.

Previously known as Top Form, it has had a revamp to provide even greater value, whilst still maintaining top product performance. everyday Vitamins & minerals is a complete supplement for all horses, containing top quality vitamins, minerals, pro-biotics and trace elements. everyday Vitamins & minerals is an easy to feed palatable pellet, which is ideal for both stable and field kept horses. www.equine-america.co.uk

Nettex Arthri-Flex Used on a regular basis, Arthri-Flex will prevent the onset of joint and muscle wear and tear and prevents concussion during heavy work. It delivers results quickly and provides the essential building blocks that maintain and assist in joint regeneration, muscle recovery and comfort. Nettex Arthri-Flex contains a comprehensive blend of active ingredients: Glucosamine, Chondroitin and MSM to help build and improve joint components. Manganese, Copper and Zinc to help produce the collagen that’s vital for joint lubrication. A fast-working Natural anti-inflammatory compound and Meadow Sweet to help reduce inflammation and aid pain relief. And Hyaluronic Acid (HA) to build synovial fluid and therefore provide joint protection. www.nettexequine.com

Nettex All Purpose Vits & Mins Have the peace of mind that you are feeding all the vitamins and minerals that your horse needs by adding nettex all Purpose Vits & mins to the daily diet. nettex all Purpose Vits & mins is a general purpose supplement that promotes overall health and vitality. It’s particularly good for horses or ponies that are on reduced hard feed rations, older equines that need extra support, and competition horses that need to perform at their best, although any horse or pony will benefit from this balanced supplement.

OTHER FEED NEWS Mollichaff Veteran for Your Golden Oldie Mollichaff Veteran from HorseHage is a high fibre forage mix that has been specially formulated for older horses and ponies and those that are unable to consume long forage and require a partial forage replacer. Many elderly equines have loose or missing teeth and cannot chew long stemmed forage such as hay or haylage. Mollichaff Veteran is made from chopped ingredients so it is easy to manage and is very palatable too, making it great for fussy feeders. It is made from a balanced blend of dried grass, dried alfalfa and high quality oat straw and is topped with a unique dressing combining linseed and soya oil with a small amount of low sugar molasses and added vitamins and minerals, plant-based antioxidants, biotin, mint, nettle and salt. These added ingredients have all been carefully chosen to benefit the equine veteran. Linseed oil is a rich source of amino acids and essential fatty acids including Omega 3 which can help in the nutritional maintenance of arthritis and inflammatory skin conditions and also help optimise the immune system. Antioxidants from a plant-based source are included to help combat free radicals and maintain your horse in good health. Nettles are naturally high in vitamins and minerals and therefore make this herb ideal for use in feeds to help in the nutritional support of the circulatory system, rheumatism and arthritis, which many older horses can suffer from. Mint contains flavonoids that act to relax the digestive tract and most horses also find the aroma and taste of mint to be particularly appealing; and salt provides two important electrolytes – sodium and chloride. Mollichaff Veteran also contains added limestone to provide additional calcium and biotin for healthy hoof growth. Containing only natural ingredients, Mollichaff Veteran can be fed alone, or as part of the forage ration. www.horsehage.co.uk

Blue Chip Horse Feeds Horses have evolved to eat a mainly fibre diet, however a diet solely of grass is not always possible in winter and is often lacking in essential vitamins, minerals and nutrients, this is why the diet needs to be supplemented with hay or haylage. Grass also contains natural antioxidants which will be depleted in winter. Feeding a high quality feed balancer such as one from the blue chip range will ensure that your horse or pony is getting a nutritionally balanced diet, and because all the blue chip balancers are nutrient dense they are fed in small quantities. blue chip balancers are whole-cereal and molasses free and include a fruit derived form of vitamin e, which is a powerful natural antioxidant. Horses can use up to 80% of their feed energy keeping warm; fibre is the most ‘warming’ feed, as more heat is produced during digestion of fibre than any other nutrient. all of the blue chip balancers contain a probiotic yeast which can double the digestibility of fibre in the diet, meaning that they will get twice as much ‘warming energy’ out of their hay or haylage. Stabled horses need a well ventilated stable to help prevent dust allergies and spores irritating the airways. all the blue chip balancers contain a comprehensive respiratory supplement that includes garlic, menthol and eucalyptus, to promote lung health and integrity. also included in the balancers are a hoof supplement and a purified form of nucleotides, which are the building blocks of Dna and rna and aid nutrient absorption, injury recovery and improve the horse’s immune system. www.bluechipfeed.com
