Welcome 39 50

L

ooking through this issue I feel so proud that we have so many successful combinations in the South East, many of whom I have had the opportunity to follow closely over the last ten years, as they have strived to reach the ultimate goal of riding for their country. Highlights include Daniel Watson riding alongside Carl Hester, Charlotte Dujardin and Gareth Hughes in Rotterdam (see page 33). Gemma Tattersall, Emily Llewellyn, Izzy Taylor and Francis Whittington winning the Houghton Hall leg of the FEI Eventing Nations Cup (see page56). Also on page 56, Genevieve Clarke and Will Furlong have been long-listed for the Junior European Championships. With selection only a matter of weeks away I would like to wish all of our local riders the best of luck and hope to see you competing in Europe later this year. International show jumping came to London in June for the Longines Global Champions Tour of London.. This really was a wonderful weekend of competition and an opportunity to see some of the world’s best horses and riders all jumping at the same time in the same place. Having been on several tours of the Billy Stud, I was thrilled to be able to watch William Funnell and Billy Congo, jump three clear rounds, finishing just off the podium in fourth place. Talking of shows, the team will be heading to Hickstead for the Longines Royal International Horse Show from 31st July. Our stand (No 42) is in a slightly different position this year, just behind the Derby Bank. We love to meet you and hear what you have been up to with your horse or pony, so do call in and say hello. Plus if you come on Thursday 1st or Friday 2nd August there are free entry tickets for two people on page 79. We are currently organising some super competitions, so hopefully you may be lucky and win a prize too. I have had some fantastic trips out with my camera this month and whilst sadly I can’t make it to every show, this month I have been to the Heathfield Show (page 16) and Hadlow College Annual Show (page 71). I really enjoyed chatting with the riders we featured and hearing their stories, what they have done so far and what they are aiming for next. Just like our cover stars this month, Tina Baseley and C Alba R11, Champion Riding Horse at the Heathfield Show, they now head to the Royal International. I know lots of you will be competing there and we wish you all the very best of luck!

NEWS WIN! Royal County of Berkshire Show

T

WIN!

his year’s Royal County of Berkshire Show (21st – 22nd September) provides some serious equestrian competition and a worthy finale to Britain’s outdoor show jumping season. Top of the bill in the Main Arena this year is the ‘International Stairway Final’ – now in its fifth year. up to 30 competitors are set to battle it out, with a total of £7,500 prize money at stake. The series was created as part of an initiative by British Show jumping to identify and assess both potential and existing British team competitors, and international riders and horses. Riders will compete at major county shows throughout the summer to clock up league points before heading to Berkshire. Also drawing the crowds in the Main Arena will be the Area Trial, sponsored by Rivar, which combines skill with speed. From Heavy Horses through to Scurry Driving and Royal International Horse Show and Olympia qualifiers, the show also celebrates the diversity of the equine population with a range of showing classes from Shetlands and Highlands, Mountain & Moorlands through to Cleveland Bays and Friesians. The extremely popular ‘Retrained Racehorses’ classes continue to draw competitors and crowds with the showground’s close proximity to lambourn – a village famous for its association with the training of the world’s finest racehorses. And, as if the thrill of the equestrian arenas weren’t enough, this year’s star attractions include an RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight featuring an amazing trio of Spitfire, Hurricane and lancaster on the Sunday. Each of the planes played a part in achieving ultimate victory in World War 2 and will revive memories for some locals of the day 70 years ago when Newbury and Reading were bombed by two German planes. On Saturday, there is another helping of aerial excitement, when the RAF Falcons Parachute Display Team performs its uniquely colourful and courageous freefall display into the main ring. Add to the mix, 600 shopping stands, sheep shearing, entertainment and music, including a dedicated sports zone with BMX and skateboarding display and coaching and you have a show that will thrill all the family! One reader will win a pair of tickets and a Newbury & District Agricultural Society Membership. To enter please use the entry form on page 59. www.berkshireshow.co.uk

Horseware National Hunter Trial Series Final Horseware and Eland Lodge Equestrian have created the Horseware National Hunter Trials Series to fill a gap in the equestrian calendar. Riders who compete in affiliated and unaffiliated dressage and show-jumping enjoy the challenge of reaching both regional and national championships and until now there was nothing similar for riders who enjoy cross country riding without doing dressage and show jumping. Riding centres and clubs throughout the country have been invited to hold qualifiers for the inaugural National Final which will be held at Eland Lodge on Sunday 6th October. Riders don’t need to be a member of any organisation and event organisers don’t have to pay any fees. There are qualifiers are for 70cm, 80cm, 90cm, 1m and 80cm pairs. The first three riders with no jumping penalties in each class will qualify for the prestigious final. There are currently 28 hunter trials holding qualifiers and any event that would like to take part can email sue@elandlodge.com. For a full list of qualifying venues see www.elandlodge.com

Binky Felstead at charity fashion show The uK’s leading horse charity World Jane Felstead and Binky Felstead with John Blake, Horse Welfare was Head of Fundraising at World Horse Welfare the beneficiary of a glamorous evening of Royal Ascot fashion hosted by the wellknown racing pub in Chelsea, The Sydney Arms. Channel Four horseracing presenter, Emma Spencer, introduced the event, which included a short film about the charity’s work rescuing abused and neglected horses in the uK. Star of hit show on E4, Made in Chelsea’s Binky Felstead joined the horse charity early on in the evening with her mother, jane Felstead, who is new to the show. jane and Binky spoke about their love for horses and how Binky had always ridden as a child. “Our family has grown up around horses,” says jane. “As soon as Binky heard that this event was to raise money for abused and neglected horses she dropped everything to get here. This is a cause that is very close to both of our hearts.” www.worldhorsewelfare.org

Skipping out made easy When removing manure from arenas, stables or paddocks, it is essential to have the right tools for the job and the Equine Speeskip makes the task quick and easy. The bucket’s enhanced holding capacity means less trips to the wheelbarrow, and the innovative rake design makes it possible to be highly selective at removing the manure, dramatically reducing the amount of bedding or arena surface removed. Also, the rake does not get tangled up in long grass and makes it easy to collect even small particles. The Equine Speeskip offers a quick and easy way to maintain arenas, stables and paddocks at an affordable cost. www.equinespeedskip.com

Keeping Up Appearances In the battle against stable stains you need every little bit of help you can get and when it comes to your choice of bedding, the more absorbent the bedding, the less mess your horse has to lay in. Verdo Horse Bedding is a clever heattreated wood pellet product, created for equine use, which absorbs three times its own weight in liquid, which not only helps maintain a dry environment, but also reduces ammonia resulting in a much more pleasant night’s sleep. When a small amount of water is added to the bag a regeneration process is activated and within approximately 20 minutes, you are ready to empty the open bags out into the stable to create a soft fluffy and dry bed ready for your equine friend. Because the pellets are manufactured from 100% virgin soft wood and heat treated to eliminate pests and bacteria, you can rest assured that your horse is sleeping on only the best and it’s good to know that it contains less than 1% dust, also making it the ideal choice for enclosed environments, such as your trailer or lorry or for immediate occupation at shows this season. Other key factors include less waste on the muck heap and beds that are easier and quicker to muck out, leaving you more time for plaiting on those show mornings. www.verdohorsebedding.co.uk

Visit the stand at Hickstead The PROtector Riding hat with its slim and modern lines and vents to help cool the head, has been an overwhelming success with many International riders wearing them, including Peter Charles, and Francis Whittington, who have commented on how secure and comfortable they are. The hat has the SNELL E2001 standard, the highest manufactured equestrian SAFETY standard in the world, and the only standard having an anvil test simulating a flying hoof or hitting a pole. It comes with an elegant black Pittard’s leather harness stitched in red and a smart padded zip up bag. And can be used for cross country too! Available in lots of colours, to match your jacket. Approved BSJA,BE, British Riding Clubs, BD, Pony Club etc. Visit the Parkgate Equestrian stand on Competitors Row at the Royal International Horse Show. www.Parkgateequestrian.co.uk

Best Friend Cribbing Muzzle The Best Friend Cribbing Muzzle provides a humane solution to cribbing and destructive behaviour such as rug, boot, bandage and wood chewing. Once fitted correctly the Best Friend Cribbing Muzzle will prevent undesirable behaviour whilst allowing your horse to eat and drink normally. The Best Friend Cribbing Muzzle attaches securely to a head collar and has a built in four-point break away system for safety. The Best Friend Cribbing Muzzle is light weight and designed with your horses comfort in mind, allowing freedom of both head and neck movements, ideal for use in the stable or field.

Grabbit, Drag it, Wash it

R

ubber matting is a convenient and comfortable bedding option for equines but while horse owners may muck out regularly, the mats are often left in situ leaving an undesirable cocktail of bacteria and ammonia to fester underneath. Such actions are largely down to the cumbersome nature of rubber matting, which is why the award winning Grabbit Mat Mover is proving so popular. Ammonia is known to be damaging to the respiratory system as well as irritating the sensitive tissue around the eyes and in the nasal passages but good hygiene is also important for biosecurity and avoiding the spread of sickness and disease. The Grabbit clamps onto rubber matting to provide a handle that enables horse owners and stable staff to move bulky rubber mats quickly and easily with reduced effort and back strain. Once outside, the mats and stable floor can be hosed down or disinfected as required to help create a healthy and pleasant environment for horses and their owners or grooms. www.wefi.co.uk

SEIB Cycle JOGLE To Celebrate 50 Years South Essex Insurance Brokers (SEIB) will celebrate their 50th anniversary with a 1000 mile charity cycle ride from John O’Groats to Lands End in aid of the children’s cancer charity, CLIC Sargent. The ride, which takes place from 12th to 21st July, will be undertaken by members of staff who will visit key customers and associates en route. The ride has a personal significance to SEIB IT Manager, Andy Davies, whose six-year-old son, Aston, was diagnosed with suspected leukaemia and spent some time at the Royal Marsden hospital undergoing tests. “Thankfully Aston is OK, but I saw so many parents and children that were not so lucky. I feel strongly about doing this ride to raise money for the CLIC Sargent charity”, he said. Every 24 hours 10 children and young people are diagnosed with cancer and CLIC Sargent is the only charity that offers all round care and support to them and their families. South Essex Insurance Brokers are established general brokers offering specialist insurance services tailored to meet the needs of specific markets. They are noted for their specialist insurance products for industries as diverse as equestrian, rural taxis and funeral directors. Barry Fehler started the South Essex Insurance Brokers company from his parent’s home 50 years ago in 1963. The company has continued to grow and expand since its inconspicuous start and is now in the top 75 brokers in the UK. The success of the company is due to an in depth knowledge of the specialist markets within which it operates and a desire to offer the best possible client experience. Over the years SEIB have won every insurance industry award for customer service and their claims service and the company is still proud to be particularly customer focused and pleased to go that extra mile whenever required. Fashion FOCUS

FEATURE

By Lucy Nicholas of The Saddlery Shop, Photos by Horseware

With the recent, welcome increase in temperature, we have been able to enjoy some much needed T-shirt weather and sunshine; but in true British weather style, there is always a risk of a shower! Therefore your wardrobe at this time of year should be all about layering – think cool shirts, breathable T-shirts, thin waterproof layers and fancy fleeces – there’s some gorgeous outdoor fashion available for the equestrian market, and some great bargains to be found, particularly online.

E

questrian ladies certainly know how to dress for changeable seasons, sporting technical fabrics, bright, bold colour schemes, hard-wearing garments and of course, waterproof, breathable and wind-proof apparel that can withstand the elements, cold or hot. These types of outfits are ideal for any modern horse owner or yummy mummy, whether you are out walking the dog, doing the school-run, meeting friends or enjoying the great outdoors with your horse.

Clothing for kids

Good quality outdoor children’s clothing is usually designed to offer warmth retention and also protect against overheating; it may also have waterproofing capabilities, as well as durability and comfort. Technical clothing may also dissipate perspiration, and offer adequate air permeability. For your children’s equestrian attire, look out for soft fabrics that won’t irritate gentle skin, and garments that have a good shape. Even little sporting enthusiasts need their clothing items to go with the body, and not restrict movement.

Colour pop

So, what colours are fashionable this season? Equestrian enthusiasts always know that blue is a perennial favourite – it is ideal for not showing the dirt, goes with almost any other colour, and is also a smart colour if you are ditching the yard and heading out for lunch, or to meet friends. Popular combinations for women this summer are pink and blue, as they give a ladylike touch without being too ‘girly’. Team these colours with chocolate brown for a soft, warm colour scheme with a pop of colour, and accessorise with chocolate brown accessories such as leather boots, belts and handbags for a smart, equestrian style. For children, almost anything goes, colour wise – reds and oranges are currently popular for both boys and girls, as they are bold and bright and good at repelling dirt! Avoid beiges and whites, particularly on the bottom half, as these colours simply don’t stand up to outdoor wear; keep your light-coloured breeches for competition days. Patterns are always popular – and this year, there are lots of checked clothes available. Checked patterns offer a stylish nod to Americana-style, and will see you through from the stables to life outside of horses. You may also see some slightly shabby-chic looks in the fashion sector this season - exposed seams and raw edges, for example - especially on little girls’ clothing. Look out for hand-stitched embellishments and folklore styles, for a quirky touch. There are many bargains to be found, including useful summer items to compliment your summer wardrobe, at The Saddlery Shop. This online retail company, www.thesaddleryshop.co.uk, stocks various leading outdoor and equestrian brands, including many items from Horseware’s 2013 range, pictured here. JULY 2013 Localrider 13

SPOTLIGHT

Grey Stud

Penddraig Serenade and her foal, Greystud Santo Savoy, pictured at the Heathfield Show, where they won both the Sport Horse Broodmare class and the Foal Sport Horse class

Jack Beeson-Smith has featured regularly in Localrider since graduating from Hadlow College and building a base for himself at Grey Stud Livery Yard in Bexhill, East Sussex.

With his latest foals catching the judge’s eye at both Heathfield and South of England, we thought it was time to catch up with him again. Jack tells the story in his own words…

“I

t’s been an exciting spring for all at Grey Stud Livery in East Sussex, with the arrival of two stunning foals in April, homebred youngsters to back, county shows to get the foals out to, oh and yes a whole heap of liveries to care for and train. Our first arrival this year was a really super colt who we have named, Santo Savoy. He is out of our striking young Tycoon mare, Penddraig Serenade, who was champion mare at her grading as a four-year-old and was very successful in young horse classes. He is by the impressive Sandro Hit stallion, Santo Hit. This Kent based stallion is one of the very few British bred stallions to have been graded and performance tested in Germany at the Oldenburg Licensing. We chose him for his international bloodlines, impressive movement and conformation, long limbs, fantastic temperament and trainability. He has certainly not disappointed and both dam and sire have put their stamp on

Pic by Spidge Photography

Jack has never faltered in his determination to succeed as an all-round horseman. A passion for dressage and breeding, led him to the privileged position early in his career of working for Jennie Loriston-Clarke at the Catherston Stud and it is with Jennie’s attention to detail that Jack has developed the Grey Stud and his own breeding programme.

Santo Hit is a Homozygous black Oldenburg stallion standing in Kent. He combines competing, with stud duties and has proved to be a super producer of dressage foals with superb type, movement and conformation. Santo Hit also consistently passes on his fantastic temperament and relaxed friendly character to his off-spring.

Left: Grey Stud Jasper, loves showing off his super trot Below: The gang

Santo Hit

Santo Hit qualified for the British Dressage National Championships as a five-year-old and has since gone on to score 74% plus and this year has qualified for the Regional Championships in only a few outings and recently the Hickstead Masters Championships. this wonderful colt. With his angular shoulders, very long legs and lovely paces it is looking like this little one might just have a serious future ahead of him in the dressage arena.

Savoy loves to be serenaded Both dam and foal won their Sports Horse Breeding classes at Heathfield Show and then went on to win the same classes at the prestigious South of England Show. Now every time we lead the little one past the lorry when the ramp is down he makes a B line for his show transport. We think he’s getting a bit fond of red ribbons. Savoy has a few more parties to go to this season. He is booked into Kent County Show, The BEF Futurity Evaluations and the pair will be presented to the Oldenburg

judges on their UK tour. We have been so pleased with this foal that Serenade is already back in foal to Santo Hit and we can’t recommend highly enough Jamie and Jess at Euro Spots Horse (owners of Santo Hit) for such a personal touch to the service they offer. They have collected at the drop of a hat and at the weekend when we have only realised at the last minute that the mare was ready for insemination. When analysing the semen on arrival to us it has always been of superb quality with very good motility.

Jasper shows off Our other new addition, born a week later than Savoy, is Greystud Jasper. This colt is out of our mare, Precious Gem II, who has proven herself as the ideal sports

horse in the dressage, jumping and showing arenas. His sire is the well known coloured warmblood stallion, Sempers Spirit, who is Homozygous, which means we were guaranteed a coloured foal. Jasper is beautifully marked with a perfect heart on his side and has the most attractive front end, along with a super ‘show off’ trot. We are really going to enjoy working with Jasper and Savoy this summer, but we can’t get too attached as they are now both for sale and will go after they are weaned in September. Every year brings new experiences to Grey Stud and that’s what keeps us fresh. All our liveries are enjoying having the babies around. Now the foals have arrived, they have to add at least another half an hour onto their daily trip to the stables.”

SEIB Offers More Choice in Horsebox Insurance South Essex Insurance Brokers Limited (SEIB) was the first company to offer horsebox insurance. When Barry Fehler the founder of SEIB bought his first horsebox he found that the only cover available was for commercial vehicles and the premiums did not reflect the care with which the vehicle is driven or the usually low mileage.

New in 2013 – HGV’s with up to 10 horses and hire and reward

SEIB can now offer cover for hire and reward, so if you drive around other peoples horses for a fee you can get the appropriate cover from South Essex Insurance Brokers. The cover is an option for those who transport horses for a living and also for private owners who just want to make extra income by transporting other owner’s horses and to be paid for the service. SEIB have always allowed a contribution towards costs if a horsebox owner takes a friend’s horse out. However, as the

economy continues to struggle and the cost of keeping a horse just seems to spiral it has become clear that some horsebox owners want to transport other people’s horses to provide extra income. SEIB have extended the horsebox policy to accommodate this situation on payment of an additional premium. The horsebox scheme has also been reviewed and can now cover HGV lorries accommodating up to ten horses, in the past the policy was limited to horseboxes that carried up to just six.

Did You Know?

You may not realise that horsebox insurance is not the same as standard car insurance. If you have fully comprehensive cover on car insurance there is usually ‘DOC’ cover included. This stands for ‘driving other cars’ and would mean that you would be covered for third party when driving another car not belonging to or hired by you. This cover does not extend to driving horseboxes as these are based on a commercial vehicle policy and by definition are not cars. It is not wise to have only one driver on a horsebox insurance policy because even if you have a minor accident while at a show, if you are unable to drive the horsebox home, no one else would be insured to drive it. SEIB recommends that you insure your horsebox for any driver, although there may be age restrictions this does mean that your lorry and horses will be able to get home from an outing even if you aren’t able to drive. Marketing Manager, Nicolina Mackenzie said: “SEIB now in its 50th year continues to review the cover on offer and whenever possible increase the options available to truly meet the needs of our customers.” For more information please contact SEIB on 01708 850 0000.

arry found an underwriter and launched the SEIB Horsebox Insurance Scheme. The policy offered very competitive rates for the size of vehicle and this philosophy continues today. The cover on offer has been changed and improved over the years. Full breakdown cover that takes care of the horses as well as the passengers and vehicles was added and now different underwriters offer the varied cover available through SEIB. Horsebox insurance through SEIB gives comprehensive cover as standard and there are numerous discounts to make the policy more affordable. For example, a 3.5T vehicle can incur a 20% discount if it is valued at under £15,000 and there are discounts for vehicles valued under £4,000 and another at under £7,500. The discounts don’t stop there as there are introductory discounts as well as some for insured driver only or insured and spouse. All these discounts make the policy very affordable. Another advantage of the SEIB horsebox insurance is that it can accommodate drivers from the age of 21 and even younger if necessary, but as an additional driver. This will be more expensive and they must have held a full UK licence for at least a year.

DON’T PANIC

There has been a lot written about sugar and starch levels in horse feeds and forages because they play an IMPORTANT role in equine health. Feeds and forages vary in starch and sugar content and ‘high sugar’ feeds can be detrimental to horses because they may disrupt normal digestion, potentially increasing the risk of colic and laminitis and even exacerbating certain medical conditions such as muscle myopathies or Equine Metabolic Syndrome. However, there is an increasing amount of misleading information available about the role of sugar and starch in the equine diet that is resulting in much confusion and panic amongst horse owners. We receive many calls from customers enquiring about feeds that are completely sugar free, as they want to eliminate sugar from their horse or pony’s ration..... and yet they turn their horses and ponies out on fresh pasture on a daily basis!

Understanding your Horse with Weymarsh Dressage

Right: Sarah Ridd riding Bunnie a homebred Weymarsh Dressage Horse

T

he first in a series of demonstrations from the Weymarsh Dressage team took place on Saturday 18th May at Weymarsh Dressage in Bramley, Surrey. The demonstration, ‘Is your horse trying to tell you something?’ was hosted by Advanced Dressage rider Sarah Ridd and vet, farrier and chiropractor all rolled into one, Jose Garcia. The team was joined by a number of new faces all keen to see Sarah’s horses, Bunnie and Copper, in action and of course to sample the delicious homemade cakes on offer. Both horses used in the demonstration, Bunnie and Copper, were firstly warmed-up by Sarah and then untacked and presented to Jose who explained how he works as part of the Weymarsh team and regularly treats the horses to achieve the consistent wellbeing and best performance from the horses. Jose described how the equine chiropractic work that he practices focuses on the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of biomechanical dysfunction of the skeleton, the spine and its effect on the nervous system throughout the body. On both horses Jose initially performed a head to foot static palpitation to assess any misalignments within the body, followed by a few minor ‘adjustments’, which is the technical term for realigning the misalignment with a short sharp thrust along the plane of the joint. During the treatment both horses were very relaxed with Copper lowering his head and beginning to lick and chew. Bunnie and Copper were then re-mounted and the effects of the treatments were clear for all to see, both horses looked far more free and loose in their movement and the overall appearance was of strong, supple, happy horses working well. For further information please contact Jo on 07894 525 225 or visit Weymarsh Dressage Facebook page.

POLO:

Not just a game for Kings By Stephen Biddlecombe Polo is an exhilarating, fast paced team sport and has often been referred to as “The Sport of Kings”. The dynamic game originated in Persia, but has since established itself across the globe and is now becoming more accessible for everyday riders to have a go! What is the name of the game?

The aim of Polo is to score as many goals as possible and players do so by driving a ball into the opposing team’s goal using a longhandled mallet. Not only does this test accuracy and co-ordination, but the bustle of a polo field full of ponies and riders can be tough to negotiate so skill and technique are imperative. Traditionally played on a large grass pitch up to 300 yards long by 160 yards wide, each polo team consists of four riders and their ponies. Each polo match is divided into sections, known as chukkas, enabling the riders to swap ponies throughout the game preventing exhaustion in this fast paced, high-energy sport. At top level a game consists of eight chukkas, each lasting around 7 minutes each but in many lower level matches fewer chukkas are played.

All the gear

You may notice that the tack and equipment used in Polo differs to other disciplines. Stephen Biddlecombe of World Wide Tack tells us more about this important kit… LEG PROTECTION: Polo is a fast and furious game, with a lot of stopping, turning and pressure on the pony’s legs, so adequate protection is important. Polo players often apply both soft fleece bandages and supportive tendon boots in order to maximise safety. World Wide Tack offers 18 different coloured polo bandages designed specifically with polo in mind with extra length for support and protection. CONTROL IS KEY: The correct bitting is vital when it comes to Polo. A horse must be responsive to the rider’s aids, often turning on a sixpence and going from gallop to halt in a matter of seconds. Bombers Bits are fast becoming the go-to bits for polo players because of the gentle control they offer. Each bit has been designed by Peter Nel, a prolific polocross player, and is made from blue sweet iron, which is easily oxidised encouraging salivation and the acceptance of a warm and sweet bit. Equine Management Ltd are exclusive distributors for Bombers Bits in the UK and if there is not something to fit the bill in their extensive collection, they offer a bespoke service allowing players to choose the mouth and cheek piece size specifically. LEATHERWORK THAT LASTS: There is a lot riding on the safety and security of a horse’s tack in Polo, which is why purchasing top quality equipment is imperative. World Wide Tack pride themself on top quality, British made bridle work and accessories, from martingales, breastgirths and stirrup leathers, to nosebands, leather overgirths and reins. You need a firm holding when playing polo and the security that your equipment is going to stay intact for the duration in all conditions give players peace of mind.

Try it, you might like it!

Polo, once thought of to be an elitist sport, is becoming more available outside the realms of the rich and famous, with group polo lessons including a hired pony being offered by clubs such as Sussex Polo, Epsom Polo Academy, All England Polo Club at Hickstead and FHM West Sussex Polo club to name but a few. Lessons typically range from between £50-£100 per session, dependent on whether engaging in a group session or looking for one-to-one tuition. You don’t need to be an experienced rider to try your hand at Polo as you will be taught a new style of riding that contradicts a lot of what you may have been taught in other disciplines and many people who take up the sport have no previous equestrian experience.

Learning the ropes

Generally in your first lesson you will learn the fundamentals of hitting the ball, basic rules and how to control your pony whilst co-ordinating the mallet! Most lessons involve trying to perfect the art of hitting the ball from a wooden horse to start with, before you get in the saddle and feel how responsive a polo pony really is! By the end of your first lesson you will usually have the opportunity to play a chukka or two, and we defy anyone not to come away with a new Polo addiction!

Not ready to saddle up?

If you don’t fancy having a go yourself but would like to get involved by watching some polo, living in the South East is the best place for it with world class tournaments at Guards Polo Club in Windsor on grass, International test match arena polo at Hickstead or the gorgeous and friendly Knepp Castle Polo Club showing low goal matches. Make 2013 the year you get hooked on this spectacular sport! World Wide Tack is one of the UK’s leading Polo equipment retailers, supplying tack and accessories to many of the most prestigious clubs and riders. The winning formula Top show rider Lynn Russell has over 20 years experience at the very top of her profession and has numerous high profile wins under her belt. Renowned for her skill both under saddle and in producing horses into show-ring super stars, Lynn gives us an insight how to turn a horse into a showing star courtesy of Nettex.

W

hen it comes to transforming your horse into a show horse – a good pair of clippers with a variety of different blades is a must. Whether you own a hairy cob or a fine skinned thoroughbred, you will need to perfect the art of clipping and trimming skills to make the right impression. With cobs, the hogged mane is not only essential but it’s equally as important to create a look that is neat and tidy. When hogging you should start from the base of the wither and work your way up against the hair growth and ideally you need to encourage the horse to lower his neck. I do it by offering some feed on the ground (cobs can’t turn away from food). You should finish off the forelock area with some smaller clippers this will give a neat finish. If your cob lacks some top line, it is possible to create the impression of a bigger crest by hogging your cob a couple of weeks before, then I rug up using a hood to keep the hair lying in to the shape of the neck line. Lynn Russell shares her tips on turning out a showing star

Always use plenty of fly spray in summer

Fly trouble

Trimming muzzle, ear and eye hair is common place in the show ring, but allow time to get this done carefully, I use small cordless quiet running clippers for the job. When clipping make sure that you also check the clippers every so often, re-oil them and ensure that they don’t get too hot and keep them clean so they glide through the hair without snagging. With the ears, purse together for a clean sharp silhouette and remove the hair inside the ear for a show ring appearance –always use plenty of fly spray in the summer, I put my trust in Nettex Fly Repellent Advanced. Just one application can give your horse complete fly protection for up to 72 hours. I would also recommend a fly mask when turned out in the field. Some horses require clipping fully in the spring before the start of the season and if your horse is one of these, I would carry out a patch test under the tummy to see the colour he will be if you do clip him. Remember if you clip a solid colour late in the spring it may affect the colour. Greys and coloureds are fine they can be clipped anytime.

Practise plaiting

With show hacks, riding horses and hunters, you should perfect your plaits and don’t do too many. These really make the difference to the overall appearance as well. Neat, tidy and even plaits done correctly can emphasise a well muscled neck or even help add some top line, by pushing the plaits up as you sew it, finishing with an odd number including the forelock. To make the process easier I use Nettex Plaiting Spray which also helps to get rid of unsightly hairs that stick up. I always sew my plaits and never use elastic as they get rubbed out easily. All show horses should have their legs trimmed out for neat clean appearance and clipping the coronet band will give a smart finish to the legs. A well pulled tail is also important to really emphasise a horse’s well developed hind quarters, plaited tails are not recommended but they are acceptable on show hacks and riding horses. If your horse won’t let you near him with a pulling comb there are plenty of products on the market place to help you. When pulling a tail, make sure you start at the outside of the dock and work your way down – only removing some hair from the centre of the tail if it is really thick. Tail bandaging your horse’s pulled tail regularly will also encourage the hair to lie flat. 42 Localrider july 2013

Shine from the hoof up

I use hoof oil on my horse’s feet daily and I like to give them a good coat of Nettex Traditional Hoof Oil as a base both at home and at shows. A quick spray of Nettex Quick Gloss Hoof Spray for a last minute preclass touch up is all you need at the show ground. If you are going to use make-up, make sure that you keep it looking natural – make-up should be there to hide small imperfections or nicks discreetly or to emphasise eyes and muzzle, not make the horse look like a painted panda! When it comes to concealing blemishes, the new Nettex Blemish Cover-up Spray should be your secret weapon! It’s long-lasting, water-resistant formula won’t rub off or wash off in the rain, making it a product you can trust and rely on this show season, whatever the weather. The wrong tack can also end up putting you down the line-up, if it doesn’t fit the horse and he doesn’t go well in it. Also if it is uncomfortable for you, it probably will be for the judge too. The wrong tack can also turn a stunning head into an ugly duckling, so make sure you choose correctly.

Top 5 Summer Skin Care Tips

Paul Banwell, Plastic Surgeon & Skin Expert at Mc Indoe Surgical Centre shares his top five tips for protecting your skin, while out in the sun this summer.

1 2

Enjoy riding outside in the sunshine, but ideally ride early in the morning or in the evening, to avoid sun at its hottest.

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate – it is good for your performance, but also for your skin. Spritz regularly! Treat yourself with luxurious Molecular Water after a long riding session. Instantly calm and rehydrate dry, sensitive skin with a mega dose of Electrolytes, moisture-binders and high molecular weight ‘heavy water’.

3

Regular sun protection factors are essential when riding and working outside. Try Heliocare SPF for your face with potent Fernblock photoimmunoprotection. Available from Skin Associates.

4

Vitamin D supplements are a must. There is a suggestion that optimizing vitamin D levels may help prevent against skin cancer. Try Heliocare oral vitamin D capsules.

5

Niacinamide (vitamin B3 serum) is a potent immunoprotectant and regular application to the skin has been shown to reduce skin cancer formation. use daily. look out for ‘Immunologist’ from Rationale Skincare. Don’t forget areas like the ears and the back of the neck, which will be exposed for long periods when applying your protection.

ven the top riders said that only at Championship events (Olympics & Worlds) do you see such horses, riders and top quality show jumping all in one place. Last year we were spoilt by the Olympics, even if you didn’t have a ticket to watch the event live the television coverage was brilliant and it gave us all an opportunity to become familiar with the greatest horse and rider combinations in the world. The Longines Global Champions Tour moves around the world inviting top riders to jump in beautiful cities, such as Madrid, Cannes, Monte Carlo, Vienna and finishing in November in Doha. The competition was fierce, the fences enormous at 1.60m and the jump-off was fast. There was no doubt that the crowd were behind Tim Stockdale and Big Star, having lost the individual medal in London, there were few that didn’t want him to take the number one spot on the podium, but when Ben Maher and his relatively new ride, Cella, cracked up the pace, there was a buzz in the stands that the riders haven’t heard since London 2012. The event is new and the venue for 2014 is still to be confirmed, but if you enjoy top quality show jumping, I would highly recommend visiting next year. FEATURE Hands

The movement of the horse can tip you forward, like this rider - try to squeeze your shoulder blades back and together

Thumbs should be on top, while the rider’s hands must remain still

Trouble shooting: positional pointers

Established Pony Club Instructor and accredited Jump Cross Coach trainer, Michaela Huntington, highlights some common riding problems and offers advice to help you improve the basics.

Remember these are to guide the horse - not to be relied upon for the rider’s security, therefore you must have hands independent to the seat. Thumbs must be on top not resting on the horse’s withers, hands must remain still with your elbows absorbing the natural movements, both reins should be the same length, taut but not tight. One of the best ways to achieve perfect hands is to ensure your seat is completely independent of your hands. Test this by having a lesson with an instructor on a lunge line and ride without your reins which will highlight any extra movement of your hands, making you much more aware of any problems. Co-ordination of all components of your riding position will result in an overall perfect picture like a jigsaw puzzle but if one piece falls out of place, the whole effect will be spoiled. Imagine a straight line drawn from your ear to your shoulder, elbow, hip and heel with another straight line from the horse’s bit, through the reins to your hand and elbow. Maintained at all times and through all gaits, this will ensure complete balance with your horse and a happy, safe partnership. Michaela Huntington is the current Dodson & Horrell National Amateur Champion at both 1.10m and 1.15m, with her own mare, Zula Maeva. She has previously been crowned National Amateur Champion in all four of the National Finals on two different horses, and Michaela Huntington is the gained third place in the recent current National Amateur Winter Classic Final. Michaela is Champion with Zula Maeva an advocate of the RS-tor rider safety aid, visit www.rstor.co.uk, a product which may be used in affiliated showjumping competitions, and that aids stability and security in the saddle, also helping prevent falls.

I

n every day riding, unless under instruction every time, it is easy to succumb to bad habits in your position. Help once or twice a week should keep you tidy and true. Many common errors can creep in and some of the mistakes below can be addressed, once identified together with some tips on how to achieve the perfect position consistently.

Tipping Forwards

Many riders naturally tip forwards, encouraged by the movement of the horse, however this can throw you out of balance, causing hands to move forwards and legs to move back; this results in vulnerability in the security of position, and a higher likelihood of being unseated. One of the best tips to avoid this is to squeeze your shoulder blades back and together, which will draw your body to an upright position and ensure your shoulders are square. Another point is to always keep your head straight and your eyes forward – your body naturally follows where your eyes look, so never look down.

See the RS-tor at Libbys International’s stand at events inc. Eridge Horse Trials in June, and the Kent County Show in July.

Lower Leg

This is commonly either too far forward or back, but must remain central and in line with your girth. Too far back will result in your toes coming down and heels coming up, over bending of the knees resulting in your legs rising, and the likelihood of losing your stirrups. Too far forward and you will not have enough bend in the knee, losing connection with the horse, often resulting in pushing your weight too far back in the saddle. An easy solution would be to ensure your stirrups are the correct and comfortable length for you to ride with. Sit on your horse with your legs dangling; your stirrups should touch your ankle bone, and then adjust to your own preference. Ensure stirrups are always on the balls of your feet (between toes and instep). Keep a slight bend in the knees and push your heels down, maintaining this position in all paces to give complete security of seat. JULY 2013 Localrider 77

A Healthy Gut is the Key to Long Life Understanding the horse’s delicate digestive system can help to guard against colic and keep older horses healthy and happy. Words by Petplan Equine Vet, Gil Riley

T

he old adage that prevention is better than cure is never truer than in the case of colic which is one of the most common causes of equine fatality, particularly in older horses. As with any condition, the key to prevention is understanding the causes and the steps that can be taken to avoid them. Colic is a not an illness but a term used to describe the symptoms of abdominal pain, which in horses are usually caused by problems in the gastrointestinal tract. There are over 70 different types of intestinal problems that cause colic symptoms, which can range from mild to severe and life threatening.

Good digestion starts in the mouth

Maintaining a healthy digestive system is one of the most important factors in preventing colic. Well chewed food is the first step to good digestion so make sure that your horse’s teeth are in good condition. Ask a vet or equine dentist to check your horse’s teeth at least once and preferably twice a year. This is particularly important with older horses to ensure they are still able to chew their food effectively.

Feed little and often

When a horse swallows food it travels down the oesophagus (food pipe) into the stomach, which is about the same size as a rugby ball. Because horses have relatively small stomachs for their size they need to feed little and often. The stomach is really an entrance portal to the intestine, which is a huge tube that acts like a conveyor belt and ‘stews’ food over a period of time. Grass is a difficult product to break down and the longer the gut, the more likely that something can go wrong, so it is important to keep the horse’s diet as consistent as possible.

Introduce dietary changes gradually

From the intestine the food moves into the caecum, which is the size of a space hopper, but the shape of a cigar. This is the fermentation vat in the horse and contains billions of microbes and flora to help break down the food. Sudden changes in the diet can confuse the microbes and lead to flora dying off and toxins being released, which can also result in laminitis.

Provide plenty of fresh water The caecum leads into the colon, which is between four to eight metres in length and the width of a drainage pipe so a massive structure to be accommodated in the abdomen of the horse. The colon is where water is reabsorbed and nutrients are absorbed. Dehydration can lead to impaction colic so providing a good supply of clean, fresh water is vital. If your horse is bedded on straw make sure that you feed him regularly as if the horse eats straw bedding this can also lead to an impaction colic.

Tape worm and encysted red worm

Worms are a major enemy of a horse’s digestive system and regular worming is vital. The second most important parasite that horses are affected by is the tapeworm and this is found in the junction of the small intestine, caecum and colon. A blood test can measure the horse’s recent exposure to tapeworm and there are some effective products on the market to control it. But by far the most important worm that affects horses is the small red worm, which inhabits the cecum and colon. It has a simple lifecycle, replicates very quickly and, through grazing, horses can easily re-infest themselves and infest other horses. The small red worm has levels of resistance to many worming products and can also burrow into the wall of the caecum and colon and encyst or ‘play dead’. In this

state it does not metabolise so survives any wormers and can then re-emerge into the caecum or colon after the wormer given has cleared the system. It tends to re-emerge in autumn/winter so it is important to worm horses at this time with a product that is effective against small red worm and has a duration activity so that it is still around to act on the encysted larvae as they emerge.

Age matters

As horses get older, their digestive systems can become less efficient and they tend to be more susceptible to colic so, if your horse is approaching the veteran stage, it is more important than ever to put preventative measures in place in your management programme. With colic claims regularly reaching in to the thousands it may be worth thinking about insurance to ensure you can afford veterinary treatment for your horse if, despite your best efforts, your horse still suffers a bout of colic.

Top Tips for Colic Prevention 1. Have your horse’s teeth checked regularly 2. Feed little and often 3. Keep the diet consistent and introduce any changes gradually 4. Administer a wormer that is effective against red worm, on November 5th 5. Always provide plenty of fresh, clean water. Visitors to the Royal International Horse Show at Hickstead from 31st July to 4th August will be able to see a demonstration model of the equine gut and meet Petplan Equine Vet, Gil Riley, on the Petplan stand. A video of Gil explaining the horse’s digestive system can be viewed on the Pet plan Equine Facebook page. Feeding the ❀ Veteran in Summer ❀

A

s your horse ages his needs do change and it’s important to know how his diet should be changed accordingly, so that it continues to meet his needs – for example, the older horse will have an increased requirement for energy for maintenance, he’ll also have increased demands for certain vitamins and minerals. As with all feeding regimes it’s always better to keep things as simple as possible. A general supplement specifically designed for the older horse should provide the correct balance of all vitamins and minerals, together with yeast to aid digestion and nutrients to support joint health. However, if additional joint support is needed ensure the product chosen will complement rather than conflict with the general supplement; and also avoid feeding more than one supplement that provides a broad range of nutrients. If in any doubt about which products to recommend always ring the manufacturers for advice.

Aloeride for Veterans

Mollichaff Veteran

If you own a veteran horse or pony, keeping them looking and feeling good as the seasons change, can be a challenge. Aloeride is a pure organic aloe vera supplement, which not only helps promote a healthy, shiny coat, but also helps to support your veteran’s immune system, which can often become compromised with age. Aloeride also helps support healthy skin, conditions hooves and aids rejuvenation and recovery too. Either add the powder to your horse’s feed or for those that live in on ‘thin air’, simply mix with a little water in a syringe.

Mollichaff Veteran from HorseHage is a high fibre forage mix that has been specially formulated for older horses and ponies and those that are unable to consume long forage and require a complete forage replacer. Many elderly equines have loose or missing teeth and cannot chew long stemmed forage such as hay or haylage. Mollichaff Veteran is made from chopped ingredients so it is easy to manage and is very palatable too, making it great for fussy feeders. It is made from a balanced blend of dried grass, dried alfalfa and high quality oat straw and is topped with a unique dressing combining linseed and soya oil with a small amount of low sugar molasses and added vitamins and minerals, plant-based antioxidants, biotin, mint, nettle and salt. Linseed oil is a rich source of amino acids and essential fatty acids including Omega 3 which can help in the nutritional maintenance of arthritis and inflammatory skin conditions and also help optimise the immune system. Antioxidants from a plant-based source are included to help combat free radicals and maintain your horse in good health. Nettles are naturally high in vitamins and minerals and therefore make this herb ideal for use in feeds to help in the nutritional support of the circulatory system, laminitis, rheumatism and arthritis, which many older horses can suffer from. Mint contains flavanoids that act to relax the digestive tract and most horses also find the aroma and taste of mint to be particularly appealing; and Salt provides two important electrolytes – sodium and chloride. Mollichaff Veteran also contains added limestone to provide additional calcium and biotin for healthy hoof growth.

www.aloeride.com

Rowen Barbary Senior Support Senior Support is a specialist veteran mix for older horses at rest or in low level work with elevated nutrients to meet with the higher nutritional needs of the veteran. The high oil content will help ensure excellent overall condition is maintained while the high fibre levels will help encourage slow rates of digestion. Every 2kg of Senior Support provides 4g of Glucosamine HCL to help support joint mobility and 5g of Yeasacc 1026. Yeasacc will help support optimum fibre and mineral digestion within the hind gut and help to maintain gut health. Extra Biotin is added to help maintain healthy hooves along with super high levels of Vitamin E to help support the immune system and maintain a healthy antioxidant levels. Consisting of small sized particles it is ideal for older horses that chew and digest less efficiently and also contains natural herbs spearmint and garlic. www.rowenbarbary.co.uk

NoBute

Fibre-Beet

Containing liquid Devils Claw extract, NoBute assists with the nutritional maintenance of healthy bones and joints whilst also aiding mobility. Produced from natural herbal ingredients the NoBute range of liquid feeding supplements can be fed long term with no ill effects and provides veterans with an alternative to the pain relief drug Bute. A Super Fibre conditioning feed, FibreBeet is a formulated blend containing all the benefits of the original Speedi-Beet product with added high quality Alfalfa for optimum condition, and to provide quality protein for muscle tone and function. Ideal for veteran horses, Fibre-Beet is very palatable and easy to chew even if teeth are poor or missing. Fibre-Beet has added biotin for hoof quality and is approved by The Laminitis Trust. It can also be used as a forage replacer (up to 40% of the daily forage allowance). Soaked and ready to feed in only 45 minutes in cold water, or 15 minutes in hot water.

HaySoft When feeding the veteran horse choosing a good quality forage is essential. HaySoft provides a quality range of haylage and chaff products which undergo a state of the art dust extraction method removing dust and potentially harmful spores without the need for soaking. Made from rye grass cut when nutritional levels are high, HaySoft contains high levels of fibre, proteins, vitamins and minerals. Haysoft is an ideal forage for veterans as it is soft, palatable and easy to chew and digest due to its high moisture content. Included in the range are HaySoft Original (a high quality dust free forage), HaySoft High-Fibre (contains high levels of nutrients), HaySoft Oat Chaff (adds extra fibre to the horses diet for a healthy digestive system) and HaySoft Hay Chaff (can be used to bulk out feeds to discourage the horse eating too quickly).

In The Pink Senior is recommended for all older horses and ponies, whether signs of age are obvious or not. www.naf-equine.eu/uk

Saracen Horse Feeds Veteran Mix Saracen Horse Feeds was the first feed manufacturer to create a ration specifically for older horses back in 1993, Saracen Horse Feeds Veteran Mix. The feed is designed especially for horses and ponies over 16-years-old, to promote optimum condition whether your older horse is in work, rest or play. Older horses are prone to weight and muscle loss, particularly during the colder months when the grass quality is poor, therefore they need a careful supply of the right source of calories. Older horses, naturally, have their workloads reduced, and therefore they tend not to require the same levels of energy. Veteran Mix is a low starch, oat free ration based on Saracen’s unique ‘Super-fibre’ technology. ‘Super-fibre’ sources contain a similar level of accessible calories to that of cereals, enabling the cereal portion of the recipe to be reduced, and consequently the starch level of the diet is greatly reduced. This helps to avoid the likelihood of any digestive disorders caused by high cereal based diets, but still provides the older horse with the calories needed for maintenance. Veteran Mix also includes essential antioxidants such as Vitamin e. Antioxidants act to mop up free radicals helping the horse to maintain normal muscle function and decrease recovery time after exercise. Saracen’s Veteran ration is also available in pencil form, to supply the same nutritional value, with slightly fewer calories. www.saracenhorsefeeds.co.uk

Feed news Haygain Hay Steamer With older horse more prone to losing weight, owners need to ensure their horse receives enough forage. Hay is undoubtedly the most ideal forage. Its only flaw can be the levels of dust spores it contains, which may put horses off eating and can cause respiratory problems. HAyGAIN’s scientifically proven steaming method provides the complete solution, destroying all dust spores, mites, bacteria and mould found in hay. The steamed hay will retain its nutritional goodness, and trials have shown that horses - even fussy eaters - love it because of its sweet smell and palatability. The HAyGAIN HG-600 hay steamer is ideal for smaller yards and for use away at competitions. Hay is steamed effectively in approximately 50 minutes. www.haygain.com

Electrolytes & Other Feed News Science Supplements Complete Electrolytes Complete electrolytes is a unique formulation that provides a palatable source of the key electrolytes sodium, chloride, potassium, calcium and magnesium. Fully balanced, it replaces electrolytes in proportion to which they are lost. The only electrolyte using MicroBeadTM Technology meaning it dissolves in the small intestine where uptake is optimal and gentle on the stomach unlike ordinary electrolytes. The major electrolytes sodium, chloride, potassium, calcium and magnesium are key nutrients required for nerve and muscle function, maintenance of normal hydration and digestive, kidney, lung and heart function. Horses in work, competing and racing require extra electrolytes to replace those lost in sweat, faeces and urine and suboptimal electrolyte intake can lead to muscle problems and poor performance. www.sciencesupplements.co.uk

NAF Electro To maximise the performance of your horse it is vital he remains hydrated and alert. There are three clear steps you need to take in order to maintain your horse’s hydration, these are to rehydrate, recharge and recover. electro replaces the salt lost in sweat and kick starts the process of replenishing the water levels depleted through sweat, which can be as much as 60 litres a day from a top level performance horse working on a hot humid day. electro comes in a simple, convenient, squeezy bottle with a sports top, so it may be drenched directly into the horse’s mouth as and when needed, without any delay. This triggers the all important post exercise recovery process at the earliest possible time, helping to restore the electrolyte and water balance and so avoid dehydration, loss of co-ordination and muscular stiffness. Peter Charles, International British Showjumper, uses electro, he said: “electro is really handy. It is great to be able to literally get electrolytes straight into your horse’s mouth - as quickly and conveniently as this. The special sports cap and the squeezy bottle makes administering electro so easy and you don’t even get wet. Absolutely brilliant for travelling, at a show or in the collecting ring.” www.naf-uk.com

Equine America Apple Lytes Granules

Equine America V-Biotic® Powder equine America V-Biotic® Powder is more than just a feed balancer. It is a super concentrated V-Biotic® - a premium grade, broad spectrum product which has been specially formulated to provide the comprehensive balance of essential vitamins and minerals your horse or pony needs, and which may be lacking in their domestic diet. V-Biotic® contains echinacea for the immune system, Turmeric for a healthy liver, highly effective probiotics and powerful anti-oxidants, and the very best ingredients to support bone, hoof and muscle tissue and benefit the circulatory system. V-Biotic® will complement any feeding regime without any additional ‘heating’ effects - feed to all horses daily for optimum health and condition. V-Biotic® can help maintain vitality in the older horse.

Feed Apple lytes Granules daily to horses or ponies in hard work, especially those who are sweating. As horses work and sweat they lose vital electrolytes and mineral salts. At low levels these can be replaced with Sodium Chloride (salt) but, if the horse is in medium to hard work and sweating on a daily basis, an electrolyte supplement must be provided. Without electrolytes, the horse will feel lethargic, and a continuation of this loss is highly detrimental to the horse’s health. As the main electrolyte is a salt (sodium chloride) it is important to use a salt – granular based product (not a solution) as it is not possible to suspend enough of the mineral salts needed within a solution. Apple lytes is a salt-based product which can be added to the feed on a daily basis. For high level competition and endurance events, Apple lytes is also available in a handy syringe for instant replenishment of electrolytes. electrolytes should not be fed to a dehydrated horse - always ensure water has been ingested first, and that the horse has recovered from exercise.

Nettex Electrolytes The Nettex Electrolyte Range has been formulated to replace vital salts that are lost through any form of sweating brought on from strenuous exercise, travelling or stress-related conditions. Ideal for using during the hotter months and competition season, the Electrolyte Range is available in powder and liquid form or a syringe paste. Containing branch chain amino acids (BCAA), products in the range will assist in muscle recovery, top up energy levels and reduce the build-up of lactic acid that can lead to muscle cramps, tying up and even colic. Nettex Maintenance Powder is designed to replace vital sodium, potassium and chlorides that are required for speedy recovery and help to maintain stamina. The powder should be administered after heavy sweating, either from exercise or hot weather, or when the horse has been stressed, such as travelling or moving yards. The powder can be mixed with feed or diluted in the horse’s water, making it simple to administer. Nettex Maintenance Liquid is ideal for fussy feeders that turn their nose up at powders. In liquid form, this electrolyte is absorbed into the bloodstream more quickly than powder and is therefore suitable for using at a show when your horse might need an energy top up fast. Nettex Electrolyte Syringe Paste Boost offers results in just 30 minutes and is the perfect electrolyte to carry when you’re on the go with your horse. Easy to administer, the paste is given just like a syringe wormer and is therefore ideal for horses that don’t finish all their food. www.nettexequine.com

Blue Chip Balancers Many owners believe that their horses or ponies do not need to be fed during the summer months. This is a common misconception and in fact it is even more important to supply your horse or pony with vitamins, minerals and nutrients often lacking in grass. The easiest way to overcome this issue is to feed a high quality feed balancer such as Blue Chip Original. Original contains all the vitamins, minerals and nutrients that your horse or pony requires on a daily basis, combined with a probiotic, yeast to ensure a healthy gut. Horses and ponies that are over-weight or good doers often lack a nutritionally balanced diet as their owners do not want them to put on any additional weight. This is where feeding a low calorie, low sugar, low starch diet feed balancer such as Blue Chip Lami-light is the ideal solution. Lami-light will ensure your horse or pony gets their daily required vitamins, minerals and nutrients without encouraging unwanted weight gain. As with all the balancers in the Blue Chip range, Lami-light is whole-cereal and molasses free making it very low in sugar and starch and ideal for laminitic-prone horses and ponies, which are often already on a restricted diet. The competition season often sees horses and ponies being competed most weekends and this can have a marked effect on their nutritional requirements. All levels of competition horses will have a greater nutritional requirement with those at the top levels requiring the most support. Choose a performance feed balancer such as Blue Chip Pro, which not only includes a higher level of vitamins and minerals but also a prebiotic to help remove pathogenic bacteria and a blood building formula to aid oxygen transportation. All the balancers in the Blue Chip range are formulated to make feeding easy, and contain a complete hoof and respiratory formula, alleviating the need to feed additional supplements. Feeding a high quality feed balancer such as one from the Blue Chip range ensures your horse or pony is getting a nutritionally balanced diet without the need for large cereal based feeds. Providing Blue Chip in your horse or pony’s diet will ensure a healthy gut and healthy digestive system, resulting in a happy, healthy horse.

Blue Chip AppleCalm and CarrotCalm Blue Chip’s instant action calming syringes are ideal for all horses and ponies and come in the palatable flavours, apple or carrot. Each syringe contains 3 easy to use doses, and no banned substances. AppleCalm and CarrotCalm contain fast acting Magnesium, L-tryptophan and Vitamin C, all helping to keep the horse relaxed and settled. Blue Chip’s instant action syringes are: • Non drowsy – Suitable for use in competition • 100% natural – No artificial colours or flavours • Suitable for competing/travelling/box rest or any stressful situation. www.bluechipfeed.com

It is now a very well established fact that our equines require their diet to be supplemented with vitamins, minerals and micronutrients. In the past many horses could survive and often flourish on forage alone but modern yard set ups, with changes in agricultural methods, can lead to our equine’s pasture being overgrazed resulting in deficiencies in their diet. Many people only think of a balancer as a concentrated feed substance, however a nutrient rich lick such as Horslyx can provide a simple and cost effective method of balancing and supplementing the equine diet. The well-formulated lick is the equivalent of a human multivitamin supplement and balances the diet with the inclusion of essential vitamins, minerals and trace elements, including the unique Healthy Hooves package containing Biotin, Zinc, and Methionine. Available in four different formulations; Original, Respiratory, Mobility and Garlic, Horslyx will appeal to even the fussiest of feeders. Nutritious Horslyx is extremely palatable, providing equines with essential nutrients in an appetizing recipe. Along with optimum levels of forage, Horslyx allows your horse to slowly trickle feed the remaining nutrients required, allowing for optimum digestion and absorption. The unique composition of Horslyx is designed to be licked not chewed which slows down the rate of consumption and helps to keep your horse occupied and engaged, minimising stress and boredom levels - particularly when stabled. www.horslyx.com

KM Elite Ultimate Oil KM Elite Ultimate Oil is the next generation in oil supplementation. Ultimate Oil is a blend of high quality oils providing more than 190 bioactive nutrients including healthy ratios of Omegas 3, 6, 9 and rare Omega 7 - nourishing the body with essential fatty acids, minerals, plant sterols, antioxidants, amino acids, anti-viral and antibacterial nutrients and vitamins including Vitamins A, B1, B2, B6, B12, B15, C, E, K. All the oils in ultimate Oils are of the highest quality, easily biologically absorbed by your horse and are included at specific levels for specific reasons so they work together, creating a synergetic effect for the total health and well-being of your horse. One of these effects is the balance and ratios of essential fatty acids Omega 3 and Omega 6. It is important to remember that horses need a balance of both Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids for optimal health and performance. It isn’t necessarily so that one is better than the other - they simply have different roles in the body and must be in balance with each other for optimal health and body function. Omega 3 is responsible for repairing cellular walls and maintaining a fluid and efficient waste-nutrient transfer. It’s also critical for brain function and is instrumental in cleaning up after an injury has healed, acting as a potent anti-inflammatory. Omega 6 on the other hand, is responsible for causing inflammation and immune system reactions, which is necessary to stabilize injuries and fight off infections. www.kmeliteproducts.co.uk

Sweet

itch

Words by Pauline Williams BSc, MSc, MA, Vet MB, Cert EM (Int Med) MRCVS of The Arundel Equine Hospital

S

weet itch is a skin condition caused by an allergic reaction to midge bites (primarily Culicoides spp).It is also known as insect bite hypersensitivity or summer seasonal recurrent dermatitis and can affect horses, ponies and donkeys all over the world according to the distribution of the midges. In the United Kingdom, there appears to be an increased incidence in pony breeds. In one survey between 2 to 8% ponies were said to be affected. However, it can affect any breed and sex and has been shown to be inherited in some cases. All animals are bitten by midges but only those that are allergic to the bites show clinical signs. There are different species of Culicoides which feed at different sites; some at the mane and withers, others at the tail and or belly and legs. The animal may be allergic to one or more species and therefore they may show signs on one area only, such as the tail or all over the body in severe cases. Repeated exposure to the midges is to some degree protective. Icelandic ponies born in Iceland where there are no midges develop much more severe disease when they are moved to Britain than those Icelandic ponies born in this country.

Clinical signs

Affected animals show varying degrees of pruritis (itchiness) which leads to self trauma due to rubbing. The most common sites affected are the mane and tail, but sometimes only the belly is affected and in severe cases the animal may show signs all over the body including the legs. Rubbing leads to alopecia (hair loss), ulcers and bleeding with secondary crusts (scabs) and infection. Many of these changes are reversible out of season when there are much fewer midges. However, in more chronic cases the skin can become hyper pigmented (blackened) and thickened with ridges, especially along the mane. Severely affected animals may lose weight due to chronic irritation and show behavioural changes from tail swishing, rolling, and rubbing the belly on the ground to being unrideable at the peak midge feeding times of day (dusk and dawn).

Buying a pony with sweet itch or suspected sweet itch

If you are buying a pony that is said to be managed successfully by one of the different treatment options, you should be aware that a change in location may either improve or exacerbate the condition to a point that it is no longer manageable. Sweet itch sufferers may also deteriorate with age.

When buying a pony in the winter out of the midge season, in severe cases the thickening on the neck and tail head may still be evident. However, it is often difficult to detect animals which show milder signs or those that have been managed effectively through the summer. Often there is evidence of different hair lengths, particularly at the tail head, but it is important to ask the owners to declare if the pony suffers from the condition. At present there is no reliable blood test or other allergy test to detect sweet itch sufferers out of season but research is ongoing.

Management

stop scratching is often employed but can be distressing to the animal that will often find other ways to relieve the discomfort and is ideally used alongside other methods. The use of scratch pads (which are specially designed rubber mats) allows a place for the animal to get relief whilst minimising secondary trauma.

1. Reducing midge exposure: The life cycle of the midge is important in understanding how to reduce exposure. The adult midge can only fly a few hundred metres and the females lay their eggs in damp moist soil or slow moving water, so try to avoid putting your animal near these areas if possible. The life cycle can only be completed at temperatures above 5C which is why the condition is not seen in colder countries and is seasonal in Britain .The midges preferred feeding times are dusk and dawn and so stabling between 4pm and 8am with a fine mesh screen away from the muck heap is effective in some cases. Stable fans are often used in other countries both for cooling and to reduce the midge exposure as they are not strong flyers. One of the most popular and most successful methods of avoiding midge bites is the use of specially designed rugs such as the Boett blanket, snug rug or Rambo sweetitch rug. Some are impregnated with an insecticidal product (permethrin). These are designed with a very small mesh that doesn’t allow the midges to penetrate and can be made to measure and adapted to fit almost anywhere on the body. However, they need to be worn well before the sweet itch season (February/March) to be most effective as they are often damaged once the animal is itchy. Insectides and fly repellents including permethrin, cypermethrin, Deet, light oils, citronella for example may help in mild cases but need to be applied frequently. There are also herbal remedies on the market both in feed and topical which are reported to have repellent properties

3. Symptomatic treatment: This includes the use of steroids and antihistamines which have limited value and in the case of steroids has been associated with laminitis. However, shampoos containing aloe vera, oatmeal for example may provide some relief and emollients such as benzoyl benzoate can act as a barrier and have a soothing action.

Currently there is no cure for sweet itch and lifelong treatment is necessary. Management is directed in four main areas; reducing midge exposure, reducing secondary skin trauma/infection, symptomatic treatment and modulation of the immune response.

2. Reducing secondary skin trauma/ infection: The use of electric fencing to

4. Modulation of the immune response: Signs of sweet itch are in fact due to a more complicated reaction of the immune response than just allergy which means that desensitising the animal to the midge allergens is currently not available. However, there is much research in this area. 5. Immunomodulation; trial work using non pathogenic bacilli (bacteria) Bio Eos BE-T-101 has been ongoing since 2005. This modulates the immune response from a dysregulation (Th2 mode) that leads to the classic signs of sweet itch to a more normal response to midge bites (Th1mode). The trial now using weekly oral dosing has shown encouraging results and the final blinded randomised, placebo controlled trial conducted in 2010 are currently being analysed. More information on this treatment can be obtained from the National Sweet Itch Centre www.sweetitch.co.uk/developments. Selective breeding and the possibility of genetic tests in the future may add important information for horse owners. Lifelong management is necessary in all cases of sweet itch and some animals may need to be removed to a different location. Severely affected cases respond less well and euthanasia may be the only option for some owners.
