Welcome

e know some of our readers have been badly affected by the floods and storms and we are thinking of you all. Hoping the damage wasn’t too great and can be quickly repaired. Few will have escaped complete flooding of their stables this winter. The yard where I keep my horse is almost at the top of a hill, but when the water ran off the fields behind the stables it came so fast that Fiona in some stables it even bubbled up through the concrete. But pictured we are lucky and the damage has been minor and the flood with short-lived. I have spoken to other readers whose stables have Miners been flooded for long periods at a time and we really hope Frolic these have started to dry out now and you can soon return to your normal routine and start to enjoy your horses again. The terrible weather has sadly resulted in many of the early events being cancelled, but event organisers are hopeful that if it stops raining and we have some bright sunny days the ground will begin to dry out. If you are wanting to get out and about it is worth checking with event centres what they have going on. LMEQ, as featured in our ‘Where to go Cross Country Schooling Guide’ is on sandy soil and has lost very few days so far this season. Turn to page 36 to find out more. As well as our guide to the best places to go cross country schooling in the South East, we also have our annual Show Dates Guide to the season. It is wonderful chatting to all the enthusiastic event organisers and I feel inspired to blow off the cobwebs and go out and do something fun with my horse this spring. Just in case you are wondering, that isn’t my horse in the picture, it is Miners Frolic or Henry to his friends. It was announced earlier this year that Henry has an abnormal rhythm in his heart and Tina Cook and his owners have made the hard decision to retire him. This picture was taken in 2009 at a yard visit organised by British Eventing to celebrate Tina and Miners Frolic’s Olympic individual and team Bronze medals. Miners Frolic is a true superstar who will be greatly missed on the eventing circuit. Turn to page 32 to read more about Miners Frolic and what his retirement has in store. I hope whatever you are doing with your horse this spring you have fun and remember to keep emailing me your news and pictures to fiona@localrider.co.uk

news The Year of the Horse

M

ake 2014 Europe’s Year of the Horse says international horse charity, World Horse Welfare, as its manifesto for the inspiring year is released. According to Chinese tradition, the year of the horse, stands for strength, loyalty, boldness and vigorousness – all key qualities needed to continue to campaign for better welfare for the horse, says World Horse Welfare as it looks ahead to the new EU elections. “At World Horse Welfare we always challenge ourselves to think ahead – and that’s why we’ve produced our manifesto for the forthcoming European Parliamentary elections to promote what is needed for the benefit of horse welfare. The new candidates need to be aware of the major issues facing horses across Europe in order to make well-informed decisions about their welfare. Hence the World Horse Welfare manifesto aims to bang the drum for horses at UK and EU government level to make sure that horses are not only seen as an important priority but that their needs are clearly understood during the election campaign,” says Roly Owers, Chief Executive of World Horse Welfare and an active member of the Equine Sector Council. World Horse Welfare has been campaigning for better horse welfare since 1927 and has been at the forefront of challenging existing laws, pioneering new ones and working with others in the horse sector and UK and EU governments on improved systems. As the Year of the Horse captures the public’s imagination, this charity - which helps horses across the world through education, campaigning and hands on care, and is the largest horse rescue and rehoming charity in the UK – hopes to capture the attention of the new European Parliament to ensure that horse welfare is put to the top of the list on key issues. www.worldhorsewelfare.org

Complimentary Membership to BSHA The British Show Horse Association (BSHA) is offering complimentary membership to competitors that are only competing in Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) Ridden Hunter Qualifiers. Competitors will be given “Honorary Associate Membership” from May to October 2014, enabling them to compete in all HOYS Ridden Hunter Qualifiers for 2014. Associate membership does not confer any voting rights, so any competitors wishing to partake in the AGM later on this year must ensure they take out BSHA Full Membership. This will assist those Hunter competitors who had paid their 2014 subscriptions to Sport Horse Breeding of Great Britain before the rule changes regarding HOYS qualifiers were announced. All horses competing in HOYS Ridden Hunter Qualifiers must be registered on the BSHA HOYS Ridden Hunter Qualifier Register for 2014. There will be a fee of £50 per horse, in line with registrations for Hacks, Cobs, Maxi Cobs and Riding Horses. Registration forms for Hunter competitors, including horse registration, will be available to download from the BSHA website. The BSHA website is being updated to allow hunters to be registered online, but until that system is ready, all hunter membership and registration applications should be sent to the BSHA office.

Super-sized cheque The former mayor of Richmond, Cllr Rita Palmer, presented the Horse Rangers children’s charity with a super-sized cheque made out for £13,512.28. The hand-over took place in the organisation’s Drill Hall at the Royal Mews on Hampton Court Road. The Poppy Factory was there too to receive a similar value cheque. The Barnes councillor became the 47th Mayor of Richmond Borough and chose the two charities for her year in office because they both help people with rehabilitation and disabilities. Cllr Palmer explained how she met one of the Rangers on a bus and heard all about the charity. “Both of my charities are very close to my heart and there’s nothing better than to meet someone who’s involved. I’ll never forget Lorraine Harmes - she was the key to opening the door to Horse Rangers for me.” Lorraine from Richmond joined as a member of the Riding for Disabled section when she was a teenager and is still with the HRA thirty-five years on.

Breathe easy this spring! Verdo Horse Bedding is a clever heat-treated wood pellet product, created for equine use, which not only has a low dust content, making it the ideal choice for horses with compromised respiratory issues, but also absorbs three times its own weight in liquid. This not only helps maintain a dry environment, but also reduces ammonia, which again helps ensure that your horse is happier and healthier in the stable. Verdo Horse Bedding comes in compact, easy to store bags, which once a small amount of water is added to the bag, a regeneration process is activated and within approximately 20 minutes, you are ready to empty the open bags out into the stable or lorry to create a soft fluffy and dry bed ready for your equine friend! Because the pellets are manufactured from 100% virgin soft wood and heat treated to eliminate pests and bacteria, you can rest assured that your horse is sleeping on only the best and with less waste on the muck heap and beds which are easier and quicker to muck out, both you and your horse can give a sigh of relief this season! www.verdohorsebedding.co.uk

Farming World Horse Shows Farming World Horse & Dog Shows are going ahead as planned. Colette Walker is delighted to announce that the Farming World shows (also known as the Southern Counties & Kent Festival events) are going ahead as planned this year on 18th May and 21st September, despite the visitor attraction closing. Colette said: “We have been assured by the owners of the Faversham Show Ground that our events will be going ahead as normal.” The shows will include show jumping, showing, dressage and a dog show with over 60 classes.

Get your horse ready for a new year of riding and eventing with osteopathy treatment from Margaret. Horses get aches and pains just like humans. Especially when training. Common problems treated include gait problems, injuries from falls, over training, cold back, bucking, bolting, arthritis and lameness. Margaret uses touch, physical manipulation, stretching and massage to increase the mobility of joints, relieve muscle tension, enhance blood and nerve supply to tissues, and to help the horse’s own healing mechanisms. Equi-Expo South East

T

he Kent County Showground, home of the Kent Show will be playing host to Equi-Expo South East, a brand new show for the region which will encompass Master Classes held by top level riders alongside an extensive retail and wholesale show. There have been some huge developments of late to the lay-out of the Kent Showground. The Kent Pavilion has been replaced by a completely new purpose built exhibition hall for 2014, and Equi-Expo will be one of the first events to make use of this amazing new facility. The show will be a showcase event for retail and wholesale companies and will include trade stands from a huge range of equine sectors, from feed, tack and rugs to equine health management. There will be Master Class Demonstrations from Sonny Hillier, Oliver Walter and Simon Blight. Sonny Hillier competes at international level in the demanding sport of Horse Driving Trials, the carriage driving equivalent of ridden three day eventing. Oliver Walter has in his short career been selected for National Dressage Training, Young Professionals and has competed in many classes with various combinations at the Regional and Winter Championships. Simon Blight is a Kent based Para-Equestrian who started riding at the age of three at his local riding school. Falling in love with horses and jumping, Simon pursued his dream of becoming a successful show jumper. As a young man Simon competed while managing yards specialising in horses with behavioural problems. Then, in his mid-thirties, Simon unexpectedly developed Multiple Sclerosis and nearly lost everything. Simon and his team are currently aiming for the GB squad, with the dream of making the next Paralympics in Rio. Saturday 17th May. Kent County Showground, Detling, Kent ME14 3JF. Silhouette Insignia Monoflap Jumping Saddle

Getting you closer to your horse for ultimate control, comfort and stability The Silhouette Insignia is a beautifully crafted wool flocked close contact monoflap jumping saddle designed to enhance the contact and communication between horse and rider. The saddle is lightweight, weighing around 6kg, and perfectly balanced to maximise performance. The wide wool flocked panels allow adjustment as necessary for a perfect fit to maintain freedom and comfort for the horse plus balance, stability and security for the rider. It is covered in pure calfskin leather making it supersoft and durable. The pommel shape has the clearance needed to fit high withered horses such as Thoroughbreds and also those with a wide wither confirmation i.e. Warmbloods. The set up of the blocks allows you to also ride longer without throwing the lower leg back making it the only jumping saddle we know of that allows you to do groundwork as well as jumping. It is therefore also an excellent saddle for eventing. Exclusive to us in the South East it retails at £800.

The mix of equestrian and livestock competition, the fantastic array of trade stands and the spectacular arena displays is the reason why this quintessentially English family show is so popular with competitors and visitors alike. W F Young Inc., manufacturers of the renowned Absorbine® range of grooming, hoof care, fly control and leather care products, have launched Magic Cushion® hoof packing to the UK market. Magic Cushion hoof packing is a great addition to the trusted Absorbine® Hooflex® hoof care range, providing advanced levels of hoof care for performance horses especially in challenging conditions. Hooflex Magic Cushion hoof packing is an efficient way to cool and cushion bruised soles and sore feet. Thermographic tests show that the all-natural formula starts working to reduce heat in hooves in just one hour and the cleaning and cushioning properties help to keep soles in good condition, even under pads. Hooflex Magic Cushion can be used on shod and barefoot horses. It’s sticky, spongy texture enables it to mould perfectly to the horse’s sole. One application of Magic Cushion lasts up to 48 hours. Magic Cushion is widely known to farriers in the US and Europe as a trusted and effective hoof packing. Magic Cushion is formulated for use before and after athletic competition and under pads. It is a natural, capsicum free product and will not test positive in any equine discipline.

How to use Magic Cushion: Step 1: Thoroughly clean all areas of the hoof using a hoof pick and if necessary, a stiff or wire brush. Magic Cushion must come into direct contact with the sole to be effective. Step 2: Apply an amount of hoof packing to the sole sufficient enough to cover the entire sole and cleft of the frog half an inch in depth. Step 3: If your horse has shoes on, put his foot down in sawdust or shavings to keep the hoof packing in place and to allow the liquid ingredients to be absorbed into the sole. If your horse is barefoot, you will need to wrap the hoof to keep the hoof packing in place. Replace every 24-48 hours. Magic Cushion can also be packed under a pad for the duration of the shoes. www.absorbine. co.uk

Dodson & Horrell Celebrates 75th Anniversary The company, which has nourished equine Olympians, fed Grand National winners and fuelled Epson Derby victors, has been at the forefront of major advances in performance-linked animal nutrition throughout this time. Special events and plans – yet to be announced - are in the pipeline for 2014 to commemorate this significant milestone, but to kick-start proceedings, here are a few of the more unusual facts and figures about the family-run company that was born in a small mill in Northamptonshire back in 1939: Dodson & Horrell conducts over 750 forage analysis and lab tests on raw ingredients every week, exports to 42 countries worldwide and receives on average 7,200 enquires per year to its telephone helpline. If all the feed bags produced by Dodson & Horrell were laid end to end, it would be the same as going to the moon and back five times. In an average year, the tonnage output from Dodson & Horrell is more than the weight or 15 Eiffel Towers.

Vice squad

Some experts believe cribbing is a symptom of gastric discomfort or gastric ulcers.

Words by Stephen Biddlecombe of www.worldwidetack.com All about crib biting

Crib biting, like wind sucking, is widely thought to be an equine behavioural stereotypy or vice. It is said by some people to be the equivalent of human obsessive-compulsive disorders. We say ‘widely thought’ as, like so many areas of equestrianism, there are different schools of thought. Some people believe it to be a learned behaviour, a despicable habit involving grasping a solid object and sucking air in. Others believe it to be a symptom of boredom or confinement, while others cite the behaviour as a symptom of gastric discomfort or gastric ulcers. (If the latter is the case, it is unclear whether equines crib-bite because they have gastric discomfort, or whether the discomfort is a consequence of the abnormal behaviour or ‘vice’). Vices are widely acknowledged to be associated with unnatural environments, such as stable confinement and boredom, which can result in increased stress levels. Many owners find that so-called vices are reduced when more suitable levels of food, social interaction and movement are provided, so this management side of horse ownership should always be addressed if you have a horse with a vice! Whatever your views on these behaviours and their causes, if your horse crib bites and you suspect there could be veterinary or nutritional cause behind it, it would be wise to consult your vet, especially if the horse is losing condition or is showing tendencies to colic.

disciplines from cribbing. The product is available in Havana Brown from www.worldwidetack.com in sizes small (for weanlings, yearlings and small ponies), medium (for cobs and medium sized equines) and large (the tack equivalent of full size, for larger horses). When worn in the longterm, in additional to physically stopping the action of cribbing, collars are said to help break the habitual, destructive behaviour itself.

So-called vices may be reduced when management elements such as suitable levels of food and movement are provided.

Surgical options

There have been some interesting recent veterinary developments, in terms of surgical procedures to halt cribbing activity. Professor Daniel J. Burba, of America’s Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine, presented information at the 2013 American Association of Equine Practitioners’ Convention explaining how vets are using laser surgery to restrict the ability of the horse’s larynx to retract. The surgical procedure removes specific muscles and cuts the spinal accessory nerve of the throat, and aims to alleviate the ability of the horse to retract its throat during the act of cribbing, thus preventing the habitual side of the condition. After surgery the horses are permanently unable to adequately retract the larynx, and are said to no longer have the urge to crib bite. In a study by the professor, 84.4% of the horses studied stopped cribbing for at least one year following the procedure. This procedure isn’t widely available, but it will be interesting to see how the recent study is followed up, and how different international veterinary bodies react to the study results.

Cribbing collars

For owners that do not want to consider risky surgery for their horses, a cribbing collar is a popular and humane option, and they work very simply. The Weaver Miracle Collar is one of the most innovative cribbing products around, in my opinion - it stops cribbing or your money back, which is a good indication of the manufacturer’s conviction about the product’s success rate. Importantly, it is humane and comfortable for the horse. This item is carefully handcrafted from weather-resistant harness leather; this means it offers strength and durability (useful if worn every day), but also gentleness to the animal’s hair and coat. It has nickel plated hardware and is well priced at £38.63 excluding VAT. When correctly fitted, it works by applying pressure only when the horse attempts to crib bite, so it can be worn while the horse is eating, drinking or grazing. The Weaver Miracle Collar is guaranteed to physically stop horses of all ages, breeds and MARCH 2014 Localrider 23

What to look for in a

Dressage Stallion Cyden Stallions’ owner Lara Dyson explains what she looks for in a dressage stallion and why confirmation is so important.

W

hen looking for the perfect dressage stallion, good confirmation is vital to achieving movements and paces that score high percentages. Perfection is something that is practically impossible but knowing what to look for can make life much easier for both the trainer, who is responsible for the horse’s education and for the horse, who has to be physically capable of performing what he is asked to do. Horses with good confirmation are more likely to find it easier to perform the movements expected in dressage and less likely to suffer from soundness issues.

really help, allowing a longer stride length and forward reach from the shoulder. A shoulder that is too upright will therefore affect the knee action causing shorter strides and higher knees. The angle of the pastern should also match that of the shoulder to help reduce stress on the knee and fetlock joints and allow good suspension and cadence in their gait Looking at the horse’s head you should be able to get a fist between the jawbones which gives freedom in the jaw. As a double bridle is required to be worn in dressage, the mouth must be big enough for this to fit.

Looks like a Star

Through the Paces

A good rectangular shaped body made up of big shoulders and elegant long lines in the hind quarters will help the horse move and bend well. The horse’s length of back should be in proportion to the rest of its body. A back that is too long can suffer from weakness and a back that is too short can make bending more difficult. The lumbosacral joint should line up directly over the point of hip to help maximize the power of the hind leg. By making the most of the joint’s rotation significant amounts of flexion and extension can take place. A horse with deep set withers, meaning they are high and well set into the back, allows the rider to sit in a better position closer to the horse’s centre of gravity allowing the horse to shift his weight to the hind quarters. Moving down to the limbs, it is essential that the legs are not too long as this can also affect the fluidity of movement especially in the corners of the arena. The front legs should be nice and straight to emphasize the straightness in his movements. Undesirable conformation includes paddling or toeing out. A long humerous can also be desirable and will increase the horse’s ability to move the elbow away from the body, either to the front or the side. This will help with lateral movements such as shoulder-in, haunches-in, leg-yielding, half-pass and turning on the hindquarters or forehand. It is preferable for a dressage horse to be built ‘uphill’ so that the weight can easily be shifted onto the hindquarters. A long forearm and shorter cannon bones are an advantage for height and soundness. The hind legs are required to work extensively in high level dressage movements so it is important that they demonstrate strength, soundness and the ability to carry the horse’s weight in a collected manner. A strong, straight hock with a good angle will flex easily and help improve collection. For those lovely lengthening movements and extending the stride a long sloping shoulder with large angle at the elbow can

The quality of the horse’s gaits is much easier to judge. The walk should not be too big because it can be more difficult to collect. A big canter is not as desirable and will be difficult when it comes to collecting and teaching flying changes. When running freely, you should be able to see the horse’s neck move around which shows good flexibility. When trotted in hand and stopped, the horse should stop with its hindquarters underneath him and not on the forehand. The muscles of the hindquarters should also move when tapped, and the back should drop from pressure and lift from pressure under the belly. It is also good to have a moveable and flexible tail, which shows there is no stiffness through the back.

Cyden Bodyguard Moorland

Cyden Bodyguard Moorland is-eight-years–old, by Grimbaldi x Negro x Coctail. He is an excellent example of a stallion displaying correct confirmation and his extravagant walk and canter frequently gain him nines. Currently competing at Advanced Medium level he is showing a natural talent for Piaffe and Passage which will see him excel as he progresses through the levels. As a KWPN stallion Cyden Bodyguard Moorland is approved by one of the most renowned studbooks worldwide. Cyden Bodyguard Moorland will be standing at Stallion AI Services this April. EX-RACEHORSE NEWS Figgie looking in disbelief as he has to start work at 5am before Alex goes to work in London

Words by Alex Kelly When I accidently bought Figgie at Ascot Sales in 2012 (not something I would recommend) my original intention was to retrain him for the show ring as that’s been my chosen equine discipline since the age of three. Two years later, a lot of hard work and I feel that maybe he is re-educated enough to start to make his way in the show ring.

Figaro Flyer The diary of

What to look for Localrider asked three readers who have successfully taken horses from the racetrack to the show ring, what they look for in an ex-racehorse. Jane Townshend Camissa winning the TB in-hand class at BSHA Show 2013 for owner Jane Townshend Deep Reflection and Helen Newbold in 2012

Camissa – Abi Thorogood riding re-trained racehorse,Camissa

Jane breeds both performance and show horses under the Classictop Stud prefix and has Camissa (ridden by Abi Thorogood), who currently competes in the ROR classes. Jane said: “First impression is very important, I want to see a settled horse in the stable with a big kind eye and that look at me factor.”

Helen Newbold Helen and her ride, Deep Reflection, won the SEIB ROR Show Championship at HOYS in 2013 and Tattersalls TB Show Horse Championship at Hickstead in 2012, as well as a number of other notable classes. Helen said: “It can take several years to turn a racehorse into a true show horse, so picking the right one is very, very important! Look for good correct conformation; the horse must immediately be pleasing to the eye. Their brain is equally important, only some horses will be suited to the life of a show horse. Unfortunately, this is something that one won’t necessarily find out straight away. You can get some idea from a horse’s general outlook – does it say ‘look at me’?”

Lynn D’Estruval, winning trot horiz HOYS 07 – Lynn Russell winning HOYS in 2007 with D’Estruval

Lynn Russell Lynn and her sponsors Baileys Horse Feeds have long been involved with racing and also the re-training of racehorses for a number of different jobs. Lynn regularly runs clinics for the ROR as well as competing in the classes. She won HOYS in 2007 with D’Estruval. Lynn said: “To own an ex-racehorse can be quite a challenge, but without doubt is one of the most rewarding equestrian experiences. Of course I have bought my racehorses thinking about conformation for the show ring, but talk to someone in the know about Thoroughbred breeding, as there are some lines that just don’t take to re-training.” Lynn will be running a Racehorse to Riding Horse Master Class on 15th March 2014. Going straight in at the deep end with more established horses is certainly daunting so lucky for us 2014 brings the introduction of The Jockey Club RoR Novice Thoroughbred Ridden Show Series. Horses eligible to compete in the novice classes are thoroughbred mares and geldings aged four that have raced and are registered with the ROR. They cannot have won any open showing class (RoR, SEIB/HOYS qualifier or any other open show class). The first three will go forward to the Championship at the Aintree National Showing Show in July 2014. In the open classes entrants will be ridden by the judges, but in the novice class they will perform an individual show of no longer than 90 seconds, to include the following movements: Walk, Trot, Canter showing change of leg, extended canter, halt and stand, walk-off on a long rein. Lightweight Rugs ★ ★

★★ ★ ★★

Lightweight turnouts are one of the most versatile rugs to have in your horse’s wardrobe. They are perfect for cool spring days and summer showers, as well as adding as a base layer under a middle or heavyweight rug in the depths of winter. Some of the rugs we have tested this month have a tiny bit of fill and if you have an older or a thin skinned horse this can certainly be a bonus. Horseware Rambo Original with leg arches

JHL Lightweight Plus Turnout Rug

Fully waterproof and breathable, this rug is made from a tough ballistic nylon outer, and filled with thermobonded fibrefill for superior insulation. It has the patented Horseware V-Front closure and leg arches, tail flap, reflective strips and wipe clean tail cord as standard and is compatible with the liners system, so you can turn it into a more heavyweight rug as the weather gets colder. A detachable hood is available separately.

This competitively priced rug has an 80g insulation layer which makes it ideal for cooler summer days, as well as those transitional periods between seasons. Manufactured in 600 denier, with an anti-rub nylon lining, the rug has reflective piping, double quick-release chest fastenings, cross surcingles, leg straps and a generous tail flap. The matching neck cover is sold separately and has no additional insulation.

Colours: Green/Silver, Denim Blue/Lime, Green/Mustard, Navy/Silver Sizes: 5’6” - 7’3” RRP: £200 www.horseware.com LR Comment: This is a beautiful rug. Lots of thought has gone into the design to make it fit perfectly. It has anti-bacterial lining, which I particularly like as it will hopefully help if my horse has any itchy skin. I tested the rug with 100g fill, which is great for cooler spring days.

Bucas Irish Turnout

Whitaker No Fill Turnout Rug

Designed to offer great performance, flexibility and value for money, the Bucas Irish Turnout rugs offer a tough rip-stop outer, which is waterproof and breathable, and a breathable nylon lining to keep your horse fresh and dry. Not only that, but there’s the option of a Combi-Neck, which also features a nylon lining and a layer of ‘Stay-Dry’ material, to keep your horse warm and comfortable during his time in the field. Shoulder darts allow more freedom and a better fit, while cross surcingles and a single front strap will ensure your horse’s rug stays in place. The Combi-Neck has large Velcro straps to make sure it stays well and truly in place, too.

The rug is made from 600 denier waterproof outer lining with no fill. It has black shoulder gussets, elasticated leg straps, waterproof tail guard and fillet string. There is lots of room for adjustment on all the straps and the horse has freedom to move. It also has the option to attach a neck cover if desired. Very competitively priced and well made.

This is a well made rug, which fitted my horse perfectly. The front fittings have Velcro straps over them, which makes it feel like a very secure rug. I found the rug small enough to pop in my washing machine at home, helping to keep it fresh and clean.

Put to the Test Coverup from Harry Hall The Harry Hall Coverup is brilliant to wear to ensure you keep clean on the yard. The Coverup is an all-in-one waterproof coverall with a zip front and fully taped seams. Available in S,M,L, XL in Graphite and priced at around £64.50. For more information please contact Harry Hall on 01274 711101 or visit www.harryhall.co.uk LR Comment: The Harry Hall Coverup has been invaluable this year. It is perfect for protecting clothes from the dirt and rain on a quick visit to the stables. When I have been at the stables all day I have worn a jacket over the top part and stayed very warm and dry. I think it will also be good to wear for spring jobs like fencing, when a fresh breeze can chill one’s back.

CROSS COUNTRY GUIDE

A What to do when you go Cross Country Schooling...

lways take someone else with you cross country schooling and if you are going somewhere you haven’t been before try and take someone who knows the fences. An experienced rider or instructor should be able to guide you to which fences to start with. Some courses have fences which look simple, but have been designed to be more testing and these might catch a young horse out. If you go with a friend on another horse, make sure that you aren’t only giving each other leads, as you will need to jump the fences by yourself when you go to a competition.

Warming-up

Rotherfield-based Bryony Whittington has jumped round Badminton and Burghley. These days she combines competing with training and is brilliant at instilling confidence in horse and rider and helping them to achieve their competition goals. We asked Bryony to talk us through a typical cross country schooling session, with particular emphasis on the inexperienced or young horse.

Whether she is riding a young horse or a more experienced one Bryony always takes her horses for a hack around the schooling venue. Starting in walk or trot, weaving around the fences letting them have a look. The most important thing with a young horse is to get them thinking forward. If your horse is a bit fresh, pop it on a circle and incorporate plenty of changes of rein to gain its concentration. If you do have a young or inexperienced horse you should only take it cross country schooling once you are happy that it is confidently going through puddles and up and down hills on its own.

The first fence Start with a very simple fence such as a log on the ground. Bryony suggests starting in trot and jumping the log both ways until you feel your horse is confident and happy doing this. With a young or inexperienced horse it is good to build in break times, so that they can think about what they have done. Find a few more simple fences and do the same again. If you can find five simple fences which your horse is happy to jump, put them together and jump them at a steady canter. If at any time your horse puts in a big jump, go back and do that again. What might feel like boldness in an older horse, could be a green jump in a young horse and it is important not to dent his confidence.

Ditches, steps & water

Walk and then trot through water until your horse feels confident

With more experienced horses start with a small course of fences

Jumping an Owl Hole These days it’s fairly common to see owl holes on cross country courses. Some Owl holes are designed so that the horse can’t see what’s on the landing side, in which case they need to have a great deal of trust in you if you want them to jump it. Some owl holes stand alone in a field as a frame filled with brush, or quite often they are placed in a hedge line with a circle or square cut out for you to jump through. The Owl Hole in this picture is at LMEQ and is available for anyone to jump. Bryony said: “The only way to get horses used to an Owl Hole is to keep jumping them. Be prepared as green horses can duck as they are frightened of hitting their head. Approach in a strong balanced canter. After jumping an Owl Hole on a green horse go and jump a simple fence before jumping it again and repeat this until it is confidently jumping through. Don’t attempt an Owl Hole until your horse is jumping confidently and if it is possible try and incorporate some fences which jump from light to dark first, so that your horse is used to the change in light.

Bryony Whittington Event Rider (completed Badminton & Burghley) is available for group and individual lessons in all phases. Also a selection of sport horses and ponies for sale. Based Rotherfield, East Sussex. Tel: 07932 150772

Old timers With the more experienced older horses after warming-up select a few fences, around five, which can be jumped together as a small course. There is no need to go at competition speed, just jump them in a bold canter. Once you are happy with those fences put another cluster together. It is good when schooling to build in time to reflect and for you and your horse to have a breather. Whether you are on a young horse or an inexperienced horse always allow plenty of time. Whatever you start you ideally need to be able to finish. If something goes wrong at a fence, it will only add to your horse’s and your anxiety if you have to keep an eye on the time. Take your horse schooling to a variety of places. You will probably find some horses are more confident in open places while others prefer confined spaces and they need to be confident out and about on their own before you take them to an event. The great thing about living in the South East is we have a large number of wonderful trainers and riders. Many of them already have clinic dates booked in at the cross country courses listed in our schooling guide and the ones I have seen are exceptionally good value for money too. If you need help with a problem or just feel a bit rusty it is well worth booking a place with one of them. If you have a particular problem it is also worth asking about a private lesson, as most trainers will add on an individual lesson at the end of the day.

Pictures by Stephen Bartholomew and Spidge Photography

Always start with a simple fence

Only attempt ditches, steps and water once your horse is confidently jumping the more straightforward fences. All three should be first attempted in walk. Sit up, look up and keep your leg on. If your horse naps away, just stay calm, keep your hands fairly low in a relaxed position and just walk your horse forward. Once he is happy in walk, you can then try trot and canter. And as with the other fences once your horse is confident you can if suitable jump them from the other direction too. With the steps always go up before trying to come down. Once you have done some of the more complicated fences take your horse back over the group of fences you started with so that you finish confidently and hopefully on a good note.

NEW IN STORE... Majyk Equipe is an exciting new US protective boot brand, which is now available exclusively through premium retailers Shadow Horse here in the UK. With a strong technical focus on their protective boot collection, they incorporate advanced materials with anatomical design to achieve some of the most protective (proven through independent test results), comfortable and durable boots on the market place. The Majyk X-Country Boots are an exciting new development in boot technology, which offer excellent protection and performance without a hefty price tag.

Rodney Powell Superflex Contour Body Protector

This new, lightweight body protector has been added to the Rodney Powell range. Of block foam construction, the Superflex Contour offers superior levels of flexibility and perfect contouring of the torso, allowing body heat to quickly penetrate the foam panels for maximum comfort, which is further enhanced by the absorbent lining and breathable properties. Features include a wipe clean outer, front zip fastening and adjustment at the shoulder and waist. Approved to BETA 2009 Level 3 and EN13158.

The outer shell of the boots is made of advanced, extremely robust rip-stop material which is not only easy to clean, but also repels moisture and ‘breathes’ to allow heat generated from the leg to dispel naturally away. A generous shatter-proof TPU strike guard is also breathable while flexing with the horse’s joints, allowing further freedom of movement with excellent protection around this venerable area.

Ogilvy Friction Free X-Country Pad When riding cross-country, the last thing you need is saddle movement distracting your horse’s focus on the job in hand, which is why technical saddle pad brand Ogilvy Equestrian has created the Ogilvy Friction Free X-Country Pad. The Ogilvy Friction Free X-Country Pad incorporates some clever design details to offer your horse enhanced freedom of movement and improved comfort. Featuring a ‘High V Wither’ and shaped spinal channel, the opening at the wither doesn’t interfere with the shoulders and its design eliminates contact with the spine. Filled with hollow fill fibre, this pad also has incredible wicking properties, making it the ideal choice for the summer months or for horses that sweat during work.

Inside a ‘Hyperflex’ lining sits against the horses skin and gently conforms and moulds to the leg to allow for a snug, yet comfortable fit, which won’t slip even when wet. From £60 per pair.

The pad also absorbs friction courtesy of several internal thin layers that sit neatly between the outer layers, which helps reduce movement, even in big moving horses.

FEATURE

Preparing for the Cross Country season:

tackling terrain By riding instructor Michaela Huntington Right: On flat ground, you should be able to lengthen and shorten the pace at will.

T

he cross country season is upon us, although many of us haven’t been able to do much preparation, due to flooded arenas and harsh winter weather these past few months! One of the trickest things for all riders, whatever the level you ride at, is negotiating the different terrains and gradients encountered at hunter trials, cross country training venues and at horse trials events. On any cross country course there will be differing gradients throughout, requiring different riding techniques, together with balance and obedience from your horse. Uphill riding rarely presents problems, as the horse will naturally use himself; balance should not be lost and speed will be more easily controlled. Downhill riding will present the opposite effect, with the horse having a tendency to go on his forehand and run away with you, and balance could be lost. This is the area requiring some preparation!

Establishing transitions

Firstly, on flat ground you will need to have established transitions both upwards and downwards in trot and canter and, ideally, be able to lengthen and shorten the pace at will. Move on to terrain containing some gentle slopes where you can practise the same exercises. You will find that when riding uphill, balance is more easily obtained when you lean forward up and out of the saddle, allowing the horse freedom of movement both in his body and his head. Riding downhill will require the opposite movements of your body, depending on the severity of the slope. You will help your horse most by variances of degrees of leaning backwards, maintaining your seat in the saddle using a longer rein but keeping the contact. Initially start at trot; if the horse becomes strong and difficult to control, slow the pace to a walk, or even halt, praise him and start again. You may have to repeat the lesson several times before you are able to lengthen and shorten the pace downhill. As progress is improved you will be able to work on the same exercise in canter, moving on to longer and steeper slopes. Leg position should remain in the same place both up and downhill. Your horse should absorb his lessons and be ever more attentive to your commands as you work towards a perfect partnership.

The RS-tor The RS-tor rider safety aid is invaluable when XC training, as it gives the rider untold confidence. For downhill riding, it gives extra stability in the saddle without leaning forward, which you would do if holding the mane or a neckstrap. (It may be used in unaffiliated events and in the warm up of BE affiliated horse trials events, but not in the affiliated event itself.) until you are happy to cross any terrain and obstacle. Approach your training with common sense and logic, break up each different challenge into bite size chunks, and only progress to higher stages as each task becomes mastered - as then you and your horse will enjoy many super days together as the bond becomes stronger between you both.

Severe slopes

Severe gradients and/or bad ground conditions should be approached with caution and performed at a slower pace, even walk. Confidence building for both rider and horse is paramount; it is better to avoid a bad experience where possible, and extra time taken will pay dividends in the long run.

Jumping fences

One of the trickest aspects of XC riding is negotiating different terrains and gradients.

Jumping fences downhill can be included once you can maintain a controllable speed. Start with a simple pole on the ground with wedges or blocks to keep it in place and aim to cross it from a good, even pace. Avoid getting too close to any fence downhill, as it will be much harder for the horse to make a good shape and keep his balance, especially on landing. Your jumping position should vary from the norm, as to keep in balance with your horse, you will need to remain more upright. Alter your practise fences as you please, MARCH 2014 Localrider 43

Feeding the Mare in Preparation for Covering Words by Liz Bulbrook BSc (Hons), Director of Nutrition at Baileys Horse Feeds

further supplementation may be beneficial, although breeders should consult their vets first to determine any possible underlying clinical cause. Feeding Omega 3 oils may be of potential benefit to the mare since they are metabolised to anti-inflammatory compounds in the body and this is thought to reduce the inflammatory response in the reproductive tract directly after covering, thus increasing the chances of conception. It is, however, best to choose a specially formulated supplement designed to provide a range of nutrients that work together to support fertility.

Foal The decision to put your mare in foal is a big one so In When your mare is confirmed in foal, making sure she is well prepared will help maximise continue to maintain her balanced diet help support the development of the her chances of conceiving and help avoid costly, to foetus right from conception. Through repeat coverings or lengthy spells at stud. the summer, you may find that a specially

m

ares who are significantly over or under weight are less likely to conceive so, if your mare needs to lose or gain a lot of condition, the sooner you make the necessary adjustments to her diet the better. It is also generally accepted that a mare in work needs to be well “let down” to stand a better chance of getting in foal so, if your mare is quite fit, you will need to think of backing off the work in good time to allow her to relax and gain a little condition.

Getting Trim For the overweight mare or particularly good-doer, such as a native type, calorie intake needs to be restricted whilst still ensuring she receives a balanced diet, including protein, vitamins and minerals. In these instances a low calorie balancer is the perfect solution, ensuring the mare receives all the nutrients she needs for health and well-being without the calories. do be aware of the increasing contribution that spring grass will make to her calorie count and be prepared to restrict grazing, whilst still ensuring sufficient fibre intake,

to help the mare lose weight or avoid excessive weight gain.

Weight Gain If your mare hasn’t wintered particularly well and needs to gain condition, a specially formulated conditioning mix or cube, fed to recommendations, will promote weight gain safely and effectively. Keep an eye on her though and be ready to change her diet in order to prevent her gaining too much condition through the spring before she goes to stud. The important thing is to make sure the mare receives a fully balanced diet with all the nutrients she needs for good health. This also helps ensure that she builds up good reserves to support the planned pregnancy. If you find you need to feed less than the recommended quantities of your chosen mix or cube it will be wise to top up the nutrient levels with a balancer.

Extra Help Where a mare has fertility issues despite a good quality balanced diet, it’s possible that

formulated stud balancer will provide all the necessary nutrients. If however your mare requires more calories to maintain condition, particularly as you go in to the winter, choose a stud mix or cubes as these will also contain the additional vitamins, minerals and protein she requires to support the growing foal. do not be tempted to feed nothing or go for a low energy feed for the bulk of the pregnancy and only “pep” things up for the last trimester. Low energy also means lower nutrient levels and therefore insufficient to support a developing foetus, the dam’s good health and to help her put down nutrient stores (not necessarily fat) to draw on when the foal is born and she is lactating. The foetus also lays down stores of minerals in the liver on which it can draw once born and growing rapidly in the first weeks of life. If the mare’s diet has been lacking, these stores may be insufficient to support the growth and the potential for problems may arise. If you have any doubts, talk to a feed company helpline. Feeding for Breeding

This month we look at a range of products to aid both mares and stallions, with the ultimate aim of improving their chance of breeding a healthy foal. TopSpec Stud Feed Stallion Fertility Balancer Helped by TopSpec Stud Feed Balancer will promote superb Science - Blue muscle and skeletal development without providing excess calories resulting in overtopping. Chip Stallion The feed balancer improves the amount of SPM-20 nutrients a horse can extract from his total diet Blue chip and Stallion aI Services Ltd, the stallion semen collection centre, have been working closely for the last two years to develop a feed supplement specific to the needs of breeding stallions. The result of this collaborative research has led to the development of Blue chip Feed’s newest supplement Stallion SPm-20. Stallion SPm-20 has been formulated to get the best results where it matters- your stallion’s fertility. The two-year research study conducted by Stallion aI Services included a sample group of both fertile and sub-fertile stallions which were fed Stallion SPm-20 over a six month period, in conjunction with their existing diet. Semen samples were collected and processed for fresh, chilled and frozen artificial insemination (aI).The samples were then assessed for motility (%PLm), velocity and longevity. In addition measurements of concentration and overall viability were carried out using a Nucleocounter SP-100. Fluorescent microscopy was also used to calculate the percentage live and the overall morphology of the sample. during the study the active ingredients found in Stallion SPm-20 have demonstrated improvement on sperm motility by up to 20%, improvement on sperm velocity by up to 33% and improvement on overall sperm viability by up to 24%. Throughout product testing, improvements have been seen on both fertile and sub-fertile stallions and proven effective on semen for fresh, chilled and frozen aI. Stallion SPm-20 aids in ensuring that the sperm travel quickly through the mare’s reproductive system to the oocyte (egg). Whilst improving sperm viability, ensuring that the sperm cell membrane remains intact throughout its journey through the mare’s reproductive system to the oocyte (egg). Blue chip Stallion SPm-20 is made with the highest quality ingredients with a 100% natural formulation and includes organic Zinc, which is known to be a vital component of the sperm’s protective formation, organic copper which is shown to have direct links to both semen quality and libido, and organic Selenium which is essential in the production of testosterone and is essential for normal sexual development. www.bluechipfeed.com

Protexin Gut Bind Gut Bind comes in an easy to use 30ml syringe and is a two day course of probiotics, prebiotics, kaolin and pectin designed to settle a foal’s disrupted gut. Gut Bind is ideal for use on foals from day one to alleviate any scouring problems. It is also suitable for horses of any age. With a highly palatable peppermint flavour the main ingredients provide the following support; Protexin probiotics help re-establish the normal hindgut microflora, Preplex® prebiotics nourish the beneficial bacteria, kaolin is a natural binding agent to firm up faeces, and pectin helps to soothe the gut lining. www.equinepremium.com

meaning that breeding stock can receive optimum nutrition from reduced levels of hard feed, with many resulting benefits. TopSpec Stud Feed Balancer greatly improves hoof, skin and coat quality, whilst helping to maintain appetite, moderating the effects of stress on horses and helping to maintain a healthy immune system. TopSpec Stud Feed Balancer contains the following features:• Optimum amounts of all the micronutrients needed to complement feed intake and allow broodmares and youngstock to reach their maximum potential. • excellent quality protein and intracellular soya oil. • concentrated levels of added micronutrients, including chelated minerals for improved availability. • Powerful levels of Vitamin e and selenium, vital antioxidants, important for fertility and muscle function. • effective levels of amino acids, vitamins, minerals and trace elements to develop and maintain strong bone and superb muscle. • The scientifically proven levels of Biotin (15mg/500kg horse/day), and associated nutrients, to improve hoof and coat quality and skin conditions. • Two advanced yeast products to help optimise fibre digestion in the hindgut and remove gut pathogens. www.topspec.com

Saracen Horse Feeds Stallion Plan Keeping a stallion in top condition can be a juggling act, especially if he is competing and performing stud duties. To help combat this, Saracen Horse Feeds have a specially formulated diet in their stud range, Stallion Plan. Stallion Plan has been formulated using the most recent research advances in stallion reproduction. Carnitine is included as research shows that it increases progressive sperm motility by over 50%. There is a properly balanced ratio of Omega-6 to Omega-3 fatty acids - this has the potential to affect not only sperm quality but sperm quantity. Powerful antioxidants are provided in the form of natural vitamin E, selenium and DHA, which together help create an environment ideal for sperm production, protection and function. DHA in particular has been shown to increase the ability of semen to tolerate the stresses related to cold shock caused by cooling or freezing, now a common procedure amongst modern breeders. Zinc has also been included for its known involvement in healthy male reproduction, and Copper, which has been shown to have a direct link to libido and semen quality, is also featured. Stallion Plan is fortified with optimal concentrations of supporting vitamins and minerals to promote stallion health and performance during covering, and the off-season. The feed contains Stamm 30® for nutrient continuity. As the breeding season approaches, Stallion Plan can be introduced between 60 and 90 days before the season begins. It takes that period of time for the sperm to be manufactured within the male reproductive glands and then become available to fertilize the mare. www.saracenhorsefeeds.com

Feed news NAF Mare, Foal & Youngstock Supplement

other feed news

Nutrition is one of the most important aspects when raising youngstock. It cannot be emphasised enough how important a constant, balanced diet is for the healthy development of the foal, to avoid growth spurts and maintain a smooth, even growth pattern. Balanced nutrition means everything to the youngster. This is why NAF developed Mare, Foal & Youngstock Supplement, a broad spectrum vitamin and mineral supplement, which provides Calcium and Phosphorous in the correct ratio for bone development, with Zinc and Iron present to ensure absorption of those nutrients into the bone. Copper is added for healthy cartilage formation, Vitamin E and Lysine are also included, the former, to support healthy muscle development, and the later, the first limiting amino acid in the equine diet, to ensure protein is properly utilised. Feeding Mare, Foal & Youngstock Supplement as directed, to the mare and the foal, will ensure the correct micro-nutrient, vitamin and mineral levels are provided for optimum development of the foal. Providing the mare with this nutritional support prior to foaling will enable her to feed the necessary nutrient levels to her foal through her milk. NAF recommend Mare, Foal & Youngstock Supplement is fed daily to the pregnant mare especially during her final three months before foaling through to weaning, and, to the foal up until four years of age.

Winter can limit turnout and exercise opportunities, whatever the weather, so many horses have their hard feed cut back to avoid excessive weight gain or over excitement. This is fine to control calorie intake and energy levels but will also mean that levels of essential nutrients are cut back at the same time. Baileys Lo-Cal balancer is the perfect way to ensure that dietary nutrient levels are maintained but without the calories of a traditional mix or cube. Lo-Cal can be added to reduced amounts of hard feed to provide essential protein, vitamins and minerals to support muscle tone, health and well-being as well as consistent quality hoof growth. This season’s forage has proven far more nutritious than that of the previous two seasons so real good-doers on lengthier spells of confinement or reduced workload may even need their hay or haylage rationing. Using small-holed nets will slow consumption, while soaking forage for 12 hours will wash out soluble nutrients. Lo-Cal balancer can be fed as the sole concentrate to good-doers so the diet can remain fully balanced yet still calorie-controlled.

Lifeforce Formula Ensuring your mare is provided with the best possible nutrition can have a huge impact on the growth and development of a newborn foal. Newborn foals rely on their mother’s colostrum in the milk for nutrients for growth, as well as establishing a healthy immune system. By ensuring the correct balance of nutrients for the mare you can maximise the quality of the colostrum in the milk which in turn supports optimum growth and vitality of the foal. Adding live yeast cultures to hard feed has long been associated with increasing fibre digestion; however, the impact of live yeast has greater benefits for the pregnant mare and her newborn foal. Higher milk yields (+5–15%) and nutrient content (more energy and protein) have been demonstrated in horses supplemented with live yeast and foals receiving milk from these supplemented mares tend to grow more quickly than those from un-supplemented dams. Lifeforce Formula the supplement from Alltech, the experts in equine digestive health, is specially designed for breeding horses and leisure horses in moderate activity. Alltech®, the title sponsor of the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games™ 2014 in Normandy, France has developed the LIFEFORCE Range of all-natural daily digestive aid supplements. These products are designed to benefit horses at every stage of life, from breeding stock to pleasure and performance animals.

Choose high fibre and timothy horsehage for Laminitics

T

here is often a misconception that horsehage is rich in energy and therefore unsuitable for horses and ponies prone to laminitis. This is not the case with the high Fibre and Timothy varieties of horsehage. Forage can vary in quality as well as nutritional composition. Some batches of hay can contain large amounts of sugar – as much as 10% - whereas with horsehage sugar levels are only around 5%, due to its unique fermentation process. high Fibre horsehage is made from ryegrass but in this particular variety, the ryegrasses have been allowed to mature before harvesting to attain higher fibre, lower protein and lower energy levels. This means it is very different from ordinary haylages made from ryegrass and makes it an excellent choice for laminitics, good doers and horses and ponies that are convalescing or resting. The same low protein and energy levels are found in Timothy horsehage which is made from timothy grass and is very similar to the famous Kentucky bluegrass of america. It is already naturally high in fibre and because it has a different ‘nose’ to ryegrass, horses find it very appetising, so it’s a great choice for fussy feeders. as well as the low sugar and energy benefits making high Fibre and Timothy horsehage safe to feed to laminitics, these bagged forages are also dust-free – an essential quality to avoid causing serious respiratory problems such as raO. They contain no chemical additives, mould inhibitors or inoculants – just natural grass – and are more digestible than other forages allowing more efficient utilisation of the available nutrients. In other words, your horse or pony will get more nutritional value from this type of forage, which may enable you to cut down on his hard feed. even better, because horsehage is so appetising, there is rarely any waste. horsehage is BeTa FemaS NOPS certified which means it is produced from specially-grown grass with a high regard for feed safety, consistent quality and full product traceability, so you know exactly what your horse or pony is being fed. horsehage has devised a special diet especially for laminitics called ‘The hoofKind diet’. Feed either high Fibre and/or Timothy horsehage alongside mollichaff hoofKind, which is a great value, complete feed specially formulated for horses and ponies prone to laminitis. When fed at the recommended levels, it contains all the vitamins and minerals your laminitic horse or pony needs to keep him healthy.

Feed news

Feeding & Managing the Laminitic Horse or Pony Dr Tom Shurlock of British Horse Feeds talks us through feeding and managing the laminitic... We know that feeding a low sugar, high fibre diet is right for laminitics, but why? The problem is not sugar. Fibre is made up of sugar. Sugars are converted to glucose, the single most important energy provider in any species. Fibre is fermented in the hindgut, generating volatile fatty acids (VFa) one of which (Propionic) is converted to glucose in the body. The problem is the amount. There is a limit to what is broken down enzymatically and absorbed in the small intestine. absorbed sugars are utilised or stored immediately. The rest pass into the hindgut. The hindgut is populated with a range of different microbes, many of which can utilise the sugars in fibre. Fibre fermentation, producing VFa, maintains the neutrality of the hindgut, which is right for those fibre fermenters. If the hindgut receives too much sugar, other bacteria that can utilise them will grow and flourish. as they do they create a micro-environment that encourages their growth at the expense of the “normal” population. Other species can exploit this new environment; the result is normal microflora balance is skewed and the environment becomes increasingly acidic, further pushing the balance in favour of the new populations. Large amounts of starch initiate laminitis by being fermented to lactic acid. Lactic is absorbed and only slowly metabolised to glucose in the liver. While circulating in the blood stream it causes a change in the ph of the blood and releases oxygenating free radicals at the extremities (where blood supply is limiting) causing inflammation. In the horse the predominant place is the lamella of the hooves. however there are other factors. high levels of protein entering the hindgut will, in an acidic environment, be fermented to nitrogenous compounds. It has been shown that some cause vaso-constriction, limiting blood removal, especially in the

legs. This compounds problems caused by high lactate, reducing the flushing by fresh blood. Over-feeding a horse, supplying too much starch and protein, is a major cause of laminitis. It explains why spring grass, high in fructans and protein is such a problem; winter grass can be higher in fructans, if short cropped, but is not accompanied by high protein. Therefore the rule in feeding the laminitic horse is to ensure the intake of starch/ sugars and protein is not too high. The protein requirement for activity is only marginally higher than maintenance, and feeding extra to an active horse is not advisable.

How much is too much? For starch, how much is over feeding? recommendations, based on research, are that a normal horse should not eat more than four grams of starch (or total sugars) for each kilogram of live weight, two for a laminitic. This equates approximately to a ration of 10% starch and sugars. It is possible to choose feeds that are low in starch, low in protein and high in fibre. But this can be a hidden danger. The profile of the fibre is also important. Fibre is the term for carbohydrates that have a different bonding to starch, sucrose etc. These bonds are only broken by microbes. although most end products are the VFa, there are others, including lactic and so knowing the relative profiles is useful. This is why fructans can be a problem. Too high a level, and incomplete fermentation will take place, resulting in a build up of glucose and fructose – and these can fuel those bacteria that lead to population change and the wrong hindgut environment. For more information on FibreBeet or Speedi-Beet please contact British Horse Feeds on 01765 680300 or visit www.britishhorsefeeds.com

Feeding the laminitic isn’t complicated and can be achieved if these simple rules are followed: • Keep the daily intake of sugar/ starch below 10%. • Don’t over feed protein. A daily intake of 12% will suffice, even for the most active animal.

A

• Avoid raw starch. Bruising or crushing does not markedly improve digestibility, but micronizing does. • Think about which fibre alternatives should be used. Unmolassed sugar beet, alfalfa, soya hulls and oat hay give good VFA proportions, with unmolassed sugar beet giving the lowest lactic level. • Avoid too high an intake of fructans. We know about spring grass, but winter grass, if close cropped, can have higher levels as fructans are stored at the base of the grass stem, in preparation of spring. Consider fertilising a pasture. Growth stimulation will deplete fructans and “dilute” protein levels per unit grown. • Feed a product recommended for laminitics. These have been researched to encompass the above points and will help maintain the correct hindgut environment, ensuring those bacteria that can cause harm will not be able to grow.

Laminitis

There are unprecedented levels of laminitis this spring, partly owing to the wet ground and also the mild winter, which has allowed the grass to keep growing. Here we look at some of the products specifically designed to ease the management of the laminitic horse or pony. TopSpec AntiLam TopSpec AntiLam is a pelleted multisupplement designed to provide 5-way nutritional support for those prone to, being treated for, or recovering from laminitis. It is used and recommended by nutritionists, vets and farriers and it has proved highly successful for thousands of horses and ponies. Most overweight ponies, and some overweight horses, are susceptible to laminitis. AntiLam is a brilliant formulation combining several supplements with a highfibre, very low-calorie carrier to make it palatable. The formulation includes a broadspectrum supplement, a hoof supplement, a pure, protected yeast to improve fibre digestibility and MOS (mannan oligosaccharides) to support the function of the yeast and to boost the immune system. Generous levels of anti-oxidants help to neutralise the free-radicles that are increased by stress. Long-term trials at Middle Park Laminitis Research Unit have shown that horses and ponies on restricted/poor grazing do not gain any weight when fed AntiLam. This means that it can also be used very successfully as part of a calorie-controlled diet when weight loss is required. This unique multi-supplement is so palatable that it can be fed out of the hand to horses and ponies at pasture to provide vital nutritional support. www.topspec.com

HaySoft Timothy With spring fast approaching many owners will find their horses and ponies putting on weight and some may suffer from laminitis. To help prevent laminitis, horses and ponies which are prone to the condition should be fed a quality forage which is lower in calories, but still meets nutritional requirements. HaySoft Timothy is the newest product to be added to the premium HaySoft range and will help stop your horse or pony bursting out of the weigh tape. Made from the very best timothy grass, HaySoft Timothy is a tasty lower calorie haylage. Extremely palatable and easy to digest, HaySoft Timothy has a high fibre and low protein content, making it ideal for horses and ponies who struggle with being over-weight or who suffer from laminitis. High in calcium (with a favourable calcium-tophosphorous ratio) and vitamins A and D, HaySoft Timothy is packed with essential nutrients, without the calories. HaySoft Timothy has a low moisture content making it less susceptible to mould and is tightly packaged into three easy to manage sections. The haylage undergoes HaySoft’s dust extraction process ensuring it is dust free, preventing horses and owners from being exposed to potentially harmful dust and mould spores. www.haysoft.co.uk

KM Elite Grazing Muzzle The KM Elite Deluxe Padded Grazing Muzzle helps limit grass intake and is perfect for horses or ponies that are prone to laminitis. It is made from pliable rubber for added comfort, making the mask softer yet tougher. There is also padding on the head strap for extra comfort. Made from tough, field tested rubber. Fully adjustable. Available in Small Pony, Large Pony, Cob, Full and XL. www.kmeliteproducts.co.uk

Easy Pack’s Timothy and Meadow Haylage With grazing greatly reduced it’s important to maintain your horse’s requirement for forage. Easy Pack’s Timothy and Meadow Haylage is the ideal forage for you horse. With its fresh smell and taste it will be as if he is grazing out in his own paddock, while providing essential fibre and nutrients to keep your horse happy and in top condition. www.easypackhaylage.com

The Underweight Laminitic For horses that are prone to laminitis it is important to try to avoid using cereals in the diet. However, when fibre alone is insufficient to meet the energy requirements, especially in poor doers, oil should be added to the diet. This provides a much safer alternative than cereal based feeds. With a very high oil content but with no cereals and with a very low starch and sugar level Solution Mash from the Soft ‘n’ Soak Range has been specifically designed for horses that need a higher calorie diet for conditioning and controlled weight gain, whilst being ideal for horses that suffer from laminitis. Being very high in fibre this helps to encourage slow rates of digestion throughout the hindgut, with added Yeasacc 1026 helping support optimum fibre and mineral digestion. Natural herbs spearmint, garlic and fenugreek are included along with all the essential nutrients required for a fully balanced diet. www.rowenbarbary.co.uk

NAF Laminaze Improved Laminaze has been reformulated so that the unique, totally natural formula now has increased benefits. Whilst supplying nutrients to support the health of the hoof and those rich in antioxidants to flush excess toxins out from the system, improved Laminaze offers additional nutritional support specifically for the health of the gut. So the good news is, if your horse or pony is prone to laminitis you can make an important contribution towards improving his diet by ensuring new Laminaze is part of his daily feed. Top Tip: If you know your horse or pony is prone to laminitis, NAF recommend you introduce Laminaze into his diet in good time prior to the particularly high risk period of spring and the appearance of the new lush spring grass – this will help to prepare his system, and importantly, make sure Laminaze is well established as an integral part of the feed and management regime. www.naf-equine.eu/uk

id you know that vets are now so worried about resistance and the over use of wormers that they want to change the licensing rules so that you can only buy wormers from them? No more popping along to your local merchant or handily ordering on the internet. None of us want that to happen so it’s more important than ever that everyone uses only the minimum number of doses needed for good worm control. Wormers are already prescription only products, but currently the licence allows them to be sold by vets, pharmacists and SQP’s in tack shops and feed merchants. This would change. To further underline the gravity of the situation, manufacturers are no longer allowed to advertise wormers. have you noticed that wormer adverts have disappeared from magazines? Worm control is such an important aspect of horse care and should be based on worm count results for much of the year using three or four tests, only worming if necessary, plus a winter dose to cover encysted redworm and tapeworm, neither of which can be reliably detected in a test. couple with good management and poo-picking to form the base for worm control in a healthy adult horse. father figure

The behind the scenes hero… Tony Deacon

Any successful equestrian will tell you that the key to success is a great back up team, be it a trainer, sponsor or family member there are just some people we cannot be without. In this continuing series we meet ‘the dads’, so important and so supportive, but very rarely known. Tony Deacon, not only successfully runs his own company but he’s also one very successful groom (just one of his many roles) for his twenty-one-year old daughter, Kristy-Marie. With the support of Tony, Kristy-Marie has built up a successful string of show jumping prospects and is a joint director of Team Manhattan Equestrian.

Kristy and Promise

Name: Tony Deacon Home town: New Barn, Longfield Occupation: Owner of Solutions Critical, a major sporting event planning company. How did you become involved with horses? I bribed my little girl to move house with the promise of riding lessons at the stables opposite the new house when she was aged five.

Tony on Pye and Kristy on Promise at Judd Farm

Do you ride yourself? Yes, if my horse lets me. Favourite horse or pony and why? Pye because we’re best mates and we’ve been together 10 years. He now jumps 1m 60 cm, but I can only jump 1m. I leave the other 60 cm to Kristy-Marie. What area of the sport are you involved with? Stable hand, truck driver, groom, second jockey, show trainer, consoler, congratulater, photographer, financial help, first aider when it all goes wrong. Also picker upper of poles, poo and fallen riders! How do you support your family with their sport? Love, time and enthusiasm. What’s the best thing about competing? Kristy-Marie’s face when she wins. What’s the worst thing about competing? Staying away from home with the horses as it normally means a long journey, late night and tired horses. What was your proudest moment when watching your child compete? When KristyMarie jumped three clear rounds to qualify for the National Discovery finals at Scope.

Tony and Pye

Favourite show ground snack? A low calorie fresh salad… if there isn’t any bacon rolls going. How do you and your family like to celebrate a big win? A Chinese and a bottle of wine. Not forgetting lots of carrots for the horses. Favourite show ground and why? Felbridge due to the amounts of success we’ve had there. What do your friends think about what you and your family do? Mostly they like keeping up with all the news of what Team Manhattan are doing and love seeing the pictures and videos from the shows.
