ebruary might be the shortest month of the year, but you have still all managed to get out and about, finding exciting things to do with your horses. We have some great reports from Pony Club Show Jumping, Pony Club Dressage, Cross Country Training as well as a round-up of the season so far for the Kent & Surrey Bloodhounds. When I can, I love leaving the office to report from events and chat to readers. One of my favourite trips this month was to meet Phil Middleton at his yard in Buckinghamshire. You may be wondering why I travelled so far, but Phil runs the Sussex-based supplement company, Equine America and once you see the pictures (see page 14), you will understand why it was worth the journey. Phil is a colourful character, who seems to have been blessed with good fortune throughout his life. Now semi-retired he trains National Hunt horses under a Permit Licence and is having a particularly good season. One which might see Exitas run at the Cheltenham Festival and Tales of Milan head to Aintree for the Grand National. Our local jockeys and trainers are having a real purple patch at present and to catch up with more local results and action, turn to page 32. March is the time to start planning what you are going to do over the coming months and we hope you will find some exciting shows and events in our Show Dates Guide on page 64. We also have a comprehensive guide on where to go cross country schooling (page 46). It is amazing how many different venues there are in the South East and I look forward to visiting a few more this season. Have fun and remember to stay in touch!

This gorgeous shirt in Pure White is from the Freddie Parker ‘Cheltenham Ladies Collection’. Paying homage to the stylish race-going ladies who flock to this great city it focuses on feminine shirting with fashion tailoring. Family Day Out at Horse Trials The South of England Horse Trials, held over the weekend of 11th & 12th April make a great day out for all of the family. Come and watch some of the country’s leading horses and riders in action. Saturday is the Novice Day and Sunday sees the Open action. There are trade stands, catering plus a licenced bar or why not pack a picnic and make a day of it. Previous years have seen Pippa Funnell, Tina Cook, Francis Whittington, Gemma Tattersall and Emily Llewellyn competing on a number of horses.

Give It The Boot Just over eight years ago, two dog walkers/horse owners returned home to wrestle with taking off their muddy wellies. Then a simple boot remover, (pull or jack) changed their lives. Soon they thought how nice it would be for others to get their wellies off so easily and Give It The Boot was born. Rebecca Hatch said: “We provide boot jacks with fantastic designs for individuals, we also design and supply boot jacks with custom graphics applied; for great company promotions.” www.giveittheboot.com LR Comment: This is a small lightweight boot jack, which is quick and simple to use. It is great for taking to shows and doesn’t take up much space when not in use.

Coping with allergies Do you itch, sneeze or wheeze around horses, cats, hay, straw or bedding? Do your eyes and nose stream with hay fever, from trees, flowers, grass pollen or oilseed rape? Then the chances are you have an allergy or possibly multiple allergies. Many allergies can now be sorted using The Boulderstone Technique. First they do an allergy test to find out which pollens, animals or food you are reacting to. Then, working with the specific pollens or sample of animal hair or bedding, they can guide your reactions to it until the body has learned not to over-react to the triggers. Only two or three treatment sessions are usually needed to completely resolve the problem and to stop you having further symptoms of hay fever or other allergies. The technique has yielded excellent results over the last 20 years. For more information call 01892 544381or visit www.boulderstonetechnique.com As recommended by our editor

Chilham Castle BE Horse Trials Preparations are well underway for the first Chilham Castle BE event, which takes place over the weekend of 2nd & 3rd May 2015, with entries opening on Thursday 26th March. With classes from BE80 training to an impressive Novice course, riders will be rapidly entering to secure their place. Ali Ferry, Organiser said: “It’s a lot of hard work, but I have a great team and we get so many good comments from competitors; we know we’re doing something right.” The bedrock of any event will always be local riders from the South East and many return year-after-year to Chilham drawn by the expertly built courses; beautiful surroundings and friendly atmosphere. Once again, they’ve included the BE80 and BE90 classes which offer an introductory entry into the sport of eventing. Both BE Members and non-members can enter these classes which will run on Saturday 2nd May. The Day Ticket scheme operated by BE allows non-members to enter BE events: “It’s very gratifying to hear that so many local riders buy Day Tickets specifically to use at Chilham. Our training courses are very important to us, competitors receive the full BE package and run on professional built and designed BE courses, and its great fun naturally!” With all classes full last year and spaces at a premium, Chilham have a very active Volunteer Priority scheme with full details on their website. To find out more information on eventing at Chilham visit www.chilhampark.co.uk or details of the Day Ticket scheme can be found on the British Eventing website www.britisheventing.com

Eventing returns to Hickstead The Directors of the All England Jumping Course are delighted to announce a return of the class for this season, with a new and exciting format. The Amlin Plus Eventers’ Challenge will be held on the Thursday of the Longines Royal International Horse Show (28 July – 2 August). The class will now be kept within the arena and only event riders will be eligible to compete, which will allow the cross-country fences to become more technical and demanding. “Lots of equestrian fans were upset by the loss of the former Eventing Grand Prix class, so we’re very pleased to be launching the Eventers’ Challenge in its place,” says Hickstead Director Lizzie Bunn. Hickstead tickets are on sale now. To purchase, visit www.hickstead.co.uk or call 01273 834315.

NEWS Do you hold your Pony Club A Test?

D

o you hold your Pony Club A Test? Would you like to help The Pony Club celebrate this iconic Test and share your experiences with others? Then The Pony Club want to hear from you. The Pony Club Training Committee is seeking past and present Members who have achieved their A Test, to attend a special celebration event, including a gala dinner and training day, during 22nd - 23rd June 2015. Over 1500 people hold the prestigious Pony Club A Test, and although detailed records have been kept of those who have passed the Test, many from the earlier years do not have contact details and hence The Pony Club Training Committee want to spread the word that they want to hear from anyone who holds the Test and find out more about what it means to them. It is hoped that the celebration event will act as an opportunity to meet other A Test holders, network, and share their experiences both from within the equestrian industry and beyond; as well as being a celebration for those who have achieved the pinnacle of The Pony Club’s training system. As the majority of the Training Committee are A Test holders themselves they also understand that those who hold the Test are fantastic examples of potential future Committee members and contributors, who could help to drive the training ethos of all-round horsemanship and care forward for The Pony Club in the years to come. Visit ‘The Pony Club A Test Reunion’ Facebook page or www.pcuk.org/training for further details and booking.

The Fab Four Get ready for the show ring, with the NAF Fab Four. Show Off – for all the dirty ponies in the world, who would really like to be clean and smart. Muck Off – Stubborn stable stains mean nothing to this powerful formula. A little spray on the stain will lift it clean away. Shine On – If your horse or pony needs that little extra sparkle to get noticed in the ring, spray Shine On all over his coat. It is great for manes and tails too.

more. Gillian Booth SQP and owner at Westgate Labs said: “By using tests instead of routine worming you will save giving many unnecessary doses to your horse. I can’t emphasise strongly enough how important this is. Every time the worms are exposed to a worming drug the most resistant strains will not be killed. Instead they go on to reproduce and create a bigger population of resistant worms so that the wormers gradually get less and less effective. There is already some resistance to every drug we use to treat our horses. What will we do in the future when there is nothing left to use on the wormy horses who need treating? A very scary thought indeed. Don’t be lured into thinking it is ‘tapeworm time’ either. There is now a perfectly good saliva test which you can use to find out whether your horse needs dosing and about 75% do not need it. Contact us today to start routine testing, it’s very easy to do and much better for all our horses.” For more information call 01670 791994 or visit www.westgatelabs.co.uk

SEIB has a strong ethos of putting something back into equestrian sport and the company takes an enthusiastic interest in all the competitions they sponsor. The SEIB Search for a Star series has helped many horses to go on to a very successful show ring career, with some competitors going on to win open classes at HOYS. Each qualifying competition follows the same format, with classes for Working Hunters, Riding Club Show Horses, Riding Horse/Hacks, Show Hunters, Cobs and Show Ponies & Show Hunter Ponies. Search for a Star Judges, Richard Ramsay and David Bartram have many years’ experience in the show ring and are very helpful. There is always an opportunity after each class to speak with the judges who will offer advice on how to improve your horse for the show ring. Leading equine Insurance brokers, SEIB provide cover for horses, horse boxes, yards and much more. “The Search for a Star Championship series is a way to give amateur riders the chance to achieve their dream of riding at The Horse of the Year Show. The Original Rug Bag Janette Perrett of the Original Rug Bag Company said: “I had wanted a Rug Bag to protect my rugs for years ever since I bought my first rug rail in 2003. In 2011 I decided to make my own and a friend who makes curtains helped me make my first Rug Bag. I made many design changes and lots of mistakes before I got it right and I rigorously tested it in my own stables and tack room for over a year to make sure it does what it’s designed to do. New June Date for Cranleigh Show Cranleigh Show will be held this year on the Summer Solstice, 21st June, in a radical move away from its traditional August slot and entries are now open. The change was prompted by the increasingly crowded late summer calendar, with a host of conflicting public and sporting events, and the June date is already looking to be a good choice as traders and competitors have responded with enthusiasm. From leading rein ponies to retired racehorses – equines of all sizes, shapes, ages and colours will find a competition to suit them and their riders. Entries are open now. This year sees the return of non-affiliated show jumping and the popular clear round jumping, and many of the showing classes are qualifiers for Ponies UK, CHAPS, the Veteran Horse Society, Donkey Breed Society and Arab Horse Society championships. Ridden hunters, heavy horses, mountain and moorland, ex racehorses and hunters, cobs and veterans, sports horses, riding club horses and family ponies all have their own classes. Entries opened 6th February and close on 11th June. Go to www.cranleighshow.org.uk for a schedule or email the secretary at info@cranleighshow.org.uk with your full address. Entries can be taken on-line. Discounts on show tickets are available for early bookings at www.cranleighshow.co.uk

Learn the EMMETT Technique in Lamberhurst The EMMETT Technique is a unique form of body therapy. It involves the application of light finger pressure at specific points, referred to as “Emmett Points”. The points are not the same as traditional trigger points or acupressure points or any other points described in any other therapy. The pressure required to stimulate the Emmett points does not need to be firm or painful. “No pain no gain” has no place in EMMETT Technique philosophy. The EMMETT Technique is growing in popularity around the world and is known to be a safe and simple non-invasive muscle release therapy used to address pain and discomfort along with improving restrictions in movement. The EMMETT Technique Therapist can be compared to a body electrician who has the knowledge to locate these critical points and re-set them with the correct stimulation. The stimulation is registered by the receiver’s nervous system and their brain responds by sending new instructions back to the physical state of the localised area. The result of an EMMETT treatment is often instantaneous physical change An EMMETT session improves recovery from tough training sessions helping horses achieve peak performance, along with addressing lameness, saddle soreness, uneven gait and lack of performance. Tony Sherry is running courses in Lamberhurst, Kent throughout 2015, with Level 1 training taking place on Thursday 14th & Friday 15th May. TOP TIPS

1

For juniors, look out for soft fabrics that won’t irritate gentle skin, and garments that have a good shape. 100% cotton is a good choice for staying cool when it heats up.

Spring fever 100% Cotton Tshirts for kids are ideal for warmer days

Words by Lucy Nicholas of www.thesaddleryshop.co.uk

D

uring early spring, wet weather can often dominate the UK forecasts, and on-going rain and mud can really get us down in the dumps; yet many of us still want to look fabulous in the saddle and at the yard. So whether you are searching for a lightweight, rainproof jacket or getting excited for warmer weather and trying to find that ultimate colour co-ordinated, goes-witheverything polo shirt, we have the best suggestions for your spring wardrobe.

Spring savvy

When shopping for equestrian clothing during the changeable spring weather, the best way to stay at an ambient temperature is to utilise a layering system. Layering your clothing can help you to keep warm, dry and comfortable through varying conditions, allowing you to add or remove layers, depending on how you feel and the conditions you’re in. Base-layer long sleeved t shirts are a good choice - they are supposed to fit the body closely to keep heat in, and look good with a polo shirt worn over the top.

2

These months are still changeable, weather-wise – so it is sensible to sport breathable, technical fabrics that work to keep you warm, if layering, and also cool you down.

3

Choose hard-wearing garments we obviously wash our equestrian apparel extensively, so good quality items will last many washes.

2015 sees a move away from brights to pastels and understated tones like this coral hoodie Checked cotton shirts with flattering slim-fits are surprisingly cool, and fashionforward

4

It’s not finished raining yet! So waterproof and wind-proof gear that can withstand the elements is a good investment purchase. Lightweight jackets are useful as they can roll up into a small space and be popped into a small rucksack or saddle bag when riding.

5 6

Don’t be afraid to show off your socks - there are some striking designs available. There are many bargains to be had in March, as spring arrives and the stores stock their summer ranges; especially online, where good quality winter items may be reduced in price. www.thesaddleryshop.co.uk stocks various leading outdoor and equestrian brands, including some of the items pictured here; the internet is the ideal place to shop for the family wardrobe.

Funky socks in pastel colours are set to be popular this spring

Spring colours

Fashion and colour experts Pantone predict that the trends this year will be a move towards the cooler and softer side of the colour spectrum, with an eclectic mix of understated plain colours, with pale pastels and nature-like neutrals. This colour-wheel is something the equestrian industry has been planning for, with the many brands showcasing pastel colours in 2015, after a few years of bolder colours. Even kids clothing is getting in on the ‘softer’ action, with lots of pale blues and coral hues.

Patterns

One thing we know will be popular is checked cotton shirts, for a subtle nod towards western riding. This scarf with Choose one with a horse motifs flattering slim-fit, for will work with a fashion-forward look any outfit, but that takes you from stable to shops especially jeans or school run with ease. Motif T-shirts for children are popular, some with a retro-twist. And those with pictures of horses on them somehow manage to look modern and fresh, without being too ‘twee’. The same goes for horse motifs on ladies clothes - we have all seen the beautiful accessories lately with zebras and owls bedecking them; 2015 is no exception, although it is the understated horse print that you will see everywhere this year, from polo tops to scarves. The one we have pictured here is also the perfect example of the colour palette that will prove popular in 2015. MARCH 2015 Localrider 25

lanmurfin Jerri and his rider Lauren Davis both found themselves battling with adversity last year. Jerri’s performance was on a downward spiral, but neither the vet nor his regular chiropractor could diagnose why. With great scepticism Lauren’s mother Claire called on the help of Animal Communicator, Anne Dee. After Anne and Jerri had a chat, she believed the Welsh section C was suffering from the equine form of sciatica and need physiotherapy. “Obviously we didn’t advise the physiotherapist,” Claire said “but she went straight to the problem area and after a couple of weeks Jerri could start work again.” Around the same time Lauren collapsed without explanation whilst playing football. Now recovered from the incident, she is once again playing for Brighton Football Club, she even climbed Mount Kinabalu, whilst in Borneo last summer participating in project work. With the pair both back on form, they had a busy season in the show ring. At the SMP Events Halloween Show they won two Working Hunter Pony classes and stood Champion. “I was delighted to have them both back on form,” said Claire. At the SMP Christmas show, Lauren and Jerri won the Working Hunter Pony Championship before standing Supreme of the Show. Image Lauren Davis and Llanmurfin Jerri

Running for Egyptian Horse Charity There are things in life that jump Claire Young out and make one want to make a difference. Discovering the pictures below of an emaciated mare called Asfoora on Facebook, competition groom Claire Young, decided to help raise money by running the Brighton Marathon. Claire said: “I have been very lucky in my life to work with some amazing riders and horses, groomed at some amazing places, Badminton, Burghley and Olympia to name just a few, and it was while I was working for Surrey based international dressage rider Amy Stovold, that I came across a horse charity called, Prince Fluffy Kareem (PFK). I was scrolling through my Facebook one evening after returning home from World Class training, and there was what I can only be described as a skeleton of a horse. I presumed she was another RSPCA case, but no this was Asfoora a horse that had just been rescued by PFK and who today looks a million dollars. Egypt is a very poor country that relies heavily on tourism. Sadly due to the political upheaval tourists are not visiting and many people are struggling to feed their children let alone their animals. This is where PFK comes in, fostering, providing veterinary care and education. They are a very small charity and can have up to 70 horses in their care, not to mention camels, donkeys, cats and dogs. So I decided to help them by running the Brighton Marathon, with the aim of raising £1,300, enough to pay for one horse for one year. Please check out their Facebook page for more information.” To find out more about sponsoring my run, please visit www.givey.com/sponsorthefluffies

The sport of kings

re you an avid polo player, or would like to take up this exhilarating, exciting game? Polo was once thought of to be solely an elitist sport, but in recent years the sport has become more popular and available to the masses. These days, group polo lessons including a hired pony are offered by many clubs, giving the amateur polo player the chance to experience the fabulous sport. Polo is thought to have originated in China and Persia around 2,000 years ago and today, it is now played by men and women alike in upwards of 77 countries. In the South East, there are over 25 clubs, including Epsom Polo Club, Ascot Park Polo Club, Hurtwood Park Polo Club, Ham Polo Club and Sussex Polo Club. Polo Times magazine has a useful link of South East based clubs at its site www.polotimes.co.uk

The game

Polo is played between four person teams, on a field which is 300 yards long and 160 yards wide. There are goals at each end line, spaced eight yards apart. Each players carries a slender handled mallet, and attempts to hit the ball through the goal posts; each goal counts one point. The outdoor ball, of hard white plastic, amazingly is a little over 3” in diameter, so the game really does take some serious hand-eye coordination. The players are designated an attack or a defence role, and each has the job of furthering their own goal tally, whilst preventing the other side from scoring. The line of the ball is a “right of way” established by the path of the travelling ball; the player who last struck the ball has the right of way. Riding alongside a player with the right of way is permitted, but hindering their way is not. Teams change ends after each goal is scored, to account for any wind advantage which may exist in play. The game is played in six fast paced periods, known as chukkas, which take seven and a half minutes. Polo can also be played indoors, known as Arena Polo, which is popular during the winter months.

egan Clark is one of the finalists in the David Nicholson Newcomers Award, part of the Stud and Stable Staff Awards sponsored by Godolphin. After two thorough judging stages, the 12-strong Panel of Judges has whittled the 200 plus nominations down to three finalists in each category. All the finalists are now guaranteed a share in the £120,000 prize money, with every penny they win being matched and shared amongst their yard. Tegan was nominated for this award by her Trainer, Olly Stevens. She joined his racing yard in Chiddingfold, Surrey two years ago. Coming from polo, Tegan had to adjust her style of riding to enable her to ride racehorses. Her employer, Olly Stevens said: “I cannot imagine there is a newcomer of only two year’s experience that has achieved what Tegan has since arriving to work here at Robins Farm. As a rider she has progressed beyond recognition and rides our dual classic placed filly Ligthning Thunder daily. Anyone who watched Olivier Peslier struggle to contain the filly on the way down to post at Royal Ascot can see that this is no mean feat.” Within six months Tegan was riding out with senior jockeys. She breaks in yearlings and regularly rides at home and at the racecourse. Soon after arriving at Robins Farm, it was clear that Tegan was exceptional and her role and confidence has grown immensely and she is now their Head Girl. Tegan will now be invited to meet with the judges in London on Monday 23rd February for the third and final stage of judging, where the winner in each category will be decided. All the winners will be announced that evening during the awards ceremony, hosted by Clare Balding with guest presenter jockey Ryan Moore, at the Jumeirah Carlton Tower Hotel in London. We shall let you know how Tegan did at the awards in next month’s issue. You can keep up to date with job opportunities, career information and news by visiting www.careersinracing.com

CAREERS Working with horses will involve early starts, long hours and the worst of weather, but it can take you to some of the world’s top events

Want to work with horses? If you dream of becoming a riding instructor, competition groom or yard manager how do you get your foot through the door and shine over all the other candidates?

D

ora Pilkington of Coldblow Equestrian Centre says: “Experience counts of course, but employers look for far more than just helping out at weekends whilst at school. Qualifications are needed for jobs in well run yards or centres. There are various routes to gaining those vital bits of paper. If you haven’t made up your mind on a career then go for a college course to keep your options open. For those who want closer contact with horses British Horse Society or Association of British Riding School exam passes are needed. Take a look online and you will see that they are similar, but with subtle differences. You could look for an Apprenticeship or Student Placement. At Coldblow we offer both. However, competition for these schemes is tough, previously we have had over 50 applications for five vacancies for the ABRS Apprenticeship Scheme. In order to get through the training requirements we had to choose candidates with very good prior experience and/or qualifications.”

Going to College

Local equestrian colleges, such as Merrist Wood in Guildford and Hadlow College in Kent offer a variety of part-time and full-time courses. Students from Merrist Wood College have gone on to become trainee riding instructors, competition grooms, worked in event management, retail, horse rehabilitation and therapy, equestrian nutrition, plus many, many, more roles. If you want to work with horses or just learn more about them, take a look at the courses running at Merrist Wood College. The Students at Merrist Wood College having fun bathing a pony

Merrist Wood Equestrian Centre is one of the top facilities in the South East, and they have courses at all levels from Level 1 to BA (Hons) level, full and part time, day and evening. Courses have a strong vocational emphasis, providing commercial awareness and practical competence for a range of careers and abilities. Develop your riding skills, examine horse behaviour and welfare and learn about the industry in areas such as equine fitness and training, horse husbandry, animal science, presentation of horses, equine rehabilitation and therapy, road safety. The courses at Hadlow College include a degree in equine management in partnership with the University of Greenwich. The college said: “This degree provides a number of skills, which give options for future careers, either in the equine industry or selfemployed running their own business.” The Hadlow campus is home to over 60 horses, has a crosscountry course and an international sized arena. The prospectus says: “You will learn how to correctly care for horses, examine horse behaviour and develop your riding ability.”

A Career in Racing

The British Racing School offers a 22 month Apprenticeship which starts with a 14 week residential training course in Newmarket, Suffolk and on completion of this the school guarantees to find you a job as a Groom and Exercise Rider in a Racing Yard. This job is well paid (far more than the average Apprenticeship) and the best thing is, all your training is free. After your initial training course the Workplace Instructors will visit you on a regular basis and you will complete a Level 2 Diploma in Racehorse Care in the work place. Whether you have ambitions of being a Jockey, a Yard Manager, a Work Rider or even a Racehorse Trainer this is the best place start. Courses are starting all year round. For further information visit the website or call the Recruitment Team to discuss your options.

Never look back

If you love horses, the chances are you will end up working with them or in connection to them at some point in your life. Gaining an equestrian qualification at any point in your career will help when it comes to looking for future jobs. Many of the colleges run part-time or evening courses, which are convenient if you are already working or find it difficult to attend during the day. 34 Localrider MARCH 2015

Nayla Cobb Nayla Cobb lives in Bow in East London, works in Stratford and keeps her horse, Apollo’s Prophecy, in Enfield. Despite her various commutes, Nayla likes to ride three times in the week, although without an indoor school, she admits it takes a lot of determination to get on and ride after work in the winter. However, the exercise mid-week has meant Apollo has been able to keep competing over the winter. The combination mainly compete at Patchetts, Harolds Park Farm and Oaklands. Nayla bought the now rising six-year-old Irish Sports Horse, Apollo, from Irish Horse Imports as a three-year-old. He went away for a month to be backed and with the help of her trainer, Rosie Edwards Equine, she has produced him herself since. Nayla describes Apollo as very laid back with a lovely temperament. She said she thinks he would like to be a Shetland pony and spend all of his life in the field. Despite his dreams, Apollo has a busy life and enjoys a bit of everything including cross country. As we went to print the pair were looking forward to representing North Mymms Riding Club at a team dressage competition.

rances Howard from Worthing in Sussex is currently heading the 70cm and 80cm Club Leagues with her 12-year-old mare, J J Diamond II. She is Frances’s first horse, having previously only ridden for friends or shared horses. The combination have been together two years and Frances had never ridden in a competition before 2014, so the Club Shows have been the perfect starting place. However, Frances admits to being competitive and having topped both the 70cm and 80cm Leagues she is keen to move up to 90cm. Frances has trained with Alison Lock since she bought JJ Diamond II, who is described as a Scottish Warmblood, as she is half warmblood, a quarter thoroughbred and a quarter Clydesdale. Frances is a member of Goring Riding Club and Rogate Riding Club and is looking forward to her first team show jumping competition representing Goring at Brendon Pyecombe.

LEGAL

Employment Law: Keeping A Tight Rein Michael McNally from Warners Solicitors explains the importance of clarifying the employment status of your staff and why it must be put down in writing.

I

f you run an equestrian facility, the chances are that you have a number of members of staff. Even if you only have your own stables at home, you may well have one or more people in on a regular basis to help you out. Whichever it is, it is vital that you clarify what their employment status is. Employment tribunals are full of cases where the employer failed to appreciate what the employment status was of a staff member, leading to the employer taking unlawful action and facing an employment claim. A key problem for employers is that it is often very difficult to understand what a staff member’s status is. There are four types of status: ➤ Employee ➤ Worker ➤ Self-employed ➤ Volunteer

Volunteer Dealing with these in reverse order, a volunteer is somebody who works entirely voluntarily without pay (except for the refund of expenses) and who has no contractual rights at all. Such as person is a rare beast and, unless it is very clear that someone is a pure volunteer, you should not assume that any staff member is a volunteer. Volunteers have no employment rights whatever – not even discrimination rights under the Equality Act 2010.

Who is self-employed? The greatest area of confusion is in distinguishing whether a staff member is an employee, a worker or genuinely self-employed. I have often seen examples of owners of equestrian premises or stables describing, for example, a groom as self-employed, when she

plainly is not. The sort of people who are self employed are farriers, vets and builders. When you ask a vet to come out to attend to your horse, the veterinary practice may send out one of a number of different vets – you might prefer to have one particular vet, but you cannot insist on it. The same would apply if you called out a farrier from the farriery practice. The essential point here is that there is no obligation on the practice to provide a particular member of staff. The genuinely self-employed have no employment rights (apart from discrimination rights).

Personal service

The key question as to employment status therefore is whether the person is required to provide personal service – and at times prescribed by you. If you engage a groom and she has to come to your premises to provide work herself – and cannot send a substitute in her place – and has to turn up at times you have agreed with her, then it is extremely unlikely that she is selfemployed and she is very likely to be an employee. This is important because employees have full employment rights including, most importantly, the right not to be unfairly dismissed. The current position is that someone has to be employed for two years before they acquire unfair dismissal rights (except in certain circumstances, such as where they are dismissed for complaining about health and safety or whistleblowing, in which case they have unfair dismissal rights from day one). Once someone has unfair dismissal rights, you cannot dismiss them or take other employment action against them without going through proper procedures, involving meetings and consultations. Many employers lose unfair dismissal claims not because they were not entitled to take disciplinary action against an employee or to dismiss them, but because they didn’t follow the right procedures before doing so. Confusingly, it is sometimes difficult to distinguish between an employee and a worker. Unfortunately, there is no simple and straightforward way of distinguishing between the two. Generally, a worker is someone who is required to provide personal service (in other words they cannot send a substitute in their place) but nonetheless lacks the essential quality of employment status – for example, because that person has flexibility about when she works and can turn up for work when she wants and at times which suit her. Workers have similar employment rights as employees but, critically, do not have unfair dismissal rights.

Put it in writing

The critical thing to be aware of is the need to make a decision when you take someone on as to what their employment status is going to be and then put that in writing. If someone is to be an employee, they should have a contract of employment; equally, if that person is to be a worker only, then they should be given a contract which says that – and the same if someone is to be selfemployed only. If you do this, there is a much greater chance of an employment tribunal accepting that you have clearly thought about it and come to a sensible conclusion which an employment tribunal will not interfere with. In my experience, where the business fails to apply their mind to the employment status of their staff and has not put anything in writing, the employment tribunal is much more likely to decide that someone considered by the employer to be self-employed is in fact an employee or worker, resulting in a successful employment claim. You will also face the risk of HMRC coming after you for tax and national insurance if you have been treating someone as self-employed and consequently not paying tax and national insurance when the employment tribunal and HMRC don’t agree! 38 Localrider MARCH 2015

It’s all about... modern thinking traditional values

Laura Powell writes...

The eventing season is fast approaching and I'm feeling somewhat unprepared - I'm still to make a plan and register the horses I want to run. It’s currently bitterly cold, blowing a gale, and the roads and arenas have been frozen too, we've even had snow on the ground. This has meant a lot of schooling, training and shows have been cancelled and postponed and the horses are lacking in lessons and outings.

I must be getting old

I must be getting old, as I sensibly decided not to take the young, green, fully clipped horses cross country schooling. They can wait until it is a bit warmer! However, I have made it out show jumping with Flint and Alf. I stupidly decided I would ride Alf in a snaffle (why?) as he's been so good since he’s been back in work. He warmed-up well and then realised what was happening and got terribly excited - he really seemed happy to be out at a show. He jumped well, but was far too keen and in the snaffle I only had stop and go - no gears in between, so we had a couple down. Time to dig out all his old kit, including the American gag and rope noseband.

I know the ‘look’

Nessa, who is now fully clipped and full of the joys of spring had been behaving until we went to dressage at Eaglesfield, where she decided to do four horse’s length of rein back and throw a full rear in in the warm-up arena. Fellow competitors gave me the 'look', which I am fairly familiar with, from when Daisy (Nessa’s dam) used to do the same acrobatics! However, she did redeem herself, jumping straight round when we took her clear round jumping.

After time off in the field, Alf is delighted to be back in work. He finished third in a dressage competition at Eaglesfield Equestrian – must have been his lucky green ‘Localrider’ rug!

Another opinionated mare

Alf meanwhile was a joy to ride at the dressage and was in the money for third place. Also at the dressage with a late minute entry was a new ride for me, Meg. She is another feisty, opinionated bay mare. She is about 16.1hh, very well bred out of a Novice mare by the late Med Night Mahoot. I've only ridden her five times and hopefully I'm winning her round to my way of thinking. Despite being very green in the test, I was very pleased with her. Next time she'll have a longer warm-up so hopefully she will concentrate more, rather than looking to see what everyone else is doing. The plan is to produce her to go eventing for and with her owners - she's got a lot of potential. So in the next few weeks I will be out cross country schooling, when I shall probably be hanging on for dear life. Plus we are off to visit Spud in his new hunting home! MARCH 2015 Localrider 39

Foaling the Mare M

Mare and new born foal

A sweat alarm will warn you when your mare starts to sweat during the first stage of labour

Words by Ed Lyall Vet Med Cert EM (StudMed) MRCVS of the Arundel Equine Hospital

ost mares foal without complication, however it is important that they are monitored regularly as the foaling becomes imminent. Mares prefer to foal when all is quiet, as such it is important that the checks do not disturb them. The stable can be fitted with a low wattage light bulb that can be left on. Small cameras are available so that foaling mares can be observed from a distance and sweat alarms can be used to indicate an imminent labour. There are alarms that can be stitched into the vulva which call your mobile phone when the water bag is pushed through the vulva at the onset of labour. In high-risk mares with complications, the milk secretions can be monitored to more accurately identify when labour is likely to begin. The mare herself will start to show signs impending foaling. These may occur several weeks before foaling or may start much closer. The signs include development of the udder, swelling in front of the udder, slackening of the pelvic ligaments resulting in hollowing and softening of the quarters, lengthening and relaxation of the vulva, changes in temperament and the production of wax on the teats. The “waxing-up” of the mare is one of the last signs to occur.

Freezing colostrum

During the last month of pregnancy the udder produces the first milk, colostrum, this is rich in antibodies that protect the foal from infection. Prior to foaling some mares drip or run milk and as a result lose the valuable colostrum, once lost it is not replaced. If this occurs 200ml Normal presentation of a foal volumes can be milked from the mare and frozen, this stored colostrum Once the nose is out of the can be thawed in warm water vulva, it is worth clearing the (not microwaved) and bottle-fed membranes from the nostrils to the foal in the first six hours after foaling.

Three stages of labour

Applying traction in direction of hocks

Foal with legs still in birth canal

While a mare is foaling it is better to minimise interference and to only respond when there is a problem. There are three stages of labour. The first stage is when the foal is getting into the correct position to be born, this may take several hours. During this time the mare may become restless, sweat, look at her flanks and get up and down. The second stage of labour begins with the passing and breaking of the white water bag, it ends with the complete birth of the foal. Ideally mares should foal lying down. The second stage of labour involves the forceful uterine and abdominal contractions required to give birth to the foal, typically the mare will be lying on her side. The average length of the second stage is 17 minutes, if after this length of time when forceful expulsive efforts have been made and the foal has not been produced veterinary assistance should be sought. The third stage of labour involves the passing of the placenta. Once the mare stands after foaling the

placenta should be knotted at the level of the hocks to prevent the mare from standing on it. The placenta is usually passed within one hour, if it is not passed within three hours veterinary assistance will be required. The placenta should be kept for your vet to examine.

Let the mare guide you

Most mares will foal without any complications. The normal presentation is that of a diving posture where the two front feet and the head come together, so the first part of the foal to be seen will be a hoof, usually followed by a second hoof a little further back. The soles of these hooves should be facing the ground, if they are facing upwards the foal is either rotated or it is breach and coming back feet first which is very unusual. A rotated foal will end up in the correct orientation as the mare gets up and down, so let her do this. The leg with the foot which is a little further back will have a flexed elbow, the elbow may catch on the brim of the pelvis, if the mare appears to be making little progress getting the foal out, then between the mare’s contractions grip the pastern on the shorter leg and pull the limb to the same length as the more forward hoof, this will extend the elbow and prevent it catching on the pelvis. Once this is corrected often the foal will come away easily. As well as two front legs there should be a nose, this should be at about the level of the foal’s mid canon on the forelimbs. Once the nose is out of the vulva it is worth just clearing the membranes from the nostrils. If little progress is being made by the mare a little traction can be put on the foal to help it out, the direction of pull should be down towards the mares hocks due to the shape of the birth canal and the posture of the foal. Grasp the pastern regions and pull gently, particularly between the mare’s contractions to prevent the foal slipping back into the uterus, let the contractions push the foal out, just help her. Once the foal gets its chest and then pelvis through the mare’s vulva it will come away very easily. Ideally the foals back legs should be left in the birth canal and the mare allowed to lye quietly to regain her strength, in this position the foal will still remain attached to the placenta via the umbilical cord, during the time it lies here blood from the placenta will be retained by the foal. The placenta should break at the natural weak point next to the foal’s abdomen when the mare stands up. As the foal is lying there make sure the nostrils are clean, sit it on its chest with its front legs wide apart in front of it and rub its chest with straw to stimulate breathing. If at any stage in the birth process there are concerns about the foal’s presentation or its viability then seek veterinary assistance immediately.

Anky Jacket

Pikeur Radina

Pikeur Diana

Pikeur Epsom

This is fantastic jacket is made from a brilliant technical fabric, but doesn’t look great at all on Corinne. Although it fits her, it is the wrong shape completely. It is far too boxy and looks a size too big even though it isn’t. On Corinne it also hides her neat waist, which any woman would want to highlight. This jacket would suit someone who was more of an apple shape as opposed to having curves.

Although Corinne is a fan of the shorter style jacket, even she agrees this doesn’t suit her. The collar is too heavy and accentuates the shorter jacket length, which as she has a long torso, doesn’t do her any favours. This jacket would look stunning on someone who is shorter in the body.

At first glance out of the saddle, this jacket looks great and although she can carry it off, in the saddle it would shorten her leg and that has to be a style no no. After all, we all want that desirable long dressage leg. This jacket is great on stronger framed women as it is really flattering and feminine.

Now we are getting there. This works fit wise although I would prefer a jacket that accentuates her beautiful figure. Corinne likes something a little more unique so this wasn’t her first choice either, but I do like the way it is proportionate for her shape and build. This jacket is ideal for anyone wanting to compliment their curves but add structure to shoulders to give a neat and tidy silhouette.

Style Challenge

If you thought being a size 8/10 means you look great in everything, then Alison Nye-Warden MD and Personal Shopper for premium online retailer Dressage Deluxe has news for you! In this feature, Alison dresses one of her customers for the camera to discuss what to look for to find the right jacket for you with her six of her favourite jackets. Alison said: “Corinne is a size 8 on top and size 10 on the bottom; she is 5’8”, very sporty and therefore well toned. Corinne also has two horses that help keep her fit which she competes at Medium and Advanced Medium levels. As her ‘base layer’ we have dressed our model in a Pikeur Competition shirt, Dressage Deluxe Stock, Pikeur Olympic breeches, Roeckl Chester gloves and she is wearing her own Konig Favorit boots and Samshield Shadowmatt hat with 255 crystals.”

Finally, don’t forget if you need some style advice, our personal shopper service is totally free and could end up saving you a fortune.

Equiline Gioia

Cavallo Galathea Sport and Galathea synthetic fabric with crystal buttons I love this jacket, but the buttons are too high up for Corinne and makes the jacket look even shorter than it is. As you can see with the crystal buttons it looks even worse as the bling buttons stand out more and the fabric has less give in it and therefore it doesn’t fit as well as the softshell (sport) version. Both these style jackets are perfect for ladies with bigger busts and also great for leg lengthening.

I’ve left my personal favourite till last and whilst this would not be to everyone’s taste, this limited edition jacket is fairly blingy and the most expensive. That aside, the shape and length of this jacket are absolutely perfect for Corinne who said that she felt special in the Gioia and would love one as her ‘championship’ jacket or when doing freestyles indoors under lights. For Corinne we are sourcing a less sparkly version of the Equiline jacket for her day-to-day competing.

All you need to do is drop me a line at: personalshopper@ dressagedeluxe.co.uk Include a brief outline of what you are struggling to find, your body measurements and full length photograph of yourself dressed in fairly body hugging clothing and I will help you find the perfect jacket or breeches to suit your shape and build. worming Worries? Words provided by www.viovet.co.uk

Test for egg counts

Conducting faecal egg counts (FECs) gives a good indication of a roundworm problem; however it is limited to detecting only adult roundworms and not tapeworm or encysted larvae. For this reason, worming at certain times of the year cannot be avoided, with special attention being paid to the small redworm over the winter months. Small redworm are the most harmful intestinal worm and need to be treated against while they are still encysted in the gut wall. At this stage, larvae cannot be measured, so make sure you worm in winter with a Moxidectin or Fenbendazole-based product. Come March/April when untreated larvae mature, the burden to your horse can be life-threatening.

Diagnosing tapeworm

Until recently, a blood test was the only way to detect tapeworm, but the arrival of the EquiSal Tapeworm Test is set to change this with a simple saliva swab. VioVet offers personalised worming advice from our E-SQP (Equine Suitably Qualified Person) along with their saliva tapeworm test results. For many horses, roundworm treatment will not be required over the summer months as, by the age of six, they have usually developed a good immunity to adult worms. Using a FEC is the best way to determine which horses, if any, need treating. Dosing correctly in line with your horse’s weight is also critical as under-dosing can lead to resistance in surviving worms and over-dosing provides no added benefit. If Season

you aren’t sure how to weigh your horse, ask the vet or E-SQP for advice. Danielle Fletcher, E-SQP, from online equine retailer VioVet.co.uk explains: “Horse owners are becoming increasingly interested in using a targeted worming plan, but the names of chemicals, parasites they target, seasonal effectiveness and building a plan can be a lot to take in. Helping customers to understand this approach to worming is a very important part of my job and so for anyone who is unsure, seeking advice is always worthwhile.” VioVet is the one-stop online shop for all your wormer needs, offering everything from wormers and testing kits, to expert advice on what to worm and when. In-house vets and SQPs are always on hand to answer your worming questions, so don’t have worming worries, get in touch with VioVet.

outine worming constitutes an important part of caring for horses and ensuring their continued health. However, evidence suggests that worms are becoming increasingly resistant to horse wormers. Many people still follow a traditional ‘interval dosing’ programme that blanket treats, unfortunately research suggests this style of programme could be contributing to resistance. There are currently no new wormers in the pipeline, so targeted worming is key to preventing resistance. In this article the experts at online equine retailer VioVet.co.uk explain what to worm and when to worm, for year-round, effective control.

Tried & Tested

Verdo Horse Bedding

T

his clever heat-treated wood pellet product, created for equine use is activated using a small amount of water and within approximately 15 minutes, you are ready to empty the open bags out onto the stable floor and create a soft fluffy and dry bed ready for your horse. Because the pellets are manufactured from 100% virgin soft wood and heat treated to eliminate pests and bacteria, you can rest assured that your horse is sleeping on only the best and it’s good to know that it also has a low dust content, making it the ideal choice for those horses stabled for long periods of time during the winter months. When it comes to your pocket, compared to other products on the market, Verdo Horse Bedding can save you as much as 40% on your yearly bill and because the bedding comes in pellet form, this also means less storage is needed, allowing more room for stocking up on those other essentials such as hay and feed in case bad weather interrupts delivery. Other key factors include; less waste (the beds are quicker and easier to muck out and the muck heap breaks down quicker), pellets absorb up to three times their own weight in liquid (reducing ammonia and helping to keep your horses’ stable fresh and hooves dry) and their own established UK production plant which is open 364 days a year (no more worry about consistent quality or supply issues) Verdo Horse Bedding costs £5.65 - £5.95 per 15kg bag. For stockist enquiries call 01264 726 760 www.verdohorsebedding.co.uk

LOCALRIDER COMMENT: Laura Powell of Laura’s Diary tested the Verdo Horse Bedding. Laura said: “Having used other wood pellet beddings before I was keen to try Verdo. Firstly I was very impressed at the communication skills of the company they used to courier it, having had problems with dates, times and the size of lorry they wanted to use to make the delivery. The bedding itself was well wrapped in strong plastic bags, which can easily be stored outside, if you have limited space undercover. The pellets were of good quality, a nice bright colour and had hardly any dust. I found they worked well with rubber matting. They absorb the wet very efficiently and I found them quick and clean to muck out, without the odour you might associate with a straw or shavings bed.

Feed news

Laminitic Worries Words by Sarah Nelson, SPILLERS® nutritionist

A

s we step out of winter, most of us are ready to welcome the arrival of warmer weather and lighter nights, but concerns over laminitis may leave some owners far from feeling ‘full of the joys of spring’. If this sounds all too familiar, the following advice may help. Feeding any laminitic horse or pony should focus on providing a diet that is high in fibre and low in non-structural carbohydrate (NSC). Put simply, NSC is the sum of starch, sugar and fructan, the storage form of sugar in grass and consequently hay and haylage too.

Grazing Tips

• Consider using a grazing muzzle, these have been shown to reduce grass intake by 80% on average; regardless of the season. • Be aware that turning out for a short period unmuzzled may encourage ‘gorging’. • Do not turn out on frosty grass, particularly in conjunction with bright sunlight. • Consider turning out at night when fructan levels are likely to be lower (provided the soil temperature is consistently above 5°C). • Grazing may need to be removed completely for some horses, particularly during ‘high risk’ periods such as spring and autumn. In these cases ensure that alternative forage is fed at a minimum of 1.5% bodyweight per day. • Consider turning out in bare paddocks or manages.

Hay & Haylage

Both hay and haylage can easily contain more than twice the level of WSC recommended for laminitics (<10%), so consider having your forage analysed. This is the only way to determine the nutritional value of your forage, regardless of its cut, smell or appearance. Soaking for 12-16 hours in tepid water can reduce WSC by up to 50%, but unfortunately results are variable and soaking cannot guarantee safety. Alternatively, consider a short chop forage replacer specifically formulated to be low in NSC.

Balancers

Good-doers will often maintain weight well (if not too well) on forage alone and whilst this may easily meet or exceed energy (calorie) requirements, it is unlikely to provide a balanced supply of vitamins minerals and quality protein. Balancers are therefore the

ideal way to provide a balance diet without feeding excess calories, starch or sugar.

Compound & Fibre Feeds

Not all laminitics are good-doers and provided you choose feeds wisely, it is possible to provide underweight horses with the additional calories they need without increasing the risk of laminitis. Start by choosing fibre and oil based feeds that are whole cereal free and low in starch and sugar. Although feeds approved by The Laminitis Trust are designed to be suitable, they are by no means the only suitable option. In fact, it could be that the most suitable feed for your horse doesn’t mention laminitis on the bag at all; speak to a nutritionist for more advice.

Weight Watching

Although it may not accurately determine your horse or pony’s exact weight, weekly weigh-taping (ideally at the same time of day) can help to keep track of gradual changes. However, weight only tells part of the story, so you should monitor your horse’s body condition score (BCS) too, aiming to maintain a score of 5 on a 1-9 scale. Although maintaining the ‘perfect figure’ is difficult (for us all); increasing the BCS above a 5 should be avoided. Equally, don’t be tempted to let your horse’s BCS drop below 4.5, even if he still has a large crest.

Myth Busters

• Molasses may have become a ‘’dirty word” in recent years, but feeds for laminitics do not have to be molasses free. It is the total amount sugar in the diet and not the inclusion of individual ingredients, such as molasses that is important. Feeds containing molasses are not automatically high in sugar. • Laminitics do not need a sugar free diet. Glucose is essential for brain function, meaning all horses and ponies need some sugar in their diet to stay healthy. Although it’s almost impossible to find a sugar free feed, all feeds could be described as having ‘no added sugar’, even if it doesn’t say so on the bag. • Protein does not cause or increase the risk of laminitis. • Carrots contain approximately 85% water which means the average 100g carrot will only contain approximately 4g of sugar. This means you can treat your horse or pony to a few carrots, just don’t feed him the whole bag – everything in moderation. march 2015 Localrider 57

Feed news

What to feed the laminitic prone horse or pony Feeding horses can be complicated, especially if you have a horse prone to gaining weight easily. Already the grass is beginning to grow and if the mild weather continues we may head into spring with some horses already carrying a fair amount of condition. With this in mind, we have looked into a range of products which are aimed at horses which could be prone to laminitis.

Mollichaff Hoofkind

mollichaff hoofKind from horsehage is a complete fibre feed designed for the nutritional support of horses and ponies prone to laminitis. made from a balanced blend of high quality oat straw, dried alfalfa and fibre pellets, hoofKind is topped with a light dressing of soya oil with added vitamins and minerals, trace elements, antioxidants and biotin. It is low in starch and sugar, high in fibre and does not contain any cereals, and because it is very palatable, it’s great if you have a fussy feeder. It is also low in protein and calories which is excellent if your horse tends to get a bit ‘fizzy’. hoofKind contains all the vitamins and minerals your horse or pony needs along with added biotin to keep his hooves healthy, and so, unless he gets lots of hard work, you don’t need to add anything extra other than good quality forage Call 01803 527257 or visit www.horsehage.co.uk

British Horse Feeds Speedi-Beet

The greatest risk to laminitics is the first feed of the day where intake is proportionately highest and the risk of overloading the small intestine with sugars is most likely. Offering a good meal (1.5 – 2.0 kg) of soaked Speedi-Beet before turnout will provide a healthy, low sugar first feed and allow subsequent feeding at a lower rate. The rate of passage is slower and there is more time for the sugars to be absorbed out of the small intestine and this reduces the chance of hindgut malfunction. reducing the daily intake of spring grass by avoiding the time of greatest fructans intake (first feed of the day), Speedi-Beet can help reduce the potentially negative effects of spring grass. Call 01765 680300 or visit www.britishhorsefeeds.com

Rowen Barbary Forage ‘n’ Fibre

although it may not feel like it at times, we have experienced a mild winter which has resulted in grass growing until much later in the season. This continued grass growth has had a knock on effect with many native breeds still requiring restricted diets throughout the winter. For horses in low levels of work and good doers who are often put on restricted grazing rowen Barbary Forage ‘n’ Fibre is ideal to use to balance the forage given supplying all the essential vitamins and minerals whilst keeping energy and calories to a minimum. containing a natural blend of forages and fibres it helps provide the horse with all the necessary nutrients required for overall health and vitality whilst keeping energy levels low. With high fibre levels this help ensure slow rates of digestion throughout the hind gut and helps to maintain gut health. as it contains no cereals and is very low in starch and sugars it is well suited to horses and ponies that are prone to laminitis. NAF Slim

NaF Slim is a highly palatable weight management supplement, designed to provide essential micronutrients to those horses on a restricted diet. When feed intake is reduced, there is a risk of vitamin and mineral deficiency, which is where Slim comes into its own. The unique blend of ingredients work in synergy with naturally occurring metabolism boosters to provide all that those on a restricted diet need for health and vitality. With essential vitamins and naturally sourced antioxidants, Slim works to naturally promote wellbeing for good do’ers, whilst supporting healthy weight loss. www.naf-equine.eu/uk

Horslyx

horslyx offers an ideal method of controlling calorie intake in horses and ponies prone to laminitis without compromising on valuable vitamins and minerals. The carefully chosen ingredients offer a balanced and palatable method of feeding the required nutrients to help with hooves, coat and skin and general wellbeing. The rate of consumption of food is the key to safe feeding for overweight equines and those suffering from or prone to laminitis, and horslyx is perfect as licking takes time and patience. allowing them restricted access to horslyx will give you peace of mind that they are still receiving a balanced diet without the risk of adding extra calories through concentrate feed. Chestnut Lite

chestnut Lite from chestnut horse Feeds is a complete, palatable blend of long chopped oat straw, low sugar molasses, lucerne pellets and oatfeed pellets, as well as a balanced supply of vitamins and minerals. chestnut Lite is oat and barley free, low in energy, starch and protein and high in fibre, lowering the intake of the soluble carbohydrates including starch and fructans that greatly increase the risk of laminitis when over-consumed. This is designed to encourage a higher chew rate and an extended feeding time, which promotes digestive health and allows horses to be fed in a natural trickle feeding pattern, ideal for those prone to weight gain and laminitis. chestnut horse Feeds chestnut Lite is available in 20kg bags or with a 90kg chestnut horse Feeds Bulk Bin Feeding System. The unique Bulk Bin is delivered full of feed and provided free of charge for the life-span of the chosen product, helping to keep yards tidy, rodents out and ensuring feed stays fresh and contaminant-free. TopSpec antiLam is a pelleted multi-supplement designed to provide 5-way nutritional support for those prone to, being treated for, or recovering from laminitis. antiLam is a brilliant formulation combining several supplements with a high-fibre, very low-calorie carrier to make it palatable. The formula is very low in sugar and starch and cereal-grain-free, making it ‘Non-heating.’ Long-term trials at middle Park Laminitis research Unit have shown that horses and ponies on restricted/poor grazing do not gain any weight when fed antiLam. It can also be used very successfully as part of a calorie-controlled diet when weight loss is required. antiLam should be fed on its own with forage. The forage can be in the form of late-cut, low-sugar, hay and/or unmolassed chops e.g. Topchop Lite, or controlled grazing, or a combination of these, depending on the individual circumstances.

Lifeforce Formula is specially designed for breeding horses, helping to improve the reproductive health of both mares and stallions, allowing horses to maximise nutrient uptake from their diet, by enhancing fibre digesting bacteria. This will help provide essential nutrients to the mare during the gestation period and while lactating, and benefit the stallion during the pressure of the covering season. containing all natural ingredients it supports fermentation of feeds and forages in the caecum, as well as immune function. Lifeforce Formula also contains organic trace minerals that help maintain mare milk quality and promote healthy growth in young foals. Lifeforce Formula can also benefit the foal during weaning to help strengthen the immune system and combat the effects of stress related diarrhoea.

Tried & Tested Swift Energy Horse Bedding Wood pellets make excellent bedding for horse stables as they can help reduce cleaning out times when compared to using wood shavings. Swift Energy pellet bedding is manufactured from virgin wood that is carefully processed to provide an allergy and dust free pellet, which is highly absorbent. In addition, wood pellet bedding composts much more quickly than shavings or straw. Swift Energy supply bedding pellets in handy 15kg bags or in 1 tonne bulk bags that have lifting handles. For more information visit www.swiftenergyuk.com

Localrider Comment:

1 To start the bed open the bag and pour on water

Karen Ede tested the Swift Energy Horse Bedding, she said: “Not having tried this brand of pellet bedding before, I put down 10 bags in my 12’x12’ stable and was pleasantly surprised by how much the bedding expanded once water had been added. If I was starting a whole new bed again (on rubber matting) I would probably only use 6- 8 bags, making this bedding very cost efficient.

2 Once the water has been absorbed the pellets swell

3 Once laid the pellets make a soft, yet very absorbent bed

My overall first impressions are brilliant and I am looking forward to seeing how easy this bed is to maintain over the coming months.”

“This is Ruben, my 23-year-old Welsh Cob/TB cross, who gets Topspec Senior Feed Balancer. He was given to me as a ‘happy hack’ by a very good friend, who retired him from his career as a hunter, last year. Although he’s 23 he still thinks he’s a youngster and loves nothing better than charging around the North Yorkshire Moors and National Forest. I like to think he also looks younger than his age and as you can probably tell....he loves the camera! I started giving him Topspec Senior Feed Balancer on the recommendation of Carol Lorinson who works at Thompson Feeds in Murton, North Yorkshire, and I think he is doing very well on it. Hopefully you think he looks as well as I do!” Samantha Warnakulasuriya

Feed news

All About Laminitis Words by Anna Welch, Veterinary Nutritionist, TopSpec

L

aminitis is a disease of the foot. In a normal horse or pony, the hoof wall and pedal bone are held together by an intricate structure called the laminae. Laminitis is the end result of multiple factors which ultimately lead to the inflammation, disruption and failure of the laminae in the foot. More recent research confirms hormonal causes as one of the most important contributing factors, for example, Insulin Resistance (IR) or Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS) and Pars Pituitary Intermedia Dysfunction (PPID)/ Cushing’s. Other ‘predisposing factors’ which could contribute to, trigger or worsen laminitis include: Excessive intake of sugar and starch (soluble carbohydrates) • Grass high in sugar and/or fructans – care to be taken with spring/autumn/frosted grass • Hard feeds high in starch/cereals • Highly molassed feeds A rise in insulin levels in the blood is seen with high intakes of sugar and starch. Research has found that high levels of blood insulin directly precipitate laminitis. The microbial balance of the hindgut can also be upset, causing the hindgut to become more acidic. This can cause ‘Laminitis Trigger Factors’ to leak into the bloodstream, ultimately causing laminitis. Obesity • Internal fat is hormonally active and can initiate changes in the foot which lead to laminitis • Obese horses and ponies may also have IR • Greater load on the structures of the hoof Stress e.g. • Travel • Separation from field companions Trauma (physical trigger of pressure affecting the blood supply to the foot) • Repeated traumatic exercise on hard ground • Excessive weight bearing – limb fracture Toxins released by bacteria (e.g. retained placenta, colic, diarrhoea etc)

Hay can then gradually be reduced to 1.5% of ideal bodyweight, to help weight loss, if necessary. If the hay quality is unknown, it can be analysed but in the meantime, can be soaked in ample fresh, cold or lukewarm water for 6-12 hours to significantly reduce the sugars it contains. At least in the short term, a low sugar/starch chop such as TopChop Lite, can be used as a hay replacer. If horses are underweight, then low NSC hay can continue to be fed ad-lib. It is important to feed a diet that includes yeast products, high levels of antioxidants and optimum levels of the nutrients needed to improve hoof quality. TopSpec AntiLam is a pelleted, fully comprehensive supplement which contains a broad spectrum supplement, therapeutic hoof supplement and pure, protected yeast. The latter creates beneficial conditions for the growth of fibre-digesting bacteria in the hindgut. Mannan oligosaccharides (MOS) bind to the undesirable bacteria and remove them from the gut, leaving the fibre-digesting bacteria free to multiply and reduce the acidity of the hindgut. The high levels of anti-oxidants included are also helpful in removing excess free-radicals. In consultation with a nutritionist, the diet can be slowly adapted if more condition is required depending on the progress of each individual case. The diet should remain low sugar and starch with products such as TopSpec FibrePlus Cubes and unmolassed alfalfa, such as TopChop Alfalfa, being used if needed. If too much condition has been lost, once the horse or pony has been completely sound for a month, the use of a cereal-grain free feed balancer, such as TopSpec Comprehensive Feed Balancer can be very helpful. Horses and ponies who have had laminitis, especially those with underlying hormonal dysfunction, should be kept on the light side of ideal weight in order to reduce the incidence and severity of laminitis reoccurring. For more information TopSpec can be contacted, free of charge, on their Multiple-Award-Winning-Helpline Tel: 01845-565030

Firstly, when dealing with a laminitic, the ‘trigger factor’ of the episode needs to be removed. For example, bringing in from grass (onto a deep bed of shavings), stopping cereal-based feeds, reducing stress/trauma where possible and/ or initiating investigation/treatment of complicating diseases such as PPID, retained placenta etc. The key dietary factors which need addressing to support recovery are: 1) Reducing the sugar and starch intake to a minimum to control the insulin response. 2) Re-establishing the fibre-digesting bacterial population of the hindgut. 3) Weight control (if necessary). It is important never to starve a laminitic as this can have fatal consequences. If a horse or pony is overweight then low (<10%) NSC (Non Structural Carbohydrate) hay should be fed ad-lib, for no more than a week, to help re-establish the correct hindgut bacterial balance. 62 Localrider march 2015
