have been out and about doing what I love best, reporting and talking to riders, since we last went to print and it has been wonderful to meet so many of you. Some of the riders I have met before, but it was great to meet lots of new grassroots riders, especially those like our cover star this month, Maisie Blackman, who is currently competing on the lead rein, but starting to A selfie with David Todd at ride off the lead rein at home. the Sunshine Tour Champs! We have dedicated twelve pages of this issue to the Sunshine Tour Championships. Run over four days at Hickstead, the show includes championships for dressage, show jumping, showing and eventers challenge. We haven’t been able to feature everyone, but for our full report turn to page 46. Having never taken a ‘selfie’ myself, I was slightly bemused when Linda Todd’s husband David asked if he could take one with me. Apparently, he is a big fan of Localrider, so I decided to share our picture for you all to see. Whilst for many riders qualifying for the Sunshine Tour Championships has been their goal this year, for others it has been competing at the Horse of the Year Show. We have had some fabulous local results at HOYS and you can find out more on page 12. There was more to celebrate this issue, when Surrey-based Georgie Wood won a SsangYong Musso Pick-up at the South of England Horse Trials, for the horse and rider combination gaining the most points across three events. You can read all about Georgie and her veteran, Sjapo Le Sursaut, on page 34. I couldn’t sign off without reminding you that there are only seven shopping weekends until Christmas. We have put together a wonderful selection of gifts for you, your family, friends and horse too in our ‘Christmas Wish List’ feature on page 38. I think I would be happy to receive any of the items we have featured. We love to keep in contact and hear all your news, so make sure you are following us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter and follow the chat, we love sharing pictures too. Have Fun! NEWS equiXTREME launch at HOYS

The Hannah Francis Award

E

quivation the company behind the stunning handcrafted weather vanes, sign plates, coat racks and other gift items sold at the large equestrian shows, Before After has added German brand equiXTREME to their range of products. equiXTREME produce a range of innovative horse care products that really are as effective as they look. They made their debut on British soil with Equivation at HOYS in October, and were instantly popular with heaps of glowing reviews quickly coming back. One of the products making the most striking difference is ‘Vital Shampoo White’, just as the back of the bottle indicates, it dissolves dirt immediately, as can be seen in the pictures. In summer of 2017, BSHAI Instructor and event rider Jake Tarrant was approached by equiXTREME brand development manager Friederike Pfiel, who had seen him on Facebook through his ‘Little Bentley Eventing’ page and was keen to make him their first UK brand ambassador. Shortly after the partnership was formed, a range of equiXTREME products were sent over and put through vigorous testing at the Little Bentley Eventing yard. German efficiency had been a success yet again, and soon, Jake was telling Freddy about his company Equivation, and discussions began about bringing the equiXTREME range to the UK. Charlotte Stephens, Marketing Assistant at Equivation said: “Quality oozes from every single item that comes from equiXTREME, and they are all unbelievably effective. The German approach takes a refreshing look at the way in which we care for our horses and their kit. The equiXTREME range includes three different types of leather care product, grooming items such as shampoo, detangler, hair polish and antibacterial hoof balm. Not only that, but the company is strongly against animal testing, and focuses on using safe, yet powerful ingredients that really do work.” For your chance to try these products enter the Equivation Giveaway on Page 24. www.equivation.com

Equetech 3 in 1 Trilogy Jacket The Equetech 3 in 1 Trilogy Jacket offers fashion conscious riders two jackets in one clever design. Featuring a waterproof, wind resistant outer shell, the gorgeous snug full-length quilted jacket also features a shorter smart lightweight zip out quilted lightweight jacket. Designed to be worn in three different ways, the jacket can be worn in its entirety or the inner jacket zipped out for milder day wear and the outer longer layer for less artic weather this winter.

Nominations are now open for the Hannah Francis Award for an Inspirational Young Eventer. Do you know a young eventer (aged 22 years or younger) who has inspired you? Maybe they have overcome an injury to get back out competing or they have always been there to support their friends, even when things are not going well for them, whatever it is, the Wilberry Wonder Pony Charity want to know about it. The award was set up in 2016 to honour Hannah and her achievements. It is now being awarded yearly in memory of Hannah and the inspiration that she was to so many in the eventing community. You need to enter online, by following the link below. Complete the form, explaining what is so special about your nominee. The winning nominee will be presented with the bronze of Hannah jumping her horse Mavis by Olympic International event rider Kitty King at her yard in Wiltshire. To enter go to https://www.willberrywonderpony.org/blogs/news Entries close on Friday 10th November.

Working out for winter fitness With dark, short days, many people use lungeing to keep their horse ‘ticking over’. Ten minutes of whizzing round burns some calories, but does little for correct, physical work and even less in terms of enjoyment for you both. You can give your horse a workout that makes him use his back, encourages engagement and develops core strength and swing. The EquiAmi simply and effectively promotes this way of going and brings improvements over the winter months. Dr Hilary Bentley of EquiAmi says: “People are surprised just how well their horses work and how quickly great results appear in this great aid; saving time and effort.” www.equiami.com

Champion Ventair Deluxe Jockey Helmet

The jacket features other great design details such as snaffle zip pulls in silver, a two-way zip, storm flap, detachable waterproof hood and long zip to back hem of outer jacket for use in the saddle.

Chosen by many of the world’s top event riders including Pippa Funnell, Piggy French and Kitty King, the Ventair Deluxe Helmet is extremely lightweight and comfortable, whilst offering outstanding protection. Featuring a ventilated airflow system that is styled to increase airflow to help keep your head cool and a uniquely tailored harness for complete stability and security.

British Horse Feeds Speedi-Beet Speedi-Beet from British Horse Feeds is a unique beet pulp feed which can be soaked in warm water and be ready to feed in just under ten minutes. Feeding Speedi-Beet warm helps to raise the horse’s core body temperature. There’s a high proportion of soluble fibre, mostly pectins in Speedi-Beet, which means its fibre is more easily digested than that found in forage e.g. hay. This makes it a great source of non-heating slow release energy. The low starch and sugar content means Speedi-Beet is also ideal for horses and ponies susceptible to laminitis. Made using only best quality British Beet Pulp, Speedi-Beet is subjected to British Horse Feeds’ patented cooking process to produce a unique soaked feed. It is extremely versatile and can be fed in larger quantities to a poor doer for weight gain., or fed in small amounts to overweight horses as a carrier for a multivitamin and mineral supplement. For more information on Speedi-Beet contact British Horse Feeds on 01765 680300 or visit www.britishhorsefeeds.com Last month we forgot to mention that Maegan Blake and Thomas won the Mini Jumping with the sole clear round at the Bromley Bridleways Access Group Show Jumping Show.

More charities get the chance for £50k grant One deserving charity will receive a grant of £50,000 to get 2018 off to a great start — courtesy of SEIB Insurance Brokers and chosen by its clients. “This is an incredible opportunity for a good cause to have an amazing 2018 and we want our clients to help us to make the choice,” said SEIB chief executive Barry Fehler. “The aim is to give the money to a charity that will use the sum for the major part of a capital investment.” The interest that this unique competition has attracted is such that SEIB has raised the cap of income level to £15million, which means more charities will be eligible for the generous grant but it will still make a significant difference.

Insurance is a small price to pay for your priceless friend, isn’t it?

SEIB clients have until 31 December 2017 to choose their charity. The shortlisted charities will be contacted by SEIB so they can describe their plans for the £50,000, should they be chosen for the award. Once the responses have been analysed and verified, SEIB clients will be asked to vote again for their preferred winner.

“We don’t want to dictate to our clients which charity they should support; we want to find out about the good causes they actually believe in,” explained Mr Fehler. “For example, £50,000 could fund a new sensory room at a children’s hospice, It doesn’t matter if your horse is a top competition animal a kennel or stable block for an animal charity or for a homeless or a veteran field ornament, he will be priceless to you. charity to purchase more facilities. FEATURE Charter Tax was founded in 2009 by Janet Pierce (neé Paterson) and is now a full service accounting firm with over 30 staff. Charter Tax has a particular specialism in tax matters, including estate planning. Janet herself is a keen equestrian, with a small yard and seven horses of her own. Charter Tax are also proud sponsors of Francis Whittington Eventing.

Death & Taxes A

s we all know, there are only two certainties in life, death and taxes. Well, that means – particularly for a land-owner – that one of their biggest worries will be the impact of inheritance tax when they die. In very general terms, when you die, your net assets in excess of £325,000 are charged to inheritance tax at a rate of 40%. There are then exceptions for this, most notably the spousal exemption (assets can generally be left to your spouse/civil partner inheritance tax free) and also in particular exceptions for assets that qualify for either agricultural property relief or business property relief.

Agricultural Property Relief Agricultural property relief is an inheritance tax relief that will certainly help out the majority of farmers and their land value. However, for equestrians, land for horses will normally only manage to fall within the definition required for inheritance tax agricultural property relief if a stud farm is operated from the property – livery yards cannot qualify under this category of relief.

Business Property Relief Fortunately, though, there is another category of relief under which we may find an exemption from inheritance tax, namely that of business property relief. The problem for livery yards, though, is that HMRC like to try to argue that livery yards fall within an exclusion from the business property relief regime, which applies to businesses which “consist wholly or mainly of one or more of … making or holding investments” (the investment exclusion). The point here is that business property relief is supposed to be available for assets held as part of an activity which is carried out as a trade, rather than having an underlying intention to hold an

If you own or run a livery yard, figuring out the tax issues affecting the yard will probably be fairly down the to do list, compared with ordering feed/ making that last-minute call to the farrier/ mending the latest bit of fencing to be broken, etc. However, of course as we all know, the tax issues tend to have a habit of not going away unless they’re dealt with properly. This is therefore the first in a series of articles written by Janet Pierce of Charter Tax to help busy yard-owners understand the tax issues relevant to them and their yard and we wanted to try to start with some good news to explain a recent win that the taxpayer had in the courts and how you may be able to benefit from the same rules. investment (i.e. land) and it just so happens that you use that land for something else. For example, if you had a trade of carrying out horse transport, then your horse lorry will generally be regarded as an asset of that trade and, if you die, the value of the horse lorry would be part of your business value and that value would attract business property relief (assuming you don’t also use the lorry personally). On the other hand, if you own a chunk of land and you let that out to someone, you’re just getting rental income, which isn’t considered a business (and even if it was, it would be a business that is then caught by the investment exclusion - effectively you have a land investment that you just happen to rent out, which the business property exemption for inheritance tax purposes isn’t intended to cover.

Can Livery Businesses Claim Inheritance Tax Exemption? So where does this leave livery businesses? Do HMRC view livery businesses as a business capable of qualifying for the inheritance tax exemption for business property, or are livery businesses caught by the exclusion for holding investments? Where all a landowner does is to allow people to graze their land (e.g. just leasing the land or even charging on a “per horse” grass livery basis but otherwise having nothing to do with the land other than perhaps the occasional bit of perimeter fencing) then this would fall within the investment exclusion such that business property relief would not apply. In this sense, it is no different to a landlord renting out a property. However, what about where the land-owner/yard-owner does more than this? Where do you draw the line between what is in effect a rental arrangement and what is a business?

1 Worming – the yard would buy the wormer and would administer it where and when necessary (if an owner was unable and/or unwilling so to do), on a quarterly basis.

Pic by Jon Stroud

Unfortunately the main case on this point historically, in relation to horses, has been a tax case back in 2009 [McCall and another (personal representatives of McClean (deceased))v CRC [2009] STC 990], which concerned letting land for grazing. The court heard in that case that the owners spent about 100 hours a year tending the land, doing such things as weed control, fence maintenance, litter and damage control and drainage and water works but, importantly, not the sowing of fertiliser. Unfortunately for the taxpayer, the court held that the business consisted wholly or mainly of the making of investments and so the business property relief did not apply. Effectively, the court regarded the work of the land-owner, in this case, as being analogous to a rental property landlord who, OK, kept the property in good order but fundamentally was carrying out a rental activity from their land, rather than using their land for a full-on business. This has often meant that livery businesses would have an uphill struggle in claiming their business property relief. However, happily this August HMRC’s view on the application of business property relief to livery businesses received a serious blow, following a court decision in favour of the taxpayer and confirming that business property relief could indeed apply. This case concerned the late Mrs Maureen Vigne, who died on 29 May 2012. At that time she was the sole owner of approximately 30 acres of land, known as Gravelly Way livery stables, Buckinghamshire. She lived off-site. The court heard that after the death of Mrs Vigne’s husband, a decision was taken to let the entire land to Mr. John Lye. However, in 2008, Mr Lye ceased to occupy as a tenant/ licensee of the land and instead became the Yard Manager for the business which Mrs Vigne then decided to operate. Following the re-launch of the yard in 2008, it was decided that in a bid to give the business a competitive advantage, services over and above those which would usually be included in grass livery and/or DIY livery would be included in the package offered by the business. Mrs Vigne’s son gave evidence that the livery package offered by his late mother’s business then included the following:

The profits for the business were modest at best. However, even so the court did not feel that this meant the business fell foul of the investment exclusion. Interestingly, though, the case does refer to the payment of business rates by the yard, and noted that this was indicative of a business rather than an investment proposition. The facts as described above in the case of Mrs Vigne were enough to convince HMRC that indeed the business carried on by her was a business over and above holding the land as an investment and, as such, her estate got the benefit of business property relief, and saved 40% inheritance tax on the value of the business (including the land value). Of course, HMRC may well yet appeal the decision and we will have to watch that space but in the meantime, for many yardowners/land-owners this prospect to obtain business property relief is, therefore, worth a very serious look. In reality it may not be hard to re-structure many grass livery/DIY livery businesses to fall within the above defined additional services required for the business to be sufficient to go beyond the holding of the land as an investment. If you have found this article of interest and would like to find out more about Business Property Relief, then contact Janet Pierce at Charter Tax.

2 Providing the horses with hay feed during the winter months. A hay crop was grown on part of the land referred to as the hayfield. The provision of hay was sited in the cases as being over and above what a “normal” grass livery/ DIY livery yard owner would provide. 3 Removing horse manure from the fields. Again, this was sited as being over and above what would normally be provided in a grass livery/DIY livery package. Interestingly also the point was made to the court that this manure removal was in the interests of the horses, but not necessarily in the interests of the land (as the manure might otherwise have been used to fertilise the land). 4 Undertaking a daily check of the general health of each horse. The yard would let the owner know if any given horse required a vet, with the yard having permission to call the vet in case of emergency. 5 Re-organising the electric fencing to enable strip grazing. 6 Rugging where necessary. Mr. Lye in fact didn’t stay as Yard Manager all that long and there was a succession of different yard managers. The role was, though, taken to be a role that required about 20 hours work per week. Interestingly also the Yard Managers each had a qualification (at least BHS Stage 4, or equivalent), which again helped with the argument that there was more going on here than just the mere rental of land. A Business Plan dated 20 August 2009 recorded that the business intended to expand so as to provide part livery (in the sense described above) as well as providing DIY livery for those who wished to care for their own horses. It records that although there were only 11 stables at that time, planning permission existed for further stables and storage rooms to be erected. In 2009 an application was also put in for yard managers accommodation – again with on-site security argued to be an add-on to the livery service.

Are your worming drugs working? There’s a simple way to find out…

I

t’s easy to keep on worming our horses in the belief that the drugs are killing the parasites and all is well. but how do we know they are working? What if some worms have become resistant and are slowly breeding a population of parasites on your grazing land that are untouchable by chemicals? The good news is that we can test to see how effective the drugs have been and Westgate Labs is stepping in to make this as easy as possible for horse owners. “resistance is a very real threat that is facing our horses, and other grazing animals” commented equine veterinary Surgeon, Carolyn Cummins. “Just like antibiotics, repeated exposure to our limited chemical armoury over time has enabled the worms on our pastures to turn. Unchecked this leaves our animals susceptible to endemic disease caused by parasites, such as life threatening colics, colitis, haemorrhages, anaemia and lifelong intestinal scarring and respiratory disease. “Following a regular dosing programme is no longer a guarantee that our horses are protected from the harm of parasites. We need to be monitoring them with regular worm counts and tests and, when treatment becomes necessary, doing more to measure the efficacy of the drugs we use by conducting a simple follow-up test known as a resistance test.” For a wormer to go to market it needs to be more than 95% effective against the worms it is licenced to kill – but with regular treatment resistance on the pasture grows and egg reappearance times (as dictated in the drug’s data sheet) begin to diminish over time. This means the usefulness of a drug against a specific parasite species can be measured:

with a fenbendazole based drug had parasites that were showing some resistance to the wormer compared to 2.8% of horses wormed with a moxidectin based drug. Worryingly the results also showed that 50% of those with a positive redworm count that had been treated with moxidectin had been under dosed, leaving those horses more susceptible to developing resistant strains of redworm. Horses must be given the correct dose for their weight. In all cases Westgate were able to follow-up with customers and advise an alternative treatment to ensure each horse’s worm control was managed. Kristy continued: “We would encourage all horse owners to treat for encysted small redworm in winter, regardless of their worm count status, unless they have clearly assessed the risk of not including this winter dose.” encysted redworm should be treated annually between December and February with either a single dose of a moxidectin-based wormer or a five-day course of a fenbendazole-based wormer. The use of wormers at other times of year should be targeted based on the results of faecal egg counts and equiSal saliva tests. Find out more at www.westgatelabs.co.uk or call the lab on 01670 791994.

• Easy, reliable service for parasite control, discounts for multiple horses, commercial rate for yards of +10 horses. Great value season packs.

✔ After a positive worm egg count for redworm or roundworm that requires treatment, conduct a second worm egg count 10-14 days after worming. ✔ After a positive EquiSal saliva test for tapeworm treat with a recommended drug and test again two months later.

If sufficient dose has been administered correctly for the weight of the animal and the follow-up test is showing a reduction of less than 95% efficacy to the targeted parasite(s) then some resistant worms are present. For example a medium worm egg count between 200 and 1150 e.p.g. should reduce to <50 epg and a high worm egg count of 1200 e.p.g .should reduce to less than 100 e.p.g. on a follow-up test. There is already widespread redworm resistance to fenbendazole and pyrantel based products and, more worryingly, localised resistance to moxidectin documented in some areas of the country. Where resistance is suspected you should consult your worming advisor (a vet or SQP) for advice.

Westgate winter ‘treat and test’ targets small redworm control for horses

“There’s a lot to be gained from including a winter worm count in your programme especially when done at the right time. Happy hunting this season! Photo by louisadayphotography.co.uk

You will need some ‘brakes’ for hunting!

Words by Stephen Biddlecombe

Readers will surely have enjoyed Localrider’s recent pictures of local ‘clean boot’ hunt, the Coakham Bloodhounds, enjoying a day at the beach. Whether you enjoy Clean Boot hunting (with Bloodhounds tracking the human scent of a runner), Drag hunting (whereby a track is laid by a ‘drag’, a piece of scented material laid by a runner), or Traditional hunting, which is undertaken within the realms of Hunting Act 2004, opening meets are now imminent, and Autumn hunting is well underway.

Here are our TOP TIPS for anyone new to this past-time:

F

ew things beat commandeering our equines across the South East’s beautiful countryside amongst friends, with the occasional break for a cheeky tipple. So, if you haven’t been hunting before, perhaps 2017 is your chance to start?

What to wear

Adults going hunting that have not been awarded colours by their hunt usually wear a tweed jacket with a shirt and tie (or coloured stock) during the Autumn season, and black or navy coats as the season migrates into the main winter season. Smart, beige-coloured (not white) breeches should be paired with long, dark-coloured boots. During the main hunting season, a white or cream stock, properly tied and secured with a plain pin, is advised. An up-tostandard helmet with a three point chin strap is the safest option, while body protectors and air jackets are allowed.

Local hunts

Hunts in the South East include the Chiddingfold, Leconfield and Cowdray Hunt, the Ashford Valley Tickham Hunt, as well as the aforementioned Coakham Bloodhounds. Check out www.bailyshuntingdirectory.com for more information about these and lots of other hunts based in the South East.

Hunting with Coakham rings; the top ring is where the cheek pieces of the bridle attach to either side, and then lower rings offer a variety of rein settings, allowing the rider to use the most suitable ring, depending on how much control is required. The McHardy 2.5 Ring is a great bit for hunting - it’s a combination of a Bombers Jointed Happy Tongue, with the manufacturer’s Buster Roller mouthpiece. It’s an excellent bit when more control is required, allowing at the same time plenty of space for the tongue. 2½ Ring McHardy

SB Bits – Bitting expertise straight from the horse’s mouth

Bitting for hunting

You may need a stronger bit than you’d normally use when out hunting, as the field can be an exciting place, with downhill canters Pelham 55 Snaffle and a ‘herd mentality’. A continental gag bit or a pelham may be a good choice. For example, Bombers Equestrian Equipment’s Snaffle Pelham has a nice curved mouthpiece which distributes pressure evenly over tongue and bars; the offset centre link reduces the nutcraker action and pressure points on the tongue. It has attachments for two reins, one near the mouthpiece, and one at the end of the shank. The Bombers Happy Tongue Pelham is also a popular bit this is more suited to horses with sensitive tongues, who may shake their head when bit pressure is applied, or try to escape the bit with their tongue. You could also try a ringed Pelham 55 Happy Tongue bit - they consist of 2.5 to four

To Shoe or Not to Shoe? Words by Ian Davies DipWCF AEP, qualified, experienced and registered Farrier based in Marlborough, Wiltshire

A. Nail hole intrusions

Last month in Part 1 of ‘To shoe or not to shoe’ we discussed the importance of remaining open minded and making the best choice for our horse. We focused upon problems incurred keeping horses unshod. This month we look at examples of what can go wrong with shod horses. Basic equine hoof anatomy and physiological knowledge is just one of the fundamentals needed when making an informed decision on whether to “Shoe or Not”. One needs to remember the S + F = P idiom. Structure + Function = Performance

The structure of the hoof

The equine foot is often referred to as “the ultimate ungulate”. The horse is the only creature whose entire weight is supported by means of ‘suspension’ from within its own hoof capsule. The hoof is a sophisticated biological system that can deliver a multitude of specialised functions that are peculiar to the horse. One of these requirements is to deliver nutrients to the hoof. This is quite a challenge when one considers that it is through the blood vascular system that essential nutrients are delivered and yet the outer structures of the hoof – wall, sole, frog, etc., are avascular, which means ‘without blood’. The hoof is an intense interconnecting structure which suspends weight, processes nutrients and directs energy. Internally, the inner highly vascular lamellae exchange nutrients via microscopic capillaries to outer non vascular structures of the hoof. Any damage to this structure and exchange process has some impact on the function and therefore the performance of the horse. Essentially the intimate proximity between this complex and delicate vascular structure, coupled to reliance on a single digit, or hoof, per limb, makes the horse uniquely susceptible to external destructive factors.

The risk of shoeing

Shoeing horses does come with its own risks.

part 2

B. Caused by clip pressure

C. “Corn” is a pressure bruise through either shoes left on too long or fitted too short

The shoes are nailed into the protective horny layer, approximately 20 mm up the hoof wall, at an average re-shoeing interval of four to six weeks. Very few, if any horses are able to produce hoof wall at the rate of 20 mm every month, therefore hoofwall integrity is compromised by multiple horse-shoe nail intrusions. Each driven nail is potentially close enough to interfere with this highly vascular network.

him to do. Over the past two issues we have considered hoof degradation in both shod and unshod environments. The recommended hoof care treatments in the cases discussed combine advantageous elements for both shoeing and not shoeing:

Recent Cases

Let us look at some recent cases I have been asked to work with. These are extreme cases, but show what can go wrong. In image A, you can see exactly where nails have intruded on the hoof. This intrusion shows just how easily infection could enter the sensitive internal structures. All of the white line is stretched and inflamed – note the shape being formed around all nail-holes. Remarkably this horse was not lame, but showed obvious asymmetry to gait. In image B, you can easily see how the repeated pressure from a badly fitted shoe clip has caused necrosis of both the toe wall and sole – the notch at the tip of the toe (bearing) is disturbingly devoid of colour and is ‘dead’. This horse was extremely uncomfortable and showing a 9 out 10 lameness In image C, you can see there is a corn located on the outside heel of the left fore (the darker/yellowish area). The bruise is formed by the pressure of either the shoe being fitted repeatedly too short or left on too long. This horse was showing a sensitive reaction to the slightest pressure.

Making the Right Choice

The decision-making process to shoe or not is multi-faceted and can be as complicated as one wants to make it. However, the ultimate decision must be based on developing good health and function of the horse, so that he can do the job you want

1. In ‘Part One’ – the young horse with damage to the external hoof from rough ground – I recommended fitting a pair of alloy, wide webbed with rolled toe. 2. Photograph A above – I fitted standard steel concave shoes of the correct size. 3. Photograph B above – I glued on a pair of alloy heart bars to offer much needed support. 4. Photograph C above – The heels had been allowed to migrate forward, too far under the horse, compounded by the dorsal wall being ‘dumped off’. Whilst the heels of the shoe were fitted to the point of the heel, those heels were positioned too far forward, offering no support, only pressure. The correct trim brought the foot back into its weight-bearing position. Slight rolling off the toe eased break-over, further relaxing concussive pressure, giving immediate relief The well-being of hooves is the result of cooperation between horse-owner, farrier and horse. Invariably a successful collaboration is based on accumulative experience, skill and resources. The hoof is adaptable and highly responsive. It is far too simplistic to conclude that there is one definitive solution or method that comprehensively serves all purposes. Practical application and conscious appreciation of individual equine requirements will guide not only your decision “to shoe or not to shoe”, but how best to care for your horse. Ian works in the Wilshire, Berkshire, Hampshire and Oxfordshire areas, but is happy to travel. Find out more about Ian at www.farriery.co or visit his facebook page @IanDaviesandCoFarrier.

MRI

Preparing horse for MRI imaging of right fore hoof

At the Sussex Equine Hospital, we have installed a new low field MRI unit. This article aims to inform you what MRI is, how we use it and what to expect when your horse comes in for an MRI scan... MRI stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging and is sometimes just referred to as MRI. MRI was first developed for humans but has since been adapted for horses, so we can carry out standing MRI scans. An MRI, unlike X-rays, CT, or Bone Scans (Nuclear Scintigraphy) doesn’t rely on ionizing radiation to penetrate the tissues of the body. An MRI machine is essentially a large magnet; the machine is so strong it polarises hydrogen atoms within tissues of the body and interprets the signals produced in response to this magnetisation. Hydrogen atoms are naturally occurring in an animal’s body and most frequently found in water and fat.

Looking for changes

Different types of tissue; bones, muscles, tendons and ligaments are all composed of different concentrations of water and fat, and so produce different signals in response to the magnetic field. Additionally, the water and fat content of a tissue changes when the tissue is injured, thus resulting in an altered signal in response to the magnetic field. This ability to differentiate between all the different tissues within the body allows us a far more detailed view of the structures within the horse’s leg and especially within the horse’s foot. MRI is most often used to image the horse’s foot and distal limb but images can be taken as far up to and including the hock and carpus, using the standing low field system. Prior to an MRI scan your horse must have its shoes removed so no metal enters the magnetic field. When undergoing an MRI your horse must be sedated and stand still whilst the MRI machine acquires these remarkably detailed images. MRI scans take between two and four hours to complete, but it all depends on how still your horse can stand!

Three-dimensional Images

MRI provides images sliced in many different planes and is capable of producing three-dimensional images in a variety of orientations. This allows MRI to provide a superior anatomical and pathological assessment of many structures within the equine distal limb and is considered the gold standard diagnostic technique for many

Ready for images to be taken

conditions. However, MRI must always be interpreted in light of a thorough clinical examination other diagnostic techniques, such as regional anaesthesia (nerve blocks) and radiography, may be necessary. Problems with the deep digital flexor tendon, the ligaments associated with the navicular bone, the navicular bone itself and the ligaments associated with the coffin joint are the typical conditions that are identified using standing MRI. Once an accurate diagnosis has achieved, a specific treatment plan can be made and a prognosis be given. The practice has the back up of the RCVS Accredited Hospital.

orses and riders were not the only ones to be put through their paces at the Ssan-gYong Blenheim Palace International Horse Trials (13th to 17th September). Two Ssan-gYong Rextons arrived at the Palace after finishing an epic 13,000km drive which took 50 days to complete. Designed to test the vehicles in extreme conditions, the Trans Eurasia Trail started at Pyeongtaek in South Korea, via Beijing and the Silk Road, travelling through ten different countries, including Kazakhstan and Russia, before completing the journey in the beautiful grounds of Blenheim Palace. SsangYong’s CEO, Mr Johng-sik Choi,

travelled from the company’s global headquarters in South Korea to visit the horse trials and witness the vehicles’ arrival at the Palace. “Since announcing our sponsorship of Blenheim Palace International Horse Trials earlier this year, we were keen to include this prestigious event in the launch plans for our new Rexton 4X4, which is why we chose Blenheim as the final destination for our Trans Eurasia Trail. I can’t think of a more appropriate place. Over the next four days we will see horses and riders working in partnership to test themselves over one of the biggest challenges they will ever face, just as our new vehicles have been tested over the past 50 days,” he said.

The new SsangYong Rexton is being launched in the UK in October, heralding major advances in style, quality, safety and technology for the brand. It is a large, D/E-segment authentic 4x4, powered by a 2.2 litre turbo diesel engine delivering maximum power of 181PS and maximum torque of 420Nm with a 6-speed manual or 7-speed Mercedes-Benz automatic transmission. Representing a huge step forward in every area - looks and style, interior ambience, structure and safety, performance and technology, this new car stays true to SsangYong’s core brand values with extremely competitive pricing from £27,500 on the road.

The three days of Dodson & Horrell sponsored Eventer Challenge classes are a hugely successful and popular part of Oxfordshire’s biggest sporting event. Sophie, who comes from Hale in the New Forest, said: “I have owned ‘Tim’ for five years and this year has been our first full season competing at BE90. Three weeks ago we qualified for the Mitsubishi Motors Cup BE90 competition [at Badminton Horse Trials], which is very exciting. He is doing really well and everything has clicked this season and he tried his heart out for me. We were only two hundredths of a second from the optimum time! I work part time as a receptionist and am building my own beauty therapist business alongside looking after and training Tim.” Sophie Albery receiving her prizes from Dodson & Horrell Brand Manager Julie Priestley

Sam Horrell, CEO of Dodson & Horrell, said: “The SsangYong Blenheim Palace International Horse Trials is a very special event for Dodson & Horrell and one which we particularly look forward to each year. The competition today has been nail-biting.”

W

e never quite know when winter is going to arrive, but the best advice we can give is to be prepared well in advance. Wet, cold, mud and even grumpy horses wanting their tea, can all unfortunately result in more unfortunate accidents happening over the winter. The very nature of an accident means you don’t know when it might happen, but the one thing you can do is make sure you are prepared. One of the most important things to do, is make sure you know where the first aid kit is and that it has enough of the winter essentials you might need. Also replace any items that are past their use-by-date. It is also important to consider where you store your first aid kit. Some liquids and sprays may be prone to freezing, so keep them in an area where you know they will be safe. Most first aid items should be stored at room temperature, but always check the packaging. You may need to store your kit in a different place in winter if your tack room isn’t heated.

Think About Prevention

Prevention is always better than a cure. In icy weather make sure walkways are gritted and take extra care when leading horses, and always wear a riding hat and gloves, even the most well-behaved horse can slip, injuring both themselves and the person leading them. For most horses, winter will mean spending more time indoors, leading to a new set of injury risks. This may increase the occurrence of bursal injuries (e.g. capped elbow) and strains (e.g. windgalls), as horses spend more time laying down and are also less mobile, allowing fluid to accumulate. Keep your horses as mobile as possible, if turnout isn’t possible in severe weather, walking in-hand or turning out in the school are good alternatives.

Clean and check hooves daily, using a hoof brush to clean the feet thoroughly and check for any injuries

Make sure you’re ready for

winter

In this issue Robinson Animal Healthcare offer advice to help make your winter worry free. Dry legs using Veterinary Gamgee to absorb any excess mosisture.

Common Winter Ailments

Hoof abscesses, thrush, mud fever and rain scald are just a few of the most common ailments which are more prevalent during the winter months. Foot abscesses are more common in wet weather because the moisture softens horse’s feet, making it easier for foreign objects or dirt to penetrate the hoof. Wet environments and poor hygiene can both lead to bacterial growth within the frog tissues and/or clefts of the frog, resulting in thrush. Dermatophilus congolensis, the bacterium that causes mud fever and rain scald, forms spores that are capable of surviving for many months, even years. If not effectively removed, the condition can reoccur at any time. The skin and underlying tissues become inflamed, which leads to the skin swelling, stretching and weeping, the skin starts to crack, hair falls out and hard scabs form.

Animalintex Hoof Treatment

The licensed veterinary poultice from Robinson Animal Healthcare

Treatment Options

Treatment for abscesses needs to commence quickly to halt the abscess finding its own exit point, which is often the coronary band, and if this happens then it will often destroy sensitive foot structures along the way. A vet or farrier will need to locate the abscess and drain the pus. Once the pus has been drained the foot must be cleaned, before applying a dressing, such as Animalintex Hoof Treatment and securing in place with a bandage, such as Equiwrap, to draw out any remaining pus. By checking and cleaning your horse’s feet on a daily basis you will hopefully minimise the risk of foot problems occurring. If your horse has a skin condition, such as mud fever and rain scald, an anti-bacterial wash can be used as a general cleansing wash. It will help to remove any encrusted debris and scabs, washing away bacteria and dirt held in the scabs. This will then allow new clean scabs to form. For best results, after cleaning and drying the legs, bandage them with a product such as Veterinary Gamgee, as this will absorb any excess moisture and provide warmth, protection and insulation. For those unexpected swellings remember to keep some Koolpaks in your first aid kit. The dry cold packs are ready for use when you need them, without having to be kept cool in the freezer. Hopefully spring will arrive without incident or accident, but just in case something happens we hope you find our tips helpful. Equisafety Hi-Viz Range Equisafety’s range now includes items that feature strips of LED lights which strobe across the product offering the driver the opportunity to access another viewpoint in his peripheral vision. These products contain white or red lights depending on where they are worn. White lights are always worn when moving towards oncoming traffic and red lights are worn at the rear to signal to drivers that there is a vehicle in front. Why red? Well first we associate it with a warning and secondly red has the lowest impact on your vision at night, i.e. your eyes recover their night vision faster when they’re exposed to red light. Therefore, the Hatband features white lights on the front and red on the back; the breastplate has white lights and the tailguard has red lights. www.equisafety.com

Snowflake Supreme

LR Comment: Sorbeo comes in smaller bags than some types of bedding, so are easy to handle. They bulk up a lot when the required water is added, interestingly the bedding doesn’t feel damp after the water is added and there seems to be no dust in the atmosphere.

The pellets

The made-up bed is more closely packed than some types of bedding, but provides a stable surface which is very easy to muck out as the droppings don’t mix in, and it is very absorbent so the urine doesn’t spread. It was used in a stable where the pony spreads her hay around, due to Sorbeo’s structure, it was very easy to separate off the remains of the hay to leave a tidy bed.

The bags are split open and water added

The pellet bed

Snowflake Supreme bales are made entirely from kiln dried softwood timber, this guarantees a naturally warm, soft and comfortable bed with a superb fresh odour. Rigorous quality control checks ensure consistent quality flake sizes to ensure that only the best wood-shavings find their way into a Supreme bale. Snowflake Supreme wood-shavings are highly absorbent but remain dry on top as any wet drains away from the surface which keeps your horse nice and dry. They are dust extracted, minimising dust levels in the stable.

The Snowflake Supreme bed

LR Comment: These made a lovely light fluffy bed and the bale was easy to break up. It was used in a stable where a horse with clipped legs lives and it provided a lovely luxury bed. It was straightforward to muck out and light to handle and manage. The bales were manageable to carry and seemed to fluff up more than average. After laying the bed there was absolutely no dust in the atmosphere.

Bedding Tried & Tested

November generally signals a change in the weather along with the way our horses are kept. Those who have spent long hours grazing through the summer and autumn months will start to spend longer in their stables. Some of us our blessed with clean horses, while others have box-walkers, or just downright messy horses. Over the last six weeks one of the team has been testing a few of the different beddings currently available. Snowflake Softchip Snowfake Softchip is a popular alternative to traditional wood-shavings. Manufactured from premium softwood to the same exacting standards as other products in the Snowflake range.

Seven bales were used to start the bed

Softchip has several advantages: Dust extracted for a healthy respiratory system, Free draining and highly absorbent. It allows wet to drain away freely to the bottom layer, ensuring that the surface of the bed remains dry. It doesn’t cling to manes, tails or rugs. As used for over eight years by Ben Maher. LR Comment:

Snowflake Softchip bed

The bale was easy to empty and formed a denser, comfortable bed. It was very easy to muck out as the droppings remain sitting on the top and it is very absorbent. The bed was easy to keep tidy and clean. After the horse had been lying down the Softchip didn’t become tangled into the tail, as it can with some bedding. It has a pleasing alpine smell which is a bonus!

Feed news

Maintaining Condition Through The Winter d

uring the winter months, when there is little or no nutritional value left in the grass, it is important to provide alternative sources of fibre (e.g. hay or haylage). Whether stabled or living out, most horses should be offered forage ad-lib.

The Importance of Fibre

The fibre in forage is continually fermented by the microflora in the hindgut, supplying energy. This process of fermentation also produces heat which will help to keep your horse warm when environmental temperatures are low. Horses that struggle to maintain condition should also be kept well-rugged, as this will reduce the amount of hard feed needed to maintain weight. With hay or haylage supplying the majority of your horse’s forage in winter, it is usually sensible to buy good quality hay or haylage as more nutritious forage will mean reduced hard feed requirements. It is also important that his teeth are functioning well so he can gain maximum benefit from his forage. Therefore, regular dental checks by a qualified equine dental technician or vet should be carried out to help keep him in good condition.

Older Horses

older horses especially, can find winter a more difficult time and this is often due to dental problems. even mild changes in the state of their teeth can mean that long fibre (e.g. hay/haylage) cannot be chewed effectively. In this case the hindgut microflora is deprived of essential fibre which can lead to digestive disturbances, with weight loss and loose droppings seen as a result. A soft, short chopped grass can be used as a hay replacer for a period of time. However, offering fibre in a pre-ground form e.g. with nutritious but highfibre cubes, rapidly becomes essential.

included improves fibre digestibility. When using one of these feed balancers the amount of nutrients that can be utilised from hay/ haylage will be increased, reducing or eliminating the requirement for additional hard feed. many horses in light work can maintain excellent condition on good quality forage and an appropriate top specification feed balancer. When further condition is needed, blends, straights and oil can be added.

Managing Exciteability

If your horse has a tendency towards over-excitable behaviour during the winter, when time spent stabled can increase whilst exercise and turnout may decrease, it is best to keep the diet low in sugar and starch. For these ‘fizzy’ horses it is a good idea to consider the quality of forage offered. The use of late-cut meadow hay is advisable, rather than richer forage sources e.g. ryegrass haylage. A top specification feed balancer, which is ‘Non-Heating,’ will provide an ideal basis for your horse’s hard feeds, whilst low-starch, cereal-grain-free conditioning cubes can be added to provide further protein and calories, if needed. oil can also be a useful addition as it is the most fattening ingredient you can feed your horse. If your horse is anxious and loses weight as a result of this behaviour, a calmer may also be beneficial. Those horses experiencing high levels of exercise over the winter, hunters for example, will also benefit from the reduced hard feed requirements that come with feeding a top specification, conditioning feed balancer. The addition of either a low starch cube or an exceptionally nutrient-dense, high calorie flaked blend will aid the retention of excellent condition to the end of the season.

Vitamins & Minerals

Although forage is the foundation of a horse’s diet during the winter, it is important to balance this diet and ensure an optimum supply of the essential amino acids, vitamins, trace-elements and minerals that will be lacking in a forage-only diet. A top specification feed balancer is the perfect solution. The high quality protein included in a top specification, conditioning feed balancer will promote muscle development and topline when horses exercise in the correct outline, whilst the yeast

Winter Feeding

Feed news

d

In this issue we look at a range of feeds and supplements to keep your horse fit and healthy this winter. Remember all the big brands have telephone helplines and if you are worried about your horse’s diet this winter, we recommend giving them a call. Baileys talk Winter Weight Loss

NAF Five Star Optimum Feed Balancer

NAF Five Star Optimum will help restore and maintain five star condition and health, maximise the nutritional value of the daily feed ration, and optimise the health and efficiency of the digestive system. Concentrated and easy to feed, Optimum comes in a highly palatable pellet form. It is of the highest supplement specification and has a great sugar free flavour. Optimum is formulated to complement either a high fibre low concentrate, or performance diet. When a daily feed is not necessary, the great news is that Optimum can be simply given on its own, directly from your hand. It is designed to optimise every horse’s diet from family pony to performance athlete. For further details please call the NAF Freephone Nutritional Advice line 0800 373106 or visit www.naf-equine.eu/uk

Launched last year, Dodson & Horrell is proud to announce the return of their popular Winter Health Mash. This incredibly aromatic, warming hug in a bucket, is specifically designed to support the horse’s immune and digestive function over the winter months. It stimulates appetite with added carrots, peas and herbs to appeal to fussy eaters. Due to its warm appetite enhancing fragrance it can also be used as an ideal way to disguise supplements and medicines. As horses and ponies start to lose condition at this time of year, Dodson & Horrell Winter Health Mash is an ideal addition to provide more than just added calories. Mash isn’t new to the market, but what makes this unique, is its thoughtfully crafted nutritional formula. Loaded with essential herbs such as echinacea for immune support; bran, fennel and mint to encourage appetite and help maintain a healthy digestive function and if that wasn’t enough, it’s also oat and molasses free with 7.5% oil content for coat condition. The Winter Health Mash is not a complete feed but intended as an addition to an existing diet or as an occasional treat when the cold calls for some warming nutritious comfort. Before feeding simply soak the Winter Health Mash with warm water. It’s ready to warm your equine buddy from the inside in just 10 minutes. It serves as an additional source of hydration and with its aromatic warming festive fragrance, it will give you a warm satisfying smile too.

de

If your horse or pony is heading into winter a tad on the plump side, use the drop in temperature to encourage some weight loss ready for next spring. Avoiding over-rugging, so your good-doer has to burn some of his own body fat to keep warm, is simple and costfree yet can have highly beneficial results. For some, you may also need to control forage intake, to count the calories, while soaking forage for several hours will also help to “wash out” potentially fattening water soluble carbohydrates. It’s still important to provide a balanced diet and Baileys Lo-Cal balancer is the ideal way to provide essential nutrients, without the calories associated with a mix or cube, and is simple to feed, by the mug-full alongside forage, to ensure the horse or pony is getting what they need. Lo-Cal balancer contains quality protein to provide the building blocks for muscle, skin and hoof and help maintain top line (not fat) and tissue integrity. The spectrum of vitamins and minerals includes all those necessary for health and well-being, at levels and in proportions as carefully formulated as those in any broad spectrum or hoof supplement. Chelated Bioplex® minerals are also included as these are more easily absorbed and utilised by the body. Baileys Lo-Cal balancer should be fed at recommended levels and can be mixed with as much or as little Baileys Light Chaff as you like. Light Chaff is a delicious blend of chopped alfalfa and oat straw with a dusting of mint and a dash of soya oil. For those who like to feed beet pulp but are wary of its calorie content for good-doers or laminitics, soaked Speedi-Beet is also ideal fed with Baileys Lo-Cal balancer. One balancer mug of Speedi-Beet soaked with four mugs of water produces a Stubbs scoop-full for a horse to chew on but still provides fewer calories even than a scoop of Light Chaff.

Dodson & Horrell Winter Health Mash

Rowen Barbary ReadyMash Extra Rowen Barbary ReadyMash Extra is a palatable mash containing high levels of essential oils and milk powders for horses that need a higher calorie diet for conditioning and controlled weight gain, whilst providing an excellent source of slow release energy from the structured fibre. The high fibre level will help to encourage slow rates of digestion throughout the hind gut making the ReadyMash Extra particularly valuable for horses requiring a diet that is sympathetic on the digestive system. Fully balanced in essential nutrients, ReadyMash Extra is an ideal feed to use this winter to ensure your horse is kept warm, healthy and in good condition. HorseHage

f

e

Choosing the type of forage to feed your horse or pony should be the most important feed decision you make, as up to 100% of the equine diet should be provided by forage. HorseHage has over 40 years of expertise in producing the highly compressed, dust-free product that has become widely recognised as a premium quality product. HorseHage is not re-wrapped, it is compressed down to half its size and packed into heat-sealed, double-skinned bags. It goes through a fermentation process that causes the sugars in the grass to break down, reducing the acidity level and giving it a sweet smell whilst preserving the grass. This gives it a much lower sugar content (around 4%) than most other forages. There is nothing added to HorseHage, no chemicals, mould inhibitors or inoculants. It’s a totally natural product and has beTA NoPS and FemAS certifications. So, if you’re looking for a forage that is dust-free, low in sugar, easy to use, totally natural and comes with a guarantee, HorseHage is ideal. It is available in four different varieties offering a choice of energy levels for every type of horse or pony including those prone to laminitis. For more information please call the HorseHage Helpline on 01803 527274 or visit www.horsehage.co.uk

TopSpec 10:10 Joint Support contains an excellent specification of nutrients to help the development and maintenance of healthy joints. Synovial joints are stabilised by a complex network of tendons, ligaments and muscles in and around the joint, and by the joint capsule itself. In ideal circumstances this enables joints to function smoothly and comfortably. It contains a generous combination of Glucosamine (10g/500Kg horse/day) and mSm (10g/500Kg horse/day). It also contains an antioxidant blend of vitamins C, e, beta-carotene and natural tocopherols. TopSpec 10:10 Joint Support is designed to help support joints. It is particularly suitable for horses working hard and elderly horses. TopSpec 10:10 Joint Support can be fed at a maintenance rate (half the recommended) to support healthy joints. For further information please contact the Multiple Award-Winning Helpline on 01845 565030 or visit www.topspec.com

NAF Five Star Superflex

NAF In the Pink Senior

For all old Age Performers, In the Pink Senior is specially formulated to meet all the nutritional requirements of the older horse and is designed to give him all the support he needs to stay active and feeling forever young. In the Pink Senior helps balance the diet and the digestive system, which enables the horse to maximise the value of his feed intake. It provides pre and probiotics for optimum support of the gut, and supplies all the vitamins and minerals required by the older horse for all round health. In the Pink Senior also supplies a unique combination of naturally sourced antioxidant ingredients to flush excess free radicals from the system, as well as providing nutrients to support joint health. Specially chosen herbs support a youthful spark. In the Pink Senior is recommended for all older horses and ponies, whether signs of age are obvious or not.

f e

NAF Five Star Superflex is the right combination; a scientifically balanced ratio of readily absorbed Glucosamine and Chondroitin, the highest quality mSm plus the added benefits of a powerful antioxidant formula, exclusively designed to address excess free radical build up around the joint. Horses’ joints have to cope with extreme forces and it is commonly the cartilage that is the first part to show wear and

tear. The key cartilage nutrients, Glucosamine Sulphate, mSm, Chondroitin Sulphate and Hyaluronic acid (HA) are well known for their support for the health of both cartilage, and the thick synovial fluid that oils the joint. research recommends that feeding a combination of the key nutrients allows them to work together more effectively than any one nutrient alone. Getting the combination right is crucial. Five Star Superflex contains the right combination of key nutrients in the optimum ratios, developed over 25 years of working with sound horses. Naturally sourced antioxidants are also included to work synergistically with Glucosamine and mSm to support joint health. www.naf-equine.eu/uk
